Lukimbi Safari Lodge

Relatively cheap when compared to other first world destinations.  Extraordinary scenery and wildlife.

South Africa has an enormous amount to offer.  For big 5 wildlife safaris, you'd want to be considering the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands Game Reserve.

For nightlife, restaurants and exquisite scenery spend a few days in Cape Town.

Cape Town is best between November and March when it's warm and not too windy.

The Kruger Park is best towards the end of winter, before it getstoo hot and you can easily see wildlife with the foliage having lost its leaves.

7-nights Safari
I made a reservation for a 7-night safari trip to two specific Private Game Reserves in the Kruger National Park in South Africa, for one of the busiest months in Kruger: August. This reservation was made at the last minute. (3 days ago). A reservation that had some special features, with choices from someone who has already done (my husband and I) several safaris in other African countries. The architecture and design of the lodges are important to us on a professional level. And the Private Game Reserves had to be the best. Anja Meyer, from Safari.com, started and completed the reservation process in 4 days, two of which were weekends. Very efficient, fast and understanding what we wanted for our week in the bush. We are "addicted" to safaris, wildlife, bush, landscapes, nature... and we love Africa and the Africans. We can't wait for August to arrive. Thank you!

My first experience a number of months…
My first experience a number of months back wasn't as I wanted. I picked up with Dolan a little after this to find when the best time to Safari was with the chance of seeing the "big 5" and he was so helpful, guiding me to July-September. With the cooler winter months being the better chances to see more wildlife and the big five. This lead me on to deal with Jayson. Jayson has pulled out all the stops, working past 9pm Cape Town time( 8pm London UK) to help meet my needs. I travel out on 6th July and cannot wait, Thank you Dolan and Jayson. Julian Bingle, London, UK.

Sara Van Coillie has been extremely helpful in making our Namibia trip fantastic! We have emails up on emails of Sara answering all my (many) questions months and months before our trip. I've had last minute questions and requests right before and during our trip and she always responds with record time and helps us out. I feel all of our needs have been met and I couldn't be happier with Sara as our travel representative! Highly recommend her! :)

Pascal John extremely helpful, efficient and knowledgeable
Pascal John was very helpful with recommendations for our Safari Booking. He responded to all our emails and txt messages extremely quickly, especially given the time difference. He also sent videos of his recent experience at the lodges which was especially helpful.

Thanks Pascal you are amazing!
From the moment we arrived in South Africa, our safari adventure was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the heart of the African wilderness, we found ourselves surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Kruger National Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Our accommodation was luxurious yet seamlessly integrated into the natural environment, offering us stunning views of the savannah from the comfort of our private deck. Each day began with an exhilarating sunrise game drive, where our expert guide shared his deep knowledge and passion for the local wildlife. Witnessing the "Big Five" was an awe-inspiring experience that left us in complete awe of nature's magnificence. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we felt safe while immersing ourselves in the wilderness. Evenings were equally enchanting, with sundowner drinks enjoyed against the backdrop of a fiery African sunset, followed by sumptuous dinners under the starlit sky. The cuisine was a delightful fusion of local flavors and gourmet dishes, perfectly complementing the day's adventures. The sense of community at the lodge was heartwarming. The staff were attentive, ensuring every need was met with a smile, and fellow travelers quickly became friends as we shared stories around the campfire. Our South African safari was more than just a holiday; it was a transformative journey that connected us with nature and left us with lasting memories. For anyone seeking an adventure that combines luxury, education, and unparalleled wildlife encounters, a safari in South Africa is an absolute must. We left with hearts full of gratitude and a profound appreciation for the natural world, eagerly planning our return to this magnificent land.
A great experience
Pascal was wonderful to work with! When one camp option fell through he quickly found an equal alternative for our group. He was always very responsive to my many emails and texts. I would highly recommend Safari.com.

Popular South Africa Safari Styles

Large male lion in Kgalagadi National Park, South Africa

South Africa’s dry season arrives in May and lasts until October. It is the best time of the year for seeing wildlife as animals wander in search of water and food, and rainfall rarely affects visibility. There is also less vegetation, creating more openings in the bush to see the wildlife.

