Cambodia and Laos — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Go boating on the Mekong River during a Cambodia and Laos tour.

Traveling to Cambodia and/Vs Laos: An Overview

Thinking about planning a Cambodia and Laos tour? We’ve got all the basics covered for you to set you on your way.

Getting From Cambodia to Laos

By and large, the cheapest way to get from Cambodia to Laos is a combination of bus and train journey. However, this travel option will take you via Thailand and can take around 24 hours. If you’re short on time, you can take a flight from Siem Reap to Luang Prabang which takes around 1 hour 40 minutes.

Best Time to Visit Cambodia to Laos

The best time to plan your Laos and Cambodia itinerary is between November and March. You can avoid the rainy season, which is a lot cooler and less humid during this time. For more information, check out our guide on the best time to visit Cambodia .

Highlights of Cambodia and Laos Trip

See Angkor Wat and its reflection on water during Cambodia and Laos tour.

  • Dive into culture with some temple tours to sites such as Angkor Wat and Pha That Luang Vientiane.
  • Spend time in nature at the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfall and on the relaxing island of Koh Rong.
  • Go on a food hunt at night markets of Phnom Penh and Luang Prabang. From snacks to big noodle bowls and everything in between, you’ll be full for days.

Cambodia and Laos Travel Tips

  • Bring a shawl or a scarf to cover your shoulders and knees while visiting temples on your Cambodia and Laos tour package.
  • Mosquito repellent is going to be essential in many parts of your Cambodia and Laos trip, especially if you’re traveling near the Mekong River.
  • Make sure you have cash handy in both Cambodia and Laos. Outside of the major cities, using cards is pretty much impossible, and even in the cities, small purchases like snacks and drinks require cash.

All excursions and transfers on this tour are on a private basis, apart from the cruise portions, which are shared with other passengers. Your Cambodia and Laos Mekong adventure begins in Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh. See the National Museum and the Silver Pagoda. Learn about Cambodia’s tragic past at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek; it’s not a warm experience but it is essential if you want to understand what happened in Cambodia during the time of the Pol Pot regime.

Your Cambodia river cruise

Step aboard a luxurious French-colonial-styled riverboat for your Mekong Cruise. See the villages, including silversmiths’ and pottery villages along the way, as well as a floating ice factory. Explore the communities around the mighty Tonlé Sap Lake, where the local houses are built on stilts to allow for the lake’s changing levels. Explore the Prek Toal Core Bird Reserve by boat and spot large water birds such as the spot-billed pelicans, milky stork, black-headed ibis and the elusive masked finfoot.

The temples of Angkor

Your guided tour of Laos and Cambodia continues with an exploration of the incredible temples of Angkor. See the ancient city area of Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm, a temple complex slowly being reclaimed by the jungle. Marvel at the 400-acre Angkor Wat complex; stroll through the intricately carved hallways and take your time to see every part of this incredible complex.

Royal and Recent History of Phnom Penh

Home to about 1.5 million people, Phnom Penh has been Cambodia’s capital since the French colonization of the country.

Spend the morning exploring some key attractions in this charming city which boasts a rich blend of Khmer and colonial architecture. Explore the hillside Wat Phnom with its big trees and mischievous monkeys and hear about the legend of Lady Penh, the founder of the city; the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, two of the most striking buildings in the capital and considered as some of the finest examples of Khmer architecture. At the Silver Pagoda, notice the small green crystal Buddha (the “Emerald Buddha”) and a life-sized solid-gold Buddha, which weighs 90kg (198lb) and is adorned with 2086 diamonds; and the National Museum, designed in Khmer style by a French archaeologist and painter in 1917. The museum’s collection includes over 14,000 items, making it one of the world’s largest collections of Khmer art, including sculptural, ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects.

After lunch, meet your guide again, for a tour into the dark times of Phnom Penh. Learn about the turbulent Khmer Rouge years with visits to Tuol Sleng, a high school turned interrogation prison known as S-21 during the Khmer Rouge era and now a genocide museum; and Cheung Ek, a large memorial commemorating the 17,000 victims who died there under the reign of Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot.

Return to your hotel in the late afternoon. We suggest a walk along the Tonle River Promenade and a dinner in one of the many restaurants in the area.

Angkor Temples at Your Pace

It’s a full day around the Angkor Archeological Park today.

After breakfast, transfer by private car to Ta Prohm – one of Angkor’s jewels. Overgrown with fig trees, giving a haunting yet exotic atmosphere, is the most photographable. From here drive a short distance to Ta Keo, which would have been one of the finest temples in Angkor had it been completed.

Continue to Angkor Thom – an entire walled city, the royal Capital in the 12th century. With a population of 1 million, it was far bigger than any city in Europe at the time. The amazing centerpiece is the Bayon temple crowned with 216 giant, smiling faces of King Jayavarman VII.

Take a lunch break before the exploration of Angkor Wat, claimed to be the largest religious building in the world. The temple, which took 30 years to construct & used the labor of 300,000 workers was built as the earthly representation of the universe with its’ central tower symbolizing Mt Meru – the center of the Universe.

Return to your hotel late afternoon.

Countryside on the Back of the Vespa and Evening Show

This morning, delve into the idyllic Cambodian countryside on this Vespa tour of cultural discovery! Start by visiting APOPO, an NGO that trains southern giant pouched rats to detect landmines. Nicknamed ‘Hero Rats’, these critters are an invaluable asset in the fight to safely remove the explosive legacies of war.

Waving farewell to these valiant rodents, leave the hustle of the city behind and follow tree-lined roads deep into the countryside, stopping at a local market to be introduced to your guide’s favorite vendors.

Venture onwards to a beautiful Buddhist temple to receive a traditional blessing, gaining an intriguing insight into the local belief system and the daily lives of monks.

Hop back on the Vespa and cruise through the lush natural scenery of rice paddies and farmland to enjoy refreshments at a local household and meet their herd of water buffalo.

Interact with the other local families who each have their own specialized trade, from rattan weavers and sugar palm harvesters to noodle makers and traditional medicine vendors. Epitomizing the hardworking ethics of rural life, it’s a heartwarming experience to meet these resourceful communities, and you are sure to return to the city with a deeper appreciation of their challenging livelihoods!

