Winslet told the outlet she trained and learned how to free dive ahead of the film, which allowed her to remain underwater for seven minutes and 14 seconds.

Her time officially broke a record set by Cruise, who held his breath underwater for six minutes while filming "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" in 2015.

"Poor Tom," the actress told USA Today. "I mean, I don't know Tom at all – I've never met him in my life – but I'm sure he's getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record. I loved it, though. ... I was amazed how good I was at it and how I just kept getting better."

In the same interview, Weaver – who appeared in both "Avatar" films – added that she held her breath for six minutes and 30 seconds.

"We were delighted for Kate that she did that," Weaver said. "My husband (theater director Jim Simpson) and I both did 6 ½ minutes, which was astonishing to us and our teacher, Kirk Krack, who teaches the Navy SEALs. Everyone had a personal best."

Kate Winslet broke Tom Cruise's underwater filming record on Avatar 2 set without realizing it

kate winslet breaks tom cruise record

Does Kate Winslet get to join the Impossible Mission Force now?

We've known for a while now that the actress held her breath for more than seven minutes while shooting underwater scenes for Avatar 2 . But Winslet didn't realize — nor did anyone else until recently, apparently — that this means she held her breath longer than Tom Cruise on the set of Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation , previously considered the record for underwater breath-holding on screen .

Cruise trained extensively to hold his breath for six and a half minutes to film an underwater stunt for the blockbuster, which means Winslet bested him by about 45 seconds. However, the Titanic actress was unaware that this feat had become public until a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight .

"It's so funny because I don't really read reviews or media things. I'm not on Instagram, like I'm just completely disconnected from that part of my life," Winslet said. "So all of this week and the week before, I've had people coming up to me at work saying, 'Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!' And I'm going, 'What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'"

"It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again," she added. "That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it."

Winslet had previously revealed the seven-minute stat in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , noting, "I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar , and that was just incredible. My longest breath hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff."

The actress can currently be seen alongside Saoirse Ronan in the Oscar contender Ammonite , now playing in select theaters. “Everything comes from an extremely steady, still place,” Winslet told EW of her character, Mary, in the romantic drama. “I had to focus a lot on that because movement and expression for Mary is used as communication. I had to be very careful about when those moments would be. We have to really choose when she would smile. She doesn’t smile that often. When she does, it’s an important vocal moment that comes from that expression of joy.”

Avatar 2 , which recently "100 percent" completed filming , is currently scheduled to hit theaters Dec. 16, 2022. However, as we've learned repeatedly, that date is very much subject to change.

Kate Winslet held her breath underwater for seven minutes and 14 seconds while filming the upcoming Avatar sequel

kate winslet breaks tom cruise record

Kate Winslet is "very proud" of herself after breaking a filming record while on the set of Avatar 2 .

During production on the highly anticipated sequel to the 2009 James Cameron -directed film, it was revealed that the 45-year-old actress held her breath underwater for seven minutes and 14 seconds, an achievement that beat Tom Cruise's previous record. Cruise, 58, previously held his breath for 6 to 6½ minutes back in 2011 while filming Mission: Impossible — Rogue Natio n, according to USA Today .

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about the exciting stunt, Winslet revealed that she wasn't even aware that her feat was made public.

"It's so funny because I don't really read reviews or media things. I'm not on Instagram, like I'm just completely disconnected from that part of my life," she told the outlet. "So all of this week and the week before, I've had people coming up to me at work saying, 'Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!" And I'm going, 'What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'"

And though Winslet revealed that she is very proud of how long she spent underwater for the movie, she also noted that she doesn't believe she would ever be able to do it again anytime in the future.

"It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again," she told ET . "That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it."

Winslet also added that her newfound skill is "one of the things I love about the job."

"We're very, very lucky as actors that often we have to learn a whole new skill," she shared.

Last month, and weeks after Winslet revealed she plays a "water person" in the blockbuster follow-up, producer Jon Landau shared a photo on Instagram of the actress filming underwater.

With Winslet seen wearing a motion capture suit with a long cape flowing behind her, the Oscar winner also appeared to be wearing weights to hold her down while she stood at the bottom of a pool.

