How to Pick the Perfect Contiki Tour for Your Travel Style

Four years ago I found myself alone in Europe for the very first time and boarded a Contiki bus. Two years later I went back to Contiki for another unforgettable adventure in Europe. The two Contiki tours that I went on were both incredible experiences, but also two very, very different tours.

My first Contiki tour was a beast of a trip, where I visited fifteen countries in fifteen days and probably got fifteen hours of sleep the entire time. My second tour was much more laid back, where I had ten days to explore only three different countries.

Deciding on what tour to book can be an overwhelming decision, especially for first travellers scrolling through the hundreds of different options that Contiki offers. My hope is that this post will help break down Contiki’s different tour styles and have you choose a tour that’s perfectly suited to you and your travel style to make sure you have the most incredible experience in whatever destination you choose to visit.

What is a Contiki?

Let’s start at the very beginning for those who aren’t yet familiar with Contiki tours. A Contiki is an organized group tour exclusive to young travellers between the ages of 18-35, from all around the world. Contiki brings in travellers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, the UK, and South Africa. Group sizes range from 13-50 people and tours can span a couple of days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and even up to 45 days. As you can tell, Contiki offers a ton of different options – in fact, they have over 300 different trips to choose from!

Who Should go on a Contiki?

Contiki tours are perfect for anyone! Solo travellers , first-time travellers , adventure travellers, couple travellers , and experienced travellers who just don’t like the hassle and stress of planning their own trips.

Where do you want to go?

Contiki travels to six continents, so no matter where you want to go, there is a pretty good chance that Contiki can take you there. Choosing Contiki means that you’ll have a choice between visiting Europe, Australia, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Asia.

Most travellers choose to do a Contiki tour across Europe so that they can maximize their trip by visiting so many countries in a short amount of time; that’s what makes Europe one of Contiki’s most popular destinations! Contiki’s Europe tours offer the most diverse accommodation options (discussed more later), like hotels, hostels, boats, and tents. Most Contiki tours through Europe are bus tours, so you’ll be travelling across the country via a comfy, air-conditioned road bus.

Contiki offers tours across every inch of Australia including Sydney, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. Australia is another awesome country for road trips, so Contiki tours down under are also experienced on the Contiki bus.

North America

If road tripping across the United States or experiencing the natural wonders of Canada sounds like a bucket list dream to you then Contiki’s lineup of North American adventures are for you. Tours across Canada and the USA provide pretty comfortable accommodation options and the Contiki bus will provide your transportation in between cities and states.

New Zealand

New Zealand is another country you’ll get to experience via the Contiki bus. Tours across New Zealand also feature a wide variety of accommodation options including some of the most unique special stays.

Contiki’s tours across Asia will put travellers up in comfortable accommodation and take you to the most stunning cities from Japan to China, Thailand, and Cambodia. Travelling across Asia with Contiki means a combination of bus travel and flights between cities.

Latin America

Visiting beautiful countries like Brazil, Peru, and Belize on Contiki’s Latin America tours. You’ll stay in unique, comfortable accommodations, with flights in between cities to maximize your time.

Tour Styles

Choosing where you want to travel to is only the first difficult decision that you’ll have to make. Once you’ve decided on your destination, you’ll need to choose a tour style. Contiki knows that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to travel, so they offer 8 different ways to travel in order to suit your preferred style.

Discoverer – Go Everywhere

This tour style is perfect for people who want to make the most of their trip by visiting as many countries and destinations as possible. On these trips, no icon is left unseen, no city left undiscovered, no plate left thoroughly unlicked. You’ll go everywhere and experience everything, making this a true trip of a lifetime, regardless of how long your adventure lasts.

High Energy – Explore, Party, Sleep, Repeat

These high paced trips are crafted especially for the 24-hour traveller that’s looking to hit the major sights by day and keep the party rolling well into the night. High Energy tours are not for the faint of heart or those who enjoy sleep. 😉 However, high energy tours also feature some special stopovers and unique accommodations that aren’t featured on any other tours.

In-Depth Explorer – Live Local

The in-depth explorer is the most appealing tour style for those who are more culturally curious and interested in exploring the history of your destinations. Instead of visiting multiple destinations on these tours, you’ll focus on a specific region in detail and get to the core of a specific country’s culture.

