Prepare for HLC Visit

The HLC site visit team will be at UND on April 22-23, 2024, as part of the University’s 10-year reaffirmation process.

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Reaffirmation is extremely important to the future of UND because accreditation ensures quality courses, administration and resources.  Learn how to be prepared for the upcoming HLC visit.

About HLC Visit

Five open forums will be held on April 22 and 23 in connection with the Higher Learning Commission’s site visit to the University of North Dakota, a visit that is an important part of the University’s reaffirmation of accreditation.

These forums will be open to students, staff and faculty and will provide an opportunity to give feedback and discuss each criterion covered in   UND’s written Assurance Argument . The document, a narrative in which the institution explains how it meets the HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation, was submitted to the HLC in March.

Participation in these sessions will help the site visit team learn more about the University and help with the final steps of the once-every-10-years reaffirmation process.

Visit Schedule

Each session will be focused on one of the five criteria . The schedule is listed below. The site visit team requests in-person attendance at these events. However, remote participation will be available for those off-campus.

Also listed on the schedule are drop-in sessions. For the HLC site visit team, these two sessions essentially are office hours and will be open for anyone on campus to stop by and visit. Members of the campus community are invited to introduce themselves and ask questions of the team, as well as talk about UND.

UND will be assessed on five criteria, as evidenced through UND’s Assurance Argument submitted to the HLC in March.

Understand Criteria

How to Prepare

Below are key points for each criterion to help you prepare for conversations with the HLC site visit team.

Criterion 1 | Mission ( Open this section)

The institution’s mission is clear and articulated publicly; it guides the institution’s operations.

  • UND’s mission is: “To provide exceptional educational experiences that enrich the lives of North Dakotans and the global community through excellence in teaching, innovative research, and meaningful engagement.”  It is articulated publicly, operationalized throughout the institution and demonstrates our commitment to the citizens of North Dakota.
  • UND launched its new UND LEADS (Learning, Equity, Affinity, Discovery, Service) Strategic Plan in January 2023, demonstrating our educational role is to serve our students.
  • The UND LEADS Strategic Plan impacts UND’s work by recognizing the importance of enhancing student success by fostering cross-cultural interaction, improving retention and completion rates, and enhancing learning and understanding in the academic realm.

Criterion 2 | Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct ( Open this section)

The institution acts with integrity; its conduct is ethical and responsible.

  • UND adheres to more than 150 North Dakota State Board of Higher Education policies and all applicable federal policies directly related to the responsible acquisition, discovery and application of knowledge by our faculty, staff and students.
  • UND is committed to best practices, in policy and in implementation, related to academic and research honesty and integrity.

Criterion 3 | Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources and Support ( Open this section)

The institution provides quality education, wherever and however its offerings are delivered.

  • UND employs approximately 2,800 staff members, including more than 700 full-time instructional faculty, and hundreds of part-time staff members serving in both administrative and instructional roles. UND has a 17-to-1 student to instructional faculty ratio.
  • Our dedicated faculty and staff members provide services and instruction to our students, conduct original research, and serve the Grand Forks community as well as the State of North Dakota — ensuring that UND provides our students with effective, high-quality educational programs and services.
  • UND provides student support services and support for student learning. Examples of this student support are numerous, and include: UNIV 101 courses, academic advising, the Recruitment/Retention of American Indians into Nursing program, the International Center, Veteran & Military Services, the University Counseling Center, the Wellness Center, One-Stop Student Services, Career Services, TRIO Programs, New Student Orientation, the Writing Center, and the Math Active Learning Lab (MALL) to name just a few.
  • UND assures that our academic instructors are current in their disciplines, adept in their teaching roles and supports their professional development through the Teaching Transformation & Development Academy (TTaDA) .
  • TTaDA provides a wide array of services for faculty, graduate teaching assistants and staff, including training related to diversity and inclusion, book group discussions, both live and recorded training sessions, tutorials, assistance with course design for all delivery methods, and learning and development experiences.
  • TTaDA’s programming also focuses on supporting the UND community as we navigate contemporary pedagogical issues in higher education, such as educating the UND community about the ethical use of generative artificial intelligence.

Criterion 4 | Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and Improvement ( Open this section)

The institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments, and support services, and it evaluates their effectiveness for student learning through processes designed to promote continuous improvement.

