2023 Porsche 911 Safari spy shots and video: High-riding sports car hits the 'Ring

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Perhaps the best sign the crossover craze has taken a step too far, Porsche is out testing a high-riding 911.

Porsche hasn't confirmed plans to launch a high-riding 911, though the automaker's sales and marketing chief, Detlev von Platen, said in a 2018 interview that such a car “ could be a good idea .” He even said such a car could be launched as a limited-edition model.

The testers are riding on much taller suspension than normal, which stands out in our latest shots thanks to a prototype for an updated 911 Carrera also present. The testers are also fitted with widened wheel arches and on some of them there is a prominent rear spoiler whose design has never been seen before. Some of the earlier testers also had thick foam lining the wheel arches, a feature typically seen when testing suspension systems. It helps the engineers determine how close the wheels get to the vehicle body. It's possible the foam was also added to hide whatever suspension setup was being used.

Porsche has been down this road before. Recall, the automaker launched the 911 SC Safari rally car in 1978. Porsche also built a trio of 911-based 953 rally cars which it entered in the Dakar Rally and eventually took home the victory.

The popularity of those early rally cars has led to some companies offering Safari-style conversions for old 911s . Several famous Porsche tuning houses, such as Gemballa , Ruf and Singer , have also teased their own modern successors.

Porsche itself investigated the idea of a modern 911 Safari with a secret concept developed in 2012 . Known as the 911 Vision Safari, the concept was based on the 991-generation 911 but never ended up receiving the green light for production. It looks like this won't be the case with the current 992-generation 911.

Porsche 911 Vision Safari (2012)

The 911 Vision Safari concept featured raised suspension and flared wheel arches, just like we see on these testers. It also had underbody protection and roof-mounted lights.

A Safari-style 911 from Porsche would likely be aimed at buyers in markets like China and Russia, where drivers are often faced with poor road conditions that make it difficult to daily a low-slung sports car, hence the popularity of performance crossovers in those markets. We’re sure a few would turn up in the U.S., too, given the popularity of high-riding models here. Heck, it could even prove popular in Porsche's home market of Germany where parking with two wheels up on the curb is often necessary. Currently we expect the car to be revealed in 2022 as a 2023 model. Lamborghini is also working on a similar concept, using the Huracan as the basis .

2023 Porsche 911 Safari looks production-ready in new spy photos

The high-riding 911 has been a long time coming.

new safari 911

A prototype Porsche 911 Safari looking mighty close to production-ready has been spied undergoing winter testing. Porsche's high-riding, thick-sidewalled, all-wheel-drive 911 prototype has been testing for what feels like an eternity at this point, but judging from what we see here, that wait is just about over.

Strictly speaking, not much has changed since we first shared photos of a lifted 911 testing more than a year ago. The latest prototype retains the earlier tester's bumper-exit exhaust (not the quad-tip, under-bumper setup of the 911 Vision Safari Concept Porsche showed last year) and the vaguely whale-tail-like rear spoiler, so the fundamentals were clearly in place long before the sheetmetal was finalized.

Porsche 911 Safari prototype

Other departures from the Safari concept include fully molded fenders (rather than bolt-on flares) and a set of mesh wheels instead of the Fuchs style. The concept's fender-top vents are also absent. If you ask us, the real deal also looks like it has a bit more vertical "heft" to it, likely due to sheetmetal designed for the real world, where aerodynamic performance and drag are inescapable considerations in the design process.

Porsche has been threatening to deliver a lifted 911 based on the Carrera 4 (the basic all-wheel-drive variant, for the uninitiated) for about a decade now . Indeed, when the Vision Safari was shown, Porsche acknowledged that it has been testing such variants in 2012 on the same gravel roads it uses develop the Cayenne and Macan SUVs. Given the apparent completeness of this particular example, we expect to hear something more concrete about Porsche's plans before the year is out. Stay tuned.

