Saxon Reef offers an abundance of diverse areas to explore for both snorkelers and scuba divers.

What our customers say

Down under dive's evolution - extraordinary experience.

"My husband and I have done numerous reef trips in our glorious back yard, but this was by far the best. Evolution is a perfectly designed vessel for this type of experience, manned by outstanding staff, who give all guests an unforgettable day. I could not fault any part of the trip, from the food, professionalism, diving, weather and the relaxing attitude of the staff. There's a reason why they are in the top 5 in the world - an absolutely fabulous day out. This company has perfected the reef experience - not to take away from other operators in Cairns & Port Douglas, but this was just a cut above the rest. We loved it!" - NancyFNQ via

My brother and I booked the Kuranda tour up on the scenic railway and back on the SkyRail. The entire day was a great experience. Highly recommend doing this tour - the views are incredible and Kuranda was a lot of fun to wander around. Down Under was accommodating in picking us up and dropping us off at our hotel, even with a last minute change. We liked that this was a self-guided day once we were dropped off at the train station. Overall, no negative feedback. They took good care of us that day!

We booked a Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail trip with Down Under Tours and they were flawless in their execution of coordinating pickup and drop off at the hotel. They arrived precisely when they said they would to pick us up in the morning and on route to our destination the guide pointed out interesting landmarks as well as suggestions on things to do. The tour ticket also included discounts for Kuranda Village activities which was nice! After completing the Skyrail, Down Under Tours staff was easily recognizable and shuttled us back to the hotel. All around, they made the day worry free for us especially when their were 3 separate activities that needed to be planned; Down Under Tours jumps in and takes away all the worry of coordinating logistics. The tour schedule and timing made for a perfect agenda.

Went on a tour today of the daintree forest, crocodile river cruise, and mossman gorge, with our guide, Mark! New, air conditioned bus which is a must in the humid rainforest. He kept the day interesting with his anecdotes and knowledge of the area! Especially his love for the cassowary.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Down Under Tours Australia: Reviews

Fantastic experience: We took the down under reef tour and it was fantastic. The ship was brand new (and huge), the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was decent and amazingly all the extra items available for purchase were reasonably priced ($5 beer, $2 sea sickness tablets, $35 rented underwater camera, etc...). The refs we went to were awesome. Tip- go during bad weather and there will be less people on the boat and apparently it is more likely you will see giant turtles if the weather is bad. Of course the seas will be rougher, but that didn't bother me. All in all, it was a great tour!

Fantastic experience: Down under tours transfers from hotel to activity locations was excellent, props to driver Glynn.

Fantastic experience: The Great Barrier Reef tour was EPIC! All of the staff on-board were really nice, funny and great with their service. The equipment was all very good, the team were professional in their approach and we saw so many amazing things! Thank you to the team for getting us to some epic spots, underwater photographer and good food! We will certainly be back again!

Fantastic experience: We did the Mossman Gorge, Daintree, Cape Tribulation tour in July and cannot recommend it highly enough. It was brilliant!!! Scott was our guide and was extremely informative at the stops as well as pointing out highlights and history along the way. We had a terrific morning tea and the lunch was excellent quality ( I had Barra and the others had perfectly cooked steak) in lovely surroundings and of course, the fruit sorbet ice creams for afternoon tea were also very yum. The sights and the river cruise ( we saw 2 crocs) really exceeded our expectations, only disappointed that the cassowaries were in hiding. Fabulous day and would love to even do it again, the scenery is so beautiful and interesting. Scott, you are a treasure and your knowledge and funny stories really made the day for us, thank you.

Fantastic experience: Paul was a very funny and informative driver, we went to Hartley's Crocodile Adventures with him. Recommend

Fantastic experience: Down Under Tours can be congratulated on a fantastically 'designed' tour to Cape Tribulation, Daintree & Mosman Gorge, Queensland! The tour began in a very comfortable 4WD 'bus' to Cape Tribulation & a wonderful guided tour through the Daintree rainforest; a cruise along the Daintree River; morning tea at Mosman Gorge & a delicious tropical lunch ( we had the barramundi ) served at a restaurant amongst the backdrop of the rainforest! We also had a guided walk on the cape Tribulation Beach.... & finished off with a yummy tropical fruit icecream! We cannot speak highly enough about our bus driver/tour guide; Scott! He was very knowledgeable, interesting, witty & also managed to keep our group safely together throughout the tour! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.....

