15 Best Day Trips from Tel Aviv

The coastal city of Tel Aviv is Israel’s effortlessly chic cosmopolitan destination for those looking to catch some rays, indulge in the mouth watering foodie scene, or hit the shops.

The gorgeous beaches alongside the metropolitan comforts of a thriving city make it a world-class destination for visitors.

It’s a hotbed of local culture, where you can find just about anything to keep you entertained.

From UNESCO recognized architecture throughout the city to bustling markets and boutique museums, there’s weeks worth of entertainment.

However, it goes without saying that the true cultural gems are scattered around the coastline, countryside, and deserts around Tel Aviv.

The density and caliber of historical sites in the area is astounding and the opportunity to explore beautiful ruins, mountains and coastal marvels is unmatched.

Let’s have a look at 15 of the best day trips from the popular Israeli city.

1. Jerusalem

Jerusalem

Without a doubt one of the most fascinating destinations in the country, Jerusalem is the cultural capital of Israel, as well as the official one.

In less than an hour from Tel Aviv, you can find yourself immersed in the intense and fascinating history of the city’s holy sites, like Temple Mount and the Garden Tomb.

Marvel at the diversity of the Old City as you walk between the Christian and Muslim Quarters, each offering their own delicious street food and distinctive architecture.

Here, you can also lose yourself among some of the best markets in the country; the most popular of which is the bustling Machane Yehuda Market.

Great combo tour : Jerusalem and Bethlehem: Full-Day Trip from Tel Aviv

Akko, Israel

The famous Old City of Akko has stood for an incredibly long time, and during this time has been occupied by many different cultures.

From Crusader to Byzantine rulers, a huge number of historical factions have contributed to the story of Akko.

It also happens to be captivatingly beautiful – perched on the coast by the Mediterranean Sea and comprised of pretty, cobbled streets and quaint squares.

As with many worthwhile destinations in Israel, you’ll have the chance to visit colorful markets as well as Arabic shuks, while food comes in the mouth-watering form of fresh fish and world-class hummus locales.

Best value tour : Caesarea, Haifa & Akko Day Trip from Tel Aviv

Haifa, Israel

Another famed and incredibly popular coastal gem to the north of Tel Aviv, Haifa is a diverse mix of gorgeous beaches, thriving nightlife, and cultural diversity.

One of the main attractions is the jaw-dropping Bahai Gardens, a veritable oasis of tropical vegetation that boasts UNESCO Heritage site status and attracts millions of followers of the Bahai religion every year.

Lose yourself amongst the treasure troves of the flea market or spoil yourself with the irresistible combination of Israeli, Arabic and even German street food, each found within the distinct Quarters.

Included in : Caesarea, Haifa & Akko Day Trip from Tel Aviv

Petra, Israel

The city of Petra is an ancient site that is thought to have been built as early as 500 BC, making it an astronomically old – not to mention fascinating – trip from Tel Aviv; although it’s a little further than most others so you might want to consider an overnight stay.

The rose city is built of multi-colored sandstone and houses staggeringly beautiful gorges known as Al Siq, as well as Egyptian-influenced obelisks golden treasuries.

The highlight is the monumental entrance to Petra, the beautiful Al-Khazneh doorway.

A day trip to Petra is filled with history, beauty, and fascinating sights, so make sure to allot plenty of time to this destination.

Available tour : Petra, Jerash and Amman: 2-Day Tour From Tel Aviv

5. Masada, The Dead Sea, and Ein Gedi

Masada, Israel

Three stunning sites that can all be seen in the space of a single day trip, the ruins of Masada, the Dead Sea and Ein Gedi are all enchanting destinations that can be found to the east of Tel Aviv.

Start your journey with a scenic drive through the awesome Judean Desert before embarking on a cable car that’ll take you to the ruins of King Herod’s Palace at the summit of Mount Masada.

Then, wander through the captivating oasis of the Ein Gedi Reserve, complete with cascading waterfalls, lush vegetation, and pleasantly shaded cave pools.

