Camotes Island is a picturesque – and in our opinion, wholly underrated – island off the east coast of Cebu. Whilst a popular weekend destination for Cebu City residents, Camotes Island has stayed off the radar of foreign and even most domestic tourists. We personally think it has a lot to offer, which is why we’ve rounded up the 9 best Camotes Island tourist spots to check off your list if you’re planning a visit to this beautiful island.

Camotes Island is actually comprised of four separate islands – the main three which are Pacijan, Poro and Ponson, as well as Tulang Diot, a tiny island off the northern tip of Pacijan. Pacijan and Poro islands are connected by a causeway, so it’s easy to travel between the two on land. Ponson is separated from the others, and for this reason we didn’t get to explore it as we stuck to the two that were easy to go between.

Camotes Islands is a popular weekend destination for mainland Cebu, so we recommend avoiding weekends and public holidays for a much quieter island. You’ll also want to aim for the dry season from November – April. 

How to get to Camotes Island Cebu

The most common and convenient way to get to Camotes Island is by fast craft from Mactan, Cebu. There are ferries twice daily, and it only takes 1.5 hours to reach Consuelo port on Pacijan Island. If you would like to bring your own vehicle to Camotes Island, then you can catch the roro ferry from Danao, which is only about an hour north of Cebu City.

9 Best Camotes Island Tourist Spots

1. camotes island caves.

One of the best things about Camotes Island Cebu is its density of caves. There are at least eight caves that are known about, and likely many more yet to be discovered. These caves are major Camotes Island tourist spots, and we’ve been lucky enough to visit five out of eight.

The most popular – and biggest – of these caves is Bukilat Cave, an enormous subterranean cavern with a natural body of water at its base. Bukilat Cave gets all the limelight because of how large it is, but the other caves are also very interesting with some even better to swim in.

2. Santiago White Beach

The Camotes Island coastline is ringed with stunning beaches, the most famous of which is Santiago White Beach, also known as Santiago Bay. This beautiful cove stretches out for hundreds of metres, and when the tide is high it makes for the perfect spot to wade in crystal clear, shallow water.

If you like to keep active at the beach, you can join a game of beach volleyball or rent a kayak from the beach vendors. And, if you stay until sunset you can watch the sky turn golden as you enjoy some fresh grilled seafood and maybe even a bit of karaoke if your heart desires.

To make the most of your visit to Santiago White Beach, we recommend spending a night or two at Santiago Bay Garden & Resort. Not only is it the premier resort on Camotes Island, but it has a killer view overlooking Santiago White Beach.

3. Bakhaw Beach

If you fancy a more secluded and quieter beach, then Bakhaw Beach is probably more your style. It’s one of the most underrated Camotes Island tourist spots, but definitely our favourite beach on the island. A mostly undeveloped coastline of coconut trees runs along the length of powder-soft white sand and turquoise waters.

There are no facilities at Bakhaw Beach, so you might want to pack a picnic lunch and some water. The road also isn’t very well developed so if you’re driving a car you’ll have to park it at a nearby house and walk the rest of the way through what we presume is private property. As it’s so quiet, you likely won’t run into any other tourists, but be prepared to share this paradise with the locals.

4. Tulang Diot Island

The tiny island of Tulang Diot Island is one of the best Camotes Island tourist spots thanks to its amazing white sandy beach and azure blue water. Separated from Pacijan Island by a narrow channel of water, you’ll need to hire a boat to take you across to Tulang Diot Island. It’s only a 5 – 10 minute trip from Tulang Dako Beach on the mainland to Tulang Diot Beach on the islet.

The facilities on the island are very minimal, but that’s all part of its charm. There’s a small community that call Tulang Diot Island home, but aside from that there is very little on the island. Once there, you can find a spot on the beach and enjoy the pristine conditions for snorkelling and beach bumming. If you plan on spending the day there, there’s not much in the way of food so be sure to pack a lunch or stock up on snacks at a sari-sari store on the island.

5. Buho Rock Resort

Buho Rock Resort is more than just accommodation, it’s one of the most popular Camotes Island tourist spots for thrill seekers. The resort itself isn’t the attraction, it’s the adjacent rock connected by bridge which draws in the crowd.

