44 Magical Quotes About Paris to Inspire Your Trip

Of all the cities in all the world, there’s none that have captured the imagination of several centuries worth of the world’s top writers, philosophers, and artists of all kinds than Paris–and as a result, the number of gorgeous quotes about Paris floating around in the universe is truly impressive.

We absolutely adore Paris. Several visits later, we’ve accepted that we’ll forever end each visit even more enamored with the City of Lights (and yes, some of Paris’ many nicknames did come from sayings about the city!)  than we were before arriving.

So many of these Paris quotes ring true to our experiences with the city, and as a result, they’ve become some of our favorites.

Some I heard long before we first meandered, jetlagged and infatuated, through Paris for the first time ourselves. Some I only heard years later. And honestly, as long as I continue to read about and visit Paris, I’m sure my list of favorite quotes about Paris will continue to grow as well.

Here are some of the most inspiring Paris quotes around, pulled from everything from books about Paris to quips by movie stars. Reading these, I can’t help but dream about packing my bags for the city again.

“Paris is the city in which one loves to live. Sometimes I think this is because it is the only city in the world where you can step out of a railway station—the Gare D’Orsay—and see, simultaneously, the chief enchantments: the Seine with its bridges and bookstalls, the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Tuileries Gardens, the Place de la Concorde, the beginning of the Champs Elysees—nearly everything except the Luxembourg Gardens and the Palais Royal. And finally, the longest of all these quotes about Paris, pulled from Interview With a Vampire –I still remember reading these words for the first time in high school, long before I would set foot in Paris but years after I started dreaming of traveling there:

“Paris was a universe whole and entire unto herself, hollowed and fashioned by history; so she seemed in this age of Napoleon III with her towering buildings, her massive cathedrals, her grand boulevards, and ancient winding medieval streets–as vast and indestructible as nature itself.

All was embraced by her, by her volatile and enchanted populace thronging the galleries, the theaters, the cafes, giving birth over and over to genius and sanctity, philosophy and war, frivolity and the finest art; so it seemed that if all the world outside her were to sink into darkness, what was fine, what was beautiful, what was essential might there still come to its finest flower.

Even the majestic trees that graced and sheltered her streets were attuned to her–and the waters of the Seine, contained and beautiful as they wound through her heart; so that the earth on that spot, so shaped by blood and consciousness, had ceased to be the earth and had become Paris.” — Anne Rice

The pompous lavishness of the grand boulevards and expensive storefronts, but also the unmissable poverty visible on every corner.

The longest quote about Paris is beautifully spot on:

• “ Paris was a universe whole and entire unto herself, hollowed and fashioned by history; so she seemed in this age of Napoleon III with her towering buildings, her massive cathedrals, her grand boulevards, and ancient winding medieval streets–as vast and indestructible as nature itself.

Even the majestic trees that graced and sheltered her streets were attuned to her–and the waters of the Seine, contained and beautiful as they wound through her heart; so that the earth on that spot, so shaped by blood and consciousness, had ceased to be the earth and had become Paris.” — Anne Rice, Interview with a Vampire

The most beautiful city in the world is my city, yeepeeee!” ~ Christian Louboutin “It’s like watching Paris from an express caboose heading in the opposite direction – every second the city gets smaller and smaller, only you feel it’s really you getting smaller and smaller and lonelier and lonelier, rushing away from all those lights and that excitement at about a million miles an hour.” ~ Sylvia Plath

Fluctuat Nec Mergitur: Paris' Resilient Motto

Tour eiffel.

Paris’ Latin motto, Fluctuat nec mergitur , has a history nearly as old as the city itself. Seen on the walls of official city buildings and metro stations, the meaning of the phrase was not widely understood until the terrorist attacks of late 2015 saw a resurgence in the use of the phrase, as Parisians began using it in messages of defiance for their attackers.

paris tourism slogan

Every city needs a slogan. For Paris, with its ancient Roman history, the motto is the Latin Fluctuat nec mergitur , meaning ‘ Tossed but not sunk ,’ or ‘ Beaten by the waves, but does not founder .’ Originally used by the Seine boatman’s corporation (les ‘Marchands de l’eau’), this phrase may have been around since before the year 310 . The motto is most commonly found on Paris’ coat of arms, accompanied by a motif of a ship bouncing on a stormy sea.

This motif has been unchanged since 1358 . It was the symbol of the aforementioned boatman’s corporation, which served as the most important unified body in Paris before it was even a city. This brotherhood of boatmen formed back when Paris was merely a tribe (called the Parisii), who lived on the Île de la Cité, where Notre Dame is now. This tribe relied on the waterways, and thus the boatman’s corporation was of particular consequence.

According to the Mairie of the 1st Arrondissement (the Town Hall), the phrase reflects the incredible history of flooding on the river Seine. Sizable floods have been recorded as far back as 358/359 (by Julius Caesar, no less), and major floods also occurred in the years 582 and 1658. The most significant recent flood (of which we have photos) was in 1910, when the Seine was rendered utterly impassible:

In 1853, Baron Haussmann , the Prefect of the Seine, oversaw a grand renovation of the city of Paris. As part of the project, he adopted Fluctuat nec mergitur as the motto of Paris by official decree.

Façade pavoisée de l’Hôtel de ville de Paris.

Today, the coat of arms (along with the motto) can be seen all over Paris. It adorns public buildings, metros, and street signs, likely in places you visit all the time. You’ve probably never noticed it.

paris tourism slogan

Curiously, the phrase has also become a part of the French vernacular, thanks to a novelty song from the 1960s. Georges Brassens’ ‘ Les Copains d’abord’ was written in 1964 for the film Les Copains and contains the line ‘ Ses fluctuat nec mergitur; C’était pas d’la littérature’ :

A very helpful English translation (with notes) is available here , for those that are interested. The song is very popular in France , and many French people have long known the phrase Fluctuat nec mergitur without even recognizing it as the motto of Paris. That may have changed in late 2015.