Porsche 911 Vision Safari

Year: 2012      Devolopment stage: Drivable prototype

“We believe that there is hardly any other car brand that can combine sports car and off-road characteristics as credibly as Porsche,” says Chief Designer Michael Mauer. In the 1970s, the Porsche 911 had already proved its astonishing off-road capabilities in the legendary East African Safari Rally. The race took competitors on a journey covering almost 5,000 km across the Kenyan wilderness. In 1978, Porsche works drivers Björn Waldegård and Vic Preston Jr. were right up in the leading group in their Porsche 911 SC Safari, which boasted increased ground clearance, all-round reinforcement and some pretty characteristic Martini stripes. They proved that the air-cooled 911 is almost as unstoppable in the desert as it is on a motorway or a race track. The images of these Porsche 911 Safari cars covered in the red dust of the African savannah, splashing through water holes and mud pools will never be forgotten.

And that is why the Porsche design team decided to pay tribute to the legendary off-road sports car with a contemporary re-interpretation in 2012. The Porsche 911 Vision Safari was created on the basis of the 991 generation of the 911. With its raised suspension, reinforced wheel housings, massive bumpers and a spartan rally cockpit with race seats and roll cage, it fully reflects its historic rally predecessor. The designers even planned a special shelf mounted above a fan behind the seats – to cool down your crash helmet between especially hot stages.

The Porsche 911 Vision Safari completed its maiden drive “Out of Africa” on the gravel track at the Weissach test facility, where normally the Porsche Cayenne and Macan prove their off-road capability. Chief Designer Michael Mauer was the co-driver in the Safari 911, with its uniquely soft suspension setup, when it performed its first drift and remembers enthusiastically: “I have rarely had so much fun before!”

Porsche's 911 4x4 spotted again

Porsche's 911 4x4 spotted again

► New 992 gets a bit taller ► Will the Safari edition make it to production?  ► All you need to know in detail

The 992 is here, but we’re still waiting on the GT2, GT3 and now this – an off-road-focused version of Porsche’s perennial supercar. First spotted where else, but the Nürburgring, late last year, it looked as though the ride height had been jacked up minutes before; its wheelarches were stuffed with foam to validate the gaps. Aside from that, it looked like any other 992.

However, our spy photographers have snapped all-new pictures of the 4×4 911, and it’s clear the project has moved on; the rear section around the numberplate has been designed to fit the loftier stance, and the foam is gone from the arches. Whatever Stuttgart has planned, it’s coming together quickly.

new safari 911

It looks to all intents and purposes like Porsche engineers are readying a Safari edition of the current 911, harking back to a 911 of the same name decades ago. It’s a long shot, but Stuttgart has given us special creations like the updated 935 Moby Dick. Let’s wait and see shall we?

Here’s How Much The World's Biggest Luxury Cadillac Is Worth Today

10 cheap american luxury cars with massive v8 engines, these are the cheapest used ford mustangs you can buy today.

When Porsche released the 911 to replace the 356 in 1964, not even the most optimistic fans at Stuttgart or around the world could have predicted that the famous model would still be in production over five decades later. Over many generations and many technological advancements later, the 911's iconic profile and rear-engined layout make it a stalwart and effective sports car to this day .

A brand-new 992-generation 911 might sound like a great way to spend a couple hundred thousand dollars, but so does a meticulously maintained, early air-cooled 911 with its smaller size and stylish design. The fact that values across the 911's history remain impressive is a testament to Porsche's engineering prowess, proving that manufacturers can keep a model relevant by sticking to the original recipe while adding improvements along the way.

But in modern times, the Porsche 911 has acquired another niche culture: the trend of taking a 911 and lifting it, bolting on mud flaps and rally lights, and calling it a Safari 911.

Exploring where the Safari 911 phenomenon began is really taking a walk through the model's entire history.

Going Back In Time

The 911 emerged onto the market in the early-1960s (it was originally called the 901 but that name had to be ditched to keep Peugeot happy) as a more powerful sports car than the outgoing 356, with a new design that took Porsche a step forward into the future. With a pair of cylinders added onto the 356's flat-four (which was very similar to a car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the Volkswagen Beetle), the 911 entered the market with a low center of gravity and curb weight thanks to its air-cooled flat-six.

