The vessel will then transit through the first set of locks, the Miraflores Locks, where it will ascend 18 meters in two distinct steps. Next, the Pacific Queen will enter Miraflores Lake, which is a small artificial body of fresh water that separates Pedro Miguel Locks from Miraflores Locks. The vessel will transit through Pedro Miguel Locks, which is one of the two sets of locks on the Pacific side, and here the vessel ascends 9 meters in one step.

After exiting Pedro Miguel locks, the Pacific Queen will travel through the Gaillard Cut, where the Chagres River flows into the canal. The Gaillard Cut (also known as Culebra Cut because its curves resemble a snake) is one of the main points of interest for visitors because it was carved through the Continental Divide and this section of the Canal is full of history and geological value. As you transit the Cut you will be able to appreciate the continuous maintenance that this area requires, because it is very susceptible to landslides. In this area you will also be able to observe the work in process for the Panama Canal expansion project.

You will enjoy a trip through Gatun Lake, which was formed by erecting the Gatun Dam across the Chagres River. During your transit through Gatun Lake you will pass the Smithsonian Research Station at Barro Colorado. You will also experience the Gatun Locks, which are the only set of locks in the Atlantic sector. In Gatun Locks, the vessel will be lowered a total of 26 meters in three distinct chambers. Upon arriving at Colon, you will disembark at Pier 6, where transportation back to Panama City will be provided.  We should get back to Panama City around 7:30 - 8:00pm.

Venturing close to some of Gatun’s many lush and uninhabited islands, you’ll have a chance to learn about this unique eco-system; created during the construction of the Canal, it’s the second largest artificial lake on the planet. With sharp-eyes, this enriching excursion offers a chance to observe some of the region’s indigenous species including exotic tropical birds, crocodiles, caimans, sloths, and families of capuchin, howler and white-face monkeys.   Back at Gamboa, you’ll visit the resort’s ecological exhibits. Today’s adventure begins with a scenic one hour drive to the edge of Gatun River where Emberá villagers will meet you with their dugout canoes. Traveling silently up the Gamboa River and deeper into the forest offers a chance to spot herons, egrets and ospreys. With a bit of luck and sharp eyes, you might also see toucans, otters and sloths. Stepping ashore in their village, you’ll have time to explore the community, with your guide on-hand to offer information and insight.   As you engage with the villagers, you’ll learn first-hand about their cultural traditions, cuisine and language – much of which can be traced to ancestors who migrated from Colombia’s Chocó region in the late 1700’s. Informal presentations will deepen your insight into their daily life, tribal history and enduring ways – from their shamanic rites to dance and music. After lunch with the villagers, you might join a tribal elder for a nature walk to learn about their medicinal use of indigenous rainforest plants. Historic Portobelo + Our Pacific Resort

Westin Hotel - Playa Bonita, Panama

Bid goodbye to the rainforest and wind your way through the tropical forest alongside the Canal, where you’ll catch superb views of the Canal and its ship traffic.  Visit the Panama Canal Expansion Center where, from the Observation Deck 164 feet above ground, you’ll have an enthralling view of the recently-expanded Canal. Opened to traffic in 2016, this new waterway and third set of locks literally doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal, which can now accommodate massive ships up to 1,400 feet long and 180 feet wide. After a Caribbean lunch, you’ll explore Portobelo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its wealth of history and the ruins of Colonial-era fortifications, many with their ancient cannons still in battle-ready position. You’ll also visit the 17th-century Customs House and see the revered Cristo Negro statue which appeared mysteriously in Portobelo in the mid 1600’s. After sightseeing, we’ll take you to our deluxe Pacific beach resort where oceanview rooms have been reserved for A+R guests.  Meals B+L

At the BioDiversity Museum, designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, you’ll learn how Panama’s vital role as a land bridge between North and South America has impacted biodiversity and human life on both Continents.   Then join city residents shopping at the lively fish market and visit with one of the vendors, pausing to sample some ceviche and local beer. For lunch, we’ll take you to a local restaurant where traditional Panamanian dishes are prepared and served with gastronomic flair. The day’s sightseeing ends with a tour through the archaeological ruins at Panama Viejo c . Founded in 1519, this was the earliest European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. Return to our deluxe Pacific resort in the late afternoon where the evening is free to enjoy and dine as you wish.  Meals B+L

