Maybe you’ve booked a trip to Paris and are trying to figure out how to budget accordingly, or you’re just thinking about whether you can even swing a trip without breaking the bank. Whatever the case, we’ve got you covered with a full guide to Paris trip costs, including flights, hotels, food, transportation, nightlife, sightseeing, shopping, and more.
It goes without saying that actual costs will vary greatly depending on your tastes, preferences, and priorities, but this should give you a base from which to work off of. Seasonality also matters big time when it comes to Paris trip costs, as do major events, like this year’s Paris Olympics . But for the purposes of this guide, we estimated prices — which are exactly that, just estimates — based on an early-fall trip booked six months out, after the Olympic chaos has subsided.
Budgeting may not be the most fun part of travel planning, but future you will thank you. Your wallet will, too.
The actual costs will vary by person depending on their budget and travel style — and we dive into more travel budget nuances below — but let’s say you’re flying to Paris from the East coast, staying at a mid-range hotel close to the city center, taking public transportation around the city, checking the major museums and monuments off your list, eating at bistros, maybe going out a couple of nights, and hoping to fit a few souvenirs in your luggage. Here’s what your Paris budget would look like for the week-long trip:
Total cost: $4375 (but remember, if you’re not a solo traveler, it’ll be less since you’ll be splitting the cost of the hotel room)
Traveling from europe.
Taking a quick flight from another European city to Paris? You can score round-trip flights to and from Charles de Gaulle for as little as $65 from London, while other cities farther away (think Barcelona, Athens, and Rome) will run you between $80 and $130 round-trip.
If you’re coming from an East Coast city like New York or Boston, you can probably find flights for as low as $400, but with a fair amount of restrictions (like no carry-on luggage). The more likely scenario is that you’ll have to dish out $600 round-trip, give or take depending on seasonality.
Rates are comparable, if not a bit higher, from Midwestern cities like Chicago. But from the West Cost, even with the best deals, you’ll probably have to pay around $1000 for your tickets.
According to flight algorithm tools like Sky Scanner and Hopper, the cheapest month to fly to Paris is January — luckily there are plenty of things to do in winter in Paris for those intrigued by a New Year’s trip.
Luxury trip for 2.
If you’re looking for luxury hotel rooms and a 5-star, top-tier experience, it’ll run you $1500 – $2000 per night for a double room ($10,500 – $14,000 for a 7-night, one-week trip), with an additional cost if you tack on the hotel breakfast.
Luxury hotel options:
Middle-of-the-road hotel prices (i.e. still well-appointed and comfortable but not in the thousands per night) span $200 – $400 per night for a total cost between $1,400 – $2800 for 7 nights. These are typically 4-star properties.
Mid-range hotel options:
A budget hotel doesn’t have to cramp your travel style — many of them are centrally located near the city’s sightseeing gems. Estimated costs for 3-star properties are between $130 and $150/night (around $1000 for the week).
Budget hotel options:
If you find that hotels in Paris cost more than what you’re willing to shell out, then booking an Airbnb is a great way to visit Paris on a budget, especially if your travel style leans homier. There are Airbnbs all over Paris to accommodate all budgets, but the average cost per night is about $130. It will be a little cheaper if you want to book an individual room ($30 – $70 per night), and more for a private apartment ($50 – $200 per night). You can check out our guide to Paris Airbnbs to find a fit for your personal Paris budget, but overall an Airbnb can cost anywhere between $300 and $2400 for a week. But since larger Airbnbs can typically be shared among a few friends, a higher sticker price doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be paying that much more.
Not in a place to spend too much money on hotels? Pas de problème . Remember, Paris has its fair share of students studying abroad, so you’ll have many hostels to choose from that are suitable for a short trip or week-long adventure. The per night cost varies from $35-$60 per night depending on whether you’re interested in a single or shared room, but all-in you’ll only pay $245 – $420 for the week, which isn’t too shabby for a budget trip to Paris.
Hostel options:
Whether or not you’re a self-proclaimed foodie, there’s no denying the fact that dining plays a central role in any Paris experience on any budget.
Costs will vary depending on several factors:
With all that in mind, here’s what you need to know:
All in, you should budget between €40 – €50 for three mid-range meals a day.
If you’re in the mood to splurge on one Michelin-starred meal at a high-end restaurant, be prepared to spend €60 on the low end (and likely for lunch) and anywhere from €100 – €400 for dinner.
No Paris budget would be complete without considering public transportation. Even if you’re within walking distance from the city center with the most popular tourist destinations, odds are you’ll have to hop on the Paris Mètro at least a handful of times. Here’s what you need to know:
All-in, if you take the RER B to and from the airport and buy the 10-ticket Navigo pass during your week trip to Paris, it’ll add around €40 to your Paris costs.
Uber is also an option within the city — a 15-minute ride should cost you between €12 – €20, depending on the time of day and distance. But during rush hour, it’s often best to just hop on the Métro to save time (and money).
If you’re interested in sampling the robust nightlife scene in Paris, you’ll likely find yourself in Le Marais, Pigalle, Belleville, or Bastille neighborhoods. Estimated costs vary depending on how frequently you’re hoping to go out and what tier of establishments are up your alley.
Here’s how to think about nightlife budget:
With such a rich history, Paris offers no shortage of museums to visit, churches to marvel at, river cruises to take, and neighborhoods to wander through. How much you end up doing and seeing depends on how jam-packed you want your days to be. Below, you’ll find the sightseeing heavy hitters, and how much you should budget to see them.