Finally, cool off in the nutrient-rich waters of the Dead Sea and experience the restorative properties of the world-famous mud baths found there.

You’ll leave feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and buzzing from all the incredible things you’ve seen.

Suggested tour : Masada & Dead Sea Tour: Full-Day from Tel Aviv

6. Zichron Ya’akov

Zichron Ya’akov

One of the top destinations in the country for wine enthusiasts, Zichron Ya’akov is a thriving tourist settlement near Haifa, and boasts a variety of spectacular wineries, including the famed Carmel Winery.

As well as sumptuous vintages, the town offers gorgeous views of the Mediterranean coast and all manner of tempting cafes and restaurants on the pedestrianized main street in the middle of town.

It’s a fantastic place to step it down a notch, slow things down and take time to enjoy some amazing wine with even more amazing views.

7. Caesarea

Caesarea, Isreal

As its name might suggest, the town of Caesarea was built by the Romans, and as such, is a hotbed of cultural sites that date back to the Roman Empire.

Here you’ll find one of the largest amphitheaters they ever built, amongst the markets and harbors of the ancient settlement.

Its location on the Israeli coast to the north of Tel Aviv made it a historical trade center for the Romans.

Archaeologists and divers are constantly unearthing fascinating finds in the turquoise waters around Caesarea’s pretty shoreline.

Recommended tour : Caesarea, Haifa & Akko Day Trip from Tel Aviv

8. Rosh Hanikra

Rosh Hanikra Grottoes

Further north than Caesarea and even Haifa, Rosh Hanikra is the furthest reachable point on the Israeli Mediterranean coastline.

It’s an incredibly popular geological attraction comprised of sandstone gorges and cave pools, complete with idyllic waterfalls trickling down the stone faces.

You can also take a cable car to the top of the rock faces and enjoy unique views of the shockingly clear Mediterranean waters below.

Galilee, Israel

The region of Galilee is one of the most historically religious areas in the whole of Israel, host to a number of unmissable sites that played important roles in the life of Jesus Christ.

Here you’ll find Nazareth, where he spent his childhood and where you can visit the beautiful Church of Annunciation.

You’ll also have the chance to explore beautiful areas like the Mount of Beatitudes and the gorgeous Sea of Galilee.

Recommended tour : Nazareth, Tiberias & Sea of Galilee Day Trip from Tel Aviv

10. Tiberias

Tiberias, Israel

Found on the western shores of the Sea of Galilee, Tiberias deserves an entire day trip to itself, thanks to the fascinating and sometimes contradictory blend of religion, kitschy architecture and beautiful natural surroundings.

Recognised as one of Judaism’s four holy cities, Tiberias is popular amongst tourists and devoted locals, though high rise buildings constructed in the 70’s detract from the beauty of the waterfront.

Just outside of town, you’ll find the gorgeous and irresistible hot springs of Hamei Tveria.

11. Bethlehem

Bethlehem

Located on the West Bank, Bethlehem is widely revered as one of the most important places in the story of the Bible, and also as the birthplace of Jesus.

The stunning Church of Nativity is the go-to place if you’re interested in learning more of the story, while history buffs can also explore Greek Orthodox and Catholic churches at their leisure.

You’ll have the chance to lay your eyes on Shepherd’s Field, another famous location from the Bible, as well as Manger Square, thought to have been where Jesus’ Manger was placed.

Available tour : Jerusalem and Bethlehem: Full-Day Trip from Tel Aviv

12. Jericho

Jericho

Though it’s in the Palestinian Territories, Jericho is a mere couple of hours from Tel Aviv by bus and claims to be the oldest inhabited city in the entire world.

With a claim like that, you can imagine that the sense of history here is incomparable – and you’d be right.

Some artifacts and buildings date as far back as 10,000 BC! From majestic monasteries to the impressive rock faces of the Judean Mountains, the perfect blend of timeless history and awe-inspiring nature to be found in Jericho makes it a hugely worthwhile day trip.

