Hurricane Helene: Airline travel advisories, flight delays, cancellations; what to know

ORLANDO, Fla. - According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Helene formed on Wednesday and made landfall as a powerful Category 4 storm in Florida's Big Bend region on Thursday evening.

The storm has impacted airports with strong winds, heavy rain, and the potential for severe weather. That could lead to flight delays or cancelations at Florida's major airports, including Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA).

Several airlines have issued travel advisories ahead of Helene, which typically allow people to change their flights or rebook them without extra fees.

Hurricane Helene prompts mass travel changes from airlines, cruises

Delta and more have sent passengers updates on flights impacted by the storm.

Hurricane Helene has prompted an array of weather alerts from airlines to cruises to ensure travelers can safely avoid areas where the Category 2 storm is expected to hit.

Airlines and cruises with routes in the region began taking preventative measures earlier this week and sent more updates about the potential impacts to itineraries on Thursday as the storm barrels towards Florida and the Southeast.

The National Hurricane Center said there is "significant additional strengthening expected before landfall" on Thursday morning, adding "there is danger of life-threatening storm surge along the entire west coast of the Florida Peninsula and Florida Big Bend."

Air travel impacted ahead of Hurricane Helene: Airport closures, airline changes

Nearly 900 flights across the country have already been canceled due to Helene, according to Flight Aware , with the biggest impacts seen in Tampa, Fort Myers, and Atlanta as of time of publication.

While all airlines are required to offer a full refund to customers if a flight is canceled or significantly delayed due to reasons within the airline’s control, per the Department of Transportation, that rule does not encompass weather-related delays or cancellations.

Florida airport closures

As of time of publication, three major Florida airports have announced temporary closures due to the storm.

Tampa International Airport suspended all commercial and cargo operations at 2 a.m. Thursday and said it will remain closed to the public until it can assess any damage after the storm.

Tallahassee International Airport and St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport have also closed and officials at each said they will be closed to the public until damage assessments are completed after the hurricane.

Other regional airports including Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport near Panama City Beach, Orlando International Airport and Jacksonville International Airport are currently open but have advised all travelers to check with airlines directly for the latest flight status and information.

American Airlines

American issued a travel alert for the Gulf of Mexico that affects 23 airports, with 16 of those in Florida, including Tampa and Sarasota.

For passengers who bought tickets of any fare class before Sept. 23 for travel between Sept. 24-27, the change fee will be waived. Changes must be booked by Sept. 27, and travel must be for the same travel origin and destination.

Delta Air Lines

The Atlanta-based carrier shared a weather advisory for Hurricane Helene due to forecasted path, explaining that "travel may be impacted to/from/through" 26 destinations.

"Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with One-Time Notification," the airline stated.

As of time of publication, the advisory covers 12 airports in Florida, including Jacksonville, Sarasota and Tampa, as well as select airports in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Mexico and Cuba.

Travelers scheduled to fly through one of the listed airports through 27 can rebook tickets by Monday, Sept. 30.

JetBlue Airways

JetBlue announced in a travel alert that flights to multiple Florida destinations have been canceled on Thursday and Friday: Tallahassee and Tampa, as a result of the airport closures, as well as Fort Myers. The airline also canceled all Sarasota flights for Thursday.

All JetBlue flights to Orlando and Jacksonville are operating at this time, as well as Atlanta, Savannah and Charleston.

The airline said it will waive change, cancel fees, and fare differences for customers with travel on Sept. 26-27. Flights can be rebooked by Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines issued the travel advisory "based on the forecasted weather conditions" where the carrier's "scheduled service may be disrupted."

It lists 10 Florida airports where scheduled service may be disrupted through Friday, plus Atlanta, Charleston, Charlotte, Greenville/Spartanburg, Myrtle Beach, Nashville and Savannah.

United Airlines

The Chicago-based airline listed eight airports in Florida, plus one in Cuba and three more in Mexico, that would be impacted.

Passengers who purchased a plane ticket before Monday, Sept. 23, for travel on Tuesday through Friday, Sept. 24-27, to, from, or through any of the affected airports can rebook without a change fee for travel through Friday, Oct. 4.