While dry season temperatures are cooler than in the southern hemisphere’s summer, lows seldom drop below 50°F, and a typical day in July, the southern hemisphere’s winter, averages around 65°F. As most days offer clear skies and sunshine, the conditions are excellent for game drives, bush walks, and more African safari experiences .

If you can only travel outside of the dry season, October through April have their own benefits. The rainfall waters the bushveld and the landscapes are brought to life, migratory birds are present and far easier to see, and rain showers are brief and rarely interfere with safari activities.

To find a month or season that works best for you, explore our guide on the best time for safari in South Africa .

We recommend spending a minimum of 10 days on safari, though 12 days provide more time to view the wildlife, and two weeks is ideal for visiting multiple camps and reserves. That said, you can customize your safari based on the number of days you have available.

10-day safaris are great for exploring a specific reserve like Sabi Sands, while 12-day safaris give you a little more time to visit multiple game reserves in Kruger. Spending two weeks on safari gives you plenty of time to visit multiple camps and enjoy various safari activities in South Africa’s top national parks and reserves. You may see herds of elephants bathing in a river one day and watch a pride of lions saunter to shady acacias a day or two later. You may also leave some days unplanned, giving you room to relax in the amenities at your safari camp or lodge.

You can also plan safaris for longer, and spending upwards of two weeks gives you more opportunities to see your favorite animals and birdlife. The length of your safari is guided by what you want to see and do, and we can help you decide.

Kruger National Park is the most recognizable safari destination in South Africa. Within the Kruger region, Sabi Sands and Mala Mala top our list of game reserves to visit on safari:

  • Kruger National Park : As the best place to safari in South Africa, especially among fans of the Big Five, it’s hard to pass up on visiting Kruger Park. With several stunning reserves within the greater Kruger region, no safari is ever the same.
  • Sabi Sands Game Reserve: Sabi Sands, on the border of Kruger, is South Africa’s most luxurious game reserve. It’s often the first game reserve booked for luxury South African safaris as the lodges are some of the finest in the world.
  • Mala Mala Game Reserve: Situated within the Kruger region, Mala Mala is a private game reserve that offers exceptional wildlife viewing and unrivaled luxury. The Kruger reserve is a hotspot for viewing the Big Five from the comfort of gorgeous camps within the untamed wilderness.

From Big Five game drives to bush and beach trips, guided bush walks, and nocturnal wildlife viewing, here are some of the top things to do in South Africa on safari:

  • Search for the Big Five, including lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos on South Africa safari game drives
  • Explore the bush with spotlights on nighttime game drives to see the nocturnal wildlife
  • Stay in luxury tented camps for a uniquely lavish experience surrounded by nature
  • Visit a safari reserve on the coast to see great white sharks, whales, and other marine life

There’s nothing quite as thrilling as coming face to face with a pride of lions or watching a massive elephant bull pass right by the front of your vehicle. From the Big Five to migratory birds, here are some of the animals in South Africa to see on safari:

  • African wild dogs

We recommend that travelers come adequately prepared for a safari tour in South Africa, which means packing some additional items over and above your usual travel packing list. Here are some items to consider packing for your African adventure :

  • Neutral, light-colored clothing
  • Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket
  • Long pants for bush walks
  • Hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes
  • Camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries, and memory cards
  • Insect and mosquito repellent
  • Sun protection, including but not limited to sunscreen, hats, lip balm, and sunglasses

A safari in South Africa is very safe.

South Africa’s safari animals pose little threat to your safety provided that you follow the instructions and guidance of your game rangers and guides.

Some regions in South Africa are malaria-free, though we advise bringing mosquito and insect repellent for your comfort.

Pickpocketing and petty crime are highly unlikely at South Africa’s safari lodges, although we recommend being mindful of your personal belongings wherever you travel in the world.

