Sea of Thieves' new Pirate Legend voyage and story Adventure are now live

Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Neowin @LoneWolfSL · Apr 21, 2022 07:42 EDT with 1 comment

A month has passed since the previous Sea of Thieves Adventure, and that means Rare is back with another episode of its narrative formula for the pirate sandbox. Alongside the story mission, the promised addition of Pirate Legend voyages is now available as well, offering long-time players a new way to show off their knowledge of the seas and reap big rewards.

Titled The Shrouded Deep, this latest Adventure has pirates teaming up with the old Merrick and Belle to hunt elusive Megalodons, and even the fabled Shrouded Ghost. High-value loot and exclusive rewards are available to pirates completing the questline too. To get caught up on the lore leading up to this Adventure, fans can read this blog post by Rare .

Sea of Thieves screenshot

The long-time-coming exclusive voyages for Pirate Legends (players who have reached level 50 in three different Trading Companies) are finally here with this update. Described as experiences that combine the cinematic flourishes of Tall Tales while combining the elements of all other standard voyages, the new Legend of the Veil quests has Pirate Legends searching for Veil Stones.

Each objective in a Pirate Legend voyage is modular, letting the game mix and match various aspects of other voyages and puzzles, with additional twists to make it more difficult, to offer an extended and rewarding experience.

While picking up a Legend of the Veil voyage is exclusive to Pirate Legends, they may gift the missions to regular players as well. Watch Rare's Legend of the Veil deep dive video below to get the full picture of how these more difficult missions will progress.

The Shrouded Deep: A Sea of Thieves Adventure can now be accessed by players on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Cloud Gaming, and all variants of Game Pass. This is a limited-time event, so pirates may want to jump in to witness the storyline before it goes away on May 12.

Complete patch notes for the 5GB update of today can be seen here . Rare has nine more Adventures planned for Sea of Thieves in 2022 alongside the regular content injections.

Sea of Thieves Pirate Legend: The final riddle and the Mysterious Strangers

How Sea of Thieves gets you started on the path toward Pirate Legend

Prod1gyX points toward the pirate hideout in Sea of Thieves.

Sea of Thieves Pirate Legend status is just the first major hurdle in the game, but it's the most prestigious one that entices countless players every day to set sail once again. Achieving Pirate Legend status requires players hit level 50 in the Sea of Thieves original three companies: Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance. Getting there is fun, but it's a grind too, so use our guide on how to start your quest to become a Sea of Thieves Pirate Legend.

Becoming a Sea of Thieves pirate legend will gain you access to exclusive clothes, ship decorations and open up the Pirate Legend Hideout. Rare has added a lot of exclusive cosmetics for those that prove themselves worthy - things like new hair styles and multi-colored hair dyes, so follow our guide to quickly attain levels 50/50/50 in the game's original factions.

How do you become a Pirate Legend?

Easy! Just reach level 50 with all the in-game factions then solve a few more riddles Wait, sorry, that's not easy - that's super hard, or at least very time consuming. There are no tricks to it, just a whole lot of leg work. Fortunately, we have some more guides to get you started building up your rep with the factions.

Once you reach 50 with every faction and purchase all your promotion, you can talk to the Mysterious Stranger for the final step toward becoming a pirate legend. Spoiler warning in case you'd rather figure the last part out yourself. The Stranger will give you access to a special new sea shanty and one final riddle: "Take this tune and make a sound, the secret lies near in the ground." Do what the Stranger says and play your new shanty in the tavern, and you'll notice a glowing insignia appear on some of the cobblestones nearby. Then they'll drop down and reveal a hidden entrance to the pirate hideaway!

What are the rewards for being a Pirate Legend?

A fully clothed Pirate Legend in Sea of Thieves.

Aside from the inherent bragging rights of being a legendary pirate, you'll get quite a few exclusive rewards for your troubles. They start with gaining admission to an exclusive Pirate Legend hideout located somewhere in the Sea of Thieves (you can take your non-legendary crewmates in with you if you want). Inside you can collect extra-lucrative Pirate Legend Voyages and purchase customization options to kit out both yourself and your ship. See the full set of Pirate Legend clothes above.

Later on, Rare plans to allow Pirate Legends become Legendary Captains with their own special vessels - they'll spawn in at the hideout and then sail their ship right out from a hidden cave under a waterfall, Goonies-style! You'll have to put even more work in to get to that point, though.

Who is the Mysterious Stranger?

