Iceland Quotes about the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is a one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.  People come from all over the world to experience this breathtaking phenomenon.  Lights appear to be broadcast in to the sky in lovely hues of green and red.  This special occurrence is spectacular and is remembered by all who have the privilege of experiencing.

-“There is witnessing the Northern Lights, and then there is seeing the incredible aurora whilst upside down scaling a moonlit glacier!” -Becky Pemberton

-“You cannot rob me of free nature’s grace, you cannot shut the windows of the sky through which Aurora shows her brightening face.”-James Thomson

-“I try to show everybody Iceland all the time.  My people are like, “Don’t tell everybody the secret.  It’s so peaceful and beautiful here!”   It’s incredible; I go home and drive across country, and go to my mom’s place and it’s dark with the Northern Lights, and I like to sit in some hot springs.”-Anita Briem

‘Þetta Reddast’: Embracing Iceland’s Motto During Your Travels

iceland travel slogan

“Que será, será

Whatever will be, will be!”

I’ve always gravitated towards these song lyrics.

Choosing not to fight the things in life out of one’s control and making a conscious decision to always see the bright side and find the silver lining, no matter the circumstances?

Isn’t that just a lovely way to navigate this life?!

I sure think so!

And I definitely think it’s the mindset one should adopt while traveling Iceland!

Icelanders have another way of putting this kind of attitude to words, and it’s a phrase used often in their country:

Þetta Reddast !

Which loosely translates to, “It will all work out okay.”

And why is this particular phrase, so deeply imbedded in the lexicon of Icelanders and used with abundant frequency, considered the unofficial motto of Iceland itself?

Well, let’s consider for a moment!

Icelanders live in a stunning but highly remote and fairly challenging part of the world. They, as a people, have historically had to contend with uncertain and oftentimes unrelenting harsh weather. They have had to learn how to thrive as an isolated, small country in the middle of the North Atlantic and remain hopeful while in the throes of seemingly never-ending dark winters.

It’s only natural, then, that these conditions would lend itself to creating an irrefutable indomitable spirit that can be felt throughout the country! Is it truly any wonder that a people who know struggle firsthand would learn to seek the positive and choose to just go with the flow and find the (often dark!) humor in just about, well, everything ?!

Things, after all, just have a way of working out! Icelanders know this!

For the record, I love this Icelandic attitude! My impression of Icelanders is that they just seem unaffected and almost recklessly optimistic! Nothing can ruffle their feathers. They have an unflappable resolve and an admirable “come at me, bro!” level of confidence.

Just livin’ the good ‘Þetta Reddast’ life, they are!

So why should you adopt this ‘Þetta Reddast’ way of thinking? Read on for why embracing Iceland’s apropos motto will put your expectations in the right frame of mind during your travels there and allow you to enjoy your time in the Land of Fire and Ice to the absolute max!

Reason Numero Uno: The WEATHER

icelandic weather

Hailing from Minnesota, I know a thing or two about insane weather! After all, I come from the land of sticky, sweltering summers and bone-chilling polar vortex winters! We are hardy folk where I come from, and darn proud of it!

As such, I went to Iceland thinking, giiiiiirl, you can’t throw anything at me I haven’t already seen!

We experienced it all in Iceland, from a sudden hailstorm that abruptly interrupted an otherwise perfectly sunny day to a freak snowstorm in the middle of May! Wind gusts that nearly blew us straight back to America to pelting rains that came at us sideways.

Sideways , people!

Arnarstapi cliffs iceland

Yes, Iceland is the land of unpredictability, home to erupting volcanoes, rumbling earthquakes, shooting geysers, boiling geothermal pots, and more! How exciting , right?! You’ll be visiting a country that is host to a vast array of landscapes and weather patterns, and with that comes pure and unadulterated wildness .

So what does this mean for you, exactly?

Well, it might mean that it rains or snows during the entirety of your day hike, or even your whole trip ! Maybe not quite what you had in mind when you were dreaming of Iceland back home! But here it is, so now you must make do!

Or, it could mean that the winds are so unbelievably strong and hostile while you’re visiting that travel advisories are issued, meaning your booked tours or even your own driving plans must be reconsidered or rescheduled.

The possibilities in Iceland weather-wise are simply endless . After all, Icelanders like to say that if you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes! That’s a whole lot of opportunities for crazy to step up and take over, which it likely will at some point!

This is Iceland we’re talking about, after all!

But if you pack the right gear and take Iceland’s weather in stride, you will be prepared no matter what Mother Nature throws at you, thus setting yourself up to have the best time regardless .

After all, you can’t control the weather, but you can control your ‘tude.

Keep yours positive, and you’ll be golden! ’cause, you know, þetta reddast!

Driving in Iceland: The Possibility of Road Closures

driving in iceland

You might be thinking, road closures?! What do you mean , road closures?!

Deep breaths, friend! I understand that just reading that might have you in a bit of a panic. After all, you have been saving your hard-earned money and precious vacation time to make this trip to Iceland possible, and you don’t want to miss a thing once you are over there!

I get it! Of course, you don’t! You’ve got places to go and people to see!

But choosing Iceland as your travel destination means taking the bad with the good because, truth be told, you have chosen a pretty unpredictable place to go!

On our trip, there were several waterfalls and canyons in our self-drive itinerary that we were eagerly anticipating exploring, only to arrive at the road needed to take us to our point of interest and find it blocked off. In our case, excessive rain had made the roads dangerous and therefore temporarily closed:

‘Ófært!’, the signs read. Impassable .

Well… shoot .

Were we disappointed?

Was there anything we could do about it?

But was the silver lining that there were still oodles of other things to see and do?

This is Iceland , so you may already know the answer:

Obviously !

So, when fine tuning that itinerary of yours, remember that you may not be able to follow it to an exact tee. Know that certain roads and parts of Iceland (such as Landmannalaugar) are simply inaccessible in winter and cannot be traversed. Know that a 4×4 vehicle is a must if you want to tackle ‘F-roads’. And expect that you may come across a road unexpectedly blocked off. It happens, as it did for us!

But fret not! You already have the “backbone” of your trip planned. Stay flexible and openminded! You can always make adjustments to your itinerary where needed should you encounter this. You may even be able to park and hike, rather than drive, your way to your point of interest if you have the time and flexibility to do so.

Just remember: Iceland knows what she’s doing! She’s got you!

Iceland, take the wheel!

You may be wondering:

F-roads are Fjallið (mountain) roads in Iceland that lead to some of the most incredible spots in the Highlands. They are also the most challenging to navigate. Proceed with an appropriate vehicle and use extreme caution.

Happy Trails? Here’s Hoping!

road signs in iceland

This is another potentially aggravating hiccup you could encounter, so it’s best to prepare yourself ahead of time that this is just how things go in Iceland!

It’s nothing personal, I promise!

But yes, that gorgeous hike you’ve spent months dreaming about may, in fact, be closed to foot traffic during your visit.

It almost happened to us!

The hot river hike in Reykadular Valley had come highly recommended and in my research it looked, in a word, divine . Suffice it to say that I was eagerly anticipating this particular day of our itinerary!

And then, just weeks before our arrival, the trail was closed! Indefinitely! Excessive rain and too many people walking off the provided path had created messy conditions and the trail needed ample time to dry up and heal.

I was in a panic ! I emailed my Icelandic travel agent straight away who confirmed the trail was indeed closed but who also didn’t seem nearly as worked up about this potential travesty as I was.

(That whole Þetta Reddast outlook coming through, loud and clear!)