"I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar , and that was just incredible," Winslet said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , which Landau, 60, quoted in his post.

Landau has also previously shared photos of Winslet and the franchise's other stars, like Zoë Saldana , Sam Worthington and Cliff Curtis, filming in the water tank.

That same month, Sigourney Weaver also opened up about the upcoming Avatar 2 , where she told T magazine that she "had some concerns" as she also filmed underwater scenes in a large tank with weights around her.

"I had some concerns," Weaver, 71, admitted while recounting her experience on the film's set . "But that’s what the training was for. And I really wanted to do it."

She continued, "I didn’t want anyone to think, 'Oh, she’s old, she can’t do this.'"

Weaver prepared for the role by taking diving lessons in Hawaii and Key West, Florida. She also trained with a coach who had previously worked with military divers and learned to hold her breath for more than six minutes with the help of supplemental oxygen.

Kate Winslet shattered a film record set by Tom Cruise after she held her breath underwater for seven minutes while filming a scene for “ Avatar 2 .”

The “Titanic” actress is re-teaming with director James Cameron for a follow-up to his massively successful 2009 film. The Oscar winner’s role in the upcoming blockbuster sent her back to the water, where she underwent extensive training and ended up breaking a record that Entertainment Tonight notes was previously set by Cruise in “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” by one minute.

"It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again," Winslet told the outlet . "That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it."

The actress went somewhat viral in late October after the film’s official Twitter account shared a photo showing her in a dive tank filming an underwater scene. However, because she’s not really on social media, Winslet had no idea that her record-setting shoot was even public knowledge.

'AVATAR' SEQUEL RESUMES PRODUCTION, PRODUCER SHARES PICTURE OF 'FIRST SHOT BACK' ON SET

“It's so funny because I don't really read reviews or media things. I'm not on Instagram, like I'm just completely disconnected from that part of my life," she explained. "So all of this week and the week before, I've had people coming up to me at work saying, 'Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!" And I'm going, 'What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'"

The actress previously broke down the filming process on “Avatar 2” in an interview with Collider in which she noted that thanks to her training and safety protocols on-set, she had no trouble getting into the water for the movie.

“I was walking on the bottom of the tank. That’s a big ceremonial sequence with those huge heavy wings. That was quite scary,” she said of the viral photo. “The thing is, when you can hold your breath for seven minutes, you become unafraid. Actually, strangely, I was able to rely on my own ability to hold my breath for that long. Somehow I was not afraid, at all.”

Cameron previously revealed that filming on “Avatar 2” is finished . However, he’s filming several sequels in the franchise at once and noted that “Avatar 3” is almost done as well. Still, the first sequel in the franchise is currently scheduled for release in 2022.

Kate Winslet told Entertainment Tonight this week she’s “very proud” to have beaten Tom Cruise ‘s record for the longest underwater breath hold in a feature film. Tom Cruise held his breath underwater for six minutes while filming “ Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” but Winslet beat him by over a minute, holding her breath for seven minutes and 14 seconds while filming an underwater scene for James Cameron’s “ Avatar 2 .”

“It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I’ll probably never be able to do it again,” Winslet said. “That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it.”

Winslet’s “Avatar 2” co-star Sigourney Weaver revealed earlier this year the “Avatar” cast trained with elite military divers in order to maximize the amount of time they could hold their breath underwater. Cast members wore weights around their waists during filming to keep them submerged underwater. Cameron filmed a majority of “Avatar 2” in giant water takes, and the longer the cast could hold their breath without returning to the surface for oxygen meant less interruptions in filming.

Winslet’s record-breaking breath hold has been circulating the internet for quite awhile, but she had no idea until her press tour for her new film ‘Ammonite’ started. As the Oscar winner said, “It’s so funny because I don’t really read reviews or media things. I’m not on Instagram, like I’m just completely disconnected from that part of my life. So all of this week and the week before, I’ve had people coming up to me at work saying, ‘Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!” And I’m going, ‘What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'”

Winslet held her breath for over seven minutes, but Weaver was no slouch either. The “Alien” favorite managed to hold her breath for six minutes while filming “Avatar 2.” Cameron’s sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 16, 2022. “Avatar 3” will follow with a theatrical release on December 20, 2024. The fourth and fifth films are due in 2026 and 2028.

