16 BEST Things To Do in Riyadh as a Tourist and Like a Local in 2024!

Categories Middle East , Saudi Arabia

From my experience of being a visitor and tourist in Riyadh since the Kingdom opened up to tourism, there are 2 ways to see Riyadh when looking into things to do in Riyadh – as a tourist and as a local .

Whilst there are a few tourist attractions in Riyadh that I do recommend you visit, I suggest, in order to really enjoy your time in Riyadh, you shouldn’t focus on these too much as part of your things to do in Riyadh.

Instead, attend local events that are on, have a walk around a shopping mall and visit areas which are full of cool cafes and restaurants to really experience local Saudi life .

In this Riyadh Travel Blog, I’m going to give you information about Riyadh City, things to do in Riyadh, places to visit in Riyadh and entertainment places in Riyadh so you can plan your Riyadh itinerary no matter whether you are spending 2 days in Riyadh or 1 week in Riyadh! Yallah!

Things To Do in Riyadh

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia and Riyadh in particular is an ever-changing country and city ! New things are being built and culture is changing every day!

Before you go, be sure to read my guide to Riyadh to help you when you arrive, and what to wear as a woman in Saudi Arabia !

The most important thing though is to keep an open mind and expect to be surprised by how comfortable you feel in Riyadh and the activities offered as it might differ from what you think… or have been told!

Things To Do in Riyadh As a Tourist

Here are the top things to do in Riyadh which are aimed at tourists. These are great things to do in your first few days in Riyadh to have an aim of where to go as you get to know the city and culture.

Find What You're Looking For Easily Here!

1. Skybridge in Kingdom Tower

This is top of the list of the best things to do in Riyadh!

For the best viewpoint in Riyadh, you have to head up the Kingdom Tower to the Skybridge ! The Kingdom Tower is the most famous-looking building in Riyadh, (it looks a bit like a bottle opener which is ironic considering Saudi is a dry country!).

It has a big shopping mall in it and the 360 view from the  Skybridge is beyond impressive making it the top  things to do in Riyadh in my opinion!

The weather in Riyadh is usually clear but often it can be hazy and dusty from sand so try and go when the weather is clear to get the best view of Riyadh!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, Kingdom Tower in Riyadh

2. National Museum of Saudi Arabia

This may be the cheapest place to visit in Riyadh at only 10SAR (that’s cheaper than a coffee) and it has to be the best museum in Riyadh because The National Museum of Saudi Arabia gives you so much information on the history of Saudi Arabia.

It’s pretty big over 2 floors so it takes 1-2 hours to walk around and makes for a great place to visit in Riyadh when you’re thinking of where to go in Riyadh.

I would recommend going here on your first day in Riyadh as part of your things to do in Riyadh to help give you an understanding of the history of the Kingdom and the religion of Islam.

3. Masmak Fort

For some more history on Riyadh and Saudi Arabia head to Masmak Fort which is free to enter and one of the really good things to do in Riyadh.

For an easy and budget-friendly way to explore Al Masmak and the surrounding area, check out this Self-Guided Walking Tour for Al Masmak on Riyadh’s History via Viator !

Tours in Riyadh to book to help you see the area with a group and guide:

4. Deera Square

Across the road from Masmak Fort is Deera Square. To tourists, this is also known as ‘chop chop square’ as it’s where public executions were held in Riyadh so it should be on your Riyadh sightseeing list. However, I wouldn’t talk about this too much with locals…

There are lots of streets around Masmak Fort and Deera Square that you can walk around with lots of local shops. I do recommend going here during the day as I felt a little uncomfortable here at sunset when it was dark on my own.

Note- The National Museum of Saudi Arabia and Masmak Fort are close together so I recommend seeing both of these Riyadh attractions at the same time on your Riyadh itinerary.

You will need to get a taxi between them as you can’t walk between them, Riyadh is not pedestrian-friendly!

This is another self-guided audio walking tour you can book to help see and understand Historical places in Riyadh like Deera Square!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, Deera Square

5. Old Diriyah

Diriyah is Riyadh’s Historic Neighbourhood in the West of the city and one of the top places to visit in Riyadh and things to do in Riyadh.

When I visited Riyadh, Diriyah has been closed to the public due to the other events happening in Riyadh, so I would recommend checking on Visit Saudi’s website here whether it’s open before going there.

