Experience the Magic of Puerto Rico’s Bioluminescent Bays

There are only five bioluminescent bays in the world and Puerto Rico is home to three of them! Located in Fajardo, Vieques, and Lajas, Puerto Rico’s bio bays are the most incredible destinations on the island. You just can’t miss an opportunity to kayak at night and watch the water twinkle and glow in shades of white, blue, and green. Described as a smattering of pixie dust, or tiny lights floating in the water, bioluminescence is a phenomenon you have to see in person to truly understand – photos just don’t do it justice!

So what makes the water in Puerto Rico’s bio bays sparkle and glow? The bays are populated by millions of microorganisms called dinoflagellates who make their food by photosynthesis, a process that creates a glowing effect in the dark. All it takes is the stroke of a paddle, the wake of a boat, or even your hand to set the water aglow. Bioluminescence is a somewhat fragile phenomenon. Pollution, excess wind, and the full moon can impact the light concentration in the bays, which is why it’s important to time your visit accordingly. No matter which of the three bays you choose, you won’t forget your night kayak adventure.

Explore The Bio Bay in Laguna Grande!

For the brightest bio bay experience on the main island make sure to visit Laguna Grande in Fajardo. Fajardo is only 45 minutes away from the San Juan metro area making it a great option for a quick day trip from your city vacation. All tours will take you through the lagoon where you can experience the glowing water and mangroves on a 2 hour kayak adventure. Enjoy the trip with a small group and expert local guide. You can also opt to turn your trip to Fajardo into a full day adventure, with a variety of combo tours that will take you beyond the Bio Bay and through the tropical El Yunque Rainforest.

All tour operators bring something unique to your tour and know how to deliver a safe, fun, and informative experience to their guests. Discover the best option for you and your group to make sure you guarantee yourself a spot on a bio bay tour while in Puerto Rico. Plan your tour in advance as trips do tend to fill up quickly.

Photography & Video

Be careful with your camera.

Bioluminescence is almost impossible to capture with regular cameras. Plus, everything in your kayak will get wet. We strongly recommend you be careful with your camera.

If you still want to bring a camera, make sure that it is waterproof. We also recommend that you use a leash to attach it to your life vest. Do not expose expensive and SRL cameras to futile risks. The place will be completely dark. Diving in the lagoon is prohibited. If anything falls in the water, it will be impossible to recover.

Choosing the Ideal Method for Bio Bay Exploration

Factors to consider.

The Impact of Lunar Cycles on Bio Bay Tours

Influence on bioluminescence visibility.

The moon plays a crucial role in the visibility of bioluminescence during bio bay tours. During the new moon phase, when the moon is not visible from Earth, it’s darker at night, allowing for better viewing of the glowing microorganisms in the water. Conversely, during a full moon, its brightness can overpower the bioluminescence, making it less visible to tour participants. This means that planning bio bay tours around specific lunar phases can significantly impact visitors’ experiences.

Understanding this relationship between lunar cycles and bioluminescence visibility is essential for both tour operators and tourists. It allows them to maximize their chances of witnessing the captivating natural phenomenon at its best. For instance, if tourists are keen on experiencing vibrant glows emitted by bioluminescent organisms in Puerto Rico’s bays, they should consider booking their tours during periods when there’s minimal or no moonlight.

Significance for Optimal Bio Bay Experiences

Considering moon phases when planning bio bay tours can lead to more fulfilling and memorable experiences for participants. Tourists who time their visits with new moon phases have higher chances of encountering intense displays of bioluminescence due to reduced ambient light interference from the moon. On such occasions, kayaking or boating through these bays under a starry sky enhances the surreal effect created by these glowing microorganisms.

Conversely, visiting during full moons may lead to subdued views as ambient light hampers optimal visibility of bioluminescent activity in the water. Therefore, understanding how lunar cycles influence these natural occurrences empowers tourists to make informed decisions about when to embark on bio bay excursions for an enhanced experience.

Preserving the Bioluminescence of Puerto Rico

Conservation efforts.

The bioluminescent bay tours in Puerto Rico are a wondrous experience, but the delicate ecosystem of the bio bays requires protection and conservation. Efforts to safeguard these natural wonders involve strict regulations on tour operators, limiting the number of visitors per night, and implementing eco-friendly practices. These measures aim to minimize disturbances to the bioluminescent organisms while still allowing people to appreciate their beauty.

Preserving the bioluminescence is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance within the bio bays. The microorganisms responsible for this stunning natural phenomenon are sensitive to environmental changes, making them vulnerable to human impact. By regulating access and promoting sustainable tourism practices, authorities can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to witness this breathtaking display of nature.