Fantastic experience: We thoroughly enjoyed our Daintree forest/river, Mossman Gorge tour with our fantastic driver and guide Scott. We were promptly picked up from our accommodation in the bus, which was very clean, cool and comfortable for our day's travelling. Scott's commentary and knowledge was first class throughout a wonderful day exploring the natural beauty of the area. HIs knowledge of the plants/wildlife/area was great and he was able to spot things that we wouldn't have seen otherwise! We were unable to get to Cape Tribulation due to damage caused by the recent cyclone but enjoyed our stop at Thornton beach. The lunch at Heritage lodge was delicious and was a lovely area to explore post lunch. The damper and tea at Mossman Gorge and icecream at Daintree Ice cream company were outstanding. A memorable day!!

Fantastic experience: Excellent guide/driver on the Cape Tribulation tour. His passion for the area the wildlife and the indigenous peoples really came across. Thank you Scott.

Fantastic experience: Perfect! Picked us up and dropped us off - very organised and throughly on time. Loved

Fantastic experience: We did the Cape tribulation, mossman gorge, and daintree River tour. An amazing day with our wonderful and informative guide Uta. Saw 2 crocodiles, and gained plenty of knowledge about the locations and wildlife!

Fantastic experience: FIRST CLASS TOUR Thank you Uta! Daintree Rainforest and River trip. An amazing day out.

Fantastic experience: brilliant tours and guides, buses comfortable and aircon. Beautiful area, military museum largest in Southern Hemisphere, skyrail, Kuranda railway tour. Beautiful put together, pick up and drop off to accommodation.

Fantastic experience: We went on the Cape Tribulation, Daintree & Mossman Gorge Tour. We were picked up from our hotel in Cairns by a lovely driver called Daniel. He was so knowledgeable, friendly & helpful. He went out of his way to make our day special. Thank you Daniel and Down Under Tours, a great day out and Daniel is a great ambassador for your company.

Fantastic experience: Went on the Mossman Gorge/Daintree/Cape Tribulation day trip today and it was fantastic. Daniel, our guide, was brilliant - gave us loads of information, answered all questions with ease, threw in some Aussie humour, pointed out wildlife we’d completely missed and was all round the best tour guide I have ever had, and I’ve done a lot of trips!

Fantastic experience: What a great tour. Cairns to Cape Tribluation. So much beautiful scenery . Great food. Lovely clean and comfortable transport. Our tour guide Scott was fantastic. Made the tour informative and fun. If you are in Cairns make sure you do this tour. Unforgettable experience.

Fantastic experience: We had a fun day out in The Daintree Rainforeat, Daintree River and Cape Tribulation! Scott was amazing! Incredibly educational! We have learnt so much about Australia's history.Only sorta buzzkill were the roadworks but we couldn't have predicted that. Scott's horrible yet funny dad jokes distracted us from that. Would definitely go again. Thank you Scott!!

Fantastic experience: Our day tour to Mossman Gorge, Daintree River and Cape Tribulation was an excellent experience all round. The vehicle was very comfortable , super clean and felt very safe and in good hands. We were so lucky to have a fantastic guide Scott who shared so much interesting information and we saw so much of that part of FNQ including the wildlife.

Fantastic experience: Spent the day with Mark from Down Under Tours, visiting the Janbal art gallery for an art lesson and a guided walk through the Mossman Gorge. The tour guide can either make or break your experience, and Mark definitely made it. Thank you Mark for a wonderful day!

Fantastic experience: We had Scott for our tour guide with a full day of Mossman, Daintree and Cape Tribulation. Bloody awesome, couldn’t have asked for a better day. Scott is very knowledgeable with all the facts, so glad we chose this company. Highly recommend this tour and having a great tour guide was a bonus!

