Country star Carrie Underwood announces tour stop at Glendale’s Gila River Arena

PHOENIX — Country star Carrie Underwood announced Monday she will be performing in Glendale next year as part of her upcoming tour.

The eight-time Grammy Award winner will take the stage at Gila River Arena on March 11, one of 43 stops across the U.S. in The Denim & Rhinestones Tour.

Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.

The tour, which begins this fall, follows the release of her album of the same name on June 10.

“I’m thrilled to be hitting the road again with The Denim & Rhinestones Tour,” Underwood said in a press release.

“I’m having such an amazing time with my Las Vegas residency and look forward to continuing that next year after the tour. I’m excited to bring the new music of Denim & Rhinestones to life on tour, as well as put new spins on familiar favorites. We’ve been working hard already preparing an amazing show, and I can’t wait to see everyone on the road!”

Underwood’s special guest for the tour will be Jimmie Allen, who recently received his first Grammy nomination for best new artist.

Underwood last performed in the Valley at Talking Stick Resort Arena, now Footprint Center, in 2019 as part of The Cry Pretty Tour 360.

The concert at Gila River Arena marks Underwood’s sixth stop in metro Phoenix and fourth at the Glendale venue.

Phoenix concerts you don't want to miss this weekend, including an iconic country hitmaker

The American Idol most likely to headline an arena (with apologies to Kelly Clarkson) returns to Glendale on Saturday in continued support of her ninth album, "Denim & Rhinestones." It's the weekend's biggest show by far, but not the only game in town.

Each week, we shine a spotlight on three concerts we believe to be the best use of your entertainment dollar if you plan on spending it in metro Phoenix, allowing for the fact that we all look for different things in music and reserving one spot for a local act.

It's doubtful anyone among us would be equally excited about Carrie Underwood, the Chicano rock legends who crashed the mainstream with a Ritchie Valens cover and a local punk band reuniting just to say goodbye. But you know what you're into, so filter these recommendations accordingly.

Here are three concerts you should know about in metro Phoenix this weekend.

Carrie Underwood at Desert Diamond Arena

The small-town charm that undoubtedly helped Carrie Underwood take home the gold on "American Idol" was still very much in evidence at Talking Stick Resort Arena in 2019 during her last Valley appearance, as was the lasting connection that led those fans to vote for her each week.

But in the end, what ultimately sealed the deal for Underwood in 2005 was the strength of her vocals. And there were plenty of powerful reminders in her hit-filled set that she's the kind of vocalist whose more impressive shows of force can cause an audience to cheer mid-song.

She could've won "Idol" all over again on the strength of her performance on her last tour. This one should be no different.

Los Lobos at Chandler Center for the Arts

Los Lobos may be best remembered in the mainstream as the guys who took a Ritchie Valens cover to the top of the Billboard's Hot 100 nearly 30 years after the Mexican folk song was transformed into an instant classic by the young Chicano rocker.

And that was just one of eight amazing contributions by Los Lobos to the soundtrack to "La Bamba."

But those Ritchie Valens covers barely scratch the surface of their artistry as they grew into one of America's most ambitious rock band, from the traditional Mexican folk of their debut through the gritty roots-revival moves of 1984's "How Will the Wolf Survive?" to the richly textured majesty of "Kiko."

They're still great at doing other people's music justice, though, as their latest album, "Native Sons," reminds us.

Local legends Doll Skin at Rebel Lounge

These local punks earned a four-page spread in Alternative Press in 2019 as they toured the States in support of "Love is Dead and We Killed Her," an album that welcomed listeners to their strongest effort yet with Sydney Dolezal soulfully sighing, "This is a song for everyone I hate."

As fate would have it, "Love is Dead" was destined to become their final album.

Guitarist Alex Snowden and bassist Nicole Rich left the fold in late 2020. Drummer Meghan Herring followed last July. In January, a Doll Skin Farewell show featuring all four original members was announced on social media in a post that read "Through a culmination of events, Syd has decided to lay DS to rest after almost 10 years."

It's a bittersweet occasion but it promises to be a good time, judging from the fun they're having with it in subsequent posts, encouraging fans to wear black to their "funeral show."

Axl Rose Superfan Carrie Underwood Will Open for Guns N’ Roses

After miraculously enticing Axl Rose to join her onstage at Stagecoach 2022 and, yet again , at her L.A. headlining concert earlier this year, Carrie Underwood will return the favor and open for Guns N’ Roses when the band plays Nashville on its summer 2023 tour . Underwood joined the entirety of GNR onstage in London last summer, and it’s a fair bet fans will see her again between Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan in Music City.