Buho Rock Resort has been developed as a cliff diving destination, with multiple platforms of varying heights for adrenaline junkies. You can try your hand at diving into the vibrant blue sea, or find a seat at a picnic table and watch the action unfold. Keep in mind it’s best to visit Buho Rock Resort during high tide if you’re planning to jump.

Fortunately, if you’re wanting to explore the rockpools below but don’t have the desire to send it off a cliff, you can take a staircase down to the bottom and check out the surrounding rock pools.

Entrance Fee: When we visited it was under construction so there was no entrance fee but be prepared to pay around 20 PHP if it has reopened.

6. Lake Danao

Lake Danao is another must-visit Camotes Island tourist spot to add to your itinerary. This serene lake is in the northern part of Pacijan Island, about 15 minutes from San Francisco Port. Affectionately known by locals as Lovers Lake, Lake Danao has a reputation for being a popular date destination for young couples.

The best way to enjoy Lake Danao is by boat, kayak, or other types of interesting floatation devices available for hire at several rentals along the shore. If you’re looking for more of a thrill, there’s also a zipline from one side of the lake to the other. After working up a sweat, you can fuel up on food at the restaurant, serving up classic Filipino dishes.

7. Busay Falls

What’s a travel guide without a waterfall! Busay Falls is a small but beautiful cascade on Poro Island in Camotes. One of only two waterfalls in Camotes – Panganuron Falls being the other – Busay Falls is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

You’ll only be able to take your motorbike or car so far, and then you’ll be required to hike around 10 minutes to Busay Falls. The hike isn’t terribly challenging, but it does require two river crossings so be sure to wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet.

Whilst not a very big waterfall, the water at Busay Falls is a beautiful Gatorade blue like many of the other waterfalls in Cebu, making it an awesome spot to have a refreshing dip. At the top of the first waterfall is a cave with another tier and swimming hole inside, which you can potentially climb beyond, but we never made it that far.

8. AGORA Market & San Francisco Bay Walk

Your trip to Camotes Island in Cebu wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the AGORA Market along the San Francisco Baywalk, one of the top Camotes Island tourist spots. Located immediately before the causeway from Pacijan to Poro Island, here you’ll find an array of delicious street food, fresh produce, dried fish and even toys.

It’s best to visit AGORA Market in the early evening once the weather has cooled down. You can take a stroll along the baywalk before grabbing a bite to eat at a multitude of vendors, selling everything from burgers and barbecue to pungko-pungko and lechon.

9. Century Old Tree

Last up on our list of Camotes Island tourist spots is the Century Old Tree in Tudela on Poro Island. As its name suggests, this 100+ year old Acacia tree is a sight to behold, with sprawling branches and widespread roots. 

At some point, the local government constructed a basketball court beside the tree, but after years of neglect, the court looks almost as old as the tree itself! The whole scene gives off very post-apocalyptic vibes and is an awesome spot to snap a photo whilst this majestic tree still stands.

A must-visit attraction on Camotes Island for those who love nature and adventure.

Paraiso Cave is another beautiful cave on Camotes Island, known for its stunning limestone formations and underground river. The cave is well-lit and has a guided tour, allowing visitors to fully appreciate its natural beauty. 

The river inside the cave is perfect for swimming and kayaking, making it a great destination for families and adventurous travelers.

21. Explore Tranquility and Refreshing Waters at Heaven Cave

Heaven Cave is a smaller cave compared to other caves on Camotes Island, but it still offers an excellent experience for visitors. The cave has a small entrance, but inside; Tourists can take a revitalizing plunge into the transparent waters.

With its exceptional rock formations and peaceful ambiance, the cave offers an excellent opportunity to unwind and de-stress.

22. Capture Stunning Panoramic Views at Canlusong Rock

Canlusong Rock is a beautiful rock formation on Camotes Island that offers stunning views of the ocean and surrounding landscape. 

Visitors can climb to the top of the rock formation and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of the island. It’s an excellent place to watch the sunset and take beautiful photos.

23. Discover the Natural Marvels of Holy Crystal Cave in Camotes Island (CLOSED) 

The Holy Crystal Cave is a unique attraction in Camotes Island that is definitely worth a visit. As the name suggests, this cave is famous for its stunning crystal formations. 