By some pure miracle (i.e. luck), the trail opened up again on the very day it was in our itinerary, and we were able to hike the trail we had so been looking forward to experiencing:

þetta reddast, hike to Reykjadalur valley

Still, it could have just as easily remained closed and we would have missed it altogether, which is why preparing oneself for this possibility will go a long way in tempering disappointment.

Now, will the trail-closing decision-makers drunk on their vacation-ruining power close hiking trails willy-nilly just to spite you?

I kid! Of course not!

But in Iceland they take environmentalism and protecting the precious beauty of their country and her landscapes very seriously, and as such, they will do what they need to do, when they need to do it.

And sometimes, that will mean your plans are no dice, amigo!

No worries! This is why we love Iceland! We love her pristine beauty and that the people there care for it so. Right?! This is a good thing! Full stop!

As such, respect such decisions if they have been made, and seek out an alternative.

You’re lucky, after all.

Alternatives are all OVER the place in Iceland!

You’ve never had so many fantastic Plan B options!

The Northern Lights: Will They (Or Won’t They) Appear?

þetta reddast

I am afraid I am the bearer of some bad news.

Try as you may, you cannot summon the Northern Lights to appear in the night sky during your Iceland trip, no matter the amount of sheer will and impassioned pleading you are able to muster!

I know, I know…life can be so harsh, am I right?!

I understand, however, that seeing the Northern Lights might be the impetus for your entire trip to Iceland! It might be the whole reason you are going in the first place, by golly!

And to be clear, there is nothing inherently wrong with planning a trip around such a desire, and deciding to go during a time of year that your research has shown will give you the best odds of seeing the Northern Lights with your very own two eyes .

But please, know this: they are only odds .

While the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights usually begins to increase sometime in the month of August, you need three things to happen simultaneously in order to have a shot at glimpsing them:

Dark nights, clear skies, and minimal light pollution.

Whether or not Iceland will serve that up for you on a silver platter during your visit remains to be, well, seen !

I recommend that you proceed in good faith with your Northern Lights hunt but do so with an optimistic yet realistic outlook! The natural world is a wonder to behold but it does not answer to our beck and call!

And what’s the worst thing that happens if you don’t see the Northern Lights?

I mean, truly ?

If the Northern Lights happen to go into hiding during your visit, here is what you will do:

You will go have a blast in Iceland regardless , because you are in Iceland , for crying out loud, and then? You’ll make plans to return again and give those Northern Lights another opportunity to show up and dance for you!

After all, you can never return to Iceland too many times!

That , my friends, is an indisputable and certifiable fact !

Elusive Icelandic Wildlife: Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are!

whale watching in iceland, þetta reddast

Many people come to Iceland for its wildlife. They are downright determined to see whales, for example, or snap some great pics of puffins in person.

This is an understandable desire! I mean, have you seen puffins?! They are irresistibly adorable !

But, just as with the Northern Lights, any sightings will be based on your odds given the time of year, and of course sheer (and perhaps dumb?) luck!

When we took our whale watching venture with Elding out of Reykjavík harbor, we were given a kind but honest forewarning:

Yes, you are on a whale watching tour. Yes, we will do our very best to find whales. But there’s a chance we might not find any whales. And that’s just the way it goes. The end.

(Or something like that!)

My understanding if that if you go on such a sightseeing tour and do not have any success, most tour companies will offer you a complimentary voucher to go on the same tour a different day. Of course, depending on how strict of a schedule you are on, this may be of little consolation to you.

We were fortunate! We saw a ton of whales. Even our guide couldn’t contain her excitement!

It was whale mania !

But if you find yourself on the opposite end of the spectrum, in search of Icelandic wildlife but coming up empty, the Þetta Reddast attitude will serve you well! Take that whale or puffin tour with high hopes but tempered expectations, and if you disembark not having seen a single one?

You still had a lovely cruise on the North Atlantic sea and got to see beautiful Iceland by water, right?!

Better luck next time!

(And trust me. Iceland is awesome. There will be a next time!)

FYI: The best time to see whales in Iceland is from April-October with peak in June, July, and August. Looking for puffins? They arrive in late April and can usually be seen through early September.

You Too Can Summon your Þetta Reddast Chill!

Glacier lagoon in iceland

Realizing after reading this post that you may need to take a hearty dose of chill-the-eff-out pills before you head to Iceland?

No worries! Knowledge is power and it’s good to get into the right frame of mind starting now !

But how to do that?

Well, it sounds almost too easy, but here it is:

If you’ve arrived in Iceland, the hard part of researching, planning, and saving your pennies is over, and the best part is about to begin! It’s smooth sailing from here on out!

Okay, okay… it should be mostly smooth sailing!

But part of choosing Iceland is choosing her with all her quirks and crazy and loving her no matter her unpredictable and wild ways!

If you go in with an open mind, a flexible attitude, and a positive spirit, I know that Iceland won’t be able to throw anything at you that you can’t overcome and, in fact, enjoy !

Not only that, but I encourage you to let a little spontaneity trip up your best laid plans!

I promise that Iceland will deliver, so there’s only one thing for you to do:

And let her.

70. ‘With the Aurora Borealis flaming coldly overhead, or the stars leaping in the frost dance, and the land numb and frozen under its pall of snow, this song of the huskies might have been. The excitement of life, only it was pitched in a minor key, with long-drawn wailing and half-sobs, and was more the pleading of life, the articulate travail of existence. It was an old song, old as the breed itself—one of the first songs of the younger world in a day when songs were sad.’ – Jack London

The capital of Iceland is Reykjavik. If you only have a short time to explore the city, be sure to check out our one day in Reykjavik itinerary . Best quotes about Iceland

“I was so fortunate; in the years that I was in ‘Thrones,’ we were able to shoot in Iceland. I think some of my favourite memories would have to be isolated out there, surrounded by nothing but snow and ice.”  – Rose Leslie

“When I’m in a place like Iceland, I allow myself to take a little more time to divert off into other paths creatively for a while and see what comes to me” – Damien Rice.

“The problem with driving around Iceland is that you’re basically confronted by a new soul-enriching, breath-taking, life-affirming natural sight every five goddam minutes. It’s totally exhausting.”  –Stephen Markley

“After filming the first season of ‘Poldark,’ I went with the cast on a trip to Iceland. We started off in Reykjavik and then went into the mountains and swam in naturally heated pools.”  – Eleanor Tomlinson

“I do like to write, but I also like to get and out and play. I am losing track of all the Cooper versions that I do. I have one for Iceland, different one over here.”  –Michael Bruce

“I still don’t know why, exactly, but I do think people can have a spiritual connection to landscape, and I certainly did in Iceland.”  – Hannah Kent

“I have a deep and ongoing love of Iceland, particular the landscape, and when writing ‘Burial Rites,’ I was constantly trying to see whether I could distil its extraordinary and ineffable qualities into a kind of poetry.”  – Hannah Kent

“When I was a little kid growing up in Iceland, I always dreamed about creating something that could have an impact on the whole world, and even as a young boy I was passionate about fitness and sports.”  – Magnus Scheving

“When I prepare, I am not messing around. I find the right places, the right people, and the right environment. Iceland is one of those places.”  – Conor McGregor

“I’ve walked a lot in the mountains in Iceland. And as you come to a new valley, as you come to a new landscape, you have a certain view. If you stand still, the landscape doesn’t necessarily tell you how big it is. It doesn’t really tell you what you’re looking at. The moment you start to move the mountain starts to move.”  – Olafur Eliasson

“I’m still blown away by how desolate Iceland can be, how deserted it is. It’s very often like living on the moon.”  – Olafur Darri Olafsson