If you’re unsure where to head for your next holiday, whether you’re craving a beach retreat, a wildlife safari, thrilling adventures, or an active getaway, South Africa has it all and is the perfect choice. Start your South African vacation with a visit to Cape Town , celebrated as the ‘best city in the world’, surrounded by breathtaking sights and sounds. JENMAN African Safaris provides a selection of Cape Town travel packages to suit anyone who wishes to experience the Mother City. If you are a history enthusiast, don’t forget to visit Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Take the cable car or hike up Table Mountain for a panoramic view of the city. Also, visit the Cape Winelands , with its green rolling hills covered in vines, for wine tastings, making it one of the most popular highlights in South Africa.

Cape Town Safaris

Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve allows Cape Town visitors to get up-close and personal with Africa’s most famous animals all just a short drive from Cape Town. This tour is perfect for people wanting to make the most of their time and enjoy a safari without sacrificing too much travel time in the country. Also, as the reserve is situated in the Western Cape, you will never need to worry about the risk of malaria, and a one day safari is easily and conveniently slotted into your schedule as a fun day outing to enjoy some of the Cape’s most stunning flora and fauna.

Aquila Private Game Reserve is a 4-star family-friendly safari destination just a 2-hour drive from Cape Town. The 10 000-hectare conservancy is situated between the Langeberg and the Outeniqua Mountains in the Western Cape and is home to the Big 5. Game drives are offered on traditional safari vehicles, on horseback, or on quad bikes, each offering its very own unique experience with the wildlife at the reserve. Guests also have the opportunity to experience a fly-in safari by helicopter. The reserve has a large swimming pool with a poolside bar, serving cocktails and ice-cold beverages for socials.

Kruger National Park Safaris

Kruger National Park is the most famous national park in South Africa, situated in the northeast. It is also one of Africa’s largest game reserves, covering nearly 20 000 km². Home to the Big 5 as well as hundreds of other mammals and more than 500 different bird species. Kruger National Park is a must-visit when traveling in South Africa.

KwaZulu-Natal Safaris

KwaZulu-Natal is a diverse South African safari destination with its incredible mountains and beautiful coastal regions offering various options for exploration. Add a visit to Isimangaliso Wetland Park , the largest estuarine park in the country, to your itinerary to witness hippos, crocodiles, pelicans, flamingos, and a variety of other birdlife.

Highlights of a Safari to South Africa

South Africa has it all! It’s like a world in one country, with many places to visit and attractions to see and do. From Cape Town in the south to the Kruger National Park in the north, you’ll find something for everyone. Start your South African adventure in Cape Town and add a visit to Cape Point, a prominent landmark on the Cape Peninsula. Cape Point is known for its stunning views and historic lighthouse. Hikers, birders, nature lovers, the historically fascinated and culturally curious should all book a day trip to Cape Point.

Exploring South Africa and Cape Town wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Cape Winelands. Imagine mountains and green rolling hills covered in grapevines. This region produces international and award-winning wines annually. And the best part is that you can try lots of different wines at different places!

Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is a popular destination for wildlife safaris in South Africa’s province of KwaZulu-Natal. The reserve is home to the Big 5 and more than 340 bird species, making it a great place for birdwatching.

Another popular national park in South Africa is Addo Elephant National Park , which is the third-largest national park in the country. Situated in the Eastern Cape province, just a 30-minute drive from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Addo Elephant National Park was initially established to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area. Today, the park offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities, including the Big 5, antelopes, zebras, and over 150 bird species. Uniquely, the park goes beyond the traditional Big Five; it also hosts the Big 7, including the southern right whale and Great white shark in its marine environment.

Currency The currency is the South African Rand. There are R200, R100, R50, R20 and R10 notes.

Banking Banks are found in most towns and are generally open from 09h00 to 15h30 on weekdays and 08h30 to 11h00 on Saturdays (Closed Sundays and Public Holidays). Most of them offer foreign exchange services – with cash, bank & credit cards as well as travelers’ cheques. You can also obtain cash from automatic teller machines (ATMs). Several international banks have branches in the main city centres. Always advise your bank that you are travelling outside of the country as they might block your purchases if they are not informed.