In addition to the Nashville appearance at Geodis Park, Underwood will open two Guns N’ Roses shows in Canada. The band, who mostly reunited in 2016, also announced the rest of the openers for their upcoming tour : Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders will support on a string of dates, including a newly announced show at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, while Los Angeles rockers Dirty Honey , grunge icons Alice in Chains, and Mexican sibling trio the Warning each play select shows.

Rose last sang with Underwood onstage in Los Angeles in March on a duet of GNR’s “Welcome to the Jungle.” Along with their summer headlining tour, Guns N’ Roses will join AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Metallica at the Power Trip Festival in Indio, California, in October.

The country music superstar stepped out for a rare night out in Las Vegas.

The "Before He Cheats" singer recently hit the town for a rare evening out after one of her shows, and she shared photos from the event on her Instagram feed. Carrie headed to Zouk Nightclub (also at Resorts World) to take in a Ludacris concert. Fans will remember that Carrie and Ludacris teamed up in 2018 for the certified platinum song, "The Champion."

Carrie shared a selfie with Ludacris and wrote, "Pretty sure @ludacris is the only person who could get me out to the club after my show @resortsworldlv . @zoukgrouplv was so much fun and we even got a fun surprise watching @tpain ! Thanks for a fun night out! #LasVegas #zouk."

Carrie dressed down for the night and ditched her typical "denim and rhinestones" for black leggings, a black Guns 'n' Roses T-shirt , and a yellow "Welcome to the Jungle" trucker hat (another nod to Guns 'n' Roses). She paired the look with slouchy leather boots.

Fans rushed to the comments section to say, "Is that really Carrie Underwood?" and "I didn’t even recognize her!"

Others remarked, "ultimate life goal is so go to the club with carrie 😂👏🏼" "Y’all should have got on stage and sang THE CHAMPION! Would have been epic!" and "YOU DO YOU CARRIE! What an experience I can ONLY imagine!!"

On the heels of her triumphant headlining return to the iconic Stagecoach Festival, Carrie Underwood, announces her new arena tour,  THE DENIM & RHINESTONES TOUR , with dates in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023.  The new tour, promoted by AEG Presents, will kick off on October 15 in Greenville, SC, making stops in 43 U.S. cities including New York’s Madison Square Garden, Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, and L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena before concluding in Seattle, WA on March 17.  Carrie will be joined on  THE DENIM & RHINESTONES TOUR  by special guest Jimmie Allen on all dates.  After teasing fans about the impending announcement on social media and on last night’s episode of  American Idol , Carrie made the official reveal this morning.

Allen will join Carrie’s  THE DENIM & RHINESTONES TOUR  as his star continues to rise, following his first GRAMMY Award nomination for Best New Artist in 2022 and CMA and ACM Award wins for New Artist of the Year & New Male Artist of the Year, respectively, in 2021. His third album  Tulip Drive  will be released June 24.

“I’m thrilled to be hitting the road again with  THE DENIM & RHINESTONES TOUR ,” says Carrie.  “I’m having such an amazing time with my Las Vegas residency and look forward to continuing that next year after the tour. I’m excited to bring the new music of  Denim & Rhinestones  to life on tour, as well as put new spins on familiar favorites.  We’ve been working hard already preparing an amazing show, and I can’t wait to see everyone on the road!”

The all-new production will be directed by Barry Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson), and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is Production Designer.

Since early in her career, Carrie has designated a portion of ticket sales from her tours to support worthwhile charities and organizations. She continues that tradition by arranging for a donation of $1 from each ticket sold for  THE DENIM & RHINESTONES TOUR  to be contributed to the  Tunnel to Towers Foundation  ( t2t.org ), which has been helping America’s heroes since 9/11 by providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building custom-designed smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. The Foundation is also committed to eradicating veteran homelessness and aiding the victims of major U.S. disasters.

Carrie will release her highly-anticipated album,  Denim & Rhinestones , on June 10.  The album is her latest collaboration with David Garcia, with Garcia and Carrie having co-produced her critically-acclaimed 2018 release,  Cry Pretty , which marked the first time Carrie produced her own album.  Garcia and Carrie also co-produced Carrie’s 2021 GRAMMY® Award-winning album of gospel hymns,  My Savior .  The lead single from the new upcoming album,  “Ghost Story,”  is currently climbing the charts and has garnered over 30M global streams.  The song’s cinematic music video, directed by acclaimed director and photographer Randee St. Nicholas, is available now ( Watch Here ).