To help you see Old Diriyah, check out this Half-day Ad Diriyah Tour from Riyadh with a local

6. Najd Village

For the best restaurant in Riyadh for tourists, visit Najd Village for Lunch or Dinner to experience the heritage of Saudi Arabia without leaving the city because  Najd Village offers traditional local food and a traditional interior .

7. Edge of the World & Second Edge of the World

This is by far the best and easiest day trip from Riyadh. As a foreign tourist to Riyadh, you can drive yourself to the Edge of the World ( check out prices for car rental in Riyadh here )  as it is located on Google maps, however, once you leave the main road there is no road, only the desert, so you do have to be careful.

There are many group tours to the Edge of the World like this on Viator , and tours to the Second Edge of the World like this which is a new tour to be run in Riyadh!

For more options, see my full Edge of the World post here !

We met in the North of Riyadh and were all taken into the desert by bus. We visited the Edge of the World and had a few hours walking around and taking photos.

After sunset, we went to the Riyadh Hiking camp where we had a BBQ dinner and were able to chat to everyone on the tour with music and shisha.

We also got to ride quad bikes and visit a cave underground so it was a really fun afternoon and evening trip from Riyadh and definitely needs to be on your list of things to do in Riyadh!

8. Red Sand Dunes

Another easy day trip and one that you will need to join a tour for is a trip into the desert and red sand dunes just outside of Riyadh.

I joined Hike Mania Club.  We met in South Riyadh, got into the buses and drove to the desert! We spent 2 hours before sunset on a walk up and down the dunes before coming back to the camp where we had a BBQ dinner, listened to music and were able to chat and meet other people on the tour.

This is high on the list of my favourite things to do in Riyadh as it was so fun and so good to be in the desert!

Prayer Time in Riyadh

Something to note as a tourist to Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia, are the 5 prayer times . The first early morning prayer will not affect you but the other 4 will.

In Riyadh, most shops, cafes and restaurants will close during prayer time meaning you may be waiting outside until they open if you get there once the prayer starts.

The Prayer times do change slightly throughout the year so it’s best to google ‘prayer times in Riyadh’ in advance so you know when they are.

Things To Do in Riyadh Like a Local

Now for the best places to visit in Riyadh that locals visit. These mainly include shopping malls and the best places to eat in Riyadh too so be sure not to miss them and add them to your things to do in Riyadh!

This is a really cool complex in the financial part of Riyadh in the North of the city. There are a few food stalls outside and there is a fancy cinema inside.

I watched a film here at 00:15 which is a popular time to watch a film in Riyadh so make sure you adjust your sleeping schedule to fit in with Saudi time!

The 303 makes for one of the good  things to do in Riyadh at night and be sure to find the really modern-looking mosque in the area too!

Click here for the google maps link

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, The 303 Riyadh

10. The Zone

This is an area with lots of cafes and restaurants in it so you are bound to find something you’ll like. It gets busier in the evenings and weekends especially so it’s good to visit then to see what Saudis do on the weekend.

Greem Cafe is a Korean Cafe with a super cool 2D design that I recommend you visit and add to your list of things to do in Riyadh!

Click here for the Google maps location

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, The Zone Riyadh

11. The Boulevard Riyadh

Not to be confused with The Boulevard which is part of the Riyadh Season, this is an area with some nice restaurants and cafes and another place to observe local life all day and all night.

For a cool place for coffee visit Minyums !

Click here for the Google Maps link

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, The Boulevard Riyadh

12. Backyard

Another strip with lots of cool cafes, Kanakah Cafe is cool and decorated really nicely.

A few years ago it was a female-only cafe but has recently changed so men can visit and it has a nice atmosphere.

I know all of these cafes may not seem like fun things to do in Riyadh but remember that because Saudi is a dry country, instead of bars people spend a lot of time in cafes drinking coffee , so they are good places to visit in Riyadh to chill, see local life and start a conversation with a local!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, Back Yard Cafes in Riyadh

13. Riyadh Park Mall

Riyadh has a lot of shopping malls, most of the malls in Riyadh have rides and games in them making them some of the good family places to visit in Riyadh and places to visit in Riyadh with children.

Riyadh Park Mall is the most impressive shopping mall in Riyadh so if you only go to one, you should visit here.