Fantastic experience: Our driver Daniel was amazing he is full of knowledge as well as jokes and he can also speak German. Our tour to the Daintree, Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation was informative and fun. Our morning tea and lunch was super yummy especially the ice cream at the end of our day. Highly reccomend getting on a tour with Daniel.

Fantastic experience: On Wednesday the 3rd of August we visited Kuranda by booking a scenic train and sky rail tour with this company. They are very professional, well organised and most of all friendly and welcoming. On the way back to Cairns we had a driver who s name is Paul: he was simply amazing and made our day with his humour!Such an interesting person. Thank you Paul!

Fantastic experience: We had DUT plan a full day for us with train, skyrail and Heartly's. Everything went smooth, from pick-up to the ride back, and it was cheaper than it wouldve been if we had tried to plan it all ourselves. Special shout-out to Neil, who is the most natural tour guide I've ever met!

Fantastic experience: We booked a SkyRail combo to the Kuranda mountains with hotel transfers for a family of 5 and unfortunately I didn’t realise I missed one person until we were about to board the bus. The company was brilliant and sorted everything for us on the spot, got me a seat on the train despite it being full and printed out new passes for us which we were truly grateful for as I was worried one of us might miss out. The gondola ride was stunning with Barron waterfalls being the highlight of our trip. The train ride from Kuranda to Cairns was quite uncomfortable and I don’t they should be squashing 4 people onto what should be a 3 seater bench but the scenery and the breathtaking beauty of the area definitely makes up for it. You can book a Gold Class Cabin which I think would be more comfortable but it is $99 per person which is a little bit excessive. It’s an amazing day out and you can save some money by skipping the hotel transfer ($120 with or $179 without) it would have been more value for money if the driver provided some information about the area he was driving through but minor issue. Absolutely incredible day out and by far the best tour I’ve ever been on

Fantastic experience: We did the Daintree / Cape Trib / Mossman Gorge tour and Daniel was our guide. He was amazing! Full of knowledge and jokes to keep us informed, yet laughing the whole day. Beautiful locations and lots of gorgeous photo opportunities! Leaving from Cairns makes it a long day so if you have the choice, book from Port Douglas!

Fantastic experience: Fantastic tour with a great driver and guide - thanks Tony. We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel. I recommend tours if you're in the Cairns area as they are informative, cost effective and you can relax to and from in a great big bus.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I experienced the Kuranda rail and Skyway and the Cape Tribulation tours. Both were handled in a very professional and caring manner. The Cape Tribulation tour started out well and got better as the day went on. People were missing from pickup, but the driver handled it all with ease. Daniel was our driver/guide and his sense of humour coupled with extensive environmental knowledge greatly enhanced the tour. We have been on tours all around the world and this was as good as the best, if not the best. Thanks Daniel.

Fantastic experience: Great touring company for an excellent reef experience! The crew were helpful and friendly, the boat was secure (the number of head counts and checks on equipment were impressive), and the locations and time on the reef were great.

Fantastic experience: Our bus driver Paul he is the best tourist guy we had. Not only he had great sense of humor but also he is very considerate he dropped off at hotel front because of rainy day.

Fantastic experience: First trip to Cairns and I can't rate them highly enough. From the first phone call to enquire to the final door to door drop off, there was not one hitch in the whole day. Efficient, friendly staff and comfortable transport.

Fantastic experience: Great tour to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation had a wonderful tour guide in Bridget would recommend do it

Fantastic experience: Great experience with them. Our tour guide/ driver of the bus Peter was such a fun person. He is hilarious and made sure everyone was comfortable and not stressed . Highly recommended!!

Fantastic experience: We have just finished the Cape Tribulation, Daintree and Mossman Gorge tour with Down Under Tours. It was an awesome day, even though the weather was not friendly. Our tour guide and driver Scott was excellent at is job and was very informative through out the whole day, his dad jokes were really funny as well. He was also very good at working with the rain during the day. The whole day went like clockwork and was very well organised. Morning tea and lunch were very nice indeed and so was the ice cream before the trip back to our accommodation. Even though the weather wasn't the best all the spots we went to the scenery was amazing. This tour was very good value for money and I would have no hesitation in recommending Down Under Tours. Thankyou very much Scott for a wonderful day indeed.