The cave is located in the barangay of Esperanza and requires a bit of a hike to get to, but the experience is well worth the effort. You’ll find clear underground pools, rock formations, and interesting cave creatures inside the cave. 

The cave is well-maintained, and guides are available to show you around and provide interesting information about the cave’s history and geology.

24. Take a Scenic Stroll and Enjoy Beautiful Views at the Baywalk Trail

The Baywalk Trail is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a scenic walk along the water. This trail runs along the island’s coast and offers stunning views of the sea and nearby islands. 

The trail is well-maintained and easy to navigate, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Along the way, you’ll pass small fishing villages, coconut groves, and local restaurants serving delicious seafood dishes. 

The Baywalk Trail is also an ideal spot to watch the sunset.

25. Experience Breathtaking Views at Mt. Calvary (TEMPORARILY CLOSED) 

Mt. Calvary is a small mountain located in the barangay of San Francisco. It’s a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape from the summit. 

The hike up the mountain is relatively easy, taking around 30-40 minutes, and is suitable for people of all ages. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the island, including the nearby beaches and neighboring islands.

Ponson Island

Ponson Island is a small and relatively unknown island perfect for those looking for a more off-the-beaten-path destination. The island has a rugged coastline, with several hidden coves and small beaches perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Ponson Island also has some interesting historical sites, including an old Spanish watchtower.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any tourist destination discovered yet in Ponson Island, Camotes. However, if we explore the island, we might be able to find some beautiful attractions in Ponson that are waiting to be discovered.

Tulang Island

Tulang Island is a remote and undeveloped island perfect for those looking for a true escape from the modern world. The island is mostly covered in dense jungle and has a rugged coastline, with a few small beaches that are only accessible by boat. Tulang Island is also home to several wildlife species, including monkeys, bats, and exotic birds.

26. Discover Tranquility and Serenity at Tulang Diot Island

Tulang Diot Island is a small island located off the coast of Camotes Island. It’s a popular destination for day trips and island hopping tours, offering clear blue waters, white sandy beaches, and a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. 

The island is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing, with plenty of shady spots to escape the sun. There are also small beachside restaurants that serve delicious seafood and refreshments.

These are just some tourist destinations to explore on Camotes Island. With its natural beauty and diverse attractions, Camotes Island is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Philippines.

Final Thoughts

As someone who has had the pleasure of visiting Camotes Island and exploring its various tourist destinations, I can confidently say that this little piece of paradise is truly a hidden gem in the Philippines.

From the stunning white sand beaches of Santiago Bay and Mangodlong Rock Beach to the crystal clear waters of Lake Danao and the mesmerizing rock formations of Buho Rock, there is no shortage of natural beauty to be found on this island.

But Camotes Island is not just about beaches and natural wonders. The island is also home to a rich cultural heritage, as evidenced by the centuries-old churches and ancestral houses that dot the landscape.

One of the things I appreciated most about Camotes Island was the friendly and welcoming nature of the locals. Everyone was eager to share their love for their island, whether it was sharing a meal with a family in their home or getting tips on the best places to go from a tricycle driver.

9 Tourist Spots for Your CAMOTES ISLAND ITINERARY

Cebu is a province with plenty to offer visitors. If you’re visiting this part of Visayas, make sure to include Camotes Island in your itinerary. Camotes has white-sand beaches, cerulean, mirror-like waters, and other natural attractions. It is also accessible by bus and boat.

From Cebu City, board a northbound bus and alight at Danao. The fare is around P30. After arriving in Danao, look for the port and get on a boat traveling to Camotes. Danao has a peaceful and relaxing ambiance where you can enjoy a variety of activities such as kayaking, horseback riding, and boating. There is an entrance fee of P15. Camotes Island has stunning views, and one you shouldn’t miss is Buho Rock. The formations rising out of the waters make for a dramatic mix of the beauty and rawness of nature. Take a few pictures and selfies, after which try cliff diving to get an adrenaline rush. You have to pay a P20 entrance fee. This attraction in Barangay Union, San Francisco is another cave to include in your itinerary. It takes an hour and a half to explore and requires more effort compared to Timubo. Your efforts won’t be in vain however because you’ll get to marvel at the subterranean beauty of the island. There are stalactites and stalagmites that take on different shapes and sizes. You don’t have to pay an entrance fee but be sure to give a “donation” to the guide for assisting you.

