Edmonton’s newest fire station also marks a net-zero milestone, city boasts

A new $18 million fire station in the Windermere area of Edmonton – featuring 382 solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling – was unveiled on Friday.

“It’s crazy exciting! We’re thrilled for the opportunity to live and operate out of the city’s first net-zero building and it’s getting close!” Deputy Fire Chief Tiffany Edgecombe said.

“Net zero” means the station is designed to produce as much energy as it uses.

Along with the solar panels, it’s hooked up to a geo-thermal field buried deep beneath the parking lot, roughly 75 metres down.

From the insulation, to the way the doors open, every part of the building works to make the most of that energy.

“The reason why we have the insulation in the floor is to actually insure that the heat doesn’t drop into the ground and dissipate out,” explained Jesse Banford with the City of Edmonton.

There are fewer and thicker windows and the firetruck doors open like a closet, not a garage, to help keep heat in.

fire station tour edmonton

The extra technology added a few million dollars to the price tag, but it’s money the city expects to eventually recoup through energy savings.

“We’ll be watching how the systems are performing, and we’ll be establishing baselines, and then determining from there when we’ll get our return on investment,” said Shannon Fitzsimmons, also with the city.

While the station has a unique design and futuristic features, its main purpose is to fill a community need.

“When the station opens, it’ll definitely decrease our response times in this area. We know that right now we are not serving this area in our standard response times,” Edgecombe said.

Fire Station No. 31 is located at 3865 Allan Dr. S.W. At least eight firefighters will work out of the station when it opens in the summer.

Department news Headlines News Equipment Edmonton opens new fire station and net-zero energy facility

August 26, 2023  By FFIC Staff

Aug. 26, 2023, Edmonton – The City of Edmonton has opened its 31st fire station and the city’s first net-zero energy building.

The total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is expected to be equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site, the city said in a press release.

The Windermere Fire Station features a rooftop solar installation, a geothermal heating and cooling system, and other climate-resilient design features.

Energy generation and reduction features of the building include solar array with 382 modules at 375W each, total rated solar capacity of 143 kW, geothermal field of 35 boreholes at 70m in depth, exterior wall insulation of R-35, roof insulation of R-50, underslab insulation of R-20, double-glazed Low-E windows, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, and six side-folding bay doors.

“This station has been a significant project for Edmonton Fire as we continue to meet the service needs of Edmontonians and our growing city,” said Edmonton Fire Chief Joe Zatylny. “In the coming years, Edmonton will be home to two million people, and this station will play an important role in ensuring the safety of both our growing city and our firefighters.”

The building design received the Canadian Architect 2018 Award of Excellence. The budget for planning, design and construction of this project was $21.5 million.

The fire station has been operational and serving the city’s southwest since July 7.

Edmonton’s first net-zero energy fire station is set to open in Windermere next summer at a cost of roughly $18 million.

The city on Friday offered a sneak peek of Windermere Fire Station No. 31, 3865 Allan Dr. S.W., also touting the project as the city’s first net-zero energy building, meaning over the course of a year it will generate the same amount of energy that it uses.

The building’s black brick facade draws the eye up toward its pitched roof. On the south slope of the roof, 382 solar panels at 375 watts each will capture the sun’s energy for a total rated solar capacity of 143 kilowatts.

Tiffany Edgecombe, deputy fire chief of training and logistics with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, said they are excited to soon live and operate out of the building.

“We know right now that this area is currently being served by the Terwillegar and Heritage Valley stations,” she said. “With this station opening soon, it will allow us to increase our service levels.”

The three-bay station will be able to house three trucks with eight to 12 crew members living out of the station. Unique to the facility are six side-folding bay doors instead of overhead garage doors that are typically used.

Devin Richards, project manager with facility infrastructure delivery for the City of Edmonton, said the folding doors help maintain insulation and take about half the time to open and close. They also are safer, so crews are better able to see when the door is fully open.

The building also utilizes geothermal energy from a field of 35 boreholes with a depth of 75 metres. This helps heat the building in the winter and keeps it cool in the summer.

The exterior walls have an R-value of 35, which measures the resistance of heat transfer. The higher the number, the more efficient the building is. In comparison, a typical house wall has a value of R-20. The roof insulation is R-50, while the underslab insulation has a value of R-20.

Shannon Fitzsimmons, director of facility planning and design in the integrated infrastructure services department at the City of Edmonton, said it’s exciting to have the first net-zero building.

“We’re very experienced in designing and building fire stations, we work closely with our partners, we understand the operational needs of a building like this,” she said.

“To integrate the challenges and opportunities of a net zero building with that operation, it’s been a really successful project for us. And we’re excited to see it in operation and see the advantages that we gain from operating and living in a net zero building.”

Sen. Collins tours new fire station in Newburgh

NEWBURGH, Maine (WABI) - Senator Susan Collins was in Newburgh Monday to tour the new fire station.

“This looks great! It really does. It’s beautiful.”

The fire department in Newburgh still has that new-station smell after opening in its new location on Western Avenue less than a year ago.

Its construction was made possible in part by $1,000,000 in congressionally directed spending Senator Susan Collins secured through her work as Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee.

“The town put in $500,000, which was a substantial amount for a town of this size to contribute, and I was able to secure an addition $1 million that allowed the project to go forward,” said Collins.

“That was amazing. That was just a surprise, to be honest with you, that a small town like us ended up getting approved for it,” says Brent Somers, Newburgh Fire Chief.

Fire fighters say their old station was a health hazard with black mold and cramped quarters, among other issues.

“It was leaking water. As we always joked, it rained harder inside than it did outside.”

Since this building opened in August of 2023, Newburgh’s fire chief says they’ve added seven more people to their roster.

“From the beginning, when the word got out it was official that we were getting a new building, you could see a turn in all the firemen’s attitudes toward the excitement of having a brand-new station. For sure, once we moved in, the guys are just - now they can’t wait to get here.”

Collins says it was a tough fight to secure the money, but visiting with the crew Monday made that fight worthwhile.

“What I love about days like this is it makes my work very concrete. It shows me the real results that fighting for that money produces back home in communities like this.”