Traveling around South Africa is relatively easy by air, road and rail. Main air routes are flown by SAA and British Airways (operated by Comair), and 2 low-cost carriers: Kulula.com and Mango. Helping you get around South Africa are 10 airports managed by the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). Additionally, there are some 90 regional airports, including Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit and Skukuza Airport, offering access to Kruger National Park. An extensive tarred road system makes traveling in South Africa by vehicle convenient and easy. There’s also the new Gautrain rapid transit railway system in Gauteng Province which links Johannesburg, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni and OR Tambo International Airport.

Hygiene standards for food health and safety in South Africa are generally high in hotels, restaurants, pubs and nightspots. Tap water in South Africa is safe to drink. Not all tap water in rural areas is safe for consumption, so take precautions if necessary. It is safe to eat fresh fruit, vegetables and salads and to add ice in your drinks. South Africa’s fish, meat and chicken are of excellent quality, so there is no need to limit yourself when enjoying the local cuisine. Restaurants are subject to South Africa’s food safety control legislation, which is implemented by the local government. Regulations include certification and regular inspections by health inspectors to ensure hygienic standards are maintained. Street food is not as common in South Africa as it is in other countries, although vendors selling traditional snacks and meals can be found in city centres and townships. Food safety in such instances cannot always be guaranteed.

South African temperatures average highs of 28°C and lows of 8°C in the summer months. Winter temperatures range from 1°C at night to around 18°C in the day. With average annual rainfall under 500mm, making the country somewhat dry. Much of the rain falls in the Western Cape in the winter, differing from the rest of the country, which experiences summer rainfall. On the other hand, the sunshine makes up for it, with an impressive daily average of 8.5 hours.

Summer Bring clothes that are cool, light and comfortable because summer temperatures can get well into the 30 – 40 degree Celsius range in some areas. Also, bring an umbrella or raincoat during summer as this is when most of the country gets its rain, but don’t forget a swimming costume (bathing suit).

Winter The winters are generally mild, comparing favourably with European summers. But there are days when temperatures dive, especially in high-lying areas such as the Drakensberg, so be prepared with jerseys and jackets. Cape Town gets its rain during the winter season so it’s advisable to bring rain gear along.

General Always bring a hat, sunglasses and sunblock as the sun can be strong even in the winter months. Walking shoes are a good idea all year-round, with warm socks in the winter. For game viewing, neutral-toned items are advised.

Most accommodation as well as restaurants offer Wi-Fi (free or paid). Camps and lodges generally have good connection, unless extremely remote.

The standard voltage in South Africa is 230 volts (around 220-240 volts) at 50 Hertz. You’ll need a travel adapter with three-point round pins to use your electrical appliances. These adapters are also available at major airports.

Best time to visit South Africa

Planning your vacation to South Africa is an easy affair, as the country is considered a year-round destination with pleasant summers and mild winters. Depending on your chosen activities and interests, South Africa offers many opportunities to explore the country’s multitude of sights and sounds.

Average day temperatures during the spring and summer months, from September to February, are in the mid to high 20s °C. In autumn and winter, between March and August, average temperatures drop to around 15°C, making any time of the year ideal for your South African holiday. Discovering South Africa as a traveler from the Northern Hemisphere is ideal, as the South African summer coincides with winter on the other side of the world.

Best Time for a Kruger Safari

If a visit to the Kruger National Park is at the top of your list, then it’s best to plan your South African wildlife safari between May and September, during the drier months of the year. The sparseness of the natural surroundings makes spotting wildlife easier, as animals tend to gather around waterholes during this time. If you want to witness the baby animals making appearances, then the beginning of the rainy season in November is a good time for your vacation in South Africa.

Best Time to visit Cape Town and the Garden Route

If Cape Town and the Garden Route are your primary focus, the best time to visit is between September and May when it is hot and dry. From mid-August to late September, the fynbos floral is in full bloom, and the southern right whales visit the coastline. However, the Western Cape province experiences cold and wet conditions from June to September.

