David Rush set out to break 52 Guinness World Records in 2021. So far, the organization has verified 43 of them.

David Rush of Idaho set out to break one Guinness World Record every week of 2021.

The challenge was simultaneously no small feat and nothing out of the ordinary for Rush, an author, speaker and entertainer who describes himself on his website as "one of the most prolific Guinness World Records title holders on the planet."

"He is the world's fastest juggler, the world's slowest juggler, and has the record for most bowling balls juggled, most consecutive ax juggling catches, and longest duration balancing a bicycle on the chin," according to his bio, which says he's broken more than 150 records since 2015.

Strange News

In each week of 2021, david rush from idaho set a guinness world record.

Rush has been promoting STEM for more than a decade through talks with students, educators and corporations. He told NPR over email that his record-a-week mission aims to inspire students who struggle with those disciplines by showing difficult things are possible.

"STEM is hard and when a student struggles with science or fails at math they may say they can never be an engineer," he wrote. "In 2015 I broke my first GWR to create a tangible example for folks to show that if you set your mind to a goal, believe in yourself, and pursue it with a passion, you can accomplish nearly anything. Going on to break an average of 1 a week is an extension of that to inspire kids to pursue hard STEM subjects and anyone to pursue anything that's hard."

Rush started the year off on Jan. 4 by stacking wet bars of soap with his neighbor, he explained in a blog post last week. From there, his missions included bouncing ping pong balls, catching fruit and marshmallows in his mouth, juggling and doing various tasks very quickly.

The Surprising Business Model Behind Guinness World Records

Planet Money

The surprising business model behind guinness world records.

"I crossed the 200 Guinness World Records broken milestone with one of the 5 hardest for the most kiwis sliced in one minute using a samurai sword while standing on a swiss ball," he wrote. "I revisited my very first record – longest duration blindfolded juggling, this time extended the record from 22 minutes 7 seconds to 32 minutes 7 seconds."

Some of his tasks involved partners. Rush said he broke a couple of records with his wife, and put a bow on the year by wrapping his neighbor in wrapping paper with the help of an accomplice, becoming the fastest pair to do so.

Rush also posted a video compilation of some of those moments:

A spokesperson for Guinness World Records confirmed over email that Rush achieved a total of 43 Guinness World Records titles over the 52 weeks of 2021.

No, You Can't: World Record Ideas That Didn't Cut It

Games & Humor

No, you can't: world record ideas that didn't cut it.

Rush explained that the rest of the attempts have been submitted to Guinness for review. The official verification process involves creating an application for a new record, having Guinness approve it, actually making the attempt and then submitting the evidence to the organization for review, which he said can take up to three months.

He said he currently has 10 or 11 that are pending review, and likes to have "a couple of extra in case any are not approved for any reason."

In the meantime, here are the world records he can officially add to his resume:

  • Fastest time to wrap a person with wrapping paper (team of two)
  • Fastest 100 m joggling with three objects whilst blindfolded (male)

The travellers complete their first mission in Brazil and one team's crucial error costs them first place: Biggest moments of Episode 1 of Rush 2023

Most of us travel to the other side of the globe for a relaxing holiday, but as host David Genat warned Rush will be anything but.

This trip comes with one massive twist – 12 brave Aussies will be blindfolded, deprived of both sight and sound with no idea where they're off to and dropped in some of the most extraordinary locations and festivals on the planet.

Stream every episode of Rush on Nine and 9Now.

Three teams of strangers, Team Navy, Team Gold and Team Scarlet will firstly need to figure out where they've been dropped and complete unforgettable cultural missions – dance raves, soccer games and drinking goat blood are all on the cards.

Rush 2023

The aim is to be the first to find host David Genat at the Escape Zone. The last team there must eliminate one of their own.

While you might be thinking it will be pretty easy for the contestants to simply Google their way to the Escape Zone, they're equipped only with their street smarts, a backpack of travel essentials and a couple of hundred dollars to spend on food and transport for four travellers.

