How to apply for a Schengen visa from Oman

How to apply for a Schengen visa from Oman

If you are from Oman and are looking to travel to Europe, you will likely need a visa in order to enter most if not all of the countries on the continent. Many Omanis interested in traveling to popular destinations like France, Italy, and Germany find that a Schengen visa is the best option for them, as Schengen visas allow their holders to travel freely throughout these and the rest of the 26-countries in the Schengen area, for up to 90 days. Today’s blog will therefore cover how to apply for a Schengen visa from Oman. Keep reading to discover the Schengen visa requirements for Oman citizens and residents, and for the answers to commonly asked questions, including “Where do you apply for Schengen visa in Oman?” and, “What are the Schengen visa types for Oman passport holders?” and finally ,“How much does a Schengen visa cost from Oman?”. All this, plus a step-by step guide to applying for a short-stay Schengen visa from Oman, below:

Apply for a Schengen visa from Oman

  • If you are applying for a short-stay Schengen visa from Oman, you should have an idea of when you need to travel, so that you give yourself enough time to go through the application process.
  • In general, applicants should apply for their Schengen visa no later than three weeks before they travel (and no earlier than six months prior to departing on their trip).
  • There are a number of different Schengen visas and types for Oman passport holders. The type of visa you select is determined by your purpose for travelling (i.e. the reason why you are traveling in the first place).
  • Schengen visas are available in a number of different types, each of which reflect a specific purpose. For example, if you are traveling from Oman to Germany for medical reasons, you should apply for a Medical Schengen visa from Germany.
  • Other popular types of the Schengen visa for the Omanis include Tourist, Visiting Friends and Family, and Business. For a full list of Schengen visa types, click here .
  • Schengen visas are available in single, double, and multiple entry categories; the type you select will determine if (and if so, how many) times you can enter, exit, and re-enter the Schengen area.
  • For example, if you receive a single-entry Schengen visa, you will only be able to enter the Schengen area one time during your visa validity period. If you leave the Schengen area any time after entering it, you will not be able to return to the zone—even if you still have time left on your visa.
  • In contrast, Omanis who obtain a double entry Schengen visa will be able to exit the zone and re-enter it one time during their visa validity period. Theoretically, this means that you could enter the Schengen zone, exit the zone, and then re-enter it one last time before leaving indefinitely at the end of your visa validity period.
  • Finally, a multiple entry Schengen visa allows holders to enter, exit, and re-enter the zone as many times as they choose throughout their visa validity period. This is therefore the most flexible entry category.
  • Where you are traveling in the Schengen area will determine where you apply for your Schengen visa.
  • Applicants apply for the Schengen visa from the Schengen state where they intend to be spending the most time on their trip.
  • If you are only visiting one Schengen country on your trip, you will apply for a Schengen visa from that country. However, if you are planning on visiting two or more countries on the same visit, you must determine which country is your primary destination.
  • For example, if you are traveling to both Germany and France, and you are spending 30 days in France and 20 days in Germany, you should apply for a French Schengen visa. However, if you are spending an equal amount of time in both places (say, 30 days in both France and Germany) you should apply through the destination that represents your first entry into the Schengen area (continuing this scenario, if you were flying directly into the Schengen area via Muscat to Berlin, you would apply for a German Schengen visa, because Berlin would represent your first entry into the Schengen area.
  • Now that you know how to figure out what country you are applying to, you may still be wondering “where do you apply for Schengen visa in Oman?”.
  • You will apply for your Schengen visa from Oman through the embassy, consulate, or visa application center affiliated with the Schengen country you are applying through.
  • For example, if you are applying for a German Schengen visa, you will apply through German Embassy in Muscat.
  • Some Schengen countries (particularly small ones) effectively outsource their Schengen visa processing to larger countries. For example, the German Embassy in Muscat represent the consular affairs of Iceland, meaning that if you are visiting Iceland and want to apply for an Icelandic Schengen visa, you will apply for it through the German Embassy in Muscat (rather than through the Icelandic embassy, which does not have an outpost in Oman.
  • Passport (valid, unexpired, and with space for your Schengen visa).
  • Passport photos (2).