In the evening your driver will pick you up in time for the fascinating and inspiring Phare Circus Show and dinner.

Phare Circus works mainly with disadvantaged young people. They learn circus skills, theatre performance, music, and a range of visual arts. It combines local traditions with new creative and innovative genres.

Daring athleticism is combined with stories that speak powerfully to Cambodia’s not-too-distant history.

As you are guided around the community, you will hear & feel the vibrations of their morning traditional chanting to finish this exclusive experience before continuing onwards.

The rest of the day at leisure.

Market Snacks and Architecture

You’ll be picked up by your guide early in the morning, to start the day in the Lao lifestyle. The morning market in Luang Prabang, lining a couple of quiet streets near the Royal Palace, starts early and is over by mid-morning. Your guide will explain how the dishes are made and encourage you to sample some of the authentic snacks.

From here we’ll continue to marvel at Luang Prabang’s beautiful mix of architecture, drawing influences from both the East and the West. Enjoy a lively presentation on preservation projects, followed by a walking tour of some of the town’s architectural highlights.

Wander through small streets and alleys to observe the lifestyle that the local people have maintained. If time permits, we can stop by the local home and meet the owners for a glimpse of daily life in this laid-back town. Back to the hotel for late lunch and remains of the day at leisure.

Cambodia & Laos Luxury Tours

The reddish-brown Mekong River runs through Cambodia and Laos, where they share a bit of border. Both countries are less traveled than other Southeast Asia nations.

Cambodia, however, has the advantage of possessing one of the world’s timeless archeological gems… Angkor Wat.

For generations much of the outside world believed Angkor was little more than an exaggeration or an outright fairytale. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is recognized among mankind’s grandest architectural achievements, ranking in importance with the monumental sites of Egypt and those of the Inca and the Aztec in Latin America.  This amazing complex once encompassed more than a thousand temples constructed roughly between the 9th to 15th centuries.

Beyond these ancient temples, Cambodia’s Phnom Penh is one of the prettiest of the French-built cities of Indochina, while Siem Reap, with its proximity to Angkor, is becoming a major tourist destination with luxury hotels and busy markets.  It also boasts white sand beaches, untouched islands in the South China Sea, and remote, thickly forested mountains.

Laos, too, has a great sweep of pristine mountains.  They are home to some of the region’s oldest hill tribe societies.  The rapid pace of change taken for granted in much of Southeast Asia slows its pulse considerably when it comes to Laos.  There are no railroads and few roads and trails so the Mekong River, much like the early days on the Mississippi River, serves as the country’s main artery through which goods and communications flow.

Laos remains a land of genuine faith, where Buddhism permeates every facet of life, and everywhere you see lines of orange-robed young boys, novice monks passing silently by with their freshly shaved heads bowed.   It is also one of Indochina’s most beautiful countries with primary forests, lavish waterfalls, and a wealth of endemic flora and fauna.  Both countries offer rewarding adventures and authentic encounters to those who accept the invitation.

Tour Itinerary

This tour is ideal for adventures who have a reasonable amount of time and who are looking to visit the main sights of Laos and Cambodia. We have designed the tour to make the most of the time available to showcase the key highlights and cities of Laos and Cambodia.

DAYS 1-2 FLY TO VIENTIANE

Fly overnight to Vientiane via Bangkok. Depending on your time of arrival the rest of the day is yours to start soaking up the local culture.

DAY 3 EXPLORE VIENTIANE

Nestled in a sleepy bend of the Mekong, Vientiane is a delightfully quaint city, more friendly backwater than chaotic capital. Visit the morning market, Wat Si Saket and Wat Phra Keo, the former Royal Temple, before viewing That Luang Stupa and the Patuxai Victory Monument. Also, drop in at the COPE visitor centre. Dinner this evening will be accompanied by a traditional Lao music and dance performance.

DAY 4 TRAVEL TO VANG VIENG

Depart Vientiane for Vang Vieng, a town beautifully set in a spectacular karst landscape that has become Laos’ adventure capital. En route, stop at Nam Ngum Lake, a reservoir created by damming the Nam Ngum River, where deep green waters are backed by mountains and forest.

DAY 5 EXPLORE VANG VIENG

Venture into the Tham Chang cave before wandering through the dramatic limestone karst countryside beside the Nam Song River.

DAY 6 TRAVEL TO LUANG PRABANG

Return to Vientiane and fly to the beautiful city of Luang Prabang. The quintessential image of Laos and a place of vivid colours, where you’ll find a rich heritage and enduring French legacy.

DAY 7 PAK OU CAVES

Visit the exquisite Wat Visoun and Wat Xieng Thong. Cruise up the languid Mekong River to the sacred caves of Pak Ou, known for the hundreds of miniature Buddhist sculptures that reside within. On the return trip stop off at the villages of Thin Hong and Ban Xang Khong.

DAY 8 KUANG SI WATERFALLS

Begin the day at the National Museum, housed in the former Royal Palace. Drive out of the city, stopping for a visit to Ock Pop Tok Weaving Centre, before heading to the natural splendour of Kuang Si Waterfalls. Enjoy the vivid blue, terraced pools that tumble down through their forest setting, taking a dip or relaxing by the water’s edge.

DAY 9 TAKBAT

Rise early this morning to witness the monks of Luang Prabang’s monastic communities collecting alms from the locals – the ceremony of Takbat. These lines of silent saffron robeclad monks will be an enduring image of your trip. Later this morning, climb Phousi Hill for panoramic views over the city. Fly to Siem Reap where you can while away the evening at the lively night market.

DAY 10 EXPLORE ANGKOR

The seat of the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries, the Angkor complex includes over 1,000 temples. Rising early, the tour begins in the heart of Angkor Thom, the old walled city - passing through its South Gate you’ll reach the enigmatic Bayon and visit the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. Continue to Ta Prohm, an atmospheric temple left in the grips of the jungle. This afternoon is dedicated to the indescribable Angkor Wat. The best preserved of Angkor’s temples, examine the vast number of intricate details and relish the sheer magnificence of its architecture.