Fantastic experience: Just been on the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation tour , it was. Fabulous experience Scott the driver very informative and funny ,sorted everything out during the day, couldn’t have looked after everyone any better. Food supplied during the day fantastic. Ps Chris on boat also brilliant. Cathy and Wayne Shaw UK

Fantastic experience: We did the Mossman Gorge, Cape Tribulation and Daintree Rainforest trip with Down Under Tours and the experience was great. Greg was our tour guide and he was friendly, knowledgeable and approached the day with a great sense of humour. The tour was well organised and scheduled, allowing time at each place to explore a little before moving on. Being on the bus with the large windows allowed you to see the rainforest travelling in and out. Greg's commentary was informative and we really enjoyed being on his bus!

Fantastic experience: Daniel our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the local fauna and flora and animals. Well-paced walks, delicious morning tea, lunch and local Daintree icecream as our final treat! Very enjoyable tour made more so by Daniel's skills and ability to relate to everyone! High recommended!

Fantastic experience: My partner and I did the Kuranda tour! They provided us a transfers, ticket for Skyrail and the Kuranda Train. We had the best day in Kuranda. Everything was so peaceful and perfect❤️ We could do our own things and visit wherever we wanted to go in Kuranda. The freedom we had! Oh the best feelings!! Really enjoyed our day! Our bus driver was such a friendly person and gave us some tips when we go on a Skyrail Highly recommended!!

Fantastic experience: Had an amazing day travelling on the Skyrail and Kuranda Train. Tony our bus driver was very pleasant, informative and entertaining. He gave us very clear instructions about our trip and where to meet him for the return bus trip home. Very impressed. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: It was amazing! Highly recommended day tours while you are visiting Cairns.

Fantastic experience: We went on the Daintree Dreaming Tour and loved it. Bridget, our tour guide was extremely informative, knowledgeable and personable. A pleasure to spend the day with. Our 14 year old teenager was totally engaged all day and had a great time. We highly recommend this tour.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic tour with a great driver and guide - thanks, Uta. We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel far from the city. I recommend tours if you're in the Cairns area as they are informative, cost-effective, and you can relax to and from a great bus with AC services. Ice cream, great Lunch in a Heritage hotel. Uta, you are the best, thank you Down Under Tours Australia

Fantastic experience: Positive: Professionalism , Quality , Value Service: Group tours

Fantastic experience: Couldn't fault it! We booked down under tours for our trip to Mosman Gorge, Daintree rain forest and cape tribulation (full day trip) our guide Daniel was superb all day long!! Super knowledgeable and new to his audience. There was a large age difference on our tour yet Daniel entertained everyone! From his David Attenborough impersonation (which had everyone laughing) to his expert knowledge about the wildlife and rainforest. Truly a wonderful trip for all to enjoy. The day flowed without any hitches and was very well organised. Highly recommend. Daniel really made the tour. 'Our people make the difference ' is their slogan and Daniel definitely does!

Fantastic experience: Positive: Professionalism , Quality , Responsiveness , Value

Fantastic experience: Positive: Professionalism , Punctuality , Quality , Value Service: Group tours

Fantastic experience: We had a tour organised and to be delivered through Down Under Tours Australia. We called to confirm and were informed that they weren't running that day. Bec who we spoke to was fantastic and managed to keep our booking and we drove ourselves. She was incredibly helpful and really nice. Even though this tour was not booked directly it was still able to happen. Down Under Tours Australia are awesome.

Fantastic experience: Just completed the Cape Tribulation and Daintree Rainforest 1 day experience . Daniel our guide and driver was absolutely exceptional . Could not recommended him and the tour highly enough . He was professional and informative . Tour bus was excellent and complementary morning coffee and scones together with complementary afternoon ice cream a real bonus

Fantastic experience: Daniel our tour guide for the day was phenomenal! He is filled with so much knowledge! He was funny too! I learned so much. The lunch we had was good, and I loved the stop for Daintree ice cream. Jaden the guide on the river was great as well, he made special efforts to make sure both sides of the boat could see what he was showing us, we even spotted a croc! The bus was very comfy and cool (in the back anyway) I would highly recommend this tour!

