Finding the Best Food in Madrid with Secret Food Tours

When we started planning our trip to Spain, I kept coming across the food. I read about how amazing the food was, how cheap the food is, and how Spain has a rich history in culinary arts. This meant that I really wanted to make sure that we  focused on the food while in Spain .

The problem is, how do you know where the best food is in a city?

Without an insider, you’ll miss some of the best food there is. We would have missed several foods if we hadn’t had the chance to find the best food in Madrid with  Secret Food Tours . We were on our last day in Madrid when we took this tour and hadn’t tried 6/7 foods we stopped for. I seriously recommend this tour to get to know Spanish food!

I had to make sure that I explored the awesome food scene while in Spain. Madrid is the perfect place to do it it’s one of the prettiest cities in Spain with a rich history and culture! It’s the capital, and people in Madrid take their food and drink very seriously. I was so excited to go on this tour with Secret Food Tours!

I was so impressed with Secret Food Tours and the places that they brought us! We honestly made stops at secret spots I completely would have missed (and not known about) because of them. Everywhere we went was incredible and we learned so much about Spanish history.

We were also able to make friends with others on the tour and are planning to meet up in New York! Our guide was very kind and definitely a local. She grew up around Madrid and was so knowledgable about it. We loved this tour! There were seven stops along the tour and every single one included a drink (alcoholic or not) and something to eat. You definitely will be full at the end .

We met up in the plaza right at 11 am and within the first 15 minutes, we were off to our first stop. The spot was actually started back in the 1800s by the royal family’s official baker and they’ve been baking for the royal family in Spain ever since! We had traditional cakes you can only find at this spot year-round and everyone got a different drink.  Spanish desserts and cakes  are delicious!

I chose tea because we were warned that the cake was really sweet and I needed something to counteract that. We had walked past this spot so many times and I never knew! Secret Food Tours really lives up to its name.

Once this stop was completed, we headed out through Plaza Mayor and learned about the history of this important Plaza. Basically, don’t leave your love locks in that square – it’s not a very romantic spot AT ALL! We were laughing about this secret as we watched a couple put a lock there. There were other little historic stops, too, like the oldest restaurant in the world and Madrid’s first hotel. Both are full of important history that you need to check out!

Our next stops were for some traditional food and drink in Madrid. We made stops for the famous jamon, cidre, and Calamari sandwiches. I had the jamon all over Madrid before this food tour, but I had no idea about the cider and Calamari sandwiches.

We stopped for jamon in a really cool local shop. We tried two different kinds and had to guess the difference between them – it was such a fun way to eat and drink. The extreme care and finesse that goes into the jamon is completely different from I expected. The people of Spain are so careful and detailed in the creating of their food. This really gave me a new appreciation for food.

We were brought to a spot where we learned how the cider is traditionally poured and how it is made. They paired it with a delicious Manchengo cheese which I learned isn’t a type of cheese, but refers to a region! The cidre was something I had no idea where to get or how to know if it was good or not. Thank goodness for this tour.

I was most shocked by the calamari sandwich. This is one of those dishes I would have known nothing about if it weren’t for the tour. Calamari has been important to Madrid for hundreds of years. The spot we were brought to is a local one where people come daily to get their calamari sandwich with squid that is flown in daily from the coast. It was so delicious and simple.

After these stops we walked past a really trendy market in Madrid, San Miguel Market. We walked right past it and into a spot I never would have known to look for. Inside was a local spot for Vermouth. It was so different from what I thought Vermouth was like. It tasted like an alcoholic version of coca-cola. We also had delicious oysters here that were spiced perfectly.

After this stop, we walked over to the palace and had one last traditional dish – Spanish Torta. It was delicious and such a fun last stop on the tour. We were able to relax outside and enjoy a full stomach at the end of our tour with a last glass of wine before heading to San Sebastian. Heading to Barcelona next? Whenever I travel to a new city and I have the time, I love trying out different food tours. With food tours, visitors get a good sampling of the cuisine of a city and also get to find out about some really awesome local places. One of the best food tours in Madrid is by Secret Food Tours .

I love taking food tours when traveling to get a good sample of the local cuisine. I also get to find awesome places to eat at and recommend to other people when they visit. Another reason I love taking food tours is getting to meet and talk to a local who knows the area. 

The only downside of food tours is that they can sometimes be expensive and can take up a lot of time if you are short on time. However, you usually get a lot of bang for your buck when taking a food tour, so that helps with the cost. 

Secret Food Tours is one of the best food tours in Madrid because you get to visit a lot of places and you get a good sampling of local food and beverages. I really liked that this tour included many beverages as well. 