A Day in the Countryside

Another genuine experience of daily Panamanian life is yours this morning as you step aboard one of the region’s Diablos Rojos – buses that have been custom painted with colorful, often narrative murals. It’s a popular and fun way to get around! Then we’ll take you into the lofty hills of Altos de Campana National Park. Founded in 1966 as Panama’s first national park, it’s only an hour’s drive from the capital; but for all of its natural beauty and appeal, it remains relatively unknown by most travelers and even among some Panamanians. Surrounded by cool rolling mountains that descend to the Pacific Ocean, you’ll travel all the way to one of the Park’s highest points for sweeping views of the Canal Basin and Chame Point with its groves of mangrove forest. Altos de Campana is home to a variety of exotic birds like the orange-bellied trogon and white-tailed hawk, making this Park a great destination for bird watchers.   At a nearby orchid farm, you’ll learn about their cultivation of these delicate plants and sample some of the tropical fruits that are also grown here. For lunch we’ll take you to a popular local fonda ; these typical countryside restaurants are known for their fine farm-to-table Panamanian food – and chilled local beer! Back at the Westin resort, you’ll have time to relax or even go for a swim before freshening up for this evening’s Farewell Dinner. Enjoy the fine cuisine of our 5-star resort and toast your fellow travelers with a glass of wine.  Meals B+L+D

Panama Canal Transit Tour

Panama canal | full or partial transit.

Should you do the Panama Canal transit tour while you are in Panama? The answer is most definitely yes, but do you take the full or partial transit route?

Sailing through this impressive, world-famous feat of engineering can be programmed into a day spent in the capital of Panama but only if that day happens to fall on a weekend (obviously we can plan it that way if this experience is on your bucket list). The partial transit is far more popular and is often run while the full transit has quite limited dates due to lower demand.

panama canal full transit tour

The full transit tour takes you from the Pacific to the Atlantic, or vice versa, during a full day aboard which, adding the transfers to and from the ports, means 10 – 12 hours are spent on the excursion. The bragging rights that go with the full transit are clear, traveling the 80km along the canal and crossing the continental divide between the two oceans is a notable travelogue to have under your belt. But is it really that much better as an experience?

The partial transit takes around 6 hours when you factor in the transfers, checking-in, boarding and disembarking. For this description let’s assume you take the Northbound route, from Panama City to Gamboa. The first thing to note, whether you choose the partial or full transit is that you don’t know exactly what time the tour starts until the day before, for reasons we explain below. You will be given a range of time, let’s say 6 am to 7 am, for when check-in could be required but that could change to be earlier or later depending on canal traffic.

The tourist ships take advantage of the space a cargo ship leaves in the lock in order to rise and fall at the same time. Using the lock for a relatively small tourist ship, displacing some 5000 tonnes or so, would not be possible due to the immense cost of each filling or emptying of tens of thousands of gallons of water. Tickets for such a service would cost thousands of dollars per person, instead of around 130.

panama canal full transit tour

The super large vessels, which can weigh over 150,000 tonnes, don’t leave much room in the lock, so the tourist ships have to find space behind the 60 to 70,000-ton cargo ships that leave perhaps 250 metres of space. This means they have to vary the times when they can enter the locks but this also means that you always get up-close-and-personal with these gigantic seafarers.

After you leave the port at the end of the causeway near Panama City you navigate toward the canal entrance, passing many ships moored up and waiting for their time slot to enter. There are some superb views of the city skyline and then under the impressive Puente de las Americas bridge. Then comes the Miraflores lock complex which is the lock that non-cruise tourists always visit, where there is an observation platform for the general public. These visitors are now watching you along with the huge ship you are shadowing!

The bridge of the Americas over the Panama Canal

It takes a long time to get the cargo ship into its position ahead of you, you see how the powerful tug boats manoeuvre the ships into place and escort them the whole way. In each lock, the ships are hooked up to little locomotives with cables and these guide the ship forward. You will see the huge gates closing and opening and see how fast the locks fill or empty as enormous volumes of water are pumped around. The whole process is fascinating.

On the partial transit, you will pass through two lock systems (Miraflores and Pedro Miguel) and navigate the lake in between, plus you will sail through the Gaillard Cut crossing the continental divide. There are ships coming southbound all the time so you will pass other vessels as you can see in our photos, some of them are absolutely massive and they must be tricky to navigate in a relatively narrow channel.

