power trip on abc

What’s Happening:

  • With the midterm elections just under two months away, ABC News Studios, George Stephanopoulos Productions (GSP) and Noble Beast have launched a new weekly political docu-series that brings viewers inside the top stories of the election campaign from an unparalleled, ground-level perspective on the candidates and their staff.
  • Power Trip – Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them , the first weekly streaming docu-series produced from ABC News Studios, provides unmatched behind-the-scenes analysis powered by the ABC News political team led by George Stephanopoulos, anchor of This Week  and co-anchor of Good Morning America, and a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of seven embedded young reporters as they cover races across the country, recording, reporting and holding candidates of both parties accountable. Power Trip – Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them  begins streaming Sunday, Sept. 25, only on Hulu.
  • Stephanopoulos will serve as a key advisor and mentor to the group of young, ambitious reporters as they master the challenge of campaign reporting while often struggling personally with the grueling task at hand.
  • With a visceral approach that has one foot on the trail following young reporters embedded with the campaigns and another foot back in the newsrooms where each key development is analyzed and dissected, Power Trip  will capture real-world moments and slices of candidate life that viewers don’t normally see and pull back the curtain on a premier news operation, revealing how that news is made.
  • The docu-series will give viewers a first-hand experience of each week’s most important campaign stories as they unfold and show why they matter.
  • The embedded reporter program has played an important role in ABC News’ election coverage for more than three decades.
  • This year’s class marks the first time the network has deployed embedded reporters for the midterm elections, giving viewers an inside, real-time look at the political landscape across the country.

What They’re Saying:

  • “The 2022 midterms will offer a lot of surprises and set the stage for the 2024 presidential race. This series showcases the next generation of our political reporting talent as they cover a historic election cycle,” said Stephanopoulos. “I’m proud to help tell this story and guide the ABC News team as we give an intimate look at how today’s cultural and partisan fractures are playing in races across the country.”

Power Trip: Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them

Months of hard work have all come down to this: election day. As ABC’s embed reporters are put to the ultimate test covering the tightest races across the country, nerves and excitement are met with the realization that their journeys are ending.

George Stephanopoulos has been many things over the years. A political operative. A TV anchor. In his next project, he’s taking on a decidedly different role.

Playstation state of play underscores muted release year ahead of summer game fest, 'the watchers' review: ishana night shyamalan directs a glossy woodland horror thriller. the twist the film is more promising than good, popular on variety.

All the nation’s big TV-news outlets have built new massive streaming-video hubs, the better to capture attention from younger viewers more inclined to seek out the latest headlines from social media or on-demand video. What they haven’t done quite yet is develop programming tailored for that audience. While there are some exceptions, the bulk of streaming news shows launched so far rely on the usual presentation of an anchor sitting behind a desk.

“Journalists recognized they can tell their stories more directly and more genuinely without having the intermediary of a conventional newscast,” says Tim Hanlon, who advises media and advertising companies as CEO of Vertere Group. “The question is how does it all get paid for? Models are in process.”

“Power Trip” has few of the trappings of the evening news or Sunday public-affairs program. The seven embeds will fan out across the nation, potentially covering closely-watched Senate races in Pennsylvania or Georgia; examining voter trends in Texas or hot issues in California. As they set about to find stories and headlines for ABC, they will check in with Stephanopoulos, who will have to be poised to advise at a moment’s notice, depending on how stories develop.

ABC News and other networks have for decades relied on young embeds to serve as their eyes and ears across the country as various candidates campaign for higher office. ABC typically doesn’t send out embeds for midterms, says Stephanopoulos, but the issues Americans are voting on are so important and the polling margins for a Democratic or Republican victory are so thin that executives felt the effort would be warranted. “We always remembered in these campaigns hearing great stories from our embeds,” the anchor says.

Many of the biggest backers of TV news are turning to streaming to court viewers who may no longer watch broadcast or cable TV as often as news aficionados did in the past. They have good reason.  Approximately 84% of U.S. adults said they often or sometimes get news from a smartphone, computer, or tablet, according to a 2021 study by Pew Research Center, including 51% who say they do so often. The portion that gets news from digital devices continues to outpace those who get news from television, Pew found.

