Drinking alcohol is one of the most popular pastimes on a  cruise vacation.    It’s no wonder then that with the relatively high price of individual drinks and drinks packages and alcohol playing such a large part in a cruise experience, guests talk about and attempt to sneak alcohol on board.

Most ocean sailing cruise ships strictly limit the amount of alcohol you can bring on the cruise.

Usually, it is only wine you can take on a cruise , typically one to two bottles.  Beers and liquors are often prohibited.

Before you decide whether to get around the rules, it might be worth checking out our drinks packages advice and tips, and ways to maximize value and even benefit from hacks such as those highlighted in our How to cheat royal Caribbean drinks package.

Either way, no doubt sneaking on your favorite alcohol and liquors, in particular, could potentially save you hundreds of dollars.

Some people think it’s the only way they can drink on a cruise at 18 to 20, although underage drinking should be discouraged. Whereas others are convinced alcoholic cruise drinks are watered down , so try to take their own.

Finally, it’s worth considering what happens if you get caught sneaking alcohol on a cruise , so you know what you are risking.

Also, its worth checking beforehand if you can bring alcohol on a cruise in the first place for your cruise line of choice. It might be more than you think, or may allow you to use some of the methods below to sneak liquor on instead of wine.

How to Sneak Alcohol on a Cruise Ship

Most of these items are ideal for sneaking alcohol onto a cruise ship.

However, some can be extra useful for having once you are on the ship when it comes to sneaking the use of the alcohol into other drinks without being seen.

This is where small discreet flasks can come in handy.

1. Rum Runners

Rum runners are plastic bags like flasks in which you can pour alcohol and then pack it in your luggage to disguise its contents. 

To make your rum runners less detectable, pack them, so they don’t stand out clearly on the X-rays.  Put the funnel cap end mixed in near other small toiletries, so it doesn’t stand out as a cap to a liquid-filled bag.

If you have any other legit liquid containers, put them layered over the rum runners, so they show on the scan over the rum runners.  If the luggage gets called to be opened, there’s a chance that when they open it and see legit liquid containers, they’ll let it through rather than rummage through all your packed luggage.

If you have more than one item of luggage, split the rum runners into different bags, so if one gets called out for a manual check, the other bags might get through.

If security does a spot check and sees a rum runner, they will know what it is and confiscate it.

Rum Runners on Person

Another way I’ve heard people use rum runners to sneak alcohol on a cruise is to use the smaller bags on their person.  For example, tucked in their cargo pants.

Rum runners are usually sold in multi-packs, which you can find on Amazon here.  Double check you get one with a funnel, so you don’t risk spilling any of your precious liquor.

They are undoubtedly one of the cheapest options for sneaking alcohol onboard .

2. Fake Shampoo Bottles (Disguised Flask)

Fake shampoo bottles are a great way to smuggle some alcohol onboard.  Many are specifically made with sneaking alcohol on cruise ships in mind.

You can purchase whole fake shampoo and conditioner sets, so in theory, you could take enough liquors to make a range of your own cocktails in your stateroom.

The bottles look realistic from the outside.  Make sure you choose one with foam security seals that stop leaks but, more importantly, make the bottles look sealed, so if they are opened by cruise staff, there is no smell of alcohol.

Don’t bother trying to reuse old shampoo bottles.   They are notoriously difficult to clean. You don’t want to contaminate your alcohol with any remnants you inadvertently missed after going through all the trouble of smuggling your favorite liquor onboard.

The other issue with reusing old bottles is they are much more likely to leak.

3. Fake Suncream (Sneak Flask)

Fake suncream flasks are another good option because they naturally contain liquid, so they won’t look suspicious on a scan.

Also, it looks natural in a set if you’re taking different strengths sun creams but really taking different liquors.

The other advantage is they look like natural containers to have around while sunning yourself by the pool, so when you get the opportunity, you can add some alcohol to your soft drinks without suspicion.

They should come with funnels for easy alcohol pouring when filling and also factory seals to keep them watertight and make them look brand new opened.

4. Tampon Flask

Tampon flasks are plastic test tubes that you can fill with alcohol and disguise as a tampon.   Security won’t give them a close inspection if they are discovered in your luggage.

They are more commonly used for festivals and concert-type events rather than cruises.

While they can be used to sneak alcohol onboard, they are of limited use due to their small size.