14. Diplomatic Quarter

Also known as the DQ, the Diplomatic Quarter is one of the top things to do in Riyadh for ex-pats and places to visit for ex-pats in Riyadh as it used to be an area where only ex-pats lived.

Here is my full blog post on how to visit the DQ in Riyadh and things to do in the Diplomatic Quarter !

Now, it has all of the embassies inside and Saudis can live in the DQ too. The best thing about visit the DQ in Riyadh is that you can walk around it without the fear of being run over by a car !

Riyadh is not a pedestrian-friendly city so it’s great walking around the streets in the DQ and the walking trails in the Diplomatic Quarter and the walking trails in the Diplomatic Quarter are great if you need some exercise or want to go for a run.

You can easily spend a full afternoon here, it’s such a pretty area and there are cafes and restaurants too so you can stay for lunch and dinner. In my opinion, this is the best things to do in Riyadh for tourists!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, Diplomatic Quarter Walking Trail in Riyadh

15. Riyadh Season

During the Winter and into the start of Spring, Riyadh Season is on which includes Winter Wonderland, The Boulevard and many other events around the city.

These are events that have been set up for Saudi locals from Riyadh and other parts of Saudi to attend but also to attract foreign visitors to the Kingdom by offering more entertainment places in Riyadh and fun things to do in Riyadh.

During the Summer, Riyadh will have fewer events happening because the weather gets extremely hot and locals stay inside more.

But Saudi Arabia seems to be focused on providing as much entertainment in Saudi Arabia as possible so it is worth downloading the Riyadh Season app to check what is happening and speak to some locals about what entertainment in Riyadh is on, no matter when you visit.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog things to do in Riyadh, Winter Wonderland Riyadh, Riyadh Season

Did you know that up until about 2017 there were no cinemas in Saudi Arabia?!

Now that there are, going to the cinema is a popular activity and one of the popular things to do in Riyadh for locals, especially at night, and late at night.

You may not find this interesting, but like going to the mall and going to coffee shops, this is what Saudi’s do in Riyadh and if you want to experience the best of Riyadh, I suggest you join in on activities like this too!

Day Trips from Riyadh

What I really loved doing in Riyadh is heading out of the city on an organised tour from Riyadh.

I was surprised to see that most of the people on the 2 day tours from Riyadh that I did were Saudi but I really liked this because I was able to meet a lot of local people and it felt like a local experience, but as a foreign tourist in Riyadh, I was still welcomed onto the tour and I did meet some other international tourists who were travelling around Saudi Arabia too!

Note that generally, these organised group tours from Riyadh only run on the weekend (which is Friday and Saturday!) when locals are off work. If you want to go on a day trip from Riyadh during the week, you will need to book onto a tour like this:

To SEE my time in Riyadh, have a look at this YouTube video and the  others on my channel here!

This will give you enough things to do in Riyadh to add to your Riyadh itinerary.

Here are 10 reasons you should visit Riyadh.

10 Reasons to Visit Riyadh

King Abdullah Park in Riyadh, SAUDI ARABIA

Riyadh is a great destination for travelers who love to explore new cultures, try unique cuisine, and get off the beaten path.

With its bustling souqs, vibrant nightlife, and beautiful architecture, Riyadh offers something for everyone!

Whether you’re looking for an immersive experience in centuries-old tradition or just some good old-fashioned sightseeing, Riyadh won’t disappoint.

So is Riyadh worth visiting? The answer is yes and here are some reasons why we think it is worth a visit.

1. Visit a Beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site

UNESCO World Heritage site Ad Diriyah near the capital of Saudi Arabia Riyadh

Riyadh is home to one of the most stunning UNESCO Heritage sites in the world.

Diriyah, the first capital of Saudi Arabia, is a must-see for its historical significance. It was founded in 1446 A.D. by Muhammad bin Saud and served as the seat of government until 1818, when it was occupied by forces from Egypt. After a 30-minute ride from Riyadh, visitors will be in awe as the view of Diriyah comes into view. Its crumbling mud-brick walls, decimated mosques, and ancient ruins are the only reminders of its former glory.

The best way to get to Diriyah and learn about the history there is to book this half-day tour to Diriyah from Riyadh .