The tourist boats are well equipped and comfortable enough for the day out, with a simple breakfast and a box lunch provided for the partial transit. For the full transit, there are extra snacks in the afternoon. The partial transit ends at the port town of Gamboa which is about halfway between the two oceans, and upon arrival, you board buses for the 45-minute drive back to the port where you started. From there you get shuttled back to your hotels.

So is the partial Transit better?

In our opinion, yes! If you are not obsessed with having the bragging rights from the full transit, ocean to ocean, then the partial transit is more than enough and a great experience. You go through two lock complexes, navigate the lake and the channel, see lots of huge cargo ships and witness how the Panama Canal works close up. Plus it is cheaper and excursions run on many more dates, it’s definitely the way to go.

You will then enter the south end of the Gailard Cut where the Chagres River flows into the Canal. The Gailard Cut (also known as Culebra Cut because its curves resemble a snake) is one of the main points of interest for visitors because it was carved through the Continental Divide and this section of the Canal is full of history and geological value. The Pacific Queen will travel the Cut's 13.7 kilometers on the way to Gamboa Dredging Division. As you transit the Cut you will be able to appreciate the continuous maintenance that this area requires, because it is very susceptible to landslides.

You will disembark at the Gamboa Dredging Division where you will board motor coaches for a 45-minute ride back to the Flamenco Marina.

Our tour starts at the Flamenco Resort and Marina. Passengers board motor coaches for a 45-minute ride to the town of Gamboa where the Panama Canal Dredging Division is located. Once in Gamboa, passengers board the Pacific Queen to start the water portion of the tour. The Panama Canal partial transit tour begins at the north end of the Gailard cut, where the Chagres River flows into the canal. The Gaillard Cut (also known as Culebra Cut because its curves resemble a snake) is one of the main points of interest for visitors because it was carved through the Continental Divide and this section of the Canal is full of history and geological value. The Pacific Queen will travel the Cut's 13.7 kilometers on the way to Pedro Miguel Locks. As you transit the Cut you will be able to appreciate the continuous maintenance that this area requires, because it is very susceptible to landslides.

panama canal full transit tour

Before reaching the Pedro Miguel Locks at the southern end of the Cut, you will be able to view the Centennial Bridge which crosses over the Canal. Next, the Pacific Queen will enter Pedro Miguel Locks, which is one of the two sets of locks on the Pacific side, and here the vessel is lowered 9 meters in one step. You will then enter Miraflores Lake, which is a small artificial body of fresh water that separates Pedro Miguel from Miraflores Locks, the latter being the final set of locks before reaching the Pacific Ocean. At Miraflores Locks the vessel is lowered 18 meters in two distinct steps.

Once in the Pacific Ocean the vessel will sail to the beautiful Flamenco Marina where passengers disembark. On the way to Flamenco, you will pass under the Bridge of the Americas, and later, you will be able to admire the Bay of Panama and Panama City's splendorous skyline.

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

panama canal full transit tour

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows. The larger Eurodam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam feature additional specialty dining options, such as Tamarind and Nami Sushi, as well as popular music venues B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Dec. 13-29, 2024) and 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transits offer luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

Plan even further ahead for Grandeur's 22-night Miami-to-Los Angeles transit (Jan. 3-25, 2026) to enjoy additional Caribbean ports of call. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 9, 2026, the ship will sail a 16-night Panama Canal transit from Los Angeles to Miami with an itinerary similar to the 2024 and early 2025 cruises.

Who should go : This itinerary can be a wonderful splurge for a couple seeking to celebrate a milestone anniversary or birthday in a memorable way on a luxurious new ship. Prices start at a hefty $10,099 per person for a spacious balcony suite, but they also include airfare, transfers, gratuities, dining and beverages, Wi-Fi and shore excursions — meaning you'll hardly have any other vacation expenses.

panama canal full transit tour

For a Panama Canal experience that begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Cruises ' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean itinerary is a great option. There's still time to book the Dec. 2, 2024, cruise or the half-dozen almost identical sailings that follow through April 2025. All sailings are aboard the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond and visit Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendjik, Bonaire; and George Town, Grand Cayman (Willemstad, Curacao, replaces Grand Cayman on some 2025 sailings).

