MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Schuyler Jones, a globe-trotting American anthropologist and adventurer whose exploits drew comparisons to iconic movie character Indiana Jones, has died. He was 94.

Jones’ stepdaughter, Cassandra Da’Luz Vieira-Manion, posted on her Facebook page that Jones died on May 17. She said she had been taking care of him for the last six years and “truly thought he might live forever.”

“He was a fascinating man who lived a lot of life around the world,” she wrote.

Da’Luz Vieira-Manion didn’t immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press on Saturday.

Jones grew up around Wichita, Kansas. His younger sister, Sharon Jones Laverentz, told the Wichita Eagle that her brother had visited every U.S. state before he was in first grade thanks to their father’s job supplying Army bases with boots.

He wrote in an autobiography posted on Edinburgh University’s website that he moved to Paris after World War II, where he worked as a photographer. He also spent four years in Africa as a freelance photographer. In his 1956 book “Under the African Sun,” he tells of surviving a helicopter crash in a marketplace in In Salah, Algeria, the Wichita Eagle reported . After the helicopter crashed he discovered he was on fire; gale-force winds had reignited the ashes in his pipe.

“Camels bawled and ran, scattering loads of firewood in all directions,” Jones wrote. “Children, Arabs and veiled women either fled or fell full length in the dust. Goats and donkeys went wild as the whirling, roaring monster landed in their mist ... weak with relief, the pilot and I sat in the wreckage of In Salah’s market place and roared with laughter.”

He later moved to Greece, where he supported himself by translating books from German and French to English. He decided to drive through India and Nepal in 1958. He said he fell in love with Afghanistan during the trip and later enrolled at Edinburgh to study anthropology.

“He was more interested in the people and cultures he was finding than he was in photography and selling those,” his son, archeologist Peter Jones, told the Wichita Eagle.

After graduating he returned to Afghanistan and began to study local communities living in the country’s remote eastern valleys. He parlayed that research into a doctorate at Oxford University and went on to become a curator and later director at Pitt Rivers Museum that houses the university’s archeological and anthropological collection. Upon retirement, he was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire award, one step below knighthood.

Similarities between Jones and George Lucas’ Henry “Indiana” Jones Jr. character are striking. Aside from the name and the family business — Indy’s father, Henry Sr., was an archaeologist, just like Schuyler Jones’ son, Peter, are archeologists — they were both adept at foreign languages and wore brown fedoras.

And like Indy, Schuyler Jones believed artifacts belonged in museums, Da’Luz Vieiria-Manion told the Wichita Eagle. Eric Cale, executive director of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, told the newspaper that Jones permanently donated his grandfather’s artifacts to the museum. Jones wrote in his 2007 book “A Stranger Abroad” that he wanted to find the Ark of Covenant and donate it to a museum, which is exactly what Indy accomplished in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — at least until the U.S. government seized the relic and hid it away again at the end of the movie.

Pat O’Connor, a publisher who worked with Jones, told the newspaper that Jones had a “low tolerance” for slow-witted and pretentious people.

“I’ve never met a man so talented and capable and at the same time approachable,” O’Connor said. “But if you transgressed . . . by trying to present yourself as somewhat above your station intellectually, then that is the end.”

Jones wrote in “A Stranger Abroad” that he first heard of Indy in the 1980s when a museum director in Madras asked him if he was the real-life version. He wrote that he had no idea what she was talking about, but later thought the comparison was driving more students to attend his lectures at Oxford.

Jones was married twice, first to Lis Margot Sondergaard Rasmussen, and then to Da’Luz Vieria-Manion’s mother, Lorraine, who died in 2011. He later began a relationship with actress Karla Burns, who died in 2021, the Wichita Eagle reported.

He is survived by his son, three daughters, a sister, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, the newspaper reported.

This story corrects Schuyler Jones’ field of study; he was an anthropologist, not an archeologist.

Dallas designer incorporates Asian style to give globe-trotting couple their dream home

Inspired by the homeowners’ travels to china, this modern new build is sleek and serene..

Interior bright and airy kitchen with midcentury modern design touches and Asian inspiration.

When Shawn and Jordan Flynn decided to start a family, they knew they needed a bigger house. Reluctant to move from their quiet Dallas neighborhood, the couple reached out to Eddie Maestri, owner and creative director at the award-winning Dallas architecture and design firm Maestri Studio, to explore ideas. Together, the trio conceived a plan to replace the 1950s ranch-style home where the Flynns had lived since 2012 with the property of their dreams.