  • UND conducts ongoing assessment of student learning as part of our commitment to our students’ educational outcomes. A major part of this process includes annual assessment reporting, including assessment of student learning and achievement of learning goals in both academic and cocurricular programs.
  • UND engages in a systematic program review process, known as Academic Program Review (APR) . This process occurs over a five-year cycle for all UND programs, including both graduate and undergraduate programs. The APR process demonstrates our commitment to the quality and continuous improvement of our educational programs and student success, as well as provides insight into how curriculum, scholarly activity and service advance the University’s mission to serve the state and global community.
  • UND strives to improve retention, persistence and completion rates across all our degree and certificate programs. UND accomplishes this by providing services such as academic advising and tutoring, career services, writing assistance, and assistance with library research for our students – whether they are on campus or online.

Criterion 5 | Institutional Effectiveness, Resources and Planning ( Open this section)

The institution’s resources, structures, and processes are sufficient to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational offerings, and respond to future challenges and opportunities.

  • UND a llocates appropriate resources to align with our mission and priorities and has a robust resource base that supports our educational offerings and plans for maintaining and strengthening their quality in the future.
  • This is evidenced by the support from the S tate of North Dakota (more than $100M annually), our Moody’s bond rating (A1 and Aa3), and the fiscally responsible Model for Incentive-Based Resource Allocation (MIRA) budget model .

Sustainability key to EURO 2024 schedule

Wednesday, June 12, 2024

Article summary

Environmental impact and fairness for each team were the priorities in determining the tournament match schedule.

hlc visit schedule

"Our challenge was to maximise sustainability without compromising fairness."

Marcello Alleca, UEFA head of men's national team competitions

Marcello Alleca, UEFA's head of men's national team competitions

Putting sustainability first

To make the schedule as sustainable as possible, venues and matches have been organised into three regionalised clusters, greatly reducing the amount of travel for teams and fans.

At EURO 2016 in France – comparable in terms of tournament size and country infrastructure – over 75% of team transfers to group stage matches were done by plane. In Germany that figure will drop to 25%, with train or bus transfers the preferred method of transport.

Eight years ago, no team played more than once in any single venue during the group stage. This summer, a total of seven teams – Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Türkiye – will play more than one match in the same stadium.

These criteria also apply to hosts Germany, even though it means not always playing in the biggest stadiums. "Germany chose a team basecamp in the south of the country, to be close to the venues where they play their three group stage games," says Alleca.

The Football Arena Munich will host the opening EURO 2024 match between hosts Germany and Scotland

Planning ahead

"Developing the schedule is still a very manual process," explains Alleca. "There is no computer automation involved. Initially we start with a team of around ten people who all represent different interests that go into organising the schedule. Once we're happy with it, it goes out to host cities and a wider group for consultation." This happens well in advance of the tournament, with final approval of the schedule at least two years before the opening match.

This forward thinking helps Alleca's team ensure the all-important sporting fairness. "We write the schedule before we even know who the teams are; they're just Group A Team 1, Team 2," he explains. "We look at where they're going to play, and then what will happen to the group winners and runners-up – we look at all of their paths through the tournament and how we can be as fair as possible to all of them."

Fair and sustainable – the blueprint for a successful tournament.

Republicans host 'pep rally' with Trump in his first visit to Capitol Hill since Jan. 6 attack

WASHINGTON — Three and a half years ago, President Donald Trump incited a violent riot at the Capitol in a bid to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory and remain in power, a special House committee concluded after a lengthy investigation.

On Thursday, Trump made his first visit to Capitol Hill since before the Jan. 6 attack as Republicans gave a hero’s welcome to their party’s presumptive 2024 nominee.

Less than five months before Trump's rematch with Biden, the closed-door meetings with House and Senate Republicans represented a rare moment of unity for a party that has been engaged in a civil war since Jan. 6.

In the Senate meeting, Trump made peace with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who had blamed Trump for the deadly Capitol riot. The two men had not spoken since December 2020. McConnell said he and Trump shook hands several times Thursday, calling it “a good meeting” and an “entirely positive session."

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., a Trump loyalist, said as he left the House gathering, “It was a pep rally for President Trump.”

With Trump and Biden locked in a competitive race and control of Congress up for grabs this fall, many in the GOP expressed optimism about sweeping the 2024 elections and acting swiftly on Trump’s agenda.

Trump delivered a message about "unity," saying Republicans need to come together to defeat Democrats in November, said a source in his meeting with House Republicans. He offered to do tele-town halls for members facing tough races and stressed that Republicans should not attack one another.

At one point, two sources said, Trump implored a close ally, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., to get along with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., whom she attempted to oust from power .