Sun, sea and safari: South Africa highlights

Welcome to the wild! Is an African safari the ultimate tick on your bucket list? It should be! South Africa is special, there is no doubt about it, it is dusty and adventurous and warm and crazy and so much fun - we guarantee you will be back for more. The great thing about South Africa is the diversity you can find in one destination - 'Big Five' game reserves, waterfalls, spectacular self-drives, history, culture, great gastronomy, luxury, romance… we could go on and on!

You can discover lush scenery, breathtaking mountain views and exotic wildlife with holidays to South Africa. Plan your trip and discover our South Africa holiday packages and  hotels  today.

South Africa is a vast country with each province, city and game reserve offering a different experience, so where do you start? Most visitors combine a few different places within the country or across the region, travelling by plane, train or self-drive, and this is certainly what we would recommend.

Here are a few of our favourite combinations across South Africa and beyond:

Cape Town

City life mixed with adventure

Settle into an oceanside room in Cape Town then stay in the thick of it inside a game reserve. You can fly direct from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth for the Eastern Cape private game reserves or straight into Hoedspruit or Skukuza airports for the Kruger National Park.

Garden Route

Adding in some relaxation

For a relaxing break that includes a bit of the bustle of city life, start in Cape Town then take a meandering drive along the famous Garden Route ending in one of our wonderful game reserves in the Eastern Cape.

Safari & Sun City

Not a city person?

Then just skip the high-rises and get straight out into the bush. Sun City and Madikwe, Madikwe and Marataba, or just an extended stay in the Kruger, there are loads of options for the wild at heart.

safari south africa package

Culture vulture?

South Africa has a fascinating history and is a melting pot of cultures. Johannesburg and Cape Town are a great place to start with a choice of museums and exhibitions.

safari south africa package

Want to stay in one place?

Enjoy the Cape Town summer at The Bay Hotel in fun and funky Camps Bay, home to some of the city’s trendiest bars and restaurants. Stay here for the best of both worlds – where city life meets a sandy beach and the very best spot in the city for sunset cocktails.

Winelands

Head into the Winelands

Opt for Richard Branson’s Franschhoek lodge, Mont Rochelle, the ultimate in luxury. If you have a bit more time then add on a few nights in Hermanus too to spot whales and the infamous Great White Shark!

Holidays to South Africa wouldn’t be complete without a spectacular Big Five safari. You can choose to stay in a lodge or tent within one of the parks, or reside just outside and plan your own self-guided road trip safari instead  – either way, this is your chance to spot some incredible wildlife.

Safari & Sun City

When to go?

From April to October, we recommend heading for nothern areas such as Kruger National Park to enjoy warm safari evenings, and hot summer storms. However, if you do choose to enjoy the Eastern Cape in these winter months, the dry weather allows for low grass, less water-holes and easier wildlife spotting. From November to March, expect glorious weather wherever you go.

Kruger

Kruger National Park

One of the largest game reserves in South Africa with over 500 bird species and around 150 species of mammals. You’ve got a great choice of accommodation from tip-top luxury lodges to smaller, traditional hotels and homesteads outside of the park, great for the more budget-conscious.

safari south africa package

Heading South

Offering fantastic value for money, the Garden Route and Eastern Cape are home to some great private Big Five reserves including Pumba Private Game Reserve, with luxurious lodges and loads of activities on offer, especially for the kids. You're best off travelling in South Africa's summer months here (November - March) - if you're a first time safari-goer these would be perfect!

Safari & Sun City

Hotel comforts

If you like the idea of a safari but without staying in a lodge, try Sun City. This entertainment resort offers a good range of accommodation, a huge waterpark and choice of activities in a prime location just outside of the Pilanesberg National Park.