The early 911 was yet another car that proved how much more fun driving a lightweight car is than a powerful car and it actually proved itself popular among privateer rally racers of the period, competing against the likes of the Alpine A110, with its similar engine layout. While Porsche was experiencing success on the racetrack with mid-engined cars like the 904, 906, and 917, the 911 steadily advanced in power and performance on the private market.

By 1984, Porsche had taken the 911 into the G-Body era and decided to modify an impact-bumper 911 into a car that could compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally. With an all-wheel-drive system to help counteract the pendulous rear end, the 953 was born—and then quickly replaced by the 959, which added water-cooled heads, a more advanced suspension system, and a pair of turbochargers. The 959 established a new era for Porsche , though it never competed in Group B before the class was terminated due to safety concerns. But Porsche took the learnings it had acquired building a rally car that ended up being the world's fastest production road-going car, as well, and dropped all the knowledge right back into the 911.

Taking On Rally Racing

For the late-1980s, Porsche introduced the Carrera 4 with all-wheel drive to the 964 generation's lineup—before the rear-wheel-drive version. For the 993 gen, the range-topping Turbo and Turbo S variants had received all-wheel-drive to help average drivers tame their massive torque in the hopes of coaxing down the old "Widow Maker" moniker of the 930 Turbo.

By the late-1990s, Porsche was hard at work transforming the 911's entire architecture—it was a move that proved highly divisive among Porsche purists, many of whom lamented the departure away from air-cooled engines towards water-cooling . And don't even get Porsche fans started on the 996 generation's headlights, IMS bearing issues, and all the shared interior design details with the Boxster.

But the 996 was nonetheless a faster, lighter car than the outgoing 993, with a lower center of gravity and lower production costs. The 996 gen also included a Carrera 4, a Carrera 4S, and the Turbo with all-wheel drive.

Looking back at Porsche's variegated history in both motorsport and over the 911's production advancements, the current trend of building Safari 911s starts to make a bit more sense. After all, the 911's entire rear-engine layout might seem like it's a group of nonsensical blowhards clinging to tradition more than actual performance but in reality, the 911's rear-engined layout makes it fun to blast around corners when there's a bit less traction.

Modern Rally Machines

A few Safari 911 builders, like Leh Keen in America and Tuthill Porsche in the UK, actually do build up vintage cars that can be enjoyed off-road today . But the other side of the Safari 911 story comes down, as most things do, to money. As Porsche 911 values have risen stratospherically, fans of the brand might brag that 75% of all Porsches ever built are still on the road—but that means there are a ton of Porsches on the road! And any Cars and Coffee event worth its salt will no doubt be chock-full of both vintage Porsches and modern GT3 RS variants.

So anyone who wants to stand out in the Porsche community—and who has the money and time to invest in such a project—can do much worse than building or paying someone else to build a rally-inspired 911. Just watch Matt Farah pilot his Safari 911 around the mean streets of Los Angeles for a look at how these cars are meant to be used.

Of course, most sports car owners never push their cars even close to the limit and Porsche owners are no different. Still, the thought of a classic 911 being pushed right to the edge of lift-off throttle oversteer on a gnarly rally stage is clearly enough of a dream to inspire these builders to keep on building.

New 2024 Porsche 911 Safari: Speculation and Overview

2024 porsche 911 safari: speculation and overview.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari – Porsche is a car brand with several models, one of which is the 911. The 2022 Porsche 911 has many variants: Carrera, Targa, Turbo, and others. However, we found that it used to be a Porsche 911 with a Safari variant. What is it like? Will they make it again?

