Florida is a top car destination for 4th of July. Here’s when (and when not) to drive

AAA projects Independence Day travelers will set new records both nationwide and in Florida.

More than 70.9 million people around the U.S. are expected to travel 50 miles or more away from home, with nearly 4.5 million of those travelers hailing from Florida.

“The summer travel season is off to a hot start and we expect to set new travel records on the road and in the sky during the week of Independence Day,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group, in a statement. “There will be 3.5 million more travelers than last year.  That means even more people at airports and popular attractions like beaches, lakes, and theme parks.”

What day is July 4th, 2024? Is it a federal holiday?

The July 4 holiday is on a Thursday this year. It is one of the 11 federal holidays in the U.S.

See all federal holidays:

  • New Year’s Day  - Jan. 1
  • Martin Luther King’s Birthday  - 3rd Monday in January
  • Washington’s Birthday  - 3rd Monday in February
  • Memorial Day  - last Monday in May
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day  - June 19
  • Independence Day  - July 4
  • Labor Day  - 1st Monday in September
  • Indigenous People's Day  - 2nd Monday in October
  • Veterans’ Day  - Nov. 11
  • Thanksgiving Day  - 4th Thursday in November
  • Christmas Day -  Dec. 25

Which mode of travel is more popular for Fourth of July travelers?

AAA projects a record-breaking 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week, seeing 2.8 million travelers more compared to last year. According to AAA partner and rental car company Hertz, cities like Dallas, Los Angeles, Denver, and San Francisco are showing the highest rental car demand.

Meanwhile in Florida, road travel will set a record for the second year in a row with more than 3.9 million Floridians expected to take a road trip. AAA shared that's 183,000 more than last year.

“Road travelers should prepare for congestion in the afternoon and evening hours, particularly near larger metro areas, theme parks and popular attractions,” Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA, said. “With so many people on the road it’s important to be patient, minimize distractions while driving, and move over for people on the roadside.

What will gas prices look like around July 4th for Florida drivers?

AAA reported gas prices recently sank to multi-month lows, but rebounded in the past couple of days.

On Wednesday, June 19, Florida drivers paid an average price of $3.32 per gallon on gasoline. That's more than what holiday travelers paid last Independence Day, when the state average was $3.26 per gallon.

The auto club said it expected prices to remain volatile through the rest of summer travel season.

Is July 4th week busy for airports? AAA says yes

An estimated 5.74 million people will fly to their Independence Day destination, a 7% increase from 2023 and a 12% increase from 2019. With the possibility of congested airports, AAA recommended arriving two hours early for flights and bringing carry-on luggage instead of checked-in bags.

Airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, with the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800.

As for other modes of transportation, AAA predicts nearly five million people are expected to travel by buses, cruises, and train.

When are the best and worst times to travel on Fourth of July Holiday?

For those planning a road trip for Independence Day weekend, transportation data and insights provider  INRIX  offers the best times to get on the road.

They recommended drivers hit the road in the morning, adding that travelers returning on Monday, July 8th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3rd, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

What is Hooters?

The first Hooters opened in Clearwater in 1983, the brainchild of six businessmen and the largest chain in the " brestaurant" genre of restaurants that advertise attractive waitresses in tight shirts and shorts.

"Hooters Girls" wear white tank tops with the "Hootie the Owl" logo and short orange shorts, plus tan pantyhose and reflect what an old version of the employees' handbook ( published by the Smoking Gun ) called "the look of the 'All American Cheerleader, Surfer, Girl Next Door."

Hooters is known for wings, sandwiches, burgers, seafood, and beer, the annual Hooters Girls calendar , the Miss Hooters Pageant , and for sponsoring NASCAR drivers . This year, Hooters is sponsoring Chase Elliott of Hendrick Motorsports. The company also often supports local charities, sponsors marathons and contributes to local services.

It's also famous for multiple lawsuits over discriminatory hiring practices and for going through a long list of owners. Most recently, in 2019, Hooters was sold to Nord Bay Capital and TriArtisan Capital Advisors.

Why did Hooters close locations? Is Hooters going out of business?