  • Basic Schengen visa application.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Proof of subsistence (i.e. proof that you can financially support yourself throughout your stay).
  • Proof of travel medical insurance.
  • In addition to the above required documents, anyone applying for a Schengen visa for the Omanis must submit a number of supplemental documents, which are dependent on what type of Schengen visa they have.
  • For example, if you are applying for a Schengen visa to Visit Friends and Family, you will likely have to include an invitation letter from the person you are visiting in the Schengen area, inviting you to visit/stay with him or her.
  • For a complete list of required and supplemental documents, click here .
  • Please note that most countries require that the documents you submit be accompanied by an official translation into either English, their official language(s), or another common European language (if your original document is not written in one of those languages). For example, if you are applying for a Visiting Friends or Family visa, and you submit an invitation letter from the person in the Schengen area that is written in Arabic as part of your supplemental documents, you may have to include an official translation of that letter into German, English, or another European language, in order for it to be accepted.
  • Contact us to help you check with the embassy/consulate you are applying through for clarification on language requirements for submitted documents.
  • All Schengen visa applicants must submit the basic Schengen application form. Depending on what country you are applying to, you may be able to submit the universal Schengen visa form, available here .
  • Download, print out, fill out, and submit the above form, along with the rest of your required documents to complete your application.
  • Not all countries accept the above harmonized application—some require you to apply online, through a country-specific visa portal. For example, France requires all applicants to apply online, through this link .
  • If you apply online, you may also be able to pay for your visa online and make a visa appointment through the online portal.
  • Please note that even if you apply online, you may be asked to print out a copy of your online application and carry it with you to your Schengen visa appointment.
  • The majority of Schengen countries require you to attend an in-person visa appointment in order to formally submit your visa application and fulfill the other application requirements; the majority of these countries also require that you schedule an appointment to do so. This means that most countries will not simply allow you to drop off your application at your embassy/consulate/visa center without a prior appointment.
  • As previously mentioned, if you apply online, you may receive a prompt to schedule a visa appointment at some point during your online application process.
  • If you did not apply online (i.e. if you simply accessed the universal Schengen visa form or if you applied online but didn’t receive a prompt to schedule an appointment), you can contact us to help you with the embassy/consulate/visa center to see if you need one.
  • Your Schengen visa appointment is where you will formally submit your application, pay your visa fee (if you have not already paid it online), submit your biometric information (if you have not recently submitted it on a previous Schengen visa application) and attend a short Schengen visa interview.
  • Your biometric information is your fingerprints and photos, which are collected and submitted into the Schengen security system.
  • If you are wondering “How much does a Schengen visa cost from Oman?” the answer is 80 EUR for most applicants. Certain categories of applicants, such as most students, are subject to reduced visa fees (or exempt from them altogether). For complete information on Schengen visa fees, click here .
  • Please note, if you have already submitted your biometric information within the last five years, and if you have already paid your visa fees (and especially if you travel frequently to the Schengen area), you may not be asked to attend an interview, and you may even avoid the requirement that you submit your application in person. However, most applicants are asked to appear in person to apply, and if you are asked, you must do so.
  • If you receive a Schengen visa from Oman, congratulations!
  • If you are rejected for an Omani visa to the Schengen area, you have the right to appeal. For more information on the appeal process, click here .

Note that if you have already submitted your biometrics to the Schengen VIS (Visa Information System) in the past 5 years, you do not have to submit them again. The time taken to process the Maltese tourist permit depends on several factors such as the number of entries, the validity of your permit, the volume of application at the embassy, your previous travel history, and so on. As a result, it is suggested that you apply for it well in advance. Normally, it takes around 10-15 working days. However, this may even increase to 30 days in some cases, and may even take 60 days in certain extreme cases.