Of the many museums in Paris (over 130!), the ones below are the most popular. The price listed is for general admission, but keep in mind that most offer free admission for those under 18, and either free or reduced admission for EU residents between the ages of 18-25. You’ll also get in for free at most museums if you’re a job seeker or holder of a valid Pass éducation.
Big museum buff? It may be worth purchasing the Paris museum pass , which will pay for itself between the fourth and sixth visit.
Among the many museums and monuments included are: the Louvre Museum, Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay, Musée de l’Orangerie, Quai Branly, Musée Picasso, Musée Rodin, Panthéon, Musée de l’Armée Tombeau de Napoleon, Musée de l’Histoire de l’Immigration, l’Arc de Triomphe, and even Versailles and the chateaux of the Loire Valley if you’re interested in a day trip or amazing weekend getaway.
Interested in seeing Paris from a different vantage point? There are no shortage of river cruises that go up and down the Seine river.
For luxury goods.
Major metropolitan cities like Paris offer almost unlimited access to big luxury brands. And while the Champs-Élysées may be THE shopping street that comes to mind, it’s definitely not the only one. In fact, many would advise you skip it entirely and instead make a beeline for Avenue Montaigne or Rue Du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, or Paris’s major department stores, like the Galeries Lafayettes and Le Bon Marché.
If you want to score some luxury goods during your trip to Paris, you’ll be surprised to find that they often cost much less than they do stateside. The Mon Tresor Brown Leather Mini Bag from Fendi is the perfect example. In the U.S., it comes in at a grand total of over $2,000 when you combine the retail price and the sales tax. But in Paris, it comes in at just under $1,500 (give or take depending on the exchange rate).
Chanel and Hermès are two other examples – when you compare prices, you’ll find that these made-in-France brands are cheaper to buy in Paris than in the United States.
The historic Marais district in central Paris is a go-to for small boutiques — we recommend sticking to rue des Frances Bourgeois, rue Vieille du Temple, rue de Turenne, and rue des Francs Bourgeois. You’ll also find charming independent boutiques by the Canal Saint-Martin in the 10th arrondissement (near the République or Louis Blanc metro stations). How much to budget varies by person depending on how much room you have in your luggage and what you’re looking for — but be prepared to reach deep into your wallet if any of the clothing, accessories, or homeware catches your eye. But remember, window shopping is always free!
To find decently-priced secondhand clothing during your trip to Paris, head to Untucked Friperie in the 12th arrondissement. This small shop sells luxury brands at three fixed prices: €25, €45, or €65. For more affordable finds, we recommend Alatone — there’s a location in the 1st and 2nd arrondissement. Also worth checking out: Chine Machine in Montmartre, Free’P’Star near Centre Pompidou, or any of the stores clustered around the Jacques Bonsergent Métro station along line 5 in the 10th arrondissement.
Flea markets — or les puces — are a great way to find one-of-a-kind items in Paris on a budget…if you know where to look. The most famous one, Marché aux Puces St-Ouen de Clignancourt, is right outside the péripherique (Paris’s outer border) and receives up to 200,000 visitors each weekend interested in scouring the used clothing, antique wears, and funky tchotchkes. If you do decide to go, keep your personal belongings close and beware of pickpockets!
Is paris expensive to visit.
A trip to Paris can be expensive at certain peak times of year (like the early summer months). And of course, the decision of what caliber hotel room you’re looking for and where in the city you want to be located can drive up prices, as can high-end meals and shopping. But it doesn’t have to break the bank… more on that below.
If your travel budget is tight, you can still experience Paris. There are good hotels on the budget-friendly side, wallet-friendly prix fixe menus at corner bistros, and no shortage of free things to do . Here’s a shortlist of our favorite no-cost activities to help you save money:
Also, even if you don’t want to splurge on on a ticket to go to the top of the Arc de Triomphe or Eiffel Tower, you can still get really close!
When you visit Paris, you’ll probably spend the most on hotels, followed by food.

It was a really good experience. This is my second trip with Eskapas. The first one was a small group tour fully escorted in Italy and it was wonderful. This trip is independent and you are joining at the meeting point to daily group ours. If you have send of orientation, it may be difficult so I recommend yo to take a taxi to reach out to the meeting points. Usually it costs 15-20Euro. The company upgraded our hotel to New Hotel Le Voltaire 4* ,, located in 11th Arrondissement, close to Bastille. It is a correct one, decent breakfast. Don't miss Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise which is close proximity.
I was kept informed & on promptly basis. A very professional approach by your staff
This was an amazing 3 day tour. Every day just got better and it was the right amount of sightseeing each day. The Chateaux’s were definitely my favourite part of the trip plus of course Mont-Saint-Michel! Leila our guide scores an 11/10. She was really what made the trip so special. Her diligence in keeping us to a fairly strict timetable was worth it so we didn’t miss our scheduled sightseeing. Truly a great trip to see the the Normandy beaches and explore some spectacular sights of France’s history. I couldn’t finish the review without a shout out to our driver “Brian”. It was the cherry on the top to an unforgettable experience ?

Travel Europe on a Budget
The Savvy Backpacker
Paris price guide | how much it costs to visit paris.
The daily travel costs to visit Paris, France. Tips for estimating your budget for food, hostels, hotels, attractions, alcohol & more.