We found that the Porsche 911 Safari existed in the 1900s, but we don’t know when the car was last launched. However, we hope that Porsche will relaunch a car with that name. To be more precise, we expect 2024 is time for the coming 2024 Porsche 911 Safari, and that’s expected to be pretty big news. On this occasion, we will speculate about the car that is expected to be present.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari

Exterior Design

In exterior design, it doesn’t look like it’s expected to differ much from the other 911s. However, it looks like a classic style with 4 headlights like the Safari, which used to be a good choice. This will be a significant difference compared to other Porsche 911. However, the style must be adjusted to look modern and fit today. Maybe that’s what we expected.

Interior Design

The car’s interior is also not expected to be much different from the others. With an attractive and sophisticated design and equipped with the latest features that support operations. The infotainment screen measures 11 inches, with various other features. The chairs used have a sporty design and are made of high-quality materials. It looks like 2 seats are enough, and there may be some variants with 4 seats.

2025 Porsche Cayenne Changes

Engine and Performance

We cover this section based on the 2022 911 Carrera GTS. The engine used is 3.0L with 4 cylinders. It can produce 473 hp @ 6,500 rpm, and 420 lb-ft of torque @ 2,300 rpm. Those are the standard specs we expect for this car. Even so, it is hoped that there will be a higher variant to make it more interesting, and people will have more variants to choose from.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The infotainment feature is essential for every car, including the 2024 Porsche 911 Safari. It looks like an 11-inch infotainment screen is enough. Of course, it can be connected to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Next are Bluetooth, USB port, Porsche Communication Management (PCM), and others. Just expect the latest and most advanced features of its time so that it can satisfy users.

As a car expected to come in 2024, we hope the 911 Safari is equipped with interesting features. That way, people will be more interested in buying it. The standard features that every Porsche 911 has, of course, must exist. Other features that make this car more attractive are also expected. For a list of standard 911 features, please search for more information.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari Pricing and Release Date

The cheapest 2022 Porsche 911, according to edmunds.com, is around $100,000. We think $135,000 is a fair price for the cheapest variant of the Porsche 911 Safari. That’s just my speculation. At the same time, some people may think that it is cheaper or more expensive than that. As for the release date, we think the 2nd quarter of 2024 is a good time.

New video and documents revive questions about Saudi role in 9/11 attacks

Smoke pours from the southwest corner of the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2011.

A newly released video and other documents are reviving questions about whether a Saudi national who FBI officials believe worked for Saudi Arabia’s intelligence service played a role in the 9/11 attacks.

The Saudi national, Omar Al-Bayoumi, was the focus of years of investigation by the FBI's San Diego field office because of his association with two of the 9/11 hijackers, Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, prior to the attack.

The video, which was unsealed in federal court last week, was a self-narrated video that shows Al-Bayoumi giving a tour of landmarks in Washington, D.C. The video was shot over several days in 1999 and included videos of entrances, exits and security checkpoints in the U.S. Capitol.

Federal officials believe that 9/11 hijackers planned to crash one of the planes, United 93, into the U.S. Capitol before passengers stormed the cockpit and forced it to crash in rural Pennsylvania.

Al-Bayoumi’s video of Washington was first aired by CBS News last week. NBC News and a San Diego area publication reported the existence of the video soon after the 9/11 attacks.

The video was one of the items investigators found in Al-Bayoumi’s apartment in the United Kingdom after the 9/11 attack. They also found a notepad of mathematical calculations related to flying an airplane and a video of a party in San Diego where the two hijackers and Al-Bayoumi were present.

The disclosures prompted some former law enforcement officials and the families of some 9/11 victims to call for further investigation.

“As a former FBI Special Agent who took part in the investigation of the 9-11 attacks (Flight 93), of which the majority of the terrorists were Saudi, I have so many questions here," William Evanina, who was head of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center during the Trump administration, posted on X this weekend. “Evidence is evidence. And it took a civil court case for the release?”

Evanina was referring to a lawsuit brought by the families of 9/11 victims after hundreds of pages of FBI documents were declassified and released in 2022. Attorneys representing the families filed lawsuits requesting that some of the underlying evidence used to create those FBI reports be released as well.