Independent Insider – Designed for Freedom

This tour style is for those who like the idea of group travel but still want to stay in control of their own itinerary. The independent insider was designed with ultimate freedom in mind, so the tour is essentially a bunch of building blocks that you can mold to your liking. You can come, go, stay, and play exactly like you please to create your perfect dream trip.

Camping – Stretch Your Budget

This tour style is for you if you’re looking to make the most of your budget and stay abroad as long as possible. If you’re not someone who’s worried about the finer details of accommodation, this is definitely the most budget-friendly and adventurous tour style for you! These tour styles are only offered in Europe but will take you to some wicked campsites that are decked out with pools and bars making sure you’re still getting the authentic Contiki experience.

Sailing, Cruise, and Beach – Sun, Sea, and Sand

This tour style speaks for itself; crystal clear blue waters and white sand wait on these tropically inspired tours. On these tours you’ll spend your days snorkeling in secret coves and bays, exploring ancient port towns and whitewashed villages, eating delicious local food, all while handing out with your new Contiki pals.

Winter & Ski – Keep it Cozy

If you don’t mind the cold and are keen to explore the Christmas charm of some of your favourite destinations, then this tour style is for you. The winter season welcomes cheaper prices and fewer queues meaning you’ll save money and get to spend more time exploring your destination. Outdoor types can hit the slopes and experience skiing or snowboard atop some of the most stunning mountains in the world.

Short Trips and Festivals – For Life’s Moments

Oktoberfest in Germany, St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, New Years in Paris, these are just a handful of the holiday’s just can celebrate abroad with Contiki. These short tours last only 3-4 days but will be jam-packed full of excitement whether you’re celebrating a traditional holiday, cultural event, or musical festival. This tour style is for you if you’ve only got a few days to work with and are set on having a particular experience on your trip. (PS because these trips are so short, you can also tack them on to another Contiki tour!)

Accommodation – Ways to Stay

Contiki has some really rad accommodations that you won’t get to experience with any other tour group. Depending on which region you’re travelling to, you’ll have the opportunity to stay in a traditional hotel or hostel, as well as some special stays that are property’s exclusive to Contiki travellers and will offer an unforgettable experience. Your chosen trip may be one style of accommodation or a combo of a few.

As a rule of thumb, the closer you are to downtown, the more basic your accommodation will be because you’ll be paying for location and not necessarily the highest amenities. However, as you get further outside of the downtown core, the quality of your accommodation will increase, but you’ll need transportation to get most places. On your Contiki tour, you’ll either be sharing a room with 1-3 people, with a maximum of 4 permitted in a single room. For the most part, you’re bunking with one other person. Unless you really must have a private room, I wouldn’t recommend paying the additional cost for the upgrade. Especially as a solo traveller, having a roommate is really fun and you’ll have an instant travel BFF before your tour even begins!

For any other trip planning process, I would normally say that budget is one of the first things to consider. At least for most people, budget will determine where you go, what type of accommodation you stay in, how long you go, and how many extra activities you do. But with Contiki offering over 300 different tour options, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find at least one trip that will fit whatever budget you’re working with.

Contiki’s short 3 and 4 day trips start at $400, while some of their two-week trips are around the $2200 mark, and their longest trips come in at around $5000. With that being said, it’s important to consider how your budget stacks up with your expectations. If you want to go on a two week trip of a lifetime across Europe in hotels, but all you can afford is Contiki’s 4-day Oktoberfest tour in hostels, you’ll have to decide whether you’re willing to compromise and see only one country, or if you’ll put off your trip for a little bit until you can increase your savings.

It’s also important to have a look to the “me-time optionals” offered with each tour. These excursions are not included in the price but are often tour highlights that you won’t want to miss. I recommend researching the ahead of time and determining which ones really are “can’t miss” experiences and including them in your budget, or if you’re more comfortable, you can forgo them and try to find a cheaper alternative on your own. I talk more about Contiki’s “me-time optionals” in my complete Contiki review HERE .

Finally, be sure to account for how many meals are included in your tour. In my experience, most breakfasts were covered in the cost of the tour, as well as a dinner or two. But for most lunches and dinners you’ll be on your own, so be sure to account for food in your budget.