Fluctuat nec mergitur by the Canal /

Following the terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015, the motto began appearing on walls around Paris. In huge block letters, ‘Fluctuat Nec Mergitur’ appeared in graffiti form in Place de la République , and along the Canal St Martin. The scale of the pieces sent a clear message of defiance and solidarity, with Le Monde calling the motto the ‘ slogan of resistance ‘.

Parisians also took to social media to show their solidarity. This Instagram post by designer Joann Sfar loosely translates to ‘this says ‘screw you’ to death,’ – although in less diplomatic terms:

paris tourism slogan

In the ultimate show of solidarity, the words and motif were superimposed over the French flag ( Le Tricolore ), and projected on the Eiffel Tower, in the days following the November 13 attacks:

Tour Eiffel /

This combination of the two most potent symbols of French nationhood (the flag and the tower) with the city’s own symbol of ‘Paris-ness,’ was shown on televisions and social media all over the world. The phrase has come to realize a new meaning for those Parisians who defy their attackers: while the ship is now merely a metaphor, the spirits of the people in Paris will never founder.

2 Days in PARIS! Restaurants, Attractions, and More!

Not ready to book a tour? See if Paris tours are worth it .

1. Bonjour (Hello)

Pronunciation: bahn-joor

This might seem obvious because even people who don’t speak French often know what Bonjour means. However, what most non-French speakers don’t know is how important saying bonjour actually is. If you approach French people without saying bonjour first, they may take offense.

For example, if you need to ask for directions, it is not enough to say “Excuse me, do you know….” A native French speaker will find this rude. Instead, make sure to say “Bonjour! Excuse me, do you know…”

It’s a small touch that makes a huge difference. It’s also important to say bonjour whenever you walk into any shop or restaurant. If you only have time to learn one French word before your trip, make sure it’s this one.

2. Merci beaucoup (Thank you very much)

Pronunciation: mehr-see boh-koo

No matter where you travel in the world, being polite should always be at the top of your list. Saying merci beaucoup (thank you very much) is a small way to show a local that you’re enjoying your time in France and that you took the time to learn some French words.

3. Excusez-moi (Excuse me)

Pronunciation: ex-koo-say mwa

Whether you’re in a crowded museum, on the metro, or in a restaurant, there’s a high possibility you’ll need to squeeze past someone, for example. Excusez-moi will come in handy and being polite will always get you further than not.

4. Au revoir! (Goodbye!)

Pronunciation: oh-rev-vwha

You know how to say hello, so it makes to know how to say goodbye! On your trip to Paris, you’ll meet new people and it helps to be able to say the basic greetings

5. Parlez-vous Anglais? (Do you speak English?)

Pronunciation:  par-lay-voo awn-glay

If you have limited French, odds are you’ll have to try speaking with locals in English at some point. To show you’ve put in a little effort, try starting the conversation with one of the most helpful French phrases: parlez-vous anglais ? Then, continue in English.

In Paris, most people working in restaurants and tourist locations usually speak English. However, this might not always be the case, especially if you travel to a smaller city outside of Paris. This is why it’s important to have a few French words up your sleeve, just in case.

6. Je voudrais… (I would like…)

Pronunciation: juh voo-dray (Pronounce the “J” sounds like you would the “S” in vision)

Ordering at a French restaurant doesn’t have to be hard. If you want to give it a go, just remember the words je voudrais . That’s how you start your order followed by the food or drink off the menu. It’s as simple as that! These two words can also be used in other situations, such as at a metro station to purchase train tickets from a vendor or anything else “you would like.”

7. L’addition, s’il vous plaît (Check, please)

Pronunciation: lih-ah-dih-see-ohn, sih-voo-play

You might imagine France as a place where you can sit at a café and eat, drink, and chat for hours on end. Well, you pretty much can! In France, a waiter will most likely not bring the check to your table at the end of your meal because you can sit at your table for hours until the restaurant closes.

Waiters won’t try to push you out or throw dirty looks your way. When you’re ready to pay and head out, say: l’addition, s’il vous plaît , which means “check, please.” Otherwise, you could be waiting at your table for a while.

8. Où est…? (Where is…?)

Pronunciation: oo-eh

These two simple words will help you out most with directions. Où est means “where is” in French, and you can combine this phrase with many words while traveling. For example, to ask where the nearest metro station is located, you can say: Où est le métro? Or, if you’re headed to a specific attraction, add the name after this phrase. Où est le Louvre?

9. Combien ça coûte? (How much does that cost?)

Pronunciation:  Kohm-bee-ahn sah koot

It’s a given that on your trip to France, you’ll be doing some shopping. So, when you want to know how much something costs, ask: “Combien ça coûte?” In France, the amount on the price tag is the amount you’ll pay, since by law, the tax is included in the posted price. One exception to this might be your hotel room, where a small local tax is sometimes added.

Pro Tip: Negotiating prices is not a common practice in France, so if you don’t agree with a price, it’s best to move along and shop elsewhere.

10. Je le prendrai! (I’ll take it!)

Pronunciation: zhe le prawn-dray

This last one in our French phrases for travelers isn’t strictly necessary, but it’ll be a nice touch when interacting with a local while shopping. If you’re happy with the price, say Je le prendrai and get ready to pay. Shopping in hand, go and enjoy Paris some more!

13 French Phrases You Need to Know When Visiting Paris

paris tourism slogan

Coucou everyone! Today I want to talk about the 13 key French phrases you should know if you plan on visiting Paris,  and how to pronounce them.

I love France and I want every single American who visits this beautiful country to have a positive experience. While I strongly disagree with the stereotype that the French dislike Americans, I will admit that a guaranteed way to make a bad impression when visiting France (or any country) is by not making an effort to learn the language.