There have been some early efforts to shake up how news works in the streaming era. ABC News venerable “20/20,” for example, has retooled itself as a two-hour true-crime mystery for Hulu, as executives found subscribers were eager to watch that sort of storytelling. One early effort at the now-scuttled CNN+ featured anchor Kate Bolduan giving subscribers a quick rundown of “5 Things” they needed to know before their day kicked into high gear. The show typically lasted 20 minutes or less. Fox Nation has tapped various personnel at Fox News Channel to talk about hobbies and passions, like cooking or taking part in a book club.

Still, many of the broadband-news efforts, which include services such as NBC News Now and ABC News Live, rely heavily on anchor-desk formats and documentary-style programming . There’s a growing sense streaming viewers are eager to see something else.

Giving viewers a look behind the scenes could prove important, says Chris Wells, an associate professor of emerging media studies at Boston University. In an era when politicians have cast aspersions on newsgathering and the fragmentation of media has led to news outlets that cater to partisan interests, he says, some consumers crave a deeper view on how journalists work. “A lot of citizens don’t really understand what journalists are doing,” he says, and they want to see “not only the final story, but a little bit of the process behind it.”

ABC News has a decided interest in figuring it out. The Disney-backed unit recently launched a studio aimed at devising concepts for Hulu, Disney+ and other parts of its parent company’s media portfolio, which is tilting more heavily toward streaming (and is involved in the production of “Power Trip”). Stephanopoulos, who launched his own production company in October of last year , is expected to create projects suited for all parts of the Disney empire. Recent work has included an interview with former M16 spy Christopher Steele and a behind-the-scenes examination of the takedown of a terrorist threat that could have rivaled the Oklahoma City bombing.

George Stephanopoulos Productions has enlisted a group of savvy producers to help launch “Power Trip.” Ted Bourne, who has worked on the Showtime political documentary series “The Circus” and A&E’s documentary series “The First 48,” serves as an executive producer, along with Heather Riley, a longtime Stephanopoulos associate who earlier this year was named executive editorial producer of political programming and affairs at ABC News. Jonathan Greenberger, ABC News vice president and Washington bureau chief, will work as an executive contributor to the program, and his team manages the embedded reporters.

Among the group of young journalists are Libby Cathey, a reporter for ABCNews.com who covers the White House, Capitol Hill and breaking political news who has experience working for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and Snapchat. Abby Cruz is a producer/reporter for ABC News’ race and culture unit who fluent in Spanish and has worked for Washington City Paper. Paulina Tam is a segment producer for “Nightline” who once embedded with the Newark Police Department.

One week’s episode could center on what’s happening in a particular state, says Stephanopoulos, or on one reporter’s efforts to make headway with a source or story. But the team will also keep an eye on issues like how President Biden or former President Trump influence campaigns; the effects of the recent Supreme Court decision on abortion have on voters; and voting security.

The hope, says Stephanopoulos, is that “Power Trip” is worth taking more than once. If the initial series works well, the anchor says, he hopes ABC News will use it for the presidential elections in 2024.

What is it like for young reporters to cover an election campaign? ABC News, in conjunction with George Stephanopoulos , is trying to answer that with its new docuseries Power Trip—Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them.

The new weekly docuseries will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of seven embedded young reporters working for ABC News, as they cover races across the country for the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.

The docuseries will follow this group of embeds as they record, report and endeavor to hold candidates of both parties accountable.

The seven embeds include Abigail Cruz (covering Texas and Nevada), Libby Cathey (Arizona and California), Hannah Demissie (North Carolina and Missouri), Lalee Ibssa (Georgia), Miles Cohen (Florida), Paulina Tam and Will McDuffie (Pennsylvania).

Stephanopoulos, who is the anchor of This Week and co-anchor of GMA, will serve as a key advisor and mentor to the embeds.

“The 2022 midterms will offer a lot of surprises and set the stage for the 2024 presidential race. This series showcases the next generation of our political reporting talent, as they cover a historic election cycle,” said Stephanopoulos. “I’m proud to help tell this story—and guide the ABC News team, as we give an intimate look at how today’s cultural and partisan fractures are playing in races across the country.”