However, some women carry them around in their bags while in public areas of the ship and use them to add alcohol to soft drinks.

If you use them, make sure you pack them in a water-tight plastic bag to avoid any problems with leakage.

5. Liquor In Wine Bottle Cruise Hack

Most cruise lines allow guests to bring wine on a cruise , typically just one bottle, but sometimes more.

This presents an opportunity to replace the wine with your favorite liquor.   

However, if you choose this method, you have to do it properly and make it look like the wine bottle has never been opened.

It can be a bit more time-consuming to set up compared to other methods.  Recorking the bottle isn’t always easy for some, and then you have to heat the seal so its looks as new as possible.

Depending on the cruise you are going on, an umbrella flask could be an option for sneaking alcohol use.  

They can be used both for smuggling alcohol onboard and on ships or excursions.

7. Binocular Flask

Binoculars are a cruise essential for many on a sightseeing cruise holiday, so what better secret alcohol container than a binocular flask ?

Not being bottle shaped its more likely to go unnoticed through the Xrays.

Another good thing is that each side is a separate flask so if you wanted you can put different liquors in each side, approximately 8 oz each side.

8. Booze Bra / Bra Flask 

A booze bra or, as otherwise known, Liquor bra or wine rack bra.

This is a more extreme way to smuggle alcohol on a cruise, but for some, it’s an option to hide up to 25 oz of alcohol on your person.

It’s one of those methods that sound good but maybe isn’t as good when put into practice.   It might not be a good fit or comfortable for some.  The tube needs to be hidden at all times.  There’s also the possibility it could leak.

However, 25 oz is 25 oz for some, so worth the effort.

9. Mouthwash Bottles

Mouthwash bottles have been a popular way of sneaking alcohol on cruises.  Thoroughly rinse an old Listerine bottle and fill with your favorite clear liquors like vodka and gins. Then, color them with food coloring to match ordinary mouthwashes, typically pinks, blues, and greens.

Or these days, you can buy colored variations of gin and vodka, so you might not even need to add the coloring.

The disadvantage of this method is the cruise lines know it’s an old trick.  Some even mention it in their terms of what they look out for in their alcohol policies, so if they spot it you can expect them to flag it up to be checked.

The temptation is also to buy the larger bottles of mouthwash, which most people wouldn’t normally take on a short vacation.

10. Hairbrush Flask

The hairbrush flask is a good secret alcohol container for carrying around with you.  Holding 6oz of liquor, you can keep it close by at all times in a bag and use it to discreetly top up soft drinks.

The bonus with this alcohol flask is that you can use it for its original intended function as well, as brushing your hair.  Some also double up with a mirror on the back.

11 Wine Backpack & Beach Bags

This Wine backpack or Wine beach bag is ideal for traveling with a large amount of hidden alcohol.  It can hold up to 1.5 liters, so 2 bottles of wine.

You pour your wine or liquor into a pouch hidden within a compartment in the bag.

You can also use it as a backpack in its own right as well.

It could be used to sneak alcohol through security, but more likely used to have it on you around the ship or on excursions, so you have your alcohol discreetly accessible and close by.

Most importantly, its leak proof.  As you can see from the reviews, it works very well.

Foolproof Way To Sneak Alcohol On A Cruise

The most foolproof way of sneaking alcohol on a cruise would be using factory-sealed shampoo flasks.    These are containers you naturally fill with liquid to avoid suspicion.

The factory seal hides any smell of alcohol should they be handled in an inspection.

This works for all cruises, even those that don’t allow any drinks onboard, such as MSC and Costa Cruises which don’t allow non-alcoholic onboard, and only water if it is for medical purposes. This saves the cruise lines time from having to check bottles to see if they sneakily contain alcohol. Plus they make more money from purchases on the ships.

However, guests will still try sneaking alcohol on MSC and Costa Cruises using these methods.

By keeping the alcohol on your person, the alcohol won’t pass through x-ray scanners and is less likely to be detected. But there’s always the risk of security patting you down and discovering the contraband.

While keeping alcohol on your body is effective, the amount you can carry is limited. You’ll only be able to carry as much as you can conceal while keeping it hidden beneath your clothes.

The most popular way people sneak alcohol onto the ship is by replacing the liquid in permitted bottles with alcohol. 

The thought is that by swapping alcohol into shampoo, mouthwash, and other permitted items, security is less likely to take notice. 

