Here's everything new in Safari on iOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3

Apple released macOS Monterey 12.3 and iOS 15.4 on Monday, both of which include the latest update for the Safari web browser, version 15.4. In addition to the usual changelogs for both operating systems, Apple has also published a blog post revealing all the changes in the latest WebKit engine update, which powers Safari on all platforms.

Safari 15.4 adds support for the <dialog> element and ::backdrop pseudo-element, which were also included in the recent Firefox 98 update . The features make it easier for sites to create dialog/popup boxes that fit in with the design of a page, with less custom JavaScript and HTML code. Other CSS features for web developers are now supported, including the new :has() pseudo-class, Cascade Layers, CSS Containment, new Viewport Units, and more calc() math functions. Those new additions will make web development easier, and more importantly, helps Safari catch up to Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (which in turn means fewer broken websites for people using Safari).

The Safari update has a few new Web APIs, too. BroadcastChannel is now supported, so tabs, windows, frames, and Service Workers from the same origin can all communicate to each other — a helpful feature for web applications running across multiple tabs and windows. New features are available for the File System Access API, which allows web apps to access local files and folders (with permission), and the Web Locks API has been added.

Apple isn't forcing the controversial change from Manifest V3

Apple added support for the WebExtensions API (essentially a clone of Chrome's extension API) last year, and Safari 15.4 has a few improvements to keep it aligned with changes in Chrome. Google rolled out the updated Manifest V3 API last year, with the release of Chrome 88, and Safari now supports everything in the new standard (such as Service Workers for background pages and new dynamic/session rules). However, Apple isn't forcing the controversial change from Manifest V3, which was the API change for network requests that limited the ability of some content/ad-blocking extensions. Apple might decide to follow Google's lead in the future, but for now, both the old and new network request APIs will be supported.

There are a few other changes in Safari 15.4, including updates to the Web Inspector, new font options, and much more. If you're a web developer, or just interested in the inner workings of Safari, I definitely recommend checking out the source link below.

Apple 's latest public beta release of iOS 15 contains several improvements to Safari for the iPhone that should ease the minds of those that found the previous beta inconvenient to use. A happy balance between change and familiarity is often the best approach to satisfy a broad user-base and Apple did resolve some of the biggest issues in this version. This might not satisfy everyone, but shows an ability to respond when a design change impedes functionality.

Apple updates the iPhone's operating system annually but actually works on it year-round with security updates and bug fixes as issues arise. New versions begin work behind the scenes and undergo testing by Apple employees. As the latest version of iOS becomes more reliable, it is presented as an optional download for developers in order to test their apps, incorporate new features, and meet updated requirements. The next stage is public beta testing which allows any iPhone user the opportunity to try the new version before the general release that happens in the fall.

Apple recently rolled out a new release of the iOS public beta version 4. Safari saw some of the biggest changes ever in iOS 15 with a redesigned tab bar that some found worrisome . The most notable switch is that the bar had dropped from the top of the screen to the bottom. This isn't an arbitrary visual update, but rather a usability-driven change. For one-handed use, the tab bar is much more reachable with a thumb when it's placed low. This remains the same and the innovative tab groups are also intact in the latest update. However, some controls that were hidden behind a menu option have been surfaced, which should be a welcome change for all.

More Accessible Share, Reader & Reload

With the latest iOS 15 beta 4, Apple resolved a problem with the tab bar controls being placed behind a menu. Now a lock for secure websites shows to the left within the Smart Search field and a Reader mode icon is visible at the right. The Reader icon changes to a reload button after scrolling down a bit, allowing two buttons in the space of one. The control to show tabs is at the bottom on the far right and just to its left, the Share icon has returned. Many will be sighing with relief hearing that, since it was awkward for Apple to require two taps to reach this commonly used control with earlier betas. However, that is the value of beta testing. Apple has an excellent design sense but sometimes misses the mark of perfection. That's when feedback can make a difference and it certainly has with this latest version of Safari .

There is one hidden feature that still might be troublesome for users. Unfortunately, it isn't apparent how to access bookmarks although they can be opened quickly by pressing and holding the Smart Search field, which opens a menu showing options to add to bookmarks, show bookmarks, as well as a way to add to the Reading list. It wouldn't be surprising if a fifth beta makes bookmarks more obvious. Naturally, beta software isn't appropriate for everyone. Sometimes things break, battery life is often lower, and unexpected glitches can happen. For those eager enough and comfortable with change, it is a great opportunity to shape the future of iOS by testing and sharing feedback. The recent changes to Safari provide an excellent example of Apple's ability to adapt its design when needed.

Apple Releases Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina

Apple today released Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina, giving Mac users who do not have macOS Monterey installed access to the latest Safari features.

macOS Monterey Release Candidate Safari Tabs Feature

In Safari 15.1, Apple undid those design changes and returned Safari to its pre-Monterey look, doing away with the updated design and the feature that blended the top bar in Safari with the background color of websites. Those who liked the new design can still enable it in Safari preferences, but the old design is the default.

Safari can be downloaded on machines running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina by going to System Preferences > Updates. If you have macOS Monterey 12.0.1 installed, you already have Safari 15.1.

Apple releases redesigned Safari 15 with Tab Groups, better performance

The Safari 15 update can be installed on Macs running macOS Big Sur or macOS Catalina . It introduces faster performance, improved security, and several new features that will debut on macOS Monterey when it's released later in 2021.

The updates include Tab Groups , which lets users save and organize tabs into specific groups. Apple has also redesigned tabs to be rounder and more defined, and to take on the color of the webpage a user is currently on.

Safari 15 also introduces the option to switch to a "compact tab bar," which shows more of the webpage on a screen. This specific tab design was supposed to be the default, but proved confusing and controversial for some users. In Safari 15, it's still an option.

Additionally, the new version of Safari will also automatically switch sites from the less-secure HTTP to HTTPS whenever possible.

Users can download Safari 15 by heading to System Preferences and selecting Software Update. The update is relatively small, and doesn't require a restart.

It isn't clear when Apple will release macOS Monterey to the public, though it could debut the software update after a Mac-focused event unveiling 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models later in 2021.

Seems snappier!  :D

Love the new changes, although watch out on some websites. Safari's adopting of the color of website to be used on the tab bar and toolbar makes for a very loud (brightly colored) experience. The BBC's website, for example, is one very red surfing experience.  :D

How do you tun off the feature of the tool bar adopting website color?

Yes, how do you turn off the feature of toolbar, tab bar, and favourites bar adopting the website color? I looked everywhere in preferences and menus. Found no way to turn it off. I can live with the new tab layout, chose the compact layout, but the constant change in appearance of toolbar and favourites bar with its associated menus is disorienting. I hate it.