Who should go : Celebrity Beyond and its Edge-series sister ships appeal to millennials, Gen Xers and young-at-heart baby boomers who appreciate innovative design, entertainment and dining options. The ships are geared toward couples or groups of friends, but families with older teens might also enjoy the onboard vibe. There are no splash pools or waterslides for younger kids, although calls on three Caribbean islands offer aquatic fun.

Windstar Cruises' 7-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal cruise

To explore the Panama Canal region in a relaxed manner aboard an intimate motorized sailing yacht or small ship, check out Windstar Cruises' seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal itinerary. Bookable on more than a dozen dates from November 2024 through March 2026, the itinerary is offered aboard 148-passenger Wind Star or Wind Spirit (in 2024 and 2025) and 312-passenger Star Pride (in 2026). The ship will travel from Colon, Panama, to Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica (or vice versa), transiting the canal. Passengers can visit Panama City and Isla Parida in Panama, plus Golfo Dolce and Quepos (for Manuel Antonio National Park) in Costa Rica.

Who should go : Fans of small-ship cruising who enjoy a casual onboard ambience, are interested in nature and wildlife and wish to sample the regional flavors of Central America should consider a Windstar cruise . All accommodations on the sailing yachts are in snug yet well-designed staterooms with windows but no balconies. Wind Star and Wind Spirit are cozy and social four-deck ships, each featuring a pool and pool bar, a lounge and two restaurants. Norwegian Cruise Line's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise

panama canal full transit tour

There's no "Panama Canal" in this itinerary's name, but Norwegian Cruise Line 's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise (Feb. 27-March 11, 2026) does a full canal transit as it sails from Miami to Lima, Peru. The 2,402-passenger Norwegian Jade will visit historic Santa Marta and Cartagena in Colombia; Panama City; Manta, Ecuador; and Trujillo and Lima in Peru.

Who should go : Couples and friends interested in experiencing not just a Panama Canal transit but some of the top coastal experiences along the Pacific coast of South America should choose this itinerary. Norwegian Jade is an older, smaller vessel that was refurbished in 2022 and features a top deck more conducive to sunning than thrill rides. The ship also has a surprising number of restaurants for its size: two main dining rooms, a buffet restaurant, a pub-style bar and grill, an Asian restaurant and an outdoor grill on a complimentary basis, plus six specialty dining venues (including a steakhouse and venues showcasing French, Italian and Japanese cuisines) for an added fee.

Oceania's 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles cruise

Oceania Cruises ' 1,200-passenger Vista — which debuted in May 2023 as the first new-build ship in Oceania's fleet in more than a decade — will offer back-to-back, 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Jan. 8-24, 2025) and Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 24-Feb. 9, 2025) itineraries. Both sailings visit six countries with port calls that include George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico. (The second sailing visits San Diego instead of Ensenada.)

Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium-size vessel and is ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication. Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, mix of grand and intimate spaces and wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) A more immersive mixology program features curated cocktail menus, indulgent pairing experiences and specialty beverage carts.

Cunard's 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco cruise

panama canal full transit tour

Cunard's brand-new 2,996-passenger ship Queen Anne, which debuts in May 2023, will make both its first transatlantic crossing and its first Panama Canal transit on this historic 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco sailing (Jan. 9-Feb. 4, 2025). The ship will first cross the Atlantic and then overnight in New York before calling on Aruba, transiting the canal and visiting Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It will conclude with an overnight in San Francisco.

The winter transatlantic crossing might not be right for everyone, but the second half of this voyage explores warm-weather destinations with plenty of relaxing sea days for sunning, reading, taking dance lessons and enjoying expert lectures.

Who should go : British cruise line Cunard appeals mainly to older travelers who savor the line's formal traditions. This cruise is for you if you enjoy afternoon tea, dressing up for dinner, gala evenings and dancing to big-band orchestras. This particular itinerary appeals to retirees who wish to visit several cruise regions in one sailing.

Viking's 180-day World Voyage

For the ultimate cruise indulgence, Viking's 180-day World Voyage I includes a Panama Canal transit (on Christmas Day, no less) as 930-passenger Viking Sky cruises from Fort Lauderdale to New York City (Dec. 19, 2024-June 17, 2025). This round-the-world cruise will visit 37 countries as guests enjoy Viking Sky's modern Scandinavian interior decor, soothing LivNordic Spa, two pools (including one with a retractable roof) and six onboard restaurants. Pricing includes airfare, gratuities and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner.