However, security may open bottles if they have suspicions about your luggage contents.

Here’s how to sneak alcohol on a cruise:

1. Shampoo Bottles

Bringing Alcohol on Cruise Ships – A Rum Runner Flask Review

When you bring up the idea of bringing alcohol onto a cruise ship, that is, above the amount allowed by cruise line policy, you’re sure to run into two types of people.

There are those who say the practice is despicable – that cruise lines enact rules and guidelines for a reason and they should be followed. Any talk of circumventing these rules will often lead to questions pertaining to the offender’s moral character (an informal survey on CruiseCritic found 4% of travelers are hard-line rule followers, and another 15% say the rules are fair).

Then there are those who believe that the cruise line’s rules are well-intentioned, but choose to bring illicit alcohol on board for a number of reasons. These may include on-board alcohol prices, convenience, or even selection of alcohol offered on-board (the same survey found that 80% of travelers said the policies on alcohol were annoying or needed to change).

In fact – the only subject that brings more controversy when talking about cruise ship guest rights are the smoking policies , but that is a discussion for another day.

So for the moment, we’ll assume that if you’ve never even considered bootlegging booze onto a ship, you might be curious as to the techniques and their success rates.

For research purposes, we purchased the Cruise Kit, which comes with three large and three small flasks.

We filled the flasks with various types of liquor and distributed them throughout our checked bags that would be screened by security and then placed outside our staterooms.

One large flask was placed in with other large toiletry liquids, the other large flask was packed completely out in the open around some clothes. The smaller flasks were placed in several places around a garment bag.

The wait for our bags seemed endless – and every time we heard the rustle of the bags being delivered we’d open the door hoping ours would be there. Eventually our bags arrived (truthfully no later than anyone else’s, it just seemed that way) and the results were in.

All of the flasks had made it through without being confiscated. However, it wouldn’t be fair to say they weren’t detected.

Some fellow guests had also brought alcohol in their checked luggage – and made no attempt to hide it – other than putting the large (original) bottle of Knob Creek in some bubble-wrap and a kids-size life preserver, but that was mainly to protect the glass from breaking.

What we’ve found is that the season, time of year, and overall cruise clientele/age have more to predicting whether or not your alcohol makes it passed security rather than the vessel containing it.

You’ll notice that no cruise line’s alcohol policy mentions profitability of the cruise, even though alcohol sales can play a large role in profitability. Lines typically say their policies exist for purposes of controlling over-consumption which can lead to individuals being disruptive to other guests. Our research has shown that it looks like they’re telling the truth.

We’ve found the enforcement of the alcohol policies gets stricter during peak seasons for college spring breaks and even summer cruises. Enforcement will also be stepped up for theme cruises, such as a popular music act that may attract a rowdier-than-usual crowd.

So, if you’re going to try to bring alcohol onto a ship, using something like the Rum Runner Flasks hidden with similar-sized liquid toiletries is probably your best bet – but it’s not a guarantee – especially during ‘high enforcement’ cruises. Typically the worst thing that happens is it gets confiscated and you never see your booze or your flasks again, which depending on what you bring, could be a sizable gamble.

Other Methods

These are some of the other methods we’ve heard of people using – some crazier than others.

Poor-man’s Rum Runner Can’t afford a rum-runner and want a couple liters of wine? Grab a box of wine and remove the box – Bingo! A bag-o-wine that’s designed to take a beating.

Fill a Listerine bottle with clear alcohol, add food coloring. This will get your booze on board, but no matter how much you wash it, the bottle will still impart the taste of mouthwash to your liquor. There are only so many drinks you can make with mint vodka.

Wine-bottle switcheroo Most cruise lines allow you to bring some wine in your carry-on bags. Not a wine drinker? Find an empty wine bottle, fill it with your favorite liquor, re-cork it (you can cut off the top if you can’t get it all the way), then buy some heat-shrink-foil tops to reseal the top and give it the appearance it hasn’t been opened. People brew their own wine, so these can be found online or in some liquor stores (Google shopping search: wine heat shrink capsules). This is probably the most guaranteed way as it gives the appearance of something the cruise lines condone, but may also require the most preparation and forethought.

Water-bottle switcheroo This used to be a decent method, but lately cruise lines have been known to shake the water bottles to see if they bubble or not. This approach is more often attempted (and failed) when getting back on the ship after a day in port.