They wouldn't be very mysterious if we knew the answer to that question, would they? All you need to know is that there are many of them, and that they're key in your quest to becoming a Pirate Legend. Don't expect them to be of much help before you reach that everybody-at-50 prerequisite - they'll just keep telling you to report back when you're a few levels higher.

Where is the Mysterious Stranger?

You'll find a Mysterious Stranger lurking at the back of every tavern in every outpost in the Sea of Thieves (you appear at a tavern whenever you log in). They're the ones with the glowing eyes, you really can't miss them. Every Mysterious Stranger serves the same purpose - think of them as particularly cryptic faction reps - so don't worry about which one you talk to.

Sea of Thieves: Legend of the Veil Voyage guide – How to find Veil Stones

You can never do enough for the Pirate Lord.

Becoming a Pirate Legend in Sea of Thieves has its perks, but it’s really an opportunity for longtime players to have more to do in the endgame. Legend of the Veil is a Voyage type that only Pirate Legends can purchase and propose, though any player in a party with a Pirate Legend can partake. This is a multi-step quest, and like other types of Voyages in Sea of Thieves, there is an element of randomization. We’ll take you through all the possible steps, though.

Related: How to achieve Pirate Legend status in Sea of Thieves

How to start the Legend of the Veil voyage

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

Basically, your main objective in Legend of the Veil is to obtain three Veil Stones, which you will put into the Veil of the Ancients. Buy this quest from the Pirate Lord for 250 Gold in the secret Athena’s Fortune hideout (again, only Pirate Legends can open this space) and vote on this quest on your ship. The Pirate Lord will give some exposition, present the Veil of the Ancients to you, and give you your quest logs in a book.

There are three different possible quests you will go through to obtain the first two Veil Stones; the third Veil Stone will be obtained from a battle at the end.

Sudds Veil Stone quest

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

The end of your Quest Book may direct you to find Sudds, an astronomer and the North Star Seapost merchant. The book will explicitly tell you on which island to find Sudds — in our first example, he was on The Crooked Masts. Prepare to find him and get ready to do some map reading and test your knowledge of the Sea of Thieves world.

Speak to Sudds once you find him on the right island. He will add to your quest book, and you’ll receive one of a few different types of maps.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

  • Our example above shows a distinct island in Sea of Thieves with an X that marks the spot, like a traditional Sea of Thieves map — this one, however, is zoomed in , so you’ll have to figure out exactly which island this is first.
  • Another possible Sudds puzzle is a pictorial map — instead of showing you the landscape of the island, this image in your book will be from a first-person perspective sketch and challenge your memory of certain landmarks in the game. These sketches take up two pages of your book and will have a symbol to show where to dig for the Veil Stone.
  • Finally, the last possible Sudds puzzle has a map with a variety of symbols . These symbols correspond with paintings on rocks and walls. The key here is to figure out which symbol on the map is erroneous and not actually there; this is where you’ll find the burial site of the Veil Stone.

Belle Veil Stone quest

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

Similar to Sudds, the location of the character of Belle will be at the end of your Quest Book. Sail to that island, where you will find an eerie ghastly aura surrounding it. Find Belle on the island and speak with her; she will provide you with an Enchanted Lantern.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

In short, your task here is to light braziers on six ancient statues, the first being next to Belle; however, you can only see these statues while you hold the Enchanted Lantern up. When you first start this task, you will see pillars of light over the remaining statues. These won’t be around forever, but they’re a good starting point, and your Lantern will basically act as a radar for these statues. This may take a while if you have one or two left remaining, so comb the island and hold up your lantern; try not to sprint too much, as sprinting will lower your lantern.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

After lighting the final brazier, one final pillar of light will appear on the island. Surrounding that statue are Ancients performing a ritual, but Phantoms will appear to attack you and these Ancients. It will be a lengthy battle, especially if you are alone in your crew, but the Ancients will (somewhat) help. Make sure you have enough fruit, and you’ll eventually face off against the Soulflame Captain. After defeating this final miniboss, one of the Ancients will hand you a Veil Stone.

Shipwreck Veil Stone quest

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

This quest is just like standard shipwreck encounters in the game, but here, you’ll find a Veil Stone. Check your Quest Book for directions on where to go; as usual, look for the flock of seagulls flying in a circle. There will be multiple wrecked ships in this mess.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

The Veil Stone will be in the Captain’s Quarters of the Grim Fortune. First, you must identify that ship through the nameplates above the Captain’s Quarters door. Then, search that ship for the Ships Log. That will add pages to your Quest Book and tell you which of the shipwrecks has the Grim Fortune’s Key.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

Identify the ship listed in the Ships Log and search every nook and cranny for that key, moving objects around, opening cabinet doors, and removing lids. Even the most menial props may be hiding it. With that key, you can then open the Grim Forture’s Captain’s Quarters and obtain the chest holding a Veil Stone.