If this longer voyage is sold out, consider the 138-day Viking World Cruise (departing Dec. 19, 2025), also on Viking Sky. This sailing, which travels from Fort Lauderdale to London (Greenwich), visits 28 countries and transits the Panama Canal on the eighth day.

Who should go : With cruise fares that start at $79,995 and $59,995 per person, respectively, these extended adventures at sea require a luxury budget. Viking 's base clientele is mostly retired or close-to-retirement-age professionals who enjoy the cruise line's focus on educational enrichment (via onboard lectures) and serene ambience (there's no casino, and the nighttime vibe is on the quiet side).

Top Panama Canal FAQs

When is the best time to cruise the Panama Canal?

The Panama Canal is open to ships year-round, but the most pleasant time to cruise is in the winter season, from November to May. During these months, the climate is less humid and there is less rainfall.

How long does it take for a cruise ship to pass through the canal?

Typically, the transit of the Panama Canal takes eight to ten hours, but this depends on how much traffic there is and whether there is any congestion at the massive locks. You’ll find the transit is packed with excitement, whether your ship is squeezing into the locks, making its way along the narrow channel, or crossing the serene expanse of Gatun Lake, where there’s a great chance of spotting wildlife including monkeys, iguanas, and toucans.

What are the departure ports?

Celebrity’s Panama Canal cruises depart from Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.

Which side of the ship is best for cruising through the Panama Canal?

There is no “best” side for cruising the Panama Canal. You will most likely find you want to enjoy the experience from different areas on the ship. When you’re in a lock, it’s fascinating to watch the mechanisms of these engineering masterpieces, so find the best position on deck to observe this.

On Celebrity Beyond, guests of The Retreat can take in the view from The Retreat Sundeck. Other vantage points include the Magic Carpet, cantilevered over the side of the ship, as well as the Rooftop Terrace and the Sunset Bar.

On Celebrity Summit, guests of The Retreat can view the locks from the Retreat Sundeck on deck 12 forward. Other options include the Sky Lounge, which has panoramic forward views and is climate-controlled, or the Rooftop Terrace, aft.

On a transit from Panama City to Colon, the futuristic skyline of Panama City will be on your starboard (right) side. When you pass through the skinny Culebra Cut between Panama City and Gamboa, you’ll have the greenery of a national park on both sides, so this is a good time to look for monkeys and toucans in the trees.

Entering Gatun Lake, it’s fun to be forward on deck as you can see the procession of ships coming towards you. You could also be aft, at the back of the ship, with a pair of binoculars to spot other ships.

The most important thing to do is to head up on deck and absorb this spectacular experience. Every transit will have expert commentary that’s broadcast on the decks and in the lounges, so you’ll be able to gain a deeper insight into the workings of the canal and its history.

How long do cruises last?

Celebrity’s Panama Canal cruises last either 11, 14, or 15 nights.

What's the difference between a full transit and a partial transit cruise of the Panama Canal?

A full transit of the Panama Canal takes you from the Pacific to the Caribbean, or vice versa. A partial transit, on the other hand, gives you a taste of the Panama Canal on a shorter cruise from Colon, on the Caribbean side, to the Gatun Locks and back again. You’ll still enjoy the experience of going through the massive locks.

When your ship spends the day in Colon, you can see more of Panama on a range of shore excursions. Despite the monumental achievement of engineering that the Panama Canal represents, the drive from Colon to Panama City is just under an hour, so there are plenty of options.

What are the main ports of call on a Panama Canal cruise?

Celebrity offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises, with several different ports of call. You could sail from Fort Lauderdale to the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) and Cartagena in Colombia. A sailing from Miami to Los Angeles visits Cartagena, Puntarenas in Costa Rica, and Puerto Vallarta. Other cruises include stops in Huatulco, Mexico, and Grand Cayman.

What can I expect to see and experience during the canal transit?

During the 48-mile transit, you’ll see everything from intricate lock systems to the serene landscapes of the rainforest and Gatun Lake. Your ship will be raised up 85 feet through a system of three locks to the level of the freshwater Gatun Lake. Once you’ve crossed the lake, you will descend 85 feet back to sea level through another set of locks.

Being in the locks is a thrilling experience and gives you an insight into how extraordinary the canal is, all the more so given that it’s more than 100 years old. You’ll see everything from giant cargo ships to small yachts making the transit. Visitors in the viewing galleries at the locks will wave as you pass through.