How to Book a Secret Food Tour

It is super easy to book one of the best food tours in Madrid. Head to the Secret Food Tour website and find whatever city you are in. There, you select which day you would like to take your tour. From there, you can see how many spots are available and complete the booking information for your tour. 

Some tours have the options for upgrades you can add at the time of booking as well. Once completed, you will be sent a confirmation email with more details. 

Meeting Point for the Madrid Secret Food Tour

Once you book the best food tours in Madrid with Secret Food Tours, you will receive a confirmation email with information about where to meet. Our meeting point was at the Puerta del Sol near the “Oso y Madrono” statue, which was easily accessible by Metro.

Our guide got there about 5 minutes before the meeting time and carried an orange umbrella so we would know which guide was ours. Our guide Ariadna was amazing and very personable and friendly. 

Embarking on the Secret Food Tour

Once you meet up with your guide, they will go over some introduction and a brief history of the area. This is also the time to let your guide know about any dietary restrictions. This best food tour in Madrid included 5 stops. 

Throughout our 5 stops on this food tour, we sampled quite a bit of local cuisine including a local pastry, Iberian Ham, Manchego Cheese, Calamari Sandwich, and several local tapas options. The tour also included drinks such as Spanish cider, wine, liquor, hot chocolate (or coffee), vermouth, and beer. 

I really liked that there was a variety of food and beverage items. The local pastry was the perfect option to start with and I really liked trying the different types of Iberian Ham and various tapas. My favorite drink was the local liquor.

You will have to walk between each stop, but the longest walk was maybe 10 minutes long. In between the stops, you will pass by Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, and the Teatro Real. The tour ends near the Teatro Real and the Opera metro, thus making it easy to get around once the tour is completed. 

Final Thoughts on the Madrid Secret Food Tour

The Secret Food Tour was one of the best food tours in Madrid. I felt that they did a nice job mixing learning about the history of Madrid with the food of the area. I never felt we walked too much and always had plenty of time to sit and enjoy our food. We had an amazing guide who was friendly and answered all our questions. 

I appreciated there were options for people with dietary restrictions. For example, I do not eat seafood, so I had a few options instead of a calamari sandwich. Although it is a bit pricey, you really got a lot for the price. I would definitely recommend Secret Food Tour as one of the best food tours in Madrid. 

Transportation in Madrid

Public transportation is widely available, cheap, and easy to use in Madrid to get to the start of the food tour. You can opt to use the metro or use buses. I recommend getting a transportation card for the day which costs €8.50. You can buy these in the metro stations. 

Where to Stay in Madrid

When visiting Madrid, you will want to stay near the Grand Via or Plaza Mayor. We opted to stay at the Petit Palace Posada del Peine which ended up being a great location.

Exploring Madrid with Secret Food Tours

The highlight of my visit to Madrid was the tour we did with Secret Food Tours .

Renee and I met our guide Jorge, complete with an unmissable Orange Umbrella and a massive smile on his face next to the statue of the bear and the strawberry tree.

Jorge handed us a bottle of water each, and along with a couple from Montreal we were immediately leaning things about Madrid. Secret Food Tours aren’t just about the food!

We rubbed the bear’s left hind leg for good luck and set off through Sol on our 3.5 hour food tour of the city.

Cakes and Coffee

Our first stop was a El Riojano, a business which has been in operation in the same spot and run by the same family since 1855. The shop front is small and unassuming, yet behind there is a hidden back cafe area.

We ordered coffees and thick hot chocolates (unfortunately the lemon frappe they make daily was not yet ready) which we were served with a slice of Ponche Segoviano, a sweet cake originating from the 13th century in Segovia.

As we left Jorge told us to always look up in Madrid as the buildings are beautiful and easily missed. One such example that we passed was Posada del Peine, the oldest hotel in the city.

Our second stop was for Jamon.

It takes skill to carve a Jamon leg by hand and keep it straight. At a gorgeous shop we tasted two types – one much dearer than the other as although they were the same type of black pig, cured the same, one had spent the last three months of it’s life only being fed acorns which intensifies the flavour. It takes 4-5 years to cure a leg of Jamon and it is so simple – just curing it in salt, no chemicals.

I don’t usually eat meat but gave it a try – I’d tasted nothing like it before!

The most typical thing to eat in Madrid?

Apparently the most typical thing to eat in Madrid is a calamari sandwich. Bocadillos Calamares makes around 1500 per day which they sell for €2.90. It was the kind of place that as a tourist I’d feel to intimidated to go into – it was small, appeared to be a takeaway shop with only tiny stools and tiled walls with quotes in Spanish (which turned out to be amusing idioms).