Iced-Tea Sitcheroo This is one step up from the water-bottle switcherro – since ice tea bubbles when shaken, and dark liquors often give the appearance of tea, the line would have to conduct a smell-test, which we’ve never seen. Getting the plastic bottles to appear like they’ve never been opened is much trickier on these bottles.

Old-school flask/Traveler Bottle They’ve made plastic flasks for a long time, and traveler liquor bottles are made from plastic to be lighter weight. You can carry either on your person through security as metal detectors won’t uncover them. This method has long been perfected in the concert and sports arena world, and methods include sticking them in cargo shorts to actually taping them to your person. This method is actually where the term ‘bootlegging’ originated during prohibition.

A liquor and beverage consumption policy was created in order for Carnival to be able to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board. Liquor and Beverage Policy Bringing Alcohol On Board – Embarkation Day: Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board. However, at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring on board one bottle (750ml) of wine or champagne, per person, only in their carry-on luggage. A $10 corkage fee per bottle will be charged should you wish to consume this wine in the main dining room; $14 corkage fee per bottle in the steakhouse. (A corkage fee is a charge exacted at a restaurant for every bottle of liquor served that was not bought on the premises) On embarkation day, each guest may bring a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages on board and only in their carry-on luggage. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 bottles and/or cans, 20 ounces each or less. All alcohol/hard liquor/beer (sealed, unopened bottles/cans), wine/champagne over the allowable 1-bottle per guest (sealed, unopened bottles) or excessive quantities of non-alcoholic beverages (over 12 per person, sealed, unopened bottles/cans) will be confiscated and stored for safekeeping until the end of the voyage. The retained item(s) will be available for collection onboard in a designated location on the morning of debarkation. Unsealed liquids that are prohibited will be discarded, as well as any unclaimed items left after the voyage, and no compensation will be given in either case. Large cooler restrictions: Carnival Cruise Lines does not allow guests to bring large coolers on board its ships. However small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 12”H x 12”L x 12”W for the purpose of housing small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage. Screening and movement of large coolers through embarkation is an impediment to the boarding and security screening process. Therefore, large coolers are not permitted as carry-on or checked luggage. Ports-of-Call: Alcoholic beverages of any kind purchased in any Port-of-Call will be retained at the gangway, stored on board and held by Carnival until the end of the voyage. Gift Shops On Board: Alcoholic beverages of any kind purchased in the ship’s gift shop will be stored on board and be retained by Carnival until the end of the voyage. Drinking Alcohol On Board: The minimum age for the purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages in the bars, lounges and gift shops is 21 years of age. In the event that Bar/Restaurant/Gift Shop staff are in question that a guest is less than 21 years old, they shall request picture identification, prior to serving the drink or selling the bottle of liquor. Carnival reserves the right to refuse the sale of alcoholic beverages to anyone.

Royal Caribbean Alcohol Policy (From royalcaribbean.com code of conduct)