DAY 11 TONLE SAP LAKE

In the High Water Season (Aug to Feb) visit Beng Mealea, a mysterious temple overrun by the jungle before enjoying a cruise on Tonle Sap Lake, visiting the floating village of Kampong Kleng and observing the way of life of these lake communities. In the Low Water Season (Mar to Jul) head to Chong Kneas floating village. Return to Siem Reap via the The SATCHA Handicraft Centre. This evening sit down to dinner and the Apsara dance show.

DAY 12 BANTEAY SREI

Admire the captivating Banteay Srei, a richly embellished Hindu Temple made of rosecolored sandstone. Wander the atmospheric ruins of Preah Khan. Take a leisurely boat ride on the moat of Angkor Thom and view hidden elements of the ancient Khmer water systems.

DAY 13 RURAL BATTAMBANG

Depart Siem Reap for the city of Battambang, stopping off at the National Silk Centre, where you can learn about the silk creation process.

DAY 14 EXPLORE BATTAMBANG

Battambang is set in some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes. Head out of town to the 12th-century Prasat Banan Temple, returning to Battambang to stroll through the village of Wat Kor. Later, visit a local NGO, La Maison de Coco, where traditional skills such as weaving are taught to locals before exploring a cave at Phnom Sampov, home to a huge colony of bats.

DAY 15 TRAVEL TO PHNOM PENH

Journey south to the city of Phnom Penh, making a stop at the 17th century capital of Udong and Kampong Chhnang to see the traditional handmade pottery. On arrival at Phnom Penh, the rest of the day is at leisure.

DAY 16 PHNOM PENH BY CYCLO

Experience a cyclo ride to the magnificent Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda before scaling the small hill topped by Wat Phnom. Later, enjoy the exhibits of the National Museum, which are housed in a spectacular Khmerstyle building, before learning about the tragedies of the recent past at the harrowing Tuol Sleng Museum.

DAYS 17-18 FLY PHNOM PENH TO UK

What people love about Laos Tours

Absolutely loved Laos although would have liked to have spent more time in Luang Prabang. Our first guide was fantastic and so incredibly knowledgeable. For three star accommodation I could not fault it. Unless you particularly want to see the countryside, I would highly recommend to fly like my friends did to Vientiane, as the itinerary lied. The trip was not the 8 hours like stated, rather closer to 12 hours. There were limited English speaking people and the communication was limited therefore I was unsure what was going on at times regarding the arrival time to Vientiane. Furthermore it was not explained what our food voucher was for and there were not toilet break between the 2pm lunch break and the arrival time in Vientiane over 5 hours later. Don't be deceived either by the 'Deluxe' bus as it is 'Deluxe' 3rd world style. No biggie however had the most amazing hotel on the Mekong River, overlooking Thailand however the internet was non existent unless you were in the reception or restaurant. Compared to the communication from Hoi An Express during my Vietnam tour, I found the communication in Laos was very limited. There was no communication regarding my transfer between cities and it was something I was required to chase up myself.
The guides were both excellent, very engaging, caring and very knowledgeable; the organization was in some respects a bit confused, in one case regarding how a local payment was to be made and in another instance there was a request for some official Lao document of which I had no awareness. Overall, however, the experience was excellent. Thank you
My husband and I went to Laos on mild sunny days. This place is almost pristine and we were close to nature. The temples here are wonderful and the views are amazing. The trip was interesting and smooth thanks to the Realistic Asia team.

Hoi An Express

"I have nothing but accolades for the services of TourRadar with all email questions answered promptly and with the complete information seeked. The tour of Laos and Cambodia was organised locally through Hoi An Express and I have nothing but accolades for their service which was excellent, impressive local guides and driver at each location. The hotel locations were centrally and conveniently located, very clean, friendly helpful staff and all amenities as expected. I had not heard of TourRadar before 'surfing' the internet and finding this trip - I know now, that for future trips, I will most certainly look through trips that Tour Radar has to offer and will also be advising all my single girlfriends to do so also.

Learn more about Laos

Best time to visit laos.

Laos is a great place to visit at any time of the year as the weather doesn't vary much – it’s always hot and humid! The coolest time to visit is from November to January. This is also the driest time, and the main festival period, so it’s an interesting time to travel through Laos. The wet season runs from June to October. It rains frequently during this time, temperatures average over 85 degrees Fahrenheit and although some roads may be closed due to flooding, it is a great time for river travel. February to May is drier but hot, with temperatures climbing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Culture and customs

The population of Laos is made up of more than 100 different ethnic groups, with each having their own distinct clothing, language, customs and way of life. The Lao Loum, who reside in the lowlands along the Mekong, make up the largest ethnic group. Smaller ethnic groups include the Hmong and Mien, both highland dwellers, and the Lao Thoeng, who prefer the lower mountains. Many tribes share cultural similarities with tribes from neighbouring countries, so it’s possible to see Chinese , Vietnamese , Khmer and Thai influences within the dress, food and arts of these people.

Generally, Laotians are known for their laidback lifestyle and calm, steady approach to life. With an emphasis on the simple pleasures of family, food and religion, most people from Laos remain closely connected to their family and village for a lifetime. Most Laotians live in villages, rather than the city, where the sense of community is strong and people are connected to their neighbours and friends. Visiting wats (temples) to make offerings and give alms to monks is a common part of daily life for most, with much respect and reverence reserved for monks.

Buddhist holidays and traditional festivals linked to harvest time and holy periods are commonly celebrated throughout the villages of Laos and are timed according to lunar cycles. With different dates each year, it can be hard to predict the exact timing of these local celebrations, but visiting one can provide great insight into the fascinating culture of Laos.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Laotian cuisine draws on culinary traditions from its neighbors, so visitors will be able to taste the flavors of China, Thailand and Vietnam in the food of Laos.

Things to try in Laos

This spicy meat salad is considered the national dish of Lao. The delicious combination of minced beef, chicken or pork seasoned with chili, lime and mint, served with vegetables and sticky rice is a firm favorite with locals and travelers.

2. Khao Poon

This popular soup of meat, rice noodles, lime leaves, chili, garlic and fish sauce has a few variations. The version made with coconut milk makes the dish similar to a laksa, while the version without coconut milk is a lighter option.