Two FBI reports that were among the recently released documents say that Al-Bayoumi was believed to work for Saudi intelligence. “Reliable assets and other members of the San Diego Muslim community believe Al-Bayoumi works for the Saudi intelligence service,” one of the documents says.

new safari 911

A separate FBI report describes Al-Bayoumi as a paid informant of the Saudi General Intelligence Presidency, known by the acronym GIP, and was paid a monthly stipend from the late 1990s to Sept. 11, 2001. Al-Bayoumi is believed to be living in Saudi Arabia.

A spokesperson for the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Washington said it was reviewing NBC News’ questions about Al-Bayoumi and his ties to Saudi Intelligence.

In late September 2001, the Metropolitan Police Service in the U.K. searched Al-Bayoumi’s apartment north of London and discovered the handwritten document that contained mathematical calculations related to flying airplanes. The handwriting specifically refers to planes and height.

In a report, FBI agents say they had a theory that the document and associated equations could be used to “calculate the rate of descent when flying a plane”

A pilot that FBI agents consulted in 2012 told them that the equations could be used to help fly a plane. “Given a distance from a target, the altitude at that location, and the current airspeed,” the pilot said, “one could calculate the rate of descent and plug it into the computer on the plane in order to initiate a descent to that target.”

The pilot said he had doubts that someone with limited training could calculate the latitude and longitude and then use those calculations to fly a plane to a target from 35,000 feet. Given the clear weather on 9/11 and at an altitude of 8,000 to 10,000 feet, one could see for approximately 100 miles and use the waypoints on aviation maps and the plane’s autopilot to calculate the distance to certain points, the report says.

The pilot apparently told the FBI that “when measuring the distance by hand between waypoints on these maps, one could be accurate” within half a nautical mile or better.

The FBI report ends with: “REDACTED could not think of any other reason for the equation given the parameters set forth on the document than to calculate the descent rate from a given altitude.”

Questions about whether al-Mihdhar and al-Hamzi were aided in San Diego have lingered for years. Both spoke little English and had no ties to the United States. Al-Bayoumi was seen with them on several occasions, according to the 9/11 Commission report and follow-up FBI reports.

Apple issues new google chrome warning for iphone users.

Apple takes shot at Google in very public way

When it comes to mobile browsers, there are just two that matter: Chrome and Safari have 90% market share between them. And so when Apple takes shots at alternative browsers targeting iPhone users, it’s taking those shots at Google and Google alone.

That’s the context behind Apple’s latest home town privacy stunt. As reported by SFGate , “Apple has switched one of its most prominent billboards in San Francisco to a new advertising campaign, and it appears to include a dig at a Bay Area tech rival.”

When Apple says Safari is “a browser that’s actually private,” it’s issuing a very blunt warning about its rival, the only other mobile browser of any significance.

The warning itself is no surprise—let’s be clear, if privacy is your priority it’s very unlikely you’re defaulting to Google Chrome. In its normal mode, tracking cookies are proving to have cockroach-like survival skills , while in its quasi-private “incognito mode,” it remains unclear quite how incognito that really is.

As ESET’s Jake Moore explains, “Google revealed earlier this year that it collects your data if you use Google Chrome, even if you use Incognito Mode. Personal data is so valuable to companies and when terms and conditions are so difficult to understand, it can be easy for users to simply allow companies to collect data at their will.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

“There’s no direct reference to Google, of course,” SFGate says of the new billboard, “but it’s impossible not to read the advertisement as anything but a thrown gauntlet against the Mountain View tech giant and its popular Chrome browser.”

Chrome’s tracking cookies will be here until at least early 2025. Recent reports suggest that some form of AI search across user search histories might follow, along with the so-called Privacy Sandbox—which is Google’s attempt to replace tracking cookies with something less awful, albeit its objectives remain the same.