Available tour : Half Day Jericho Tour from Jerusalem

Jaffa

Also hailing back to biblical times and even beyond, Jaffa is one of the world’s oldest ports and couldn’t be easier to reach from Tel Aviv, as it resides only slightly to the south of the city.

Jaffa is the epitome of an Old Town, whose charm has been met with an exciting modern influx of varying cultures, resulting in an intriguing place to visit.

Bustling markets are filled with Arab and Jewish Israeli’s and ancient buildings stand shoulder to shoulder with hot new nightlife venues and restaurants.

Be sure to pay a visit if you’re looking for a smaller, more intimate version of Tel Aviv.

Suggested tour : Old Jaffa & Tel Aviv Segway Tour

14. Golan Heights

Hula Valley And Mount Hermon

Found near the Sea of Galilee and offering incredible views of the Hula Valley, the Golan Heights is an enchanting expanse of lush, waterside farmland punctuated by gorgeous rolling hills blanketed with wildflowers.

Here, you’ll find everything from cattle ranches to vineyards – the communities that live here are famed for their welcoming nature.

Spend the day hiking around the foothills or sampling wine around the Golan plateau.

15. Herzliya

Herzliya

Another must-see destination that is incredibly convenient to get to from Tel Aviv is the beautiful city of Herzliya.

A mere 20-minutes drive away, the city is a popular weekend destination for beach lovers and those who want a more exclusive, intimate vibe than offered in busy Tel Aviv.

The white sands found at beaches like Accadia Beach offer luxury bars and some world class surf breaks, while Herzliya city itself is home to irresistible shopping and renowned for its nightlife.

The 10 Best Day Trips from Tel Aviv

Enjoy the Sea of Galilee on a day trip from Tel Aviv

Israel writer

Escape the city and explore the many other sights Israel has to offer, from crusader fortresses in the lush countryside to arid desert landscapes.

There is far more to Israel than Tel Aviv – one of the great things about the country is its size, which makes most areas accessible by day trips. Whether you want to explore what is said to be Jesus’s childhood town, take in spectacular monasteries built into desert cliffs, or simply enjoy beautiful beaches without the Tel Aviv crowds, there’s something for you.

1. Masada, Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea

Natural Feature, Historical Landmark

Scenic View Of Cliff By Sea Against Sky

These three sites are stunning in their own right, and can all be enjoyed in one day. We recommend going on a tour that will take you to the foot of Masada , an ancient fortress from the Roman times with an iconic place in Jewish folklore. A cable car will take you to the top (it’s also possible to hike), where you can explore the remains of the site and take in the panoramic views of the desert and Dead Sea. A short drive away is Ein Gedi, a nature reserve with an abundance of waterfalls and wildlife that you should explore before continuing to the Dead Sea, where you can float in the water and get a natural skin treatment from the mineral-rich mud.

2. Ma’agan Michael Kibbutz

Historical Landmark

Israel is famous for its kibbutzim , which are an indelible part of the country’s history and reflect its socialist roots. Kibbutz Ma’agan Michael is a short drive north of Tel Aviv and one of the most beautiful kibbutzim in the country. On this tour, you’ll learn about the kibbutz concept and its history, with a resident introducing you to the unique lifestyle of the collective community.

3. Nazareth, Tiberias, and the Sea of Galilee

Basilica of The Annunciation, the upper church

This day trip up north encompasses holy sites, delicious street food, and spectacular views. Nazareth is Israel’s largest Arab-Israeli city and what is believed to be the childhood home of Jesus: check out the Church of the Annunciation and Church of St Joseph. Popular among foodies, it also boasts several excellent hummus and arayes (kebab in a grilled pita bread) joints. Continue through the village of Kafer Kana, where Jesus is said to have performed the miracle of wine, and arrive at the Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Kinneret, which is the country’s largest freshwater lake. Here you’ll find the remains of a synagogue that Jesus is said to have taught in, among other religious sites. The final destination is Tiberias, a holy city for Jews perched on the shore of the Sea of Galilee .