Paris is one of the most popular destinations in Europe because it offers so many things—food, fashion, culture, nature, etc. But prices in Paris are generally high so it’s easy to blow your travel budget if you’re not careful. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to visit Paris affordably.
In this Paris travel price guide, we’ve outlined the estimated travel expenses for food, accommodation, attractions, alcohol, and other things that you’ll experience when you visit Paris
This Paris Price Guide is part of our City Price Guide Series where we break down the travel costs of Europe’s most popular cities.
It costs around €65-€95/day to visit Paris comfortably as a budget traveler.
If you want to upgrade your accommodations, add another €80-€100/night depending on your level of accommodation. These prices also don’t include big nights out at the bar/pub, club entry fees, souvenir/clothing shopping, tours, random purchases, nicer food, etc.
There is never a shortage of things to do and see in Paris. You can easily spend a few weeks and not see everything. Wanting to see a lot? You might be able to save some money by using the Paris Pass . Check out our Paris Pass Review to get the most value from this popular city pass.
Paris is world-renowned for its cuisine… but it comes at a cost. Luckily, even cash-strapped travelers can still eat well on a budget. However, it’s important to do your research because Paris is full of subpar restaurants so it’s easy to spend a lot of money on bad meals.
Check out The Savvy Backpacker’s guide to the Best Budget Restaurants in Paris to see how to eat cheaply in Paris.
Paris is a super walkable city so you’ll want to try walking as much as possible. You may find yourself only using public transportation once or twice. For this reason, we recommend purchasing a pack of 10 tickets and using them as needed. Note: The Métro (subway) and buses use the same ticket.
Since the beginning of 2022, metro tickets are still on sale, but are less widely used. They have been replaced by a rechargeable ‘Navigo Easy’ travel card , which is on sale in most stations on the Paris transport network, as well as in approved shops such as tobacconists, and can be recharged at station ticket offices, at kiosks or on the Île-de-France Mobilités application.
Budget hotels are small, kinda junky, and still fairly expensive in Paris. You’ll have to drop some cash to get something nice. Hostels in Paris also aren’t that great—especially for how much they cost but there are a handful of solid hostels.
The nightly price of a well-rated hostel in Paris starts around €36-€48/night per person—although many hostels raise their prices on the weekend. Remember, these prices are for a bed in a shared dorm room. Private rooms start are around €100-€160. Check out the latest hostel prices at Hostelworld .
The Best Hostels in Paris
Check out The Savvy Backpacker’s guide to The Best Hostels in Paris to get a more in-depth look at the city’s various hostel options.
A decent budget hotel near the city center will cost around €130/night. You can find cheaper hotels if you want to stay farther away from the center of the city or if you don’t mind staying in a super low-budget place.
Looking for a budget hotel? We suggest checking out Booking.com to see hotel prices for your dates since they’re always changing based on demand, time of year, etc.
Paris has more vacation rental apartments than any other city so you’ll find a wide range of options. These rentals can be a good option for large groups or travelers who want a little more space (and a kitchen). On the other hand, you may also have to deal with inconvenient check-in processes and things like extra cleaning fees and service charges (which makes short stays quite a bit more expensive). For short stays, we prefer hotels/hostels but rental apartments can be a nice option for longer stays. Airbnb is popular but here’s a list of Airbnb alternatives that could help you find cheaper/better options.

Not that you can ever go wrong with a trip to the City of Light.
Paris is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, stuffed with iconic landmarks, renowned museums, designer boutiques, and acclaimed restaurants.
There are advantages to visiting in every season. Although January through March are the chilliest months, they're also the quietest and the best for wrapping up in a chic coat and experiencing Paris like a local. In the spring, vibrant blooms in the famed jardins are a major draw, while the long summer days create the ideal conditions for sipping cocktails at an outdoor brasserie late into the evening. September and October are arguably the best months to visit, when the air turns brisk, Paris Fashion Week is in full force, and changing leaves accent the city.
To help you decide when to travel to Paris, here are the main tourist seasons:
Ready to book your trip to the City of Light? These are the best times to visit Paris depending on your priorities.
Paris is one of the most popular destinations in the world, with tourism peaking between June and August. There are major downsides to visiting Paris in its high season: Large crowds make exploring popular attractions like the Eiffel Tower and Louvre more time-consuming, and you might need a reservation to dine at trendy restaurants. Hotel prices, too, will inevitably climb in the summer months.
If your main objective is to avoid crowds, visit between October and April — sidestepping the jam-packed holiday season in December. Go at the beginning or end of this window for temperatures still comfortable enough to sit outside at one of the quintessentially Parisian cafe tables.
To see the city's top tourist attractions with fewer people around, aim to visit on weekday mornings, but check the official tourism website since many museums are closed one day or more each week. Other crowd-beating tactics include buying tickets that allow you to skip the line and walking instead of squeezing into public transportation. Paris is best enjoyed on foot anyway.
Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure
Travelers are drawn to Paris in the summer because of the long days and sunny weather. It's a stunning time to see the sights, from Sacré Cœur to the Jardin du Luxembourg, and the laid-back atmosphere at cafes and along the Seine is a treat. It's worth noting, however, that Paris is not known for its air conditioning. In fact, AC isn't as common in Europe as it is in the U.S., though most hotels have it. While Paris can see heat waves that bring temperatures in the 80s and 90s, summer temperatures are generally comfortable, in the mid-70s range.