“I would like to go to Iceland to see the northern lights.”  – Art Malik

“If I wasn’t bound to Brooklyn, due to my own personal reasons like taking care of my mother and the fact that this is where the band is based, I would probably move to Iceland.”  – Peter Steele

“Maybe it’s just a personal thing, but I get so much grounding from Iceland because I know it’s always going to be there. I have a very happy, healthy relationship with the country, so it’s really easy to go everywhere because I always have Iceland to go back to.”  – Bjork

“In Reykjavik, Iceland, where I was born, you are in the middle of nature surrounded by mountains and ocean. But you are still in a capital in Europe. So I have never understood why I have to choose between nature or urban.”  – Bjork

“Having grown up in Iceland and Los Angeles, gone to school in Europe and America, and lived and worked in London and New York, my insatiable appetite for travel has informed many of my life decisions.”  – Aslaug Magnusdottir

“I feel like the people from Iceland have a different relationship with their country than other places. Most Icelandic people are really proud to be from there, and we don’t have embarrassments like World War II where we were cruel to other people.”  – Bjork

“I like to show everybody Iceland all the time. My people are like, “Don’t tell everybody the secret. It’s so peaceful and beautiful here!” It’s incredible, I go home and drive across the country, and go to my mom’s place and it’s dark with the Northern Lights and I like to sit in some hot springs.” – Anita Briem.

“I am drawn to cold, desolate places rather than Hawaii. I actually love Hawaii too, but I tend to go to Iceland or Norway or Northern Japan – northern places for whatever reason. Which aren’t necessarily the best places to tour.”  – Phil Elverum

“There’s a reason why Jules Verne chose the place where the glacier was, where we start to descend into the center of the earth. That area specifically has magical powers and people come to this place from all over the world. I actually think that’s true of all Iceland. I think it’s so special, apart from the water and air being so clean.”  – Anita Briem

“The winters are too long, and there’s only one airline, so it’s difficult to escape when you feel frustrated or claustrophobic. The audience for our films isn’t very large, so it’s difficult to support an industry. But, Iceland is beautiful. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else.”  – Baltasar Kormakur

“There’s this feeling of creativity in Iceland.”  – Hilary Hahn

“I am seldom restricted by anything because I don’t know how to restrict myself. It’s a blessing and a curse. I feel a lot of support from people in Iceland especially from people that are content with themselves and their life”. – Olaf Amalds

“Neither mine nor other people’s prospects seem particularly pleasing just at the moment, and I have fantasies of going to Iceland, never to return. As it is, tell myself not to remember the past, not to hope or fear for the future, and not to think in the present, a comprehensive program that will undoubtedly have very little success.” – Edward Gorey

“Iceland, I’m in love with that country, the people are incredible.” – Kit Harington

“Iceland, though it lies so far to the north that it is partly within the Arctic Circle, is like Norway, Scotland, and Ireland, affected by the Gulf Stream, so that considerable portions of it are quite habitable.” – Harry Johnston

Hannah Kent quote about Iceland mountains

8. In Iceland, you can see the contours of the mountains wherever you go, and the swell of the hills, and always beyond that the horizon. And there’s this strange thing: you’re never sort of hidden; you always feel exposed in that landscape. But it makes it very beautiful as well.

Hannah Kent

Icelandic quote

9. It’s a pity we don’t whistle at one another, like birds. Words are misleading. I am always trying to forget words. That is why I contemplate the lilies of the field, but in particular the glacier. If one looks at the glacier for long enough, words cease to have any meaning on God’s earth.

Halldór Laxness

I have fantasies of going to Iceland, never to return. Edward Gorey Iceland quote

12. The republic they fashioned was a fine mix of parity and ruthlessness. On the one hand, it was the site of the world’s first democratic parliament, the Althing, established in 930; on the other, those first democrats used to salt the heads of their enemies and carry them around to show off to each other.

Lawrence Millman

13. When I’m in a place like Iceland, I allow myself to take a little more time to divert off onto other paths creatively for a while and see what comes to me.

Damien Rice

14. I still don’t know why, exactly, but I do think people can have a spiritual connection to landscape, and I certainly did in Iceland.

16. Because there are places our imaginations can never construct for us, and there are people who we will never meet but we could and we might. It reminds us that there is always reason to begin again.

17. The most amazing thing about Iceland is not the beautiful unspoiled wilderness or the majestic waterfalls. It is the fact the prime minister is listed in the phone book.

28. Thanks to the Jolabokaflod, books still matter in Iceland; they get read and talked about. Excitement fills the air. Every reading is crowded; every print run is sold.

Hallgrimur Helgason

29. Iceland is beautiful. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else.

30. You will reach your destination even though you travel slowly.

5 Things to Bring With You to Iceland

I have an entire  Iceland packing list  for those looking for  what to bring to Iceland , but here are the five items you absolutely can’t leave home without!

  • The   Lonely Planet Iceland   guidebook or the  Rick Steves Iceland   guidebook for your trip. It can be kind of a pain to find the major guidebooks once you land, or you’ll find them overpriced. I always like to pick mine up ahead of time.
  • Tech-friendly gloves like these  and  warm wool socks   to keep your fingers and toes toasty. Iceland gets cold!
  • A Camera  since Iceland is super photogenic. I used a mix of my  Nikon D810  and my   Samsung8  smartphone.
  • Sunscreen   since you’ll be outside a lot more than back home.
  • Travel  Insurance Policy  information, because things happen on the road. I pay for  World Nomads,  and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance if you’re going to be doing any hiking or outdoor activities in Iceland.

Finally, Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

While in Iceland, make sure you have a valid  Travel  Insurance Policy  because accidents happen on the road. I pay for  World Nomads,  and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance if you’ll be hanging out in cities where tourists can be the victims of pickpockets and in places where you’ll be doing a lot of outdoor activity.

I have been a paying customer of  World Nomads  for travel insurance for two years, and I happily recommend them.  If you get sick, injured, or have your stuff stolen, you’ll be happy to have the ability to pay for your medical bills or replace what’s stolen or broken.

Essential Icelandic Phrases You Should Learn

Enhance your travel experience by learning essential Icelandic phrases before you go. As the official language, Icelandic is unique among Germanic languages, closely tied to its Norse heritage.

While most Icelandic speakers are fluent in English, using local phrases shows respect and can often lead to more enriching interactions. This guide will introduce you to key Icelandic phrases and pronunciation tips, helping you navigate the language barrier and connect more deeply with Iceland's rich culture and history.

Let's dive into some basic Icelandic phrases to make your journey even more memorable!

The Origin of the Icelandic Language

The Icelandic language, belonging to the Germanic language family , shares its roots with Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. Remarkably, it has remained relatively unchanged since medieval times.

Under Danish rule until the 20th century, Icelandic preserved its identity and evolved independently of other Scandinavian languages. It makes it both a gateway to ancient literature and a notoriously tricky language for learners.

Pronunciation Guide: Common  Icelandic Words and Phrases

Pronunciation Guide: Common Icelandic Words and Phrases

Icelandic word can be challenging for English speakers. The Icelandic alphabet has 32 letters, some of which are not found in the English alphabet.

Key phrases in Icelandic hinge on understanding the unique sounds and stresses, often on the first syllable. The letter pronunciation differs significantly from the English alphabet, making pronunciation tips essential for travelers.

'Hello'

Immersing yourself in a new culture begins with mastering the art of greeting. A casual 'Hello' in Icelandic translates to 'Hæ' (pronounced Hay), a light and breezy syllable that fits the friendly Icelandic demeanor.

