For Yankee, watching "Despacito" become a global hit reminds him of what he experienced in the early Aughts with "Gasolina" and "Rompe," two mostly Spanish reggaeton hits that helped bring the genre into the American mainstream.

farewell tour!
One half of the duo behind the 2017 number one smash hit Despacito, Puerto Rican singer-songwriter and rapper Daddy Yankee was the first Latin musician to become the most played artist on Spotify. Don't miss this pioneer as he heads out on his newest, and final tour: La ltima Vuelta. That's right, following his first record in 10 years, 2022's 'Legendaddy' Daddy Yankee is hanging up his headphones!
As in Despacito, Daddy Yankee fuses pop and reggaeton in his music, bringing to mind sizzling hot summers and poolside parties. Don Omar & Daddy Yankee Lock In 4 Concert Dates
Following a sold-out show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 6, the dueling titans have finally confirmed they will play more U.S. dates. The Kingdom is slated to play July 30 at Madison Square…
By Leila Cobo
Chief Content Officer Latin/Español, Billboard
They fought. They made up. They announced a mega-tour. Then they fought again.
By the time reggaeton icons Daddy Yankee and Don Omar took the stage at the Billboard Latin Music Conference and Awards in April, the fate of the fabled Kingdom Tour looked might iffy.
Billboard Latin Music Conference: Daddy Yankee & Don Omar Rivalry Continues… Or Not?
Iffy no more, says promoter Felix Cabrera and manager/producer Raphy Piña. Following a sold-out show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 6, the dueling titans have finally confirmed they will play more U.S. dates.
The Kingdom is slated to play July 30 at Madison Square Garden in New York, August 6 at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami, August 7 at Amway Center in Orlando and August 27 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Tickets for the first two shows go on sale Thursday, and tickets for Orlando and L.A. go on sale June 23.
Don Omar Unites Machine Gun Kelly, Anitta, Wisin & Yandel for Premio Lo Nuestro 2024 Medley
It hasn’t been easy to get this far.
When it was first announced last August by Billboard , The Kingdom Tour promised to be the biggest Latin urban pairing in history, and certainly, the most momentous tour in the genre.
Yankee and Don Omar, longtime colleagues who’d had spats in the past, were joining for an ambitious 60-date trek that would also include a joint album and a TV show for the two artists, who between them have 11 No. 1 hits on Billboard ’s Latin Albums chart and 28 top 10 hits on Hot Latin Songs .
“I was motivated by doing something completely different — and by the size of the offer,” Yankee, 38, told Billboard at the time. “This is a sport, and I like to be the best athlete.”
Don Omar was equally pragmatic. “Let me clarify: I am not his best friend, and he is not my best friend,” said the 37-year-old. “But we respect each other. That desire to be the best is what has pushed us to be better.”
Things were slated to kick off with a Dec. 5, one-off date in Puerto Rico that sold out in minutes and became four sell-out shows, Dec. 3-6.
That much went off without a hitch. Yankee and Don Omar traded off individual sets and then performed together in what had been billed as an epic face-off. It was a resounding success.
But come 2016 — and for reasons that remain a mystery, at least to outsiders — things between Yankee and Don Omar began to cool off, and the tour kick-off was pushed back.
In April, the pair met for a panel and performance at the Billboard Latin Music Conference and Awards but barely looked at each other. Rumors swirled about a possible tour cancellation.
Don Omar Says Tour Is Still On With Daddy Yankee, Despite Rumors
On May 6, however, Yankee and Don Omar both made it to Las Vegas, and although their much-anticipated onstage musical “face-off” never happened, each performed individually as planned in an extremely polite atmosphere.
“Thank you for coming, family!” Yankee shoted at the close of his one-hour-plus set, which opened the evening. “This is Daddy Yankee, here with my colleague Don Omar, to give you a show of the highest level.”
Later, Don Omar made an effort to be equally congenial. “Are we having fun? That’s the most important,” he said. “Thanks for helping us tonight.”
At this time, it’s impossible to say what exactly could happen at MSG and beyond, but dates are at least locked in.
Neither Yankee nor Don Omar is saying anything, but what Don Omar told Billboard last year still holds: “There’s a professional rivalry, and we’re both going to show our best. It’s stressful, and I love it.”