“Jordan and I have always shared a love of modern architecture but also wanted to include design elements we fell in love with during our time living abroad,” recounts Shawn Flynn, whose job had relocated the couple to Chengdu, China, from 2015 to 2017. After giving Maestri a tour of their home, they shared Pinterest boards and snapshots of pages from interior design books and magazines to convey their personal style. “Eddie and his team nailed the overall concept from the first presentation meeting,” Flynn says.

Modern kitchen with large quartz island, black floating cabinets and light brown wooden...

The result of their collaboration is an open and airy two-story house that incorporates midcentury modern touches with a nod to Asian architecture and southern California design.

True to the midcentury ethos of bringing the outdoors inside, oversized glass windows and doors fill rooms throughout the home with natural light. Maestri also used white oak slats to subtly separate spaces in the open floor plan and make a statement in the kitchen.

“We wanted the kitchen to be very bright and functional,” says the architect, whose team installed a double waterfall quartz island in Caesarstone’s Statuario Nuvo in the center of the space. “We also wanted to give them as much storage as possible,” Maestri notes, since the family would be expanding. The solution was to add custom floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in the kitchen and a separate walk-in pantry.

Built-in shelves contain books, baskets, artwork and sculptures from China.

Matte black dome pendants by Regina Andrew and a row of black slab front cabinets over a Faber range complement the lighter tones of the white oak drawers and cupboards by Woodshop Custom Creations and quartz backsplash. A few floating shelves provide added space to showcase decorative bowls and dishware, while a pass-through window that opens to the dining room makes entertaining easier and can be closed off for privacy.

The team at Maestri Studio designed the finishes for each room, including lighting and cabinetry, but Jordan Flynn selected the furniture and home accessories, including several pieces the couple picked up during their travels. The founder of the Mod + Jo jewelry brand also suggested a few design flourishes, like herringbone floors in the dining room, which features a solid walnut table from Article, chairs from Rove Concepts, and artwork by Maria Murphy and BYCDesign Studio. To keep the space grounded, Maestri chose an understated midcentury modern chandelier with milk glass shades from Generation Lighting to illuminate the room after dark.

Two-story windows form one wall of a long hallway that leads to the master suite, creating a sunny, tranquil environment. The bedroom also has windows on both sides with views of an inner courtyard and the main backyard area, changing the lighting at different times of day, notes Maestri. The minimalist decor includes a midcentury-inspired platform bed and two nightstands from West Elm, and an abstract ceiling lamp from France and Son.

Large soaking tub inside a walk-in shower area with marbled green wall tiles.

In the majestic master bath, a refined Wyndham Collection soaking tub with brushed brass fixtures looks out to the private courtyard. The trio of tall mirrors mounted above a custom white oak vanity on the opposite wall reflect the muted green porcelain wall tiles from Concept Surfaces, creating a calming backdrop. “We wanted it to feel very spalike, very Zen,” says Maestri of the bathroom, which also opens to a secluded outdoor shower.

The serene SoCal atmosphere with Asian design touches perfectly expresses the Flynns’ vision for their residence, and the two-story rebuild now gives them room to grow. “We love how Maestri incorporated the indoor and outdoor flow throughout our home,” says Flynn. Having access to the courtyard from the living room, hallway and master suite also gives the couple the option of creating a large communal space for entertaining this summer. “On the rare Dallas evening when the high is in the 60s or 70s, we can open all the doors and share a drink next to the fire pit. It is truly something magical.”

Confessions of a globetrotting teen fraudster who scammed $1.9 million

An audacious teenager’s ploys funded an extremely lavish lifestyle and he was wanted by the police at home and abroad.

An audacious teenage scammer became such an adept con artist he could persuade credit card firms to give him fraudulent plastic in his own name.

Elliot “Fiddle” Castro came up with the ploy in a bid to maintain a lavish lifestyle funded by thousands of card details he nicked during an astonishing crime spree.

It is just one of many jaw-dropping confessions Castro, of Glasgow, Scotland makes in a warts-and-all documentary about becoming a globetrotting rip-off merchant by 18.

And at 20, he’d spent more than $1.9 million conned from innocent people and was wanted by cops at home and abroad, The Sun reported.