For a more formal setting, you'd say 'Góðan dag' (pronounced Go-than day), which means 'Good day'.

'Goodbye'

When it's time to part ways, you bid adieu by saying 'Bless'. While it's pronounced and spelled the same as the English word for a divine favor, in Icelandic, it's a common way to say 'Goodbye'.

'Yes'

Even expressing agreement or disagreement can be an adventure in the Land of Fire and Ice. When you want to say 'Yes' in Icelandic, you say 'Já' (pronounced Yow).

Interestingly, 'Já' sounds similar to 'yow', an English slang term used to express excitement or agreement.

‍ 'No'

On the other hand, to express 'No', you say 'Nei' (pronounced Nay), which rhymes with the English word 'day'. These primary responses are as essential as your travel map, guiding you through many situations, whether confirming a booking at a cozy guesthouse or answering a new friend's query.

'Please'

When it comes to politeness, the Icelandic language has its charm. Interestingly, Icelandic has no direct translation for the word 'Please'. Instead, politeness is often conveyed through the context of the conversation and the tone of voice.

However, if you want to request something politely, you can add 'gætið þú' (pronounced gay-tee-thu) before your request, which translates to 'Could you'.

‍ 'Thank You'

‍'Thank You'

For expressing gratitude, the phrase is 'Takk' (pronounced T-ah-k), which means 'Thank You'. The beautiful thing about this phrase is its simplicity and how genuinely it's usually received.

'You're Welcome'

To respond to thanks, you say 'Þú ert velkomin' (pronounced Thoo ert vel-koh-min), which means 'You're Welcome'. Using these phrases is a surefire way to leave a positive impression on the locals, reinforcing the friendly connection you've already established with your perfect greetings.

'Excuse Me'

Navigating crowded places or catching someone's attention gracefully requires the correct usage of 'Excuse Me'. In Icelandic, 'Excuse Me' translates to 'Afsakið' (pronounced Av-sa-keeth).

It's a handy phrase to have in your toolkit, especially in bustling Icelandic settings like the famous weekend Kolaportið Flea Market or when navigating through a crowd at one of the many music festivals.

‍ 'Do You Speak English?'

Even though many Icelanders are proficient in English, knowing how to ask this question in Icelandic can show respect for the local language and culture. The phrase is 'Talar þú ensku?' (pronounced Ta-lar thu en-sku), Which directly translates to 'Do you speak English?'.

'I Don't Understand'

Despite your best efforts to learn some Icelandic, there may be times when you need guidance in a conversation. Knowing how to say 'I don't understand' can be a lifesaver.

The phrase is 'Ég skil ekki' (pronounced Yeg skeel eh-kee). Expressing confusion honestly instead of pretending to understand is appreciated in Icelandic culture.

'Where Is…?'

'Where Is…?'

Iceland is an explorer's dream come true, with its majestic landscapes and natural wonders across the island. But to navigate this Nordic paradise effectively, knowing how to ask for directions in Icelandic can be incredibly handy.

'Where is...' translates to 'Hvar er...' (pronounced Kvar er). Whether you're looking for 'Hvar er hotelið mitt?' (Where is my hotel?) or 'Hvar er næsta veitingahús?' (Where is the nearest restaurant?), this phrase will help you navigate your way through the enchanting Icelandic terrains.

'Bathroom'

Let's talk practicality. No matter where you are, knowing how to ask for the restroom is a must.

In Icelandic, 'bathroom' or 'restroom' is 'klósett' (pronounced kloh-set). In a restaurant or café, you could say, 'Hvar er klósettið?' (Where is the bathroom?).

'Help!'

Iceland is an incredibly safe country. However, like any other destination, knowing the local word for 'Help!' is crucial in emergencies.

'Help' translates to 'Hjálp' (pronounced Hyowlp) in Icelandic. Although we hope you'll never need to use it, this phrase can be vital if you are in a predicament.

'Cheers!'

Partaking in the local toasting tradition is a fun way to immerse yourself in Icelandic culture. When raising a glass, Icelanders say 'Skál' (pronounced Sk-owl), which means 'Cheers'.

'Beautiful'

With its breathtaking landscapes and stunning natural phenomena, you'll find plenty of reasons to use the word 'Fagurt' (pronounced Fag-urt), which means 'Beautiful' in Icelandic. Whether you're admiring the surreal beauty of the Northern Lights, the stunning architecture of Hallgrimskirkja church, or the charisma of an Icelandic horse, expressing your awe in the local language will add another layer of depth to your appreciation.

After all, what's more beautiful than articulating your admiration in the same language that named and nurtured these wonders for centuries?

'How Much?'

Exploring Icelandic cuisine is an adventure in itself. Knowing how to ask 'How much?' or compliment the chef will enhance your dining experience. 'How much?' translates to 'Hvað kostar það?' (pronounced Kvath kostar thadh), an essential phrase for any shopping or dining situation.

‍ 'Delicious'

‍'Delicious'

After enjoying a delightful meal, compliment the chef by saying 'Þetta er ljúffengt' (pronounced Thetta er lyoo-fengt), which means 'This is delicious'. Trust us, your appreciation will not go unnoticed!

'Good Night'

As your day winds down, or you're parting ways with your new Icelandic friends, knowing how to say 'Good Night' and 'See You Later' in Icelandic will be the cherry on your linguistic journey. 'Good Night' translates to 'Góða nótt' (pronounced Go-tha nott), a phrase that carries the tranquility of the Icelandic nights within its syllables.

‍ 'See You Later'

To say 'See You Later', you'd say 'Sjáumst' (pronounced Shy-owmst), a more casual and friendly phrase that implies a hopeful expectation of meeting again. What better way to end your day or bid goodbye than with these heartwarming Icelandic phrases?

Icelandic Phrases for Travelers

iceland travel slogan

Arctic-Images / Getty Images

There is virtually no language barrier for English-speaking visitors to Iceland. Icelandic business executives and government officials are fluent in English and almost all Icelanders speak English to some degree. However, if you want to flatter some Icelanders with a modest attempt at a few words, check out the following common words you might want to use or need on your trip.

Before You Begin

Icelandic is a Germanic language, like other Scandinavian languages, and is closely related to Norwegian and Faroese. Icelandic is more distantly related to German , Dutch , and English. As it shares ancestry with English, there are many cognate words in both languages; which means each has the same or similar meaning and are derived from a common root. The possessive, though not the plural, of a noun, is often signified with the ending  -s , as in English.

The vast majority of Icelandic speakers—about 330,000—live in Iceland. More than 8,000 Icelandic speakers live in Denmark. The language is also spoken by about 5,000 people in the United States and by more than 1,400 people in Canada.

Pronunciation Guide

When trying to pronounce words in Icelandic, some knowledge of a Scandinavian language is useful. Compared to English, the vowels are different, however, most consonants are pronounced similar to English.

The Icelandic alphabet has kept two old letters which no longer exist in the English alphabet: Þ, þ (þorn, modern English "thorn") and Ð, ð (eð, anglicised as "eth" or "edh"), representing the voiceless and voiced "th" sounds (as in English "thin" and "this"), respectively. Below is a guide to pronunciation.

Common Words and Greetings

Iceland is not a society with many cultural rules, and Icelanders are generally informal with each other even in a business setting. That said, here are some common words any "outlander" might want to learn:

Words for Getting

Renting a car to see the land is a popular way to sightsee. However, do not drive recklessly or show off your driving skills. The locals will not be impressed. Also, do not drive too slowly as this can also create a dangerous situation. And whatever you do, do not stop in the middle of the road if you want to take a picture. Pull over first.