Frontier Airlines

The budget carrier issued a travel alert for passengers traveling in or out of six Florida airports on both Thursday and Friday, Sept. 26-27.

Royal Caribbean, Carnival and MSC Cruises change course, update itineraries

The sunshine state and its ports are at the center of the cruise industry, accounting for nearly 60% of all U.S. embarkations, according to the Cruise Lines International Association , where multiple sailing itineraries have been impacted by Hurricane Helene.

One ship is currently stuck at sea, while two more are skipping planned stops and multiple ports, including Port Canaveral, have closed as a result of the inclement weather.

Royal Caribbean

Five ships routes have been impacted, according to a travel update from the cruise line’s parent company Royal Caribbean Group.

Serenade of the Seas, which disembarked from Tampa on Sunday, changed both its Tuesday and Wednesday stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya for Freeport and Nassau, Bahamas. The ship is now set to return to Tampa on Sunday, two days later than originally scheduled delaying the next scheduled voyage that was originally set to leave on Friday.

"Due to Hurricane Helene and the planned closure of Port Tampa, our previous sailing will be delayed in returning," the cruise line stated . "As a result, our sailing will now depart on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 4:00pm. We kindly ask that you arrive during the arrival window you originally selected for an on-time departure."

Independence of the Seas departed Miami on Saturday and changed Tuesday’s planned stop in Cozumel to Nassau, Bahamas.

Mariner of the Seas, which left Saturday from Galveston, Texas, also swapped out Cozumel on Tuesday for a day at sea.

Wonder of the Seas will scrap most of its planned stops, skipping Cozumel, Roatan in Honduras, and Costa Maya. The ship, which left from Florida’s Port Canaveral on Sunday, will add stops in St. Thomas and St. Maarten instead.

Grandeur of the Seas will visit Nassau and Freeport in place of planned Wednesday and Thursday stops in Costa Maya and Cozumel. The cruise departed from Tampa on Monday.

Carnival Cruise Line

Both Tampa and Jacksonville ports closed Wednesday evening ahead of Hurricane Helene's projected landfall.

"Our Fleet Operations Center in Miami continues to actively monitor Hurricane Helene, which is now entering the Gulf of Mexico," the company said on its website . "The safety of our guests and crew remains our priority and our ships are sailing a safe distance from the storm."

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Fantasy left from Port Canaveral on Saturday and canceled its Tuesday call at George Town to replace it with a sea day.

The Disney Wish is the only ship that's currently impacted by the storm, a representative for Disney Cruise Lines confirmed to ABC News.

The ship was originally scheduled to arrive on Friday morning at Port Canaveral, which is currently "closed and has ceased all Port operations," with its next departure that was slated for Friday afternoon.

Now, the Disney Wish will arrive later than originally scheduled, the DCL representative said.

Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

Hurricane Helene: Airlines Issue Travel Alerts As Storm Heads For Florida

The storm is expected to make landfall near Tampa on Thursday morning. Airlines are letting impacted passengers change their travel plans without incurring change or cancellation fees.

NOAA expects tropical-storm-force winds to slam into Florida's Gulf Coast as early as Thursday morning.

H elene—now a Category-2 storm—is heading for Florida’s Gulf Coast and expected to make landfall Thursday as a Category-4 hurricane .

Maximum sustained winds have increased to 100 miles per hour with higher gusts. A category 2 hurricane has wind speeds between 96 and 110 m.p.h.

“Helene is moving toward the north-northeast near 12 m.p.h. This general motion is expected to continued with a significant increase in forward speed during the next 24 hours. On the forecast track, Helene will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico today and cross the Florida Big Bend coast this evening or early Friday morning. After landfall, Helene is expected to turn northwestward and slow down over the Tennessee Valley on Friday and Saturday,” the hurricane center’s 8 a.m. ET advisory said.

Hurricane Helene is expected to slam into Florida's Gulf Coast as a Category 4 storm on Thursday.

The Department of Transportation requires all airlines to offer customers a refund if their flights are canceled or significantly delayed due to reasons within the airline’s control. But that rule does not pertain to weather-related delays and cancellations.