Castro, now 41, recounts his astonishing years as an elusive kid conman in the BBC ’s Confessions Of A Teenage Fraudster .

He says: “By age 20, I’d spent well over a million pounds of other people’s money all over the world. Once you’ve had a taste of something nice it’s very hard to go back. You don’t do all of that without getting banged up now and then.

“But no level of guilt or length of sentence had ever persuaded me to stop.”

Castro first got involved in crime after landing a job at a call centre selling mobile phones.

Aged 16, he pretended he was 18, meaning he was put in a role that gave him access to personal details from customers.

He eventually got sacked but left having harvested enough sensitive data to start getting lenders to send credit cards to his home.

Elliot Castro in the new documentary. Picture: BBC/Confessions Of A Teenage Fraudster

He said: “Other 16-year-olds were trying to get into a nightclub on fake IDs, while I was cheating innocent card holders out of their own money.

“And I wasn’t bad at spending it either. I lived a life you could only dream of.

“The best hotels, the finest restaurants, first class as standard and none of it paid for from my own pocket.

“I’d love to tell you I got away with it all but for every night I enjoyed in a five-star hotel I endured many more behind bars.”

Castro once spent a whopping $21,000 in a three-day spending spree.

And as his scams mounted up he found himself being drawn into bizarre scenarios.

Once, after nicking a medic’s details, he was on a train and paid for his ticket with a card that marked him out as a doctor.

In his younger years, at the height of his crimes. Picture: BBC/Confessions Of A Teenage Fraudster

But when unexpectedly a call came over the loudspeaker looking for medical help, Castro was in trouble.

He recalled: “The train inspector remembered the card was in the name of a doctor”.

Moments later Castro, still just a teen, found himself helping a stricken woman with two other medics rather than tell the truth.

He said: “She took me through the buffet car where there was another passenger and two other doctors.

“Now I had not got a proper idea of what was going on with this lady but I thought it looked like a panic attack – in my ‘expert medical opinion’.

It’s reminiscent of scenes from actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s 2002 film Catch Me if you Can.

“And fortunately the other two doctors agreed with my medical diagnosis.”

During his criminal days he once even posed as an officer from the serious fraud squad to contact credit card firms in an effort to find out his “wanted level”.

He said: “I asked to be put through to their fraud departments, and explained that I was calling from the Serious Fraud Office.

“One by one, they all said the same thing.”

He adds: “I had the Irish and UK police after me, along with one of the world’s largest travel retailers. Now I could add the biggest credit card companies to that list.”

He moved to Belfast and switched from credit card scams to a ruse where he’d get hard cash wired to him.

It sparked a period of chaotic spending that included buying a BMW worth $95,000, shopping trips to Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles and a $19,000 casino splurge in Monte Carlo.

But as he struggled to cope with the guilt of living a lie, he became sloppy.

He said: “The thrill had gone. I was spending and partying on autopilot.”

He was eventually snared after a shop assistant became suspicious when he bought $3800 of gift vouchers from Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh.

And in 2005 he was sentenced to two years in an open prison aged 21.

Owen Miller, fraud investigation manager, Expedia. Picture: BBC/Confessions Of A Teenage Fraudster

Castro said: “Things could have gone one of two ways for me but the last time I came out of prison I decided I would never go back.”

Owen Miller, fraud investigations manager at Expedia, said: “In my time at Expedia I investigated somewhere around 1000 total individual cases and Elliot is in the top five – if not the top.”

The reformed con, who now produces music and advises on fraud prevention, felt now was the right time to speak out.

Coco Gauff's French Open run puts Delray Beach tennis star in third straight Grand Slam semifinal

globetrotting or globe trotting

Coco Gauff just won't slow down. The tennis phenom burst onto the scene in 2017, when at 13 she became the youngest finalist in the U.S. Open junior division. She would win the U.S. Open six years later.

And the resident of Delray Beach, Florida , isn't done yet now that she's in her 20s. The No. 3-seeded Gauff beat No. 9 Ons Jabeur in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) to make the French Open semifinals. Starting with her win at the 2023 U.S. Open , this makes three straight appearances in a grand slam semifinal. She opened the year with a loss in the Australian Open semifinals .

Gauff, who will be the No. 2 ranked player in the world after the tournament, lost in the French Open semifinals to two-time reigning champion Iga Swiatek , the No. 1 player in the WTA rankings. The Florida tennis sensation is more than just a prime athlete, using her platform to speak out on social issues and support causes important to her.

