How to Store Pastels

Written by   sophie | pastel.

Storing pastels is always a topic of conversation amongst pastel artists. Well, until you find the perfect solution that is. And I think I have finally found it. In an  earlier post  I wrote about organising your pastels by colour, value, brand or type. In this article I thought it might be useful to go over the ways we can store our pastels. Many would agree that the boxes your pastels come in are not ideal, so let’s see what alternatives there are.

First you Buy One Box of Pastels…

When you buy a box of pastels they usually come in gorgeous looking cardboard boxes with foam inserts. Each foam cutout will fit a single pastel perfectly, and it all looks yummy. They are already ordered by colour for you. So you could easily leave them in their boxes as you use them.

When the Pastel Collection Grows

But if you end up buying another box of pastel things get messed up. You will have two boxes with all the colours in it. So you will have some reds in one box and also in the other. Then you might buy a box of pastels from a different brand. That box will have reds in them too so now you have reds in three places. At another time you might buy some loose pastels for which no space is left in your foam shaped inserts. So they go in an old shoe box. A fourth place to find your reds. It is time to organise your pastels!

Time to Organise your Pastels

Many artists  organise their pastels  by colour; all the reds together, all the blues etc. Many also order by value and some by temperature. Organised pastels are much easier to work with when you are painting. You can find the colour you need much quicker than going through four boxes to find the perfect red.

But when you are done painting, where are you going to put those pastels?

I found my own system lacking so I went on the hunt for a good storage system to put my pastels in, organised and all.

I realised quickly I wanted to get rid of the foam inserts that pastels come with. Most pastels get broken or are simply used up into smaller pieces. Small pieces don’t fit into foam cutouts. I also have different brands of pastels ( Rembrandt ,  Unison ,  Schmincke ) which all have a different shape. Foam cutouts had to go.

What I need is something that takes little space and can be put in a cupboard. Something which allows me to take out my pastels and spread them out on the table next to my easel (as many as I can fit on). Something I can put away when I am done painting. Something that will allow me to expand my pastel collection in the future (no plans for retirement yet!). For me, it had to be something that will last me forever as I really don’t want to have to do this every few years, and it won’t hurt if it looks nice too.

Storage Solutions

Many artists use fold-open wooden travel boxes for their pastels. Popular brands are  Heilman  and  Dakota   and  Jackson’s . These are great because not only do they look good and keep your pastels safe, but these boxes are mobile. They are designed to be carried and taken out and so very popular with plein-air painters or demonstrators. But many pastelists use them in the studio as well. I had a look at the Jackson’s box (the small one) and found them well made, sturdy, but heavy.

As I am not a plein-air painter and because I have limited space in my studio (folded open these boxes take up quite a bit of space, especially if you have many pastels) I did not think this was the one for me. But if you have the space to fold open these boxes and/or your travel a lot, these boxes seem great. These type of boxes are one of the most popular pastel storage solutions.

Box with Trays

An alternative storage solution I found was an art box with various trays kept in it. The trays usually have compartments and foam inserts at the bottom to keep your pastels safe and secure. Below is a great example of how John Shakespeare    stores his pastels. I love how organised it all looks! Again it looks useful for taking to places and good storage for a decent collection of pastels. Do keep in mind you will need another box if your pastel collection expands though. But a box like this will be easy to store and does not take up much space.  Amazon  and  Jackson’s do boxes like this.

Be Creative!

Many pastel lovers use their own creativity to come up with storage ideas. Empty food boxes, tool chests, cutlery tray inserts, plastic containers, stackable trays, large filing cabinets, old and antique drawers. Check out my Pinterest board for lots of ideas!

Wooden Drawers

A very popular choice amongst pastel artists are these shallow wooden drawers. I was quite taken by this ideas as it takes up little space and looks nice. Almost all art supplies stores sell these sets. Many are brandless and many look the same. Unfortunately many of the ones I saw online looked fairly cheaply made but were not cheap to buy (around £40 seemed standard for a 3 drawer set, measuring around 40x26cm). I figured (wild guess!) I have about 500 pastels and so needed 3 or 4 of these sets to fit them all in so this was going to get expensive.

I emailed various art supply stores to get some more info on the drawer sets they stocked. Many shops had very little information online. I needed to know whether the slightly fatter  Unison  pastels would fit in, whether the dividers in the drawers could be removed, if there was space for some foam at the base, what material the set was made of, whether it looked and felt posh and expensive or cheap and cheerful, etc.