No one is expecting you to say everything perfectly, but showing you’re willing to try goes a long way in their books!

To get you started, here are 13 French phrases that will help you communicate in France. I have included pronunciations for each below but I want to include a disclaimer: My French is not perfect and I know this.

My goal is not to pretend to be a French teacher, but rather to be an internet friend who can help you get by while visiting Paris. ☺

So, allons-y!

Which means: Hello!

Bonjour literally translates to “Good Day” so while you can use it as your standard greeting, it’s best suited in the day time.

This is probably the most known French word among Americans but unfortunately it’s also one of the most mispronounced. You don’t want to say “bawn-jOR”, unless you want every French person within a 10 foot radius to cringe.

Here is a clip of me demonstrating the wrong ways to pronounce  bonjour , and then I’ll show you how to say it the correct way. ☺

Bonne Journée

Which means: Have a good day.

You should say this when leaving a place in the daytime, just like you would say “have a good day” in English.

Here’s how to pronounce it correctly:

Which means: Good Bye

Which means: Good Evening

Bonsoir is like the night version of Bonjour. You will use it in the exact same circumstances as you would Bonjour, except only when it’s the evening.

Here’s how to pronounce it:

Bonne soirée

Just like bonne journée means “have a good day” and is used when exiting, bonne soirée means “have a good evening” and is used in the same fashion.

Here is how to pronounce it:

Note: For some reason a lot of non-French speakers will say “bonne nuit” in this situation, which is incorrect. You would never say bonne nuit when leaving a shop or restaurant because it means “goodnight,” as in you are going to sleep.

You would instead say bon soirée.

Which of course means: Thank You.

Everyone knows  merci , but few people pronounce it correctly.

I’m sorry dear friends and family, I love you all so much, but most of you absolutely butcher the word  merci.  But I am here to help!

You don’t want to say “mercy”, like Lord have mercy.  And you also don’t want to say MARE-ci, like the beginning of the word Mary + see.

I realize this word can be tough because the French R is nearly impossible for non-French speakers, but you can get close enough just be switching your pronunciation a bit.

Here is me showing the wrong ways to pronounce  merci,  and the correct way.

This is word is especially important to learn if you’re visiting Paris:  Pardon is what you say when you bump into someone on accident.

It’s used in the same way we would say  sorry or  oops when navigating in public.

The pronunciation of  pardon  is quite different from the English pardon, so make sure to give this clip a quick listen so you can hear the difference.

Note: For some reason, many visitors will say “excusez-moi” instead of pardon which technically works but isn’t how the French do it.

Saying “excusez-moi” can have a more formal/harsh connotation behind it, and I know that’s not how you want to come off when apologizing for bumping into someone!

(Of course if you’re trying to squeeze past someone or are tapping someone on the shoulder, “excusez-moi” works perfectly in those scenarios).

S’il vous plait

I know you know what this one means… Please!

The French take manners very seriously, so feel free to use  s’il vous plait  sincerely and often.

When asking for help or directions, ordering food, or speaking to literally anyone, open your request with s’il vous plait and I guarantee you will have a better experience in France.

Here’s the wrong way to pronounce  s’il vous plait , and the correct:

DÉSOLÉ, JE PARLE PAS FRANÇAIS!

Here’s an important one you will definitely want to know: Sorry, I don’t speak French!

If you find yourself in a tough spot, there is no shame in saying “hey man, I know I pronounced  bonjour like a professional Parisienne, but I actually have no idea how to speak French!”☺ In fact, they will respect you for admitting it and will probably be pumped to practice their English.

Note: You will notice I left out the “ne” before parle, which is not the correct formation of this sentence. This is because it is very common in conversational French to drop the “ne”…and I’m operating under the assumption that you still want to  sound  super French, even when admitting you can’t speak the language. *wink*

C’EST GENTIL

Which means: That’s Nice, or That’s Very Nice of You.

I’m including this one because I didn’t know how to express this sentiment until I arrived in Paris, and now I use it all the time.

C’est gentil  is used when a stranger does something small but kind for you, like give up their seat on the train for you, or pick up something that you dropped.

*Note: you don’t pronounce the L

L’addition, S’Il vous plait

Which means: The check, please!

PS. While on the topic of dining I want to make a quick side note: Never, ever, ever, ever, EVER say “garçon” in a restaurant in France. It is one of the most insulting things you can say. Thanks ☺

Je prends un verre de vin

Last but not least, a phrase you will definitely need to know: How To Order Wine!

There’s two ways to order a glass of wine in French and I will teach you both. It’s a matter of preference and what you’re comfortable with saying because both work just fine.

  • Je prends un verre de vin, which literally translates to “I will take a glass of wine.”
  • Je voudrais un verre de vin, which translates to “I would like a glass of wine.”

Of course you would replace the word “vin” with the name of the wine you’re ordering, but I don’t need to tell you that.

Here’s how to pronounce both:

And there you have it! The 13 French Phrases that will help you walk around Paris like a true Parisienne.

What are some key phrases everyone should know in  your  country?

Tourism Slogans for Every Country in the World: From Catchy to Cringeworthy

You guys — I have gone down a rabbit hole. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I started searching for country tourism slogans to include on a Country Quick Facts Infographic I am creating for my newly-designed country category pages (check out the test run for Colombia here !).

Before I knew it, I had compiled a comprehensive list of the tourism slogans for every country and territory in the world! So I decided to rank the Top 20 Best and Worst tourism slogans just for kicks. And I also threw in a few tourism logos while I was at it!

It was interesting to see what catchy (or not-so-catchy) taglines countries have come up with to lure tourists, especially since (at the time of this writing) US citizens are banned from all but a handful of these countries due to the coronavirus.