READ MORE: Everything you need to know about Rush 2023

The leap of blind faith is worth it not only for the adventure but for the $100,000 and pair of round-the-world first-class tickets that await the winner of Rush .

With the aim of the game explained, let's look back at the biggest moments of Episode 1 of Rush .

The contestants are left in the first Drop Zone

At first it's pitch black (that's thanks to the blackout goggles and soundproof headphones).

But when the contestants remove their goggles it's stimulation overload – banging music, feather headpieces, a swarming crowd of upwards of 10,000 people.

Adam – a member of Team Scarlet – has no idea where he is. "Bro, where are we?" he yells.

For others, the colourful costumes, dancers and floats are an immediate giveaway and it clicks – "We're at Carnivale!" Madeline tells her Team Navy members.

But for Madeline's teammate Sofia, that still isn't enough information. " "Is that South America?" she asks.

Yes Sofia, you're right it is South America, but more specifically it's Rio de Janeiro, the capital of Brazil.

Meanwhile Adam – a 22-year-old transport driver – is still in a daze. "My head was pounding, didn't know where I was, had no control, the rush of adrenaline in my body was overwhelming, I was anxious, angry, happy, upset – I couldn't control it," Adam tells cameras.

"I've never been anywhere before. I felt so out of place it was crazy. I just wanted out," Adam adds.

Luckily for Adam that's exactly what the teams have to do – make their way out and find host David Genat and to help them they receive a clue via a message on their smart watches.

The alert reads: "Atop the mountain you'll see the light, redemption awaits it's a mesmerising sight."

Team Scarlet – made up of Adam, Fiona , Hamish and Najmah – are "running around like headless chooks" but they stop and gather their thoughts and realise the light they are looking for is actually the iconic Christ The Redeemer statue. After quizzing a collection of locals, they soon find out that a taxi ride there will be their quickest route.

They are first to reach David Genat at Christ The Redeemer. It's there that he instructs them on how to reach the Escape Zone – which is a "long long way away".

"Tomorrow you must complete one mission at Rocinha Valley – play a game of soccer against the locals and score one goal," David explains.

"If you don't complete this mission, you won't be allowed to cross the Escape Zone and will face elimination."

Team Gold – made up of CK , Priscilla , Lola and Saxon – trail in second place while Team Navy – made up of Tommy , Sofia , Madeline and Tylen – stagger in last.

Redberry Farm, Blanco, George | South Africa | Grand Finale

Team Scarlet make a crucial error

Travelling isn't just about sightseeing, it's about understanding other people's way of life.

That's why the teams are off to Rocinha, a favela or town on the outskirts of Rio De Janeiro – an urban slum of over 150,000 people crammed into just two square kilometres.

It's a bit of a culture shock for some of the travellers. Country kid Tylen admits "It's a bit scarier than we first initially thought, so stress levels were high."

Team Scarlet is out in front again and is the first to find the soccer field and score a goal against the locals.

They make a run for the bus to get to the next stop, Paraty, a coastal playground for Brazil's rich and famous.

Team Scarlet arrive in Paraty ahead of the other teams but they overestimate their lead and decide to take a break to get so food – and Adam, Hamish and Fiona are in the mood for burgers.

"I'm feeling confident that the other teams are at least an hour behind us, because the next bus wasn't scheduled for another hour," Hamish tells cameras.

EXCLUSIVE: Rush contestant Adam reveals he 'hasn't been anywhere before' ahead of round-the-world race

But what Hamish hasn't considered is that Teams Navy and Gold caught a taxi to Paraty meaning they aren't very far behind.

Najmah doesn't think stopping for burgers is a good idea. "Right now everyone looks for food but the mission isn't to look for food, the mission is to go and find the hotel to check in," she vents her frustration.

Team Navy proves that if you snooze (or snack)you lose and manage to overtake Team Scarlet and become the first team to check into the hotel.

Team Gold are hungry…to win and decide to forgo food and go straight to the hotel.