The  Denim & Rhinestones  Signed CD Box Set and Vinyl Box Sets are available for preorder now, which include an exclusive t-shirt, rhinestone pack, denim tote bag, and album slip mat in limited quantities  here . 2022 dates for Carrie’s ongoing  REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency  at the Resorts World Theatre continue through May 21.  The first artist to grace the largest and tallest stage in Las Vegas, Carrie opened the new 5,000-capacity, world-class theatre with a sold-out engagement in December 2021, followed by sold-out runs in March and April 2022.  2023 dates for  REFLECTION  will be announced at a later date.

Carrie’s most recent arena tour,  THE   CRY PRETTY TOUR 360,  ran in 2019, closing out in the #1 spot on Pollstar’s LIVE75 chart (11/04/19), which ranks worldwide active tours by average tickets sold.  Also in 2019, Carrie performed her UK arena tour,  THE CRY PRETTY TOUR UK , which brought her dynamic production and signature vocal prowess to thousands of fans throughout England, Wales and Scotland with five arena shows.

Since her monumental American Idol win in 2005, Carrie Underwood has been unstoppable. The country singer, who hails from Muskogee, Oklahoma, is considered one of the top country singers in the world. Not only has she come out with several successful studio albums, but she’s also toured all over the world, guest starred on popular shows (like How I Met Your Mother and Blue Bloods ), and has even shared the stage with fellow music greats like Céline Dion, Reba McEntire , and Dolly Parton . In honor of this country powerhouse, we rounded up some of her most amazing snaps taken during her performances throughout the years.

1) 2005 Country Music Awards Music Festival

Here, Carrie Underwood is pictured taking the stage at the 2005 CMA Music Festival in Nashville. The singer had recently won American Idol a couple of months earlier. As part of her prize, she was given a blue Ford Mustang convertible , which, she shared in a recent interview, she still drives around today.

2) “Broadway Meets Country” Benefit

Later that year, Underwood joined actor Patrick Wilson to perform during the Broadway Meets Country Benefit in New York City. The two did their own rendition of “Suddenly Seymour” from the Broadway hit musical, Little Shop of Horrors .

3) 2006 Academy Of Country Music New Artists' Show

In 2006, the Oklahoma native sang at the Academy of Country Music’s New Artists’ showcase, which was held at the MGM Grand Ballroom in Las Vegas.

4) 49th Annual Grammy Awards

For the 49th Annual Grammy Awards, Underwood dueted with Gary LeVox, the lead singer of the Rascal Flatts.

5) 2008 Country Music Awards Music Festival

The songstress performed yet again at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville. Dressed in a bright orange ruffled top and khaki shorts, the star sang some of her popular hits in front of an excited crowd. Other names on the lineup that weekend included Taylor Swift, Sugarland, Kellie Pickle, and Faith Hill.

6) 2009 Good Morning America Performance

In 2009, Underwood flew out to New York City’s Lincoln Center to appear on the popular morning talk show Good Morning America . Outfitted in leather gloves and a black coat, she was there to promote her then-upcoming album, Play On .

7) 52nd Annual Grammy Awards

The singer was invited back to perform at the Grammy Awards in 2010. This time she took the stage with other big names, including Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, and Usher. The group performed a Michael Jackson tribute by singing his 1995 song, "Earth Song."

8) Academy of Country Music Presents Girls' Night Out: Superstar Women of Country

Not too long after, Underwood joined forces with other country stars, including Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire, Naomi Judd, Wynona Judd, and Jennifer Nettles, to perform at the Girls Night Out: Superstar Women of Country concert . The group sang "Coal Miner’s Daughter" by country icon Loretta Lynn.

9) London Showcase

In 2012, a 29-year-old Underwood crossed the pond to London to perform at The Arts Club in the city’s Mayfair neighborhood.

10) Blown Away Tour

Underwood put on a dazzling show dressed in an eye-catching high-low dress at the Stockton Arena in 2013.

11) 55th Annual Grammy Awards

The famous country singer performed at the Grammys in 2013 dressed in an iconic light-up dress that was designed by Irish fashion designer Don O’Neill.

12) World Aids Day (RED) Concert

Underwood was part of the star-studded World AIDS Day (RED) Concert in Times Square. Other performers that night included Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West, and Chris Martin of Coldplay.