Contiki also has a lot of different deals to keep an eye out for including last minute deals, where tours are crazy reduced for trips leaving within the next couple of weeks. If you can make a quick decision to travel within the next couple of weeks you may be able to save a few hundred dollars off of your tour.

And, if you go on a Contiki and absolutely love it, Contiki also offers discounts for returning travelers.

Tour operator, exodus travels.

It is all about adventure. That is what Exodus was founded upon and what the company is still all about. Discovering countries, cultures, environments, cities, mountain ranges, deserts, coasts and jungles; exploring this amazing planet we all live on.

At Exodus, we know what makes you tick when it comes to holidays. It’s a desire shared by so many others. A yearning to visit new places and come home with a real sense of what they’re all about. This means delving into local traditions, cultures, cuisine, lifestyles – anything that contributes to its unique identity. At the same time, we always remember that we are only guests. So we travel courteously and respectfully, in smaller groups to minimise our impact, to ensure that every Exodus holiday is a beneficial experience for everyone involved.

This is a philosophy we take with us around the world, helping you reach some incredible destinations on 500 itineraries across over 90 separate countries. We also strive to provide as much flexibility and choice as we possibly can, making it simple for you to experience a very different holiday.

Exodus started life on 4 February 1974 when two friends got together to provide an overland truck to travel to the Minaret of Jam, deep in the heart of the Hindu Kush, the most inaccessible of the world’s great monuments.

All our office staff have a passion for travel and adventure, and between us we’ve notched up experience that spans 171 different countries. That’s not all. In their former lives, our team members have been professional archaeologists, wildlife guides, overland drivers, mountain leaders, diving and ski specialists and mountain bike gurus – so no-one is better placed to create tours that appeal to a wide range of specialist interests.

Their care in putting all the details in place really shines through too. Extensive planning, research, fact-finding and training are a sign of our commitment to providing a holiday where your enjoyment, value for money and safety come first. It’s a telling reason why we remain one of the leading worldwide adventure tour companies. It is no exaggeration to say that our tour leaders can make a world of difference to the enjoyment of your holiday – so we choose them carefully. The result is that, in 2013, 93% of our clients stated that their leader exceeded their expectations. Where possible, we train and employ local leaders because they can provide invaluable insights that enrich the trip. What’s more, this investment in local staff really helps us benefit both them and their community.

If the change is insignificant, we will ensure that you are notified about it. Examples of insignificant changes include alteration of your accommodation to another of the same or higher standard. If we are forced by circumstances beyond our control to alter significantly any of the main characteristics of the travel services that make up your package you will have the rights set out below. 2.1 - We will contact you and you will have the choice of accepting the change or having a refund of all monies paid. You can also accept an alternative holiday, where we offer one (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). We will tell you the procedure for making your choice. Please read any notification of changes carefully and respond promptly as if you do not respond to us within the timescale given your booking may be canceled. 2.2 - If you choose to accept a refund then that is the only liability we have and we will not be liable for any further sums, compensation or otherwise and you are advised to adequately insure yourselves against cancellation for any reason

Please note that insurance premiums and amendments charges are not refundable in any circumstances.

Once you have put down a deposit for a tour, you are unable to cancel and re-book within a promotional period and we reserve the right to amend the pricing on any new booking you make within that time. With a rich Aboriginal culture dating back more than 35,000 years, it's no surprise Tasmania is one of Australia’s most treasured destinations.

This beautiful island state turns heads thanks to its thriving gallery and gastronomy scene, plus its bounty of natural wonders, like Bruny Island . Boasting some of Australia’ s finest beaches, mistiest mountaintops, loneliest patches of wilderness and most elusive animals, Tasmania is a nature lover’s wonderland. It also happens to be the only place in Australia where you can witness the spectacular Aurora Australis, the Southern Hemisphere’s answer to the northern lights.