Immerse yourself in history and everyday life in vibrant  Cape Town . The lively metropolitan city is home to a myriad of boutiques, museums, restaurants and nightlife hotspots.

safari south africa package

The summer in Cape Town brings glorious weather and a drive through vineyards and along the Garden Route is one of the country’s highlights but also don’t be put off by travelling in the winter months! Sipping white wine under oak trees in the Cape vineyards in the summer months turns into drinking rich reds around the fire. Winter is also the best time to see the famous Southern Right Whales as they migrate to the Whale Coast from  April to November .

safari south africa package

Iconic Landmarks

Take a cable car up Table Mountain National Park for breathtaking views. Go early to miss the intense heat or abseil down if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. If you don't fancy such dizzy heights book yourself a ticket for the open bus tour - for less than £20 you can get a complete day tour taking in views of Table Bay along with Kirstenbosch National Gardens and the Constantia Vineyards.

safari south africa package

Food and Drink

The V&A Waterfront is the most visited tourist attraction in South Africa and a great place to find your feet. If you love sampling local food and drink, this is the place for you - head to the food market where you'll find over 40 vendors selling gourmet street food, accompanied by regular live music and local wines and beers. Pop by The Watershed with it's huge range of local crafts, great for picking up a souvier.

safari south africa package

When you've had enough of the hustle and bustle, escape to one of the beaches on the Cape coast for a picnic, Clifton or Camps Bay are a great option. In the evenings, get the party started on Long Street. On hotter summer nights, seek out a rooftop bar for epic views (and Instagram-worthy photo ops).

safari south africa package

History and Culture

Learn about the country’s rich history in one (or all) of the city’s many museums. District Six museum is a must-see to learn about the history of the apartheid. Set aside at least two hours to take in all the exhibits.

Alongside the wildlife, there’s all manner of forests, mountains and lagoons waiting to be explored. Here are a few you might not want to miss.

safari south africa package

Cango Caves

Located in the Garden Route, these massive chambers are easy to explore and the perfect escape from the midday heat. If you're adventurous (and don't mind tight spaces), opt for the extended tour.

safari south africa package

Swartberg Pass

After exploring the beautiful Karoo, take a majestic drive along the Swartberg Pass, dropping down from Oudtshoorn to the Garden Route coastline. Here you can immerse yourself in dramatic mountain scenery and beautiful flowers.

Kruger and Surrounds

Grab a car and spend a few nights here, as the prime location of this town allows for spectacular self-drive safaris in the Kruger National Park but also close-by is one of the largest canyons on earth, the Blyde River Canyon. The region is known as the Panoramic Route which includes God’s Window, the Three Rondavels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

South Africa has the opposite seasons to the UK — their summer is roughly  November to March  and winter is from  April to October . The north of the country (Kruger, Madikwe, Sun City) is generally warm all year but the cooler winter temperatures have a stronger effect on the Western and  Eastern Cape  Provinces which includes Cape Town and the  Garden Route .

Kenya offers a vacation for every traveller. From unforgettable family safaris with child-friendly activities and services to exclusive hideaways for couples and honeymooners, Kenya has it all and then some. The standards of service are high and Kenya’s top destinations offer luxury accommodation ranging from lavish, colonial-style lodges to contemporary boutique hotels and amenity-packed resorts.

USD per person per night

Kruger National Park & The Greater Kruger

South Africa’s biggest and best-known national park is home to the country’s greatest diversity of animals and exquisite safari lodges on private game reserves. As one of the oldest conservation areas in Africa, it boasts healthy populations of wildlife and highly sought-after sightings of cheetah and wild dog. But the Kruger’s claim to fame is the almost guaranteed encounter with the super-celebrities of the safari circuit: Africa’s iconic Big 5.

  • Luxurious lodges with spas, gyms, private pools and star-beds
  • Virtual guarantee of seeing all the Big 5
  • 5-star service and exquisite cuisine – some of the best safari food in Africa
  • High concentrations of wildlife
  • Off-road driving, spot-lit night drives and guided nature walks in private reserves

January–March & June–October

Dry Season:

The weather is usually mild and dry from January to March, and most of the safari crowds are absent. June to October is safari’s high season; the Serengeti is busy, but weather conditions are perfect and the Wildebeest Migration’s dramatic river crossings take place. Although the sheer size of the Serengeti will give you a soul-stirring sense of space, the areas around the Migration’s river crossing points can get busy. If you want to be close to the action yet enjoy some serenity, we suggest staying in an adjacent private reserve.