Winter in Paris is relatively mild, but avoid visiting between December and February if you're averse to temperatures in the 30s and 40s. Does it snow in Paris? Not really. The city receives a dusting now and again, but visitors needn't pack bulky gear for extreme weather. Spring temperatures are typically pleasant, in the 50s and 60s, but come with a higher chance of rain — May is one of the rainiest months in Paris. Fall can also bring wet weather. From mid-September to November, after the Labor Day and Fashion Week rushes, Paris quiets down and the weather becomes crisp and autumnal.
The cheapest time to visit Paris is during the off-season — in the winter, before and after the holiday rush, which means early December, January, and February. These months see average temperatures in the 30s and 40s, but if you don't mind the cold, you'll likely save on flights, public transportation, attractions, and accommodations.
Visiting Paris in winter is special — not least because the restaurants are less crowded and attractions quieter — as well as easy and affordable. Cons include fewer tour options and less frequent tours, including a reduced timetable for cruises on the Seine.
The city's calendar is packed with festivals, holidays, and traditions worth traveling for. Let's start with the biggest sporting events: the Paris Marathon is typically held in April, the French Open begins in May and ends in June, and the Tour de France typically zooms into Paris in July.
In May, museums across the city open their doors for free perusing after hours on La Nuit des Musées . In the summer, the iconic Fête de la Musique brings live music to parks and other public spaces on June 21, and Bastille Day is marked by military parades and fireworks on July 14. The Paris Jazz Festival is an ongoing event from June to September. Both fall and spring attract the international style set to Paris Fashion Week, held in late September/early October and late February/early March.
Starting around mid-November, the holiday season in Paris sees grand boulevards like the Champs-Élysées ablaze with Christmas lights and holiday markets popping up around the city. Parisians wrap up the holidays with the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6, which is when you'll find king cake (or galette des rois ) on market tables and in bakery windows everywhere.
There's no bad time to visit Paris — the city is remarkable any time of year, even when it's bitterly cold or sweltering and teeming with tourists. But if you're easily annoyed by heat and crowds, you should probably think twice about a trip in July or August. If you happen to be in Paris during a heat wave, you could be quite uncomfortable sans AC in some attractions, shops, and cafes. And during the high season, prices are correspondingly high.
The holidays are another chaotic (albeit magical) time in Paris. By all means, go in December if you want to shop for unique gifts and see Christmas lights galore, but avoid this period if you're hoping for a quiet trip.

The question of when is the best time to visit Paris was answered by Audrey Hepburn in the 1963 classic Sabrina : “ Paris is always a good idea.” A spring stroll through the Jardin du Luxembourg, a summer evening along the Canal Saint-Martin, a fall morning whiled away sur la terrasse avec un café , twinkling holiday markets in the winter—it all sounds so fabulous that one single trip can’t cover it all. But if you’re someone who strategizes around attending (or avoiding) big events in the French capital, or would like to cash in on prime deals for hotels and flights, there is of course a slight science to it all.
To get some expert advice on the best time to visit Paris, I spoke to two of Condé Nast Traveler ’s Top Travel Specialists : Nick Cunningham, the destination manager for Europe at Scott Dunn; and Camilla Davidson, the head of destination management for France at Red Savannah. Both offered tips about the city’s cultural calendar, the must-see sights, and other insider tips that will make your Paris experience—much like Audrey Hepburn’s in Sabrina —one to write home about.
Paris in the spring remains one of the best times to visit for temperate weather and fewer tourists.
The best times to visit Paris are the months that shoulder the summer season: April, early May, September, and early October. “The days are still warm and balmy but without the sweltering heat of peak summertime,” says Davidson of Red Savannah. You’re more likely to avoid the crowds at this time too, when many of the families traveling with kids are back at work and school.
Cunningham of Scott Dunn agrees that avoiding the months of June, July, and August are a smart idea; temperatures all over Europe are rising , and the city heat and humidity of Paris can feel oppressive. September is his favorite time to visit the French capital, since you won’t need a coat: “Though, it is Paris. In case fall does come early, any excuse is better than none to don a fashionable coat and make the streets of Paris your very own runway.”
Peak season in Paris begins at the end of May with the Roland-Garros (a.k.a. the French Open) and runs through the summer, ending in the middle of September . Davidson notes that many Parisians also take their grands vacances in August, when they decamp to the beach or the mountains, so many small boutiques and restaurants close for the month. Also, this means August may feel more packed with tourists than usual because all the locals are away, and you may not get to experience all the insider Paris recs you got from your friends for things like hole-in-the-wall wine bars and must-visit thrift shops.
Don’t forget to keep an eye on the fashion world’s calendar, Cunningham cautions: “Despite the fantastic opportunities for spotting A-list celebrities , be warned that if you visit during fashion weeks, especially womenswear, it’s possible you will see higher prices everywhere during seemingly surprising times of the year in the fall and spring.” For what it’s worth: the women’s ready-to-wear shows—what most people call “Paris Fashion Week”—occur in late February or early March and late September or early October .
There are plenty of historic cafés in Paris like Les Deux Magots where you can while away the day.
Generally, the cheapest time to go to Paris is in the window from mid-November to mid-December, says Cunningham, “after the insanely busy summer tourist season, but before the holiday season , when prices leading just up to and after New Year’s skyrocket.” During this time, you avoid most of the major events on the annual calendar like fashion week, the French Open, and the like, giving you plenty of room at hotels and shorter lines at the main tourist attractions.