Sustainable Tourism Practices

Sustainable tourism practices play a pivotal role in safeguarding Puerto Rico’s bio bays. Tour operators have adopted eco-friendly approaches such as using electric boats instead of motorized ones, incorporating educational components into tours to raise awareness about conservation, and adhering to designated routes within the bio bays. These initiatives not only minimize negative impacts on marine life but also educate visitors about their responsibility in preserving these unique ecosystems.

Supporting initiatives that contribute to preserving Puerto Rico’s natural wonders is essential for ensuring their longevity. Collaborations between local communities, government bodies, and environmental organizations are instrumental in developing comprehensive conservation strategies for the bio bays. Furthermore, encouraging tourists to choose responsible tour operators who prioritize sustainability fosters a culture of environmental consciousness among visitors.

Tips for a Magical Bio Bay Adventure

Preparation.

When planning the best bio bay tours Puerto Rico , it’s crucial to prepare adequately. Start by researching the different tour companies and choose one with knowledgeable guides. Ensure you make reservations in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to secure your spot on the tour. Consider checking the weather forecast before booking to ensure optimal conditions for witnessing the bioluminescent waters.

Before embarking on your adventure, pack essentials such as insect repellent and comfortable clothing suitable for water activities. It’s also wise to bring along some cash for any additional expenses or tips for your guides. Remember that preserving the delicate ecosystem of the bio bay is essential, so be mindful of what you bring with you and avoid littering.

On-site Experience

Once you’re at the bio bay, make sure to follow all guidelines set forth by your tour guide regarding swimming restrictions and how to interact with this unique environment respectfully. When entering the water, try not to disturb or agitate it too much; gentle movements will help maximize visibility of the bioluminescence.

During your excursion, take a moment to fully immerse yourself in this natural wonder – observe how every movement in the water sets off a breathtaking display of light. Capture these moments through photography if allowed by your tour operator but remember that some experiences are best enjoyed without screens or distractions.

After experiencing Puerto Rico’s glowing waters firsthand, take time to reflect on this magical encounter and consider ways in which you can contribute positively towards preserving its beauty for future generations.

The Significance of Bioluminescent Bay’s Microorganisms

Unique microorganisms.

Bioluminescent Bays in Puerto Rico are home to some of the most unique microorganisms on the planet. These tiny organisms, known as dinoflagellates, are responsible for the bay’s mesmerizing bioluminescence. When these microorganisms are disturbed, they emit a bright blue-green light, creating an otherworldly glow in the water. Imagine being surrounded by millions of tiny glowing specks as you paddle through the bay at night.

The ecological role and impact of these microorganisms go beyond just creating a beautiful spectacle for visitors. These dinoflagellates play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of Bioluminescent ecosystem. They serve as food for various marine creatures, forming an essential part of the food chain in this unique environment.

Scientific Marvel

The scientific marvel behind Bio Bay’s shimmering waters lies in understanding how these microorganisms produce light through a process called bioluminescence. Inside each dinoflagellate cell are tiny structures called scintillons that contain luciferin and luciferase enzymes which react with oxygen to produce light when agitated.

This natural phenomenon has captivated scientists and researchers for years, leading to extensive studies aimed at unraveling the secrets behind this breathtaking display of bioluminescence. Understanding how these microorganisms create light not only sheds light on their ecological significance but also opens up possibilities for applications in various fields such as medicine and environmental conservation.

Environmental Considerations for Sustainable Tourism

Balancing conservation and tourism.

Bio bays, like Mosquito Bay in Puerto Rico, are delicate ecosystems that require careful management to ensure their long-term survival. Balancing the desire to share these natural wonders with visitors while preserving their ecological integrity is crucial. One of the primary challenges is finding ways to limit the impact of tourism activities on the bio bay’s fragile ecosystem.

Visitors can contribute to this balance by choosing tour operators that prioritize environmental conservation. Look for tours that use electric boats instead of traditional motorized ones, as this helps reduce pollution in the water caused by fuel emissions. Some tour companies enforce strict guidelines on visitor behavior during tours, such as prohibiting swimming or using chemical-based sunscreens that can harm the bioluminescent organisms.

It’s essential for tourists to be mindful of how their actions can affect bio bays and make conscious choices when selecting tour providers who align with sustainable practices.

Promoting Responsible Behavior

Responsible tourism involves more than just choosing an eco-friendly tour operator; it also requires visitors to engage in environmentally conscious behaviors during their visit. For example, minimizing physical contact with the water prevents unnecessary disturbance to the microorganisms living in bio bays. Furthermore, using biodegradable or reef-safe sunscreen products helps prevent harmful chemicals from entering and potentially disrupting these sensitive ecosystems.