Fantastic experience: I was recently tour leading a group of 21 Probus friends in Cairns. I want to thank Down Under Tours for all their transfers, their friendly drivers always on time and nothing was a problem. Our earliest pickup at the Pullman hotel was 5.30am and again everything ran like clockwork Well Done and a very big thank you.

I f you're considering a trip to Australia, you'll likely find something fun for everyone to explore. Maybe you enjoy catching waves, rays at beautiful beaches or a good barbecue. Maybe you're an adventure seeker, and want to dive the Great Barrier Reef or hold a cuddly koala. Australia is an ideal place to check off these bucket list items.

Before you go, there are things you should know.

Australia is a lovely vacation destination, but make sure to plan with plenty of time to spare. Australia is large, and you'll likely have to jump on an expensive plane ride to get from one city to another. Additionally, multi-day road trips are also an option.

Learn more about Australia below.

  • "Chips" are fries
  • "Barbie" is a barbecue

  • "Bathers" are bathing suits
  • "Yous" is the plural of "you"

In Australia, the summer months are December to February. If you are visiting during those months, make sure to pack extra sun protection since the sun will be blaring hot.

5 TIPS FOR FAMILY TRAVEL THAT COULD MAKE THE EXPERIENCE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER AND MUCH MORE MEMORABLE

When taking a dip in the fresh water at one of Australia's gorgeous beaches, make sure to pay attention to swim only signage between the flags marking a safe swimming area.

Australia has one of the highest rates of shark attacks in the world. That being said, the likelihood of a fatal shark attack occurring is rare, but it is still important to keep safety practices in mind.

Swimming at patrolled beaches can help keep you safe on your vacation. Beaches in Australia that are safe for swimming are marked with red and yellow flags.

Australia is a large country, and you won't be able to hit all the popular cities without hopping on a plane, or designating days to driving. For example, if you want to visit Sydney and Cairns, expect nearly a three and a half hour plane ride from point A to point B.

HEALTHY EATING ON VACATION: HOW TO MANAGE DIET AND AVOID OVERINDULGENCE, ACCORDING TO EXPERTS

Also keep in mind that plane fairs in Australia can get very pricey, so flying from place to place may not be affordable.

Plan ahead so to avoid breaking the bank while also seeing plenty of Australia.

In Australia, a package of cigarettes costs around $40 on average.

Additionally, the packaging of cigarettes looks a lot different in the country. In Australia, "plain packaging" is used. This means that marking and advertising is removed, but the health warnings remain on the box. Packages also feature graphic anti-smoking photos that display the dangers of cigarettes.

Popular sites in Sydney are the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge. In addition, Sydney is home to popular beaches, including Bondi Beach, Manly and Coogee.

Kangaroo Island

Australia is known for its unique wildlife, so it's common for travelers to squeeze a wildlife adventure into their vacation.

If you want to see the marsupials of Australia, Kangaroo Island is a perfect stop. Here, you'll find echidnas, koalas and kangaroos.

Tongan girls make history with under-16s rugby league trip to Australia

By Penina Momoisea

A group of girls wearing Tongan jerseys smile at the camera.

  • X (formerly Twitter)

A group of Tongan girls have made history by becoming the island kingdom's first schoolgirl rugby league team to embark on an overseas tour after they touched down in Australia.

The under-16s girls and boys teams travelled to Brisbane and Sydney on a two-week secondary school rugby league tour.

It's a huge step for a country where, in 2018, Tonga's Ministry of Education and Training initially issued an edict banning girls and women from playing contact sport to "preserve the dignity of Tongan women and hold on to Tongan cultural values".

NRL Tonga's game development manager, Tavake Fangupo, said while Tonga was still a very culturally sensitive country when it came to women playing contact sports like rugby and rugby league, mindsets were slowly changing.