Some countries opted for the easy go-to of alliteration (“Brilliant Barbados”; “Beautiful Burundi”; “Pristine Paradise Palau”; “Timeless Tuvalu”) or assonance (“Epic Estonia”; “Incredible India”). Other countries got a little more creative (Djibouti: “Djibeauty”; Slovenia: “I feel sLOVEnia”; Ukraine: “It’s all about U”).

A few countries decided to make some bold claims (“Dominican Republic Has It All”; “All You Need Is Ecuador”; Honduras: “Everything Is Here”), while smaller, lesser-known countries opted to just tell you where they are located (Andorra: “The Pyrenean Country”; Bosnia & Herzegovina: “The Heart of SE Europe”).

Without further ado, here is my ranking (in alphabetical order) of the Top 20 Best and Worst Country Tourism Slogans. Let’s get the cringeworthy taglines out of the way first before moving onto the catchy ones….

The iconic posters of Paris 2024

The iconic posters for the Paris 2024 Games were revealed on 4 March 2024 at Musée d’Orsay. Designed to illustrate the Games which they represent, the posters are a tradition: since the Stockholm Games in 1912, every Organising Committee has highlighted its symbols through them.

The Paris 2024 posters were created in conjunction with French illustrator Ugo Gattoni. With their rich details, they are the dream-like portrayal of a stadium-city, echoing our slogan “Games Wide Open” and reflecting our project’s ambition: to bring sport into the city.

A STADIUM-CITY FOR “GAMES WIDE OPEN”

The Paris 2024 posters depict a fantasy city that also serves as a gigantic stadium, within which sit the capital’s monuments, symbols of France, various Paris 2024 competition venues and several different sports and key figures. This spectacular landscape invites spectators to dive in and discover an entire range of different details and miniature scenes that, combined, form a fascinating and extremely colourful whole.

TWO COMPLEMENTARY POSTERS

The Paris 2024 posters were created using a diptych design to bring together Olympism and Paralympism. For the first time in the history of the Summer Games, the Olympic and Paralympic posters were designed together: each one can work independently, while combining to form one seamless united image that tells the overall story of Paris 2024. By uniting in this way, they highlight and celebrate the shared ambition of Paris 2024 for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games: one emblem, one slogan, one Team France!

Various elements, symbols and values representing Paris 2024, Olympism and Paralympism are featured on the posters:

  • Symbols of the Games (Olympic rings, the Agitos, Stoke Mandeville, the Olympic motto, medals, etc.).

DRAWN BY UGO GATTONI

To meet the major challenge of representing the rich and varied features of the Paris 2024 project within a single piece, Paris 2024 called on artist Ugo Gattoni to visualise the enterprise through a spectacular image.

Ugo Gattoni is a French illustrator born in Paris in 1988. He is renowned worldwide for his style and various creations, which have enabled him to work with leading French luxury houses. His characteristic style is marked by fantasy, surrealism, and the profusion of details. His drawings feature giant elements alongside tiny ones, and spectators are invited to lose themselves in the many different micro-stories that they tell.

To create the posters, Gattoni first embraced the vision and universe of Paris 2024, enabling him to successfully illustrate the soul of these Games. Gattoni spent more than 2,000 hours across six months of intense work producing the designs.

ON SALE FROM 5 MARCH

An outstanding collectors’ piece, the Paris 2024 posters will be available in several formats from 5 March with prices starting at €20. They will initially be released for sale on the online store and in the seven Paris 2024 official stores , as well as in the store at Musée d’Orsay. Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

After falling by 75 percent in 2020, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. Domestic travel is expected to grow 3 percent annually and reach 19 billion lodging nights per year by 2030. 1 Unless otherwise noted, the source for all data and projections is Oxford Economics. Over the same time frame, international travel should likewise ramp up to its historical average of nine billion nights. Spending on travel is expected to follow a similar trajectory, with an estimated $8.6 trillion in traveler outlays in 2024, representing roughly 9 percent of this year’s global GDP.

About the authors

This article is a collaborative effort by Caroline Tufft , Margaux Constantin , Matteo Pacca , and Ryan Mann , with Ivan Gladstone and Jasperina de Vries, representing views from McKinsey’s Travel, Logistics & Infrastructure Practice.

There’s no doubt people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go? We developed a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030. For the purposes of this report, we have divided the world into four regions—the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa.

Our analysis identifies three major themes for industry stakeholders to consider:

  • The bulk of travel spending is close to home. Stakeholders should ensure they capture the full potential of domestic travel before shifting their focus to international travelers. And they should start with international travelers who visit nearby countries—as intraregional trips represent the largest travel segment after domestic trips.
  • Source markets are shifting. Although established source markets continue to anchor global travel, Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia are all becoming fast-growing sources of outbound tourism.
  • The destinations of the future may not be the ones you imagine. Alongside enduring favorites, places that weren’t on many tourists’ maps are finding clever ways to lure international travelers and establish themselves as desirable destinations.

The bulk of travel spending is close to home

International travel might feel more glamorous, but tourism players should not forget that domestic travel still represents the bulk of the market, accounting for 75 percent of global travel spending (Exhibit 1). Domestic travel recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic faster than international travel, as is typical coming out of downturns. And although there has been a recent boom in “revenge travel,” with travelers prioritizing international trips that were delayed by the pandemic, a return to prepandemic norms, in which domestic travel represents 70 percent of spending, is expected by 2030.

The United States is the world’s largest domestic travel market at $1 trillion in annual spending. Sixty-eight percent of all trips that start in the United States remain within its borders. Domestic demand has softened slightly, as American travelers return abroad. 2 Dawit Habtemariam, “Domestic U.S. tourism growth levels off as Americans head overseas,” Skift, August 18, 2023. But tourism players with the right offerings are still thriving: five national parks broke attendance records in 2023 (including Joshua Tree National Park, which capitalized on growing interest from stargazers indulging in “dark sky” tourism 3 Scott McConkey, “5 national parks set attendance records in 2023, and the reasons may surprise you,” Wealth of Geeks, April 16, 2024. ).