On Wednesday, two of Florida’s larger Gulf Coast airports announced temporary closures due to the storm. Tampa International Airport said it would suspend commercial and cargo operations beginning at 2 a.m. on Thursday. St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport also announced that its terminal building “will close after the last flight arrives on Wednesday, September 25th” with plans to reopen on Friday. Orlando International Airport is currently open and operational, but may have delays or cancellations.

Hurricane Helene: Airline Travel Advisories

In advance of the storm making landfall, major U.S. airlines are already issuing travel waivers allowing passengers flying in or out of impacted airports to rebook without paying the fare difference. For consumers looking to change travel plans or recoup travel expenses, much will depend upon the airline, itinerary and, in some cases, whether a travel insurance policy was purchased.

American Airlines has two travel alerts . The first covers 16 airports in Florida, three in Cuba, two in Mexico, and one each in Alabama and the Cayman Islands. This alert covers flights in or out of impacted airports Tuesday to Friday, September 24-27, which can be rebooked for flights by Friday, October 4.

A second alert covers 17 airports in the Southeast, spanning Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee. Passengers ticketed to fly Wednesday through Saturday, September 25-28, in or out of the affected airports, can rebook at no extra charge for travel through Saturday, October 5.

Delta Air Lines has a travel advisory covering 25 airports, including 12 in Florida and six in Georgia. Travelers scheduled to fly through the designated airports Wednesday through Friday, September 25-27, can rebook tickets on flights for travel by Friday, October 4.

United Airlines has issued a travel alert impacting 19 airports, including eight in Florida. Passengers who bought a plane ticket before Monday, September 23 for a flight traveling Tuesday through Friday, September 24-27, to, from or through any of the listed airports may rebook without a change fee for travel through Friday, October 4.

Southwest Airlines ’ travel advisory currently covers 20 airports, from Mexico to Florida and other Southern states. Passengers traveling through impacted airports have two weeks to rebook their flights at no charge.

JetBlue Airways has issued a travel alert for six airports in Florida, two in Georgia and one in South Carolina. The airline will waive change and cancel fees and fare differences for customers traveling Thursday and Friday, September 26-27. They can rebook for flights leaving no later than Wednesday, October 2.

Frontier Airlines has a travel alert for passengers flying in or out of nine Florida airports on Thursday and Friday, September 26-27.

Breeze Airways has a travel alert that lets passengers flying through six airports in Florida rebook for a different flight within two weeks from the original departure at no charge.

Spirit Airlines has a travel advisory covering flights in or out of four Florida airports between Wednesday and Friday, September 25-27. They can be rebooked for travel by Wednesday, October 2.

Hurricane Helene: How To Avoid Flight Disruptions This Week

Flying this week? There’s a lot passengers can do to minimize the chance of getting mired down by a delayed or canceled flight.

Most flight disruptions are caused by weather issues. Up to three days ahead of your flight, you can get a heads-up on potential trouble by referring to NOAA’s National Forecast Map . Hover over Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3 to see what to expect for weather today, tomorrow and the next day. It shows you at a glance where there is going to be rain, thunderstorms, and other kinds of severe weather on your travel day.

Arming yourself with this information allows you to switch dates or routes to tee up a better scenario. Perhaps you can travel a day earlier or later, or change a connecting flight to avoid trouble spots.

Not traveling through Florida? It’s equally important to understand that weather events in one part of the country can cause disruptions throughout the country because airlines reuse planes for multiple flights each day. Planes that get delayed on previous routes often don’t make it to their late-day departure airport on time. For example, a plane stuck in Orlando at 2 p.m. won’t make it to Chicago for its 5:15 p.m. departure. There’s a domino effect, where one delay leads to another.

As a result, afternoon and evening flights anywhere in the country are more likely to be delayed than early-morning flights. Whenever possible, book the earliest flight of the day to minimize the chance of disruption.

On the day of your flight, monitor your airline’s app for flight notifications. On the flight-tracking app FlightAware, enter your flight information , and click on your specific flight. Then click the “Where is my plane now?” link just under the flight number. You’ll be able to see if the plane is ahead of schedule, on time or behind schedule and you can act accordingly — often even before the airline announces a delay or cancellation.