3. Fresh fruit

The markets of Laos have a cornucopia of delicious fruits on offer, either fresh or whipped up in a juice. Pineapple, orange, watermelon, guava and banana are plentiful but why not try more exotic fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan or jackfruit?

The answer to Laos’ heat and humidity is a bottle of locally brewed Beerlao, best served cold at the end of a long day of exploring.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Laos is located in South-East Asia, bordered by China, Thailand , Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar . The topography of Laos is very mountainous, with much of the land being covered in forest and unsuitable for farming. Due to the mountainous terrain, Laos lacks a developed road network, with most locals living in small villages in the highlands, lowlands and along the Mekong River. Visiting Laos is like going back in time to when highways, traffic jams, mass transit systems and skyscrapers didn't exist. Visitors will be awed by the lush landscapes and stunning scenery, which is unlike anywhere else on earth.

History and government

Early history.

It's thought that Laos has been inhabited by people for thousands of years, although written evidence reveals that societies existed in the 9th century. Early society was based on agriculture and prior to the advent of Buddhism in the 16th century, people largely subscribed to animist beliefs and Shiva-worship, with archaeological evidence of this remaining today.

Like its neighboring countries, Laos was ruled by a series of kingdoms and was subject to invasion from surrounding forces from nearby domains. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s, with the Dutch being the first to arrive. Despite this, the French have had the most European influence in the region. After enduring years of invasion and control from neighboring countries, Laos also had French rule to contend with in the late 1800s, when it became a French colony.

Recent history

Laos was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, was declared an independent state in 1950 and gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1954. The 1960s proved to be a devastating time for the people of Laos, with their nation gaining the dubious honor of being the most bombed country in the world. The United States bombed Laos extensively in an attempt to eradicate North Vietnamese sanctuaries, and sadly contemporary Laos is still dealing with huge amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that is littered throughout the countryside.

A coalition government was set up in 1962, but in 1975 Laos became a Communist state when the king gave up his throne in favor of a president and prime minister being instated. During the late 1970s, many people of Laos fled to neighboring countries as refugees, as trade embargoes from foreign nations led to widespread poverty and disadvantage. By the 1990s, Laos had become a full member of ASEAN and foreign nations had lifted their trade embargoes, which allowed free enterprise to grow.

Day 15: Luang Prabang

laos cambodia tours

Awake with the sun’s first rays, immersing yourself in Laos’ sacred traditions as you join the morning almsgiving ritual. Over 200 Buddhist monks, clad in saffron robes, gracefully tread the streets of Luang Prabang to collect alms from devout locals. Meditative and barefooted, the monks receive offerings of sticky rice, bananas, sweets, and more, bestowing blessings in return. Afterward, explore the vibrant morning market where villagers exchange fresh catches for essential ingredients, providing a glimpse into local life.

Your day unfolds with a visit to Wat Xiengthong , an architectural gem boasting an ornate two-tiered roof and intricate mosaics. The Royal Palace Museum, a colonial-era residence for King Sisavang Vong, awaits exploration. Savor authentic Laotian cuisine at Tamarind for lunch.

Your journey continues to the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, displaying the diverse heritage of Laos’ ethnic minorities through traditional costumes, tools, and artifacts. In the late afternoon, ascend Mount Phousi for a sunset vista of the city and the Mekong River, complete with a gilded stupa. The day concludes with a cultural dinner featuring traditional dance and folk songs, offering an intimate immersion into Lao culture. Your exploration culminates at the Night Market, adorned with handcrafted textiles from local and hill tribe artisans.

Day 16: Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang Tad Sae waterfall

In the morning, venture into the serene countryside of Luang Prabang, where you’ll find a community-based rice farm surrounded by picturesque mountains and lush rice paddies. Immerse yourself in the life of a Laotian farmer, engaging in various farm activities or simply observing them from the tranquil setting of a traditional Lao rice house balcony nestled amid rice terraces and an organic vegetable farm. Nearby workshops beckon, showcasing the talents of local artisans in bamboo weaving, blacksmithing, and sugar cane processing. A tour of the organic garden will reveal the secrets of natural herbs used in traditional medicine.

Lunch awaits on the terrace with sweeping views of the rice fields. Next, your journey takes you to the enchanting Kuang Si waterfalls , a cascading marvel with three tiers that tumble into mesmerizing azure pools before continuing downstream. A brief stop at the Bear Rescue Center offers a chance to observe animals rescued from poachers and traffickers. On your return to the hotel, visit the Ock Pop Tock Living Craft Center, a hub where weavers, spinners, and batik artisans create high-quality fabrics and provide insightful tours every half hour. This locale also offers a captivating sunset vista.

Day 17: Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang elephant camp

Experience an action-packed single-day adventure with our top activities. Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel at 8:30-9:00 AM, courtesy of our English-speaking guide. Upon arrival at the Elephant Village camp, you’ll be warmly greeted and given a brief introduction to the majestic elephants.

The highlight of the day is your transformation into a Mahout, the elephant’s trusted guide. With two people per elephant, you’ll receive training on how to communicate and move with your gentle giant Laos-style. A hearty buffet lunch awaits at the Elephant Camp restaurant, complete with vegetarian options.

Post-meal, it’s time for the ultimate thrill – bathing your elephant in the Nam Khan river. A traditional Lao longboat then ferries you to the breathtaking Tad Sae Waterfall . Here, you can relax, dip your feet, or take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, though water levels may vary with the seasons. The tour concludes between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM when you’re transferred back to your Luang Prabang hotel, your heart brimming with unforgettable memories.

Day 18: Luang Prabang – Vientien

Vientiane Patuxay monument

Depart Luang Prabang by train C81, departing at 12:49 PM and arriving in Vientiane at 3:19 PM. Welcome to the serene capital city of Laos, Vientiane. Upon arrival, check in at your hotel and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the city.

As evening descends, immerse yourself in Vientiane’s culinary delights. Start with a refreshing cold beer and mingle with the locals at their post-work gathering spots. Then, navigate through bustling street markets to savor a variety of local delicacies, from noodles to fried insects, barbecued meats to fruity ice cream. Prepare for an authentic gastronomic adventure as you explore the finest Vientiane cuisine.