This island getaway destination is the perfect place to chill and enjoy. Tulang Diot may be small, but it can be loads of fun. Swim or wade in the aquamarine waters, sunbathe, build a sandcastle, do nothing, throw a Frisbee around or enjoy a slow, lazy afternoon. You can pitch a tent here for P150. There’s an entrance fee of P10. The island is near the mainland and a boat ride only costs P10 per way. You’d have to go to Tulang Daku first, the motorcycle taxi costs P100 from Consuelo Port. You can also rent a cottage for P500/day.

This subterranean wonder is a noteworthy addition to your itinerary because of its pool and the light that enters from an opening in its roof. The surrounding stalactites and stalagmites also display the raw beauty of this attraction. There’s a P20 entrance fee. To get here, head on to Consuelo Wharf and board a bus traveling to Tudela. The fare is around P70. From Tudela’s town proper, hire a motorcycle to take you to the cave for approximately P50.

This cave is already a developed attraction but is still worth a look if you have time to spare. This underground destination has a natural pool that’s clear, mirror-like and bluish. Dive into its depths, swim, cool off or just float around. You’ll need to pay an entrance fee of P50. It’s near Consuelo, making it an easily accessible tourist spot.

Quiet and beautiful Camotes islands are made of three main islands: Pacijan, Poro, and Ponson. They are named after the camotes or sweet potatoes, which thrive abundantly on the islands there. Ponson is pretty remote with its inhabitants living a really basic life, it’s also hard to get there as there is no regular boat going there. The majority of the Camote Islands tourist spots are on Poro and Pacijan. Both islands are more developed but it’s still mostly villages, there’s no ATM there and frequent power outages. These two islands are rich in springs, waterfalls, and caves, Pacijan also offers some nice beaches. The islands are still really far from being a big tourist destination. Most people coming to visit are people from Cebu. The people are really nice and super welcoming. Read on to for your Camotes Island Itinerary and to learn all about Camotes Island tourist spots.

Camotes Islands Tourist Spots

Poro island tourist spots, bukilat cave.

Bukilat is a really nice cave, not really deep underground but really large, and with a big lake you can swim in and openings to the sky, creating a mystical atmosphere. In the 70s mass used to be held there. The water is coming from the sea, so if you go during low tide (in the morning) who won’t see much water, it’s better to go in the afternoon.

The water of the cave is believed by locals to have healing effects.

Busay falls in Tudela

These falls are amazing, the color of the water is just beautiful, you must add it to your Camotes Island itinerary. Try to go in the morning during the week so you’ll have more chances to be alone. It’s really refreshing, pools had been carved out of the rocks, but it still has a ”wild” touch. You can also jump off the cliff, but be careful it’s not really deep. It’s an easy trek, about 10 minutes through banana plantations from the parking lot.

Mactan beach

The beach here is far from being amazing but its historical importance makes it worth a visit…

In Filipino colonization History, Mactan recalls an important battle that took place on April 27th, 1521, so prior to colonization. It marks the first victory of Filipino people over the Spaniards.

In March 1521, Magellan landed in Cebu, looking for a new way to get to Moluccas Islands. He “discovered” the Philippines. He befriended Cebu’s king who converted to Christianity and ordered the other chiefs to convert and help Magellan. One of the chiefs of Mactan island , close to Cebu, refused, so Magellan set toward the island with a troop of Spaniards to fight them. They were outnumbered and lost, Magellan was killed during this battle.

This is the official version but recent findings point to another site for the battle: Poro Island in Camotes, and most precisely in Mactan Beach. History students found documents stating that it took 2 hours for Magellan to get to Mactan Island, where it should have taken him only 30 minutes. Moreover a lot of Spanish artifacts have been found on Mactan Beach in Poro, unfortunately, they are now privately owned and you can only see them during special celebrations on Camotes.

Your Camotes Island itinerary wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Mactan Beach.

Poro church

Poro church is about 150 years old, the facade is made of stones but the rest is made of wood. Worth a stop if you’re passing by.

Pacijan Island tourist spots:

Santiago bay.

Santiago is a nice and quiet beach, good for swimming, you’ll just have to walk a while to get deep into the water. There are two resorts bordering it and a couple of beach restaurants with affordable prices.