On the stretches between the locks, you’ll be immersed in nature. The narrow Culebra Cut, an artificial channel near Panama City, is lined with greenery, while the expanse of the Gatun Lake is dotted with rainforested islands and is a great place to look for wildlife.

There are other manmade wonders to look out for, too. On the Panama City side of the canal, you’ll sail under the graceful arch of the Bridge of the Americas, which forms part of the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Patagonia. Just beyond the bridge, as you head toward the Pacific, look out for the Biomuseu, a striking jumble of brightly colored shapes designed by famous architect Frank Gehry, housing eight galleries showcasing Panama’s biodiversity.

What excursions are available?

If you choose a cruise that includes a partial transit of the canal, you can experience Panama’s beauty during a day in Colon. Excursions from here include eco-adventures on Gatun Lake, where you can see capuchin and howler monkeys, caimans, and three-toed sloths. You could visit the locks along the canal and tour the visitor centers, stopping to watch ships pass through the narrow channels.

Or take a trip to Panama City itself, a dramatic contrast between glassy skyscrapers and the narrow alleys and colorful facades of the atmospheric Casco Viejo, or old town, dating back to the 17th century. There are excursions to an Embera village, too, where you can learn about the traditional lifestyle of this rainforest tribe.

What is there to do on the ship?

You’ll find no shortage of things to do on board your luxurious Celebrity ship. Sunbathe by the pool, relax in a bubbling hot tub, join a class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a treatment in the spa.

Enjoy exploring all the different dining options, from made-to-order burgers and salads by the pool to French classics and a delightful 3D cartoon animation in Le Petit Chef, and steaks and seafood in the elegant Tuscan Grille. Elevate your experience to The Retreat and you can enjoy fine dining in Luminae, as well as suite accommodation and access to an exclusive lounge.

On Edge-Series ships, the Magic Carpet, suspended over the side of the ship, gives you uninterrupted sea views and is the perfect place to sit with a coffee or cocktail, enjoying the sea air. Or spend part of your Panama Canal transit in the Sunset Bar, at the aft of the ship, for wonderful views of the ships following you.

The importance of this bridge can not be overlooked as not only does it connect Panama City with the rest of the country but more importantly is one of the two bridges which cross the Panama Canal and effectively create the connection between North and Central America with South America. Later you will have the opportunity to see the Canal operation up close as well take you to the Miraflores Locks and Pedro Miguel Locks. The tour boat will traverse the first set of locks, The Miraflores locks, where we will be rise up a total of 18 meters (60 feet) in two steps as you experience how the water elevates the boat above sea level. The Canal visitor center is located there at Miraflores Locks and it is here that youll observe as dozens of curious onlookers watch as you and your boat pass through The Miraflores Locks. We then traverse the Mirraflores Lake which is a quite small fresh-water lake that separates the two sets of locks on the Pacific Side of the Canal. At the other side of the lake we arrive at the Pedro Miguel locks. At the Pedro Miguel Locks the tour boat will ascend a total of 9 meters (30 feet) in one single step. At the both the Miraflores and the Pedro Miguel locks youll have the opportunity to experiment just how the boat is elevated as it is trapped within the confines of the locks which are in effect, huge concrete-walled chambers with sailing gates which allow the sealed chamber to be quickly filled with water until reaching the level required to permit continuing the voyage on to the next section of the canal. It is a truly a unique engineering marvel that must be experienced. Upon exiting the Pedro Miguel Locks the tour boat will pass through the Corte Culebra where the Chagres Rivers flows into the Canal. The Chagres River is the source of fresh water for the Panama Canal. It is because of this river that the Panama Canal is a fresh water Canal. The Corte Culebra section of the Canal is known by this name because of the similarity of its curves with those of a snake (Corte=Cut.Culebra=Snake). This is actually one of the most interesting sections of the canal as it was cut through the solid rock formation which constitutes the Continental Divide, giving this section of the canal grand historic and geographic importance. After passing through the Corte Culebra we will travel underneath the second bridge which crosses the Panama Canal, The Puente Centenario (The Centennial Bridge). At this point you will be able to observe the continued maintenance that this area requires due to its susceptibility to land slides along the Banks of the canal. Minutes later you will have the opportunity to navigate the famous Gatun Lake. For many years this mass of fresh water was known to be the largest artificial lake in the world, and is still one of the largest in all the world. Gatun Lake is fed by the powerful Chagres River which also feeds the entire Panama Canal. The Chagres has the unusual claim of drainage into two oceans. This river feeds water to the Panama Canal for its operation. Crossing Gatun Lake feels as if you were crossing the ocean due to the immensity of this body of water. Located throughout the volume of its turquoise colored, fresh waters you will be able to appreciate dozens of all islands that are home to an impressive diversity of flora and fauna, many of which are only found in this unique habitat. For this reason Gatun Lake is a site of great importance from an ecological stand point and as such The Smithsonian Institute has its center for tropical investigations located precisely on the Barro Colorado Island. At this very location scientists have discovered dozens of new species of life that exist exclusively on this island. At this site you will witness how nature and man combine to create one of the most amazing environments on the planet. Upon arriving at the Caribbean side of the canal our boat will enter the multi-level Gatun Locks where in a series of 3 steps we will descend a total of 26 meters (85 feet) down to the level of the Atlantic ocean. This fascinating lock system is both majestic and awe-inspiring at the same time.Leaving this final set of locks our boat will navigate on the city of Colon on the Caribbean coast of Panama where we will dock at the cruise ship terminal 6 and all the passengers will disembark. You will immediately board luxury tour buses for our return trip to Panama City and to the very meeting point where our tour began. Travel time from the city of Colon back to Panama City by tour bus is approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Traveler Reviews