Kate Winslet has said she broke Tom Cruise’s on-set record for holding her breath underwater while filming Avatar: The Way Of Water.

The English actress, 47, stayed submerged for seven minutes and 15 seconds while filming a scene for the highly anticipated blockbuster sequel.

She beat Cruise, who held his breath for six minutes during Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

Winslet, who plays Metkayina matriarch Ronal in the upcoming film, said she had video evidence of the achievement, which had been taken by her husband – who had sneaked on to the set during production.

Speaking at a global press conference ahead of the film’s launch she said: “I actually have a video of when I surface from that breath-hold.

“And the only reason I have it is because my husband snuck in.

“I said, ‘Please don’t come because I just don’t want you videoing. I’ll just feel pressure, just please don’t do that’ and he snuck in.”

She continued: “I have the video of me surfacing saying, ‘Am I dead? Have I died?’ And then going ‘what was it?’ – straightaway I wanted to know my time.

“I couldn’t believe that it was 7.15 but having been told it’s 7.15 – you want to know what the next thing I say is? We need to radio set.

“I wanted (Cameron) to know right way, that’s the first thing I wanted to do – it definitely wasn’t a competition.”

The sequel is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and sees Jake settle down with Neytiri and their three children in the Na’vis’ rainforest home.

Once a familiar threat returns, Jake, played by Sam Worthington, must work with Neytiri, Zoe Saldana, and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their planet.

On Tuesday, Winslet and her co-stars including Sigourney Weaver and Cameron attended the world premiere in central London for the highly anticipated sequel.

When filming underwater scenes, sometimes actors and stunt people are required to hold their breath for longer than usual. In the case of director James Cameron's upcoming Avatar 2 movie , many of the scenes seem to take place in the water .

Actor  Kate Winslet , who plays what is described as a "water person" in the movie, held her breath for an impressive seven minutes and 14 seconds. 7 Brilliant Stormlight Archive Theories We Hope Book 5 Confirms

Why channing tatum's patrick swayze movie remake is much harder than road house, henry cavill's highlander movie is very likely to avoid the mistakes of his other major reboot.

While filming for James Cameron's Avatar 2 ,  Kate Winslet held her breath underwater for more than seven minutes, beating a record famously held by Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation .  Before having his record broken, Tom Cruise held his breath for six minutes while filming an underwater stunt for the fifth Mission: Impossible movie.

Across their various social media pages,  Avatar 2 debuted a first look image of Winslet submerged in a large tank while wearing weights and filming a scene for the upcoming  Avatar sequel. Winslet did not appear in the first  Avatar  film, and based on the image shared, she appears to be playing some sort of marine life form with what look to be wings. Filming  Avatar 2 required much of its cast to shoot scenes underwater, and Winslet has gone all out preparing for her role and has described bits of her training in interviews. " I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar,"  Winslet states in an interview with  THR , " and that was just incredible."

Related: What Avatar Gets Wrong About Environmentalism (& How Avatar 2 Can Do Better)

According to revealed plot details,  Avatar 2  is set to continue  the story of Jake Scully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) as they travel across Pandora's oceans and come face-to-face with the sea-dwelling clan called the Metkayina, where they meet a Na'vi named Ronal, played by Winslet. Winslet shared more details about the sequence and how she overcame difficulties while filming it:

“I was walking on the bottom of the tank. That’s a big ceremonial sequence with those huge heavy wings. That was quite scary. The thing is, when you can hold your breath for seven minutes, you become unafraid. Actually, strangely, I was able to rely on my own ability to hold my breath for that long. Somehow I was not afraid, at all.”

Based on the circumstances, it makes sense that Winslet playing an underwater creature would result in her having to learn to hold her breath for considerable lengths of time. Evidently, she has put her newly learned talents to good use by helping herself overcome her fears. In Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , the stunt that required Cruise to hold his breath for over six minutes involved him being underwater while switching files in a security facility. During the scene, Cruise's Ethan Hunt is only supposed to hold his breath for three minutes, but his task becomes more complicated after he is struck by a mechanical arm sweeping across the security tank. For his stunt, Cruise was assisted and trained by divers and a military specialist who taught him tricks for holding his breath longer.