Final Veil Stone – Ghost Fort battle

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

After obtaining two Veil Stones and placing them into the Legend of the Veil, you’ll then have to engage in a ship battle. It’ll be easy to find — after the Pirate Lord gives you instructions, look out for the giant tornado in the distance. Sail towards it.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

You’ll see haunted sea fort emplacements, with ghost ships surrounding them. You can fight back against the ghost ships, or you can focus on destroying these forts. The three surrounding emplacements will take five cannonballs each to defeat — you’ll know you’ve successfully hit the fort if your cannon shot leaves a nice green glow on the Wall.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

After defeating these emplacements, you’ll destroy the last fort, which will emerge when the tornado stops. Employ the same strategy to end this final ghost fort, but this will take a lot more time and firepower. Aim above at the towers and from where enemy cannon fire is coming from — again, notice the green glow marks to confirm your hits.

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

Your reward will be sitting in the remains of the fort: numerous pieces of treasure, including the final Veil Stone to place in the Veil of the Ancients.

Sea of Thieves Pirate Legend and Mysterious Stranger explained - riddle solution, rewards, and how to become Pirate Legend

Everything you need to know about becoming Pirate Legend.

Sea of Thieves' Mysterious Stranger and the much-touted status of Pirate Legend are closely linked, with the stranger forming the gateway to the game's interesting-sounding late game.

Here on this page we'll let you know just who the Mysterious Stranger is, as well as the Pirate Legend riddle solution , what you can expect from when you become Pirate Legend, how to become Pirate Legend and what we know about Pirate Legend rewards , of course, too.

A word of warning though: there will of course be spoilers for just about everything to do with Pirate Legend, below.

Sea of Thieves' Mysterious Stranger explained - riddle solution and how to become Pirate Legend

The Mysterious Stranger is the person lurking in the corner of the Outpost island taverns. Talk to them at various levels and they'll give you a little bit of dialogue, always to the effect of "great, now come back when you're a higher level".

pirate legend voyage sea of thieves

How to become Pirate Legend

Level 50 - in all three factions: the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls and Merchant Alliance - is what you will eventually need to reach. It's an almighty grind, but get there and the Mysterious Stranger will have something else to say to you at last.

Talk to them when you've reached max level in all three factions and they'll grant you a new title, outfit, and most importantly a new shanty - a song you can play with your instruments.

Along with that you'll get a riddle:

Through many voyages upon the sea, you searched to find the legends key. Now one last step to pass the tests, to find where Athena's Fortune rests. Take this tune and make a sound, the secret lies near in the ground.

The riddle solution, if you hadn't guessed already, is to play the new shanty with your instrument whilst inside that same tavern with the Mysterious Stranger.

Do it right and you'll hear the ground open up nearby - a staircase will form out of the floorboards and, following it, you'll be lead into a tunnel until you reach a waterfall.

Head through the waterfall and, on the other side, you'll find your Legendary Hideout, including a new tavern, several NPCs, a shipwright vendor and a new vendor of Legendary Voyages.

The first season has arrived! Learn about all Season 1 Battle Pass rewards and everything else added in the Sea of Thieves patch notes . New to the game? Learn what to do in Sea of Thieves and take take part in the Maiden Voyage tutorial , which teaches you the essentials of sailing and ship battles . It's also useful for beginners to know how to survive fights with skeletons and the kraken . Elsewhere we have advice on how to get easy gold and doubloons , complete skeleton forts and The Shroudbreaker , take part in fishing in Sea of Thieves and Sea of Thieves island maps .

Pirate Legend explained - what is Pirate Legend and what are the Pirate Legend rewards?

The initial rewards for Pirate Legend are what we've already noted above: namely a new title, outfit and shanty to play with your instruments.

The broader reward is your access to the Legendary Hideout. From there, you'll be able to undertake special, longer versions of voyages - although they operate in largely the same manner - and receive special Ancient Chests as rewards, which we understand to contain new items that allow further customisation of your character and ship.

We'll update this page when we know some more precise details, but the main takeaway is this: becoming Pirate Legend is mostly a case of doing it for the pride.