Another model is made by Artcoe, called  Frisk . It seems identical to the Fife set, if you look at the pictures. Art shops gave me mixed reports on the drawer depth so I could not figure out whether Unison would fit but most told me it would.

Jackson’s also stocks a similar looking set for a similar price (see picture). This is their own brand. Unisons fit in fine as do all other main brands of pastels.

oil pastel travel case

Do keep in mind that some pastel brands are quite thick and will not fit in many of the standard pastel boxes.

My Storage Choice

Although I soon realised that a drawer set would be the best solution for me I was not blown away by the quality of most sets. Luckily I found something else at Jackson’s that suited me better. This drawer set was a ‘mistake’; a batch of wooden drawers that they don’t actually stock and they had some of these left. I found the wood quality much nicer and the drawers therefore looked much nicer as well. The only thing (it was an odd batch after all) is that the drawers didn’t close very well. But I liked them enough to buy them and after a day of sanding and planing, it all works beautifully.

I am now extremely pleased with my wooden drawers. I got a few extra drawers for the future (as I doubt I’ll ever be able to buy them again) but most are filled to the rim with my pastels and pencils. I can take the dividers out if I want, I can stack them (the weight of it keeps it in place and stops it from slipping), and the wood feels nice and qualitative.  I have put some Unisons on my Christmas list this year so if Santa thinks I’ve been good I can’t wait to add them to the collection!

Some things to keep in mind for finding the perfect pastel storage

(depending on your requirements)

  • flexibility in compartments
  • lightweight
  • easy to carry
  • shallow but deep enough for large pastels (measure!)
  • has (room for) foam if you move them around a lot
  • will work for you in your studio: setting out and painting, as well as putting away
  • Looks good, nice materials

I love reading your blog! Thanks. Just wanted to add: I’ve bout two boxes and first one. Was a treat. It’s well made and had no chemical smell.

It’s the 7 element set of 4 drawers. I bought peel and stick velour paper to cut into my section ( I did not know the sections come out). Unison fit find as do all my fat richesons.

I tried to use a 6 drawer medeen next but it would not pull properly and it smelled too bad.

I’m using a foam based stinkeroo from creative arts which really surprised me. It’s well made but it doesn’t hook into the first brand, but I can’t live with the 6 day smellorama this is 5 drawers for 45.00

There is a 2set pegged together for 10 drawers fo 69.00 that I’m still dreaming about.

I am a sucker …. I think I need to convert my old copy paper rolling organizer and stack your cutlery ideas. Cus I have dreams of many shimmering pastels.

When I was much younger I had an art supply store. It was back in the 70’s. There weren’t many choices in pastel brands back then. I sold Rembrandts. They were in a largish box with multiple drawers unlike the displays you see today. When I closed the shop I kept the display box. It’s been very useful over the years and is much like the boxes shown here stacked but it’s one large box with maybe 7 drawers.

Oh you lucky man! If the boxes are what I have in mind, then those are brilliant storage boxes. In some art stores you still see them. Thanks for commenting. 🙂

You ever think of selling it…. I’m just saying

It sounds divine. I saw a picture of a magnificent piece of custom French cabinetry. The easel was at front and the slim panels of all pastels pulled up from some sorcery below it. They easily went 8” by 6 foot across. Maybe 12 inches? There were no measurements

It reminded me of late 19th century bars with a huge mirror and custom lay flat panels for paintings plus lots of drawers and tool storage. It was done in deep mahogany and cost $5800..

Guess I’ll be looking at those fake French desk apothecary boxes. Lol

Degas pastel box (like a thin suitcase) from Jerry’s Artarama. I replaced the thin foam with memory foam sheets from Dakota Pastels, cut to fit. It’s large, heavy, but could be transported around if necessary. It holds the pastels firmly in place because of the memory foam, the original foam was not secure enough. There are cardboard box inserts, so you can switch collections if you want.

Excellent suggestion! Thanks Deborah.

At the hardware store my husband bought a plastic parts box for nuts and bolts and things like that. I cut up an old bath towel as a lining and my pastels fit in there nicely. I then sort them by color and light to dark. I use a tv tray to set it on when I am working and I keep it flat on a book shelf. It was under 5 bucks!