Royal Caribbean International guests are expected to be responsible for their actions at all times, including during transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, while onboard, at our ports-of-call, during shore excursions and at our private destinations. Consuming alcohol to excess impairs one’s judgment and reduces one’s ability to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations. Guests who choose to consume alcohol must do so responsibly. The ship’s staff may refuse to serve alcoholic beverages to any guest who does not consume alcohol responsibly. Ship’s personnel may request verification of a guest’s age to verify they are of age to consume alcohol pursuant to this policy. Any guest that violates this alcohol policy, will be considered for disciplinary action pursuant to the “Consequences Section” of this Guest Conduct Policy, and may lose their privileges to use the disco or other areas or facilities of the ship. Guests are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages onboard and Security may inspect containers (water bottles, soda bottles, mouthwash, luggage, etc.) at any time. Alcoholic beverages that are purchased from onboard shops or in ports-ofcall (which must be presented to security upon re-boarding), will be secured by ship’s personnel and delivered to the guest’s stateroom just prior to the conclusion of their cruise vacation. Guests who are under the permitted drinking age will not have alcohol returned to them. The minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Royal Caribbean International ships is 21. In certain circumstances, where local laws permit or require, Royal Caribbean International may modify this policy to permit the minimum drinking age on a ship to be less than age 21, but never less than age 18. Pursuant to such a modification, Royal Caribbean International may also require parent/guardian request/authorization. A decision to modify policy and permit guests below the age of 21 to consume alcohol onboard during a sailing will be made by Royal Caribbean International at the corporate level (and not by an individual ship). Such a decision will be communicated to the ship prior to guest boarding. Guests may contact Guest Services or refer to the Cruise Compass for specific minimum drinking age information on their cruise vacation. For purposes of complying with the minimum drinking age requirements, a guest’s age is established upon boarding at the beginning of the cruise vacation. If a guest celebrates their birthday during the cruise vacation, and thereby becomes of age to consume alcohol, the guest may thereafter ask the Guest Services Manager to modify ship’s records to permit their consumption of alcohol during the remainder of the vacation. The guest will be required to appear at Guest Services to present a government issued form of identification to permit verification of their age. In certain situations, Royal Caribbean International may permit a parent or guardian who is sailing with his or her 18 to 20 year old young adult son or daughter, (or other young adult under their legal supervision) to sign a waiver allowing the young adult to consume alcoholic beverages onboard. In such situations, the authorizing parent or guardian and the young adult must agree to be responsible for ensuring the young adult will consume alcohol responsibly and otherwise comply with the Guest Conduct Policy, including among other things, not providing alcoholic beverages to any other person, regardless of age. On cruise vacations boarding in a country where the legal drinking age is lower than 21 and where a young adult (age 18, 19 or 20) is not traveling with a parent or legal guardian, they will generally not be permitted to consume alcohol. There may be exceptions made to this restriction in areas of the world where local laws require and Royal Caribbean International concurs. Details on such exceptions can be obtained from Guest Services. No guest under age 18 may possess or consume alcohol at any time, while onboard or at our private destinations. No guest under age 21 may possess or consume alcohol at our private destinations. Any guest who goes ashore and consumes alcohol (whether under the supervision of a parent/guardian or not, is responsible for ensuring they consume responsibly and retain their ability to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations when they return to the ship. Parents/guardians are reminded they are responsible for the actions of their child/young adult at all times while on a Royal Caribbean International cruise vacation. Guests who violate any alcohol policy, including but not limited to underage drinking; providing alcohol to minors or young adults; possessing, concealing or attempting to conceal alcoholic items in their luggage, when boarding, or while onboard; engaging in alcohol drinking games; or failing to consume alcohol responsibly, will be considered for discipline under the provisions of this policy.

Please note that with the exception of Wine and Champagne, all guests are prohibited from bringing alcohol on board our ships. If you purchase any alcohol at one of our ports-of-call or in our onboard shops, we will safely store your purchase(s) and on the final night of the cruise it will be available for pick up in a designated area. Wine & Champagne Policy Guests may bring bottles of wine and champagne on board. When bottles are brought on board and served or consumed in any restaurant, public room area or in their stateroom, a corkage fee will be charged according to bottle sizes noted below. 750 ml Bottle: $15.00 1,500 ml Magnum: $30.00 Wine or champagne sent directly to the ship by travel agents, friends, family, etc. or from another retail source, are subject to the same fees. Box wines are not allowed on board.

I was on a cruise a couple weeks ago with Royal Caribbean. They let you bring wine on board during embarkation. Two per stateroom. Here’s what you do. Buy cheap wine and either drink it or dump the wine and keep the bottles in your stateroom hidden from view. Bring a rumrunners plastic flask in your luggage. Also bring a small container of mouthwash or something to hold your booze in while on deck or sunbathing. At the first port of call buy some rum or whatever you want to drink. Buy the booze for next to nothing and pour it in the flask and stuff it in your bag or I stuffed it in my crotch. I wore really baggy shorts and a tshirt. I went into a restroom stall and poured out the booze and left the bottle in the trash. A large flask will hold a 750ml bottle. I did it the entire cruise and didn’t get caught. Hardly spent any money on booze. I bought the soda package because I like rum and coke. If you don’t mind drinking booze with lemonade or iced tea you can get that free in the buffet dining. One guy was drinking rum straight or with water and Mio. Good luck everyone.

I’ve had luck with saline bottles (the large ones people use of rinsing contact lenses)… you need a pair of pliers to pull the top off to fill and a pair of scissors in your cabin to get your booze out. Use clear alcohol like vodka and gin, no extra taste like a mouthwash container because saline is SALT WATER. Just give it a good rinse.

Pack them along side your shoes. Yes, they worked for me. We ended up not drinking anything that we brought. It was a waste of $.