Reach Rank 50 Reputation with 3 Different Trading Companies

Sea of Thieves - Reputation Page.png

The only requirement to achieving the Pirate Legend status is to reach rank 50 Reputation with three different Trading Companies and buy the corresponding rank 50 promotions for each one. Afterwhich, you have to speak to the Mysterious Stranger at any tavern.

Trading Company Reputation can be raised by turning in company-relevant items at the respective NPCs, earning commendations , and lowering emissary flags that are Grade 2 or higher (except Hunter's Call).

You have the freedom to choose among the five Trading Companies available before becoming a Pirate Legend to raise to rank 50.

List of All Trading Companies

Focus on the Starter Companies

Sea of Thieves - Focus on the Starter Companies

The easiest companies to do would be the three starter ones: Gold Hoarders , Order of Souls , and Merchant Alliance . These companies offer voyages for you to do right from the start allowing you to naturally find company-related items to turn in. The other companies, Reaper's Bones and Hunter's Call , do not offer voyages .

Reaper's Bones

Sea of Thieves - Reaper

While Reaper's Bones accept items from other companies, they give lesser reputation than Reaper-specific items. The fastest way to raise reputation would then be to PvP and take emissary flags from other players, Reaper's Chests , and Reaper's Bounties .

Hunter's Call

Sea of Thieves - Hunter

Hunter's Call will have you look for fish and meat to cook and turn in for reputation. The fastest way to raise reputation would be to keep fishing and cooking while aiming for commendations .

Become Emissaries

Sea of Thieves - Become Emissaries

With the exception of the Hunter's Call, you can become emissaries for all the other companies. Becoming an emissary for a company will give bonus gold and reputation for turn-ins with that company increasing with Emissary Grade.

This is super helpful when grinding out reputation levels and should always be used almost all the time. The only time being an emissary would be difficult is if there are active PvP players and especially Reaper's Bones emissaries in the server.

Play in High Seas

Sea of Thieves - High Seas Offers the Original Multiplayer Experience.png

Even with the risk of PvP, playing in High Seas is the best option when grinding for reputation since Safer Seas will only allow you to earn 30% of the reputation you would make in High Seas . Additionally, you will be unable to raise reputation above rank 40 in Safer Seas.

  • High Seas vs. Safer Seas

Athena's Fortune Hideout

Sea of Thieves - Athena

Once you talk to the Mysterious Stranger after reaching the required reputation, he will teach you the Shanty of Legends . Playing the shanty while in any tavern will open a secret passage leading to the Athena's Fortune Hideout .

Furthermore, achieving Pirate Legend status will grant access to the Athena's Fortune Trading Company, allowing the player to earn reputation with the company and become an emissary.

Legendary Cosmetics

Sea of Thieves - Pirate Legend Cosmetics

Pirate Legends will earn the title and Legendary Clothes and Vanity Items for free upon becoming one. Other cosmetic items for both player and ship also become available from both the Athena's Fortune Shopkeeper and Shipwright at the hideout. Additional pet outfits are also unlocked at the Pirate Emporium.

Legendary Voyages

Athena's Fortune Voyages are made available at the hideout which lead to high-value treasure items. Pirate Legends may also participate in legend-only Mercenary Voyages that are usually released during every major content update.

Honkai Star Rail: 10 Most Powerful Characters According To The Lore

The first descendant review-in-progress: it’s time to grind, call of duty: modern warfare 3 - best reclaimer 18 loadouts, quick links, reach level 50 in three trading companies, purchase level 50 promotions, speak with the mysterious stranger, athena's fortune hideaway, pirate legend perks.

Pirate Legend is the top-tier status in Sea of Thieves . In a game characterized by its grind, the acquisition of this sought-after title is no different. You will need to complete specific steps and requirements to obtain Pirate Legend, but it's an achievement that's well worth the effort.

Beyond the title itself, becoming a Pirate Legend unlocks several rewards and new opportunities. This includes, but is not limited to, new outfits and cosmetics for your Pirate, new ship cosmetics, and new quests and challenges to complete. Complete the following steps to reach the status of Pirate Legend, truly unlocking the end-game in Sea of Thieves.

The first thing that you will need to do is reach level 50 in three different Trading Companies. There are currently five Trading Companies in Sea of Thieves (excluding Athena's Fortune , unlocked upon reaching Pirate Legend):

  • Gold Hoarders
  • Order of Souls
  • Merchant Alliance
  • Reaper's Bones
  • The Hunter's Call

Time and effort spent doing this will serve as the bulk of your journey toward Pirate Legend status. Although this will present you with an inevitable grind, there are a few things that can be done to help ensure that your time at sea is spent efficiently.