Power Trip follows seven promising young reporters, mentored by George Stephanopoulos, as they help ABC News cover midterm campaigns across the United States

ABC News' experimental new documentary series combines the most lovable elements of reality television with real-life political journalism, highlighting the division in America right now with on-the-ground reporting.

Power Trip — Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them is ABC News Studios' first weekly docuseries made for streaming, and it's sure to bring a unique perspective on the midterms. Along the way, viewers will see behind-the-scenes footage of the toll an election cycle takes on reporters — and get an understanding of why they choose to do the work anyway.

"The 2022 midterms will offer a lot of surprises and set the stage for the 2024 presidential race. This series showcases the next generation of our political reporting talent as they cover a historic election cycle," Stephanopoulos said in a release.

He continued: "I'm proud to help tell this story and guide the ABC News team as we give an intimate look at how today's cultural and partisan fractures are playing in races across the country."

The world according to Abby Cruz

Philadelphia native and Latina journalist Abby Cruz is featured on the Hulu docuseries, Power Trip, a behind-the-scenes look at political campaigns. A new episode drops on Sunday.

ABC News reporter and Philly native Abby Cruz on the job with new docuseries "Power Trip."

Key 1: Tough times don’t last; tough people do

ABC’s Race & Culture reporter Abby Cruz didn’t have an easy childhood growing up in North Philadelphia, so she developed what she now calls keys for turning lemons into lemonade.

Those keys also unlocked her latest career coup: participating in the George Stephanopoulos produced eight-part docuseries Power Trip: Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them airing Sundays on Hulu, where ABC News goes behind its own scenes to show the effort it takes for seven of its newest reporters to cover this year’s midterm elections.

ABC News has long used embeds, campaign reporters who become embedded in a campaign, to help cover presidential elections, but this is the first time they have been used for a midterm election. Power Trip follows the embeds as they do the grunt work to get the stories.

“We are boots on the ground and give behind the scenes access,” Cruz explained.

Raised in North Philadelphia, Cruz said “I like to tell people that Kensington made me, and Logan raised me.” Both neighborhoods were gritty and dangerous, but Cruz insisted that’s what made her tough.

And toughness, as she told her audience during her 2020 TED Talk — ”Seizing Your Opportunity” — is one of her keys to making it.

Key 2: Trust in your struggle

Yet nothing in Abby Cruz’s life suggested she would make it.

“My name is Abby Cruz. I’m with ABC News in Washington, D.C. I’m also a committee member with the National Press Club,” she explained during the TED Talk. “But forget about all that for one second because this, right here, is a dream come true.”

Her reality was more nightmarish.

Cruz’s mother took her away from her grandmother, who had raised her in Logan until she was 8 years old, in an attempt at a second chance at mothering but became physically abusive. Her father was completely absent.

In her mother’s Kensington rowhouse, Cruz remembered, “That’s when hell started again. Every time my mom would see me, she puts her hands on me. Every time she was angry, I’m getting it. She just did not like seeing my face.”

Eventually, her mother evicted her from the house, and she went to live with her best friend. At 15, she left and didn’t look back.

School, however, was another world. She attended Conwell Middle Magnet School and then was steered by an instructor to the academically challenging Philadelphia High School for Girls. Finishing La Salle University made her the first college graduate in her family.

But pity is not what Cruz wants people to draw from her talk about her childhood experiences. She wants people to know that the second key to success is to embrace your own fight. Cruz believes you have to have a I’m-ready-to die-for-this-opportunity attitude to seize the day.

And she wants you to know when you seize the day, nightmares fade, and dreams come true.

Key 3: Light at the end of the tunnel

Cruz knew she wanted out of North Philadelphia, and she knew she wanted to be a reporter. She just didn’t know how to make either of those happen. “I was always so hungry and determined. I wanted to make it out so bad,” she said.

During her freshman year in college, Cruz received a call from the Department of Human Services that resulted in her becoming the legal guardian for her two younger sisters, ages 13 and 6. So her life became parenthood along with a full-time job and a full-time school load.