Tour guides play a vital role in promoting responsible behavior among visitors by providing educational information about bio bay ecology and emphasizing the importance of respecting nature during tours. By fostering a greater understanding of how human activities can impact these unique environments, tourists are more likely to adopt eco-friendly practices both during and after their visits.

Congratulations on making it this far! You’ve learned about the enchanting bio bay tours in Puerto Rico, from the best ways to experience the glowing waters to the importance of preserving this natural wonder. Whether you’re leaning towards a thrilling kayak adventure or a relaxing boat tour, you now have the tools to make an informed choice for your bio bay exploration. Remember, the impact of lunar cycles and environmental considerations are crucial factors to bear in mind as you plan your trip. At the prescribed time, meet for your Bio Bay Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour on the beach of Las Croabas, a small fishing village located on the extreme northeastern tip of Puerto Rico.

Your Eco Adventures guides call the group of kayakers together for a briefing session covering basic kayak handling, rules of the road, and the importance of keeping to a minimum any disturbance of the pristine environment of the bioluminescent lagoon.

Then we launch our kayaks and head for a hidden opening in the mangroves at the northern end of the beach. Upon entering the mangroves, we follow a channel for a mile that leads to the Laguna Grande.

Leaving the channel and entering the lagoon by itself is a breathtaking experience! A wide expanse of gentle, rippling water surrounded by mangrove forests greets the adventurer, the mountains of the El Yunque Rainforest tower in the distance – profound tranquility envelopes all who enter!

But the best is yet to come! Your guides call the flotilla together for an informative talk about several topics: This unique ecosystem, the flora, fauna, and sea life that inhabits the lagoon, and historical notes of interest.

6 Best Bioluminescence Tours In La Parguera Bio Bay, Puerto Rico (2024)

  • Bioluminescent Bays
  • La Parguera Bio Bay

Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays.

La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay is the only one you are allowed to swim in.

I first visited this bio bay when I was a child, and I have taken these tours at least a dozen times since.

Below are the 6 best tours in La Parguera:

1. Glass bottom catamaran tour

As the name says, this is a catamaran with a glass bottom.

image of the glass bottom boat

On this tour, you don’t get to swim in the bioluminescent bay.

When you arrive at the bioluminescent bay, the captain briefly explains the bio bay. Then, t hey collect a bucket of water, and you can agitate the water with your hands to activate the bioluminescent organisms.

After that, they send some crew members to swim under the catamaran. As the crew members agitate their arms and legs, you can see how the water starts to illuminate through the glass bottom.

This tour is excellent and inexpensive, perfect for the elderly and younger family members.

You can book this tour with the Fondo de Cristal Tour .

2. Bio bay swimming tour

La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay is the only bio bay in Puerto Rico where you are allowed to swim.

image of 2 girls swimming in La Parguera Bioluminescence Bay

Some tours allow you to get in the water and activate the bioluminescence yourself by moving in the water.

The tour operator will take you on a boat to La Parguera’s Bioluminescent Bay.

You will get a brief explanation of what makes the water glow, and then you will swim in the bio bay, spending about an hour in the water.

This tour is physically demanding, but if you can swim, I highly recommend it.

To book a swimming tour in the bay, visit Parguera Eco Tours.

3. Snorkeling and bioluminescent bay tour

They call this tour the best of both worlds.

image of a guy snorkeling at bio bay

At 4:00 PM, they take you to snorkel some of the best shallow reefs in Parguera. A PADI professional will accompany you on the trip to ensure your safety.

At 6:00, they will serve you Puerto Rican empanadas and your choice of soda or local beer.  After you have eaten, they will take you on a boat to the bioluminescent bay.

At the bio bay , they will provide you with a mask and a snorkel.

This tour lasts half an hour and allows you to experience bioluminescence with an underwater view.

You can book this tour with Paradise Scuba Snorkeling PR .

4. Nightime bio bay kayak tour

If you like kayaking, this is the tour for you.

image of 2 people kayaking at night in Bio Bay

On this tour, they take you to the bioluminescent area on one of the company’s vessels, towing the kayaks with their boat.

The tour operators will provide you with a life vest, a glow stick, and a sound device.

You will be allowed to go in the water and swim in the bioluminescent bay . These tours take two hours from start to finish.

Large families or groups should call in advance for scheduling purposes.

To book this tour, go to the Parguera Water Sports website.

5. Private bioluminescence tour

Do you want to experience La Parguera’s bio bay more intimately?

In that case, this tour is the right one for you.

image of a 19-foot boat used for Private Bioluminescence Tour

This tour has a six-passenger maximum. The tour operator will take you to bio bay in a 19-foot boat. You are allowed to swim so you can experience it firsthand.

Tours use a skiff which is a shallow, flat-bottomed open boat with a sharp bow and square stern.