The fees for the process depends on the number of entries, the biometric charges, as well as any other service charges. It can also vary depending upon the currency exchange rates. It is, therefore, suggested that you check the exact amount before applying.

Once you have submitted the application at the VAC, the application is then forwarded to the Embassy of Malta in New Delhi. The VAC has no control over the processing. They are purely in charge of the administrative section of the visa application. The processing is done by the embassy alone. Once the permit has been approved, you can collect it directly from the VAC, or you can have it delivered to you for an additional charge.

After submission, you can do the Malta visa status tracking by visiting https://www.vfsvisaonline.com/Global-Passporttracking/Track/ and entering your reference number and date of birth. You may also contact your travel agency to know the status.

Once you have received the permit, you must keep in mind the following points to ensure that you have a pleasant experience.

  • Keep note of the expiry date, duration of stay, as well as the number of entries mentioned on the visa sticker. You must not stay longer than the permitted duration.
  • Carry all the travel documents before travelling. You will be denied entry into Malta without this.
  • Ensure that you travel to Malta within 6 months of the visa issue date, or as mentioned. After this date, your permit will become invalid and you will not be able to enter the country.
  • While you are travelling within the country, always carry a copy of your travel documents with you.
  • While you are on a tourist permit, you cannot take part in work.
  • You will not be able to extend the tourist visa under normal conditions
  • You can move freely within the Schengen zone. And depending on your entry type, you may enter or exit the Schengen as permitted.

After Expiring My Malta Tourist permit, How Long Can I Stay?

Once you have expired your Maltese tourist permit, you cannot stay any longer in the country. As per the rules, you are expected to leave the country before the permit expires. Staying back after this is considered as an offence and can get you deported, and in certain cases, be banned from entering the Schengen region again.

What is the Medical Test for Malta Schengen Tourist Visa?

Can I Convert My Malta Schengen Tourist Visa into a work permit?

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit the  Embassy of Malta’s  website for the most current visa information.

Malta is a party to the Schengen Agreement. This means that U.S. citizens may enter Malta for up to  90 days for tourist or business purposes  without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date. You need proof of sufficient funds and a return airline ticket for entry. For additional details about travel into and within Schengen countries, please see  Traveling in Europe .

Diplomats entering Malta on their diplomatic passport are required to obtain a visa prior to entry into Malta. For more information, please contact [email protected] .

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any  HIV/AIDS  entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Malta.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Europe. European governments are taking action to guard against terrorist attacks; however, all European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations. Malta’s open borders with members of the Schengen zone allow the possibility of individual terrorists entering/exiting the country undetected.

CRIME: The most commonly reported crimes are simple assault , pick-pocketing , and petty theft . While armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides are not as common as in some major U.S. cities, they do occur. Criminals focus on areas and establishments frequented by tourists.

  • Secure your valuables, and be aware of pick-pockets and purse snatchers.
  • Theft of unattended property is a very common problem.

See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Nightclubs: You should be careful in the Paceville nightclub area, where excessive drinking, large crowds, and interaction with heavy-handed bouncers can lead to violence , including some that appears to be racially-motivated . Criminals have drugged some travelers at bars and robbed and assaulted them.

Victims of Crime: Report crimes to the local police by dialing 112 and contact the U.S. Embassy at (+356) 2561-4000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms
  • Provide a list of local attorneys who meet minimal embassy vetting standards
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence should contact the Embassy for assistance.

Malta’s crime victim assistance agency, Appogg , can be reached by calling its support line (dial 179) or by visiting its website .

The local equivalent to the 911 emergency line in Malta is 112 .

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not occur on a regular basis.  Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field.  In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities.  First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities to provide urgent medical treatment.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Your U.S. passport will not help you avoid arrest or prosecution .

  • Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Malta are severe .
  • Malta’s laws on the rights of arrestees are different from the United States. For example, once you have contacted a lawyer, you lose your right to remain silent.