"Marjorie, are you being nice to Mike?" Trump asked, the sources said, eliciting laughter from House Republicans.

A source who observed Greene's reaction said she made a “sort of” hand gesture, which Greene herself confirmed afterward.

During his talk, Trump jumped from topic to topic, touching on border security and China — "They are ripping us off" — to railing against trans athletes in women's sports.

Minutes after the Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the abortion pill mifepristone, Trump told House Republicans that in the post-Roe-v.-Wade environment, the party needs to talk about abortion correctly, multiple sources said.

He acknowledged that the issue of abortion rights had cost Republicans and that it’s too important to ignore while adding it's now back in the hands of the people and the states — his stated preference. He also voiced support for abortion policy that includes exceptions in cases like rape and incest and to protect the life of the woman.

“We’re the party of common sense” on that and other key issues, Trump told the lawmakers. He did not directly refer to mifepristone or the Supreme Court ruling.

Members in the room had mixed reactions to his abortion riff, the sources said.

Trump also took a shot at Milwaukee, the host city of the Republican National Convention, where Trump will formally accept the GOP presidential nomination. It's planned for July 15 through 18, though Trump may not attend in person .

He called Milwaukee “horrible” and said it was overrun by crime, a source said, adding that no one in the room disagreed with him.

As Trump arrived for his first meeting at the Capitol Hill Club on Thursday morning, a handful of protesters held signs reading things like “Failed Coup” and “Democracy forever, Trump never.” The Democratic National Committee, meanwhile, has set up a mobile billboard that will try to follow Trump between meetings while airing video from the Jan. 6 attack.

Potential running mates and detractors

Thursday's meeting was the first time since the Capitol riot that Trump had been in the same room with McConnell, with Trump's campaign having accused McConnell of "killing the Republican Party through weakness and cowardice" and having gone after McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, with racist attacks.

At the time, McConnell slammed Trump as being “practically and morally responsible for provoking the events” of Jan. 6. He has since endorsed Trump for president — and announced that he will step down as Senate GOP leader after this year.

“I said three years ago right after the Capitol was attacked that I would support our nominee, regardless of who it was — including him. I’ve said earlier this year I support him. He’s earned the nomination by the voters all across the country,” McConnell told reporters Tuesday, without using Trump’s name.

Senators described the handshakes between Trump and McConnell as a unifying moment. "To me, that was some type of reconciliation," said Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind. "There was a lot of unity in that room."

During the meeting, Senate GOP Conference Chair John Barrasso of Wyoming brought out a birthday cake to mark Trump's 78th birthday on Friday. Candles on the cake read "45" — Trump was the 45th president — but Barrasso added another set of candles on the cake that read "47," as Trump seeks to return to the White House as the 47th president.

Senators wished Trump a happy birthday, and he made a wish before he blew out the candles.

The Senate discussion focused heavily on energy and economic policy, including threatening tariffs on China if it buys oil from Iran. And he spoke about a new policy proposal he raised at a Las Vegas rally over the weekend: getting rid of taxes on tips .

Trump joked to senators that he has become very popular among the caddies at Mar-a-Lago, his golf club and home in Florida, after he proposed tax exemptions for tips, according to Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.

Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., told NBC News, "The little guy who makes his money on tips — making that no longer taxable is something that really resonates with a lot of people."

Between meetings with House and Senate Republicans, Trump sat down with CEOs with the Business Roundtable, a lobbying group that says it represents more than 200 major companies, as Washington and key industries prepare for the reality that Trump might be president again.

Several top contenders vying to be Trump's running mate also had a chance to catch his attention Thursday. They included GOP Sens. JD Vance of Ohio, Marco Rubio of Florida and Tim Scott of South Carolina. Trump mentioned the trio by name but not in a way that revealed his thinking about a decision about his running mate, a source said.

Some Trump critics in the party did skip out on the Senate meeting, including Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. Both voted to convict Trump after he was impeached in connection with Jan. 6.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, another vocal Trump critic who voted for conviction, had planned to catch a flight rather than attend the meeting. But on Wednesday, he said his flight to Florida had been canceled and that therefore he would join the event.

Trump was not expected to set foot in the Capitol complex itself, which his supporters overran in 2021. He huddled in the morning with House Republicans at the Capitol Hill Club, a private Republican club just steps from the Capitol office buildings. In the afternoon, he was to meet with GOP senators at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters after having addressed the Business Roundtable.

Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., who has not endorsed Trump for president, declined to say whether he would attend.