2. Explore the Desert Landscape

Riyadh Desert

The desert landscape around Riyadh is stunningly beautiful, with rolling sand dunes and Bedouin villages dotting the horizon.

We recommend you head to the dunes and rocks of Al Thumama desert which are perfect for an outdoor adventure. The best way to enjoy the desert is to book a desert quad bike and camel riding safari from Riyadh .

3. See the Edge of the World

Edge of the World Riyadh

The Edge of the World in Riyadh boasts dramatic cliffs (with a 1000-foot drop) and panoramic views. Positioned atop the escarpment, you can enjoy an uninterrupted horizon view. It might remind you of the Grand Canyon in Arizona

Sunset is the perfect time to immerse yourself in its magical ambiance.

To visit, I highly recommend booking a tour for a safer and smoother experience, considering the rough and perilous roads nearby. The drive takes approximately 2 hours, and there’s a lack of signs and lighting at night, so relying on professionals is the better choice.

You can book a popular Edge of the World day tour here.

4. Experience Arabian Tradition

Souks in Riyadh

Immerse yourself in true Arabian culture with visits to ancient souqs and Bedouin tents scattered throughout Riyadh.

Souks, or traditional markets, are at the heart of Riyadh’s culture. You can find everything from spices and handicrafts to jewelry and traditional clothing in these colorful bazaars.

The most popular souk is Souq-al-Zal, in the Diriyah neighborhood. It is the oldest souk and Riyadh and has the biggest antique marketplace.

Or head to the gold souqs in Al Batha and Bab Makkah for some serious bling!

5. Explore the Palaces, Castles, and Fortresses of Riyadh

Masmak Fortress in Riyadh

No visit to Riyadh would be complete without taking a trip to the historic Al Murabba Palace. This imposing palace was built in 1938 and offers visitors a glimpse into the royal past of Saudi Arabia.

Then there is the Masmak Fortress. This impressive castle was instrumental to the founding of modern-day Riyadh. It’s been carefully restored to its former glory, making it an incredible sight to behold.

And lastly, the Qasr Al Anakar (or Tharmda Fort) in Riyadh is a must-see! Built in 1724 AD, this palace has traditional architecture and stunning views to enjoy.

6. Experience the Saudi Arabia Maldives

With its clear skies all year round, Riyadh is perfect for sunbathing, swimming or just lounging around in the heat!

When visiting Riyadh, make sure to include a visit to Umluj Beach, also known as the “Saudi Arabia Maldives”, in your itinerary.

Umluj Beach boasts silky island sand, shallow shores, and crystal clear waters offering breathtaking views of the Persian Gulf.

7. Sightseeing in Riyadh

Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque near Dira Square in downtown Riyadh

From iconic mosques like Imam Turki bin Abdallah Grand Mosque to stunning parks like Murabba Historical Park, there’s plenty to see and do in Riyadh!

We recommend you visit the Al Masmak Fort , the National Museum, Deera Square, Al Rajhi Mosque, King Khalid Grand Mosque, and the Riyadh Zoo Monument.

Each of these places offers a unique experience that will help you understand the culture and history of Riyadh.

Check out other popular attractions in Saudi Arabia .

7. Perfect for Nature Lovers

Wadi Hanifah lake, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

For nature lovers, despite being located in a desert environment, there are many green spaces in Riyadh that create an oasis against the sand dunes around them – perfect for exploring on an afternoon stroll.

There are plenty of parks and gardens to explore in Riyadh. The famous King Fahd Park is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, with its beautifully landscaped gardens and tranquil fountains.

There’s also Wadi Hanifah Park, which offers fantastic views over the city from its scenic hilltop location.

8. Delicious Traditional Cuisine

Falafel - things to eat in Riyadh

Food lovers can satisfy their taste buds with the delicious traditional cuisines of Saudi Arabia, like Kabsa, Shawarma, Mutabbaq, Saleeg, and Falafel.

You can find these vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes in all the local restaurants and roadside eateries in Riyadh.

Dajaj Mashwi, Martabak, Tharid, Gurshan, and Hininy are other tasty Arabian dishes that foodies cannot miss while visiting this city.

Eating Customs in Riyadh

Generally, every Saudi feast begins only after the eldest member of the group starts eating. Utensils are not required for serving many Arabian dishes .

