UAE residents planning to travel to Japan no longer need to visit the Japanese embassy to apply for a visa. The Asian destination has introduced eVisas for UAE residents, as well as for Saudi residents and nationals.

Effective immediately, Japan has eased visa regulations for travellers from the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Tourists keen on exploring Tokyo’s neon streets, Kyoto 's temples and shrines, or the snow-covered slopes of Hokkaido can apply online for a short-term tourist visa that allows stays of up to 90 days.

No screenshots or print outs of the visa are required. Instead, travellers will access Japan's eVisa website on arrival in the country to show approved documents to immigration authorities.

The easing of travel rules for visitors from the Gulf region follows visa-free regulations for Emirati travellers that have been in place since November.

Citizens from 68 other nationalities, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and several countries across Europe, are also exempt from applying for a visa to travel to Japan.

“I am delighted with the commencement of the online applications for short-term stay visas in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as the visa waiver arrangements for short — term stay for Qatari nationals, as it will ease the process to visit Japan for touristic purposes,” said Kobayashi Daisuke, executive director of Japan National Tourism Organisation in Dubai.

Earlier this month, Emirates resumed flights to Tokyo-Haneda airport, the Dubai airline's third destination in the country. The service joins Emirates' daily A380 flights to Tokyo-Narita and daily Boeing 777 fights to Osaka. at Japanese embassies or Consulate-Generals and can then travel visa free to Japan for short -term visits over a period of three years.

Qatari nationals are also able to travel easier to Japan as authorities have added a visa waiver registration for travellers from the Gulf country. Before travelling, Qatari nationals should register their passport details at Japanese embassies or Consulate-Generals and can then travel visa free to Japan for short term visits over a period of three years.

Japan is also set to drop its last remaining Covid-19 regulations for travellers.

From May 8, visitors from overseas will no longer need to provide proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test when arriving in the country.

Japan introduced some of the toughest travel restrictions after the Covid-19 pandemic as the country effectively sealed off its borders to non-residents. Since the lifting of restrictions, airlines around the world have added more flights to Japan to satisfy traveller demand.

Earlier this month Emirates resumed flights to Tokyo-Haneda airport, the Dubai airline's third destination in the country. The service joins Emirates' daily A380 flights to Tokyo-Narita and daily Boeing 777 fights to Osaka.

All UAE residents who are required to obtain visas to visit Japan no longer have to go to consulate-general in Dubai or the embassy in Abu Dhabi. Now, the application can be done online.

Since November 2022, UAE nationals have not been required to apply for visas to visit Japan. The full visa waiver for Emiratis has been successful, and now, this new measure will ease travel for many other residents of the country.

Japanese authorities on Tuesday announced that effective immediately, UAE residents may now apply for an eVisa through a dedicated website. Here's how the new paperless process goes:

  • Log into https://www.evisa.mofa.go.jp.
  • Upon successful submission, a digital confirmation visa will be sent to the applicant.
  • When entering Japan immigration, the eVisa holder needs to simply log on to the Japan eVISA website and show the visa.
  • No screenshots or printouts of the page will be accepted.
  • For further details on how to apply online, check out the instructional video on the platform.

This digital process has also been rolled out for residents of Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, the Japanese government has announced that it will cease Covid-19-related entry requirements to the country from May 8. This means travellers no longer need to provide proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test from May 8 onwards.

  • UAE: Visa-free entry to Japan from November 1 for Emiratis

Travel has also been eased for Qatari nationals, who can now have their passports registered at Japanese embassies, consulate-generals or consulates. Upon registration, applicants will then receive a 'Visa Waiver Registration' seal within their passport, which will entitle them to multiple short-term stays in Japan without a need for a visa for a period of 3 years (or expiration date of the passport).

Kobashi Daisuke, executive director of the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) in Dubai, said: “I am delighted with the commencement of the online applications for short-term stay visas in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as the visa waiver arrangements for short–term stay for Qatari nationals, as it will ease the process to visit Japan for touristic purposes.

"It is also especially timely as these measures have been activated in time for Eid travel, with visitors to Japan in the months of April and May able to enjoy and make the most of the spectacular spring climate and striking new green verdant landscapes."

Travel to Japan from GCC countries has been steadily increasing, making it one of the few international markets showing post-Covid recovery levels, Daisuke said.

Current figures even surpassed the number of visitors in 2019. "With further resumption of the Japan routes by major airlines, I am confident that the upward demand for travelling to Japan will continue," he added.

Table of Contents

Understanding the Japan eVisa

The eVisa is an online visa application system introduced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. It allows eligible foreign nationals residing in certain countries, including the UAE, to apply for a short-term tourist visa online through the official eVisa platform (www.evisa.mofa.go.jp). The purpose of the eVisa is to streamline the visa application process and make it more convenient for travellers.

Who Needs the e-Visa for Japan?

UAE residents are eligible to apply for the Japan eVisa. However, it’s important to note that if your nationality is eligible for visa-free travel to Japan, you do not need to apply for an eVisa. There are over 69 countries that have visa exemption arrangements with Japan, and you can find the complete list on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Japan eVisa Duration and Validity

The eVisa allows for a short-term stay in Japan for tourism purposes, with a duration of up to 15 days. The visa is valid for three months from the next day of issuance, meaning you must enter Japan within three months of receiving the eVisa.

Excellent Service.. Wow Japan1

Incredibly proactive & professional Mr. Arif working at Zabeel Star Travel & Tourism is truly a pleasure to work with. I found the company details on social media and simply placed a called and spoke to Mr. Arif. He listened to my request patiently and offered me prompt service for Chinese visa application, within the next 2 hours of us speaking. A messenger from the company collected my documents and gave me a receipt of payment and I was informed my passport will be returned with the stamped visa on 29th Nov. I did not have to call or follow up with anyone at their end as I was pleasantly surprised to receive my visa stamped passport, a day earlier than promised. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Mr. Arif and Zabeel Star Travel & Tourism. I recommend it highly for anyone looking for quality and effective service. Thank you for your services.