Cruz credits her favorite uncle, Alberto Torres or De$oney (pronounced De-money), with igniting her love of newspapers as they read The Inquirer want ads together to help him search for jobs. She credits the Daily News for her first internship and allowing her to search the streets for stories. On Feb, 17, 2015, Cruz’s first article was published — on a man who sold his popular carrot cakes in the subway after misfortune struck and he had to shutter his brick-and-mortar store.

It showed what is becoming a Cruz specialty — authentic stories about real and resilient people in tough situations.

The story was a newsroom hit and it started her upward reporter’s climb. Eventually, her newspaper mentors urged her to leave the city.

She told her TED Talk audience that sometimes seizing the opportunity means listening to people giving you genuine advice. She opted to go to D.C. but had no job and no place to live. However, her 2018 freelance coverage of the March for Our Lives student-led protest in wake of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., brought her work to the attention of Reuters, BBC, and ABC News.

And when ABC News offered to pay her for some photos, she countered with a request for employment. In 2019, she became a desk assistant.

“A desk assistant, it’s an entry level job but I was thankful for my opportunity. I started to pitch my own stories. It doesn’t matter about the title. It matters the role you are going to play,” Cruz said.

Cruz, who now lives in D.C., called from her temporary home in the Dallas-Fort Worth area because ABC News assigned her Texas and Nevada. Uncharacteristically, Cruz doubted her readiness for the docuseries and thought being an embed would be too difficult for a reporter with no political experience.

When she asked Stephanopoulos for help, he told her that every story eventually intersects with politics. “Thank God for him giving me that advice because once he gave me that information, I was fearless. He made it so simple. And the cherry on top — if I ever have an issue, he is one phone call away.”

Grey's Anatomy's Biggest Villain Has Been Hiding In Plain Sight Since Season 8

  • Catherine Fox has been manipulating characters since season 8, potentially leading to her downfall in season 21.
  • Grey Sloan Memorial has lost doctors due to Catherine's power trip, affecting key characters like Meredith.
  • The end of Grey's Anatomy season 20 could set up the end of Catherine's power, setting up potential changes for the series.

A character who is arguably Grey's Anatomy 's biggest villain has been lurking in plain sight as far back as season 8. Grey's Anatomy has had countless polarizing characters throughout its 19-year existence. Given the long-running drama's focus on the world of medicine, things are about to change, since many characters are leaving Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital due to the actions of one individual at the end of Grey's Anatomy season 20 . The series has been switching things up in preparation for Grey's Anatomy season 21 , but there's a good chance that the characters' current adversary has more scores to settle before the dust does.

It's always interesting when a long-running series takes things in a different direction, and Grey's Anatomy needs a shake-up because it's been on the air for so long . The big question is whether a villain with a lot of history with the most beloved characters is the best way forward. It will all come down to where things go next.

8 Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Story Predictions Based On The Season 20 Finale

The fiery finale of Grey's Anatomy season 20 resulted in several cliffhanger endings for some of the long-running show's most beloved characters.

Catherine Fox Has Been Manipulating Grey's Anatomy Characters For Years

Catherine has been around since grey's anatomy season 8.

Catherine Fox has been with the show since 2011 and has been immersed in some of its biggest storylines. Unfortunately for the other characters, she's long been pulling strings from behind the scenes in an effort to have control over everything that happens in the hospital. Her overbearing nature has caused her to have countless arguments with her son, Jackson, for instance; her treatment of Richard has bordered on abusive; she was complicit in covering up abuse; and she bought an entire hospital out of spite to ruin the supposed love of her life.

In recent stories, it feels like Catherine is on a never-ending power trip: she is, after all, the acceptable face of corporate capitalism in the most perverse place - an environment of care. That being said, her position at the hospital means she has to have input on what's happening and Catherine has been forced to make difficult decisions for the sake of lots of Grey 's characters, whether they like it or not.

9 Station 19 Characters Who Can Still Return In Grey's Anatomy

Although Station 19 season 7 marked the series finale of the spinoff, several characters can still appear on the show's parent series, Grey's Anatomy.

Equally, that shouldn't mean she should speak down to people who don't follow her orders. The show has done a great job of fleshing out such an important character, but at the same time, it has also turned her into one of the biggest villains in Grey's Anatomy history. Given her connections to many characters, such as her husband, Richard, it's hard to believe she's skated by for so long , but as a mark of Debbie Allen's excellent performance, she has retained some level of sympathy.