4. Jerusalem's Old City

Jerusalem

Under an hour away from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem’s Old City is a must-visit. Explore the holy city with a knowledgeable guide who will lead you through a timeline of history and the ancient, cobblestone streets of its four quarters – Jewish , Muslim, Armenian and Christian – and soak up the unique atmosphere of each. Marvel at the sweeping views of the city below at the Mount of Olives and visit landmarks such as the Dome of the Rock, Wailing Wall and Temple Mount. See the site where Jesus is thought to have resurrected, and where he is believed to be buried. Step back in time – some 4,000 years – to uncover archaeological secrets such as Jerusalem’s first palace and its Canaanite water system.

5. Zichron Ya’akov

Shop, Shopping Mall, Museum, Winery

Wine Grape Harvest

Nestled in the picturesque countryside in Israel’s northern Mount Carmel, about an hour from Tel Aviv by train or car, Zichron Ya’akov is a perfect spot to escape the bustle of Tel Aviv. A town known for its wine production, a day here must include a visit to the Carmel Winery. The town’s pedestrianised main street is lined with cafés and artsy stores, and a stroll along here should also make it onto your itinerary. History buffs will be interested to check out the First Aliyah Museum to learn about the town’s founders – a group of 100 Romanian Zionist pioneers who arrived in 1882.

6. Jericho and the Judean Desert

Historical Landmark, Natural Feature

Judean desert

Head to the wilderness of the Judean Desert near Jerusalem and explore its spectacular biblical landscapes. After a drive through the desert visit the 16th-century Ottoman building, the Good Samaritan Inn, which pays tribute to the samaritan who is said to have helped Jesus. Then venture to the marvellous city of Jericho, where 12,000 years of history and culture have lived. See where it is believed Jesus was tempted by the devil at the Mount of Temptation, and admire the iconic Zacheus’s Sycamore tree.

7. Akko and Rosh HaNikra

Historical Landmark, Market

Akko Old City

Akko (or Acre) is home to an enchanting Old City that combines layers of history, legendary hummus , and a vibrant shuk . The city is encircled by remarkably intact Crusader Walls, within which lie an array of sites: head underground to the 350-metre-long (1,150-foot-long) Templar’s Tunnel, built by the Templars who settled in Akko in 1187; wander through the market and the restored Turkish Bazaar, buying souvenirs, spices, and snacks along the way; and stop off for lunch at Hummus Said, a famous generations-old joint. Jump back into the car for a short drive to Rosh HaNikra, near the border with Lebanon, where you’ll find one of the most unique sites in Israel: its stunning naturally formed grottoes, or sea caves.

8. Golan Heights

Castle Nimrod

The Golan Heights offers a great city escape with its combination of lush greenery, natural springs, and ancient sites. Some of the most beautiful spots in Israel can be found here, from the Banias Waterfall to Mount Bental, whose summit overlooks Israel’s Galilee region and into Syria. Hikers should not miss Nimrod Fortress , located in the northern part of the region, which is the biggest crusader fortress in the country that blends into the rugged mountains. On the southern side lies the Hamat Gader hot springs, which have been enjoyed by humans for thousands of years. The best way to explore the Golan is by car or on a tour.

9. Herzilya

Natural Feature, Building

Panoramic view of Mediterranean beach

Tel Aviv’s beaches are packed with people on weekends, but just a short drive north, in Herzilya, lies even more idyllic beaches without the crowds. Sidna Ali (also known as Nof Yam) is arguably the pick of the bunch, with its pristine sands and surrounding cliff formations. Here you’ll also find a quirky house carved in the rock, known as Nissim the Caveman’s house. For sunset, head up to the Cliff Spot, adjacent to the Sidna Ali Mosque, for stunning views.