Like many other restaurant chains, Hooters took a hit during the pandemic and is suffering from the recent rise in food costs. Some of the biggest changes:

  • Red Lobster closed nearly a hundred locations last month while filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
  • The parent company of Outback Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill, Carrabba's Italian Grill and Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar closed 41 locations earlier this year
  • Tijuana Flats filed for bankruptcy and closed 11 locations in April
  • Burger King announced in May 2023 that the burger chain would be closing up to 400 locations by the end of the year.
  • Appleby's announced plans to close from 25 to 35 locations in 2024.
  • Cracker Barrel's CEO told investors in May that the chain wasn't as "relevant" as it once was and sales were down.

During the pandemic, Hooters pivoted to take-out sales. In 2021, Hooter of America (HOA) Brands CEO Sal Melilli told Business Insider that to-go sales were 30% of their business, up from 20% pre-pandemic, and the company was emphasizing their fast-casual chain Hoots.

Hooters has expanded in other ways. The original founders of the company maintain the rights to five counties in Florida and announced last year that three new Hooters were coming to The Villages in Central Florida, with another three opening in Las Vegas, according to a press release . There has been no word if the recent closings have affected that.

"With new Hooters restaurants opening domestically and internationally, new Hooters frozen products launching at grocery stores, and the Hooters footprint expanding into new markets with both company and franchise locations, this brand of 41 years remains highly resilient and relevant," a Hooters representative told the Palm Beach Post . "We look forward to continuing to serve our guests at home, on the go and at our restaurants here in the U.S. and around the globe."

Is Florida the most patriotic state? Study puts it towards bottom of its ranking

florida travel network

Red, White and … bleh? When it comes to showing off one's patriotism, some are more flashy and proud than others.

Just weeks before the most patriotic day of the year on July 4, WalletHub released its annual ranking of the " Most Patriotic States in America ."

Spoiler alert: Florida is nowhere close to first place; or anywhere in the middle, for that matter.

What makes a state more patriotic than another?

Experts compared the 50 states across two key categories, “Military Engagement” and “Civic Engagement.” The score for those categories were evaluated using 13 relevant metrics and were graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of patriotism.

Here are some of the metrics WalletHub included:

  • Average Military Enlistees
  • Veterans per 1,000 Civilian Adults
  • Share of Adults Who Voted in 2020 Presidential Election
  • AmeriCorps Volunteers per Capita
  • U.S. History/Civics Education Requirement

“The most patriotic states have a lot of residents who serve or have served in the armed forces, high voter turnouts during elections, and a high share of the population volunteering with national or local organizations," Cassandra Happe, WalletHub analyst, said.

"Patriotism also isn’t concentrated in any one particular area – the top states are located in vastly different geographic regions.”

Where does Florida rank for most patriotic states?

So where is Florida's position in the most America-loving states? Residents will have to look towards the bottom of the ranking.

According to WalletHub, Florida is the 46th-most patriotic state, or better know as the the fifth- least patriotic state, in the entire country. The state saw an overall score of roughly 34, with its civic engagement at 49 and military engagement even lower, at 22.

Who beat Florida for the least patriotic state?

Arkansas was dubbed the least patriotic state of all 50, scoring 26 out of 100. It's military engagement score is 29, while its civic engagement score is 50.

Here are the top 10 least patriotic states, according to WalletHub's study:

  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • Connecticut
  • West Virginia

What is the most patriotic state in the country?

Virginia was crowned the most patriotic state, with an overall score of 64.

For every 100,000 civilians in Virginia, there are nearly 1,900 active-duty military personnel, the third-most in the country. And for every 1,000 civilians, there are around 107 veterans, the second-most in the country.

It also saw high civic engagement scores.

"It has a high voter turnout rate, with 71.5% of residents having voted in the 2020 presidential election, compared to the national average of 67%. To top things off, Virginia has the seventh-highest number of peace corps volunteers per capita, and it is one of the many states that require courses in U.S. history or civics for high school graduation," WalletHub's study said.

Here are the top 10 most patriotic states, according to WalletHub's study:

  • New Hampshire

Top 10 Florida Vacation Destinations

florida travel network

Everyone is familiar with Florida's top vacation destination — Disney World. However, the Sunshine State has a lot more to offer than just Mickey and his crew. There are several other destinations that draw millions of visitors to Florida each year. If you're looking for a can't-miss place to go on vacation, you should consider one of these tried-and-true Florida vacation destinations.