That will likely change thanks to her clash with Meredith and several other doctors who felt her wrath at the end of Grey's Anatomy season 20. This feels like a breaking point, and it's something that has been simmering for a long time.

Meredith Is Well Aware of Catherine's Mean Streak After Grey's Anatomy Season 20

Grey sloan memorial has lost countless doctors due to catherine's power trip.

Catherine went on the warpath in Grey's Anatomy season 20, episode 10 by telling Meredith that her Alzheimer's research belonged to the Catherine Fox Foundation. Technically, thanks to Teddy's approval of Meredith's research, she's not wrong - the foundation's money funded it. Meredith's foray into research for the disease was a monumental storyline , and Catherine understood how close this was to her heart.

Previously, Catherine had told Meredith to stop her research, drawing her battle lines and making it clear to the audience that she was the villain. This was, after all, Meredith's opportunity to not only change the world but to emerge from her mother's shadow. Catherine's switch in the finale to recognizing the value in the research, but insisting on ownership was a step further. Forcing Meredith to hand it over to Koracick has got to be one of Catherine's most wicked decisions.

She may have been wrong to defy the orders of her boss, but Meredith invested a lot of time in a cause dear to her. Still, Catherine seemed more concerned about teaching Meredith, Teddy, Amelia, Owen, and everyone else a lesson . The series has established Catherine as an adversary whose latest decisions will heavily impact Grey's Anatomy season 21, threatening to take away everything great about the hospital and adding to the list of doctors Grey's Anatomy has lost .

What Catherine Fox Really Represents In Grey's Anatomy

Inhuman corporate influence has been a grey's anatomy message for a while.

While season 20 somewhat dropped the ball on the intern's welfare storyline by sidelining Helm, there has long been a message of the human commitment to medical care clashing with the reality of hospital business. Introducing the new batch of interns in season 19 after the program had been shuttered has been used an opportunity to explore that more overtly. And every politicized message like that needs a villain.

Not so long ago, we saw Catherine personally treating hospital benefactors like VIPs, prioritizing a bespoke special treatment package for their child over more practical considerations. Ultimately, in that case, Catherine's pressure pays off, but her threat to cut off Link and Monica's salaries if they didn't do as they were told was a particularly cold move.

Catherine has always been a formidable figure , willing to go the extra mile to ensure her business thrives - as well as her more personal aims - and her position is an uncomfortable one. She cannot be unaware that the hospital succeeds because of the exploitation of its staff (with the interns' treatment repeatedly highlighted), but there is a gleeful ignorance to her approach to leadership that makes her feel like a pantomime or soap opera villain. She is the constant reminder of the power of dollar signs over people, and season 20's ending further emphasizes that.

Grey's Anatomy Season 20's Ending Sets Up The End Of Catherine's Power

The villain who usually gets her own way didn't win this time.

The likely scenario is that this storyline will set up Debbie Allen's permanent departure from Grey's Anatomy , as the bridges the character is burning could very well lead to Catherine ultimately being forced out. It's not just that she's led to the seemingly very real departure of the show's main character - there's more in the finale that suggests her position could be untenable . And it's all about control.

Catherine has always been able to control whoever she needs to, in order to get her own way. In the season 20 finale, however, even her most radical decisions lead to very little. She fires Teddy and Owen, only for them to prioritize patient care and return to work; she attempts to take Meredith's research, only to see her quit in defiance and keep it from her; and as she goads the interns as "replaceable", she's met with Bailey's insubordination. Catherine wouldn't have planned any of those outcomes, and none of them fit her usual successes.

Whether Catherine can recover from that many characters - all popular figures - fighting back is a major question for Grey's Anatomy season 21 to answer early. But it doesn't feel like her position would be as powerful if she allows them to win. Perhaps it's time for her to hand over the reins to someone with a less nefarious corporate drive, who can deliver on the show's message that people matter more than profits.

After long delays, Boeing's Starliner capsule and crew launch into space

Brendan Byrne

**IF IT DOES** BOEING STARLINER LAUNCHES

Boeing's Starliner capsule lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. on Wednesday. It's the first time the capsule, powered by an Atlas V rocket made by United Launch Alliance, has flown people. Two NASA astronauts are on board for a day-long trip to the International Space Station. This test flight is years behind scheduled and billions of dollars over budget.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The third time was the charm.