The US Coast Guard regulates all marine vessels, and they have the following regulations:

The maximum weight the boat can carry is 1,400 pounds. The ladder to get in and out of the boat might not hold more than 250 lbs.

For more information about booking this more intimate tour, contact Alelí Tours .

6. La Parguera bio bay tour from San Juan

Do you want to go to the bio bay from San Juan but don’t want to drive 5 hours round trip?

Then a tour from San Juan to La Parguera is suitable for you.

image a group of people swimming in La Parguera Bio Bay

These tours take care of everything. They will pick you up at your hotel and drive you to La Parguera . Once you arrive, you will get appetizers.

You will then board a private boat that will take you to see the floating homes and the mangrove keys at La Parguera.

After sunset, they will take you to the bio bay.

You will get bottles of water and local beers on the boat. On the bioluminescent bay, you will be allowed to swim, and as you agitate the water, it will start to glow.

After you have experienced the bio bay, they will take you back to your hotel in San Juan.

13 Things I Wish I Knew Before Taking the Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay Tour in Puerto Rico

I sat silently in my kayak, one hand swirling the water outside the boat. With each gentle swish, a miniature constellation of underwater “stars” twinkled around my fingers. In the kayak beside me, a woman spun her paddle in the water and gasped at the tiny explosion of light. Ahead of me, the comet-like streak of green in the water indicated a fish swimming near the surface. That’s the magic of Bio Bay tours.

I’d come to Isla de Vieques, off Puerto Rico’s main island on a kayaktrip in its world-famous bioluminescent bay. The experience was everything I’d hoped for — a stroke of luck, given how poorly I’d arranged my trip. Getting the most out of a bio bay tour requires a lot of advance planning, and, in the case of Vieques, more cash than you might expect.

Here’s what I wish I knew before making the trip.

13 Things I Wish Somebody Told Me Before Taking the Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay Tour in Puerto Rico

1. bioluminescence is surprisingly common.

Much like fireflies do on land, single-celled, water surface–dwelling organisms called dinoflagellates, a type of plankton, can emit light underwater. They aren’t the only marine organisms that glow. Some 1,500 species of fish are known to luminesce, as well as certain types of squid, jellyfish, worms, and crustaceans. Many use bioluminescence as lures for food or mates, or to confuse predators.

Although dinoflagellates are microscopic, they often form large colonies. The human eye doesn’t detect the bioluminescence when a water body is still. But when disturbed, such as by wind that ripples the surface or the slicing of a boat hull through the water, our eyes translate the light wavelengths into glow-in-the-dark sparkles and zigzags of green or blue-green.

couple kayaking in a bio bay in Puerto Rico at night

2. Puerto Rico Has Three Bioluminescent Bays

The planet currently has five ecosystems where dinoflagellate concentrations are high enough to consistently cause this bioluminescent phenomenon. Puerto Rico claims three of them where Bio Bay tours are organized.

In Fajardo, along the east coast of the main island , Laguna Grande is the most trafficked of the trio. It’s not as bright as the others, but at only an hour by car from San Juan , it’s the easiest to get to. This also makes it the most touristy of the bunch.

A few of the better-known Laguna Grande tour operators include:

  • Eco Adventures
  • Kayaking Puerto Rico
  • Yokahú Kayak Trips
  • Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours

In Lajas, on the opposite corner of the main island, La Parguera is the least visited of the three bays. At about 2.5 hours from San Juan, it’s a much longer drive than Laguna Grande, but a worthwhile stop if you’re visiting the western side of Puerto Rico.

Some Bio Bay tours allow swimming in La Parguera. Because chemicals in bug repellents, sunscreens, and body lotions can kill the phytoplankton, you’ll need to shower before joining a tour that includes swimming or diving through the bio bay.

Try one of these La Parguera tour operators:

  • Parguera Eco Tours
  • Bio Bay Tours
  • Kayaking Parguera
  • Alelí Tours

The granddaddy of all bioluminescent bays, and the brightest in the world, is Mosquito Bay in Vieques. Although Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017, Mosquito Bay’s dinoflagellate population has, miraculously, doubled since then. On a dark night, you’re almost guaranteed to see something spectacular.

Tour operators on Vieques include:

  • Abe’s Snorkeling
  • Black Beard Sports
  • Vieques Kayaks Bio Bay
  • Jak Water Sports

3. Booking A Tour Can Lead To Unexpected Expenses

You can rent a car and drive to Laguna Grande or La Parguera. Mosquito Bay isn’t connected to the main island, so you’ll need to take a ferry (about $40 per person) or small plane (about $120 per person) from Ceiba, or fly directly from San Juan (about $130 per person), to get there. Depending on the time of year, ferry and flight service may or may not be available after 7 p.m. Residents of Laguna Grande are given preference on the ferry, which means you could get bumped from an especially full voyage.