China’s $744 billion domestic travel market is currently the world’s second largest. Chinese travelers spent the pandemic learning to appreciate the diversity of experiences on offer within their own country. Even as borders open back up, Chinese travelers are staying close to home. And domestic destinations are benefiting: for example, Changchun (home to the Changchun Ice and Snow Festival) realized 160 percent year-on-year growth in visitors in 2023. 4 Shi Xiaoji, “Why don’t Chinese people like to travel abroad anymore? The global tourism industry has lost 900 billion yuan. What is the situation?,” NetEase, February 12, 2024. In 2024, domestic travel during Lunar New Year exceeded prepandemic levels by 19 percent.

China’s domestic travel market is expected to grow 12 percent annually and overtake the United States’ to become the world’s largest by 2030. Hotel construction reflects this expectation: 30 percent of the global hotel construction pipeline is currently concentrated in China. The pipeline is heavily skewed toward luxury properties, with more than twice as many luxury hotels under construction in China as in the United States.

India, currently the world’s sixth-largest domestic travel market by spending, is another thriving area for domestic travel. With the subcontinent’s growing middle class powering travel spending growth of roughly 9 percent per year, India’s domestic market could overtake Japan’s and Mexico’s to become the world’s fourth largest by 2030. Domestic air passenger traffic in India is projected to double by 2030, 5 Murali Krishnan, “Can India’s airports cope with rapid passenger growth?,” Deutsche Welle, February 7, 2024. boosted in part by a state-subsidized initiative that aims to connect underserved domestic airports. 6 “India is seeing a massive aviation boom,” Economist , November 23, 2023.

When travelers do go abroad, they often stay close to home (Exhibit 2).

Europe and Asia, in particular, demonstrate strong and growing intraregional travel markets.

Recognizing this general trend, stakeholders have been funneling investment toward regional tourism destinations. An Emirati wealth fund, for instance, has announced its intent to invest roughly $35 billion into established hospitality properties and development opportunities in Egypt. 7 Michael Gunn and Mirette Magdy, “UAE’s $35 billion Egypt deal marks Gulf powers’ buying spree,” Bloomberg, April 27, 2024.

Europe has long played host to a high share of intraregional travel. Seventy percent of its travelers’ international trips stay within the region. Europe’s most popular destinations for intraregional travelers are perennial warm-weather favorites—Spain (18 percent), Italy (10 percent), and France (8 percent)—with limited change to these preferences expected between now and 2030.

Despite longer travel distances between Asian countries, Asia’s intraregional travel market is beginning to resemble Europe’s. Intraregional travel currently accounts for about 60 percent of international trips in Asia—a share expected to climb to 64 percent by 2030. As in Europe in past decades, Asian intraregional travel is benefiting from diminishing visa barriers and the development of a low-cost, regional flight network.

Thailand is projected to enjoy continued, growing popularity with Asian travelers. Thailand waived visa requirements for Chinese tourists in 2023 and plans to do the same for Indian tourists starting in 2024. It has aggressively targeted the fast-growing Indian traveler segment, launching more than 50 marketing campaigns directed at Indians over the past decade. The investment may be paying off: Bangkok recently overtook Dubai as the most popular city destination for Indian tourists. 8 “Bangkok overtakes Dubai as top destination for Indians post visa relaxation, reveals Agoda,” PR Newswire, January 18, 2024.

A McKinsey ConsumerWise survey on consumer sentiment, conducted in February 2024, suggests that Chinese travelers are also exhibiting high interest in international travel, with 36 percent of survey respondents indicating that they intend to spend more on international travel in the next three months. 9 Daniel Zipser, “ China brief: Consumers are spending again (outside of China) ,” McKinsey, April 8, 2024. Much of this interest is directed toward regional destinations such as Southeast Asia and Japan, with interest in travel to Europe down from previous years. 10 Guang Chen, Zi Chen, Steve Saxon, and Jackey Yu, “ Outlook for China tourism 2023: Light at the end of the tunnel ,” McKinsey, May 9, 2023.

Given travelers’ preference for proximity, how can tourism stakeholders further capitalize on domestic and intraregional travel demand? Here are a few strategies:

  • Craft offerings that encourage domestic tourists to rediscover local gems. Destinations, hotels, and transportation providers can encourage domestic tourists to integrate lesser-known cultural landmarks into their trips to visit friends and relatives. In France, the upscale hotel chain Relais & Châteaux markets historic properties that lie far from classic tourist sights—such as Château Saint-Jean in rural Auvergne—as a welcome escape from the bustle of Paris. In Mexico, the Pueblos Mágicos program has successfully boosted domestic tourist visits to a set of “magical towns” that showcase Mexican heritage.
  • Fold one-off domestic destinations into fuller itineraries. Route 66 in the United States is a classic road trip pathway, which spurs visits to attractions all along the highway’s length. Tourism stakeholders can collaborate to create similar types of domestic itineraries around the world. For instance, Mexico has expanded on its Pueblos Mágicos concept by branding coordinated visits to multiple villages as “magical routes.” In France, local tourism boards and vineyards have collaborated to promote bucket list “wine routes” around the country.
  • Make crossing borders into neighboring countries seamless. Removing logistical barriers to travel can nudge tourists to upgrade a one-off trip to a single attraction into a bucket list journey across multiple, less-trodden destinations. In Africa, for example, Ethiopian Airlines is facilitating cross-border travel to major regional tourist sites through improved air connectivity. In Asia, Thailand has announced its intent to create a joint visa easing travel among Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Source markets are shifting

The United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, and France remain the world’s five largest sources of travelers, in that order. These countries collectively accounted for 38 percent of international travel spending in 2023 and are expected to remain the top five source markets through 2030. But interest in travel is blossoming in other parts of the world—causing a shift in the balance of outbound travel flows (Exhibit 3).