"This Contiki was definitely the most incredible thing I've ever done.  Even though it's such a cliche thing to say or hear; the people that you meet and become friends with on this Contiki really make the trip amazing and everyone becomes such good friends in such a short period of time.  I had the time of my life and loved all the places we visited; Switzerland being my favourite. I've never seen anything as gorgeous as that country!!! For hostels, they were pretty good! And nearly all the hostels had free wifi which was a bonus! I went travelleing with my friend and it was good because we weren't living out of one another's pockets; we went off with our other friends and done out own thing sometimes which was great.  I wouldn't recommend a shorter trip than 18 days.  I found this to be a perfect amount of time to see lots of places but its also a great amount of time to allow everyone to become really good friends.  There was a lot of clubbing and going out at night which was lots of fun but I had a few quiet nights as well to refresh. The bus trips between each country (usually 6 hours) was when everyone had a good opportunity to catch up on sleep. I cant wait to do another Contiki and meet another bunch of awesome people.  Cant recommend this trip enough!! Friends for life!"

Canadian Encounter

"This was my first contiki and first solo trip. And it was just truly awesome. The tour crew Braden and Frank made the trip so fun aswell as all my new friends on the tour. I really enjoyed visiting lots of different places and Toronto and Pittsburg were my favourites. So will definitely be going back to those places to do some more exploring!! It's so hard to pick the best moments as I enjoyed all of it. If your undecided whether you want to do this. I would definitely say do it!! As life is for living!!!!! :)"

Asian Adventure

"The Asian Adventure was without a doubt some of the most amazing two weeks of my life. Flying into Bangkok I was so nervous yet excited to meet my fellow travelers. When meeting them everyone was a little quite, and by the end of the trip we were treating each other like family. Just like our trip manager said we would.

Every single part of this trip is so carefully thought out and planned to a t just to ensure that we have the best experience possible and that's exactly what it was. Traveling to SE Asia was the best decision I ever made, it opened my eyes to things I had no idea happened in the world, to natural wonders you wouldn't believe actually exist and to a sense of connection with people around the world who are so so so extremely different than us yet exactly the same.

Thailand, Laos and Cambodia are now some of my favorite places. Because of the $3 massages? Incredible food? Heart racing adventures? Or beautiful scenery? Of course because of all of those things. But most importantly because of the like minded, beautiful people I was lucky enough to meet and experience it with along the way.

Once you see the world on this trip, you return home craving to be back in a place like this. Everyone is happy, everyone is peaceful and everyone is so generous. Everyday I think about my experience here and long to be back. Because of this trip I will go on to explore more culturally diverse places just like it and I will go on to see each day differently because this trip opened my eyes and changed my life as to what really makes someone happy and what really matters.

Seeing Asia by myself would have been great, however the one thing I tell people about contiki now before anything else is how amazing it is to have a trip manager. My group and I lucked out by having the most warm hearted, fun spirited, generous, and hard working trip manager possible. Chamani Weerasekara became more than a manager she became a friend. She was up early morning taking care of us, and planning everything for us. She planned extra me time and special dinners, she planned fun games and parties and I speak for everyone else when I say that she is the reason this trip was so outstanding. She went above and beyond her job description for us. You could see the light in her eyes when she would see such amazing places and see her light up when she felt accomplished knowing we were all so happy. She was one of the kindest people I have ever met and truly has such a good soul. She cares deeply for each of her little ducks on this trip and it shows.

Honestly, I did not worry or stress one time on this trip all because of her. She made my trip memorable and there is nothing in the world I could do or say to thank her enough for that. This will not be my last contiki because of her.

Book this trip, you will not regret it. You will look back on this trip for the rest of your life and you will crave more."

The Big Tiki

"Wow! New Zealand is the definition of wanderlust, our tour team (s/o Kellie and Aaron!) are exceptional humans, the me time optionals are epic, and my fellow travelers are now family. The Big Tiki was an monumental experience and it's true I have #noregrets.

This trip infinitely exceeded my expectations. You read reviews of Contiki saying "you'll make so many friends" and they are 100% accurate. I now have an amazing group of people from all across the world I consider family. We visited some of the most beautiful locations I have ever experienced. I find myself at a loss for words when I describe them to others and photos do not do these places justice--you much experience NZ! The people of New Zealand are the friendliness, funniest, and most big-hearted people you will ever meet. Contiki NZ also offers a wide range of me time optionals, so there is something for everyone and if me time isn't for you, natural beauty is at your finger tips, experience it!