In addition, many bio bay kayaking tour operators require an address where you’ll be staying on the island in order to complete booking. Since cars aren’t allowed on the ferry to Vieques, you must rent a car or line up a taxi ride once on the island.

The short story: It’s best to plan an overnight stay on the island.

Between our flights, taxi, accommodations in the least expensive Airbnb we could find, and the tour itself, my husband and I spent about $450 on this portion of our kayak trip. Allow for more costs if you plan a day trip to El Yunque National Forest – the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.

We chose Abe’s Snorkeling for our excursion. The sea life kayaking experience was very good overall, although the tour operator, like an airline, oversold their 7 p.m. tour. About a dozen of us were bumped, with no notice, to the 9 p.m. slot. For our trouble, our guide offered each pairing of people a refund on one ticket.

4. Almost Anyone Can Do It

Bio bay kayaking is appropriate for most levels of ability. The water is usually calm, and paddling is done at a laid-back pace, mostly in two-person boats. Because you’re kayaking in the dark, it’s important to follow your tour guide and his instructions and stick close to your tour group. This could be tricky for travelers with vision or hearing impairments. If you’ve got grandkids in tow, ask about age restrictions.

5. Know Your Moon Cycles, And Book In Advance

You might be able to book a tour on the fly, but I wouldn’t risk it. Most fill up several months in advance, especially during the high season.

Although Puerto Rico’s bays luminesce year round, you’ll have the best experience on a dark night. Kayaking during a new moon is preferable because the glow percentage is usually higher. Using a moon phases calendar will help you chart out the best time to go.

Most operators don’t even run tours 3 days before or after a full moon. We didn’t realize this when we booked our Puerto Rican vacation. Fortunately, the final night was just beyond the full-moon window.

The day before or the morning of your excursion, call your tour operator to check on the bay’s brightness; it should be a minimum of 30 percent. In addition to the moon, tides and water temperature affect how much color you see.

6. Ask About Clear-Bottomed Boats

Some tour companies offer clear-bottomed boats, which allow for a unique look at the bioluminescence directly underneath you. This isn’t the default option, so be sure to ask if it’s important to you.

7. Dress To Get Wet

Wear comfortable clothing, such as shorts and a T-shirt, preferably made of tech or quick-drying fabrics; some splashing is normal during any kayaking outing. Pants and shorts with zipper pockets are useful for storing a credit card, in case you want to stop at a restaurant or bar on the way back to your hotel or Airbnb (no need to take a full wallet or cash). Sturdy walking sandals, knit sneakers, or aqua shoes are all good choices for footwear.

Don’t count on being able to stash extra clothing or shoes with the tour operator; take only what you need.

8. Skip The Sunscreens And Skin Lotions

Wash your hands and feet before the trip, and don’t apply any moisturizer, serums, or lotions. You’ll be allowed to dip toes and fingers in the water, but chemicals from common skin products can kill the dinoflagellates.

9. It’s Okay To Take Your Phone

Your bio bay tour guide will tell you to leave your cell phone behind, ostensibly because its camera won’t be able to capture the glow. This may be true, or it may be an effort to reduce the sharing of images, which might, in turn, lead to a reduction in tour purchases. I regretted listening to this advice. I think I could have used my cell phone camera in manual mode and gotten sufficiently long exposures to get quality and free photos of some of the luminescence.

Bottom line: There’s no harm in taking your phone, as long as you seal it in a floating dry bag, and wear it on a lanyard around your neck. Just be aware that if you accidentally overturn your kayak, you might have trouble retrieving the phone in the dark. And don’t spend all your time taking pictures. The best part of the experience is staying in the moment and enjoying the display.

10. Be Prepared For A Wild Ride

The drive out to the bio bay is a bit like riding a roller coaster without a seat belt. Our bus driver clearly had been making this drive for years, and he knew every pothole and curve in the road — and took most of them at a robust clip. In the dark. I had to pry my fingers out of the seat upholstery after he swerved through small herds of the island’s free-roaming horses. Fortunately, he didn’t hit any.

Pro Tip: About those Viequense horses: They’re not wild, even if tourism brochures and resorts market them as such. All are owned by residents and are set free to browse the island’s grasses when not being used as transportation. Sadly, these beautiful animals are frequently killed in road accidents. If you rent a car, drive slowly and cautiously.

11. Keep Your Expectations In Check

Nature is fickle, and an evening of 100 percent glow might be followed by one of less than 30 percent. To make matters worse, all promotional images of Bio Bay tours are Photoshopped. While it is a breathtaking sight, you will not be engulfed in a happy blue halo, nor will the water light up on its own. What you’ll see is more akin to an underwater shower of glitter every time you or your tour mates dip an oar or hand into the bay.