Here's what to know about Gauff as she continues her incredible play:

Where is Coco Gauff from?  Delray Beach, Florida

Coco Gauff was born March 13, 2004, in Atlanta. But she grew up in  Delray Beach , about 20 miles south of West Palm Beach and 53 miles north of Miami.

She did not go to high school locally because of her globetrotting tennis career, but she did  earn her high school degree  in 2022.

Has Coco Gauff won a Grand Slam? She's a U.S. Open champion

Gauff has made it to two major finals: the 2023 U.S. Open and the 2022 French Open. She lost to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-3 in the French Open final.

Gauff  defeated No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka  in the 2023 U.S. Open final to win her  first Grand Slam title .

The victory helped propel her to become the  highest-paid female athlete in the world , according to Sportico.

Is Coco Gauff in a relationship? Who is Coco Gauff's boyfriend?

Coco Gauff told Time that she's been dating someone for about a year but wants to keep his identity private. She has said he's from Atlanta and that her mom was his fourth-grade teacher.

“This is my first real relationship,” Gauff told Time. “To just have someone to talk to who is not involved in tennis at all gives me a fresh perspective.”

How did Coco Gauff get her nickname? What is Coco Gauff's real name?

Coco is a nickname: The tennis star's birth name is Cori Gauff, an homage to her father, Corey. Gauff  told Sports Illustrated Kids in 2021  that the nickname came about because it would be confusing for people calling their names.

"I believe it was my aunt who said, 'Oh, we should just call her Coco,'" she said. "When my dad was growing up, people used to call him Co and I guess they just said, 'Oh, Coco’s a cool nickname.' Ever since then, I’ve been going by Coco. For sure more people used Coco than Cori."

Coco Gauff speaks out against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, in support of social causes

Gauff has used her fame to give a platform to a variety of causes, namely the importance of mental health. After winning her semifinal match en route to winning the 2023 U.S. Open, she shouted out fellow tennis star Naomi Osaka and thanked her for raising awareness for mental health.

She has spoken out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and against the Florida law critics call  "Don't Say Gay,"  which effectively bans teachers from talking about LGBTQ issues such as gender identity and sexual orientation. Before the French Open, she called on Florida's youth to vote and criticized Gov. Ron DeSantis , telling the Associated Press it was "a crazy time to be a Floridian, especially a Black one at that."

“We aren’t happy with the current state of our government in Florida, especially everything with the books and just the way our office operates,” Gauff said, referring to the rise in book bans in Florida schools and libraries.

She also has used her platform for less serious causes,  calling out the USTA  for making her and other athletes look like  "hideous looking people"  in an Australian Open promotion styled after Nickelodeon's "Wild Thornberrys" cartoon.

Coco Gauff started at same tennis facility as Venus and Serena Williams

Gauff trained at  Pompey Park , the same tennis grounds where Venus and Serena Williams developed into world-class tennis stars after moving to Florida in the 1990s.

“I’ve been playing there since I can remember,”  Gauff said in 2018 . “My first tennis memory is there. Everyone there, I feel like we’re all a big family. I’m practicing there tomorrow.”

The Williams sisters ruled the tennis world through most of the 21st century. Serena has 23 major titles, one behind Margaret Court for the most all time, spanning from the 1999 U.S. Open to the 2017 Australian Open. Venus won seven major singles championships, starting with Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2000 and ending with the 2008 Wimbledon title. And the two combined for 14 more Grand Slam doubles titles.

When Gauff was awarded the  key to the city of Delray Beach  in 2018 at 14 years old, she said she dreamt of being "the next Serena Williams." And her breakout win came in 2019 when she beat Venus in the first round at Wimbledon. The 15-year-old made it all the way to the Round of 16 that year.

Who are Coco Gauff's parents ? They were both athletes

Like many star athletes, Coco Gauff is  from an athletic family . Her dad, Corey Gauff, played college basketball at Georgia State from 1990 to 1993.

Her mom, Candi Gauff, was a  track star at Florida State  from 1988 to 1992 when she was Candi Odom. She was also the South Florida Sun Sentinel's  Athlete of the Year twice .

How many brothers does Coco Gauff have?

Coco has two younger brothers, Codey and Cameron.

When is Coco Gauff's next match in French Open?