Spending Money

Instead of a generic Iceland mug or t-shirt, a nice souvenir from Iceland could be hand-hewn volcanic rock jewelry or a bottle of Brennivin hard liquor. Also, keep in mind that tipping in Iceland is not expected and in some cases can be insulting. Service is factored into the cost already.

Tourism Slogans for Every Country in the World: From Catchy to Cringeworthy

You guys — I have gone down a rabbit hole. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I started searching for country tourism slogans to include on a Country Quick Facts Infographic I am creating for my newly-designed country category pages (check out the test run for Colombia here !).

Before I knew it, I had compiled a comprehensive list of the tourism slogans for every country and territory in the world! So I decided to rank the Top 20 Best and Worst tourism slogans just for kicks. And I also threw in a few tourism logos while I was at it!

It was interesting to see what catchy (or not-so-catchy) taglines countries have come up with to lure tourists, especially since (at the time of this writing) US citizens are banned from all but a handful of these countries due to the coronavirus.

Some countries opted for the easy go-to of alliteration (“Brilliant Barbados”; “Beautiful Burundi”; “Pristine Paradise Palau”; “Timeless Tuvalu”) or assonance (“Epic Estonia”; “Incredible India”). Other countries got a little more creative (Djibouti: “Djibeauty”; Slovenia: “I feel sLOVEnia”; Ukraine: “It’s all about U”).

A few countries decided to make some bold claims (“Dominican Republic Has It All”; “All You Need Is Ecuador”; Honduras: “Everything Is Here”), while smaller, lesser-known countries opted to just tell you where they are located (Andorra: “The Pyrenean Country”; Bosnia & Herzegovina: “The Heart of SE Europe”).

Without further ado, here is my ranking (in alphabetical order) of the Top 20 Best and Worst Country Tourism Slogans. Let’s get the cringeworthy taglines out of the way first before moving onto the catchy ones….

Major change coming to Iceland after 20 years to make supermarket more inclusive

Iceland has decided to change its slogan after twenty years, in a bid to be more inclusive.

Over the years, the budget supermarket has had many celebrity ambassadors – from Peter Andre to Jason Donovan.

But when you think of Iceland, you no doubt think of Kerry Katona, the former Atomic Kitten singer who fronted Iceland’s campaign between 2004 and 2009.

It was also during her post that the phrase ‘that’s why mums go to Iceland’ was rolled out. But now, the retailer is changing its slogan to be more reflective of families.

Recognising that it’s not just mums who are carrying out the domestic duties and it can be dads, relatives, carers, and so forth, Iceland has changed its slogan.

The new line is ‘that’s why we go to Iceland,’ as it’s more inclusive of everyone.

TV personality Josie Gibson is the new Iceland ambassador, ushering in the new saying.

Presenter Josie, who won Big Brother in 2010 and entered the I’m a Celeb jungle late last year, said: ‘I think the new tagline is great because Iceland is not just for mums. Even though mums love it, Iceland is for everybody.’

Iceland’s executive chair, Richard Walker, added: ‘Iceland’s always been number one with mums and our new campaign celebrates our growing customer base, from across all aspects of the great British public,’ saying Josie is the ‘perfect person to encapsulate the friendly welcome’.

Iceland has gone through a few different slogans in the last few decades, most of which focused on mums being the main food shopper.

In the 1970s, its slogan was ‘mums love it,’ which later changed to ‘mum’s gone to Iceland’ in the late 80s.

In 2004, off the back of her I’m a Celeb fame, Kerry Katona took the main stage with the strapline ‘that’s why mums go to Iceland,’ which has stuck for the most part.

In 2014, Peter Andre got in on the action with a new advert with a spoof tagline ‘that’s why Peter goes to Iceland’.

Looking to position itself as the retailer of the people, Iceland also recently became the first supermarket to launch a customer panel, whose manifesto will be shared with political parties ahead of the general election this year.

The panel, made up of seven customers who applied to lead the project, will reflect the views of those who took part in a survey of 6,000 regular customers.

The panel’s first assignment was looking at the impact of inflation on families’ weekly budgets.

All the panelists said they were worse off now than in 2019, with 83% of survey respondents saying government and business leaders were not doing enough to remedy the problem. Price hikes in insurance and utility bills were also said to be crippling families.

Executive chair Richard, who was a Tory Party candidate last year, quit the party and is now supporting Labour.

He said: ‘Visiting stores over the past few months, customers have told me they have had enough of being told what they should care about and wanted their chance to be the voice of the high street. The Iceland Manifesto is their chance to do just that.

‘From what the cost-of-living really means, to supporting our towns and villages, they’ll leave no stone unturned, and we’ll make sure we publish a full summary of their views later this year to hopefully inspire politicians to do less talking and more listening.’

Air's Moon Safari is an era-defining French album worth celebrating, 25 years on

Air's Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin as illustrated on the cover of their 1998 deut album Moon Safari

There's no telling how many special moments have been soundtracked by Moon Safari, the acclaimed 1998 debut album from French duo Air.

An era-defining record of pristine, space-age lounge music delivered with cinematic atmosphere and a distinctively French je ne se quios , Moon Safari was a universal critical and commercial success upon release.

The lush easy-listening music was perfectly suited to post-club comedowns, hip cafes, and make-out sessions: smooth and dreamy enough to be played in the background, but singular and masterfully crafted enough to reward close listening.

It proved highly influential, too. But the wave of mellow, down tempo imitators and 'chill out' CD compilations it spawned struggled to surpass Air's chic, exquisitely woozy beauty.

'It was not meant to be played live'

Jean-Benoît Dunckel, one half of Air alongside Nicolas Godin, never expected Moon Safari's enduring success.

"We never imagined this album could work that way worldwide," he tells Karen Leng on Double J Lunch.

"It took time, it took decades, [but] the success is not by us, the audience made [it]."

This year, the duo has been playing Moon Safari in full around the world on their first tour in seven years, including Australia.

"It was not made to be played live," says Dunckel.

"We had to adapt it for the live [setting]. That is what the people want to get — this special feeling they heard the first time… to live again these feelings."

Having played two nights at the Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid Live , Air will live-stream their show at London's Royal Albert Hall this weekend.

"It's a beautiful venue," says Dunckel, who is keen to preserve a pristine performance of the album online for future access.

"It's really important to do that because… people can also discover the band live. Some people appreciate the live versions more than the recorded versions."

Performing as a trio, alongside drummer Louis Delorme, Air play inside an oblong box adorned with dazzling lights and visuals, which morph from swathes of minimalist colour to the perspective of a spaceship enjoying interstellar travel.

"We play in a box of light. It looks a bit like the studio on the cover of 10 000 Hz Legend," says Dunckel, referencing the band's second studio album — a weirder, wilder reaction to Moon Safari.

Air perform on Sydney Opera House stage with visuals of a ship in hyperspace behind them.

"It could be a home, it could be our world, our head, our architectural concept. It helps for people to enter into a world… people like [that] intimacy."

Dunckel says people often ask: "Are you not bored to play these songs you play for 20 years now?"

"Sometimes I struggle — because you have to concentrate, and you have to play. But I'm never bored. It's always a pleasure."

Moon Safari is a product of its era, but it's also aged beautifully.

It's an evocative listening experience, from the moment lengthy opener 'La femme d'argent' ushers you in with the sounds of water and slinky bassline, through to the weightless pop and robot-voiced melodies of 'Kelly Watch The Stars' and 'New Star in the Sky'.

In 1998, its retro-futuristic arrangements already sounded timeless. 25 years later, its ability to transport your mind and imagination elsewhere hasn't dated one iota.