12. Bio Bay Tour Without Kayaks

Is there another means of transportation to get to the bay? Yes, there is now an eco-friendly way to visit Laguna Grande without having to kayak. Bio Island is a company that offers an electric motorboat tour that is both fun and safe for the environment.

They use a really quiet electric motor approved by the DRNA. A low-emission gas motor is used until the boat gets into the channel and then they switch to electric. Being a small Carolina Skiff, the boat has a very low profile, not much deeper than the kayak bottoms.

13. Bio Bay Is Virtually Impossible to Photograph

This is because the illumination is not originating from the water itself, but rather the dinoflagellates in the water. The images that you see online are captured using long exposure techniques, and don’t look anything like the real thing.

However, the elusive nature of capturing the Bio Bay on film doesn’t mean that it is at all subtle. If you go out when the bay is particularly active you’ll never experience anything so stunningly surreal and beautiful. You should only hope that someday you’ll be lucky enough to see it again.

Is Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip Worth The Extra Trouble And Expense?

That’s a big yes. Although I can’t speak for Laguna Grande or La Parguera, kayaking Mosquito Bay was as close to magical as an outdoor experience can get. The bay is wide open and hushed, and even with other groups of kayakers out on the water, it felt like we were the only ones. Paddling was relaxed over the hour and a half we spent out on the water. Even the inexperienced kayakers had a great time.

Because I’d read up in advance and scaled my expectations, I wasn’t disappointed. The bioluminescent glow was actually more pronounced than I figured it would be, with miniature fireworks going off each time a boat pushed through the water. It wasn’t the neon blue radiance shown on tour websites, but it still felt otherworldly, like holding a galaxy of tiny stars in my palms. Aside of Puerto Rico, you can also see bioluminescent water on the Southern California coas t.

When Is the Best Time for a Kayak Trip in Bio Bay in Puerto Rico?

Generally, the best time for a kayak trip is around the new moon when there is less moonlight in the sky to interfere with the glow. Many factors affect how visible the bioluminescence is on any given night, including cloud cover which may help to block the moon and its light.

Why Is the Bio Bay Closed for Three Days Each Month During the Full Moon?

The Department of Natural Resources in Puerto Rico does not allow any tours during those days every month so that Bio Bay can get some  “rest” from human interaction.

Can I Go to See the Bio Bay in Puerto Rico on My Own?

No. Bio Bay is only open to tour companies with DRNA permits, not individuals. It is safest to go with a reputable and insured tour company with a tour guide who will explain the biology of the fragile ecosystem there for you.

Can Small Children Go On Bio Bay Tours in Puerto Rico?

Yes, tour companies take infants and young children on their Bio Bay tours. Infant and child life vests are available and the kids will be seated in a parent’s lap in the kayak. Inexperienced kayakers are advised not to kayak with kids.

What Should I Bring for My Bio Bay, Puerto Rico Tour?

You should bring a towel, natural DEET-free bug spray, and some kind of water shoes. For our day tours, you should also bring sunscreen and protective clothing like rash guards and hats if you like.

Bioluminescent Bay Fajardo with the Glass Bottom Tour adventure group Now I can put a check mark on something which claims to be only in 5 locations in the entire world, Puerto Rico boasting of 3 of them- the bioluminescent bay Point 1- and most important point: You should have at least a little bit of kayaking experience, good enough to know steering, its not a mandate no, but if u don't then U will definitely fall way behind the others. Point 2- You Will get wet. Wear clothes you are ok to wet. Don't carry anything important on you which you mind getting wet. There may be mosquitoes time to time, be mentally prepared. You will be knee deep in water, wear appropriate shoes, but you can leave the shoes in the car and go barefoot. Point 3- The darker the night, the better the luminescence. Note: In a certain area, the water illuminates when you dip your hand or anything else in it. Swimming is prohibited there but hands, legs, peddles are all ok. Thats what it is. And to think its all because of a certain plankton, a natural phenomenon, is what makes it all that special. A starlit sky above, a huge expanse of water in the dark where u can only hear one another, your kayaking partner beside you, your team with you, all kayaking, laughing, listening to the night sounds, or catching sight of a sleepy iguana- all these make it a fun experience. And gosh the guides ! They are so helpful and absolutely hilarious, all the while being motivated... if I completed anything and made it through, it was only because of them. Yes, it all exciting, adventurous and fun, but if in your head you have built up a magically lit pond (which, i had), then NO its not that at all. I want to stress on this again - the guides were absolutely wonderful people. They make sure everyone enjoy and keep the whole experience interactive while making sure all the precautions are followed. And if I can put a check mark its only because of they not giving up on us, and they waited, helped and made us not miss the experience however late we were. ( anyone reading this seen Maya Bazaar- Laahiri Laahiri Laahiri lo...)