Excellent idea! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Hi Sophie! I’d like to put my nickel’s worth in here! Mike Mahon makes a great solution that takes an approach you haven’ mentioned here. He calls it the “Pastel Porter”. It’s pricey, but I was able to obtain one a while back through an assistance program with the DepARTment of Vocational Rehab. in Wisconsin ( It’s a Federal program for people with disabilities ). Instead of laying the sticks down flat in the box, Mike created a system that sets them on end in foam! As you pull the stick out from the foam, it cleans the stick! It’s quite brilliant! The box folds open & mounts to an included easel system! As I mentioned, I think it’s rather overpriced, but one could extrapolate on the concept! The great thing about this technique is that I can store all sizes! From my skinny Rowneys that I ADORE for detail work, to my big fat Mount Visions that have the single most DELICIOUS darks available! I have more sticks of Pastel than I’m ever going to be inclined to count! LOL! Subsequently, I require a rather large Studio space, since I also work in Watercolor, Colored Pencil ( talk about a storage nightmare!), Graphite Pencil ( more storage nightmares ), & Scratchboard ( need I be redundant!? ). I currently live in a small 1 bdrm apARTment & my work is quickly over-running things! I’m planning to move into a larger place come June! I don’t have a *Studio* in my ApARTment! . . . . I have an *ApARTment* in my Studio! LOL! It’s a good thing that I live alone! I need about 3 bedrooms all the same! LOL! Anyway, look up Mike Mahon’s Pastel Porter! It’s really nice!

Hi Justin, thanks so much for that. A great contribution to the article! I have looked it up and found it: http://mikemahonspastelporter.com It looks really handy, what a great idea. Thanks again for sharing this. And yes, storage must be one of the main things us artists struggle with!!

  • Understanding Oil Pastels

Oil pastels are a unique type of artistic medium that combines the qualities of oil paint and traditional pastels. They are made by blending pigment with a small amount of non-drying oil, such as mineral oil or wax. This composition gives oil pastels a rich, intense color and a smooth, buttery consistency that sets them apart from other types of pastels.

Unlike soft pastels, which are made of powdered pigments mixed with a binder, oil pastels have a higher pigment concentration and contain oil that acts as a binder. This allows oil pastels to be used on a wide range of surfaces, including paper, canvas, and even wood.

Proper storage is vital for oil pastels because of their unique composition. The oil in oil pastels makes them susceptible to smudging, melting, and breakage if not stored correctly. By implementing the right storage techniques, you can protect your oil pastels from these potential hazards and ensure their longevity.

  • Choosing the Right Storage Container

When it comes to storing oil pastels, selecting the right container is crucial. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a storage container:

  • Size: The container should be spacious enough to accommodate your entire collection of oil pastels. Consider the number of pastels you have and whether you plan to expand your collection in the future.
  • Material: Opt for a container made of sturdy and durable material to prevent damage. Plastic, metal, or wooden containers are popular choices.
  • Compartments: Look for containers with dividers or compartments to keep your pastels organized and prevent them from rubbing against each other.
  • Portability: If you plan to carry your oil pastels with you while traveling or painting outdoors, choose a container that is lightweight and has a secure closing mechanism.
  • Accessibility: Consider how easy it is to access your pastels from the container. Containers with removable trays or drawers provide convenient access to your oil pastels.

Recommended types of containers for storing oil pastels include:

  • Art Supply Boxes: These boxes are specifically designed for storing art supplies and come in various sizes and compartments to accommodate oil pastels.
  • Tackle Boxes: Tackle boxes, typically used for fishing gear, are a cost-effective option for storing and organizing your oil pastels.
  • Art Bags or Cases: These portable bags or cases have individual slots or compartments for storing your oil pastels, making them ideal for artists on the go.
  • Pastel Trays: If you prefer to have your oil pastels displayed and easily accessible, pastel trays with foam inserts can provide a visually appealing storage solution.

When selecting a storage container, keep these features in mind:

  • Secure Lid: Make sure the container has a lid that can be securely closed to protect your oil pastels from dust, moisture, and other external factors.
  • Light Protection: Look for containers with light-blocking or opaque materials to prevent direct sunlight from affecting the pigments of your oil pastels.
  • Stackability: If you have limited space, consider containers that can be stacked on top of each other for efficient storage.
  • Adjustable Dividers: Containers with adjustable dividers or modular compartments allow you to customize the storage space according to your needs and the size of your oil pastels.

By considering these factors and features, you can choose a storage container that offers optimal protection and organization for your beloved oil pastels.

  • Preparing the Storage Container

Once you have selected the right storage container for your oil pastels, it’s important to prepare it properly to ensure the best storage conditions. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Cleaning the Container: Before placing your oil pastels in the container, make sure it is clean and free from any dust or debris. Use a soft cloth or a mild cleaning solution to wipe down the interior of the container.