Though you can use any of these companies to obtain Pirate Legend, it is typically easiest to focus on Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance. These three Trading Companies have specific quests that can be completed, allowing for level 50 to be reached at a much faster rate than the others. Raise emissary flags , complete quests, and turn in loot for any of these Trading Companies to increase your level quickly, reducing the time spent completing this step.

Larinna (found outside the Tavern at each Outpost) sells Letters of Recommendation , refreshing monthly. Sold for 30 Dubloons each, these items increase the level of a specific Trading Company by one ; currently offered for all Trading Companies except for Reaper's Bones and Athena's Fortune.

After reaching level 50 in three different Trading Companies, you will need to purchase their corresponding Level 50 Promotions. Promotions are sold by the representative of each Trading Company, typically available for purchase each time you increase their respective level by increments of five or ten.

Go to each Trading Company representative (found at any Outpost), and purchase their level 50 Promotions. This will unlock several items available for purchase at these NPCs, but more importantly, it's essential in your quest to achieve the Pirate Legend title.

Although it is not necessary, it is helpful to purchase these Promotions whenever they become available . Each time a Promotion is purchased, the quests available for that particular Trading Company will be upgraded; providing more valuable rewards and helping to increase your level at a faster rate.

You will now have to go to the Tavern at any Outpost and speak with the Mysterious Stranger (found in the back of the building). If the previous steps have been completed, doing this will unlock the following:

  • The "Pirate Legend" Title
  • The Legendary Clothing Set
  • The Shanty of Legends

Now that you are a Pirate Legend, go to the left side of the Tavern (the side with the blocked-off staircase), and play the shanty, Maiden Voyage , on any of your instruments. This will cause the Athena's Fortune emblem to glow in green on the floor, eventually revealing a hidden staircase leading below to the Athena's Fortune Hideaway , a small hub area available to Pirate Legends.

Once you have achieved the status of Pirate Legend, the majority of your perks can be found in the Athena's Fortune Hideaway. There are vendors in this area selling exclusive clothing, equipment, and Pirate and Ship cosmetics only available to Pirate Legends.

You will not be able to purchase many of these items at first, but they can be unlocked by completing various Athena's Fortune Commendations . These commendations offer Pirate Legends several challenges that can be completed across the Sea of Thieves, not only unlocking different items in the Athena's Fortune Hideaway but also granting rewards and boosts to your Athena's Fortune Reputation.

The Pirate Lord can also be found in this area. This NPC serves as the representative for the Athena's Fortune Trading Company, unlocked upon achieving Pirate Legend. Here you can purchase Athena's Fortune Voyages, Promotions , and Trading Company cosmetics .

Beyond the initial rewards and access to the Athena's Fortune Hideaway, there are many perks that you will be granted upon obtaining Pirate Legend. The perks that are currently available to Pirate Legends include:

  • New Titles are available by completing Athena's Fortune Commendations
  • Legendary Pet Outfits
  • Legendary Mercenary Voyages
  • Exclusive Pirate Legend reward once reached Renown Level 100 in each Season's Plunder Pass

Make sure to take advantage of current and future features offered to Pirate Legends to increase your Athena's Fortune reputation and maximize your Pirate Legend Rewards.

Pirate legend.

Double Quotations Left.png

Don't think you can afford to take it easy though. Now that you're a Pirate Legend, your journey's only just begun…

Pirate Legend is a milestone Title that, once earned, grants players additional perks within Sea of Thieves .

The title is awarded to players that have reached level 50 in three different Trading Companies , and bought the corresponding level 50 promotions. Players must then speak to the Mysterious Stranger , who will reward the Title, the Legendary Set clothing, and the Shanty of Legends that's used to access the Athena's Fortune Hideout .

Title and Clothes

The player will immediately acquire the Pirate Legend Title and the Legendary Set clothing and vanity items for free to equip at the Clothing Chest and Vanity Chest .

Athena's Fortune Hideout

Access to the Athena's Fortune Hideout is the main benefit of a Pirate Legend. Legends can approach the Mysterious Stranger to assess their reputation. He will teach the Shanty of Legends , which can be played with Instruments only by the ground in the middle of the Tavern , near the stairs, opening up a passage to the Hideout.