I just wanted to give a shutout to their honesty! We were unable to get there on-time because our other tour took longer than we anticipated! I called to let them know and I knew we wont be able to get a refund based on their policy! The lady who answered the phone offered to try to sell our tickets (it was one hour before the tour and we were 2 hours away) She said she will be honest and if they sell the tickets she will refund me! I said okay thinking there is no way they give us the refund! I admit I judged too soon and I was wrong! A few days later, I saw that they refunded me the full price for 6 tickets! I was very surprised and so happy! I usually don't write any reviews but their act definitely deserves 5 stars! I really appreciated their help! I hope one day I get to actually experience the tour! Cheers!

I really wanted to love this experience. I had high hopes for it but a few things just fell short. - Don't believe the photos. I felt like a chump believing that what I was going to see, will be like (or similar) to what you see online. It was nothing like that. Not even close. To be fair, it wasn't the peak season to go. I learned that the best time to go is between December and April but even then I was told it will NEVER look like what they show in pictures. Was bummed about that but oh well. On the more positive side, it's nature and something you don't get to see everywhere which made it more unique. - The whole point of choosing THIS company was for the glass bottom kayak which we couldn't get cause my partner was over the weight limit sooo bummer there. - There was way too many people. The canal is pretty narrow and not everyone is experienced with kayaking. And at night, it's pitch black on top of that so it gets hard to navigate. You have to stay close behind the person in front of you which can be difficult if they are having a hard time (and it is tiring..physically) then when another group is coming through, people are colliding with each other. Huge mess! We made a point to stay further behind just so we can enjoy the trip more and not be on top of people but it gets so dark that I could barely see where I was going. There was a branch from the grove that was sticking out that I didn't see which hit my paddle and caused the paddle to hit me in the face pretty hard. Luckily it wasn't my face that hit that branch...I was not a fan of that. - The guides though were pretty cool guys. They were funny and gave out some interesting facts about the bay. Overall, I'm glad I got to have this experience even though it wasn't what I was hoping it would be. It was one more unique thing I got to try out. However, I wouldn't do it again.

I have been to the bio bay on Vieques island so this tour was a major disappointment. I was shocked when I realized that they had to put a giant tarp over us to see the faint light. The company itself is decent. Pretty cool kayaks. However I didn't have a great personal experience with kayaking. My friend and I were completely new and we had trouble navigating the boat. It was really dark and crowded on the water. At some point we got very behind and couldn't find anyone to help us out. The guys did their best given the complicated situation but the tour was not particularly great.

Best tour in Puerto Rico ever ! The crew was amazing, full of knowledge, very professional and awesome customer service skills, from booking, during tour and after the end for the tour they surprised us with snacks and water. Manolo is super sweet, don't miss the opportunity of lean about this Jewel in Las croaba Fajardo PR

The best overall experience of our entire trip. We found this company through Bespoke Tours. Are we ever glad that we did this, and more importantly are we ever glad that we used this company. GlassbottomPR was organized, efficient and safe. We took the early tour, which I highly recommend. Kayaking though the mangroves was the best part in this. One thing that you should consider is the moon phase before booking this. We had a full moon, which almost (ALMOST) ruined the experience. Fortunately, Glassbottom tours had a plan for the moon and it made everything even more awesome. We didnt see any other groups doing this, which just confirmed how much better this company is than the others Our guides were funny and very professional. I cant stress enough to try to book an earlier trip, not the second trip. Don't bother bringing a go pro or camera, they aren't allowed. do bring bug spray and a bathing suit. Don't miss this experience, it was as good as advertised.

It was magical! I wasn't sure what to expect and was a bit apprehensive but all the guides were knowledgeable and friendly which put me at ease. My entire family thought it was an AMAZING experience and would do it again! Special shout-out to Manolo for making it truly unforgettable with the bonus stargazing! Definitely a must-do in Puerto Rico!

It's a super nice experience, was fun and beautiful! And good amount of physical activity, kayaking at night with the fullmoon, AMAZING!!!

Photo of Danny F.