With the Olympics happening in France this year, the cheapest time to go to Paris in 2024 is after the summer, specifically October and November, according to Laura Lindsay, the global travel trends expert at Skyscanner, the search aggregator and travel agency. As for 2025, the beginning of the calendar is looking like a good time to book your flights, she says. January , February, and March have flights starting at $330 roundtrip from the United States to Paris.
For cheaper plane tickets to Paris, Lindsay recommends playing with your itinerary. Roundtrip flights from and to the most convenient airports are most desirable and often priced accordingly by airlines . “Sometimes it’s cheaper to fly out with one airline and back with another,” she says. “You can also look at flying in or out of one airport and back to or from another. This is especially handy for cities with multiple airports like Paris, London, and New York. It can take a bit of playing with the flight search, but it can result in finding great flight deals.”
Both Davidson and Cunningham suggest four to five days in Paris for the average first-time visit. Travelers can cover a handful of must-see sights in Paris, but an extra fifth day can offer some breathing room and time to enjoy the city at a more leisurely pace. This is Paris after all. Simply strolling through the streets for a bit of French flânerie will always yield some new-to-you discoveries, be it a café , a bakery, a boutique, or some small patch of green.

Crowds are a given at the Louvre, but time your arrival strategically for a calmer experience
Naturally, the Eiffel Tower , the Louvre , and the Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre are among the must-see tourist attractions in Paris, but be prepared for crowds to be there year-round. Try going early when you can; watching the sunrise at the foot of the Sacré-Cœur with a view overlooking the French capital is definitely worth the wake-up call and the hike up the hill. Additionally, the boat rides along the Seine are one of the tourist attractions that even Parisians can appreciate; Cunningham suggests going at golden hour, just as the city lights come to life at dusk, for a truly mesmerizing display of the City of Light.
As for more off-the-beaten-path experiences, Cunningham recommends a guided tour of the Palais Garnier , the most famous opera house in the city: “It’s a very brief visit that doesn’t take much time, but it delivers perhaps one of the most interesting tours you can do in the city.” Davidson also offers a useful strategy for seeing art and culture in the city: “Paris is so filled with museums, galleries, and art exhibitions that I always suggest visitors to pick just one gallery and focus on that, to avoid ‘museum fatigue’ and focus on a particular area of interest for you.”
Note that the Notre Dame Cathedral is due to reopen at the end of 2024 after extensive reconstruction and restoration in the wake of the devastating fire in the spring of 2019. It’s one of the most anticipated reopenings happening in the city this year, the other being that of the Grand Palais. Book tickets early, if you want to go, and be prepared to muscle through the crowds.
Always make sure to greet shop owners and staff when entering a store, a restaurant, a hotel—any building in Paris, really. “It’s considered rude to wait for them to greet you,” Cunningham explains. Bonjour and merci will get you far; you’ll find that just saying hello and thank you will make your experience in the city all the more pleasant.
Davison also suggests bringing comfortable walking shoes . Much of the city is walkable, and you’ll miss a lot of the beautiful city scenery if you’re just shuttling back and forth between tourist sites via the Metro or taxis. She also recommends visiting a museum on the first Sunday of the month, which is when many art institutions offer free admission. “It’s a great way to explore some of the lesser-known museums, with less commitment than an expensive ticketed admission.”

Paris has been capturing the hearts and minds of its visitors for centuries, and though great swathes of the city have moved with the times, the essence at its core remains unchanged: love. And we don’t mean love in the conventional sense – Paris is not a city that demands you explore as a couple, but rather in its passion: for art, for architecture, for literature, for shopping – the list goes on. This zest for life is woven into each part of this patchwork city, from the bustling boulevards to bijou back alleys, and it’s undeniably infectious. So infectious in fact, that the term “Paris is always a good idea” is one that seems to be perpetually floating around.
It will come as little surprise then, that the City of Lights – as it’s affectionately known – can become pretty crowded. And though there is something beguiling about each and every season here, it’s worth knowing when the best time to visit Paris is. Below, we’ve shared the lowdown on when to book your trip, depending on your top criteria. We predict it will be avoir le coup de foudre (love at first sight).
Paris isn’t known for being “cheap”, but it doesn’t necessarily need to blow the budget. If you’re after lower travel fares and better hotel rates, then early December , January and March are considered off-season here. Travelling during these months means you might be in for some pretty chilly climes (Paris temperatures can sink to just three degrees during January), but if you’re happy wrapping up and bracing the cold, then there are some budget-friendly deals.
Those able to travel midweek might also find sporadic deals available throughout the year across Eurostar and several of the airlines that fly to Paris, though a sweet spot for those wanting slightly warmer temperatures fall around mid-September - this is shoulder season, when schools are back in session, but the weather hasn’t quite dipped yet.

The busiest time to visit Paris is across the spring and summer. In the spring, the flamboyant blooms in the famed jardins are a big draw, Easter events are in full swing (head to Gothic Saint-Chapelle to listen to a medley of Mozart, Bach and Handel set against the chapel’s 600-square-metre stained glass windows), and these balmy months give way to long, lethargic summer days, where al-fresco dining and late evening ice cream trips are a must. None of these things are a secret though, and so the city fills up with visitors looking to make the most of the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Summer then bursts onto the scene, bringing with it a plethora of outdoor events and festivals, from the French Open in June to the famed Nuit des Musées, a yearly one-night event that invites visitors to check out the veritable smorgasbord of Parisian museums late into the evening, and so too the crowds follow.