"In 2023, we only had a handful of schools participating in our competition. In 2024, school participation increased when we launched the first secondary schoolgirls under-16s rugby league tour," he said.

The majority of the girls have only been playing league for the past two years and, for more than 90 per cent of the team, it was also their first time on a plane when they flew to Sydney.

A man standing on a field holds a football, smiling and looking to the right.

Since arriving, they've experienced the under-19s State of Origin matches and had the opportunity to tour the NSW Centre of Excellence.

"I'm very excited for girls playing rugby league in Tonga, especially now with NRLW being professional, it's another opportunity and pathway for girls from Tonga to be a part of," Mr Fangupo said.

Mr Fangupo has long recognised the importance of opportunities like these for homegrown local talent and said that, off the back of the Rugby League World Cup in 2017 and the success of Mate Ma'a Tonga, there was a huge increase in junior rugby league participation the following year at both schools and clubs.

"I realised living in Tonga how talented these kids were, and so I came up with an idea of how to showcase this local talent overseas to help them look for further opportunities," Mr Fangupo said.

"I met with local sponsors in Tonga and explained the vision and pathways for the future of our kids and how we could work together to further develop their rugby league talent, both locally and overseas."

From there, Mr Fangupo contacted overseas organisations involved in rugby league who assisted him with his idea and vision to bring the project into reality.

The goal was to give local kids in Tonga pathways and an opportunity to potentially secure a fully paid scholarship in New Zealand or Australia to help them further develop their talent through rugby league.

"It would also help them further their education outside of sport, and scholarships would also take the financial burden from mums and dads still living in Tonga", Mr Fangupo added.

This year, the boys are back and based in Brisbane. They took on Keebra State High School, going down to the elite rugby league school 24-0 on Monday afternoon. They will play Marsden State High School and the Redcliffe Dolphins NRL U16s over the next two weeks.

Head Coach Pita Vakautakakala confirmed that another two scholarships were on offer with the NRL Dolphins for another two boys on this year's tour, with clubs and scouting agents also coming to check out the talent on display.

The Tongan girls played the Maori NSW on Saturday and came away with a win in the last few minutes of the game. The final score was 24–16.

The girls go on to play St George Under-16 girls on Wednesday at 5:00pm at Bexley Oval and the Indigenous U16 Rugby League NSW girls later in the week.

Jet Lag

SPOILER ALERT:  This interview contains spoilers from the Season 10 finale of “ Jet Lag : The Game,” now streaming on  Nebula .

“ Jet Lag: The Game ” dropped its Season 10 finale Wednesday on Nebula, featuring the epic conclusion to the Down Under saga of the travel game show and the presentation of a cartoon-kangaroo-balloon-shaped trophy to either Adam Chase and Ben Doyle or Sam Denby and two-time guest player Toby Hendy.

Ben and Adam – can you break down losing the “Desert Power” and the moment you realized you weren’t going to win?

BEN DOYLE: Oh, it was devastating. I think some people might think we just edited it this way, but we were literally certain that we were going to win the game until the last, like, half hour.

ADAM CHASE: We entered the day with so much Desert Power. And we really thought the only thing that would prevent us from winning is if we didn’t make our flights. Which as you saw, we did have a ton of trouble with. The flight we’d planned on taking was sold out, so we never made it to the Canberra-New South Wales border the way we’d intended. But when we managed to pull off the connection via Sydney to Melbourne, we were confident we had won. It was wild to go, in a single moment, from basically 100% confidence that we would win, to 100% knowledge that we had lost. It turned out that while we did have a lot of Desert Power, we had, in fact, not been able to see all possible futures.

Sam, explain the discovery of the Gold Coast Airport’s border location during the gameplay vs. in prep for the game?