Begin your evening with a visit to a local beer shop for a relaxing sundowner. Sip on chilled Laotian beer as you watch the sunset over the picturesque Mekong River. These beer shops are popular post-work hangouts, promising an enjoyable atmosphere. As night falls, street vendors fire up their grills and commence their culinary artistry. Take a leisurely walk through Sihom, an area known for its small stalls offering delectable yet affordable snacks. This lively street market is a local favorite, particularly on weekends. Explore the stalls and sample Laotian delights such as Lao-style donuts, steaming noodle dishes, and pork meatball wraps.

Next, make your way to the bustling Ban Anou night market, a food haven in the heart of the city. The market comes alive in the evening, attracting Vientiane’s residents who gather for a meal with friends and family. Stroll through rows of food stalls and rub shoulders with the locals. The market is an ideal place to try exotic snacks like fried insects or savor classic Laotian favorites such as grilled pork skewers. After indulging in savory treats, venture to a hidden sweets shop for dessert, specializing in a unique combination of ice cream and sticky rice that’s oddly delicious. With a satisfied palate, return to your hotel for a restful night’s sleep.

Day 19: Vientien

Vientiane Wat Si Saket

Commence your exclusive tour at the tranquil Wat Si Saket , the sole temple preserved after the 1828 Thai invasion. Admire its splendor; its airy teak hallways house thousands of miniature Buddha statues. Proceed to Wat Ho Phra Keo and the nearby Presidential Palace for an external architectural appreciation. Explore the revered Wat Si Muang before visiting Laos’ own Arc de Triomphe, the Patuxai monument, offering panoramic city views from its rooftop.

Your journey continues to That Luang, Laos’ most sacred site, with its resplendent golden spire gleaming in the sunlight. After a local restaurant lunch, head to Buddha Park, making a stop to photograph the Friendship Bridge connecting Laos and Thailand. Wander through the Buddha Park’s diverse collection of over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues, including a massive 40-meter Reclining Buddha image.

Day 20: Vientien

Following a hearty breakfast, it’s time to head to the airport for your flight back home. Your Vietnam Cambodia Laos 3-week adventure might be concluding, but the indelible memories you’ve collected will remain with you for a lifetime.

Cambodia is Fascinating

CAMBODIA, a kingdom with a glorious yet checkered past, offers the visitor a glimpse of the mighty Khmer Empire that reined much of Southeast Asia for centuries. The famous Angkor Wat showcases one of mankind’s most remarkable architectural masterpieces while a trip to the great Tonle Sap Lake’s primitive floating villages reminds us how easily we take our everyday lives for granted. Its distinctive blend of Khmer, Thai, Indian and French cultures make Cambodia one of the most exciting havens for the historian, foodie and art aficionado alike. For the adventurer, there are plenty of undiscovered gems beyond the famous tourist cities of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh – from Kratie’s endangered River Dolphins to Kep’s laidback seaside atmosphere. For families seeking beyond the typical Disney holiday, few places offer stimulating experiences like Cambodia – from the Khmers’ yesteryear struggles to the hopes and dreams for the future. Cambodia, a stone’s throw from the bright lights and big cities, but a world apart in every way. Whether you’re seeking that uncommon honeymoon, an unforgettable family holiday or that tantalizing travel experience unlike anywhere else, Explorient has that perfect Cambodia tour for for you.

Myanmar is Pure, Undiscovered

MYANMAR, one of the last closed countries on Earth – until now. This former Burmese Kingdom in recent years did not so much open its doors but has removed them altogether, inviting the world in and racing to become Asia’s hottest travel destination. Still as one of the planet’s last frontiers, Myanmar offers the visitor a sense of adventure, an intriguing cultural experience with its delightfully gentle people, unspoiled natural beauty and stunningly beautiful temples, and a soon expiring glimpse of old Burma as it used to be. Cruise the Irrawaddy on board a luxury cruise and observe timeless river life; ride on hot-air balloon atop Bagan’s 2,000+ temple ruins and palaces; find your inner peace while relaxing on the shores of picturesque Inle Lake; observe Burmese timeless traditions in Yangon’s magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda. PRACTICAL TIPS

  • Passport & Visa
  • Climate & Clothing
  • Airport Taxes
  • Communications
  • Customs Regulations
  • Electricity
  • Food & Water
  • Health Matters
  • Transportation
  • What to Pack

A visa is required to enter Cambodia for U.S. and most foreign nationals. There are three ways for obtaining your visas:

On Arrival : You may apply for your visa upon arrival at Siem Reap (REP) or Phnom Penh (PHN) Airports. A passport fee and separate passport photo is required.

E-Visa : You may apply for your visa online. This is the easiest and recommended method so long as you’re entering Cambodia from one of the listed ports of entry. Please visit https://www.evisa.gov.kh/ to apply.

In Advance : You may apply for your visa at the nearest Cambodian Embassy . This method is less convenient and should necessary only for non-tourist visas (work, diplomatic, extended stay, etc.).

Climate in Cambodia is fairly consistent year round. The average temperature is 90°F during the day and 75°F at night. Two monsoons set the rhythm of rural life in Cambodia. The cool, dry, northeastern monsoon blows from about November to March and brings little rain. From May to early October, the south-western monsoon picks up moist air from over the Indian Ocean, bringing strong winds, high humidity, and heavy rains throughout the country. The weather is transitional between the seasons, but even during the wet season it rarely rains in the morning. Most of the rain comes in afternoon downpours. Visitors should be warned that roads in the northeastern regions in particular, can become flooded during the rains. Travel in these areas should be avoided during the peak of the wet seasons.

New Year’s Day – Jan 1st International Women’s Day – Mar 8th Cambodian New Year – mid April Royal Ploughing Day Ceremony – April/ May Labour Day – May 1st Visaka Buja Day (Birth of Buddha) – mid May International Children’s Day – Jun 1st Constitution and Coronation Day – Sep 24th Phchum Ben Day (Feast of the Ancestors) – late September/ early October (3 days) Paris Peace Agreement – Oct 23rd King’s Birthday – Oct 30 – Nov 1st Independence Day – Nov 9th Water Festival – November (three days) UN Human Rights Day – Dec 10th

As of April 2011, airport departure taxes for both domestic and international flights are included in your air tickets.