"It could be a journey, a love story," remarks Dunckel. "That's why we're really attached to it. I think the audience is searching for that, too.

"It helps human relationships in every way," adds Dunckel. Over the years, Air fans have shared "so many stories" of what the album means to them.

"Most of the time it's for love. It's always, 'I met my girlfriend or wife this time'."

Back in 1998, Dunckel told triple j that while hiking in Iceland, his guide revealed Moon Safari was his love-making soundtrack.

There's "probably" plenty of babies in the world with some of the album's DNA in them since, Dunckel estimates of a new generation discovering Air for the first time.

"As we are getting old now, it's becoming that people say, 'oh yeah, my parents were listening to Moon Safari when we were travelling in a car; this family time'."

Sexy Boy, the surprising queer anthem

For many, debut single 'Sexy Boy' was their first introduction to Air. A seductive slice of synth-pop that brought vocoder back to the pop charts and sung in both French and English.

It's a seemingly simple song but Dunckel notes there's "a lot of tolerance and freedom" embedded in it.

"Sexy Boy, first of all, is a strange title because it breaks a certain taboo. The taboo is that heterosexual boys can check out other boys," he explains.

"Also, it became a gay slogan in a way. A gay anthem."

The song took on a new meaning in late 90s Paris when the electronic music scene's wider acceptance of the LGTBQI+ community led to more club and techno nights dedicated to queer punters and DJs emerging.

"There was a lot of gay parties," says Dunckel. "Homosexuality is everywhere in the world, and it's always existed, always there. So, it was important to liberate this movement."

Originally, the song's titular phrase was inspired by Parisian fashion culture.

"People are checking each other out all the time… In Paris, when a couple is meeting another couple, the girl is not going to check out the boy. She's going to check out the other girl: analyse what she wears, how she behaves, what is the fashion or type of the boyfriend.

"Sexy Boy is speaking about that. The fact a man wants to be a pretty man and he is checking [out] other boys."

A popular soundtrack choice, featured in teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You and noughties TV drama Queer As Folk, 'Sexy Boy' is also a testament to youth.

The French verses are "celebrating that golden age of being young," Dunckel explains.

"When you're young you don't realise you're at the top of your life. You have a lot of power, actually… because you're beautiful. Your skin, hair, you feel great, you have a lot of energy."

The makings of a classic

Despite its iconic status, Moon Safari was actually the last roll of the dice for Dunckel and Godin.

Raised in the conservative suburb of Versailles, the pair began making music together after meeting at school. But after having their demo tapes rejected by every record label they approached, they quit music and instead focused on their studies.

Each had established careers — Godin in architecture, Dunckel in mathematics — when an opportunity presented itself in a close friend landing a role with Virgin Records imprint Source.

They landed a deal with the label but ditching their jobs for a full-time career in music to support their burgeoning families was a gamble.

black and white portrait of French duo Air: Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel

"We were 26 years old. We were not sure we come be musicians for the rest of our life," remembers Dunckel. "I was already working [as] a physics teacher… I had a baby."

Thankfully, their risk was rewarded when their debut album became a breakout international hit. Air was swiftly lumped alongside a fresh wave of Parisian artists reinventing the electronic music scene in the late 90s.

Dubbed French touch, the movement included Cassius, St. Germain, Étienne de Crécy, and Daft Punk, who recorded their breakout 1997 album Homework down the street from where Air made Moon Safari.

"There was a kind of energy circulating all over Paris," recalls Dunckel. "Paris is kind of small; all the media, artists and business part of it [were] working all together."

The worlds of music, fashion, contemporary art, cinema — "everything was mixed," Dunckel says.

"At this time, new generations of young people coming from the suburbs are even inside Paris and mixing all these rich, futuristic concepts together with new machines, samplers, computer programs to make music."

A fond farewell to youth

Despite being poster boys for the future of French music, Moon Safari was an evocative, nostalgia-drenched ode to Dunckel and Godin's past.

"In a way it was the end of my youth… That's why the songs [on Moon Safari], there are a lot of regrets and it's a goodbye to our youth and the innocence of it.

"It's full of vibrations from teenage times."

Although labelled an electronic act, Air's music wasn't rooted in beats and house music. Instead, they armed themselves with analogue Moog and Korg synthesizers, vintage drum machines, vocoders and the trusty Rhodes piano.

The resulting compositions bore the esprit of Serge Gainsbourg, electronic pioneers like Jean-Michel Jarre, and the 1970s film and TV soundtracks of Dunckel's childhood.

There's a fondness for the psychedelic grandeur of Pink Floyd and ELO. But also, Burt Bacharach arrangements, particularly in the wistful French horn topline of ''Ce matin là' (This morning) and the easy-going 'You Make It Easy' and 'All I Need', both featuring the lyrics and vocals of Godin's then-neighbour, Beth Hirsch.

From its lush, otherworldly sounds right down to its title, Moon Safari gives rise to cosmic ideas and conducive to escapism. That spirit is central to Air's entire ethos.

"I think music exists in paradise and you can feel this [album] is in a strange interface between our world and something else."

Such ephemeral expressions might be surprising coming from a former physics teacher, but Dunckel says "both sides of your brain help" when it comes to making emotive art.

"There is a mathematic aspect of music, that analyses and helps you perform and conceive music. But there is something else happening, your heart is talking.

"As a musician you're organising the vibrations of your heart and the feelings into music… vibrations travelling into space and air."

"When I do a song, it's all about 'what do I feel?'" Dunckel concludes.

"For me, good means it affects me. No good means I don't feel anything… if it affects me, it's going to affect others, too. They're going to feel the feelings I do, too."

Air live-stream their performance at London's Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 1 June. Details here .

Ever wanted to own your own Victorian island fort?

Well now you can - with two being listed with a guide price of £1m.

Spitbank Fort in Hampshire and No Man's Land Fort off the Isle of Wight have been listed for auction and can be bought separately - or as a pair if you can't pick between the two.

During the Second World War, the forts were used to defend the Portsmouth dockyards.

No Man's Fort is substantially bigger and probably presents itself more as a business opportunity, but Spitbank offers nine large bedroom suites across three floors and could potentially work as a private home to the right buyer.

No Man's Fort has its own traditional English pub, a nightclub, and a helipad, while Spitbank Fort naturally boasts a wine cave plus a swimming pool and spa complex.

"Throughout my career as an auctioneer I've seen several sea forts hit the market that have achieved impressive prices as buyers have sought to pursue these trophy assets," said Robin Howeson, head of Savills Auctions.

"Having been carefully restored by the current owners, No Man's and Spitbank Fort represent exceptional market value, each guided at £1m.

"Both offer an opportunity like no other; a waterfront location, up to 99,000sq ft of space and a chance to champion the heritage and legacy of these iconic maritime structures."

The auction takes place on 18 June.

If you missed out on the general sales but want to bag yourself a last-minute ticket to Taylor Swift's show in Edinburgh tonight , it could set you back a whopping £4,000.

Not to fear, however, as it is currently possible to land yourself a ticket for as little as £271 - if you settle for a somewhat restricted view.

We've checked resale giant Viagogo for the latest prices, accurate as of 10.30am.

As is often the case with popular tours listed on resale sites, many of the tickets are sold individually - so if you're happy to go alone tonight, you're more likely to get a ticket.

For context, a ticket at general sale cost somewhere between £80-£160 depending on where you sit/stand.

As it stands, the cheapest seat with an unrestricted view of the stage is currently up for sale at £323.

Just one ticket is up for £271, but has a "restricted view".