Best Advice #1: Considering NZ? Find a way to do the Big Tiki instead of a smaller trip. New Zealand is an amazing country and the north and south islands are so different--seeing just one island does not mean you've seen New Zealand. You may be sad when people leave the trip, but you'll be happy you get to stay and make new friends!

Best Advice #2: Adventure! New Zealand is an adventurer's paradise, so take advantage of it! Go skydiving, try strange foods, stay out with new friends later than normal, and don't forget to bungy jump! This was my favorite optional; bungy is seriously amazing...you are in its home country, so go for it!

As Kellie says...leave your New Zealand Contiki fat, poor, and happy. As we now say, if all else fails...#crawltokellie!"

Great Britain & Ireland

"First things, DO THE FULL TOUR. This tour is made up of modules and most people regretted not doing England, Scotland and Ireland. Do all the optionals, the bike ride around Kilkenny was fantastic, going into all the castles, Jameson tour, the Scottish and Irish dancing evenings.  There is lots of neat things included in this tour like jumping into Loch Ness, good meals (although I don't know if I can eat another potato for a while), try the haggis (its surprisingly good). Also feed the hairy highland cows in Stirling, they are so cute. The pubs are great craic , drink some guiness and listened to live music. Benny was a fantastic tour manager , and Pete was a great driver( I don't know how he made some those small streets). The accomadations were all clean. I would for sure recommend this trip, and spend a few extra days in London before and after the trip , you wont regret it."

What to expect on Contiki, Intrepid, Trafalgar tours: 5 group tour myths

Even if you haven’t done the whole Contiki experience, you probably think you have a fair idea what happens on a group tour - but you’d be wrong.

Tours aren’t all about being “stuck on a bus”.

I’ve hiked the world, this spot stunned me

I’ve hiked the world, this spot stunned me

Even if you haven’t done the whole Contiki experience or bussed across a continent, you probably think you have a fair idea what happens on a group tour, right? Except, you’d be wrong.

1. ALL GROUP TOURS ARE BIG

Tours come in all sizes. It boils down to what you want from a trip: do you want to save money or do you want immersion in local culture?

Boundless Journeys keeps groups under 16. Likewise, Wendy Wu Tours’ Discovery Tours category has been designed to offer an experiential program with cultural experiences in lesser-visited locations with groups of less than 18. “They provide visitors with a more in-depth understanding of the region,” says head of product, Bernadette Holmes.

On the flip side, big groups often mean bigger savings as tour companies can negotiate better deals with hotels and the like. “This has to be a factor when clients are making their choice of group tours,” Gippsland Travel director Jacquey Turner says.

2. THERE IS NO FREE TIME

Despite a reputation of chock-a-block hour-by-hour itineraries and a 24/7 schedule, most tours today have a healthy amount of free time. Tour companies are allowing for later starts so guests can make the most of the city’s night-life, alongside options to skip activities.

Managing director Katrina Barry says at Contiki, the destination is the only fixed thing. “We include the key experiences people tell us they want, and the rest of the time is ‘me time’, where travellers get to explore cities at their own pace or simply relax.”

Likewise, Trafalgar offers a range of At Leisure itineraries, which include open time and later starts (no earlier than 9am).

3. TRANSPORT IS ALWAYS BY BUS

Touring isn’t only confined to buses. For example, there’s been a huge growth in travelling by rail, in particular for Europe.

Another trend is the rise of active-focused group trips where hiking and cycling comprise the main form of transport. Intrepid’s cycling tour bookings were up 485 per cent this year.

“Cycling is more popular across the board,” says Intrepid Travel head of business development, Daniel Pawlyn. “Old favourites such as Vietnam remain popular, but for 2017, we are introducing trips to Japan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.”

4. TRAVELLING SOLO IS EXPENSIVE

The trend for solo travel is seeing a gradual reduction of the infamous single supplement fee. Right now, Trafalgar is offering a 50 to 100 per cent discount on single supplements to make it more wallet-friendly. Boundless Journeys offers reduced and free single supplements on many of trips, and Wendy Wu Tours will match independent travellers – ones that are happy to do so, at least – to share rooms to avoid paying an additional supplement.