At the hideout, Pirate Legends can buy Legendary Athena's Fortune Voyages or the Athena's Fortune Emissary Flag allowing them to access various high value treasure items and better gains. Additionally, Pirates can talk to the Shopkeepers to unlock and purchase other Legendary Set , Ghost Set , Dark Adventurers Set , or other cosmetics.

Legendary Commendations and Titles

While not necessarily tied to being a Pirate Legend, many of Athena's Fortune Commendations and Titles become available once a player has acquired the Pirate Legend Title and completes certain feats at The Sea of Thieves . Most of these Commendations have five Grades, some of which unlock various Legendary or Ghost items for purchase, or unlock a Title of the same name in the Vanity Chest .

Legendary Voyages

Previously, every major Content Update brings along with it a handful of Mercenary Voyages , where one was always locked for Pirate Legends. These Legendary Voyages always had greater rewards and challenges than the regular versions of the Voyages.

Additionally, there are a handful of permanent voyages exclusive to pirate legends.

  • Athena's Fortune Voyage
  • Ashen Athena's Fortune Voyage
  • Athena's Run of Thieves' Haven
  • Legend of the Veil

As well as a handful of exclusive Captain's Voyages for those of you owning a Captained ship.

Seasonal Rewards

Every season there are at least two unique rewards granted to those who manage to reach the requisite season level while also achieving Pirate Legend before the end of the season. These rewards are often themed after key figured in the Sea of Thieves Universe, such as Merrick and Captain Flameheart .

Multiple Other Cosmetics

In addition to all the aforementioned rewards, there are a handful of exclusive items which are only available to pirate legends regardless of their progress in the Athena's Fortune emissary.

Sea Of Thieves: How To Complete A Sea Fort

Quick links, how to complete a sea fort encounter, what to do with a sea fort.

Sea Of Thieves has so many destinations for pirates to sail to, and each one comes with new opportunities for adventure and plunder. Much like the Skeleton Forts that are scattered across the world, Sea Forts are full of treasure and violent, sword-slashing, trigger-happy phantoms.

Sea Of Thieves: How To Obtain Every Curse

So, what's the deal with these Sea Forts? How do you clear them out and get all the treasure that's stashed away inside their various nooks and crannies? Well, we're going to tell you everything that we know about Sea Forts so you can maximize your haul of ghostly gold.

Updated December 25, 2023, by Sean Murray: The Ancient Gold Fortress in Sea of Thieves is calling to adventurous captains just waiting to plunder it. That's why we've updated this guide with improved formatting, more breakout tips, and links to other helpful Sea of Thieves topics. Arr.

As of this writing, there are currently 6 Sea Forts with the Ancient Isles , Shores Of Plenty , and Wilds regions of the map each containing 2 apiece. This is the full list of them so far:

  • Ancient Gold Fortress
  • Old Brinestone Fortress
  • Imperial Crown Fortress
  • Royal Crest Fortress
  • Mercy's End Fortress
  • Traitor's Fate Fortress

The key difference between Sea Forts and Skeleton Forts is that Sea Forts don't require a world event to be active . When you sail to a Sea Fort, it will always be full of enemies to fight and treasure to loot unless another crew gets to it first.

When you arrive at a Sea Fort, you'll immediately be shot at by multiple cannons . Their aim is usually pretty terrible, but be ready to repair your ship's hull and bail out some water just in case. Once you get into the fort you'll be attacked by mobs of phantoms . Shooting them with a Blunderbuss or slashing them with your sword are effective ways of dealing with them.

There's a good chance that they'll drop ammo pouches when they're defeated, so you shouldn't have difficulty keeping your guns loaded.

You'll have to fight multiple waves of phantoms before the Captain Of The Fortress - which is the Sea Fort boss - will show up. There doesn't seem to be much difference between a regular phantom and the Captain other than it has more health and is slightly stronger . Continue to blast it with guns or wail on it with your sword, and you should eventually beat it and hear the triumphant music indicating that you've captured the fort.

Sea Of Thieves: How Captaincy Works

Upon defeat, the Captain Of The Fortress should drop the Fortress Treasury Key that you can use to open the treasury full of phantom treasures. Inside you should find multiple Chests Of The Damned, Skulls Of The Damned, and Ashes Of The Damned that can be sold to their corresponding trading companies. There will also be various regular chests, skulls, crates, and artifacts along with piles of gold that you can pick up.

In addition to the treasury, the top floor of these Sea Forts will have a store room with extra treasures that can only be opened if you have the Fortress Store Room Key . To find this, you need to rummage through the fort and locate it . There will be many cupboards, storage chests, and other hidden compartments that you can open that may contain stashed away treasures or gold pouches. The Store Room Key will either be in one of these or will be lying on a table.