Bringing a crowd

If you're looking to take someone with you, the cheapest pair of tickets without any restricted view will cost you a combined £1,706.

However, if you're happy with a restricted or limited view, you can pay the cheaper price of £538 for the pair (£269 each).

You can buy up to four tickets in the same area for £303 each (£1,212 together) for a restricted view, or £555 each (£2,220 together) for an unobstructed view of the stage.

Getting closer to the action

Standing tickets are much sought after given their proximity to the stage.

As alluded to at the top of this post, one frankly optimistic reseller has listed four general admission tickets for a staggering £4,256 each (in the "floor" section shown in the map below).

However, you can get even closer - with one ticket remaining in the separate section to the left of the stage at £651 and another to the right at £559.

A word of caution

Ticket resale sites, including Viagogo, have previously been accused of "ripping off" consumers amid concerns customers could be turned away at venues because of restrictions on some resold tickets.

The company was told in 2019 that it was required to make a number of changes to the way it collects and presents information about tickets on its site.

It has since pledged to be compliant with UK watchdogs and now offers a "100% order guarantee [which] covers both buyers and sellers".

If you're happy paying over the odds for last-minute tickets, make sure you're buying through a site with such a guarantee and always beware of scams!

House prices in the UK dropped by 0.1% between April and May, data from mortgage lender Halifax shows.

Analysts had expected a drop of around 0.2%, while last week, rival lender Nationwide said its measure of house prices rose in May after falling in the previous two months.

In the 12 months to May, prices rose by 1.5%, Halifax said - faster than the median forecast in a Reuters news agency poll for an annual increase of 1.2%.

"Market activity remained resilient throughout the spring months, supported by strong nominal wage growth and some evidence of an improvement in confidence about the economic outlook," Halifax's head of mortgages, Amanda Bryden, said.

The stable picture for property prices over the last three months was likely to give more confidence to buyers and sellers, she added.

Sir Keir Starmer will shortly promise to get more young people on the housing ladder as Labour announces its "freedom to buy" policy.

We've now got some reaction from business leaders, who've been speaking to Newspage.

Justin Moy, managing director at EHF Mortgages, was not impressed.

"Freedom to buy looks great on the first read, but then you realise it’s actually been in place since 2021 and many lenders don't use it anyway," he said.

"Labour are effectively promoting something that already exists and isn't used," he added.

Andrew Montlake, managing director at Coreco, disagreed, saying it marked a "promising" first offering from Labour.

"This can allow lenders to take a longer-term approach in their offerings and ensure that competitive products are continually available for those with lower deposits.

"Whilst it doesn't solve the long-term housing issues overnight, Labour have at least shown they understand them and have already shown they are willing to speak and engage with those on the front lines, which is more promising for the housing market as a whole should the next government be a red one."

However, many more had a negative outlook.

Lewis Shaw, owner of Shaw Financial Services, was scathing in his assessment, saying: "This policy is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

"Prior to the pandemic, 95% loan-to-value mortgage lending was the norm.

"It happened without any political interference or putting the taxpayer on the hook - has everyone forgotten that?

"If Labour really wants to help young people buy a home, then do the things that we all know are needed: Tax the super-rich, reduce wealth inequality and build more houses. It's not rocket science."

Katy Eatenton, mortgage and protection specialist at Lifetime Wealth Management, said it was "yet another scheme with no real substance", which was echoed by Stephen Perkins, managing director at Yellow Brick Mortgages.

"This policy will not hugely impact the property market," he said.

Shortly, we're expecting Sir Keir Starmer to promise to get more young people on the housing ladder as Labour announces its "freedom to buy".

He's set to speak in the coming hours.

The party will pledge to make the existing mortgage guarantee scheme - which sees the government act as a guarantor for people unable to save big deposits - into a permanent fixture if it wins the election on 4 July.

Sir Keir will also commit to an overhaul of the planning system, including reintroducing housing targets, claiming his measures will see 1.5 million more homes built over the next five years.

Among the planning changes, the party will promise to tax foreign buyers "pricing out young people" from the housing market in order to pay for new planning officers, which it claims will help increase projects being signed off.

It will bring back house-build targets - scrapped by the Tories in 2022 - as well as fast-track permissions to build on brownfield sites, and reform compulsory purchase orders to "stop speculators frustrating housebuilding".

They will also promise to offer "first dibs" on new developments to local people looking for a home and reiterate their pledge to create "the next generation" of new towns.

We've now had the first interest rate cut in the UK, US and EU for years.

Yesterday the European Central Bank (ECB) brought down the cost of borrowing in the countries using the euro - the first reduction since 2019.

Sterling stayed roughly where it has been against the euro for the last two weeks - one pound buys more euro than it has done for most of the last year, €1.1740.

Oil prices have ticked up through the week but are still just below $80 a barrel for Brent crude, the benchmark price.

That's cheaper than the vast majority of this year and good news for motorists.

Signs of stabilisation can be seen in the housing market with the news that house prices fell just 0.1% in May, equivalent to a £170 drop in the average house, according to mortgage lender Halifax.

But renting is still becoming more expensive, just at a slightly slower rate than before, according to property portal Zoopla.

The average rent costs £80 more a month compared with a year earlier.

Higher housing costs have also shown through in a market update from British homebuilder Bellway, which said it expects to sell houses at a higher price point than it previously thought.

The company is a constituent of the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 250 index of 101st to 350th most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange which is down 0.22% this morning.

Wetherspoons pubs are known for their cheap pints.

But how is the chain able to keep prices so low?

Many punters will have heard that this is because the pubs buy short-dated beer from breweries just a couple of months from expiry date - but the owner of the business now says this is not true.

Sir Tim Martin told The Sun : "I've never hung outside the brewery gate waiting for it to go out of date. It would be impossible."

Asked then how the chain is able to keep prices so low, he said that the vast quantities allowed greater profits.

"There's no real secret, we sell a lot of beer," he said.

He also explained the reason he named the chain Wetherspoons - dispelling the myth that it was named after a teacher who said that he would never make it.

Sir Tim said: "This is a story that got twisted and a bit out of hand. I named it after Mr Wetherspoon, who was a very nice man, but couldn't control his class because at the time I couldn't control my punters."

It can be hard to balance the demands of eating well without spending a lot.

In this series, we try to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value - and have enlisted the help of  Sunna Van Kampen , founder of Tonic Health, who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices.

In this series we don't try to find the outright healthiest option, but help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

Today we're looking at chicken.

"When it comes to healthy eating, the first thing that often springs to mind is chicken breast," Sunna says.

That's mainly because it is lean, versatile, and packed with protein, making it a staple in many health-conscious kitchens.

"But what if we told you there are even better options for your wallet and your health?" Sunna says.

Cost savings

Chicken breast fillets can be pricey - sitting at an average of around £8.33 per kilogram.

In contrast, chicken thighs usually come in at about £3.30 per kilogram.

"That's under half the price," Sunna says.

"To put that into perspective - over the course of a year this can save you over £261.56, assuming you consume 1kg per week in your household. Well worth the saving."

Nutritional value

Many people gravitate towards chicken breasts for their lean protein, but chicken thighs have their own set of nutritional benefits.

"While they have more fat, it's important to note that they contain more healthy monounsaturated fats, which are good for heart health," Sunna explains.

"Plus, they're richer in iron, zinc and B12 by at least double."

These are essential minerals that help boost your energy and general wellbeing.

Much of this goodness is down to thighs having more joint cartilage and tendons - which naturally boost the collagen content of the chicken - helping to feed your hair, skin and nails.

"Chicken thighs are not only nutritious but also renowned for their flavour," Sunna points out.