On Domestic flights, passengers are allowed 20kg (44 pounds of luggage per person) in economy class for most carriers. On International flights on major carriers, passengers are allowed two pieces of checked luggage but weight allowance will vary depending on your carrier.

Low fare carriers will charge a fee for checked baggage. The cost varies depending on the city pair and method of purchase (prepaid vs at check-in). When booking these flights on your own, be sure to pre-purchase this service before arriving at the airport as they will be much more expensive at check-in. If you’re booked on one of our Cambodia tours, checked baggage service of up to 20kg per passenger is always included.

Excess luggage fees will be charged if you check more than the stated allowances, and these charges are your responsibility.

International Direct Dialing at your hotel is available to and from Cambodia. The usage of mobile phone is widespread, prepaid telephone cards are  also available in post offices, hotels and supermarkets for public phones around Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The country code for Cambodia is +855; the city code for Phnom Penh is (0) 23, and the city code for Siem Reap is (0) 63.

Internet Access will be available at all hotels included in your Cambodia tour although charges may apply. Wifi is widely available in public areas including restaurants and hotel lobby. Mobile Apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger provide free/cheap and convenient ways to stay connected.

Most hotels provide postal services for documents and small packages.

The currency of Cambodia is the Riel. At the time of writing US$1 = 4,000 Riel (April 2020). However, for tourists, the real currency of Cambodia is the US dollar. Riel are useful mainly for tipping and small purchases. Since travelers are often given riel as change for purchases made in dollars, most find that they quickly collect enough riel for their needs.

Banks are available in most of the provincial capitals. ATM machines are widely available and dispenses both Riel and USD. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger shops and restaurants, though Cambodia remains very much a cash-based society so having cash on hand is a must.

According to related laws and regulations, the luggage of inbound and outbound passengers must come under customs supervision and control. Passengers should make accurate declarations to customs officials regarding the luggage they carry into or out of the territory.

Voltage in Cambodia is 220 volts although most portable electronic devices such as phones, laptops and cameras do not require an electrical converter. However, we do suggest bringing a set of adapters that can change the shape of the plug prongs.

Nearly all hotels featured in your Cambodia tour package provide hair dryers and other amenities expected in an international standard 4 or 5-star hotel.

Avoid all water that has not been thoroughly boiled or sterilized. Drink only bottled water. Supposedly, a plant in Phnom Penh makes all of the city’s ice using sterilized water, but to play it safe, avoid any ice. You should not eat any uncooked vegetables and do not eat any fruit that you have not peeled yourself.

Hotels featured in our Cambodia tours will include bottled water daily.

In General, there is a chronic shortage of trained medical help and hospitals in Cambodia compared to those in Western countries. Therefore, you should avoid treatment in Cambodia when possible. If critical healthcare is needed, Singapore, Thailand or Malaysia are only a short flight away.

The Royal Government of Cambodia does not require you to have any vaccinations, except for cholera if you are coming from an infected area. Please consult your doctor for recommended vaccinations.

Although the main tourist areas of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh are not malarial, malarial drugs are essential for tourists traveling deeper into provincial Cambodia. The best protection against malaria is to avoid being bitten in the first place: make sure to bring mosquito repellent. Check with your physician about taking a course of anti-malarials. If it is considered necessary given your itinerary, you might need to begin before your trip and continue for a time after you return.

Dengue fever, which is also transmitted by mosquitoes, is often mistaken for malaria. Its symptoms are severe pain in the joints, high fever, and extreme headache. required.

For more information and up-to-date information on Cambodia travel, please refer to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (C.D.C.) website .

Tipping is a customary practice in Cambodia at tourist establishments. From guides to drivers to bellmen. Most hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill. Taxi drivers do not require a tip, but the gesture is appreciated. For local restaurants, a ~10% tip is adequate and greatly appreciated. Since meals are very inexpensive at local restaurants (typically less than $10 per meal), the 10% will certainly not break the bank!

For your transfers and sightseeing included in your Cambodia tour package itinerary, we recommend tipping between $10-$12 per person per full day of service. This amount is to be split between the guide and driver at a 2:1 ration. You may, of course, adjust this amount up or down depending on the level of service you received.

All ground transportation is included in our Cambodia tour packages and are provided via private car and guides. In each city, a local English-speaking guide will meet you upon arrival and handle all arrangements, including sightseeing commentary, while you are in that city.

Taxis can be hired in main cities. However, Tuk Tuks, cyclos (tricycles) or motodops (motorcycles) are an inexpensive alternative and provide a slower but charming method of exploring the cities. But be sure to first negotiate the fare before getting on. Other forms of public transportation (trains, buses, boats) are available but not recommended.

Bring light clothing that is easy to wash and iron. Sandals and light shoes are adequate. A sweater is handy for cool season nights and drastically air-conditioned buildings.

Other essential items include: Valid Passport. Copy of Your Airline Ticket. Your E-Visa (if applicable). Your Medicines. Departure documents. Camera(s) and portable electronic devices such as tablets, mobile phones or laptops. Sunscreen/Tan lotion. Pocket size Kleenex. Extra luggage locks/keys. Folding Umbrella. Comfortable walking shoes

On Domestic flights, passengers are allowed 44 pounds of luggage per person. On International flights, passengers are allowed two pieces of checked luggage. Excess luggage fees will be charged if you check more than the stated allowances, and these charges are your responsibility.  At most major airports, baggage carts are available for your luggage, usually for a small additional fee.

Laos has only two seasons, dry season starts from November to March and rainy season starts from June to October, which means that Laos can be visited throughout the year.

Shorts, short skirts or revealing clothing are not appropriate especially when visiting temples or any religious site. Laos is a conservative Buddhist culture and improper dress can be offensive. Please dress with respect for the local culture. Lightweight, easy to care clothes of cotton and cool fabrics are ideal all year round. A pullover or jacket from November to February is recommended, especially when traveling to the northern part of Laos.  Wear sensible walking shoes which can be easily removed when required. Sandals, thongs or flip-flops (available locally) are very convenient footwear.