Judicial Proceedings for Criminal Offenses in Malta: Trials typically last five to seven years and are characterized by lengthy and sometimes unpredictable delays between hearings. Foreign nationals can expect to be denied bail while a court case is ongoing, which can result in lengthy periods of pre-trial detention ranging from several months to several years. Obtaining no-fee legal aid can be a slow and difficult process, delaying already lengthy judicial proceedings.

Furthermore, some crimes are also prosecutable in the United States regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Customs and Currency Restrictions: Malta customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning currency restrictions and temporary importation into or export from Malta of items such as firearms , antiquities , or any item that might be deemed to have resale value. It is advisable to contact the Maltese Embassy in Washington, D.C. for specific information regarding customs requirements.

  • Malta’s customs authorities encourage the use of an ATA (Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission) Carnet for the temporary admission of professional equipment, commercial samples and/or goods for exhibitions and fair purposes. The U.S. Council for International Business issues and guarantees the ATA Carnet in the United States.

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports

LGBTI RIGHTS: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Malta.

See the LGBTI Travel Information page and Section 6 of the State Department’s Human Rights Report for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: Very few public or private spaces in Malta are wheelchair accessible. Public transportation and most sidewalks or footpaths, including road crossings, are not accessible for those with mobility challenges. Many apartments lack elevators.

  • Taxis are readily available, but the cost is substantially higher than public buses.

Students: See the students abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: See travel tips for women travelers .

Medical care is available from private and government clinics and hospitals. The quality of medical care in Malta is at U.S. standards; however, customer service standards are lower, there are cultural differences with regard to communication, and there may be long waiting times for non-urgent medical care . Medical specialists are few. Private hospitals generally offer better customer service, shorter wait times, and more amenities. Mater Dei is Malta’s main government hospital. Though it offers full service, including a modern emergency room and trauma facilities, it can be crowded and difficult to navigate.

The U.S. Government does not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas . Most overseas care providers only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

If traveling with prescription medication , check with the Government of Malta and its Medicines Authority to ensure the medication is legal in Malta . Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

TRAFFIC SAFETY AND ROAD CONDITIONS: Maltese drivers may drive more aggressively and with less caution than visitors anticipate. Roads flood easily and are often narrow, winding and congested, with poor visibility around curves.

  • In Malta, automobiles drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • Buses are the primary means of public transportation.
  • Taxis are safe but expensive and are not metered . Agree on the charge with the driver in advance .

Please see our road safety page for more information. Visit the website of Malta’s national tourist office and national authority responsible for road safety.

AVIATION SAFETY OVERSIGHT: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Malta’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Malta’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Malta should check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts at the Maritime Security Communications with Industry Web Portal . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website and as a broadcast warning on the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s website .

Malta visa policy.

Malta is one of the territories to make up the Schengen Area after becoming a signatory to the Schengen Agreement. This is why it maintains the same policy as 26 other Schengen countries and territories in Europe. Anyone looking to visit Malta must complete the policy and hold a visa unless they are from non-visa-exempt countries or territories. Such visitors qualify for the universal Schengen visa waiver program so they can visit Malta for a short time without the need to hold valid visas.

Eligibility of visa entry or nonvisa entry is based on the visitor's nationality, duration of stay, and the purpose of the trip. This is the policy that guides the overall immigration regulation of the island.

As for the EU and Schengen, nationals don't need visas to enter Malta as they enjoy freedom of entry and exit. Furthermore, Schengen citizens can enter another country in the Area with valid ID cards if they don't have passports and stay indefinitely in the Country or territory for as long as they wish.

Malta Schengen Visa

Another category of persons that can visit Malta is persons from jo visa-exempt countries. If you are from a nonvisa-exempt country, you will need a Schengen visa to enter Malta. Schengen visas are valid for 180 days and allow the holder to stay in Malta for up to 90 days. These visas are multinational visas because the holder can equally visit any other Schengen country or territory with the same visa instead of applying for a different visa for each Country. Moreover, the Schengen visa can also be used to visit other non-Schengen European countries, like Romania, the Republic of Cyprus, and Bulgaria.