Excellent service, great experience with Panama Canal Tours. The full transit tour is amazing, from the pacific to the Atlantic in just 10 hrs. Thank you

Though it rained we still had a great time. Not only did we visit the canal, we also visited historical sites in the area. Our guide Dennis was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the places we visited. My girlfriend loves history so she really enjoyed it. I would recommend Dennis and this tour to anyone.

A dream come true, transiting the Panama Canal by boat. Thanks to Panama Canal Tours, trip organized by Ivantours. The locks are impressive, Gatun Lake is huge. The best tour.

We spend a little over a week in Panama City and wanted to do the Panama Canal & opted for the full transit vs. partial and are glad we did. The online reservation process and communication from the tour operator were excellent. We were notified of the hotel pickup time the day prior (the time varies somewhat depending on the time scheduled to enter the locks). The checkin and boarding were very efficient and the overall customer service exceeded our expectations. Breakfast was provided (fruit & small breakfast sandwiches) along with coffee. The partial transit folks disembark in Gamboa, about half-way through the canal. The partial-transit covers the most interesting part of the canal transit; after the partial folks leave the boat (over half) a boxed lunch is severed (a not too bad pasta salad & a cookie) and snacks later in the afternoon. Sodas, coffee and water are all included, beer was $3. The tour guide providing commentary was knowledgable and I thought added to the overall experience. Final disembarkation is a marina on the Caribbean Ocean side of the isthmus with about an hour long bus ride back to Panama City. The price was fair given the charges for transiting the canal, and for the roughly 12-hour tour. I would recommend the tour for anyone wanting to transit the canal, without wanting to take a 14-days cruise to do it. Note that the 2nd half of the canal transit is basically a boat ride on Gatun Lake (not much is lost in the partial vs. fill transit tour) but it was interesting observing the shipping operations.

Cesar from tour company stood me up. Said he was here at lobby at agreed time and was not. Said he called to find me - did not.

We had paid for Full Transit Boat Tour but because of covid there were not operating. We had to pay extra U$131 per person for Alternative Canal crossing tour, it was like paying again for the Monkey Island and Panama Canal Tour. Day tour and the driver were great, the person was friendly and explain everything, it was a very interesting day. Only complain was the price of the tour, we felt like we paid twice = our first U$250 per person was like not credited.

Panama Canal transits stalled in May but water level is slowly rising

Panama Canal transits stalled in May but water level is slowly rising

Transits per day down 1.3% in may versus april despite brightening sentiment.

7 June 2024 (Lloyd's List) - AFTER significant rebounds in February-April, Panama Canal transits levelled out in May, according to data released Thursday by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).

The ACP recorded 805 transits in May*, up 2% from April. However, with one more day in May than April, transits per day came in at 25.97, down 1.3% from the previous month.