Lake Danao is a really nice place to relax, you can rent for 50 pesos per head a kayak or a paddle boat or take a boat ride for 700 pesos (good for 10 people). There’s not a lot of ways to access the lake, the easiest is to go to Green Lake park activity center. From there you can walk for some time along the lake. There’s also a nice tower deck where you can get a nice view of the lake.

Timubo Cave

Timubo cave was a really nice surprise for me, I wasn’t planning on visiting it, but passing by, I thought, why not? I’m so happy I stopped, this cave definitively has a magical touch. You have to go down for about 75 meters deep underground, there are steps all the way so it’s easy. Brass yourself because, as you go down, it gets more and more humid and hot. You’ll have to go through two small pools of water, and then you get to the bigger pool. It’s super nice, you can swim there and go farther into the cave, try to bring a headlamp because the light doesn’t go all the way to the end of the cave. It’s a bit deep in some parts but you can mostly walk everywhere.

Tulang Island

Tulang Island is super nice, it’s a really small island with only a couple of people living on it, it’s mostly jungle and at the tip some white sand beaches. It is also a good spot for snorkeling. You can take a bangka for 20 pesos. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go there because a typhoon was coming but you can easily see it from Pacijan, it’s really close.

Borromeo or Bakhaw Beach

This beach is one of my favorite Camotes Island tourist spots, it’s secluded and coming as close as it gets to a picture-perfect beach. The sand is white and thin and the water is crystal clear. Only down point is that it would need some cleaning, but it’s mostly seaweed and not trash, so it makes it ok.

The holy crystal cave is no longer operating, it’s under “new management” and was closed at the time of writing.

Camotes Islands Itinerary

Two full days are sufficient to explore both Poro and Pacijan and all the Camotes Island tourist spots, you can add a day if you want to relax at the beach. On the first day, you can explore Poro Island. In the morning visit the church then head to Mactan Beach. After lunch, go to Busay Fall and finish your day visiting Bukilat cave. The next day, explore Pacijan. Start at Santiago Bay, then head for Danao Lake, you can have lunch there. In the afternoon, visit Timubo Cave, next go to Tulang Island if the weather allows it, and finish the day watching the sunset at Bakkaw Beach.   

Camotes Islands Itinerary: How to get around

The best way to explore the island is by motorbike, there’s almost no public transportation and it’s really hard to get information about it. When you get off the boat there are sometimes buses that are on it and that cross the island to drop passengers off. You can hitch a ride with them. Otherwise, you should be able to hire a motorbike, you should pay 100 pesos maximum to San Francisco. Bargain hard because they’ll charge more for tourists.

To rent a motorbike you can call Jims (09265015537) he’s a really nice and honest guy, or go in front of Isobella’s Inn in San Francisco. The price is 500 pesos for 24hours, they also usually can do half days. You’ll only find semi-automatic bikes for rent and helmets are hard to find. The roads are really good, some part may get muddy if it has been raining for a while though.

Camotes Islands Itinerary: Where to stay

There’s plenty of resorts there for about 1000 pesos, most of them are on Agoda, be careful with the “beachfront” especially on Poro Island, where it’s mostly cliffs and rocky beaches.

If you are on a budget you can stay in Alyanarah (300 pesos a night), in San Francisco, the main town. It’s a central location and from there it’s easy to rent a bike and explore the islands. The hotel is really basic and a bit noisy but the WiFi is super good.

How to get to Camotes Islands

From Cebu, you can take an express boat from the port for about 600 pesos or you can take a ferry in Danao for 200 pesos. To get to Danao from Cebu, take a jeepney (30 pesos) or an air-con van in front of SM mall.

There are also boats coming from Ormoc in Leyte .

How to get to Camotes Islands, Cebu

Option 1 (roro): cebu → danao → consuelo, camotes, 1. take a bus or jeep from cebu city to danao port.

From SM City Cebu take a minibus or jeep going to Danao City. Or, go to Cebu North Bus Terminal and take a bus going to Danao City. Tell the driver or conductor that you’re going to Danao Port , where you’ll ride a ferry to Camotes Islands.

We visited Camotes Islands on two separate occasions with different sets of travel buddies. We rented a motorbike and toured the island on our own during our first time. But on our second visit, we rented a multicab with a local driver that brought us to the top attractions in Camotes.