If you’re travelling during these times, make sure to set a loose itinerary ahead of your trip, as many of the main attractions will need to be booked ahead of time.
Unlike its fervour for life, Paris’ weather is pretty temperate. The summers rarely see searing temperatures, and the winters never fall below freezing. That being said, April through August sees the city enjoy its highest temperatures (averaging mid-20s), though in recent years, the later summer months have seen highs of 40 degrees Celsius. Mainly, though, the capital can be relied upon for a balmy stretch of predictably pleasant weather throughout this five-month period.
Bastille Day references a revolutionary attempt in the 1700s to storm and seize control of the medieval armoury, fortress and political prison known as the Bastille. Because of this, on 14 July each year, the city celebrates an official holiday, during which a mix of military parades, dancing, and fireworks around the Eiffel Tower come to life across the streets. Unsurprisingly, travel and hotel fares are high around this time, but the jubilant atmosphere enjoyed by those who do choose to visit Paris during this time is second-to-none.
Paris oozes style, and so do its residents; Parisians are known across the world for their chic approach to fashion and their epitomising of "French Girl Style" However, the capital is never more en-vogue than when Paris Fashion Week comes to town, with two editions of womenswear (Spring/Summer in September and Autumn/Winter in March) and two editions of menswear (Autumn/Winter in January and Spring/Summer in June). Expect to see the fashion stakes, and the prices raised during these weeks, and double-check that the landmarks and foodie hotspots you’ve been planning to visit aren’t closed for some impossibly cool party to celebrate the occasion.
The government in Paris is spending an estimated $9.7 billion on preparation for the Games, with hopes for 15 million visitors between late July and early September.
Airfares tracked by digital booking site Hopper show flights to Paris from the U.S. during the weekend of the opening ceremony averaging about $877 per ticket.
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are set to see plenty of attendees — but travel data shows there are still opportunities for last-minute deal-hunters to capitalize on current market dynamics.
Roughly a month out from the Friday, July 26, torch-lighting ceremony that will kick off the games, more than 75% of Paris-area rooms tracked by analytics firm CoStar have been booked over the Games’ opening weekend. That compares with approximately 42% occupancy over the same weekend in 2023.
“Three out of four rooms is certainly a healthy performance,” said Jan Freitag, national director for hospitality market analytics at CoStar.
Freitag said occupancy would likely only increase as the Games approach, especially as people — primarily those in Europe who can make the trip by car or train — decide at the last minute that they want to attend. There hasn’t been a Summer Olympics played on the European continent since the Athens Games in 2004.
Unprecedented security and cleanup efforts have been undertaken, including a plan to prep the Seine river for competition — an effort highlighted by President Emmanuel Macron personally with a promise to take a dip in the water.
But nothing is guaranteed, and some would-be visitors to the City of Lights might be just as inclined to forgo the trip to avoid crowds, Freitag said.
“It’s a very, very special event — but it will be interesting to see how this number pans out compared to other Augusts in prior years,” he said. “There are always people who are staying away from these events too.”
Other travel sites showed a plethora of hotel deals still available — with at least one 3-star hotel in the heart of Paris showing 50% off usual rates for high summer, according to Google.
That is down 27% compared with the same period last year — but Hopper economist Hayley Berg said that largely reflects a step-down from the sky-high prices seen during the post-pandemic “revenge travel” surge that continued into 2023, along with greater seating capacity being offered by air carriers.
“This rebalancing of supply and demand, combined with the outliers of 2023 prices, mean that airfare this summer to Paris costs less than last year, even with the Olympics ahead,” Berg wrote in a statement.
“We expect that as Olympic trials complete and the Games grow closer, prices will surge as flights begin to sell out on specific travel dates,” Berg added.
In fact, bookings on the Hopper app for trips to Paris around the Olympic Games dates have doubled compared with last year at this time.
A French tourism minister recently said international flight arrivals to Paris were already up 24% for the period covering the Summer Games.
U.S. airfares in May were down 16% from last year, according to the latest reading from the c onsumer p rice i ndex — and overall, fares have returned to prepandemic levels.
But for would-be travelers with middle to lower incomes, Freitag said, a trip to Paris this summer is likely out of the question.
“The headline is bifurcation,” he said. “For the very high and high end, there’s still a lot of interest and money for high-end leisure and staying in upscale accommodations.”
But households making less than $75,000 annually or so “are feeling the pinch of higher inflation rates,” Freitag said. While the inflation rate has come down significantly from its peak in the summer of 2022 , it still hovers just above the Federal Reserve’s desired 2% mark.
“In the basket of things that you have to buy versus want to buy, have-to-buy items like car insurance are now so much more expensive versus want-to-buy like weekend trips,” he said. “So we are seeing a deceleration of that demand, especially for midscale-type properties.”
French officials have cautioned that while the boost from tourism should be substantial — more than $1 billion using the most conservative assumptions — it could take a year or longer to tabulate the true impact.
And historically, the ultimate economic effect for Olympic host cities has been mixed. A Council on Foreign Relations report note s that while the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona are often cited as a tourism success story, there has been roughly an even split between cities that have seen some payoff from hosting the Olympics and those that haven’t.

Whether you're a history buff, art lover, wine enthusiast, foodie, architecture aficionado or just someone who needs a break from busy Paris during the Olympics, these day trips offer a variety of experiences for francophiles and first-timers alike.