There were 7.55 transits per day via the neo-panamax locks, up 2% month on month, and 18.42 transits via the panamax locks, down 2.5%.

There is still a long way to go for the waterway to return to normal.

Total transits per day were down 20% year on year in May, with daily voyages through the neo-panamax locks down 14% and those through the panamax locks down 23%.

Compared with May 2022, last month’s transits per day were down 27%, with neo-panamax transits down 18% and panamax transits down 30%.

Containerships boost neopanamax locks transits

There were 234 total transits through the neo-panamax locks in May, 12 more than in April.

Neo-panamax containership transits were up 14% compared to the month before, while transits of larger liquefied petroleum gas carriers (VLGCs) were down 11%. Liquefied natural gas carrier transits remained minimal, with just five LNG carriers using the waterway last month versus only one in April.

The trend for larger containerships in the Asia-US east coast trade has been a bright spot for the canal.

Traffic of larger containerships is now almost back to where it was in October, prior to severe restrictions put in place in November because of low water levels. There were 159 neo-panamax containership transits in May (more than any other ship type in either lock system), just five less than in October, and 35% above the low hit in January.

Smaller LPG carrier transits support panamax locks transits

The panamax locks handled 571 transits in May, essentially flat (up four transits) from the month before.

A surge of smaller LPG carriers came through these locks last month, with transits up 51% versus April, according to ACP statistics. Panamax LPG carrier transits are now well above pre-restriction levels (80 in May, 62 in October).

Dry bulk carrier transits rose 20% month on month, although this segment is still depressed compared with pre-restriction levels (94 in May versus 164 in October).

According to brokerage BRS, “Looking into the second half, we expect Panama Canal bulker transits to increase, although it might take some time — toward the end of the year — before numbers can fully rebound to historical averages.”

A rebound in Panama Canal usage by bulkers could be “a potential second-half curveball” for the sector, said BRS, noting that the bottleneck has been positive for rates. “Shipowners and operators have benefitted… as supply has tightened” due to restrictions.

In other shipping segments, declines in panamax locks transits for crude tankers, product tankers and refrigerated cargo carriers offset May’s month-on month gains for smaller LPG carriers and bulkers.

Gatun Lake water levels up versus 2023, still down versus 2022

On May 30, the ACP announced it had increased maximum authorised draught to 13.7 metres two weeks ahead of schedule.

The ACP hiked the number of daily panamax transit reservation slots from 17 to 24 on May 15, and increased neo-panamax reservation slots from seven to eight on June 1, bringing total daily slots to 32 (past months’ data confirms that actual daily transits can be less than total available reservation slots).

The Gatun Lake water level is rising — up 0.4 m from the recent low hit on April 23 and up 0.7 m from the current drought low reached on July 25, 2023.

But there is still a sizeable gap between the current level and the circa-2022 “normal”. While the ACP has touted the fact that water has exceeded 2023 readings since May 26, last year’s water level was already low by that time.

The Gatun Lake water level was 24.8 m as of Wednesday, up 0.5 m year on year but still down 1.4 m from the same day in 2022.

* The ACP does not release monthly transit statistics by segment or statistics on total monthly transits. It releases fiscal-year-to-date transits by segment and fiscal-year-to-date total transits since October, the beginning of its fiscal year. Lloyd’s List calculates monthly transits by comparing each month’s cumulative fiscal-year-to-date statistics

Boat Neva Tour and St Petersburg Canals

History of Canals and Neva River in St Petersburg, Russia

St Petersburg is situated on the Neva Rive r which is the main waterway in the city. As a result of the Northern War between Russia and Sweden the Valley of the Neva River became a part of the Russian Empire. In 1703 the city of St Petersburg was founded in the mouth of the Neva River by Peter the Great.

During Peter’s reign, there were no bridges over the Neva River. The Emperor wanted the people of St Petersburg to share his passion for sailing so riverboats were the common transport. Later there were floating bridges over Neva River. Only in the mid - 19 th century they were finally replaced with permanent bridges made of metal. Each of St Petersburg’s bridges has its own distinctive structure and appearance. They can be plain and elegant, large and small, subtle and imposing. Their decorative iron railings coupled with granite embankments give the face of the city a charming look.

There are 332 bridges stretching St Petersburg waterways including 21 drawbridges.

The earliest bridges were known by the bright colors in which they were painted: “blue”, “green”, and “red.