Schengen visas are not work or study visas: they are issued for the sole purpose of tourism, business transit, or any other short-term non-economic purposes.

  • Malta ETIAS

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new program launched by the European Commission on behalf of the EU and Schengen States. This program was commissioned in 2016 and unveiled in late 2022. ETIAS is a visa waiver program for nationals from visa-exempt countries who wish to visit Malta or any other Schengen country in Europe. It is a pre-screening system in which the visitor must pass and get a permit for entry. In the past visa-exempt visitors could simply visit the Schengen Area with just a valid passport, but all that has changed now.

The policy is partially implemented, but by the start of 2024, all visa-exempt visitors must get ETIAS approval before they can enter the Schengen Area. ETIAS is an electronic system that screens the information of each visitor using several security databases. Persons who pass the screening will be issued the approval, while those who fail will be denied entry into Europe.

This is not a visa on arrival or an electronic visa but an entry permit. It allows visitors to enter and stay in Malta for up to 90 days but only within a 180 days period. ETIAS is also valid for 3 years and can be used multiple times.

Key Information About Malta ETIAS

The application process for Malta ETIAS may be straightforward and simple, but the rules guiding its use are somewhat complex. To ensure that you leave nothing to chance, we review key information; you should keep in mind.

Primary Destination Rule:  When traveling to Schengen countries and territories, the primary destination rule is one to keep in mind. This rule states that visitors with plans to visit more than one Schengen country must make the first Country they intend to visit their primary destination. For instance, if you plan to visit five Schengen countries in 90 days and Malta is your first port of call, you should make it your primary destination when filling out your Etias form.

90/180 Rule: This rule covers the duration of stay. It simply means that the applicant must not stay for more than 90 days In Malta within 180 days. The rule still holds if you decide to visit other countries during your trip. Rather than counting the days per Country separately, the days are calculated concurrently from the first day you step into Malta and the last day you spend in a different country before leaving the Schengen Area.

Additional Vetting:  ETIAS screening processes take some minutes, and you should know your fate immediately whether your application has been accepted or not. However, in certain situations, applications may be put on hold if your details trigger a security alert, but this rarely happens. Your data will be forwarded to the local ETIAS unit in Malta for further vetting in such a scenario. You will be notified; the orgies may take a few days or weeks to respond.

Only For Visa Exempt Nationals: This permit is only designed for visitors who qualify for the visa waiver program by virtue of their nationality. If you are not from a visa-exempt country, apply for a Schengen visa instead.

Not For Employment or Study: ETIAS is not for employment or study as it is only a short-stay document, not for long-term residency or work. If you must work or study in Malta, apply for a work or study visa instead.

Malta Visa Online – Get your Malta e-Visa with VisaHQ

If you are planning a trip to Malta, you need to know which document to apply for depending on your nationality. For visitors from visa-exempt countries, an online ETIAS application is mandatory. Malta is a pleasant place to visit, but you will not get to enjoy all the amazing sights and sounds of the Mediterranean island if you don't meet the entry requirements.

How To Apply For ETIAS With VisaHQ

If you wish to apply for ETIAS with VisaHQ, here are the steps to take.

Fill The Form: The first step is to complete the application form with accurate details. Make sure your details are accurate and in line with what is on your documents.

Upload Documents:  Since the application is online, you will have to upload soft copies of all the relevant documents depending on the type of ETIAS you are applying for. After uploading the documents, pay the nonrefundable application fee and submit the form.

Get the ETIAS:  Processing takes only some minutes, and if you meet the conditions, the ETIAS will be sent to your email address.

Why Use VisaHQ?

You should use VisaHQ because of several benefits.

  • Our platform is safe and secure
  • The application takes only a few minutes to complete