10. Judean Desert Safari and Dead Sea Visit

Floating In Sea Against Blue Sky

The Dead Sea is home to the lowest elevation of land on the planet, and although it’s called the Dead Sea, it’s actually a saltwater lake. Take a 10-hour expedition in a 4WD jeep into the Judean Desert and admire the ancient city of Jericho from a distance. Float in the Dead Sea and soak up the therapeutic benefits of the surrounding black mud.

My Day Trip to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv

day trip jerusalem from tel aviv

After several trips to the incredible city of Tel Aviv last year, I finally had the chance to visit Jerusalem for the day in December last year – somewhere I had always wanted to visit.  I knew many people who had already done a day trip from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem but they had always booked an excursion which is something I did not want to do. Thankfully friends who I’ve known for years asked if I wanted to go to Jerusalem with them for the day and as one of them used to live in Israel and had visited Jerusalem before, I jumped at the chance. We knew we could not do everything in Jerusalem in one day but between us, there was a few places that we all wanted to see in the city which allowed us to have a relaxed and enjoyable day with no schedule. To be able to get to Jerusalem at a decent time, I had to set my alarm clock for 6:30am after only getting to my hotel just before midnight the evening before. I felt tired but the excitement of the day ahead got me out of bed – and the sight of a beautiful sunrise over Tel Aviv helped too.  After having a shower and getting dressed, I was the first person in the hotel restaurant for a quick breakfast – Israeli breakfasts are incredible and I would never miss an opportunity to have one. After meeting my friends in the hotel lobby, we walked to a nearby bus stop to take the bus to Herzliya train station where we were going to take the train into Tel Aviv. Once we were at the station a few minutes later, we all bought Rav Kav transportation cards from the ticket desk with a return fare to Jerusalem on them which cost NIS37.50 which worked out to £8.50 / US$11 which is an absolute bargain as some of those organised tours that I’ve seen people take to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv cost over £100! We caught the next train to Tel Aviv HaHagana Station which took twenty minutes and once there, we simply walked to the opposite platform where the new high speed train to Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon Station was departing from. The journey time to Jerusalem is only thirty five minutes and the train makes one stop at Ben Gurion Airport and we arrived into Jerusalem at 9:30am. I could not believe how quick the train was – it really is the best way to travel between the two cities.

Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon Station is located three kilometres from the Old City and even though we could have taken the light rail train, we decided to walk. It was a beautiful morning and we wanted to walk through and explore the sights, sounds, colours and smells of the Mahane Yehuda Market before having a coffee to start the day properly.

After exploring the market and stopping for a coffee and a delicious pastry, we continued walking along Jaffa Street towards the Old City. Having this relaxed start to the day was a wonderful way to finally get to see Jerusalem. We reached Jaffa Gate just before 11:00am and slowly walked through the Christian Quarter and Muslim Quarter towards the Jewish Quarter as the Western Wall was one of the places that we all wanted to visit. One of my favourite parts of the Old City of Jerusalem was walking through the tiny streets and alleyways and never knowing what you would find around each corner. The Old City is small and it does not take long to walk around and all of the major sights are signposted so it is very difficult to get lost.

The Jewish Quarter was quiet and we walked through the Cardo which was the main street in the city during ancient Roman and Byzantine times. It has since been excavated and restored and there are shops, galleries as well as ruins to see.

Once outside, we stopped to take photos of the beautiful Hurva Synagogue which became known as the Ruin Synagogue after being destroyed and rebuilt several times. We noticed people on the roof terrace taking photos so we went to see if it was possible to get up there. The price to enter was NIS20 (£4.50 / US$5.80) and after being told the history of the building, we took a lift up to the roof. The view from the roof of the synagogue over the Old City of Jerusalem and towards Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives was amazing and one of my favourite memories of the day. We had no idea this even existed and yet finding places like this is why I love exploring independently so much – you never know what you will find.