2. Adding Protective Lining or Trays: To provide an extra layer of protection, consider adding a protective lining or trays inside the container. This can help prevent the oil pastels from touching the container directly, reducing the risk of smudging or breakage. You can use felt, foam, or even velvet as a lining material, or opt for pre-made trays designed for art supplies.

3. Organizing the Container for Easy Access: To make finding and retrieving your oil pastels hassle-free, it’s a good idea to organize them in a logical and efficient manner. You can arrange them by color, size, or any other system that works best for you. Consider grouping similar shades together or organizing them in a way that inspires your creativity. Some containers come with built-in dividers or trays, making organization even easier.

By taking these steps, you can ensure that your storage container is clean, lined with protective material, and organized in a way that allows for easy access to your oil pastels.

To store oil pastels, keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Store them vertically in a container to prevent breakage and keep the caps on to avoid drying out.

  • Storing Oil Pastels Properly

Now that your storage container is prepared, it’s time to store your oil pastels in a way that keeps them safe and well-preserved. Here are some important steps to follow:

1. Wrapping Each Pastel Individually: To protect your oil pastels from smudging and mingling colors, it’s advisable to wrap each pastel individually. You can use small pieces of parchment paper, tissue paper, or even wax paper. This will create a barrier between the pastels and prevent them from rubbing against each other.

2. Arranging Pastels by Color or Size: Organizing your oil pastels by color or size not only helps you locate the specific pastel you’re looking for quickly, but it also minimizes the likelihood of damage during storage. You can group them in sections or rows within the container, ensuring that each pastel has its own designated space.

3. Preventing Damage and Breakage: To further protect your oil pastels from damage and breakage, avoid overfilling the storage container, as it may cause pressure and lead to breakage. Make sure there is enough room for the pastels to be arranged comfortably without squeezing them together. Additionally, handle the pastels with care when placing them in the container or taking them out to prevent any accidental drops or mishandling.

Storing your oil pastels in individual wrappers, arranging them by color or size, and taking precautions to prevent damage and breakage will help keep your pastels in excellent condition and prolong their lifespan.

  • Maintaining Ideal Storage Conditions

Proper storage conditions are crucial for preserving the quality of your oil pastels. Here are some key factors to consider:

1. Controlling Temperature and Humidity: It’s important to store your oil pastels in an environment with stable temperature and humidity levels. Extreme temperatures can cause the pastels to melt or become brittle, while high humidity can lead to softening or mold growth. Aim for a temperature range between 50-70°F (10-21°C) and a relative humidity of around 40-60%. Avoid storing them in places prone to temperature fluctuations or areas with high humidity, such as basements or bathrooms.

2. Avoiding Direct Sunlight and Extreme Heat or Cold: Sunlight can fade the colors of your oil pastels over time, so it’s crucial to keep them away from direct sunlight or intense artificial lighting. Additionally, extreme heat or cold can alter the consistency of the pastels or cause them to crack. Avoid storing them near radiators, heating vents, or in areas exposed to extreme temperature changes.

3. Tips for Long-Term Storage: If you plan to store your oil pastels for an extended period, consider taking the following precautions:

  • Use Airtight Containers: Opt for containers with airtight seals to prevent moisture or air from affecting your pastels. This can help maintain their consistency and prevent them from drying out.
  • Desiccant Packets: Inserting desiccant packets into your storage container can help absorb excess moisture and protect your pastels from humidity-related issues.
  • Rotate Pastels: Periodically rotate the pastels in your storage container to prevent any one pastel from being exposed to pressure for too long. This will help distribute the weight evenly and minimize the risk of breakage.
  • Check for Mold or Insect Infestation: Regularly inspect your stored oil pastels for any signs of mold growth or insect infestation. If you notice any issues, remove the affected pastels immediately to prevent further damage.

By maintaining ideal storage conditions and following these tips for long-term storage, you can ensure that your oil pastels remain in optimal condition and ready for use whenever inspiration strikes.

  • Additional Tips and Tricks

When it comes to oil pastel storage, there are some additional tips and tricks that can help you keep your pastels organized and protected. Here are some suggestions:

1. Labeling and Categorizing Pastels: To easily identify and locate specific colors, consider labeling your pastels. You can use stickers or small labels on the wrapping or the pastel itself. Categorizing them by color families or shades can also help streamline your creative process.