Here are some of the must-visit places in Camotes Islands to add to your itinerary:

1. Santiago Bay

On both our trips to Camotes, we chose to stay in Santiago Bay . This top tourist attraction in Camotes Islands is an ideal place to stay as it is close to the famous white sand beach and modern comforts with some of the best Camotes resorts found here.

We stayed in Santiago Bay Garden and Resort , one of the best Cebu beach resorts with a swimming pool that overlooks the sea.

2. Lake Danao

Lake Danao is a top tourist spot in the municipality of San Francisco. You can hike around the area or ride a boat across the calm, freshwater lake surrounded by lush greenery. There are local vendors selling snacks, too, if you wish to eat here.

3. Bukilat Cave

Camotes Islands is famous for its cave systems like Bukilat Cave in the town of Tudela in Poro Island. 1. bukilat cave – camotes island.

Of all the caves found in Camotes, Bukilat is by far the largest and the one we make sure you don’t skip out on. It is among the most sought-after Camotes Islands tourist destinations that draw visitors from all over the world to take a look at this underground attraction. A quick descent down stairs that are rocky will take you into Bukilat Cave, an enormous expanse of stalagmites, stalactites, and rock formations.

In the central part of Bukilat Cave, you will find a small Tidal Pool, so it is recommended to visit at high tide when the water is high enough to swim in. To the rear of the cave, there is an open skylight where the trees can be seen and the vines are swaying low. Below this is an altar made of stalagmite , which is where you can indulge in all of your Indiana Jones fantasies or simply take a picture.

2. Paraiso Cave – Camotes Island

Another spectacular cave located in Camotes includes Paraiso Cave , a turquoise swimming hole that lies below the surface. Paraiso Cave is the most modern of the caves located on Camotes Island , with a restaurant and resort constructed around the cave. There are places to sit through the underground rocks, so you can enjoy quite a long time inside the cave, with no fear of claustrophobia.

Paraiso Cave is deceptively deep with clear water it’s easy to believe that it’s only one foot deep. If you go at high tide, you’ll be chest-deep in the clearest waters you’ll likely see in your entire life.

3. Heaven Cave – Camotes Island

One of the less well-known Camotes Island caves is Heaven Cave . While not as well-known with visitors like Bukilat and Paraiso, Heaven Cave is an amazing swimming spot and is definitely worth visiting when you can spare the time. We came upon Heaven Cave accidentally as we traveled around the island without knowing of its existence.

We paid a modest entry fee that was 60 PHP to an elderly lady who was on the property prior to taking a trip down the underground path into Heaven Cave. The tide wasn’t quite high yet which meant that the water was very shallow, and we were forced to awkwardly get around the cave. An elderly lady advised us to be on the lookout for crystals. We were unsure of which direction to go however it was something to be aware of!

4. Amazing Island Cave – Camotes Island

The name alone says it all and it definitely isn’t a disappointment. In contrast to the other beaches, it has plenty of swimming space and is deep enough to suggest taking a snorkel and mask .

At the entrance to Amazing Island Cave is a narrow channel that is sufficient for swimming – you just need to keep an eye on your head because it’s a small space and we slammed our heads several times while stepping on the rocks. If you swim in the channel, it will open up into a massive cavernous pool . It’s the place to wear a Mask and snorkel ! Don’t worry, even if you’re not the best swimmer, you can still use the life jackets that are provided.

5. Timubo Cave – Camotes Island

Timubo Cave is by far the most underdeveloped cave located on Camotes Island and is little more than a hole located in the far-off lands, but that’s exactly what makes us so enthralled with it. Other than the concrete steps and lighting, the sole artificial intervention was the Catholic cave , however, there was no explanation of what significance this had.

A dark and a bit treacherous underground trail leads to an opening in clear, crystal-clear water . It was deep enough to warrant masks and snorkels while we swam and explored the cave’s floor.

How to get around C amotes

1.By Habal-Habal or known as Motorcycle

Good for couples. It is much better if you can drive it yourself.

It can accommodate up to 10-13 passengers . If you want to rent tour the island using the van, it will costs you around Php 2000-2500 or $40-50 per day .