After stopping to get a cold drink, our next stop was the Western Wall which is one of the most important sites in the Jewish religion – the wall was part of the Second Temple which was destroyed by the Romans and is the holiest place where Jews are permitted to pray. It is free of charge to visit and you have to go through security to enter the area. There is also a dress code which I had looked up before our visit – shoulders, upper arms and knees need to be covered and men must also cover their heads. The Western Wall is divided into separate sections for both men and women to pray separately. You can also write a prayer on a piece of paper and place it into one of the cracks on the wall – these prayers are never thrown away but buried at the Mount of Olives several times a year. Even though I’m not religious in the slightest, it was a fascinating, special and incredible place to be able to visit – it felt very calm and spiritual.

Our timing was perfect as our next stop was Temple Mount which non-Muslims can only enter from the wooden walkway next to the Western Wall at certain times of the day. During December when we were there, the hours were 7:30am-10:30am and 12:30pm-1:30pm. It is also closed on Fridays and Saturdays and during Muslim holidays. We joined the line to go through security again at 12:40pm and even though the line was long, it moved quickly. You can also get a great view of the Western Wall from the wooden walkway.

Temple Mount is the holiest site in the Jewish religion, the third holiest site in Islam (after Mecca and Medina) and also has significance in Christianity. I’m not even going to try and pretend I understand everything and all the history behind it – the more I read, the more complicated it seems to be. There is a strict dress code to enter Temple Mount and even though my arms and my legs were completely covered, I was stopped and asked to cover my neck and the top of my chest as I was wearing a v-neck t-shirt so one of my friends quickly gave me a scarf which they had in their bag. The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine and I was lucky enough to get some photos with no one else in them due to some incredibly lucky timing. The colours of the shrine looked beautiful in the sunshine and against the bright blue skies.

After visiting Temple Mount, we explored some more of the nearby streets. For lunch we had the name of a restaurant to go to in the Christian Quarter which took us a little while to find as the GPS for Google Maps was struggling due to the lack of 4G coverage in the Old City and even though there is free wifi available, it was very slow. We finally found Lina Hummus restaurant and we shared Pine Nut Hummus, Labneh, Falafel and bread to eat as well as a jug of fresh pomegranate juice to drink which was delicious. The bill came to NIS80 (£18 / US$23) for the three of us.

After lunch we walked along the Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrow) which is said to be where Jesus walked whilst carrying his cross on his way to his crucifixion at Golgotha. There are fourteen stops on the route each representing a significant event on this journey. However if you are expecting it to be a sombre experience, it won’t be due to motorbikes, crowds of people and the sheer amount of tacky souvenir shops lining the way.

At the end of the Via Dolorosa is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where two of the holiest sites in Christianity are located – the spot where Jesus was crucified and the empty tomb from where he resurrected from. Though the latter is also said to have happened at the Garden Tomb which is located outside the walls of the Old City. The entrance is very easy to miss but once inside, it was nuts and there were people everywhere. You can visit the Calvary and queue up to see the hole underneath the altar where the cross is said to have been placed. I decided to look at it myself and even in line, people were pushing and holding up cameras and phones over the shoulders of others even though each person gets their turn to look at it individually. Inside the entrance to the church is the Stone of Anointing where Jesus’s body was laid before his burial and there was also a long line to see his tomb which was not moving. At this point all three of us could not wait to leave the church – it was far too crowded and it felt difficult to breathe. I’ve always thought of churches being calm and peaceful but this definitely was not. It was fascinating to people watch whilst we were here – it was crazy and manic and not always in a good way. I’ve already mentioned that I’m not at all religious but the behaviour of others took away from what should have been a serene experience – trying to constantly duck out of the way to avoid being hit by a bunch of selfie sticks was not fun in the slightest.

After walking around a little more of the Muslim Quarter, we made our way to the Austrian Hospice which was an oasis of calm above the busy streets below and which offers one of the best views of the Old City from its roof terrace which costs NIS5 (£1.10 / US$1.50) to access. After enjoying the views, we ordered a coffee and apple strudel each from their cafe and sat in the garden enjoying the peace and quiet – I’ve read that this is one of the best spots in Jerusalem for a good coffee and it’s definitely true!