We have used them on our last 10 cruises. I put one in each suitcase. I have never been called to the naughty room. We have also brought box of wine in our suitcases too.

I don't use them to smuggle booze onto the cruise ship.

DH uses a Bi-pap machine that requires distilled water in the humidifier. We usually spend at least one night, sometimes more prior to and after a cruise in a port, so we need the water in our hotel room. (The cruise line provides a gallon jug in the cabin).

I use rum runners to pack some distilled water in our checked baggage prior to our cruises. I also fill them when we are leaving a cruise and will stay in a hotel afterwards.

So much easier than wandering around strange cities in strange countries looking for the distilled water.

I have never had a leak in one, so they do travel well.

They worked great, no problems, the extra precaution I took was putting them in a ziplock bag just in case, but they were filled and tossed into my luggage mixed in with my clothes. Never got caught

I had a small suitcase that was just shoes and toiletries. I put 3 in there, each one inside a Ziploc bag just in case they leaked.

I didn't get caught and I only used a little bit once. It's just easier to buy the drinks at the bar. :D

Yeah, I don't think I'd drink what I brought on board, I was mainly just wondering what peoples experiences have been. I've considered getting them for past cruises (and the one coming up), but the more I think about it, I'd still have to go to the bar for the juice/soda, so I should just buy the drink.

I've brought them on my last two cruises with no problems. I just put them next to my shoes and I also use a zip lock bag. As with the others, I usually don't drink much of it and I just empty what is left down the drain. I like to have it in the room for a late night drink. I don't bring it to save money, simply to avoid leaving the room at night or while the wife is getting ready for dinner.

A couple of weeks ago I packed 2 rum runners, each in a separate bag. When luggage arrived we were missing a bag... I kept saying it would be fine. We walked into the room after exploring the ship, and there was the message light on the phone... FLASH FLASH FLASH. Oh crap, I checked the message. Sure enough "Please come down to deck 1 to get your luggage, it is suspected to have "liquids" in it." I go down to deck one perfectly ready to give up the stash. She asks me "Do you have alcohol in your luggage?" My spur of the moment answer was... "Yes, No... Maybe, I don't know... I might, probably." :-) She promptly asks me to open the suitcase. I flip through the two piles of clothes in the bag, during which the rum runner came very apparently into view. I was caught... No. I quickly pulled out a bottle of hairspray that was right on top. "Maybe this is what they saw?" She seemed to agree with my conclusion and sent me on my way... with my rum runner still safely packed inside.

/FLAME SUIT ON

Oh, and by the way we still rang up a $1000+ bar tab between the 2 of us and only drank half of the contraband liquor.

I bring an empty rum runner. I bring an empty canvas six-pack cooler. I ask the wine steward to fill it with ice every morning. As Diamond+ we get wine as a perk. I have a non-drinker who gives me his wine. I pour the white wine into the rum runner and put it in the bottom of my cooler. I not only have plenty of ice for in-cabin iced tea, I have really chilled white wine, too.

First thing first..... I only want to hear from people who have used them, or know somebody who has used them. I don't want anyone to write something on this thread about how they "FEEL" about smuggler's. :D So have a nice day & be on your way.

When do you pack your rum runners? Do you pack them before your flight or stop on the way to port to fill them? We have used runners for camping a lot but this will be our first try on cruise.

We will be taking our first cruise in November and will also be bringing rum runners. We are thinking it will be less hassle to fill them up before boarding the ship, rather than filling them up before the flight. The booze is cheaper in FL compared to where we live (Canada) so that's another reason as well!

What would be the difference/ advantage in using RR's compared to just packing unopened booze in its own plastic container which we have always done in the checked luggage.

We usually get to the port city a day ahead, so we go shopping for our booze and water, soda,etc. Pack it the morning of our cruise.

We always pack them before we leave home. Have checked them in luggage to Barcelona, Germany and England, although England I did not know about rum rummers. Just packed a bottle. Never had a problem.

We will be filling ours once we're in FLL. We have a day in town before we embark, so we'll be shopping for our booze once we get there. We're not planning on checking luggage, so this is our only alternative, as well with the carry on liquid rules.

Used them many times - not ever a problem, YET. We fly in a day before either with or without store bought bottles in checked lugage. If we have an opportunity to buy at destination hotel city, we purchase after the flight. Then, at pre-cruise hotel, transfer to RR's. Simple, easy no problems - SO FAR. I am sure there will be the day where we will be called to the "naughty room". But, in the last 9 RCCI cruises spaning 7 years, we have had good luck with the RR's.