Before our next food stop we passed by the world’s oldest restaurant, Sobrino de Botín which we were lucky enough to peer into as the couple we were with wished to make a reservation for dinner. It’s been open since 1725 and still has it’s original oven. Their specialty, and must-order dish is baby pig which is cooked with only salt and water.

A ‘Secret’ Dish

We stopped at a tavern, typical to those in basque county for a ‘secret dish’ which you’ll have to take the Madrid Secret Food Tour to find out about!

My mind was blown when we learnt that the locals don’t actually drink Sangria. Their preference is for something called Tinto De Verano which translates as ‘Summer Red Wine’ and consists of (cheap) red wine and lemon fanta.

La Mi Venta

Our final stop was La Mi Venta which translates as ‘what I do’ or ‘what I sell’. It was another narrow, small eatery where we had a Spanish Vermouth called Yzaguirre made from red wine, gin, caramel, spices and cinamon, which served simply on the rocks with a wedge of orange. It was accompanied by bread, olives, cheese and the most amazing olive oil called Oro Bailen which caused us to exclaim outloud upon our first taste of it.

It’s so interesting to see how different the food tours are in Madrid. Really shows the variety of the food scene in the city. I really enjoyed the food tour as a tasty way to learn more about the local cuisine in Madrid. I had no idea that the Calamari Sandwiches were so popular though.

I had no idea about their popularity either! Madrid is nowhere near the sea so you wouldn’t guess calamari as the key ingredient in the city’s ‘must eat dish’. Jorge explained that calamari has a longer shelf life compared to other seafood products so this is why.

I don’t think I would ever have thought to put calamari in a sandwich!

In New Zealand we do put whitebait or muscle fritters in white bread and butter sandwiches so I guess I immediately understood calamari would work. Something similar would be sold at least $10 at home though!

I tried the secret food tour taking you around a capital city – it should be on everyone’s bucket list

IT’S too much to resist the temptation of the warm, sweet treat in front of me.

Just one bite into its syrupy crust, dolloped with mountains of cream and oozing from its custard-like centre, has my mind settled. This is my new favourite dessert.

I cannot tell you what it is, though. That would ruin the secret.

I’m at the penultimate stop on my Secret Food Tour of London’s Soho .

“One dish is always kept a secret on our tours,” grins Oliver Mernick-Levene, co-founder of the tour company.

As we mop the sticky remainders of the surprise dish away from our chins, he tells me that he wants to give customers a flavour of something they may not have tried before, that still remains relatively undiscovered, even among the locals.

He has certainly hit the brief. As a travel writer who has tucked into local grub from all corners of the world, I cannot say that I have ever tried this before.

But this moreish sweet treat may not remain a secret for long.

What was once a small, quiet stall in London’s bustling Borough Market ten or so years ago now attracts a snaking queue at all hours of the day.

Crafted by a local

This stall is the home of Secret Food Tours’ first ever secret dish and one of the birthplaces of the company – formed in 2013 by Oliver and his Paris-based pal Nico Jacquart, who began sharing restaurant and market favourites with friends and travellers in their home cities.

None of the restaurants we visit on our three-to-four-hour trip are chains, except a London-centric one, which we swing by for crispy truffle arancini and juicy meatballs washed down with a crisp prosecco , all because it’s simply an institution in the capital.

The same goes for the 70 other countries where these food tours operate.

This is down to the fact that each one is thoughtfully crafted by a local who knows all the secrets of their hometown – and not just the foodie ones either.

I cannot tell you how many times I have marched through the streets of Soho on my way to a dinner date, oblivious to the history of the cobbled paving stones I’m stomping on, or the wonky shops that have been transformed into trendy cafes and art galleries.

With almost 100 tours spread across America, Europe, Australia and Asia, it’s certainly something that can be added on to any getaway

But in between nibbles, our guide Charlie tells us how Soho became the foodie destination it is today.

My favourite tale is about one of Queen Anne’s footmen, William Fortnum, who melted down the remnants of old palace candles to sell on so he and his landlord Hugh Mason had enough money to open a market stall, where you could buy the first ever scotch egg.

And did you know that Berwick Street market was the first place in London to sell tomatoes on the street?

Or that Ronnie Scott’s jazz club is where Jimi Hendrix played his last ever gig in 1970?

With almost 100 tours spread across America, Europe, Australia and Asia, it’s certainly something that can be added on to any getaway.

Personally I would book for the start of a holiday, so you can utilise the wealth of tips you will come away with.

Charlie was bursting with enthusiasm for the city he was born in and shared with us some of his favourite places not featured on the tour (those have been earmarked in my notebook for another time).

Now the only thing left to do is devour the remnants of the food I have collected.