No matter the reason why each actor needed to hold their breath so long, both feats are incredibly impressive and indicate such a dedication to their craft that both actors have. Moreover, the tasks suggests a very healthy working relationship between actor and director.  Avatar 2 marks the reunion of Cameron and Winslet after she appeared in  Titanic   over 20 years earlier. It's clear that between Winslet and Cameron and Cruise and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation  helmer Christopher McQuarrie, both directors have tremendous trust in and respect for their stars and vice versa. The long-awaited Avatar 2 is set to release at the end of 2022, a whole 13 years after the first film. And based on all this information, it's clear that Cameron is asking for his actors' complete commitment to their roles, and Winslet is completely prepared to meet those expectations.

Kate Winslet Breaks Movie Record For Holding Breath Underwater

Ron Dicker

General Assignment Reporter, HuffPost

No scuba gear, no problem.

Kate Winslet held her breath underwater in a scene for “Avatar 2” that put stunt enthusiast Tom Cruise to shame.

Winslet’s time of 7 minutes 14 seconds broke Cruise’s unofficial movie mark of around 6 minutes filming “Mission: Impossible ― Rogue Nation,” according to “ Entertainment Tonight .”

“It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I’ll probably never be able to do it again,” Winslet told “ET” on Tuesday. “That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it.”

“Avatar” producer Jon Laundau previously posted a photo of Winslet at work in the depths.

View this post on Instagram Wanted to share this photo of Kate Winslet after reading her interview in The Hollywood Reporter: “I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar, and that was just incredible. My longest breath hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff.” She stops herself, afraid that she’s given away too much on the top-secret project. “Oh no, actually, I can’t. Yeah, I play a water person. I am a water person,” is all she will offer, instead shifting to praise of Cameron." A post shared by Jon Landau (@jonplandau) on Oct 26, 2020 at 9:44am PDT

Winslet has been mostly tight-lipped about her role in James Cameron’s sequel to his massive 2009 sci-fi blockbuster. She did allow in an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she is “a water person.”

Kate Winslet has smashed Tom Cruise's on-set record for holding his breath underwater while filming Avatar: The Way Of Water.

The actress, 47, who plays Ronal in the highly anticipated sequel stayed underwater for seven minutes and 15 seconds.

Tom famously held his breath for six minutes on the set of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

The average time a person can hold their breath for is around one or two minutes.

Kate was so chuffed with her aquatics skills that she got her husband to video the scene after she sneaked him on set during production .

“I wanted James to know right way, that’s the first thing I wanted to do – it definitely wasn’t a competition.”

The Avatar sequel has reunited Kate and director James Cameron on set for the first time since the 1997 blockbuster Titanic.

James admitted: “I’m still p***** off because I’ve been a free diver for 50 years and you smoked past me and everybody else.

Kate also joked that when coming back to work with James she had expected “the absolute best of everything” because of the director’s “precision” and “meticulous” thought.

The original sci-fi epic from 2009 became the highest-grossing film of all time and went on to win three Oscars for its stunning visual effects, cinematography and art direction.

It was set in 2154 and followed paraplegic marine Jake Sully, sent to the moon Pandora on a unique mission which becomes challenged when he falls for Zoe Saldana’s other-worldly blue princess Neytiri.

The sequel is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and sees Jake settle down with Neytiri and their three children in the Na’vis’ rainforest home.

On Tuesday, Kate and her co-stars including Sigourney Weaver and James attended the world premiere in central London for the highly anticipated sequel.

Avatar: The Way Of Water is due for release in cinemas on December 16.

Winslet broke Cruise’s record of holding breath underwater for over seven minutes

tabloid!

Hollywood actress Kate Winslet is poking fun at Tom Cruise after breaking one of his impressive records.

While filming ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, Winslet famously held her breath underwater for seven minutes and 47 seconds, reports People magazine.

The actress, 47, recently spoke with USA Today about training for her latest movie, and the moment she officially broke Cruise’s previous record after he lasted for six minutes while shooting ‘Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’ in 2015.