  • Time: 9 a.m. Thursday, June 6
  • TV: Tennis Channel and NBC
  • Streaming: Peacock  ($5.99 per month),  fuboTV  (7-day  free trial ),  YouTube TV  (2-week free trial),  Hulu + Live TV  (7-day free trial)

No. 3-ranked Coco Gauff plays No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the French Open semifinals no earlier than 9 a.m. ET on Thursday, June 6. Coverage from Roland Garros will start on the Tennis Channel, and NBC will jump in at 11 a.m. The whole tournament can be streamed on Peacock , and other streaming options include  fuboTV , which offers a free trial to potential subscribers.

IYCRMM: Crime-solving goes globetrotting

Book reviews on "the silver bone," "the last murder at the end of the world," "high vaultage," "the murder of mr. ma," "how to solve your own murder, and "the busy body".

True Crime and Crime Fiction have become such reading favorites all around the world that it’s not surprising to find wonderful examples of Crime Fiction from different points of the globe. Quite often, these works expand the genre to provide eloquent social commentary. Here are some of the latest… and best.

The Silver Bone by Andrey Kirov

Set in the city of Kyiv in Ukraine in 1919, when World War I had ended but political turmoil persisted, with as many as six factions vying for control of the country, this wryly humorous novel is both a crime mystery and a history lesson. Kirov, the author of Jimi Hendrix Live in Lviv, returned to his beleaguered nation when it was invaded by Russia—he had been living in the USA at the time.

In Silver Bone, our protagonist is the one-eared rookie detective, Samson Kolechko. We are introduced to Samson in a highly charged, dramatic, and visceral manner: his father is bludgeoned to death by Bolsheviks during a street protest, and Samson is saved from further injury by his father, resulting in the loss of an ear. Remarkably, he manages to save the ear, catching it in his hand.

Two Red Army soldiers commandeer the apartment where Samson used to live with his father, and before long, Samson realizes they’ve been looting to facilitate their plans of desertion. When he reports this, Samson is recruited into the force. As a reluctant detective, Samson soon finds that he can achieve a lot as a member of what passes for law enforcement during this unstable political time. Samson’s infatuation with a young girl who works in the Census Bureau becomes an added incentive to stay on the force, as it means he can help her and her family.

With an element of East European-style magical realism, the saved ear, placed in a tin box, allows Samson to hear what’s going on at police HQ even when he is in his apartment. It’s a clever gimmick.

The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton

Turton, the author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, which was celebrated in 2018 as the "future of crime and mystery fiction" and won a Costa Book Award for First Novel, has released his third novel. Once again, it’s a high-concept mystery novel, set in the near future on an island that serves as the last outpost of humanity—the rest of the world having been destroyed by a deadly fog. On this island, there are 122 villagers and three scientists, plus an elaborate security system that keeps the fog at bay, preventing it from engulfing the island.

The mystery begins when one scientist is found murdered, the security system is compromised, and there are 107 hours to solve the murder and repair the system to prevent the approaching fog from overtaking the island. What seems to be an omniscient narrator is, in fact, an AI created by the lead scientist to help maintain order and regularity of lifestyle on the island. The intricate plotting raises questions about what makes us essentially human, and be prepared for some surprises along the way.

This darkly drawn future world is not what we would normally anticipate. While there are elements of science fiction, they are never outlandish or out of place. The internal logic of the story ensures that while suspension of disbelief may be required, it is not at the expense of credible enjoyment. The short-term memories of all the island’s inhabitants have been erased, creating a situation where the murderer is unaware that they committed the crime the previous night. It’s fascinating stuff, especially once you’re invested in the book.

High Vaultage by Chris and Jen Sugden

Described as a mash-up of Douglas Adams and Charles Dickens, the Sugden writing tandem reimagines an 1887 London that’s been rechristened Even Greater London. It’s a steampunk, biopunk alternative past where Queen Victoria reigns, but she’s been reassembled and re-engineered due to assassination attempts and near-fatal ailments. We meet Clara Entwhistle and Archibald Fleet, who together have formed the very first private detective agency. Clara is a journalist who loves crime-solving, while Archie is a "resurrected" police officer. Despite being revived, he’s listed as "deceased," so the force had to let him go to avoid the anomaly of having someone officially listed as dead employed and receiving a salary.