On the spin side, Chrome is an excellent browser—fast, multi-featured and continually updating with new options. It’s not surprising it has approaching 3-billion users. But it has a complex engine that underpins its front-end, and that has been the subject of high-profile, exploited vulnerabilities, far beyond anything we’ve seen with Apple’s Safari in recent years. Last month saw four Chrome zero-days confirmed, and this month the browser’s extensions have come under attack for reported risks.

In reality, Google is in something of a bind. Safari is a browser whereas Chrome is a front-end for Google’s trillion-dollar marketing machine. It cannot turn off tracking by default without an alternative that seeks to track in different ways. Not only would that kill its own golden goose, but it would also cause uproar across the wider industry. Just look at the current back and forth on tracking cookie deprecation.

Safari is not perfect but has been designed with a different mindset. “Safari can also track user activity but offers better settings to protect users and their identities,” Moore says. It doesn’t have all the baggage to contend with and can go head-to-head with smaller competitors such as Firefox and Brave which push privacy as a USP.

This Chrome versus Safari trade-off is complicated, of course, by Google’s securing the default search slot on iPhones. But searching within Safari is a much more private experience than using the same search technology in Chrome.

Unless there are very specific reasons to use Chrome, iPhone users should indeed default to Safari. It is fairly private by default, and its privacy mode is much better than Chrome’s—it even deletes traces between tabs, within sessions, unlike Chrome.

“If you have an Incognito window open and you open another one,” Google explains , “your private browsing session will continue in the new window. To exit Incognito mode, close all Incognito windows.” Contrast this with Safari. “Browsing initiated in one tab is isolated from browsing initiated in another tab,” Apple says , “so websites you visit can’t track your browsing across multiple sessions.”

And that little detail neatly sums up the difference. This is an Apple philosophy more than anything else. While Apple’s Californian billboard might appear trivial, there’s a lot going on behind it.

A Tourist From New Mexico Is Killed by an Elephant in Zambia

The incident came months after another tourist was killed in Zambia when an elephant charged her group. One wildlife expert said the attacks were most likely “freak accidents.”

Two elephants walk across a two-lane road flanked by semitrailers.

By Sara Ruberg and Emily Schmall

A tourist from New Mexico was killed in Zambia when an elephant charged her, according to the police commissioner who investigated the incident. She is the second tourist to be fatally attacked by an elephant in the southern African country this year.

The woman who was killed, Juliana G. Letourneau, 64, of Albuquerque, had just visited Victoria Falls, a 350-foot waterfall that straddles the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and was heading back to her hotel on Wednesday when the group that she was traveling with encountered a herd of elephants on the road.

She and others stepped out of their vehicle to observe the animals, said Auxensio Daka, the police commissioner for the southern province of Zambia, in a telephone interview on Saturday.

“They stopped to watch the elephants, and unfortunately one of them charged towards them as they were standing there watching,” Mr. Daka said.

Mr. Daka said that Ms. Letourneau was taken to a clinic in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park near Livingstone, Zambia, where she was declared dead on arrival. Her injuries included deep wounds on the right shoulder blade and forehead, a fractured left ankle and a slightly depressed chest, according to a police statement.

No other injuries were reported from the encounter with the elephant.

Ms. Letourneau’s brother said on Saturday that he had no details about the incident, and declined to be interviewed. Other relatives could not be reached.

This past March, a 79-year-old American woman was on safari at Kafue National Park, in a central region of western Zambia, when an elephant charged the tour group’s vehicle, according to media reports .

However, human deaths are rare in encounters with elephants, according to experts.

“This is really a freak accident,” Nikhil Advani, a senior director at the World Wildlife Fund, a nonprofit that works on environmental protection and conservation efforts, said of the two incidents happening so close together. “It’s probably just some sort of coming together of unfortunate circumstances that led to this.”

The U.S. State Department said in a statement on Friday that millions of Americans travel to areas where there is wildlife every year, and that it is uncommon for elephants and other wild animals to attack visitors in Zambia.

Ms. Letourneau’s death was first reported by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation, a government-controlled news outlet, which said that human and wildlife encounters in Livingstone, the city where the incident occurred, were rising amid the country’s worst drought in four decades .