Once it was even found just sitting on the ground .

You'll also notice a prison cell near the treasury that's currently locked. It'll tell you that it requires the Prison Cell Key to open, but as of right now, no one has been able to find that particular key at any of the Sea Forts. Sea Of Thieves is due to have a pirate legend voyage added sometime later, so we're assuming that that voyage may be related to these jail cells. For now, there doesn't seem to be a way to get inside .

After you've cleared all the phantoms and looted all the treasure, Sea Forts can be used as a makeshift base for your crew . Here you can cook multiple pieces of meat on the grill, refill your tankards with grog, fire at other ships using the fort's cannons, sleep in one of the beds, and use the map that's located on the wall. Several barrels are filled to the brim with food, cannonballs, and wood.

It's a good idea to have a storage crate handy , so you can fill it up with everything that the Sea Fort has to offer.

Finally, as with most activities in Sea Of Thieves, there are commendations that you can receive for completing certain tasks . Here's the list of commendations that you can get that are related to these Sea Forts:

Mechanics [ ]

Purchasing [ ].

Voyages can be purchased from Trading Company representatives or from the Black Market at any Outpost . Any purchased Voyages will be held in the player's Voyage Inventory , which is accessed through the Pirate Menu . A player can hold up to three regular Trading Company Voyages and as well as an infinite number of special Voyages. When the Voyage Inventory is full, players can no longer purchase regular Voyages. Any held Voyages can be discarded from the Voyage Inventory.

In order to begin a Voyage, a crew or alliance member must interact with the ship's Captain's Table to place down a Voyage from their Voyage Inventory for voting. If the crew has only one player, the Voyage will begin immediately. If not, the Voyage has to receive a majority vote to begin. Once voted for, the Voyage will become active, indicated with a title card for the Voyage. A Captain's Table can have up to four Voyages put up for a vote, but only one currently active Voyage and one Tall Tale . Once selected, the type of a Voyage is visible on the Captain's Table for all crews to see.

Crews can vote to cancel any active Voyage by voting at the Captain's Table.

Gameplay [ ]

A single Voyage is usually composed of a variable number of quests and chapters. The difficulty, number of objectives and the overall length of Voyages purchased from the Gold Hoarders , Order of Souls and Merchant Alliance increases with the player's purchased promotions with the respective companies.

Each Trading Company Voyage consists of unique quest types, varying from classic treasure maps to engaging combat or cargo shipping, as well as many more.

A multi-chapter Voyage is indicated by "Chapter One" appearing on the title card of the activated Voyage. These Voyages present quests in chapters, with following chapters appearing only when all the quests of the previous chapter are completed. The completion of a chapter is always indicated with another title card, with the last chapter always being introduced as the "Final Chapter". Once a Voyage is complete, a final title card will be presented to indicate its completion.

Types of Voyages [ ]

Voyages are generally themed around the Trading Company that provides them, sending players in search of treasure , locations or NPCs relevant to the company. Most Voyages take part in the three main regions of the Sea of Thieves , although Devil's Roar Voyages, focused in that region but with higher rewards, can be purchased from Morrow's Peak Outpost.

Gold Hoarders Voyages [ ]

Purchased from Gold Hoarder NPCs at any Outpost .

These Voyages are themed around retrieving stashed riches and gold, buried on islands or hidden in vaults.

Treasure Map Voyage [ ]

Treasure Map Voyages include a mix of X Marks the Spot Maps and Riddle Maps . X Marks the Spot Maps require players to identify a number of islands from an illustrated map, and use a shovel to dig in multiple X marked locations from the map. Riddle Maps require players to solve 2-4 clues and puzzles, which leads to buried treasure . The Voyage is considered complete once every item has been dug up.

Wayfinder Voyage [ ]

Wayfinder Voyages can be purchased by players who have the rank 25 promotion with the Gold Hoarders. This Voyage gives players access to a Wayfinder Compass that leads them to the burial location of a Treasure Vault Key . These keys can be sold or used to unlock a Gold Hoarder Treasure Vault .

Onboarding Voyage [ ]

The Onboarding Voyage is an introductory Voyage offered by the Gold Hoarders . This Voyage can only be bought and placed on a Voyage Table by new players who have just completed the Maiden Voyage . The Onboarding Voyage teaches players how to buy, vote for and complete a Voyage.