People use only their right hand for eating, as it is against Muslim rules to use their left hand for dining. Guests should thank the host for food before leaving the dining table.

9. Shop Till You Drop in Riyadh

Kingdom Tower - Things to see in Riyadh

Three world-famous shopping malls in Riyadh are Kingdom Center, Centria Mall, Al Faisaliah Mall or Star Dome, Granada Mall, and Al Nakheel Mall.

Tourists also enjoy visiting the souqs or street markets here, like Bisht Souq, Souq Makkah, Riyadh Seasonal Dates Market, and Souq Al Zel.

10. Visit One of the Oldest Geological Landmarks

Heet's Cave Riyadh

Heet’s Cave is a natural cave located 45 minutes southeast of Riyadh city, near Alkharj. If you happen to visit on a good day, you might be able to swim in the aqua-green, subterranean pool, however, I have heard of reports that recently the water is murkier with trash lying around.

So whilst it might not warrant a special day trip, if you happen to pass by, make sure to stop and check it out.

Even while religious pilgrimages often visit Riyadh, the city has a lot to offer interested tourists. This energetic city has a remarkable fusion of contemporary wonders, history, and culture that just begs exploration. All-inclusive Umrah packages from USA provide a stress-free and practical approach to completing this significant religious obligation for individuals organizing a journey. Generally speaking, these packages include transportation, lodging, guided tours of the holy sites, and flights. Choosing an affordable package frees your attention to concentrate on your spiritual development. Here we'll explore five of Riyadh's best sights to make sure your schedule pleases the senses as well as the spirit.

Ad Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Affirmed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic vibrant city offers a pearl of wisdom into the extended chronology of the country. See the remains of mosques, governmental buildings, and mudbrick homes, relics from a different time. Take in the At-Turaif neighborhood, a labyrinth of little lanes that highlight classic Najdi architecture. While the restored Salwa Palace lets guests go back in time and enjoy the beauty of a golden age, the Diriyah Museum offers perceptive displays of the growth and collapse of the city.

Cheap Umrah packages that are very good value are available to New York travelers. These packages assist pilgrims to complete the Umrah without going over budget by often including cheap flights and lodging. To maximize your vacation, look for offers that include extras like meal plans and guided excursions.

Soaring High with Kingdom Centre Tower

Reach unprecedented heights with Kingdom Centre Tower and take in breathtaking cityscapes. Known by many as "The Faisaliah Clock," this recognizable structure's sleek, contemporary style dominates the Riyadh skyline. At an astounding 302 meters high, the tower provides a range of activities for guests. In the costly mall at its foot, shop for expensive goods. Enjoy a fine dining experience at one of the tower's exclusive eateries. Get the most excitement by riding the magnificent Sky Bridge, a suspended bridge with expansive views of the city.

The National Museum of Saudi Arabia

Journey through the rich chronology and culture of KSA at the National Museum. Almost 15,000 entities from ancient to modern times are housed in this vast compound. See exhibits of customary weapons, clothes, and daily objects. All ages should find the interactive exhibits and cleverly chosen displays at the museum to be insightful and informative.

A Historical Retrospective of Masmak Fortress

History lovers should not miss the Masmak Fortress. Throughout Saudi history, this massive mudbrick castle was crucial. Constructed in the 19th century, the fort was an important defensive position that saw Ibn Saud retake Riyadh, hence launching the contemporary Saudi kingdom. The museum in the reconstructed stronghold now displays the occasions that preceded the conquest and unity of the kingdom. Climb the watchtowers for sweeping views, meander around the maze-like passageways of the fort, and learn a great deal about a crucial period in Saudi Arabian history.

A Snatch of Nature of Wadi Hanifa

At Wadi Hanifa, get out of the city and find a secret haven inside. Historically significant and with a varied ecology, this vast valley was formerly a major water supply for Riyadh. Discover the verdant palm trees, calm canals, and naturally occurring springs that provide a nice diversion from the scorching heat. Explore the past at the archaeological sites that are strewn around the valley, traces of past communities. With so many permanent and migrating bird species to be seen, Wadi Hanifa is also a birdwatcher's paradise.

Above the Top Five

There are many more things to do in Riyadh beyond these main attractions. Taste buds might be attracted by real Saudi food or by the city's developing international food scene. History, culture, the outdoors, or just taking in the lively atmosphere, Riyadh has something to offer everyone.