International calling and fax facilities are available but limited to major towns and hotels. Internet cafes are also available in major towns. However, the speed maybe slow.

Internet Access will be available at all hotels included in your Laos tour although charges may apply. Wifi is widely available in public areas including restaurants and hotel lobby. Mobile Apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger provide free/cheap and convenient ways to stay connected.

Postal services is reliable but can be slow, but outgoing mail is fairly reliable and inexpensive.

The local currency is the kip. The US dollar and the Thai baht are very popular alternatives that are widely accepted, especially for bigger purchases. The exchange rate at the time of writing is 8.9 kip to US$1, but it is advisable to check this rate before traveling.

It is not unusual to be quoted a price in kip, pay in US dollars and receive Thai baht as change. US dollars and Thai baht can be changed at hotels, banks or any foreign exchange shop licensed by the Bank of Lao PDR.

Most local shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards. Visa, Master Card and American Express payment facilities are increasingly being set up throughout the country. A surcharge is usually added.

ATMs are fairly prevalent in tourist cities but transaction fees could be expensive, depending on the bank.

Your valuables ( jewelry, cameras, electronic equipment, etc.) should be declared on your customs declaration form upon arrival. Receipt of purchase and an export permit voucher for locally bought goods such as gems and jewelry may be required upon departure.

Voltage in Laos is 220-230 volts although most portable electronic devices such as phones, laptops and cameras do not require an electrical converter. However, we do suggest bringing a set of adapters that can change the shape of the plug prongs.

Nearly all hotels featured in your Laos tour package provide hair dryers and other amenities expected in an international standard 4 or 5-star hotel.

Although towns have access to safe water, less than a third of the countryside can claim the same. We recommend drinking from bottled water only. Hotels featured in our Laos tours will include several bottles of water daily.

Avoid all water that hasn’t been thoroughly boiled or sterilized and drink only sterilized water or soft drinks. All water and ice-cubes that are served to you in restaurants in the cities are safe for consumption. You should not eat any uncooked vegetables and do not eat any fruit that you haven’t peeled yourself. Make sure that fish and meat is well cooked.

The government of Laos does not require you to have any vaccinations except for cholera if you are coming from an infected area. In general, we recommend Typhoid and Hepatitis-A vaccination to safeguard against water/food borne diseases.

In general there is a lack of international standard medical help and hospitals. For minor ailments, the Vientiane International Clinic offers good service. For any major health problems we recommend going to Thailand.

Please consult your doctor for recommended vaccinations. For more information and up-to-date information on Laos travel, please refer to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (C.D.C.) website .

Tipping has become increasingly customary in Laos, especially in tourist areas – these include porters, chauffeurs,  tour guides, and in upscale restaurants. Foreign currency, especially U.S. dollars, is appreciated.

For your transfers and sightseeing included in your Laos tour itinerary, we recommend tipping between $10-$12 per person per full day of service. This amount is to be split between the guide and driver at a 2:1 ration. You may, of course, adjust this amount up or down depending on the level of service you received.

All ground transportation is included in our Laos tour packages and are provided via private car and guides. In each city, a local English-speaking guide will meet you upon arrival and handle all arrangements, including sightseeing commentary, while you are in that city.

Laos is a mountainous country with no railway and few good roads. With the Mekong River being such a prominent topographical feature it is not surprising that it plays a significant role in communications and life. There are slow boat services for tourists who want to experience life on the river between some towns. Speedboats are also an option for travelers with a tight schedule, though not always recommended.

Tuk Tuks are the most popular means of transport within cities. These 3-wheeled vehicles with two benches placed sideways in the back can be found everywhere. Taxis are not normally metered, so your fare is negotiable. Always negotiate before setting off.

Other essential items include: Valid Passport. Copy of Your Airline Ticket. Your E-Visa (if applicable). Your Medicines. Departure documents. Camera(s) and portable electronic devices such as tablets, mobile phones or laptops. Sunscreen/Tan lotion. Pocket size Kleenex. Extra luggage locks/keys. Folding Umbrella. Comfortable walking shoes.

A visa is required in advance for travelers who wish to enter Myanmar. Tourist visa for Myanmar can be obtained from any Myanmar Embassy or Consulate world-wide.

A new way for obtaining a Myanmar Visa is via its E-Visa service . This can be applied for online through the Myanmar government. This is now the preferred method which is both convenient and cost-effective. Approvals are usually returned via E-mail within 5 business days. Tourist visa are valid for a stay of up to 28 days.

The departure tax for international passengers is US$20 collected at the airport at time of departure. The amount and policy are subject to change by government authorities without notice.

Airport departure taxes of ~US$2 are collected on domestic flights within Myanmar.

Myanmar has three seasons. *Cool Season – October through February with average temperatures 20-24 C *Hot Season – March through May with average temperatures 30-35 C *Wet Season – June through September with average temperatures 25-30 C The ideal time to visit Myanmar is during the cool season. However, even during the wet season, Yangon normally receives morning and afternoon showers while rainfall in Bagan and Mandalay is very low. The weather around Inle Lake and in Shan State is quite pleasant all year round but cold at night from December to February.

Shorts, short skirts or revealing clothing are not appropriate especially when visiting temples or any religious site. Myanmar is a conservative Buddhist culture and improper dress can be offensive. Please dress with respect for the local culture. Lightweight, easy to care clothes of cotton and cool fabrics are ideal all year round. A winter sweater or jacket and socks may be needed in the cool season when visiting up country especially around Inle Lake and Kalaw when the weather can drop to near freezing during the night. Wear sensible walking shoes which can be easily removed when required. Sandals, thongs or flip-flops (available locally) are very convenient footwear.

International Direct Dialing is available at all hotels included in your Myanmar tour. The usage of mobile phone is widespread, prepaid telephone cards or SIM cards are  also available.

Internet Access will be available at all hotels included in your Myanmar vacation package although charges may apply and connection may be slow or unreliable. Wifi is widely available in public areas including restaurants and hotel lobby. Mobile Apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger provide free/cheap and convenient ways to stay connected.