The climate conditions are worsening food insecurity in Zambia, which has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, and pushing wildlife into human habitats in search of food and water, according to the report.

Tourism to wildlife protected areas, which cover about a third of Zambia, and to the numerous lakes and rivers and lush valleys contributes an important share of the national economy.

Joyce Poole, a co-founder and co-director of ElephantVoices, a nonprofit that researches elephant behavior, said that keeping distance from elephants is the best way for tourists to stay safe. She added that there can sometimes be a “culture of aggression” stemming from a region’s history with elephants, as in Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, which experienced decades of war and poaching in the 20th century.

“Elephants responded in a certain way toward vehicles,” Dr. Poole said of her research findings from Gorongosa. “This behavior was then observed by younger elephants, imitated by younger elephants and sort of passed down through families.” There have been multiple poaching crises in Zambia, she noted.

Dr. Poole said that finding “a reputable company and drivers who are not just racing around to get the best shot” would be a good way for visitors to ensure safety.

Visitors to wilderness areas should also be wary and admire the animals from afar, experts say.

“As with all wildlife, like if you keep safe distance from them, they are not looking to disturb you or interact with you,” Dr. Advani said.

911 call details Wilmington stabbing leading to attempted first-degree murder charges

new safari 911

The release of the audio from a 911 call and a computer dispatch record provides additional details regarding an incident that resulted in one man facing first-degree attempted murder charges in Wilmington.

On June 20, 44-year-old Luat Van Tran was arrested at 1703 Covey Lane in Wilmington and charged with attempted first-degree murder, injury to personal property, and resist/delay/obstruct public officers.

Audio from the 911 call provides insight into what took place at the Wilmington residence.

"Somebody was stabbed by a family member," the caller said. "They came over to my yard. We found him in my yard."

The caller estimates that the age of the victim is a male approximately 40 or 45 years old, adding the victim is awake and breathing.

The 911 operator asks the caller if the assailant is still nearby.

"I think so but I'm not sure (because) I'm not sure he did it. I'm not really understanding the language," the caller said. The caller then confirms that the victim is bleeding "but not really bad" from a wound to the upper left chest near the collar bone, noting that they do not see more than one wound.

The call concludes after approximately 2 minutes and 45 seconds when police arrive to the scene.

The computer dispatch record indicates that the "male that stabbed the other was in a red minivan" and identifies a possible suspect. Police located a vehicle matching the description and detained one suspect.

Van Tran faces additional charges of driving while impaired, felony speeding to elude arrest with aggravating factors, reckless driving wanton disregard, driving while license revoked impaired revocation, and two counts of felony probation violation, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office inmate search.

As of Tuesday, Van Tran is being held in the New Hanover County jail under a $520,000 secured bond.

Boy dies after being found unresponsive in shallow pool at New Jersey day camp: Officials

The child was transported to a local hospital where he died, the owner of liberty lake day camp said..

A lifeguard found a boy unresponsive in a shallow pool at a New Jersey day camp on Monday afternoon, officials said.

"We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken," Andy Pritikin, owner of Liberty Lake Day Camp, said in a letter obtained by USA TODAY.

The camp is located in Bordentown, a city in Burlington County, about 9 miles from Trenton. It is described as a "transformative summer camp experience teaching children skills of life."

"Our thoughts at this most difficult time are with our camper's family, friends, and loved ones- and we are respecting their privacy at this time," Pitikin continued.

Tragic drowning: 1 body found, another man rescued by bystander in possible drowning incident on California river

Staff removed the child from the water, called 911

The unidentified child was found during a swim period for the Freshman division, which is for young campers starting first and second grade.

The lifeguard and other staff removed the camper from the water to perform CPR and contacted law enforcement.

First responders transported the boy to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Pritikin emphasized that safety is the highest priority for staff members and camp attendees.

"We have three registered nurses on staff, 25 lifeguards certified in first aid/CPR/AED, and the Mansfield First Aid Squad located just down the street," Pritikin said. "Our goal is always to do everything possible to the best of our abilities to protect the campers and staff in our care."