3. By Multi-Cab

It can accommodate up to 8-10 passengers . If you want to rent tour the island using the multi-cab, it will costs you around Php 1500-1700 or $30-34 per day .

Should I book my Camotes Island Hotel Online?

My answer will always be YES . You can save money by checking discounts online. Booking before you leave also saves you time & avoids the hassles of bringing large amounts of cash during your actual trip.

What to prepare for a trip to Camotes Island?

Sunblock — If you don’t have a plan in getting yourself tan, then bring some sunblock to protect your skin from the suns UV rays.

Hats and Eye wear  — Protect your eyes from the heat of the sun.

Cellphone Waterproof Case  — You don’t want to drench your phone w/ saltwater.

Rent a GoPro – If you are in Cebu, my friend can rent you one here .

Food – Although there is a convenience store in the island, it is much better to bring your own foods and drinks.

Powerbank & Batteries – Electricity on the island only runs from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM

Tent – Even if you are not staying overnight, just bring. It can lessen your expenses.

Snorkel and Scuba diving gears – Bring your own.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

In my experience, March – June are the best months to visit Camotes Island since rainfall is less in those months.

Money Saving Tips

Get a good map and explore the city on your own tour  — You can tour the city at your own pace plus you can choose from a variety of options. There are a lot of awesome things to do in Camotes Island that don’t cost a dime.

Drive a motorcycle  — This is the cheapest way to get around.

Stay at hostels   or airbnb — If you are travelling alone or by group of 3, hostels are best for you. But, if you are travelling in group of 4 or more, then airbnb is best for you. I have calculated the difference and airbnb ones are best for group of travellers.

We came from Ormoc so our route will be – Ormoc to Camotes (obviously). Our Itinerary looks a bit messy because there is only 1 available trip in going to Camotes via Ormoc.

The Camotes Island group actually has eight natural caves. But, Bukilat Cave is the most prominent among these caves as it is the largest cave to ever exist on the island.

If you are into cliff diving, this is the perfect place for you. You can have your unlimited cliff diving or simply go on swimming under the beautiful rock formation at Buho Rock Garden and Resort, Poro, Camotes Island.

3. Swim Underground at Heaven Cave

A sign will greet you at the entrance saying “Heaven Cave”. You won’t easily spot it based on my experience because there is another entrance in the place. Just like the other cave, you will descend a couple of stairs to actually swim in the cave.

4. Swim and be amazed at Mangodlong Rock Resort

At Mangodlong, one can experience the wonderful sunset of Camotes. The warm color of the sun and the reflection of the beach make it very spectacular during the afternoon at this resort.

They say that there is an image of Mama Mary inside the cave so I went inside and see if it was true. Indeed, it is.

6. See the Wonders of Lake Danao Camotes Island

LAKE DANAO CAMOTES or the LOVERS LAKE is said to be the largest lake in Cebu province. It has deep blue waters and a serene aura with its singing birds and the breeze. Several activities can be enjoyed when visiting this place such as kayaking, boating, horseback riding, among others.

7. Visit San Francisco Baywalk

Among the nicest bay walks and the nicest place to spend a few hours (ideally during lunch and sunset) in Camotes.

8. Chill and Unwind at Santiago Bay Beach

The Santiago Bay Beach, a public beach with a long white-sand shoreline. The fine and powdery white sand stretches for almost a kilometer. 

The cave is very unique since it is connected to the ocean. If the ocean is in high or low tide, the water inside the cave is at the same level as well..

This is like the Virgin Island at Bantayan Island because you need to ride a small boat to reach the island. It is nice to spend time here as the beach has white sands.

Finally, I am bringing you my Camotes Islands Travel Guide. I recently visited the place along with my friends: a fellow travel blogger, Claire Algarme of First Time Travels; Maricar Dabao a tour guide/ tour operator of Viaje Negrense; Mr. E, an event organizer based in Bacolod City.

We stayed at Camotes Islands for three days and 2 nights. I will be posting a separate article on my DIY Itinerary for the benefit of others who would want to visit the place.

I included some specific information about hotels and tour operators. This blog is not in any way connected with these entities. Please direct your queries directly to them.

ABOUT CAMOTES ISLANDS

Known as the Lost Horizon of the South, Camotes Island is located east of the Cebu Island, Southwest of Leyte and North of Bohol Island. Camotes Islands is composed of three major islands namely, Poro, Pacijan and Ponson Island.