5. THE FOOD ISN’T THAT GREAT

APT head of marketing Justine Lally says poor dining experiences in impersonal hotel conference rooms are no longer the norm. “We have acclaimed chef Luke Nguyen curating menus and hosting special culinary tours. All of our river ships include fine-dining restaurants with a la carte. On land, special food experiences are often a highlight of the itinerary.”

A move away from full-board dining allows travellers to eat their way around a destination themselves. “It’s important not to have all meals included,” says John Cooney, owner, helloworld, MacKay. TravelManagers personal travel manager for Randwick South in NSW, Sue Kuti, agrees: “Many groups don’t include all dinners to allow you to explore. The local leader of the group can give you a list of great local places to try.”

Paul grew up in Britain and moved to Australia via a 2.5-year stint in the Middle East. Since leaving his TV job to become a travel writer, he’s checked off bucket-list experiences including trekking the Indian Himalayas, swimming with whale sharks in the Philippines and exploring private islands in the Maldives.

Travelling with your significant other can be an incredible experience, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges.

After almost a century of operation, the brand is about to disappear from Australia.

Based in Sydney, this Kiwi-born actor and writer has a thirst for adventure that’s taken her to some of the world’s wildest spots.

I went to Disneyland, but this was better

Contiki to launch first international trip since COVID-19 pandemic

In an instant, Contiki went from hundreds of tours across six continents to nothing. Now, it’s finally getting back to what it does best.

It was the news Australians waited a year to hear.

When New Zealand finally announced the trans-Tasman travel bubble last month, it brought relief to those aching to see loved ones and hope to frustrated travellers keen for an adventure.

At youth travel company Contiki, the announcement was its green light to get back to what it did best – helping young people discover the world.

Now, more than a year after global tours were aborted due to the worsening coronavirus crisis, the first international Contiki trip since the pandemic is about to set off in New Zealand.

Contiki is offering 11 tours across the ditch , with the first cab off the rank, the Sweet As tour of the South Island, departing on May 23.

The company brought back Australian domestic tours at the end of last year but international travel was what everyone was really waiting for. As soon as the trans-Tasman travel bubble was announced last month , Contiki saw bookings of its New Zealand tours skyrocket by 300 per cent.

“We’ve had trips in Australia, and people have been excited about seeing their own backyard, but the essence of Contiki is seeing the world,” Contiki Australia’s managing director Katrina Barry told news.com.au.

Contiki is about to relaunch overseas trips, starting with New Zealand. Picture: Contiki

RELATED: What it was like on first flight to NZ

“It’s really nice to see borders finally reopening and groups of young people are able to come together and connect with each other through their love of travel.

“I think people have been feeling a little bit gypped that 2020 took that away from us, that big overseas holiday or that gap year, and we know the younger generation has been more open to travelling as soon as they can.”

Research by Contiki into the travel attitudes of 18 to 35-year-olds found not only were they raring to get out and see the world, they missed opportunities to meet strangers and make friends overseas.

“There had been a bit of a trend towards younger people being a bit too cool to go on a group trip, but they’re telling us that now, they’re really missing connecting with other people,” Ms Barry said.

“Contiki is flavour of the month now. They’re realising they can go overseas and meet people from all over the world and a company is going to make sure the experience is fun but safe for them.”

The Kawarau Bridge bungee jump in Queenstown. Picture: Contiki

It had been a long year for the travel industry, and tour operators in particular, since international borders slammed shut in March last year. Contiki’s entire global network of hundreds of tours across six continents was brought to a standstill.

“No one knew how long it would go on,” Ms Barry said. “But we thought, never waste a crisis. What can we do that will make us smarter and better? What are the projects we’ve been wanted to do for ages but never have time to do?”

As the long months ticked by, Contiki kept busy with its sustainability strategy – it recently announced it will be an entirely carbon neutral company by 2022 – and went about vetting each of the companies it worked with on tours, from hotels and restaurants to transport operators to ensure they’d be up to top-notch standard when travel returned.

Hobbiton is always a highlight in New Zealand.

Australian trips resumed late last year, including an island-hopping tour of North Queensland, and then it was a matter of waiting for that bubble with our neighbours across the ditch.