North Americans’ travel spending is projected to hold steady at roughly 3 percent annual growth. US consumers voice growing concerns about inflation, and the most cost-constrained traveler segments are reducing travel, which is affecting ultra-low-cost airlines and budget hotels. Most travelers, however, plan to continue traveling: McKinsey research suggests that American consumers rank international and domestic travel as their highest-priority areas for discretionary spending. Instead of canceling their trips, these consumers are adapting their behavior by traveling during off-peak periods or booking travel further in advance. Travel spending by Europeans paints a slightly rosier picture, with roughly 5 percent projected annual growth. Meanwhile, the projected 12 percent annual growth in Chinese travelers’ spending should anchor substantial increases in travel spending across Northeast Asia.

Alongside these enduring traveler segments, new groups of travelers are emerging. Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia are still comparatively small source markets, but they are developing fast-growing pools of first-time tourists (Exhibit 4).

India’s breakneck GDP growth of 6 percent year over year is bolstering a new generation of travelers, 11 Benjamin Laker, “India will grow to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027,” Forbes , February 23, 2024. resulting in a projected annual growth in travel spending of 9 percent between now and 2030. Indian air carriers and lodging companies are making substantial investments to meet projected demand. Budget airline IndiGo placed the largest aircraft order in commercial aviation history in 2023, when it pledged to buy 500 Airbus A320 planes 12 Anna Cooban, “Biggest plane deal in history: Airbus clinches massive order from India’s IndiGo,” CNN, June 19, 2023. ; that same week, Air India nearly equaled IndiGo’s order size with purchase agreements for 250 Airbus and 220 Boeing jets. IndiGo later added an order for 30 additional Airbus A350 planes, well suited to serving both domestic and international routes. 13 “Airbus confirms IndiGo's A350 aircraft order,” Economic Times , May 6, 2024. The Indian Hotels Company Limited is ramping up its hotel pipeline, aiming to open two new hotels per month in the near future. International players are not sitting on the sidelines: seven hotel chains are launching new brands in India in 2024, 14 Peden Doma Bhutia, “Indian Hotels expansion plans: 2 new brands launching, 2 hotels opening every month,” Skift, February 2, 2024. including Marriott’s first Moxy- and Tribute-branded hotels in India and entrants from Hilton’s Curio and Tapestry brands. 15 Forum Gandhi, “Check-in frenzy: International hotel giants unleash fresh brands in India’s booming hospitality landscape,” Hindu Businessline , February 13, 2024. Development focus has shifted away from major metropolises such as Mumbai and Delhi and toward fast-developing, smaller cities such as Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

Southeast Asian travel spending is projected to grow at roughly 7 percent per year. Pockets of particularly high growth exist in Cambodia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. To capitalize on this blossoming source market, neighboring countries are rolling out attractive visa arrangements: for example, China has agreed to reciprocal visa waivers for short-term travelers from Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. 16 Julienna Law, “China launches ‘visa-free era’ with Southeast Asia. Will travel retail boom?,” Jing Daily , January 30, 2024.

Travel spending by Eastern Europeans is expected to grow at 7 percent per year until 2030—two percentage points higher than spending by Western Europeans. Areas of especially high growth include the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland, where middle-class travelers are increasingly venturing farther afield. Major tourism players, including the TUI Group, have tapped into these new source markets by offering charter flights to warm-weather destinations such as Egypt. 17 Hildbrandt von Klaus, “TUI develops Czech Republic as a new source market,” FVW, December 22, 2023.

Although the number of travelers from these new source markets is growing, their purchasing power remains relatively limited. Compared with Western European travelers (who average $159 per night in total travel spending), South Asians spend 20 percent less, Eastern Europeans spend 40 percent less, and Southeast Asians spend 55 percent less. Only 3 percent of the current Asian hotel construction pipeline caters to economy travelers, suggesting a potential supply gap of rooms that could appeal to budget-constrained tourists.

While acknowledging that historical source markets will continue to constitute the bulk of travel spending, tourism players can consider actions such as these to capitalize on growing travel demand from newer markets:

  • Reduce obstacles to travel. Countries can look for ways to strategically invest in simplifying travel for visitors from growing source markets. In 2017, for example, Azerbaijan introduced express processing of electronic visas for Indian visitors; annual arrivals from India increased fivefold in two years. Requirements regarding passport photocopies or in-person check-ins can similarly be assessed with an eye toward reducing red tape for travelers.
  • Use culturally relevant marketing channels to reach new demographics. Unique, thoughtful marketing strategies can help destinations place themselves on first-time travelers’ bucket lists. For example, after the release of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , a popular Bollywood movie shot in Spain with support from the Spanish Ministry of Tourism, Indian tourism to Spain increased by 65 percent. 18 “ Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara part of syllabus in Spain colleges,” India Today , June 6, 2004.
  • Give new travelers the tech they expect. Travelers from newer source markets often have access to tech-forward travel offerings. For example, Indian travelers can travel anywhere within their country without physical identification, thanks to the Digi Yatra app. The Southeast Asian rideshare app Grab has several helpful travel features that competitors lack, such as automated menu translation and currency conversion. Tourism stakeholders should consider how to adapt to the tech expectations of newer travelers, integrating relevant offerings that ease journeys.
  • Create vibrant experiences tailored to different price points. Crafting lower-budget offerings for more cost-constrained travelers doesn’t need to result in giving them a subpar experience. Capsule hotels, in which guests sleep in small cubbies, began as a response to the high cost of accommodations in Japan, but they have become an attraction in their own right—appearing on many must-do lists. 19 Philip Tang, “24 of the best experiences in Japan,” Lonely Planet, March 23, 2024.

