La Tour Melas

Set on 27 acres surrounded by ancient, untouched oak forests, overlooking the Aegean Sea in central Greece, La Tour Melas is making unforgettable, award-winning wines in a very special way. La Tour Melas uses biodynamic, organic methods and treats the vineyard as a unified organism. This balances the interrelationship of soil, plants and animals as a self-nourishing system without external input. Flocks of geese and sheep graze the vineyard in winter to keep weeds in control, and bees begin pollinating the surrounding flowers in spring. In harmony with the astronomical planting calendar, artisan wine growers choose the precise phase of the moon for cultivating, pruning, harvesting, and even filling bottles and racking barrels.

Varietal/Blend

Agiorgitiko 40%, Grenache Noir 40%, Syrah 20%

Expressive citrus aromas, with notes of peach followed by hints of menthol and white flowers. A good balance of acidity giving vibrant freshness. The Idylle has a pleasant medium body with flavors of citrus, grapefruit and stone fruit. The grapes are carefully handpicked and the maceration time is around 8 hours. Then cold fermentation takes place for 13-20 days followed by aging on fine lees for 4 months.

Food Pairing

Ideal with lobster pasta, goat cheese topped salmon and margherita pizza but this wine can handle grilled meats and more.

Merlot 28%, Cabernet Franc 32%, Agiorgitiko 40%

Cyrus One presents a deep purple hue with a violet edge, leading with vibrant raspberry and dark red fruit aromas, accented by a hint of floral. The palate is introduced to blackcurrant and vanilla, with toasted oak nuances, creating a harmonious blend of spices. This wine offers a smooth texture and a well-structured medium body, characterized by its elegance and refined tannins.

Steaks with roasted potatoes, pork tenderloin with grilled vegetables and fresh herb bread.

Cabernet Fran 60%, Merlot 40%

Intense nose of black fruits with notes of eucalyptus and violets, the Cabernet Franc excels with its purity. Tension and structure give exceptional freshness and length to the wine. The tannins are refined, and the wine has a high level of savory fruit bound together in a velvety and deep structure.

Made from ungrafted vines that are over 100 years old. A beautiful ruby color with purple reflections.Intense and generous nose of crisp fruit and spices, then notes of tobacco. Gently revealing, great structure and clarity. Balanced flavors, with an incredible silky mouth. Complimented by the vivacious youthful aroma, it has a mature and delicate palate.

La Tour Melas

The Melas tower (La tour Melas) is located at Ahinos village, in the prefecture of Fthiotida. The property is at an altitude of 150 to 200 meters and is surrounded by pristine oak forests. In 2001, vineyard grafts were imported from France and Cabernet Franc and Merlot were planted . The vineyard is nestled by the side of the valley, in clayey soil, at an altitude of 160 meters. Careful pruning (winter and spring) and the viticulture of meticulous precision, result, each August, to an excellent raw material for La Tour Melas wine. Harvesting is performed by hand and only the perfectly healthy and ripe grapes are selected.

La Tour Melas is set in 11 hectares near the village of Achinos in central Greece, two and half hours drive north of Athens. On an altitude of 300m, the property is surrounded by ancient, untouched oak forests, overlooking the Aegean Sea . In 2001, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot vines were imported from France and planted. Initially, a stone water cistern was constructed for irrigating the young vines. Subsequent expansion works gave rise to the tower ‘La Tour Melas. Nestled on the side of a valley, on clay limestone soil, at 180 meters altitude, the area is sloped South East. This allows the sea breeze to cool the vines during the day, while the rocky terrain keeps the vines warm at night, thus creating an ideal micro-climate. ’.

About the winemakers

When Kyros Melas in Zürich had tasted from Chateau La Fleur, he took on a bet: He would produce in Greece a wine that would be at least as good. He began planting near village Achinos in central Greece. In a region without a tradition of winemaking. Kyros Melas found this very strange. Because the soil, the slope and the fantastic climate of the nearby Aegean sea, with evening breeze to cool the vines create a perfect microclimate for a vineyard. The growing inventory of quality wines of Greek as well as French grapes is living proof. La Tour Melas keeps looking for the ultimate quality wine, just as long until every possibility of the soil is being used.

We bet that we could produce a major wine in Greece – and took up the challenge. We finally decided to plant the vineyard at La Tour Melas on the outskirts of Stilida, 30km from Lamia, in the year 2000. Analysis of the soil proved it to be perfect for cultivating Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines. The terroir, the inclination, the fantastic climate, and the proximity of the Aegean Sea with its evening breezes to cool the vines, created the ideal micro-climate for our vineyard while we have embraced ecological and biodynamic principles in our agricultural methods and in wine-making. The sheep and geese of the farm help fight weeds, while at the same time that the manure produced is used to fertilize the vineyard and the bees from the beehives help to fertilize the flora of the estate. In 2006 the construction of the winery “hidden” inside a rock began, an ultra-modern gravity-driven winery while we are constantly investing to upgrade our wine-making equipment and methods. Following almost 20 years of hard work our expert winemaking team has enabled La Tour Melas to produce among the best red and rosé wines Greek terroir has to offer, while we have received numerous awards and medals. La Tour Melas has helped enhance the reputation of Greek wine around the world. Of late, we have been seeking to highlight the Greek terroir with old indigenous Greek varieties. We have produced wine from 100 years-old ungrafted, “franc de pied” Agiorgitiko (pre-phylloxera) grapes from Nemea. The resulting wine has been as remarkable as the terroir from which it comes. Furthermore, we have launched a rosé wine called “Idylle” made entirely from Agiorgitiko grapes. Our philosophy is that winemaking has no limit in quality, and we will endeavor over time to develop all the potential of our terroir. We do not just focus on the production of good wine, as Greek hos pita lity is part of our philosophy. For this reason, our guesthouse, consisting of 14 luxurious rooms and designed to be in full harmony with the scenery will soon be in operation.