Liberty Lake Day Camp is working with a licensed clinical social worker to counsel children if needed.

iOS 18 Safari — biggest new features for your iPhone

Highlights and a redesigned Reader add some smarts to Safari on your iPhone

iOS 18 logo on an iPhone 15 Pro

Safari, Apple's built-in web browser across its different devices, won't get a radical overhaul as part of iOS 18 . But even just two big changes to the iPhone's default browser hint at Apple's larger strategy of leaning into machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Both major additions to Safari in iOS 18 promise to skim web pages and pull out the details you need. The idea, explains Beth Dakin, Apple's senior manager of Safari software engineering, in Apple's WWDC 2024 video is to offer "easier ways to discover content and streamline your browsing."

Even better, while the new Safari features do turn to machine learning, they're not part of the Apple Intelligence capabilities being introduced across Apple devices later this year. That means Safari's improvements will be available on more phones than just the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max , plus whatever iPhone 16 models come out later this fall.

With that in mind, here's what to expect from iOS 18 Safari once you upgrade to the new iPhone software, whether that's when the full version comes out later this year or Apple makes the iOS 18 public beta available in July.

iOS 18 Safari: Highlights

Highlights feature in iOS 18 Safari

Think of Highlights, the biggest of the two improvements to iOS 18 Safari, as a kind of hyper-focused summary tool. Instead of merely summarizing what's on the page, though, Highlights uses machine intelligence to identify the key bits on information on a particular page and calls them out in a pop-up window as you browse.

An example Apple uses throughout its iOS 18 preview shows a web page for a hotel where Highlights has called up a window showing the hotel's location on a map, plus quick links for driving directions or placing a call to the hotel. Other examples of Highlights include Wikipedia summaries of a person, playback links for songs, or summarized reviews for a movie or TV show.

It's unclear from Apple's demo whether Highlights appear automatically in Safari, or if you need to tap a button to get the Highlights window to pop-up. Footnotes on Apple's iOS 18 summary page indicate that the feature will only work with U.S. English sites, at least initially.

iOS 18 Safari: Reader

Reader in iOS 18

The Reader tool in iOS 18 Safari also picks up some summarization skills, giving you the opportunity to read a quick overview of a web page when you switch to Reader mode. Reader takes things a step further by generating a table of contents for a web article that lets you see how a page is organized. Presumably, you'll also be able to jump to specific sections of the article.

Galaxy AI tools on board the best Samsung phones add summarization features, so it's good to see them get baked into iOS 18 as well. A concise summary of a web page that you've stumbled upon can give you a better idea of what an article is about, while a table of contents can help you more easily drill down to the parts of a topic that interest you.

The summarization tools in Reader appear to be limited to English in the initial iOS 18 release, though regional support is far more extensive. Besides the U.S., Apple promises availability in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K.

Other Safari changes beyond the iPhone

Safari preview at WWDC 2024

Safari is available across Apple's different platforms, and there are some improvements coming to the web browser that are available for Safari on other devices. Specifically, Mac users who upgrade to macOS Sequoia will get a new way of watching web-based videos with a new Video Viewer that automatically detects when there's video on a page. Video Viewer breaks that out into a separate window with its own playback controls; click away, and the viewer becomes a separate picture-in-picture window.

Along with the Highlights and Reader additions, Safari on macOS Sequoia also promises performance improvements. In fact, Apple says the updated Mac version will be the world's fastest browser, with up to four hours more battery life than Google's Chrome browser on streaming video.

iOS 18 Safari outlook

Safari's seen more substantial changes in previous iOS updates, but that's not to dismiss the importance of what Apple's doing in iOS 18. With both Highlights and Reader leaning heavily on machine learning to power their new summary tools, iOS 18 Safari offers a taste of what Apple hopes to deliver throughout the iPhone, only without the stringent system requirements that the Apple Intelligence features demand.