“No Trump questions,” Young said, adding that it is a personal rule “until I decide to make it no longer a rule.”

What Stood Out to Elite Michigan State Football 4-Star Target on Thursday Visit

Michael france | jun 14, 2024.

Recruit Gregory Patrick visits Ohio Stadium the day of the Ohio State, Michigan State football game on Nov. 11, 2023.d

  • Michigan State Spartans

Four-star offensive lineman Gregory Patrick was in East Lansing for an unofficial visit with the Michigan State Spartans on Thursday. Patrick is the second-ranked player in the 2026 class for the state of Michigan and the 13th-ranked offensive tackle, per 247Sports' composite rankings. Nationally, Patrick is the No. 155 player in the class.

Patrick first came to know offensive line coach Jim Michalczik soon after his hiring at Michigan State. Michalczik came around Patrick's high school, Portage Northern, and talked to head coach Kurt Twichell. Outside of brief courtesies, Patrick and Michalczik did not interact due to NCAA rules.

Patrick said it was Twichell who worked to arrange the unofficial visit.

"I watched [the team] do [organized team activities] and kind of hung out and talked to them for a while," Patrick told me. "I talked to some of the players, I'd say I've developed a pretty good relationship with a lot of the players, I'd say Cooper Terpstra, I actually played against him, he's a walk-on at Michigan State. I played against him when he was at West Ottawa. So we kind of talked a little bit. [Andrew] Dennis, those kind of guys I know pretty well."

Patrick said what stood out to him watching the practice was the intensity and the attention to detail that Michalczik's offensive line is disciplined to uphold.

"Each player is like, holding each other accountable, you know, they're each coaching each other up," Patrick said. "It's not just Coach M. So that's like, one thing that stood out to me. Another thing that stood out to me was just like, how a family, friendly environment it is that Coach M has developed in the offensive line's culture, especially how tight all those guys are."

Michalczik was described by Patrick as a "super genuine guy" and someone who was a good relationship-builder.

"He also talks about life in general, not just about football. So, I'd say he's just overall a really good guy."

Patrick was one of many offensive lineman recruits to attest to Michalczik's disposition and character. This visit was far from Patrick's first visit to Michigan State. He said he "probably lost count by now."

  • Accreditation  |

Beyond regular institutional reviews, additional monitoring of an accredited institution may be required if a peer review team or panel determines that an institution is in compliance with the Criteria for Accreditation, but there is a concern regarding the Criteria for Accreditation or other HLC requirements that requires additional HLC follow-up. This routine monitoring may take the form of a required interim report or focused visit.

The HLC president may also assign special monitoring to an institution, including an institutional designation, special monitoring report or advisory visit, as described in policy.

Note : See HLC's Dues and Fees Schedule for costs associated with monitoring.

Routine Monitoring

Interim report.

HLC may require an interim report when its goal is to receive specific, important information from the institution, track how the institution is progressing in coping with certain changes or challenges, or receive evidence that the institution's stated plans have come to fruition. HLC may require an institution to submit the interim report so that it can be reviewed through staff analysis, or HLC may embed the report in a previously scheduled comprehensive evaluation or focused visit.

Interim Report Procedure

Focused Visit

Focused visits occur between comprehensive evaluations and examine specific aspects of an institution. A focused visit is an evaluation of limited scope that reviews specific developments and changes or follows up on concerns identified by a previous evaluation process.

Monitoring Recommendations: Considerations for Peer Reviewers

Special Monitoring

Institutional designations.

Institutional designations are used to indicate when an institution is in financial distress or under governmental investigation. They allow HLC to respond quickly to developing situations at member institutions and to communicate to students and the public in a timely manner about situations that may affect an institution's operations.

Institutional Designations Procedure

Special Monitoring Reports and Advisory Visits

HLC’s president may call for a special monitoring report or an advisory visit to an institution to investigate specific issues. Such issues may involve the institution's governance, operations, finances or other concerns. See HLC's Special Monitoring policy (INST.F.20.010) for a list of situations that might result in an advisory visit.

The advisory visit is conducted by a team of HLC peer reviewers, who may be accompanied by the institution’s HLC staff liaison or other HLC staff member.

The special monitoring report or team report is not reviewed through HLC’s regular review processes. The HLC president will propose an action in response to the report, which may include a recommendation to HLC’s decision-making bodies for a possible further action, which could include further monitoring, a sanction or other actions within HLC policy and procedures. The institution will have an opportunity to submit a response to the president’s proposed action.