When a mysterious kidnapping is reported to the agency, this case comes alongside that of a private bank whose premises have been broken into, though nothing was physically taken. The break-in at the bank is just one of several such occurrences that have baffled both the police force and the media. Each time, nothing is stolen, but a disoriented person is found in the vault. When the coincidences pile up, with the disoriented people always being Brunel engineers, Entwhistle and Fleet realize that something rather disturbing is going on. These Brunel engineers are behind the perpetual retooling of Even Greater London, and whatever has gone amiss has great repercussions for the business of running the country. Conspiracy theories abound, and there’s deductive reasoning and humor as the plot chugs along.

The Murder of Mr. Ma by John Shen Yen Nee & SJ Rozan

Set in London in 1924, the pairing of Chinese academic Lao She and fellow Chinese Judge Dee Ren Jie leads to an unlikely Holmes and Watson team-up composed of Chinese visitors to London. A serial killer targeting Chinese immigrants prompts the partnership, promoted by none other than Lord Bertrand Russell. This mix of true history, real historical figures, and the imagined duo of Chinese detectives makes this a unique mystery thriller. Imagine the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes film franchise with Downey and Law, but with renowned Chinese actors portraying the lead roles. A fatal, deadly butterfly sword appears to be the major clue behind the killings.

Dee is investigating the murders of men he knew during World War I, members of the Chinese Labour Corps who were used in France as the first wave facing the German forces. Encounters with the aristocracy, the street-child telegraph, and dealings with churchmen and thieves all add local color to this novel. Blatant racism and a cavalier disregard for political correctness are depicted, reflecting the era. Skirmishes featuring Chinese martial arts amaze the London city folk, adding to the cinematic quality of the action and deduction. This novel has the potential to be adapted into a TV series, which would be something to look forward to. In the meantime, find a cozy seat and enjoy this engaging novel.

How To Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin

There are two distinct timelines in this mystery novel. One is set in 1965, when we meet 16-year-old Frances Adams. Highly impressionable, she is captivated by a fortune teller at a country fair who predicts that she will one day be murdered. Along with other cryptic statements, this prediction rules her life and turns her into something of a recluse at the Castle Knoll estate in Dorset. The other timeline occurs sixty years later, when grand-niece Annie Adams, in between jobs in London, is asked to visit Aunt Frances to discuss her will. This will be the first time she meets her great-aunt. But when she arrives at the Castle with the family lawyer and other relatives, they find that Frances has suddenly expired.

Needles coming out from the thorns of the roses that Frances handled earlier in the morning suggest that the 1965 prediction has finally come true. As Frances' last act of revenge against the skeptical friends and family members who had disregarded the prophecy for decades, her newly revised will stipulates that whoever solves her murder inherits her millions. Annie, Saxon Gravesend, and Oliver, the grandson of the family lawyer, are all tasked with resolving the mystery of Frances' demise—which, it turns out, is from an overdose of iron, not the roses.

The stage is set for the two timelines to intersect as we follow Annie in solving the mystery. The stakes rise even higher as Annie uncovers truths about her own provenance, making this an engaging read.

The Busy Body by Kemper Donovan

Donovan is known for his podcast All About Agatha, so it’s clear where his loyalties and predilections lie. This contemporary murder mystery pays reverential homage to Agatha Christie and her locked room mysteries. The narrator is a renowned ghostwriter, and when we meet her, her agent is asking if she’s ready to take on Dorothy Chase Gibson. Gibson is a former Senator and an independent candidate for President. She split the vote and is now blamed for the shocking result of having an ultra-conservative in the White House. She has ‘retired’ to her Maine estate. When a neighbor dies under mysterious circumstances and Dorothy becomes implicated in the toxicology report, a fresh mystery has come to this upmarket Maine town.

While the politician Gibson is wonderfully fleshed out and becomes a riveting character to follow, full credit goes to Donovan for making our unnamed narrator just as interesting. With a mind of her own and motives galore, we truly enjoy being led by her on this thrilling journey. And thrilling it is, as in classic Agatha Christie mode, there are MacGuffins, red herrings, and sidebar journeys that add to the atmosphere without detracting from the case at hand. The powers of deductive reasoning of the Senator are pitted against those of our narrator, and it’s fun to watch them operate as a team while trying to outguess each other.

There’s a bodyguard who becomes the object of lust for our narrator, and while it’s a fine narrative strand, one could criticize how many pages are devoted to this subplot. But, all in all, a very fine read!