Boeing’s long-delayed Starliner space capsule lifted off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station carrying two NASA astronauts and reached orbit about twelve minutes later. The crew will spend the next 25 hours racing to catch up to the International Space Station.

The mission marks the first time the commercially-built capsule is carrying humans, with a scheduled docking to the station Thursday around 12:15 p.m. ET, with astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore as commander and Sunita “Suni” Williams serving as mission pilot.

It was the third launch attempt of Starliner. On Saturday, the countdown was halted with less than four minutes left. An issue with the flight computers that control launch was to blame. Launch provider ULA replaced a power supply on the system and cleared it for Wednesday’s launch. It followed a launch attempt last month that was called off due to a misbehaving valve on the Atlas V rocket’s upper stage Centaur.

While fixing that issue, Boeing discovered another: a helium leak. The gas is used in Starliner’s propulsion system. After a review of the data, NASA was confident Boeing could successfully fly the mission.

With all those issues resolved, and Starliner on its way to the space station, it appears this third try is indeed the charm. Now launched, Wilmore and Williams are taking Starliner on its maiden flight, putting the vehicle through its paces ahead of operational missions for NASA. After the Space Shuttle retired in 2011, NASA partnered with two commercial companies -- Boeing and SpaceX -- to ferry astronauts to and from the space station.

But Boeing has lagged behind its commercial space transportation counterpart SpaceX, which has flown nine missions for NASA already and another four private flights. An uncrewed Starliner mission in 2019 failed to reach the station, in part due to faulty flight computer code. A re-flight of the launch in 2022 was considered a success by NASA and Boeing, but issues were later discovered in the capsule’s parachute systems.

An analysis also found tape used to manage the hundreds of feet of cabling within the spacecraft was flammable. Boeing fixed those issues and received NASA’s go-ahead to launch the crew

But that first attempt to launch this crewed mission last month was scrubbed due to an issue with the rocket responsible for giving Starliner its big boost into space.

Willmore and Williams will test key systems of Starliner as it docks with the space station, including life support and communication. While the spacecraft can essentially fly itself, the duo will test out manual controls of the vehicle as it approaches the orbiting outpost.

The crew will spend about a week aboard the station with a scheduled landing under a canopy of parachutes in the southwest U.S. Teams at NASA and Boeing will comb through the data from this flight before certifying the vehicle for operational mission. NASA plans to split astronaut flights between Boeing and SpaceX, with trips to the I.S.S. happening about every six months.

POWER TRIP's first full set with new vocalist: see setlist and videos

Texas thrashers Power Trip swung their axes again last night (June 6th) in Pomona, California, marking their first full performance with new vocalist Seth Gilmore ( Fugitive , Skourge).

The set at the Glasshouse marked the first of a stretch of shows Power Trip are playing this year, including an additional appearance in L.A. as part of this weekend's inaugural No Values punk fest. While the band did in fact play a five-song "secret" set at Austin, Texas' Mohawk venue last December — marking the group's first public performance since the death of founding vocalist Riley Gale in 2020 — last night's SoCal show stop found PT suffering no fools for a full, 13-song smash-about.

The band naturally drilled into their legendary "Executioner's Tax (Swing of the Axe)," but also whipped through faster thrashers like "Hornet's Nest," "Nightmare Logic" and "Firing Squad." Power Trip closed the night by pile-driving out an encore of Manifest Decimation 's "The Hammer of Doubt."

The night also featured opening sets from Spy and SpiritWorld, who were also both on-hand to film parts of Power Trip's set. You'll find live clips, the full setlist (via Setlist.fm ), and Power Trip's remaining tour dates down below.

Power Trip's plans beyond these shows is as yet unclear, but guitarist Blake Ibanez (who also performs alongside Gilmore in Fugitive) mentioned that PT had banked "a record's worth of music" a couple of years ago.