Najmah is starting to feel "very frustrated" with the overconfidence of her team. And when they arrive at the hotel and it's confirmed they are in last place, it's an unfortunate lesson learned for the team.

Rush 2023

"Being led by good old Hamish, I knew that something wasn't right, my guts were telling me something bad was gonna happen and to fall from first to last place is devastating," Najmah tells cameras.

"That burger was not worth it."

EXCLUSIVE: CK on why he wants to 'prove people wrong' on Rush

And while fellow teammate Fiona is second guessing their decisions she's looking at the situation a little differently: "We've made a big mistake, we probably should've got a taxi but if my aunty had balls she'd be my uncle."

The first contestant is eliminated

After their fall from grace it's no surprise that Team Scarlet is trailing in last place on the final dash to the Escape Zone at Paca Beach.

Team Navy race on foot to Paca Beach and Team Gold are hot on their heels.

But Team Scarlet, namely Najmah, are struggling with the hike to the beach which has turned out to be much more difficult than they anticipated.

"I'm gonna need to be carried out of here on a stretcher," Najmah pants.

Unsurprisingly they are the last to the Escape Zone and David Genat reminds them that means they must choose who among them is going home. And if they can't reach a unanimous vote, it will be left up to chance.

Najmah is quick to nominate Adam to be sent home, noting that she thinks he's too inexperienced for the journey. But Hamish and Adam think Najmah should be eliminated, pointing out that she was a weak link on the hiking leg of the trip.

That means it was up to Fiona to make a decision.

The group returns to David with Team Scarlet's decision. "We tried to take the emotion out of it and just go strategy wise and based on that we voted out Naj," Hamish says.

EXCLUSIVE: Najmah reveals her one regret after being the first eliminated from Rush

It's a tough goodbye especially for Fiona who is gutted to have to have made the call.

"I didn't want anyone to leave really, but we're onto the next country now the three of us," Fiona says.

Rush airs on Sunday at 7:00pm and continues Monday and Tuesday at 7:30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now .

Oooo! Oooh! Hey, aren't you that guy from MTV?! YES...

I n 1991 during the height of my career in the nightclub business I was working in a club in Orlando called The Cuda Bay club. At the time, I had been working in the club business for several years. My partner in crime is known as Stan "the man" Priest (and he is still in the business). We had been together as a DJ and light jock for several years and through many different clubs and cities. We were known as Weird and Feared. During a trade convention called Lighting Dimension International or LDI for short, we both sat on panels that were open for discussion about our individual art form. I was voted Lighting Technician of the Year and Stan became a Billboard ® reporter. In that same year Disney ® teamed up with MTV ® to stage a state wide dance contest to be held at the newly opened Pleasure Island club called Mannequins. Since I was given my name WeirDave by another DJ (Thanks Seb !) due to my dancing style and over the years many people would come to the clubs we worked at to see me dance, I decided to enter after some additional coaxing from my good friend Michael Goldman who was working for Disney at the time as their Promotional Director. The contest lasted about a month. There were about 3000+ applicants over the stages. I won my stage and went to the semi's. After winning the semifinals I had one week until the finals. I was nervous because the songs that they had been picking for the contestants to dance to were not my style. I was hoping that out of all the songs that they were using that I would get lucky enough to get KLF's 3AM Eternal , which was the best one of the bunch back then for a gothic style person such as myself. As luck would have it, at the semi-finals, the song I drew was Marky Mark's Good Vibrations . I was not pleased but as I said I won the semi's so I just kept my fingers crossed for the finals. At the finals I did get the song I wanted but my shoe flew off during my audition! I was a little shaken but I was determined so I kept on dancing and .... I won!!! The Grand Prize was a trip to NYC to film 15 episodes of Club MTV !!! These episodes were the equivalent of 2 YEARS worth of shows and we did it in 2 days! It was a rush! So now you know how WeirDave (Weird Dave) ended up on MTV. Occasionally they show an old episode of Club MTV and you just never know you may just see me!