SAM DENBY: In prepping for this season, none of us had ever really considered the possibility that there could be incentive to go to anywhere but the largest cities in each region—partially because the ability to deposit budget anywhere in a region was a last-minute change. Originally, we had designed the game so that you had to go to the challenge board first before depositing budget. So with the ability to deposit budget anywhere, there’s therefore more incentive to be right on a region border, but I don’t think any of us could have guessed that there’d be a major airport literally bisected by the border. As soon as Toby mentioned that to be on day one I knew we had a leg-up since I was also pretty sure that Ben and Adam didn’t know about “the Gold Coast hack.” This really gave us an advantage on the last day both by having a winning strategy that was not very dependent on tight flight connections and by having one that would keep Ben and Adam thinking they were winning, and therefore potentially keeping them a bit off their game, until the last minute.

What “wins” from challenges are you most proud of from Season 10?

CHASE: I think mine are obvious, which are hitting the bogey at Alice Springs Golf Course on the first hole, and getting the waiting 30 minutes challenge to within the second. Both of those, I think, were especially satisfying because one, they were big gambles we pretty much needed to win, and two, because Ben simply did not think I could do either of them. Ben was kind of a Chani figure—he did not believe that I was the Lisan Al-Gaib, and that I could accumulate quite that much Desert Power. But to his credit, he was willing to trust me when I asked him to.

DOYLE: I was so ready to lose a thousand dollars.

CHASE: It was also fun to read comments of people as they were watching the episode, because the nearly universal reaction, especially to the choice to wager $1,000 on “Wait 30 Minutes,” was “Adam is incredibly overconfident on this, it’s a huge mistake, and it’s going to ruin their game” and I enjoyed waiting a few minutes for them to see how it played out.

One last thing I’ll mention is that many people pointed out that the key to my success was that I walked at an extremely consistent rhythm, which is famously what attracts sand worms. So I was kind of doing the opposite of a sand walk. Which maybe explains why the following day we were kind of eaten by the giant sand worm that was Sam and Toby’s strategy.

DOYLE: I think for me, my wins were emotional support wins. So I also take credit for everything that Adam just said. And the Tim Tam! That was hard, right?

And then right from there we went to the portrait gallery, where we were sure we’d find a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, considering she was also the Queen of Australia, but she was nowhere to be found and all the portraits were of rather niche people. But Toby accurately guessed that the Australian audience would accurately identify former Olympian Cathy Freeman. So this back-to-back sequence felt like a big win considering it absolutely was not a given.

What did you discover about the mechanics of the gambling gameplay during the season and how it affected the choices you made in challenges and steals?

CHASE: The more we’ve designed games, the more we’ve realized that what makes challenges compelling is stakes. In many seasons, we’ve had challenges that couldn’t be failed, and sometimes the only stakes were, like, will it take them 10 minutes to do this, or 20 minutes—which sometimes, depending on the game, that 10 minutes was significant enough to give it stakes, but certainly there were many times when it wasn’t.

What was nice about the gambling was it gave each challenge clear stakes—if you fail, you will lose the money you’ve wagered. It also meant that, because each challenge was a risk, there was much less incentive to just grind through as many challenges as possible—which is another thing we really focus on in game design, is reducing the incentive to grind challenges, just because that gets boring. We tend to want a gameplay loop of do some travel, do some challenges, some travel, some challenges, so on.

The final thing we thought it did nicely was allow for big swings in the game. Teams could suddenly gain a lot of money or lose a lot of money, and you saw that—who had more money, and arguably who was in the lead, was frequently changing, which to us is another mark of a well-designed game.

There were two key things about steals, which were both made possible by the fact that steals risked a fixed percentage of your money to take a fixed percentage of the opponent’s money. One is that it encouraged teams to keep their balances relatively low. I think that without steals, teams would have had too much incentive to just spend the first two or three days building up a crazy balance, probably not traveling very much, and then at the end, just fly around and deposit. Which obviously still happened to a certain extent, but would have happened to a much greater extent otherwise.

The second thing steals did—and this ended up being less relevant than it might have been if things played out differently—is that they offered a way for teams that were far behind to catch back up. If I have $10 and you have $10,000, a 50% steal risks $5 for me, and I might win $5,000 from you. We call those game mechanics “Blue Shells,” and they’re really important for making the game remains competitive, and thus the show stays engaging. And in this game, steals were the key Blue Shell.