BUT - we've been on 5 cruises on RCI in the last year and believe me, we have heard nashing of teeth and renting of clothes from people who have had their illegally "imported" booze removed from their checked bags on the last 3 cruises!

Once upon a time many years ago my wife went to Hawaii to visit her girl friend and put an UNopened bottle of CC in her checked bag...on the airline

for whatever reason - the bottle leaked and ruined about 1,400$$$ of her best clothes...

So, you spend 2, 3, 6, 10,000$$ on a cruise and want to save HOW MUCH by sneaking in booze?

Make friends with your barkeep and I'll bet you'll get triple shot drinks and probably every 2nd or 3rd one for free.... the people who are really cheap never think to "over" tip their bartenders, do they? I see them all the time. They always pay full price and get "standard" drinks....

People never cease to amaze me..... the folks that line up outside the dining room ten minutes before it opens....or carry on cases of bottled water... or take packets of tea and towels home... or don't pay for any gratuities...

I couldn't agree more. Personally the joy of vacation and cruising is having my drinks made for me and meeting the great staff that make the cruise great..

I fill them at home prior to flying. They go in my checked luggage. I fill them about 60% or so so they don't have a big round profile (rumrunners says no more than 85% full anyway). I put them in a ziplock as well. I did have one leak once from the welded seam near the cap. I also get ALL the air out. Once off the plane, I move them near the wheels / bottom of the suitcase so they are even less noticeable going through the ship's x-ray. Have a good cruise.

its not really hard to get booze on the ship we just got off the oasis and in florida the day before my dad got a 6 pack of busch and put it in a suit case and was still in it when we got our bags back on the ship

The "cruise pack" has several different sizes in it and they all work great. A couple of tips: don't fill them up all the way and get all the air out before capping. Put them in a good quality freezer ziplock bag just in case you have a leak. Try to place them near a hard edge in your suitcase, near the bottom or side, for crush and xray protection. You can also place hard objects such as shoes, nuts, hairspray cans, etc for further xray protection. I always fill em up at home rather than wait to get to the port city, just for convenience....never had a problem with them. enjoy!

thanks for the tip. even though the ship has tons of food, i do like some snacks in the room along with the rr's such as cashews. now i will remember to pack as camo.

There are a couple of advantages. The Rum Runner company gets to make a tidy profit, and since it's not longer the orginal container, the cruise employees can just dump them out, rather than saving and returning the contents to you, if they happen to confiscate them.

Thanks paul, since the original plastic booze bottles come in a nice retangular flat size we will just continue to use them. Never had a leak or a breakage. Plastic is plastic I guess.

Go to the local store the night before and choose then load them up. We took all sizes so we could be prepared in case we found something special to take along. ;) They packed so easy and no problems with them. :)

This was the first time we left out of Ft. Lauderdale. Who knows if that had anything to do with it. I'll have to order a couple of 8 oz. RRs to replace the ones we lost before our next cruise. :)

I think they step up detection during spring break. But if one made it through, they weren't doing a thorough job of it.

I haven't used the rum rummers, but if I did, I wouldn't fly with them just because of the weight and fear of what altitude changes might do to them. I'd stop on the way to my hotel or in the morning before the cruise and fill them just before boarding.

1) Altitude has little to no effect on them if you get all the air out.

2) The aircraft is pressurized to the equivalent of about 7000 to 8000 feet above sea level, so it is no worse than say driving with them in mountainous parts of the western US.

Just put 2 32oz, 1 16oz and 1 8 oz in the packed suitcases tonight. Will get a 12 pack of beer in LA and pack it before we get to San Pedro.

(Crown and vodka in the two large, two flavors of rum in the smaller.)

we always leave home day prior to cruise, have the shuttle driver stop at a liquor store, run in and select the booze to be poured the day we leave for the port. Rumrunners are great, though I always bring extra ziplock bags to prevent any unforseen accidents. They are sturdy, though. I bought the cruise package, 3 lg and 3 small. Perfect for the fifths and the small ones fit into purse nicely, ready to mix with the free beverages offered. We still manage to spend plenty since hubby likes his beer and I enjoy a glass of champagne at sailaway. Nobody will notice a drop in revenues and everyone is happy!