With New Zealand tours about to get under way, Ms Barry said Contiki was already looking ahead to Singapore, which is likely to be the next destination to open a travel bubble with Australia.

“We’re thinking Japan after the Olympics as well,” she said.

As the world continues to reopen in travel bubbles, young tourists are likely to lead the charge, armed with savings and built-up annual leave, and perhaps more adventurous and flexible than older generations.

While Contiki’s best selling European tours have generally been around 14 days long, the current top selling tour is a mammoth 45-day odyssey across Europe in 2022.

“I think there’s a sense among young people of, ‘I didn’t appreciate travelling as much when it was too easy and it was constantly there for me’,” Ms Barry said.

“Now they don’t want to take it for granted and want to see and do as much as they can. They’re thinking, ‘I want a long trip, a big trip, because I don’t know when I might be able to do that again’.”

Turns out there is an ultimate family holiday – a ship where you can skydive, rock climb and ride bumper cars while you travel to idyllic islands.

There’s a hidden beach in New Zealand with a secret tunnel that has got this Hollywood star obsessed.

Fresh details have emerged about the incredible rescue mission that saved three sailors from a night-time shark attack.

Highlights of our Australia trips

Chicken parma.

Chicken parmigiana - chicken schnitzel with tomato sauce, mozzarella and parmesan - is Australia’s national dish and you’ll see it on any Australian pub menu. Goes great with an Aussie shiraz!

Unsurprisingly, kangaroo meat is big in Aus. The lean protein can be enjoyed as a stacked burger or juicy steak and is a must-try for hungry carnivores.

The Aussies’ take on fish and chips typically features grilled or deep-fried Barramundi. A delicate, crispy-skinned fish that’s great for lunch or dinner.

Sweet-toothed travelers should 100% try Australia’s ‘fave chocolate biscuit’ (biscuit = cookie). A great pick-me-up snack for those more active days.

The nation’s national dessert (as long as you don’t ask the kiwis), Pavlova is a dreamy mountain of meringue, whipped cream and fresh fruit. Yum.

Top food in Australia

Australian museum, sydney.

Founded in 1827, this is the oldest museum in Aus. Packed with preserved wildlife and fossils, aboriginal archaeology and tons of stuff on coral reefs, you can easily lose yourself here for a whole day.

Melbourne Museum

The biggest museum in the Southern Hemisphere boasts 600 million years of natural history. A complete whale skeleton and movie screenings in IMAX make for a fun way to get a bit of culture in your downtime.

South Australian Museum

Adelaide’s impressive 5-storey museum is home to the world’s biggest collection of Aboriginal artefacts, with over 4 million objects on display. A real treat for history fans on our Australia tours.

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

Located on Larrakia Land in Darwin, this place is the ultimate guide to all that unique flora and fauna of Central Australia. There’s indigenous culture in abundance and over 30,000 cultural artefacts, plus free entry.

National Sports Museum

Not your usual museum, you’ll find it at Melbourne Cricket Ground (known as the ‘G’). Celebrates the many sporting achievements of Aus, plus there’s a cool cricket hall of fame.

Top museums in Australia

Sydney new year’s eve.

Iconic all-day celebration culminating in not one but TWO firework displays - one at 9pm and one to ring in the new year. (Top tip: watch for free on Observatory Hill at Millers Point).

Sydney Mardi Gras

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival runs from Feb - March every year. Expect pool parties, musicals, all-nighters and *lots* of glitter…

Adelaide Fringe

Easily one of the best festivals in Australia. Enjoy four weeks of live music, comedy, dance, theatre, food stalls, late night parties and more...

Byron Bay Bluesfest

For five days Byron Bay plays host to the most exciting artists in contemporary pop, rock, hip-hop and R&B. If you’re there in April, don’t miss it.

Nestled in a remote town deep in the outback, Parrttjima celebrates all things Aboriginal. Expect epic light shows, music and workshops in the heart of the Aussie desert.

Frequently asked questions about australia.

Your search for ""

What is the currency used in Australia?

The official currency of Australia is the Australian Dollar (A$). It’s a good idea to check the exchange rate before you travel. Major credit and debit cards like VISA, Mastercard and American Express are accepted - just keep in mind those pesky fees!