We did this kayaking as part of a joint tour of El Yunque from another company called Fun PR Tours. Firstly, don't google pictures of the Bioluminescent Bay prior to doing this tour. You will be disappointed by what you see. I know they say the moon has an effect on the views you get, but we went on a night when the moon wasn't even in the sky which is supposed to be the best time to go, and yet we barely saw any glow. The guys who ran this were pretty cool and helpful though. This was my first time kayaking ever. What I had envisioned was us getting on a kayak into the bio bay, being surrounded by glowing waters just like the pictures you see on google, and kayaking leisurely around for 20-30 minutes. However be prepared for a WORKOUT! If you're not a fit person I don't know how you could do this. You have to kayak nearly an hour against the current through a very narrow swampy smelly canal with lots of twists and turns until you finally reach the Bay. Once you get to the Bay you line up with the other kayakers in a line and they give an explanation of the bay and the science behind the microorganisms that glow. Then they throw a smelly tarp over your head. You then have to stick your arm all the way down into the water to see a little glow. I didn't see anything. Some people did. The glass bottom was supposed to help with the view but it didn't for me. On the way back it's pitch black. But you're kayaking with the current so it's not as difficult. But several kayakers crashed into each other and we witnessed one flip over. Don't hesitate to ask one of the tour guides to bring you back if you don't think you will be able to navigate through the canal alone. I don't know if it's fair to blame the kayak company for the lack of an impressive view at the bay. I'm not sure if they took us to the right spot or what. Perhaps the view is better at another part of the bay or near the shore like the pictures on google. I guess I'll never know. The experience was difficult, but definitely memorable. The guys did the best job they could at leading such a large group of kayakers. They were very knowledgeable about the science of the bay. Afterwards they treated everyone to chips and drinks.

The tour was really well run and a good adventure. Kayaking back in the dark with the birds making all their sounds was super fun. If your main goal is to see bioluminescence, then you will be let down. The only way to see it was with a tarp over your head and sticking your elbow deep between the kayaks and waving as hard as you can. We did see it...little sparks in the water which was still neat but not quite what we were expecting.

Full Moon Kayak Eco Adventure

Tour includes double kayaks, lifejackets, refreshments and two to three guides depending on group size. Don’t let your day end when the sun goes down! We offer relaxing kayak tours at sunset that lead to the fascinating Laguna Grande in the town of Fajardo located on the Northeast corner of the island!

Our Full Moon Fajardo Bio Bay Kayak Adventure is the perfect nature adventure under a full moon, and if your stay in Puerto Rico happens to fall during the full moon stage you don’t have to miss out on our “Night Kayaking Tours”! This tour was developed as an alternative to the Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak Adventure during the full moon cycle as the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organism. But that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of natures secrets that are normally overlooked on the darkest nights!

“Responsible Marketing”

*“No Swimming” is permitted in Laguna Grande under Reglament 8013 of the Department of Natural Resources. Also note that since 2007 the Department of Natural Resources has appointed nine licensed outfitters for kayak tours within Laguna Grande. All hold different nightly total for guest capacity, with this said the area is saturated, it would be advised that if your vacation plans allow it, it is best to book Monday through Thursday as traffic in the area is less.

Friday & Saturday are packed, although the adventure is still wonderful be prepared to deal with large groups of people as well as local traffic in the area.

The activity will start at sunset in the small fishing village of Las Croabas, here you will meet the friendly guides of Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours kayak adventure team. They will be set-up with all needed gear which will include, Double kayaks, Backrest, Paddles with leashes, lifejackets, all needed safety equipment, lights and refreshments. The activity will start with botanical insect repellent, waiver orientation and signing. Then the lead Guide will give each group a complete kayak “101 Safety” training, which will cover all aspects of the tour and the operation of their kayaks, then guides will start lifejacket and light disbursement!

At this point our tour will start, your group will be lead across a small fisherman’s harbor to the entrance of Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve here they will enter a mystical channel that leads to a peaceful place where the mangroves create natural tunnels and the sights and sounds of wildlife surround you! After a 25 to 30 minute paddle through the channel, based on traffic and tidal currents your lead guide will be stopping once in the lagoon to give commentary on the following points of interest:

• Mangrove forest and the different species. • Bird life that inhabits the area. • Aquatic marine life that uses the lagoon as an estuary. • Information on the Bioluminescence organism. • History on the lighthouse. • Insight on seven of eight ecosystems found in the area.

At this point we will enter the lagoon called Laguna Grande, (large Lagoon) here we will paddle along the edge of the mangrove forest as we watch the stroke of each paddle light up a bioluminescent blue-green/white-green and encounter fish that look like shooting stars as they swim through the thick concentration of “Pyrodinium Bahamense” a species of “Dinoflagellate”!

This will lead the group to our break point where beautiful views of the Rainforest and the lighthouse of Fajardo accompany interpretation of the natural area and good conversations. Now we are about 1 hour into our tour, interpretation of the natural area has ended and our group is now in route to “Bird Island” to view many birds that roust here at night! Once quietly rounding the small island we will start our return to the departure site, this will take about 30 to 45 minutes.

Tour duration is 1:45 – 2:00 hours in water with 45 minutes of pre-bus and waiver orientation – pre-ride (kayak – 101) safety training and fifteen minutes once back on shore for snacks, cold water and closing comments for a total of 3 hours.