2. Using Storage Accessories: There are various storage accessories available that can enhance your oil pastel storage experience. For example, foam inserts or foam pads can be added to your storage container to provide extra cushioning and prevent pastels from moving around. Additionally, dividers or separators can help keep different colors or sizes separated and organized.

3. Travel-Friendly Storage Options: If you enjoy painting on the go or attending art classes or workshops, having a travel-friendly storage solution is essential. Look for compact and lightweight storage options such as small art supply carry cases or pouches designed specifically for oil pastels. These options often have individual slots or compartments to keep your pastels secure and organized during travel.

4. Regular Maintenance: Take some time periodically to clean and organize your storage container. Remove any dust or debris that may have accumulated and wipe down the interior with a soft cloth. This not only helps maintain a clean storage environment but also allows you to assess the condition of your pastels and identify any issues that may require attention.

5. Store Vertically: Storing your pastels vertically can minimize the risk of them smudging or breaking. This is especially important if you have softer oil pastels that tend to be more delicate. Vertical storage prevents the pastels from rubbing against each other horizontally, reducing the chances of damage.

By implementing these additional tips and tricks, you can take your oil pastel storage to the next level, ensuring easy access, organization, and protection for your precious art supplies.

Properly storing your oil pastels is essential for their long-term preservation and maintaining their vibrant colors and smooth textures. By understanding the unique qualities of oil pastels and following the guidelines outlined in this article, you can ensure that your oil pastels are kept in optimal condition, ready for your creative endeavors.

Choosing the right storage container that suits your needs and preferences is the first step. Consider factors such as size, material, compartments, and portability when selecting a container. Organizing your oil pastels within the container, wrapping them individually, and arranging them by color or size will help prevent smudging, mingling colors, and accidental breakage.

Maintaining ideal storage conditions is crucial for the longevity of your oil pastels. Control temperature and humidity levels, avoid direct sunlight and extreme heat or cold, and follow tips for long-term storage, such as using airtight containers and desiccant packets.

By implementing additional tips and tricks, such as labeling and categorizing pastels, using storage accessories, and considering travel-friendly storage options, you can further enhance your oil pastel storage experience.

Remember to regularly clean and maintain your storage container to ensure a clean and organized environment for your oil pastels.

With proper storage techniques and a little extra care, your oil pastels will remain vibrant, ready to be used whenever inspiration strikes. So, invest in the right storage solutions, follow these guidelines, and enjoy the magic that oil pastels bring to your artwork for years to come.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

oil pastel travel case

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

oil pastel travel case

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Jackson's Empty Wooden Pastel Case (holds 112 soft pastels)

Each pastel measures approximately 55mm in length and 15mm in diameter.

So happy with this box! Even with shipping to the US it is a wonderful value. I am using to take my pastels to class every week. Am new to pastels, but they are addictive, so I have my eye on the larger box already.

I’m amazed at the quality of this pastel box given the very reasonable price. The woodwork is beautiful, the hardware sturdy, and the design very workable. I look forward to using this box en Plein air.

Amazing price for such a high quality piece! The wood is beautiful and solid, natural grain and unique to each box. The padding inside is flat so you can put all your broken portions in without a problem, there is also an added piece of foam for the top so they're held in place just fine between the bottom and top foam. A prior review suggested that the two halves should be able to be separated, it looks like that was taken to heart! I can confirm that mine came with a hinge that was easy to slide apart and back together! I feel like it should be a feature that is promoted more because it really is nice to have. The hinge connection is still very solid, I'm not afraid of it coming apart by accident. I would prefer 4 clips per half holding the white retaining board in place, I think that would make it absolutely perfect. However, if I take a second more opening it and make sure the board doesn't slip it's not really much of an issue. I also got the smaller, square version and those were just as well made but did not have the open hinge however, I don't think they necessarily need it given their size (although I believe it also could benefit from 4 clips per section on the inside to hold the white board). The wood on both does appear to have a thin coat on it that seals it because it's very easy to wipe clean with a wet towel. I love, love LOVE these boxes! Also, I was reluctant to order them for quite a while due to shipping all the way to the US, but shipping was free on my order and it was faster than my US shipments! Super fast! A+ Jackson's!

This is a great pastel box, similar to the Heilman box, which is the gold standard of pastel boxes. Jackson’s box is not as sturdy or bullet-proof as the Heilman, but costs much less, which works for me, since I mostly work at home. I’ve used it to go to classes, and it keeps everything in place. Great box for organizing your pastels by colors and values.