Airlines Issue Travel Alerts Ahead of Predicted Winter Storm in the Northeast

Delta, United Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines each issued travel alerts.

A winter storm is preparing to pelt the East Coast with snow, ice, and rain this weekend, and airlines are preparing by issuing travel alerts.

The worst of the storm is likely to hit north of New York City with areas into the Hudson Valley and along the Connecticut coast expected to receive up to 10 inches of snow, CNN reported . In Boston, residents may see 4 to 7 inches of snow from late Saturday through Sunday night, and areas like Worcester, Massachusetts, may see as much as 6 to 12 inches.

Several airlines were preparing for the storm by proactively issuing travel advisories for large swaths of the Northeast. Delta Air Lines issued an alert for cities as far south as Roanoke, Virginia, and as far north as Maine for travel on Saturday and Sunday. Similarly, United Airlines , American Airlines , JetBlue , and Spirit Airlines each issued weekend alerts for states including New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and beyond.

Airlines that issue these travel alerts waive change fees and fare differences so passengers can reschedule their flights around the storm.

Flight disruptions were possible over the weekend, but travel on Friday was relatively smooth with about 700 delays within, into, or out of the United States as of Friday morning and about 30 cancellations recorded, according to flight tracker FlightAware .

In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement the state was monitoring the forecast, but urged people “to be vigilant” as she expected “heavy, wet snowfall across various regions, potentially causing power outages and hazardous travel.”

While winter storms present travel challenges, one group was ready to welcome the snow: New York’s snow-starved ski resorts . Belleayre Mountain in New York’s Catskill Mountains wrote it was “intently” watching the forecast, and Hunter Mountain wrote it was “gearing up” for the storm.

"Our Fleet Operations Center in Miami continues to actively monitor Hurricane Helene, which is now entering the Gulf of Mexico," the company said on its website . "The safety of our guests and crew remains our priority and our ships are sailing a safe distance from the storm."

Disney Cruise Line Disney Fantasy left from Port Canaveral on Saturday and canceled its Tuesday call at George Town to replace it with a sea day.

The Disney Wish is the only ship that's currently impacted by the storm, a representative for Disney Cruise Lines confirmed to ABC News.

The ship was originally scheduled to arrive on Friday morning at Port Canaveral, which is currently "closed and has ceased all Port operations," with its next departure that was slated for Friday afternoon.

Now, the Disney Wish will arrive later than originally scheduled, the DCL representative said. Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

5 things to know about airline travel alerts

If you've had trips booked to or from Florida or other destinations on the East Coast this past week, there's a good chance you've dealt with an airline travel alert as Hurricane Ian made its way north .

These alerts are common during hurricanes as well as winter snowstorms and particularly disruptive rounds of summer thunderstorms, and often cause airlines to relax their policies surrounding itinerary changes. While they may be called something different from airline to airline — travel notice, advisory, etc. — the idea behind these alerts issued by airlines is that they give passengers improved flexibility in getting on new flights, postponing travel or avoiding cities with bad weather.

In the past, I have used the leniency offered by travel alerts to depart for a trip 24 hours early to beat a snowstorm and to avoid a connecting city where stormy weather was in the forecast. I've also canceled a trip affected by an alert and claimed travel credits I was then able to use for a future flight.

Since airlines have generally relaxed many of their cancellation and change policies compared to before the pandemic, it's much easier to change a trip for free now, even under normal circumstances, than it was a few years ago. Today, how critical a travel alert is for your itinerary often depends on the type of ticket you booked, and how flexible it was to begin with.

At the same time, these alerts can give any traveler an early heads-up about impending bad weather, prompt you to change your itinerary and help with providing added flexibility. So, knowing what a travel alert means and how to take advantage of it will help you have the smoothest and cheapest trip possible — whether it's now, in a couple of days or months down the road.

A travel alert is a good heads-up

I often add my destination city — and even connecting cities — to my iPhone's weather app in the days before a flight, but a travel alert from an airline can likewise be a good way to notice if your itinerary could be affected by bad weather.