Disney World

Disney World

Who can resist the fairy tale? Not many. Disney World is Florida's most popular vacation destination. Why shouldn't it be? Where else can you vacation at a magical and happy place? Where else can you exchange your simple life for a few magical days of castles, princesses and characters taken out of story books and your favorite Disney movies?

Unfortunately, Disney World can easily be the most expensive vacation you'll ever take too, but it doesn't have to be. Disney provides hotel resort accommodations for every budget — including value, moderate and deluxe — as well as a wide range of ticket choices and lots of different food options.

Gina Pricope/Getty Images

There is more to Orlando than just Disney World. Universal Orlando is a popular destination resort with its own hotels and theme parks. Nearby, SeaWorld Orlando anchors the popular International Drive area that plays host to over 100 hotels and 150 spectacular restaurants.

The fun in Orlando doesn't stop there. Plenty of options abound for both the budget minded traveler as well as the discriminating vacationer. Additional resort opportunities, golf, themed, and dinner theater experiences and plenty more attractions are conveniently located within a few miles of the major theme parks.

St. Augustine

Richard Cummins/Getty Images

Whether you're looking for romance or a family destination, you'll find it all in St. Augustine, America's oldest city. Located on Florida's east coast, St. Augustine's Old-World charm, sunny weather , historical monuments, unique attractions, world-class shopping, and beaches just minutes away make it an ideal vacation destination for couples and families alike.

They  Florida Keys are becoming increasingly touristy, drawing five million visitors a year. It may sound like a lot but when you think about the over 50 million that visit Disney each year, it's just a drop in the bucket.

This string of islands bound together by the Overseas Highway have become a diving and sport fishing mecca. Each island has its own ambiance – from Key Largo's suburbia, that serves as a bedroom community to Homestead and Miami, to Key West's Old Town that oozes with peculiar Key West charm that has made the town famous for decades.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a wealth of things to do and see – world-class snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, and camping. Others will enjoy the history and endless entertainment.

Amelia Island

Anne Rippy/Getty Images

Florida's northernmost barrier island, Amelia Island , boasts 18 square miles of rich history and incredible natural beauty. Whether you're looking for an all-inclusive resort or a quaint oceanfront cottage, a sea-side villa or an ocean-view hotel... you'll find all that and more — dining, shopping, golf, and tennis — on Amelia Island.

Although the all-inclusive resorts in the area can be a bit pricey, there are alternative accommodations for the budget-minded traveler — from camping at area state parks to affordable hotels. While this may mean you might not enjoy oceanfront views, there is plenty of public beach access for a sand-sational vacation.

While the mention of Miami may conjure up visions of a tropical paradise — beaches, palm trees, and ocean surf — it is also one of the world's centers of commerce, fashion, and entertainment. Greater Miami offers visitors the cutting edge of urban-modern chic. Miami has evolved into an international destination for celebrities, artists, and aristocrats, and the world's most famous fun-in-the-sun playground . Visitors are lured to the area year-round with perfect weather, award-winning beaches and a celebrity-driven, sizzling nightlife scene that grooves to an only-in-Miami beat.

Daytona Beach

Paul Giamou/Getty Images

Twenty-three miles of sparkling white sandy beaches and beautiful blue-green waters make Daytona Beach an irresistible playground for kids of all ages. This popular family vacation spot pretty much makes child's play out of having fun.

If you and your family can manage to tear yourselves away from the beach, you'll discover the Daytona Beach area is full of fun activities and attractions.

Panama City Beach

Panama City Beach CVB

The hub of what's often called the Redneck Riviera, Panama City Beach is not just a spring break hot spot, but a top beach destination for families. Panama City Beach has over 27 miles of beach, emerald green waters, and sugary white sands along the Gulf of Mexico.

Panama City is also filled with lots of ecotourism adventures like tours of Camp Helen State Park, Gayle's Trails greenways, and the pristine Shell Island. Don't be turned away by the city's party-life reputation, this is a great family place as well.

Fort Myers/Sanibel Island

Danita Delimont/Getty Images

Fort Myers and Sanibel Island offer visitors some of the most pristine beaches in the country. If you're looking for a getaway where the only thing on your agenda is relaxing, this is a great place to visit. Most of the accommodations on Sanibel and its sister island, Captiva, are small and located directly on the water.