Poor quality control took three attempts to receive this and it is still not perfect and I will have to fit more sponge. On the photo the sponge goes to the edges but not in practice

The best pastel box for storing and carrying your soft pastels.

Excellent product. Holds all my pastels. Exactly as described.

the product is excellent. Just what I needed

I had expected to pay a lot more for a pastel case. This is well made and the combination of foam and melamine hold all my mixed manufacture pastels firmly.

My loose Unison pastels fit nicely. I like the holding lids that stop them falling out. Good design

Good thing well constructed

Very good quality product for the price. The only slight weakness is that there are only two fairly insubstantial retainers for the interior boards which hold the pastels and foam in place. If you want a squarer footprint it's easy to relocate the hinges to the longer side.

I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality and smart appearance of this box, considering the low price. It's a simple job to move the hinges from the short to the long side, so that when unfolded it has a more squarish footprint. The only potential weaknesses are the little clips which hold the melamine sheets in place - they could be stronger and four in number rather than two. But excellent overall

I love this box. It holds all the essential colours I like when I'm out and about. I'm with other reviewers who would recommend adding more, and stronger, clips inside to secure the white lids that hold the pastels down. Also the latches open too easily. Hence only 4 stars. A trip to a hardware store and a little time will sort those insecurities out though. Otherwise, fantastic for the price.

The box is beautiful, holds many pastels and is great value. The only tiny improvement I'd suggest is adding a second latch to hold each white lid because the lids tend to bend slightly open on the side where there's no latch. Or maybe just make less fragile latches: if they were a little longer and held better, there would be less risk to see all the pastels fall off the box when opening it. Been there once, now I carefully hold the white lid flat against the pastels when I open the box.

International shipping to Seattle, WA in USA excellent. The empty wooden pastel case holds 112 (small box). I love this case, well made and spacious for my pastel travel. My classmates they will love it. I recommend to anyone. Thanks Jackson's

Very good value - box the wooden box and the pastels.

The hinge on the box broke soon after purchase,I am unable to get through to firm on customer services

All the screws are way too small for the latches, and they rip out! My hubby had to replace them with REAL screws. Not the greatest workmanship. Disappointed!

Well made, safe for travelling. Holds a great many pastels securely for outside locations as well as studio storage. I found no other product that did this with size and quality anywhere near as well.

Exellent! Its - ideal for store and use.

Good quality item at a very reasonable price

A little disappointed in the quality of the stay clasps. One broke on third usage. I'll repair it myself. The screws holding those in are pathetic.

well made and great for storing pastels

Great product. Exactly what I was looking for but couldn't find anywhere else. Price was reasonable for a well made and designed carrying case.

Excellent value for money

This has met my expectation and allowed my pastels to be arranged in one place and with simple accessibility. A good product.

excellent even full still light weight can see all my colours in one layer (i hope jacksons have a good stock as all at my different classes want one)

Does what it says on the tin fabulous product

Very good service thanks

This is a very good value case, with an internal layout like the USA's Heilman box. The retaining panels in each half really work well at keeping the pastels in place. An excellent portable box, good design, well made....don't change anything!...I'm tempted to buy another.

The quality of products from this company can be relied on.

great for the purpose..robust and well made

One suggestion I would make is that the pastel case on the end with the hinges have interlocking hinges which would allow an artist to separate the two sections and place them side by side. The case requires at least 42 inches of linear space on a table when it is opened. I have looked for these hinges but have been unsuccessful so far. My son is a professor at the University of London. Perhaps he will have success there. Any suggestions where to look are appreciated. I'm also going to put at least one coat of varathane on the wood to protect it from pastel dust et cetera. Still a very useful product which was not available here. Thank you. Bill McKinnie

The box is well made BUT the pastels roll about when in transit. I have put some bubble wrap between the removal covers and the pastels to prevent this. I think there should be a layer of foam included to stop the pastels rolling around.

Good box with plenty of storage

Good value for money. It holds allot of pastels

The box has a corner that has been dented- not sure if it was during transit. one of the latches is missing a screw and the corner miters on one corner seem to be falling apart. over all the quality is not very good

Very, very pleased with this pastel case. It is well made and spacious. The cover lids to each section are a great idea and keep the pastels in place perfectly. A super gift idea.

Very pleas ed with the case.Excellent value.g r

Love this Pastel box, the fold over design makes it easy to store and use, not too heavy when fully loaded and keeps the full set safe and secure, would recommend.