13) Faster Horses Festival

In the summer of 2015, the country crooner belted out some of her most popular songs at the Faster Horses Festival in Brooklyn, Michigan. The annual country music fest showcases the best of the best in country music. This year’s lineup includes the likes of Shania Twain, Luke Bryan, Zac Brown Band, and Dwight Yoakam.

14) Country 2 Country Festival

She also performed at London’s Country 2 Country Festival at the O2 Arena. The music fest, which started a decade ago, has had many famous country singers participate through the years, including Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, and Luke Combs.

15) Live in Los Angeles

Underwood wore a gorgeous purple and pink chiffon dress to perform in Los Angeles during her Storyteller tour. Her opening acts included Little Big Town, Sam Hunt, Lauren Alaina, and Maddie & Tae.

16) At the Drive-In

Underwood joined fellow country performer Brad Paisley, virtually during the pandemic, for Live Nation’s drive-in concert series, Live From The Drive-In. The two sang their hit song "Remind Me."

17) Country Music Awards Summer Jam

She also dueted with Dwight Yoakam at the Nashville Country Music Awards Summer Jam concert a year later.

18) Stagecoach Festival

We can’t get over Underwood’s fringed jean jacket she wore for the 2022 Stagecoach Festival. This outdoor music festival, held each spring, started in 2007 and has had countless iconic country singers perform over the past decade and a half, including Blake Shelton, Shania Twain, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Eagles, Taylor Swift, and Tim McGraw.

Took a quick trip this weekend. I'm not a very entertaining or humourous writer, but I've enjoyed all your TRs. Maybe something in mine will help someone's future trip.

Landed a few minutes late but otherwise good flight .

Taxi line had about 100 people but line moved fast. $26 to Bellagio ; I tipped $6.

I had checked in using the app but was planning to wait in line if room was on a low floor. We got the 24th floor (didn't know Stay Well rooms are 23rd and 24th floors) so I headed to the ONE kiosk they had. A couple was trying to print their room key with no success. A Bellagio staff person came over and assisted with getting our keys which was nice since check in line was 25 people deep.

Room was nice, king bed with room for table, chair and sofa.

We were hungry so went to lobby. Stopped at Gelato place, line was about 10 people. Not super efficient but wait staff was nice. Husband got egg white frittata which he said was good, I got some gelato.

Took Uber to Mirage . We had dinner reservation at Osteria Costa then tickets to Love.

The chicken marsala was good but wow, the lasagna was amazing. Tender pasta, delicious sauce (sometimes too acidic for me), not too cheesy. Just the right balance of everything, and we got a meatball on the side because the server recommended. Meatball was soft and very flavorful.

Went to Love. Have never been, and I wouldn't say it's my favorite Cirque du Soleil show, but I thought it was good and I'm not a Beatles fan. My husband IS a fan, and he thought it was great. We sat in section 209.

Returned to Bellagio. I had made reservations at Noodles which was good since they were turning people away. Got the congee, BBQ pork buns and a few other things. Food was good although (as expected) it was 2-4 times what it would cost me in Chinatown at home.

Went back to room and watched some fountain shows.

Next morning, we went down to the pool. Had a cabana rented at the Cypress pool. Cabana was nice, although it initially took some time before our cabana server appeared. We ordered breakfast, hopped in the pool a few times, then left when it just got too hot. There is a ceiling fan in the cabana, and misters outside, but they really need some additional cooling to make it a more pleasant respite from the heat.

Took a nap. I love naps!

Ubered over to Resorts World. Had dinner at Carversteak which was overall pretty nice. Got the strip loin steak with spinach and pureed potatoes. Very nice.

Got to Theatre for Carrie Underwood concert. The nice thing about going to a concert for someone in residency is that you have time to review and pick your seats (vs. that madness known as Taylor Swift). We were seated in section 501 in the first row so no one was directly in front. She put on a great concert, lots of props and special effects. Very fun. Tip - If you go left when you exit the theatre, you take a walk to the Lyft/Uber pickup area. It's not very populated so wouldn't recommend if you are solo female.

Flew back the next morning. Southwest flight mostly full but was on time.

Thx Cindy! Thing for me with Love was that the show I went to, there was no yellow submarine performance or song. They had a yellow submarine floating around the stage, and a yellow submarine drink, but no performance??? This was a disappointment. I know they have numerous hit songs, but this one seemed like a very obvious miss.