The area is also known for its  great shelling , but also holds a few surprises — the J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge and some unique shopping and dining experiences among them.

Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater

GPR Photography/Getty Images

This tri-city area, better known as Tampa Bay , is a favorite among those that prefer the white sand and gentle surf of the Gulf of Mexico. While Clearwater Beach is seemingly in transition — losing many of its quaint mom-and-pop motels to the queen-like condo towers — it still boasts one of the best beaches in the area.

St. Petersburg not only offers a great beach but a downtown waterfront wonderland featuring The Pier.

While Tampa can't brag about its beaches, it has a busy cruise port and attractions like Busch Gardens and The Florida Aquarium, as well as Raymond James Stadium, home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

florida travel network

Have you taken off for your summer vacation yet? While we tend to be a tourist destination ourselves , Floridians love getting out into the rest of the country and the world.

But travel can be a hassle, with disruptions from weather, delays, cancellations, overbooking and lost or damaged luggage.   AirHelp , a claims management company focused on airline passenger rights, released a report that examined all of those to rank the airports with the fewest disruptions in May 2024.

There were no Florida airports on the top 10 "fewest disruptions" list for that month. On AirHelp's list of top 10 airports with the most disruptions in May, three of them were in Florida.

The airport with the most disruptions was Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which AirHelp said saw 45.6% of its flights disrupted last month.

After rough week, Mariners continue road trip vs. Rays

The Seattle Mariners will continue their trek through Florida when they travel up the state's Gulf Coast to open a three-game series Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Share Video

The American League West-leading Mariners will look to bounce back after a rough stretch last week when they take on the Rays, who have climbed to fourth in the AL East.

Seattle, which sits 10 games over .500, is just 2-4 on its current nine-game road swing through Cleveland, Miami and St. Petersburg.

The Rays have gotten the better of the West Coast team, winning the past three meetings, Sept. 8-10 last season, as part of a four-game home series.

The Rays are also 10-5 across the 15 previous meetings between the clubs.

The Mariners have received some strong pitching performances this season, and Logan Gilbert has been a centerpiece of the staff over his past three starts.

On Saturday, the right-hander crafted his second consecutive start of at least eight scoreless innings and was perturbed when Seattle manager Scott Servais told him that he was being removed in the 9-0 blowout win in Miami against the Marlins.

Tensions elevated somewhat when Gilbert -- sitting on 92 pitches -- lobbied to remain in for the shutout, but Servais was not upset by the reaction and said it is a competitive quality his players possess.

"I put my hand out to shake his hand, and then he wouldn't shake my hand," Servais said. "And I love it about Logan -- all of our guys, really. They want it. It's hard to get complete games in this league. And quite frankly, if the game would've been closer, I'd have been more inclined to let him go. But we've got so many big games ahead of us."

On Sunday, the Mariners gave up four runs to Miami in the first, trailed 6-0 after three innings and weren't able to rebound in a 6-4 loss.

Right-hander Bryan Woo (3-1, 1.67 ERA) will make his first career appearance against the Rays in his eighth start this year.

In facing Pittsburgh Pirates phenom Paul Skenes for the first time Sunday, the Rays got a leadoff homer from Yandy Diaz and broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth on Randy Arozarena's sacrifice fly. Tampa Bay won 3-1, taking two of three in Pittsburgh.

The Rays went 5-4 on their nine-game road trip to Atlanta, Minnesota and Pittsburgh.

Diaz, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games, stroked a homer off Skenes on the game's first pitch, with the 347-foot shot striking the right field foul pole.

"I was looking for a fastball right down the middle and that's exactly what he threw me and I was able to hit it out," said Diaz, who had three hits and is batting .366 during his streak.

Tampa Bay limited the Pirates to just three hits, with relievers Garrett Cleavinger, winning pitcher Kevin Kelly (2-0), Jason Adam and Pete Fairbanks (11th save) holding the Pirates hitless over four frames after Aaron Civale's five-inning, one-run start.

Right-hander Taj Bradley (2-4, 4.06), who will make his ninth start Monday, holds no record and an 8.38 ERA against the Mariners in two career starts.