  • Arranging Your Trip to Saudi Arabia

Although Riyadh is a seasonal place to visit, the most suitable climate for touring is found in the freezing months of November through March. From main cities throughout the world, some airways offer direct flights to Riyadh.

  • At what time of year should one visit Riyadh?

November to March is when Riyadh is at its finest, during the colder months. The nice weather makes outdoor activities and sightseeing perfect. It is required of visitors to dress simply. An all-inclusive package may be booked online and with some travel agents. To make sure you are receiving the greatest price, compare many packages and read reviews. Travelers must try regional food such as falafel, a deep-fried chickpea ball, and mutabbaq, a spicy rice plate with meat.

A delightful sample of Saudi Arabian food is provided by these meals. Travelers may usually feel secure in Riyadh. To guarantee a secure and pleasurable journey, it is always a good idea to learn about local traditions and heed travel warnings.

The best coffee shops in Riyadh

By Scott Campbell

Sociale Caf Riyadh

Saudi coffee, known as gahwa, has long been a symbol of the Kingdom’s hospitality , poured since the 15th century from ornate dallah pots and shared among friends and strangers. Today, Riyadh’s fast-growing café scene pays homage to this deep-rooted tradition – while adding a contemporary twist.

Emanating from the busy coffee hub of Tahlia Street to chic neighbourhood nooks across the city, an abundance of cafés offers flavourful brews in sleek, minimalist spaces and cosy corners bursting with character. With hundreds of spots to choose from and more popping up every year, many led by local entrepreneurs (as well as global giants looking to make their mark among the caffeine crowd), the Kingdom’s coffee culture is booming. Here are Condé Nast Traveller Middle East’s top picks for the best coffee experiences in Riyadh .

A.O.K Kitchen

The limited edition Dolce Morsa coffee with thick camel milk cream steals the show on A.O.K Kitchen’s revamped menu, which features cool collaborations with Jazean Coffee, Sawani and SoMatcha. This buzzy brunch spot in King Abdullah Financial District skips refined sugars but makes up for it with a colourful collection of iced teas, infusions and fruit-filled mocktails — plus thick stacks of pancakes drenched in organic maple syrup and generous handfuls of fresh berries. Sip on signature drinks from Greece and Spain amid eclectic interiors by Princess Anoud Khaled Al Saud, featuring foliage-print banquettes, cane-backed chairs and mirrored walls under a canopy of gleaming white magnolias. Book well in advance to snag a table during the weekend rush.

Take a look at the ‘stranger drinks’ section for alternative coffees

Don’t expect “one coffee, please” to cut it here — the Brew92 team are serious about their beans. Trained to the Specialty Coffee Association’s exacting standards, they make regular visits to farms around the world to find the best flavours and strictly brew at 92°C in a bid to extract the optimum flavour profile from each roast. You’ll find all the classics on the menu (plus plenty of alternative milks for vegans) but the most interesting options are in the “stranger drinks” section — ice cream sandwiches dunked in espresso, cold pistachio lattes and crème-brulée brews.

A minimalist ‘deco temple of Saudi coffee

A minimalist ‘deco temple’ of Saudi coffee

Elixir Bunn

Terracotta-coloured arches inspired by traditional Islamic architecture frame sleek, honey-hued tables at this oasis of calm — a minimalist “deco temple” of Saudi coffee once lauded by Architectural Digest Middle East for its unique design. Elixir Bunn, brewing beans since 2014, serves up blends inspired by the distinct aromas of the Kingdom’s regions. The Western version bursts with the warmth of cardamom, cloves, saffron and mastic, while the light-roasted Southern blend delivers a subtly sweet profile with ginger, fennel and cinnamon. Pair your coffee with a dense slice of chocolate-flecked banana bread or seasonal sweets like Kohei-Ziri, a Japanese dessert marrying the sweetness of vanilla ice cream with the bitterness of espresso.