Though Winslet said that Cruise hasn’t reached out to her since she broke his record, she shared a message for him with the outlet: “Poor Tom.”

“I mean, I don’t know Tom at all - I’ve never met him in my life - but I’m sure he’s getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record,” she joked. “I loved it, though ... I was amazed how good I was at it and how I just kept getting better.”

According to People, Winslet also credited her husband Edward Abel Smith (formerly known as Ned Rocknroll) for helping her practice.

“Ned is an extremely fit, healthy person and is capable of a great many things,” Winslet shared with the publication. “He trained with me so that if I needed to practise without our instructor there we were safe because you really can’t do it by yourself. It’s the same as scuba diving: You have to have a buddy. It’s a sport, it’s a skill, and your body adjusts to be able to do that thing. So having Ned there was very important.”

Sigourney Weaver, who stars alongside Winslet in the follow-up to 2009’s original ‘Avatar’ film, told USA Today that she’s okay with Winslet holding the crown.

“We were delighted for Kate that she did that,” said Weaver. “My husband (theatre director Jim Simpson) and I both did six and a half minutes, which was astonishing to us and our teacher, Kirk Krack, who teaches the Navy SEALs. Everyone had a personal best.”

Kate Winslet Didn’t Give Her Best Performance in Her Highest Grossing Movie Titanic, 3 Movies Where She Raised the Bar With Her Acting

A ctress Kate Winslet is synonymous with the character of Rose from James Cameron’s disaster epic Titanic . The film saw her paired up with Leonardo DiCaprio in the doomed romance set aboard the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic in 1912. The film garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars and the film was the highest-grossing movie of all time then.

Despite earning billions, Titanic remains one of the many in Winslet’s amazing filmography. Though she is best known for her role in Cameron’s film, she has delivered far superior and mature performances since the big blockbuster. Here are three performances from Kate Winslet’s extensive filmography that are far better than Titanic .

1. Little Children (2006)

Directed by Todd Field of Tár fame, Kate Winslet plays a housewife who has an affair with her neighbor played by Patrick Wilson. Based on the book by Tom Perrotta, the film sees Winslet portray an unhappy housewife married to an older man with a p*rn addiction. The film garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, which she lost to Helen Mirren in The Queen .

“She’s hanged in the town square”: Kate Winslet’s HBO Series ‘The Regime’ Originally Had a Much Bleaker Ending Than Current Version

Despite being a commercial disaster, Little Children was placed among The New York Times critic AO Scott’s best films of the year, and Winslet’s performance received universal acclaim.

Little Children is available to stream on The Roku Channel.

2. Revolutionary Road (2008)

While Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet had a doomed but fairytale romance in Titanic , their reunion almost a decade later was not as ‘Jack and Rose ’-y. Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road sees the lead stars be stuck in a loveless marriage and deal with their eventual break. The film is based on a book by Richard Yates is set in the ‘50s.

“The fail that keeps failing”: Bill Maher Slams Timothée Chalamet, Kate Winslet and Others for Regretting Working With Woody Allen in Hottest Take of 2024

The film received positive acclaim from all around, most of them praising the powerhouse performances of DiCaprio and Winslet. Noted film historian and critic Roger Ebert gave the film four stars and appreciated the two leads for stopping “being actors and becoming the people [he] grew up around” (via Chicago Sun-Times ). Winslet received the Golden Globe for Best Actress for the film. However, she would go on to win the Oscar the same year for the film The Reader .

Revolutionary Road is streaming on Fubo TV and Paramount+.

3. Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (2004)

One of the most beloved doomed romances of all time, Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an amazing exploration of a tumultuous relationship with a magical realism setting. The film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as two lovers who later undergo a memory-altering process to forget each other after their breakup.

“I don’t want to stand here full-frontal n-de”: Kate Winslet Has a Major Regret About Her Past Intimate Scenes That Would’ve Never Happened Today

Written by Charlie Kaufman, the film sees an in-form Carrey and Winslet as Joel and Clementine as they navigate their intense relationship through their memories and deal with the end of their brief affair. Though it is often regarded as a huge change of pace for Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet’s performance again garnered her an Oscar nomination and universal praise.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is streaming on the Starz channel on Apple TV.