Green Season:

November–December

The ‘short rains’ season relieves the dry mid-year winter. Clouds build up in the mornings and break in spectacular, but generally short-lived, showers in the late afternoons. Migrant birds return from the northern hemisphere and resident plains game give birth, which means the predator action is thrilling.

Migration Season:

December–September

The herds usually cross the Grumeti River in the western Serengeti between about May and July, then move towards the Mara River in the north to cross into the Masai Mara between about July to October. November's short rains trigger the herds  to move back to the Serengeti to give birth before calving season, which takes place from January to March and is renowned for bitter-sweet predator action.

  • Crowd-free game viewing, nature walks and off-road game drives in private game reserves
  • Custom-made safaris for every traveller type – from families and honeymooners
  • Incredible year-round game viewing, especially predators
  • The Great Wildebeest Migration (December to October)

Consider Adding …

Kwandwe Game Reserve

Kwandwe Game Reserve is a malaria-free game reserve close enough to tour the Garden Route and end with a superb Big five safari in a historic area. The reception of the reserve is a Frontier War-era fortified homestead.

Timbavati Reserve Reserve

The Timbavati Game Reserve shares a common unfenced border with the Kruger National Park allowing the wildlife to roam free between the two. Stay at colonial-style game lodges, bush lodges and luxury tented safari camps, a South African safari dream destination.

Phinda Game Reserve

Phinda Private Game Reserve is on the Eastern coast of South Africa and has incredible lodges that are well-known for their high-quality game rangers, dedication to conservation and five-star luxury safari lodges.

High Season:

The drier winter months are the best time for game viewing on a South Africa safari in the Kruger, Madikwe, Pilanesberg and KwaZulu-Natal. Big game are usually concentrated around water sources and are easier to spot in the thinned-out vegetation. If you want to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast, then a visit between June and October is a must, with the numbers at their highest in September.

May–Oct

For a South African safari, the green season is when the landscape is a beautiful, lush emerald colour and with the best light of the year for photography. It’s calving season and there are great opportunities to witness baby animals and some dramatic predator action. For a Cape Town beach holiday, you simply can’t beat the hot summer months between November and March, but you have to book your spot well in advance for this trendy destination.

A Romantic Getaway    The Best of Cape Town & Kruger

Also Consider  Kenya

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu is an arrestingly beautiful, rocky landscape that heralds Kenya’s vast northern deserts.  It’s the traditional homeland of the Samburu people and a haven for the unique Special 5: Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, long-neck gerenuk and Somali ostrich.

Amboseli National Park

With its perennial wetlands flourishing beneath towering Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park is the best place in East Africa to see massive herds of elephant.  If you’re looking for that iconic postcard image of wildlife against a Kili backdrop, this is the place to get the shot.

The high plains of Laikipia are increasingly recognised as one of Kenya’s  best safari regions. It’s home to some of the country’s most encouraging conservation success stories like Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a sanctuary  for black and white rhinos as well as Grevy’s zebra.

Kenya Beaches

Relaxing along Kenya’s dazzling tropical coastline is one of the best ways to crown your safari. From family-friendly resorts to exclusive beach villas, the country’s coastline offers excellent accommodation and superb diving and snorkelling spots.

Rates generally depend on timing (i.e. key travel seasons like holidays) and level of luxury (the type of amenities and exclusivity). As a guideline, South Africa safaris can range anywhere from approximately 450 USD per person per night in low season to over 1550 USD at the finest lodges in high season.

What's Included in the Cost?