Top 10 things to do in Las Vegas this week
Daddy Yankee, “Bullet Train” and John Legend highlight this week’s list of things to do in Las Vegas.
Daddy Yankee
Pour a little “Gasolina” out in remembrance, for Daddy Yankee is calling it a day. The “King of Reggaeton” will retire from the road following his current “La Última Vuelta World Tour.” The Puerto Rican singer/rapper has been one of Latin music’s most significant and influential crossover acts beginning in the early aughts, earning serious bragging rights as the first Latin artist to become the most listened-to performer worldwide on Spotify. Bid him adieu at 8 p.m. Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. Tickets start at $42; ticketmaster.com.
Jason Bracelin
Babes and Blues
With a high-energy show accompanied by a live band, Babes and Blues will celebrate two years of high-end New Orleans-style burlesque Tuesday at the Usual Place. The anniversary program will include new costumes, songs and acts in a completely unrehearsed show. “You just get raw, unfiltered performance,” Babes and Blues creator Isabelle Marie says. “Everyone on stage is just feeding off of each other, and you just never know what’s going to happen.” Tickets for the 7 p.m. show start at $20; eventbrite.com.
Maria Staubs
‘Bullet Train’
It’s the last big movie of the summer as “Bullet Train” rides into theaters. Brad Pitt stars as Ladybug, an assassin looking to slow down, who’s targeted by an eclectic group of international killers aboard the world’s fastest train as it speeds through Japan. The action romp is directed by “Deadpool 2’s” David Leitch. Only in theaters.
Christopher Lawrence
Kathleen Madigan
A natural storyteller who started out with journalistic ambitions, Kathleen Madigan soon discovered that being funny came easier for her than hard news. Blending a scythe-sharp wit with neighborly Midwestern charm as she riffs on the ridiculousness of everyday life, the 56-year-old today ranks as one of the most respected comedians of her generation. See Madigan turn headlines into punchlines at 10 p.m. Friday at the Theatre at The Mirage. Tickets start at $29.99; mirage.com/aces.
Gatsby Night soiree
Maybe it’s not exactly what F. Scott Fitzgerald had in mind when he penned “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past,” but hey, there’s an open bar and a champagne tower! The 1920s come roaring back as the Legacy Club at Circa hosts its Gatsby Night soiree at 5 p.m. Friday. In addition to live jazz, the aforementioned libations and a dessert bar, tickets ($150) include a period-appropriate costume. Go to bit.ly/GatsbyNight.
John Legend
Feel the love in Las Vegas as John Legend reconvenes his residency, the R&B crooner’s soaring vocals and silky-smooth piano playing paying homage to some of Sin City’s entertainment icons. Catch Legend at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Wednesday in Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood, with additional shows through Aug. 20. Tickets start at $79; ticketmaster.com.
Sunset sips
The new Sunset Wine Hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday in the Lobby Bar at Green Valley Ranch. Sunset Wine Hour features $10 selected wines by the glass paired with half-off light bites. The Lobby Bar also is introducing a new specialty cocktail menu with full-priced light bites served 3 to 9 p.m. daily.
Johnathan L. Wright
First Friday
First Friday is revving up its August installment. In addition to the art walk with an estimated 60 artists and craftspeople on Boulder Avenue, the monthly event will feature a lowrider hop off and a classic car show with an estimated 40 cars. This month’s featured artist is LaRon Emcee, whose characters are rooted in urban counterculture. First Friday is scheduled for 5-11 p.m. Friday in the Arts District.
Music and aperitifs
On Fridays and Saturdays in August, Eight Lounge in Resorts World Las Vegas presents Golden Hour, with aperitifs and live music on the terrace from 5 to 8 p.m. Eight Lounge encompasses 7,000 square feet, plus a 2,200-square-foot terrace with views of the Strip. Eight offers more than 150 cigars and a menu of craft cocktails created to complement tobacco flavors.
Taverna Costera anniversary show
One of the best new live spots/restaurants downtown turns 1 when Taverna Costera celebrates its anniversary this weekend with performances by The Sonz, Elephante King, Dama Vicke and The Musket Vine. There will also be DJs and free food samples from chef Chris Mahon. If you haven’t caught a show on the rooftop deck, you need to change that ASAP. Do so at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Taverna Costera, 1031 S. Main St. Free; tavernacostera.com.
Matt Friend says of his NHL Awards hosting role: “I like coming in with a purpose and a job.”
The recognition comes from a highly regarded pizza guide based in Italy that annually ranks the best pizzerias around the world.
Magician Shin Lim’s “Limitless” show will shut down at The Mirage on July 14 and will open at its new home on the Strip this fall.
Bruno Mars is deep into his residency at Dolby Live and has opened the Pinky Ring. And this is just the start.
The Eagles have added four more dates to their series at the Sphere, giving the band a total of 16 dates over eight weekends.
“X Rocks” was knocked off stage during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, so long ago that the Las Vegas casino it calls home changed names.
The FDA announced that ice cream products sold under Hershey’s, Friendly’s and other brands could be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.
The two-day dance party in downtown Las Vegas, an offshoot of the Life is Beautiful music and arts festival, is set to debut this fall.
One of the spots is being opened by a chef who celebrates traditional masa making. Another marks the return of an eatery that closed during the pandemic.
The pizzeria, which has been named among the best in Nevada and the best in the United States, is renovating an existing space in Henderson.
Daddy Yankee Sets the Stage for Farewell Tour, “La Última Vuelta”
Daddy Yankee is set to hit the Golden 1 Center stage on Aug. 18 for the Sacramento stop on his “La Última Vuelta World Tour”.
Currently 13 stops in, Daddy Yankee is just getting started, with 90 total shows planned for the tour.
Daddy Yankee announced in March that this is his “farewell tour” as he plans to retire from the music industry upon its completion.
“Every performance was accompanied by dynamic and in-your-face visuals that really came alive on the middle screen, which was sandwiched between two jumbo vertical screens that projected Yankee and made him feel like he was standing right next to you,” – Billboard