Half Million

Half Million

Even if you haven’t visited Half Million, you’ll have spotted its famous logo emblazoned on cups clutched by die-hard coffee fans across the city . Named after the initial 500,000 riyal investment by founders Meshari Alshehri and Abdullah Alrajhi, this homegrown brand has skyrocketed in popularity thanks to its fuss-free approach and easygoing service. It’s a hit outside of Saudi Arabia too, recently opening an outpost on London ’s Oxford Street. Swing by 24-hours-a-day for coffee, a simple falafel bagel or the irresistible mini caramel bites temptingly displayed on the counter. For a cosy treat in cooler months, the ultra-rich hot chocolate is a classic winter warmer.

A caf by day and a latenight mocktail bar after dark

A café by day and a late-night mocktail bar after dark

This VIA Riyadh café focuses on making a “positive impact” on customers, brewing UK-roasted beans with notes of praline, brown sugar and cocoa — or cups of Barry’s Breakfast Tea for those seeking a simpler start to the day. Dig into crowd-pleasing French toasts, granola bowls and toasties until sunset, when the pastel pink café shifts gear into a lively neon-lit mocktail bar serving patatas bravas, nachos and burnt labneh cheesecake. This transition, dubbed “the flip” by New York-born founder Ed Barry, quickly takes the space from laid-back brunching to late-night lounging.

Sociale Caf is a favourite with Riyadh's artsy crowd

Sociale Café is a favourite with Riyadh's artsy crowd

Sociale Café

Drawing in a young, artsy crowd and laptop-toting creatives, Sociale Café on Tahlia Street oozes rustic charm. Dig into beautiful açai bowls and sharing boards of grilled halloumi, stracciatella and zaatar-infused dips, or indulge in decadent desserts like pain perdu drowning in chocolate and fresh strawberries. The Instagram-worthy space, bathed in natural light from grid-like windows, is adorned with vintage light fixtures and lush greenery, complete with rough-hewn concrete columns and snug cushioned corners perfect for intimate conversations. The small outdoor garden, hidden behind a wall of plants, is perpetually packed (even during the sweltering summer) with friends catching up under the twinkle of fairy lights. Plus, the café frequently hosts live music events and showcases works by local artists under monthly themes like Bauhaus, Memphis and connections.

SoMatcha

After sipping her first sweet, grassy matcha at New York Fashion Week in 2018, Saudi beauty influencer Yara Alnamlah was hooked. Frustrated by the lack of quality ingredients back home, she launched the Kingdom’s first specialised matcha café in a stripped-back space at the Shorofat Park complex. Here, on tables dotted among potted plants and shelves of Japanese chasen whisks, emerald green ceremonial-grade tea takes centre stage in every form imaginable — from pure shots to floral lattes with rose petal infusions. Whether you crave it straight up or as a mellow, milky concoction, this spot has your matcha fix covered.

Urth Caff is a slice of California in Riyadh

Urth Caffé is a slice of California in Riyadh

Packed with organic options for vegans and the health-conscious (including surprisingly excellent plant-based chocolate cake), this bohemian café from California focuses on all-natural dishes free from artificial ingredients or refined sugars. Homely bread pudding breakfast bowls, hearty portions of lasagna and scrambles with eggs from vegetarian-fed chickens keep diners coming back, but it’s the commitment to coffee and tea that truly sets Urth apart. It all started in 1989 when Jilla and Shallom Berkman met a farmer from Peru who introduced them to rare heirloom coffee trees. Fast forward to 2017, and Urth Caffé opened its Riyadh branch, continuing the tradition of serving exceptional, earth-friendly dishes and drinks. The Manhattan Mudd, a smooth and complex African-Asian blend straight from New York, pairs perfectly with a slice of old-fashioned Granny Smith apple pie, baked fresh daily using classic recipes.

Undoubtedly,  Sadelle’s is a lot of people’s favourite spot in Riyadh for a number of reasons: it’s gorgeous, the food is always amazing, and the vibes are kind of unmatched. The restaurant’s decor blends modern and vintage elements to create an elegant but relaxed atmosphere. Salmon pink, soothing pastel blue and Kelly green shades, pillars and flooring inlaid with marble, and brass detailing offer a glamorous old-world European vibe. And if you’re already not sold, the matcha here is incredible too.

The house salmon, lightly cured and incredibly silky, seduces with subtlety, while the smoked Scottish is the way to go if you prefer a heartier taste of the sea. The bagels are chewy and dense, and the cream cheese spreads nicely and evenly, which makes for a delicious-tasting breakfast.