P arisians looking to pocket a fortune by renting out their apartments to tourists visiting the French capital for the Olympics have been left disappointed as prices crash close to the start of the Games.
With a month to go before the opening ceremony, many say they have been forced to dramatically lower their prices to attract renters, while others have given up altogether.
After listing her flat on the short-term letting website Airbnb, 28-year-old real estate worker Giulia "could already picture the bundles of cash we could go on holiday with."
But the lucrative booking she dreamt never materialised.
In January, Giulia was asking for an "exorbitant" 550 euros ($588) a night to rent her place in the working-class 18th district of northern Paris.
"After that, it went down to 350, then 250, and still nobody," she told AFP.
It was only when she dropped the price to 160 euros -- just 30 euros above the normal rate for the July and August -- that a reservation came through from an American who booked her apartment for a fortnight.
While not as much as she had hoped for, "it'll allow us to have a good holiday", she said.
Advertising executive Adrien Coucaud was not so lucky.
He decided to entrust his eastern Paris flat where he lives by himself to a concierge service, so it could welcome tourists while he went on holiday.
But that experience -- which he admits was motivated by greed -- quickly soured.
The concierge service set the prices far too high to attract bookings between July 26 and August 11, when the Olympics will be in full swing.
When he tried to contact the concierge service, no one answered.
Even after he took back control of the listing and lowered the price to 166 euros a night, he was unable to find any takers.
"At that point I put an end to this endeavour," Coucaud confided, adding that he was "disgusted" by the experience.
- No golden egg goose -
The failure of rental prices to match Parisian dreams is likely down to many of the French capital's residents having the same idea at the same time.
While they did rise significantly at the beginning of the year, they have since dropped back -- to no surprise from the Parisian authorities.
"We kind of saw it coming," Barbara Gomes, who is in charge of regulating furnished tourist accommodation in the capital, told AFP.
"There was inflation at first, with a lot of fantasies about the rental prices that could be charged during the Games," the Communist Party politician said.
But that was followed by a drop she attributes to the wave of Parisians renting out their vacant accommodation while on holiday, coupled with an abundance of hotel rooms.
The councillor added that she was being "careful" to ensure compliance with Parisian regulations, which make it very difficult to rent out accommodation that is not a principal residence.
While short-term rentals are highly regulated in France, that has not deterred Parisians from trying to cash in.
"As expected, the increase in the supply available during the Games is regulating prices," Airbnb told AFP, while declining to reveal any details.
Despite this, the US-based tourism rental giant said that "Paris 2024 is on track to become the biggest event in Airbnb's history".
"Overnight stays booked in the first quarter for stays during the Games period were more than five times higher than they were in the Paris region during the same period the previous year," it added.
But for many Parisians, the problem is that "out of 15 million tourists 13 million are French", said Raphael Lorin, the chairman of luxury tourist rental group specialist Archides.
He pointed out that French people attending the Olympic Games are more likely to stay with friends and family.
"On the other hand, foreigners can be people with very big budgets who are customers of the very top-of-the-range hotels," Lorin added.
"For everything that's at the lower or middle end of the market, there is no goose that lays the golden egg."
NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
‘No sleep, bus, club, another club, another club.’
Anyone who has ever been on TikTok will know they’re the words of Lady Gaga, in an audio clip that has been stitched, shared and liked across the platform.
And, after a weekend in Paris for Fête de la Musique (which translates to World Music Day), I feel like I can now relate to the songstress.
I had no idea what to expect from the festival as I hoped on the 7am Eurostar to Gare du Nord from St Pancras International last week.
Friends who have been to Fête de la Musique compared it to Notting Hill Carnival in London – both music based events that take over the city streets.
However, this French party is much bigger, dominating the entire city – and in fact, much of the country.
I’ve been to Paris multiple times in the past, but never for the festival, so I went to check it out.
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video
The celebration is held every year on summer solstice, June 21, and takes place all over France.
While Notting Hill Carnival is rooted in Caribbean traditions, celebrating heritage and contributions of the Afro-Caribbean community, Fête de la Musique focuses on the music culture in France.
Set up by the then minister of culture, it was first celebrated in Paris in 1982 with the goal of bringing people together through music.
Ever since, the festival has become an international phenomenon, marked on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries.
As I come to witness, tens of thousands of people pour onto the streets of Paris – many in club wear, others still in suits after coming straight from work.
Celebrations in some areas of the city begin as early as 10am, continuing until the sun rises almost 24 hours later.
Famous landmarks, like Basilique du Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre, boulevards, parks and public spaces are transformed into open-air stages for musicians – and there is something for everyone.
From jazz gigs by the Seine to classical performances in historic cathedrals, there is an experience for both locals and tourists, creating an atmosphere of unity and joy.
All concerts are free to the public, though sometimes ticketed, and all performers donate their time free of charge.
While there are many random buskers to entertain the crowds, household names like Yamê, Matt Pokora and Fally Ipupa took over the stages.
International DJ Stephy Diab also made an appearance right outside a well-known Lebanese restaurant.
Despite how popular Fête de la Musique is among Parisians though, it’s notparticularly publicised to tourists, making it harder to track down the best parties – so I draft in some experts.
I have recruited my friends Ahmed and Thea, my favourite Parisian couple, to be my tour guides for Fête de la Musique. I have no idea what to expect, so I’m entirely at their mercy.