After leaving the Austrian Hospice, we were starting to all feel tired so decided to slowly make our way back to Yitzhak Navon Station to head back to Tel Aviv. We left the Old City from the Damascus Gate just as the sun was starting to set. Then in short succession, we heard the call to prayer from the Muslim Quarter, saw Christmas decorations and lights as we walked past the New Gate at the Christian Quarter and then watched on our walk back to the train station as we saw various Menorah being lit to celebrate the first night of Hannukah. It was such a special atmosphere in Jerusalem that evening and it was lovely to see and experience it.

day trip jerusalem from tel aviv

We took the train that left Jerusalem just after 5:30pm and thirty five minutes later we were back in Tel Aviv before only waiting a few minutes for the next train back to Herzilya. I was exhausted but so happy that we had seen as much as we did that short day. I know we only scratched the surface of things to see and do in Jerusalem but it was a great first visit especially as we only had a limited amount of time in Israel. Even though we only spent a few hours in Jerusalem, it is a fascinating city and you could easily spend a couple of days there which I would like to do on my next visit. There’s so many more things I want to see such as the City Walls, the Mount of Olives, the gardens of Gethsemane, Mount Zion as well as crossing the border to Palestine to visit Bethlehem. Delta to resume Tel Aviv service from New York-JFK on Friday

Nonstop daily service resumes June 7 after extensive security risk assessment, as the airline continues to closely monitor the situation in Israel.

day trip jerusalem from tel aviv

Delta will resume daily nonstop service to Tel Aviv (TLV) from New York-JFK this summer, operating the route on an Airbus A330-900neo that will provide customers with nearly 2,000 weekly seats from New York to Israel.

The decision to resume the route on June 7, 2024, which was temporarily suspended in October 2023, follows an extensive security risk assessment by the airline. Delta continues to closely monitor the situation in Israel in conjunction with government and private-sector partners.

In recent months, Delta has strengthened its presence in Israel through a codeshare arrangement with EL AL Israel Airlines. Delta customers have access to EL AL’s direct services to Tel Aviv from major U.S. cities like New York-JFK, New York-Newark, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. With the reinstatement of Delta’s New York-JFK service this summer, customers have additional travel choices connecting North America and Israel.

Delta Air Lines to Resume Service Between JFK and Tel Aviv

Delta Air Lines will resume daily nonstop service between Tel Aviv (TLV) in Israel and New York’s JFK beginning June 7.

The route, which was temporarily suspended in October 2023 due to the region’s conflict , will restart later this week onboard the Airbus A330-900neo.

According to the notice from Delta about the restart, the airline “continues to closely monitor the situation in Israel in conjunction with government and private-sector partners.”

The airline recently joined a codeshare agreement with EL AL Israel Airlines, allowing Delta customers access to EL AL’s direct services to Tel Aviv from large U.S. airports, including New York’s Newark and JFK, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Other airlines have bounced back and forth announcing their resumption of service to Israel, before once again canceling service. United Airlines, for example, announced resumption of service from Florida and New York to Tel Aviv in March and April. Fast forward to early May, and the airline reported it would stop all flights to Tel Aviv until at least June 9 .

Earlier this week, Delta Air Lines reported a high interest in international travel , and predicted record-high second quarter revenue, which is at least partly due to the increased international travel demand.

"Summer's progressing strongly and demand is quite healthy," CEO Ed Bastian said. "Demand is growing faster internationally than it is domestically, and Delta is very well-positioned to take advantage of that with its partners."

Earlier in May, the airline released its biggest update for the Delta app yet: Delta 6.0, which offers a new Help Center design, connection with the airline’s Virtual Assistant, and, coming later this year, the ability to easily connect with Delta Sync Wi-Fi through the app. The app also continues to provide a paperless ticketing option.