Do I need a visa to travel to Australia?

Yep, you’ll need a visa to enter Australia. You might need an eVisitor or an ETA, depending on where you’re traveling from. Check out our easy visas guide for all the details.

When is the best time to visit Australia?

This will depend on why you’re visiting Australia and what you plan to do while you’re there. Summer (Dec-Feb) won’t be the best time to visit Australia if you’re planning an active trip. Your beach walks and national park trips will be much less sweaty during spring or autumn.

Summer can be humid and stormy, but it’s the ideal time if you’re there for the wildlife, the NYE celebrations or the cricket.

Autumn (Mar-May) and Spring (Sept-Nov) are the most popular months—so you’ll meet plenty of fellow downunderers as you hit up the food fests and the grand prix.

Travelling on a budget and willing to sacrifice gleaming sun for some peace and quiet? The Australian Winter (June-Aug) is still warm enough to surf and explore coral reefs

What should I pack for a trip to Australia?

Apart from your passport (duh!) we’d recommend you bring:

• Lightweight, breathable clothes: it can get pretty hot • Sunglasses: those Aussie rays are gonna be bright • Comfortable shoes: expect a fair amount of walking • Crossbody bag: keep your stuff safe and your hands free

What is ATM access like in Australia?

There’s great ATM access throughout Australia, but it’s still a good idea to carry a bit of cash to avoid fees - and pay for stuff when you’re off the beaten track.

How many days should I spend in Australia?

Most people will spend 1-2 weeks in Australia, and it’s generally accepted that this is a good amount of time to experience many of the main attractions. But really, it’s totally up to you and will depend on how much you want to see and do – not to mention how much free time you have! We offer trips of anything from a few days to nearly a month - check out our Australia trips for the full lowdown.

Is it customary to tip in Australia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, and service charge won’t always be added to the bill. If you want to tip though, we’re sure it’ll be appreciated!

Is tap water safe to drink in Australia?

In general yes, especially in towns and cities. More rural spots may use rainwater, in which case you’ll see a sign saying not to drink it, and there’s always bottled water available.

IS SOMETHING HOLDING YOU BACK from your Dream Holiday?

The idea of (now) travelling alone isn’t your idea of a fun holiday, and you’re left wondering about the options for solo travellers over 40.

Travelling solo in your twenties or thirtes, isn’t the same daunting prospect compared to being over forty – backpacking is the norm or there’s the option to join touring companies like Contiki or Top Deck. But Contiki and Top Deck have a cut off age, and you’re no longer in their sights. How easy is it in your twenties?  – no end of options for finding travel buddies and meet other solo travellers along the way. In your 20’s plenty of travellers are still single – there’s lots of other ‘twenty somethings’ doing the same.

DWINDLING OPTIONS?

Friends not up for the same travel plans you have in mind, or the same passion? Or your circle of single friends has shrunk and you’re wondering your options for travel without a travel buddy?

GETTING STARTED

Wherever you are at with your travel plans, you definitely made some inroads as you got this far and you found us – Wow, a travel company for solo travellers fo over 40 year olds , perhaps is what you’re thinking.

We’ll, you’re right – you fit right in! Because, we only look after solo travellers.

Nice change to the other mainstream packages out there – ads loaded with images of the perfect couple touring Europe, or soaking up romantic moments at a tropical resort, and so on and so on…. tragically failing to show single travellers in the picture.

Find Your Travel Style

Not all solo travellers are the same, and that’s why we’ve created 6 travel styles to pick from

  • 'Discovery' – leisure touring
  • 'On The Go' - walking and adventure tours
  • 'Marine' – ocean and river cruising
  • 'Combo' - mixing it up with tour & cruise combination packages
  • 'Relax' - chill out resort package
  • 'Essentials' - mindful on the budget, without scrimping on value for money

Age Matched Groups

Most of our tours are created for single-solo travellers 40 years and over , with a mix of age groups offered;  40 years & over, 45 years & over, 50 years & over , 40 to 59 years, and there’s others.   And our Cruise Circle for Solos  cruise groups are best suited to cruise fans 40 years and over. Our age-matched groups have a proven track record, and you can read the countless testimonials from your fellow solo traveller.