The places you’ll go: The destinations of the future may not be the ones you imagine

The world’s top ten destination countries (the United States, Spain, China, France, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Italy, Thailand, Japan, and India, in that order) currently receive 45 percent of all travel spending, including for domestic travel. But some new locales are gaining traction (Exhibit 5).

A significant number of travelers are expanding their horizons, booking journeys to less visited countries that are near to old standbys. For instance, Laos and Malaysia, which both border Thailand—an established destination that is home to Bangkok, the world’s most visited city 20 Katherine LaGrave, “This is the world’s most visited city,” AFAR , January 31, 2024. —are up a respective 20 percent and 17 percent, respectively, in year-over-year international travel spending.

The world’s top ten destination countries currently receive 45 percent of all travel spending, including domestic-travel spending. But some new locales are gaining traction.

Several other countries that have crafted thoughtful tourism demand generation strategies—such as Peru, the Philippines, Rwanda, and Vietnam—are also expected to reap benefits in the coming years. Vietnam logged a remarkable 40 percent increase in tourism spending in the five years before the pandemic. Postpandemic, it has rebounded in part by waiving visa requirements for European travelers (while indicating intent to offer similar exemptions in the future for Chinese and Indian travelers). 21 Ashvita Singh, “Vietnam looks to offer visa-free entry to Indians: India report,” Skift, November 20, 2023. The Philippines has made a concerted effort to shift its sun-and-beach branding toward a more well-rounded image, replacing its long-standing “It’s more fun in the Philippines” tourism slogan with “Love the Philippines.” Peru is highlighting less visited archeological sites while also marketing itself as a top-notch culinary destination through the promotion of Peruvian restaurants abroad. Rwanda is investing in infrastructure to become a major African transit hub, facilitated by Qatar Airways’ purchase of a 60 percent stake in the country’s major airport. 22 Dylan Cresswell, “Rwanda plots ambitious tourism recovery,” African Business , July 28, 2022. Rwanda has also successfully capitalized on sustainable tourism: by charging $1,500 per gorilla trekking permit, for instance, it has maximized revenue while reducing environmental impact.

Tourism players might consider taking some of these actions to lure tourists to less familiar destinations:

  • Collaborate across the tourism ecosystem. Promotion is not solely the domain of destination marketing organizations. Accommodation, transportation, and experience providers can also play important roles. In Singapore, for instance, the luxury resort Marina Bay Sands partners extensively with Singapore Airlines and the Singapore Tourism Board to offer compelling tourism offerings. Past collaborations have included flight and stay packages built around culinary festivals and a Lunar New Year drone show. 23 “Singapore Tourism Board, Marina Bay Sands & UOB partner to enliven Marina Bay precinct,” Singapore Tourism Board news release, January 25, 2024.
  • Use infrastructure linkage to promote new destinations. By extending route options, transportation providers can encourage visitors to create itineraries that combine familiar destinations with new attractions. In Asia, Thailand’s tourism authority has attempted to nudge visitors away from the most heavily trafficked parts of the country, such as Bangkok and Phuket, and toward less popular destinations.
  • Deploy social media to reach different demographics. Innovative social media campaigns can help put a destination on the map. Australia launched its “Ruby the kangaroo” campaign in China to coincide with the return of postpandemic air capacity between the two places. A video adapted for Chinese context (with appropriate gestures and a hashtag in Mandarin) garnered more than 20 million views in a single day on one of China’s largest social media platforms. 24 Nicole Gong, “Can Ruby the kangaroo bring Chinese tourists hopping back to Australia?,” SBS, June 5, 2023.
  • Embrace unknown status. “Off the beaten path” messaging can appeal to widely traveled tourists seeking fresh experiences. Saudi Arabia’s “#WhereInTheWorld” campaign promoted the country’s tourist spots by acknowledging that they are less familiar to travelers, using a series of images that compared these spots with better-known destinations.

As tourism stakeholders look to the future, they can take steps to ensure that they continue to delight existing travelers while also embracing new ones. Domestic and intraregional tourism remain major opportunities—catering to local tourists’ preferences while building infrastructure that makes travel more seamless within a region could help capture them. Creative collaboration among tourism stakeholders can help put lesser-known destinations on the map. Travel tides are shifting. Expertly navigating these currents could yield rich rewards.

Environmental activist sticks protest poster to famous Monet painting in Paris

By Lucia Suarez Sang

June 1, 2024 / 11:32 AM EDT / CBS News

An environmental activist was arrested Saturday after she stuck a protest sign to a Monet painting at the famed Orsay Museum in Paris.

The activist with the group Food Riposte targeted Claude Monet's "Poppy Field" painting, affixing a sticker that covered about half of the artwork with an apocalyptic, futuristic vision of the same scene, according to The Associated Press.

The group said it's supposed to show what the field would look like in 2100, after it's been "ravaged by flames and drought" if more action isn't taken against climate change.

The museum, known in French as the Musée d'Orsay, is a top tourist destination and home to some of the world's most-loved Impressionist work.

It was not immediately clear whether the incident damaged the 151-year-old painting. The museum did not respond to the Associated Press' request for comment.

The woman was detained pending investigation, according to Paris police.

Food Riposte is one of several environmental activist groups that target famous artworks and stage protests across Europe in calls for action to the earth from further damage to the climate.

In January, two women with Food Riposte hurled soup at the glass protecting the "Mona Lisa" at the Louvre Museum in Paris and shouted slogans advocating for a sustainable food system.

Last month, at the British Library in London, an 82-year-old priest and an 85-year-old retired teacher were detained after they smashed the glass case containing an original copy of the Magna Carta . The pair of protesters from Just Stop Oil pounded on the case with a hammer and chisel.

Weeks later, six climate activists with the German-based group Last Generation, were arrested after they broke into the Munich airport and glued themselves to access routes leading to runways, officials said. It caused the airport to be temporarily closed and led to around 60 flight cancellations during a busy holiday weekend.