7 tornadoes touch down in Mid-Atlantic, fallen tree kills 2-year-old in Michigan

ABCNews logo

Seven tornadoes touched down in Maryland and northern Virginia Wednesday night with winds up to 105 mph knocking downing trees and power lines, the National Weather Service said

Five people were injured in the Mid-Atlantic, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado warning was issued late Wednesday in Montgomery County, Maryland, after a confirmed tornado was located near Poolesville, Maryland, about 20 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.

"This is a particularly dangerous situation," the National Weather Service said while urging people to take cover.

Mid-Atlantic states are not strangers to tornadoes; they happen each year and June is one of the busiest tornado months. Most are weak, rated EF1 or EF0.

Meanwhile, in Michigan, a tornado tore through Livonia on Wednesday, knocking a tree onto a house and killing a 2-year-old boy, according to Livonia Fire and Rescue.

"The City of Livonia extends its heartfelt sympathies to the family," the fire department said.

The afternoon tornado was rated an EF1 with winds of 95 mph.

On Thursday, the storm system that brought tornadoes to Mid-Atlantic will stay active through the Mid-Atlantic and the Interstate 95 corridor.

Tornadoes are not expected, but heavy rain and flash flooding are possible from New Jersey to North Carolina.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect from Virginia to New Jersey, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia.

The Ability Center to host free power chair soccer clinic

The deadline to register is June 14.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The Ability Center of Greater Toledo has announced it will be hosting a free power chair soccer clinic.

The clinic will take place on June 22 at the Whitmer High School Fieldhouse. The schedule for the event is as follows:

  • Morning Session: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Complimentary Lunch: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Afternoon Session: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“We are honored to collaborate with Riley Johnson and the United States Power Soccer Association for this exciting event,” said Maggie Dreier, Director of Independent Living at The Ability Center of Greater Toledo. “Our goal is to create opportunities for people of all abilities to engage in sports and build community connections.”

Organizers say participants should show up to the event 30 minutes early for check in and to allow time for fitting guards on their chairs. Players, family members and caregivers from both sessions are invited to the catered lunch in between the sessions.

Power soccer uses a power wheelchair with guard rails to give those with disabilities the chance to compete. According to organizers, all players must play using a power chair but they do not need to be a power chair user. The Ability Center will provide power chairs to those who need them.

“After being paralyzed from the shoulders down 13 years ago, the opportunities to play any sport has been limited,” said The Ability Center of Greater Toledo Board Member Jeremy Bigelow. “Power soccer gives me that opportunity to be included in some playful competition and not just be a spectator.”

The deadline to register is June 14.

D-Day's 80th anniversary commemorations begin with King Charles in the UK as world leaders head to France

King Charles holds and hand to his eye as he tears up

King Charles III has headed Britain's commemorations for D-Day's 80th anniversary, as he prepares for his first international trip since his cancer diagnosis.

The 75-year-old monarch, who only recently resumed public engagements, spoke at a remembrance event in Portsmouth, on England's south coast.

He is also expected to head to France on Thursday, local time, for further commemorations, alongside world leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US president Joe Biden.

It will be the royal's first overseas visit since his cancer diagnosis was announced in February.

Charles, who served himself in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, told the flag-waving audience to "give thanks for all those who gave so much to win the victory whose fruits we still enjoy to this day".

"Let us once again commit ourselves always to remember, cherish and honour those who served that day," he said.

The date pays tribute to the soldiers who fought to liberate France, in a major turning point of World War II.

About 4,400 Allied troops died on D-Day.

Wednesday's UK commemorations, which included readings, music and re-enactments from the period, also heard from aging veterans.

Roy Hayward — who was aged 19 at the time — lost both his legs below the knees to amputation during the war.

"I always considered myself one of the lucky ones that survived, because so many of us didn't," Mr Hayward said.

"I represent the men and women who put their lives on hold to go and fight for democracy and this country.

'It's a chance of a lifetime'

Veterans also gathered in Ouistreham, France to pay tribute.

Aged between 97 and 103, many of the veterans had walking sticks or were in wheelchairs, and wore military medals pinned to their lapels.

John Dennett, 99, told the BBC he was looking forward to the ceremonies of the coming days.

"It's a chance of a lifetime," he said.

"Eighty years ago, it's a long time, going back, to see what we started."