While I wait for them to finish work, I join the Grailed x Boiler Room pop-up at 23 rue du Sentier near Strasbourg Saint-Denis metro station.
The London-based club promoter curates DJ sets for the celebration every year, bringing in a trendy, young crowd.
But the whole point of the day is to party outside – if the weather allows it. Ahmed and Thea finally pick me up and we catch up over a few cocktails at Paolina Bar, a few streets over from the Boiler Room pop-up.
Strolling past streets lined with dancing crowds, we then set off to Le Syndicat, a 15-minute walk from Paolina Bar. The crowds start to grow bigger and louder as we approach.
Le Syndicat is a nondescript Parisian speakeasy, which is a regular on The World’s 50 Best Bars list.
DJs have set up their decks and speakers outside, filling the air with beats – a mix of electronic, hip-hop and anything in between.
Bartenders – normally serving a wicked mix of cocktails in specialised glasses – are now pouring alcohol without measuring, straight into takeaway cups.
I am just one espresso martini down, but there is no time to dawdle. Next on the list is Sürpriz Kebab – yes, a kebab shop – just a few minutes away.
There is another DJ set just outside this legendary institution, apparently known for throwing one of the best parties during Fête de la Musique.
Cocktails are just a few euros, sold next to the DJ booth on the street. Instead of cheap, low-quality drinks, the bartender takes his time and makes me a strong Moscow Mule that keeps me going for awhile.
People are dancing on the street. Some are tucking into greasy chips and meat. Everyone is super friendly.
It is as spontaneous as I had imagined. I swiftly lose track of time and by sunset, we are on our way to Canal Saint-Martin. It is a 20-minute walk from Sürpriz, but the crowds make the journey much longer.
We arrive at the banks of the Seine, which are jampacked full of people. Music is being blasted from all directions, and I can see a girl dancing on the roof of a car parked nearby.
It is chaotic in the best way. Every bar and restaurant has its own gig; there is a DJ playing house, but I can also hear a crowd chanting Gloria Gaynor’s I will survive – but the football version.
Wine and beer are free-flowing. There are little hot dog stands and pop-up bars dotted down the banks, and my oh my, the queues are long.
I can overhear people who did not know each other until a few minutes ago now chatting about the Paris Olympic Games, and then the casual culture of cheating in France.
We stay at Canal Saint-Martin for the rest of the night. Some people leave, others join, but it is just an opportunity to make more connections.
I learn that you have to make the very best of it as Fête de la Musique lasts just one night.
I dance until my feet hurt. That’s a pair of Mary Janes gone, but it is all worth it. I get home at 3.30am. I fear my poor Uber driver had to put up with my snoring in the back seat of the car. C’est la vie .
No trip to Paris – no matter how short it is – is complete until one dips their toes into the bygone era of the city. This time it was Moulin Rouge.
Do not be confused, the show in on Boulevard de Clichy, Pigalle, is very different to Baz Luhrmann’s production.
It is the city’s most famous cabaret and by just entering the landmark building, I can understand why. There is another world of opulence and grandeur inside. It is all adorned with plush red velvet, glittering chandeliers, and intricate gold accents.
Champagne is served within seconds of me sitting down.
Though the nature of the performances are a little too old-school for me, there is certainly an appetite for them in the room. The dancers are outstanding and the choreography intricate. I can’t take my eyes off of the bedazzled costumes.
The acrobatic acts add a dynamic layer to the spectacle, and they are my favourite part of the show.
Tickets for the Moulin Rouge start from €88 per person.
I cannot leave Paris without a visit to Boulangerie Utopie, which makes the official best baguettefor 2024.
Named the top bakery in France in 2016 by M6 TV channel, it then emerged as a champion at Grand Prix de la Baguette de Tradition Française de la Ville De Paris.
The competition honours the mastery behind the quintessential French baguette.
Xavier Netry, the talented baker behind Utopie, was crowned champion in April and was awarded 4,000 euros and the opportunity to supply baguettes president Emmanuel Macron for an entire year.
There are a few issues at play here: I am hungover, it is raining, the queue is long. But I am dedicated.
When I finally get inside, I order three (one simply has to bring the best baguette to London) and tuck in.
It is soft and light, almost sourdough like, with a crunchy coating. While I wish I have some butter and salt flakes to spread on top, I am the happiest girl alive.
It is indeed an outstanding baguette.
There have never been more options of where to stay in the city, considering the sports fever ahead of the Olympics and Paralympic Games.
Every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to be renting their home, room or even a couch amid the flow of tourists taking over the capital.
Hotels can be expensive. And I much prefer to feel at home whenever I travel to a destination I have been to in the past, so I opt out for an Airbnb apartment with a living room and a kitchen.
I ended up choosing a charming little property on the sixth floor of a residential building situated a few minutes away from the Moulin Rouge and a 15-minute walk to the Montmartre Hill. An absolute gem.
It is one of Airbnb’s Guest Favourite listings, a highlight badge that ensures the top quality of a property.
My host Selma speaks Arabic, English, French and Spanish, and is super quick with replying to any of my queries. She also allows me to check in three hours earlier, a mark of an excellent host.

Her home has a 4.8 rating – and may I just say this one thing – it has one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in in a long time. A gold star for Selma.
Gergana was a guest of Airbnb in Paris. She stayed for two nights at one of the Guest Favourite Listings, which cost €477.
Eurostar tickets from London to Paris start from £39.