Last year, climate activists turned the water of Rome's iconic Trevi Fountain black in  protest of the fossil fuel industry . Activist group Ultima Generazione said that eight people poured "vegetable charcoal" in the water as demonstrators pushed for an "immediate stop" to fossil fuel subsidies.

Climate activist sticks protest sign to Monet painting in Paris

T his is the infuriating moment a climate activist defaced a Monet painting Paris' Musée d'Orsay by sticking a protest sign over the famed work of art.

The protester, from French environmental activist group Riposte Alimentaire ('Food Counterattack'), targeted 'Poppy Field' by Claude Monet, defacing it with a sticker that covered half the painting with an apocalyptic vision of the same scene.

The group said it's purpose is to show how the field would look 'ravaged by flames and drought' in the year 2100,  if more action isn't taken against climate change .

The museum, known in French as the Musee d'Orsay, is a top tourist destination and home to some of the world's most-loved Impressionist works.

The woman was detained pending investigation, according to Paris police.

It was unclear whether the incident damaged the painting and the museum did not respond to requests for comment.

It was the latest of several actions by protesters from the group to target artworks in France to call for action to protect food supplies from further damage to the climate.

In January, two members of the group were arrested after throwing soup at the Mona Lisa before shouting climate slogans at the gathered crowd at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

They sprayed the 16th-century masterpiece by Leonardo Da Vinci with pumpkin soup as they demanded the right to 'healthy and sustainable food'.

The group have taken responsibility for the demonstration on their own website in, what they call, 'Wave 1' of their action.

In February, the group disrupted the European Bioethics Forum, a debate in Strasbourg, France, by walking on stage and demanding action for their cause.

A few days later, they hurled soup at Claude Monet's 'Le Printemps' (Spring) inside the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon, France.

The 1872 painting was protected by glass, but still underwent a close inspection and restoration, the museum said after the incident.

The following month, Riposte Alimentaire disrupted the Saut Hermes 2024, an annual horse jumping show in Paris, with members infiltrating the arena to hold a protest banner.

Last month, the group threw orange powder over the floor of the Palace of Versailles' famous Hall of Mirrors building and chanted their calls for establishing social security for sustainable food in the country.

They are advocating for a monthly vital food card loaded with 150 Euros for all citizens to purchase democratically approved products, saying that there is a 'widening gap between the privileged few and the majority struggling to make ends meet'.

An NBA Star’s Remark Becomes a Minnesota Rallying Cry

Minnesota Timberwolves fans have picked up on a phrase uttered by their star, and are hardly put off by its mild vulgarity.

basketball player celebrates

By Victor Mather

Dearest Times readers:

The following article contains a three-letter word beginning with an A that is considered vulgar. We would avoid the term, but it doesn’t seem possible. Profoundest apologies in advance.

OK, deep breath:

“Bring ya ass.”

In the last day or so, basketball fans and the people of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in general have been saying it. That includes the city’s basketball star, who launched it, the local tourism council, and many fans gleeful about a great victory.

It started with the win: In a do-or-die Game 7, the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied from 20 points down to defeat the defending champion Denver Nuggets, 98-90.

Afterward, the winning team’s star, Anthony Edwards, was interviewed by the TV commentator and the former N.B.A. great Charles Barkley.

“I have not been to Minnesota in maybe 20 years,” Barkley said. Edwards interrupted him: “Bring your —” and so on.

The impromptu remark, with a more informal pronunciation and spelling of “you,” suddenly became a meme and then something more.

Minnesotans began asking Gov. Tim Walz to make it the state’s tourism slogan. He responded on social media with the eyes emoji, apparently implying a willingness to look at the idea.

Doubt it? Well, the state tourism board, with or without gubernatorial approval, went ahead and posted the phrase in large letters on its home page , though it did demurely render the offending word as “A**.”

Photoshop virtuosos got to work adding the phrase to the state seal and various area landmarks. Fans suggested the line was the epitome of memorable Minnesota sports sayings, though there was still strong support for a 2005 utterance by Randy Moss of the Vikings who, when asked how he would pay a $10,000 fine, replied, “straight cash, homie.”

On the postgame broadcast, Barkley asked Edwards for a list of good restaurants, and some Minnesotans began recommending places people could bring their, uh, posterior regions for the Western Conference finals against the Dallas Mavericks beginning Wednesday in Minneapolis.

Few seem to be wringing their hands over the proliferation of the three-letter word.

Minnesota sports fans may have other things on their minds. The region could use a winner. Since coming to town in 1989, the Timberwolves have only once before made a conference final, and they lost that one to the Los Angeles Lakers in a heartbreaking Game 6.

The baseball Twins last won it all in 1991. The Vikings have never won a Super Bowl, and the Wild and their predecessors, the North Stars, have never won a Stanley Cup. The Lynx of the WNBA have been the major trophy winners in recent times, taking four titles in the 2010s.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is not the first region to embrace a silly slogan, or one to annoy grammar scolds. New Orleans Saints fans are fond of saying “Who dat?” The 1973 Mets celebrated an unlikely run with the inspirational slogan “Ya gotta believe” (they lost in the World Series). The 2008 Phillies asked “Why can’t us?” (they did win).

Mississippi State took a snide insult for their hometown of Starkville and embraced it, dubbing the city “Stark Vegas.”

With athletes, city leaders and, for all we know, maybe ministers and even English teachers, proclaiming Minnesota’s new slogan throughout the Twin Cities, another blow has been landed against the efforts of blue stockings to regulate public discourse and purge the language of naughty words.

Before you accuse Edwards, born and raised in Atlanta, of being a mercenary devoted to the Twin Cities because he is paid there, consider his words to Vanity Fair earlier this year.

New York and Los Angeles are “cool,” he said. “But they ain’t better than Minnesota.”