Say you're planning to fly from Providence, Rhode Island, to Cancun, Mexico, with a connection in Atlanta. If you get a winter weather travel alert for Atlanta, that might warn you that the likelihood of a delay or cancellation due to snow or ice is high.

These alerts are often based on weather forecasts. They can be an early sign that the weather somewhere along your itinerary is looking dicey and may cause your trip to be disrupted.

Anyone should be able to change a trip

The largest U.S. airlines have relaxed change fees in recent years, allowing passengers in most ticket classes to at least cancel and get flight credit for future trips, or change a ticket and, at worst, pay a fare difference. The big exception, though, is that under normal circumstances, basic economy passengers aboard American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines don't have trip-changing flexibility.

That's where a travel alert comes in: If your trip is affected by one of these advisories, even if you booked basic economy, you'll generally be allowed to change your trip with no fees.

There's frequently no need to stand in line or call the airline's customer service number. Check the airline's app ; you may be able to quickly rebook right there.

Rebook the same trip or get flight credit

Some of the specific terms will differ from airline to airline when it comes to travel alert policies, and can also change from one specific alert to the next. However, on the three domestic legacy carriers, travel alerts often carry two general rebooking options.

If your travels are affected by the alert, you can typically rebook your trip for the near future — often directly after the weather event subsides. If you decide on this option, you may be able to rebook the same trip without paying any difference in fare, as long as you travel in the same cabin. Read the alert carefully: It should specify what the acceptable travel dates are for this option. You'll probably have to book the same origin and destination cities you had planned on your original itinerary.

Alternatively, you can often claim flight credit to use in booking a future flight. This is a good choice if you no longer want to travel to the same destination, or if that specified window of dates no longer works for you. The airlines will typically give you an option to claim flight credits for the value of your ticket. American, Delta and United often allow you a year to use these credits. One thing to watch for: Double-check the alert to see whether you have a year from when you claim the credits or a year from when the original ticket was booked; you'd hate to see those credits expire .

On Southwest Airlines, you can always cancel and rebook your trip with future flight credit, even outside of a travel alert; in fact, certain higher-fare tickets are always eligible for refunds.

Again, these are just general rules of thumb, and specific policies can vary from airline to airline and from one weather event to the next. So, be sure to check the particular alert that applies to your trip.

Not covered by the alert? Keep checking

If you're not covered by a travel alert but are concerned about impending weather, keep checking the airline's website, the app and your email inbox. As weather forecasts change, cities included in travel alerts change.

For instance, as Hurricane Ian began to form as a tropical storm over the Caribbean, airlines issued alerts for destinations like Jamaica, Grand Cayman and some Florida airports. Carriers added dozens more airports to the alerts as Ian strengthened and then moved north, though.

Changing forecasts can also greatly affect the dates listed as part of an alert, so be sure to bookmark the alert page and watch for subsequent updates.

Don't forget about refunds

Keep in mind that whether a cancellation or delay is "the airline's fault," or not, affects reimbursement for things like an extra hotel night or a meal while you wait out a delay. Generally, during bad weather — which is a common cause of travel alerts — you won't be eligible for those types of reimbursements if your trip is disrupted.

On the other hand, if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed and you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a timely refund under U.S. Department of Transportation policies. That goes even for weather-related disruptions.

Keep in mind, if you take the airline up on its offer to rebook you, or accept credits for future travel, you're not eligible for a refund.

If the airline cancels your trip due to the weather though, and you'd like your money back rather than putting it toward future travel, asking the airline for a refund is certainly an option at your disposal.

Bottom line

Plenty of travelers have had to contend with travel alerts over the last couple of weeks as hurricane season threw a wrench in many fall travel plans. Knowing how these advisories work and how they can affect your trips can be crucial. This is especially true as Mother Nature is sure to intervene in itineraries in the form of snow and ice storms within the next few months.

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia

Trans-Siberian heritage

Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.  

In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays. 

Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.   

The cultural center of Siberia

The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.  

The large Siberian sea and ligers

Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .

Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.

Siberian Silicon Valley

Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.

For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .

Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.

Memento Mori

Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of  "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.

Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings. 

Novosibirsk underground

Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.

The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.  

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey. 

Where to stay

There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.