Merchant Alliance Voyages [ ]

Purchased from Merchant Alliance NPCs at any Outpost .

These Voyages are themed around retrieving, collecting and delivering goods, in the form of crates or caged animals.

Rewards Trade Good Crates and Cargo Crates .

Merchant Contract [ ]

Merchant Contracts require players to find and return animals and/or Gunpowder Barrels to a specific Outpost by a set time. Animals cabe captured inside animal crates provided by any Merchant Alliance NPCs, and kept alive until delivery.

Cargo Run [ ]

Cargo Runs requires players to pick-up and deliver a number of Cargo Crates from one specific NPC to another. The crates will be requested to be picked up from a nearby tavern , shopkeeper , Merchant Alliance or island NPC . The recipient NPC and delivery date are marked on the crates. The condition of these crates can degrade and must be taken care of to increase gold reward on delivery.

Lost Shipments [ ]

Lost Shipments provide players with a single trade route map, which shows the route of a previous merchant ship. Players will need to follow the route in search of birds circling debris where clues can be found. One of these debris piles will contain the Captain's Key which, after following clues to the shipwreck, can be used to unlock the captain's cabin full of Trade Good Crates .

Order of Souls Voyages [ ]

Purchased from Order of Souls NPCs at any Outpost .

These Voyages are themed around combat, either hand-to-hand or naval.

Rewards Bounty Skulls .

Ghost Ship Voyage [ ]

Ghost Ship Voyages require players to go to a specific large island surrounded by Ghost Ships . Players will need to use their ship's cannons to defeat a number of Ghost Ships , followed by a wave of Ghost Flagships and a Ghost Captain Ship . The Voyage is considered complete once the Ghost Captain Ship has been destroyed.

Athena's Fortune Voyages [ ]

While these Voyages can only be purchased by Pirate Legends from the Athena's Fortune Hideout , non-Pirate Legends can also complete this Voyage when it has been placed for voting on a ship's Voyage Table .

Voyage of Legends [ ]

The Voyage of Legends consists of two chapters, with the first composed of Quests from each of the three Trading Companies . This includes 2 X Marks the Spot Maps , 2 Riddle Maps , 2 Bounty Voyages and 2 Cargo Runs . The final chapter provides a single map leading to a Chest of Legends .

Legend of the Veil [ ]

Legend of the Veil is a three-chapter voyage in which players will meet with the Pirate Lord and help him uncover the Veil Stones that belong to the Veil of the Ancients .

The first two chapters of the will always be random, with some chapters being puzzle-oriented whereas others are combat-oriented. The third and final chapter will always be the same, with players sieging a Sea Fort defended by multiple Ghost Ships and a large, green tornado. Completing this chapter will reward the bulk of the Voyage's treasure , including Athena's Fortune Treasure exclusive to the Legend of the Veil.

Bilge Rats Voyages [ ]

Purchased from Larinna outside any Outpost tavern .

Mercenary Voyages [ ]

Mercenary Voyages encapsulate a varied collection of Voyages with mixed Quests and objectives. Mercenary Voyages are mostly time-limited for the duration of a Content Update or event , costing Doubloons instead of gold to purchase. These Voyages vary in Quest types, locations, chapter numbers and treasure to match the current event. While Mercenary Voyages reward treasure, many also count for various Commendations , which can unlock time-limited titles or cosmetics when completed.

Stash Voyages [ ]

Stash Voyages are Mercenary Voyages that are permanently available for purchase from Larinna for a high Doubloons cost. These Voyages consist of a single Treasure Map for the closest Outpost , which rewards players with a single one of their chosen Bilge Rat Treasure items, necessary for interacting with other features in-game.

Athena's Run of Thieves' Haven [ ]

Doubloons

Gilded Voyages [ ]

Gilded Voyages are special, lucrative Voyages that are offered by the Bilge Rats for a limited time, usually during the holiday season. Gilded variations of Voyages from each Trading Company provides players with larger numbers of valuable treasures . Players can only obtain one Gilded Voyage per event.

Captain's Voyages [ ]

Captain's Voyages are more compact versions of regular Trading Company Voyages, but are only available to Captains and their crews. They can be purchased from the Shipwright Shop at any Outpost and allow players to choose from a variety of quest types, and a mix of shorter or more time-consuming Voyages. 50 of each can be stored in a Captained ship's on-board Voyage Storage, and can be voted upon from the ship's Voyage Table .

If you want more pets, or just want to know what they do in Sea of Thieves, this guide can help!