SANTIAGO BAY Has a relatively long stretch of white beach. It is very popular among tourists and locals because the beach has no entrance fee. Entrance: Free

CAMOTES ISLANDS’ CAVES Don’t be scared nor discouraged with the word cave. Caves in Camotes Islands are basically easy to visit. These caves usually have concrete stairs and well lit. I visited the following caves on my recent visit: Paraiso, Timobo, and Bukilat. I made short descriptions of these caves on my List of Tourist Attractions in Camotes Island. Entrance Fees: Paraiso Cave – PHP 25 | plus 10 if you will swim inside the cave Timobo Cave – PHP 15 Bukilat Cave – PHP 20

MANGODLONG BEACH RESORT Mangodlong Beach Resort is quite small but interesting at the same time. As of this writing, some developments are still ongoing at the place. Resort Entrance – PHP 40

LAKE DANAO Lake Danao covers around 650 hectares making it the largest lake in Central Visayas. Several water activities can be enjoyed when visiting these places such as Kayaking, boating and much more. Entrance fee- PHP 15

BUHO ROCK RESORT The Buho Rock Resort is another interesting place to visit when in Camotes Island. You need to take several concrete stairs to reach the water wherein you can do cliff diving. Entrance Fee -PHP 20

BUSAY FALLS If you want another experience apart from caving and water activities, you can also try the Busay Falls in the island.

Cebuano is the dialect spoken on the island. However, almost all can speak Filipino and can understand English.

There is an ATM machine at the center of Poro as well as Palawan for you to receive and send money to other places.

TOUR PACKAGES | GETTING AROUND THE ISLAND | ITINERARY

The islands can be explored easily using local transportation such as Habal habal, Tricycle or Jeepney. The moment you arrive at Consuelo Port, you will see immediately several vehicles on standby waiting for any guests that will hire them.

The Island is basically small so its easy to make your own itinerary. if you will be renting a tricycle or van, they can already help you on how to make your plan the moment you are there.

The drivers offer packages at very affordable rates.

Habal Habal – can be rented as a self-drive or with a driver. Rent for the scooter (habal-habal) is PHP 500/day exclusive of gas. A scooter can carry 2 guests.

If you are a group of 3 to 5, you can opt to rent a tricycle. Rates vary according to the places you wanted to visit. The driver can also recommend places to visit.

For bigger groups, you can rent a jeepney with the following tour packages:

HOW TO GET TO CAMOTES ISLANDS

For people outside the Philippines, the nearest Port in the Island is the Mactan International Airport in Cebu City. From the airport, you can take a taxi going to the North Terminal, Cebu City.

There are several ports around the Camotes Islands:

Poro is the main port, where the ferry from Cebu City arrives. Consuelo, for the service to/from Danao Pilar, for Ormoc and Leyte

Your route: Cebu to Port of Danao, then Danao Port to Camotes Island

CEBU TO PORT DANAO

You can take a taxi from Cebu City to Danao Port, however, it may cost you much.

Ceres bus and other buses are available at the Cebu North Bus Terminal. From the terminal take the bus that that will pass by or that goes to Danao port.

DANAO TO CAMOTES ISLAND

At Danao Port are several boats going either to Consuelo, San Francisco, Poro or Kawit. There are boat transport services namely; Shuttle Super Ferry, Jomalia Shipping Lines and some pump boats (Ave Maria, Santo Nino de Cebu) Boat fares range from 150 pesos to 300 pesos (one-way ticket price)

SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY The Super Shuttle Ferry goes once a day from Danao to Consuelo and once to Poro. There is also one boat a day going back from Consuelo to Danao and one from Poro to Danao.

• Danao to Consuelo – 6:30 am
• Danao to Poro – 1:00 pm
• Consuelo to Danao – 10:00 am
• Poro to Danao – 5:00 pm

Rates are almost the same for both shipping lines.

Upon arrival on Camotes Island, plenty of motorcycle drivers (habal-habal drivers) will be waiting for you. Charges for motorcycle transportation are at a standard fixed rate to every destination. Hence, it may be difficult to bargain.

Lastly, transportation costs in getting around the island might cost more than standard rates compared to going around the city.