"When slow cooking chicken thighs with bones, you are also getting the benefits of bone broth in the stew which is a great source of collagen, calcium, and magnesium, as well as glycine, arginine and proline which are anti-inflammatory amino acids."

A hidden gem

If you've got the stomach for it, there is one cut of chicken that is ultra affordable and is officially one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world.

"Chicken livers are one of the most economical protein and nutrient sources out there," Sunna says.

"At £3.42 per kilo, they're a similar price to thighs but pack a more powerful nutrient punch."

Chicken livers should really be touted as a superfood due to their high nutrient density, in Sunna's view.

"They are an exceptional source of vitamin A, which is crucial for vision, immune function, and skin health.

"They also boast high levels of B vitamins, particularly B12, which is vital for brain health and energy production.

"Additionally, chicken livers are rich in folate and iron."

While you might be hesitant about the taste or texture of chicken livers, they are incredibly versatile and can be prepared in ways that make them more palatable.

Sunna's go to is to simply fry the livers quickly with onions, mushrooms and a spicy sauce like a peri-peri.

"Swapping chicken breasts for thighs or livers isn't just a cost-saving measure; it's a health upgrade.

"By embracing these underrated parts of the bird, you'll enjoy richer flavours, diverse nutrients, and significant savings."

A note on organic

"The health of the bird and its quality of life will directly affect the nutrition and quality of the meat you consume, and as such, if you can afford it, always opt for free range or organic chicken."

The nutritionist's view - from Nichola Ludlam-Raine, dietitian at  nicsnutrition.com ...

"When it comes to budget-friendly eating, chicken thighs significantly outshine chicken breasts.

"While chicken breasts are renowned for their lean (ie low in calorie and low in fat) protein content, chicken thighs do indeed offer great nutritional benefits such as the presence of more connective tissue in thighs boosts collagen intake, which is beneficial for skin, hair, and joint health.

"As I dietitian I would recommend skipping the skin though, to lower intake of saturated fat - as the preferred type of fat for health is unsaturated, which is found in higher levels in plant foods such as olives, nuts, seeds and avocados.

"Chicken livers are high in vitamin A, essential for vision, immune function and skin health, and also boast significant levels of B vitamins, iron, and folate, supporting brain health and energy production.

"Due to its vitamin A content though, liver, as well as pate, should be avoided during pregnancy (note that plant-derived vitamin A i.e. beta-carotene, does not need to be avoided).

"When it comes to diet, balance and variety is key, and while including richer sources of meat such as chicken thigh and liver may be a good idea from time to time, I would recommend including other cheaper and leaner protein sources too including lentils, beans, chickpeas, tofu, eggs as well as tinned oily fish - the latter for their omega 3 fatty acid content too."

Every Friday we get an overview of the mortgage market with the help of industry experts. This week we have spoken to David Hollingworth, associate director at L&C Mortgages , and Rachel Springall, finance expert at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk .

New research this week - commissioned by the Lib Dems - suggested about 100,000 households will be renewing onto higher rates before the 4 July election. They'll face an average increase of £240 a month.

Ms Springall said: "Those borrowers looking to remortgage this year on a longer-term fixed deal will find the average overall five-year fixed rate is much higher than it was back in June 2019, when it was 2.85%.

"Week on week, the overall average two and five-year fixed rates rose to 5.95% and 5.51%."

These are the lowest rates on offer...

Moneyfacts advises people looking to avoid upfront costs, legal fees etc to look at Best Buys as well as the deals with the lowest rates...

Good news on the horizon?

Arguably the big news for mortgages this week didn't directly impact UK households - it came yesterday when the European Central Bank went first, ahead of the UK and US, in cutting rates, potentially signalling the beginning of the end of an era of high rates.

The Bank of England and US Federal Reserve are forecast to wait a little longer - markets are currently expecting a September cut in the UK.

It's a waiting game - and that's been reflected in a relatively quiet period for rates movements among UK lenders.

Mr Hollingworth said the flurry of repricing announcements - shifting rates upwards - that followed news of inflation falling less than expected in April had "eased back".

According to Moneyfacts, HSBC increased selected fixed deals by up to 0.26% this week, while Cambridge Building Society pulled its two and five-year fixed mortgages at 90% loan-to-value.

Mr Hollingworth said: "Once lenders start to shift rates it can quickly knock onto others.

"As one deal withdraws the next lender will come under pressure, either from a rate perspective or also to protect service levels. That can cause a snowball effect of rate withdrawals."

He is advising people due to renew to "lock in" - knowing you can "review the situation before completing and take advantage of any better rates if they drop back again".

Also of note to Mr Hollingworth has been UK Finance's Household Finance Review, which highlighted that many are taking mortgages over longer terms, with 35 to 40-year mortgages more common.

"That does help to reduce the monthly payments on a repayment mortgage but will increase the total interest over the life of the mortgage substantially," he said.

"It's therefore important for borrowers to keep reviewing the term as their circumstances change or to make overpayments if possible. That will help to cut the mortgage back more quickly and could save thousands in interest."

Donald Trump heads to Las Vegas — will he endorse a Nevada US Senate candidate?

At donald trump's sunday vegas rally, he could endorse sam brown, jeff gunter or another republican candidate for senate ahead of tuesday's primary..

iceland travel slogan

Will Donald Trump endorse a Nevada Republican in the crucial U.S. Senate primary when he returns Sunday for a rally in Las Vegas?

Unlike in the two other states where the Senate seat is considered a toss-up, the former president has not weighed in on Nevada’s race.

Twelve Republicans are competing to face Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in November in an election that could decide control of the U.S. Senate.

At a January rally in Las Vegas, Trump name-checked three of the candidates — Army veteran Sam Brown, former ambassador to Iceland Jeff Gunter and former Nevada Assemblyman Jim Marchant.

It's going to "be a very good race, we'll see what happens," Trump said.

Election guide: Q&A with Republican primary candidates for Nevada's US Senate seat

If Trump makes an endorsement, it could be too late to swing the primary because, as of Wednesday, almost 68,000 Republicans have already voted, according to data from the Nevada Secretary of State's Office .

Brown is considered the favorite — and has a $5.3 million war chest to show it — despite harsh criticism from his fellow Republican candidates .

Gunter has infused his campaign with a $2.7 million personal loan and launched an ad campaign calling himself the most MAGA candidate, using Trump’s slogan to Make America Great Again.

This week, Gunter’s campaign shared internal polling showing him running neck and neck with Brown, each receiving about 30% support from participants in the Kaplan Strategies poll. It also showed 21% of voters still undecided in the survey of about 800 Nevada Republican voters conducted May 30.

In an interview with Politico published Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Montana, chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said “an endorsement may be coming” and that he thinks Trump will endorse Brown.

On the other hand, Gunter supporters could imagine Trump's support will fall toward their candidate because, according to Roll Call , Trump is set to attend a fundraiser Saturday in Las Vegas hosted by wealthy businessman Don Ahern, who backs Gunter.

Other Donald Trump 2024 election endorsements

On Monday, Trump endorsed John Lee in a Southern Nevada race for the U.S. House.

And on Tuesday, Trump posted a video to his Truth Social account saying how important Nevada’s races are to his campaign and urging his supporters to vote — with no mention of the U.S. Senate race.

According to the Cook Political Report , only three Senate races are considered toss-ups: Nevada, Montana and Ohio.

In Montana, Trump endorsed Tim Sheehy, who won that state’s Republican primary.

In Ohio, Trump backed Bernie Moreno, who won Ohio’s primary.

And in Nevada, an endorsement may be on the horizon.