We recommend visitors to bring US Dollar in cash only – larger notes receiving a better rate in exchange. Exchange of other foreign currencies such as Euros, Yen and Pounds Sterling may be time consuming and difficult. Authorized money changer throughout Myanmar will usually only accept US Dollars. The FEC (Foreign Exchange Currency) used in Myanmar as currency next to the local currency Kyat (pronounced “Chat”) is equal to the US Dollar (1=1) and can easily be used for payment of purchases throughout the country.

Credit Cards are generally not accepted in Myanmar. We suggest to bring a sufficient amount of cash for personal expenses. There are now ATM machines in the more popular tourist cities but transaction fees can be high. Banks are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and all public holidays.

Voltage in Myanmar is 220-230 volts although most portable electronic devices such as phones, laptops and cameras do not require an electrical converter. However, we do suggest bringing a set of adapters that can change the shape of the plug prongs.

Nearly all hotels featured in your Myanmar tour package provide hair dryers and other amenities expected in an international standard 4 or 5-star hotel.

Tap water is not potable in Myanmar. Only drink purified bottle water. Bottled water is readily available and provided by the hotels featured in your Myanmar tour.

Throughout most Asian countries including Myanmar, MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) – known locally as ‘AJINOMOTO’ – is still used in food preparation in most restaurants. For travelers that may be allergic to MSG, you should inform your guide when ordering if you do not wish it to be added to your food.

No inoculations or vaccinations are required unless coming from or passing through an infected area. Travelers should bring sufficient medication with them if required.

In General, there is a chronic shortage of trained medical help and hospitals in Myanmar compared to those in Western countries. Therefore, you should avoid treatment in Myanmar when possible. If critical care is needed, Singapore or Thailand are only a short flight away.

Vaccinations against typhoid and Hepatitis-A are generally recommended for traveling to Myanmar and Southeast Asia. These vaccines safe guard against water/food-borne diseases and are good to have for those who travel often.

The Burmese people are genuinely happy to help foreign visitors and don’t expect anything in return. But if a service personnel (waiter, bellman, etc.) on your trip was especially kind or helpful a gratuity would be a generous gesture and greatly appreciated.

For your transfers and sightseeing included in your Myanmar tour package itinerary, we recommend tipping between $10-$12 per person per full day of service. This amount is to be split between the guide and driver at a 2:1 ration. You may, of course, adjust this amount up or down depending on the level of service you received.

All ground transportation is included in our Myanmar tours are provided via private car and guides. In each city, a local English-speaking guide will meet you upon arrival and handle all arrangements, including sightseeing commentary, while you are in that city.

Taxis are available from major hotels and the use of mass public transportation is not recommended.

Bring light clothing that is easy to wash and iron. As most temple complexes require visitors to take off their shoes, it is highly recommended that travelers bring shoes (i.e. sandals) that slip on and off easily. A sweater is handy for cool season nights and drastically air-conditioned buildings.

Other essential items include: Valid Passport. Copy of Your Airline Ticket. Your E-Visa (if applicable). Mosquito repellent. Your Medicines. Departure documents. Camera(s) and portable electronic devices such as tablets, mobile phones or laptops. Sunscreen/Tan lotion. Pocket size Kleenex. Extra luggage locks/keys. Folding Umbrella.

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

Detour trips offer a different type of experience and max out at 16 people led by a local host.

Each group is administered according to our strict Covid policies which can be viewed here.

What’s included?

All essential trip elements have been catered to ensure a great time, with great people in great places. But you mean more specifically right?

Your accommodation, essential trip transport, and a good handful of meals are included in the cost of your Contiki trip (on most trips we offer breakfast every day, plus a hand-picked selection of authentic and tasty meals).

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

A day by day breakdown of inclusions and Free Time Add-Ons are available on the trip specific pages.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

What are Contiki's sustainability credentials?

Travel comes with responsibilities. That’s why we’re determined to travel sustainably and consciously, and that’s why we’re willing to take a stand on issues closest to our hearts. Find out more details here . With the help of our four-point Climate Action Plan, we're now on a journey to Net Zero - committing to carbon reductions and evolving to support the transition to a low-carbon future. Find out more details here .

Yes! It’s a requirement of traveling with Contiki that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property and Covid related expenses before you travel with us. It’s also super important to check that your insurance covers all of the activities you’ll be trying out, particularly any adventure activities (for all you adrenaline junkies). Now a group of longtime Brentwood friends are sharing their adventures from a recent trip to Laos. Read on for details, then find more travel inspiration at www.mercurynews.com/tag/wish-you-were-here/ .

Wish You Were Here

LAOS, CAMBODIA: Eight long-time friends from Brentwood — Scott and Linda Berridge, Scott and Kathy Dudek, Joe and Desiree Martinez and Henry and Colleen Torrez — journeyed to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam in March with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT).

Eight long-time friends from Brentwood -- Scott and Linda Berridge, Scott and Kathy Dudek, Joe and Desiree Martinez and Henry and Colleen Torrez -- visited Laos in March. (Courtesy of the Berridge Family)

The trip, which included travel by every means imaginable, from trains to sampans, tuk tuks, remorks and even the back of an oxcart, hit all the big UNESCO World Heritage sites, Linda says, while also “delving in a little deeper, both educationally and culturally, to meet the people of these countries and get to enjoy their culture, food and traditions.

“We spent a somber day at the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields, crawled through the Cu Chi tunnels in Vietnam and had a crazy night on the back of scooters in Saigon, as we enjoyed a street food tour.” Other trip highlights included visiting the Temple of the Reclining Buddha and Grand Palace in Thailand and Angkor Wat in Cambodia — “absolutely breathtaking!”

In Laos, the group enjoyed a dinner hosted by a local family, visited the COPE Laos center for bombing victims, and stopped in a small village (pictured) on the Mekong River.

TRAVEL TIPS:  “Your credit card is good at restaurants and hotels, (but) the local shops all want local money. ATMs are easy to use. We switched currency in each country from bhat, kip, riel to dongs! Get a currency converter app for sure.”