Reggaeton star Don Omar, 46, announced Tuesday that he is now cancer-free.
“Today I woke up without cancer and grateful. Thank you for your well wishes, prayers and thousands of messages. My operation was a total success and now what’s left is my recovery,” the “Duty Love” singer wrote in Spanish in an Instagram post.
Copyright infringement lawsuit against Bad Bunny, Karol G and others can move forward, judge rules
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a copyright infringement lawsuit against Bad Bunny, Karol G, J Balvin and dozens more reggaeton artists can move forward.

On Monday, the “Dile” singer shocked fans by disclosing via the popular social media platform that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Don Omar did not provide specifics about his condition, and his publicity team did not respond to emails seeking comment from The Times.
“Today yes, but tomorrow I won’t have cancer,” Don Omar wrote in Spanish in an Instagram post that featured an image of him wearing a medical wristband from Orlando Health. “The well wishes have been well received. We’ll see you soon.”
Born William Omar Landrón Rivera in Puerto Rico, Don Omar often describes himself as “El Rey” of reggaeton in his music. The two-time Latin Grammy winner first gained popularity in 2003 with “The Last Don,” his debut album that featured such tracks as “Dale Don Dale” and “Pobre Diabla.” His sophomore follow-up, 2006’s “King of Kings,” reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200. Don Omar has also appeared in the “Fast & Furious” franchise, portraying street racer Rico Santos.

Several artists and celebrities expressed their well wishes on social media following the announcement, including Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Olga Tañon and fellow collaborators Daddy Yankee, Ozuna and Farruko.
“My sweet child, you are a warrior of a million battles and you will with this one too of course,” wrote Tañon.
“Onward William the first mental and attitude battle you have won, my respects,” Daddy Yankee wrote in a comment. The two performers were involved in a years-long feud before burying the hatchet in December 2023. “Now to win the physical! You are in my prayers, and above everything, more than ever before I wish you HEALTH AND LIFE!”
The announcement comes ahead of the second leg of his Back to Reggaeton U.S. tour, which is scheduled to kick off in Oakland on Aug. 7. It’s unclear whether the tour will continue.

In an Instagram post on Monday, June 17, the Puerto Rican rapper/singer (whose real name is William Omar Landrón Rivera), 46, announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
“Today yes, but tomorrow I won’t have cancer,” Don Omar captioned an image translated from Spanish — featuring a hospital wristband from an Orlando medical center. “Good intentions are well received. See you soon. #f---cancer.”
Reps for Don Omar have not yet replied to PEOPLE's request for comment.
News of his diagnosis comes just hours after he posted an Instagram Reel featuring auditions from dancers for the second leg of his Back to Reggaetón Tour.
“The most special thing about today’s auditions is seeing that there are people who want to dare to dream with me,” Don Omar said in the post shared on Saturday, June 15. “Thank you to each of you who gave your all on the dance floor! This second stage of the tour comes with everything.”

In separate social media posts, the reggaeton stars shared their appreciation for one another and squashed their beef.
“Today we close the book that kept the best chapters of our controversial rivalry,” the "Danza Kuduro" artist wrote on Instagram , alongside a photo of Yankee, 47, smiling. “Thank you for your words and for listening to mine that came from the heart as well. I wish you the best for you and your family. Thank you for your competitiveness and admirable discipline but even more thank you for what you did for our music.”
Don Omar continued: “Thank you for collaborating and for competing because I did it with a titan. I keep the good memories, the laughs, the dreams together and the desire for a last round with such a great adversary. We will meet again soon because I owe you a hug and thank you in person. In the meantime, long live King Daddy.”