Most accommodations are all-inclusive; all your meals, snacks, beverages, alcohol (with some exceptions) are part of your room rate. In addition, your game drives, and other excursions will all be included. To operate in such remote areas at such a high level of hospitality, it takes some serious logistics and often means guest-to-staff ratios of more than 5 to 1. Not to mention many accommodations offer services like laundry, so you can pack light and travel easy.

The only things you’ll have to pay for are special activities (like hot-air balloon rides and spa treatments) and, in some cases, imported spirits. Beyond that, just gratuities for the incredible staff who will make your stay at each lodge so memorable.

But the Kruger’s pièce de résistance is the almost guaranteed encounter with the super-celebrities of the safari circuit: Africa’s iconic Big 5.

The dry winter season is considered the best time to go to Kruger for game viewing. Vegetation is low and sparse, making animals easier to spot and follow, and wildlife will not move far from remaining water sources at this time of year. It’s a very comfortable time for a safari with few mosquitoes around, little if any rain, and pleasant temperatures.

  • Virtual guarantee to see all the Big 5

Nov–Apr

The summer’s afternoon thundershowers transform the Kruger into a beautiful, thriving green landscape that makes for superb photography. Game viewing is still good – with many young summer-born animals around it's a predator's paradise – and it's the best time to visit the Kruger for bird watching plus safari-and-beach holiday combinations.

Kwandwe Game Reserve

Timbavati Game Reserve

  • Spot the Big 5 in malaria-free and private game reserves
  • Pair a safari sojourn with a famed Garden Route exploration, combining bush and beach
  • Visit the Addo Elephant National Park, most renowned for its large elephant herds
  • Take your pick from traditional thatched lodges, romantic tented camps or stylish boutique hotels

The Eastern Cape’s biggest draw is its reserves. As the newest addition to South Africa’s safari circuit, this once-overlooked province has now become a top big game destination in its own rights. Most of its reserves boast the Big 5 in easy-to-see habitats and offer a variety of safari activities ranging from game drives and river cruises to horseback and walking safaris. All of this is within a short drive from the popular beaches and seaside towns of the Garden Route.

Lying on the edge of the Kalahari and close to the Botswana border, the 75 000-hectare Madikwe Private Game Reserve is home to a rewarding mix of familiar savannah animals and desert specialists. It delivers thrilling, diverse big game safaris that not only meet but regularly exceed visitor expectations.

  • Enjoy malaria-free game viewing
  • Dedicated staff at lodges taking care of little-ones and offering kiddie-friendly safari adventures

South Africa safari: A detailed guide

South Africa is Africa’s most popular and best-developed travel destination, famed for its sun-soaked beaches and vast wildlife-filled game reserves. It also provides exceptional opportunities to combine safari trips with wineland tours, hiking and museum-hopping.

A recent ecological survey ranked it as the third-most important country in the world in terms of biodiversity. The Big Five are present, namely the lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino and roam freely through Kruger National Park, the country’s premier safari destination amongst a host of other mammals.

South Africa offers multiple worlds all rolled into one. Expect stunning coastlines, dramatic mountain-scapes, huge areas of untamed bushveld, beautiful semi-deserts, lakes, waterfalls, canyons, forests and of course Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Consistently voted as one of the top tourist destinations around the world, South Africa is also home to the best luxury safari lodges and camps with something for everyone is this stunning destination.

Table of Contents

Why South Africa for a safari

The country is one of the world’s finest Big 5 safari destinations thanks to its outstanding conservation areas and national parks such as: Kruger National Park and its private reserves like Sabi Sands, Thornybush, Londolozi, Mala Mala, Lion Sands and Dulini.

With nearly one million annual visitors, Kruger National Park is the country’s biggest attraction for wildlife lovers, and it’s easy to see why. All of Africa’s iconic safari species – thrive here with over 12,000 elephants, 27,000 African Buffalo, 2,000 leopards and 2,800 lions.

80% of the world’s rhinos live in South Africa, leopards are found in abundance as well as thousands of elephants, springbok and kudu dominating the plains, a joy to behold for visitors, washed down with a sundowner cocktail, local wine or stunning views of Table Mountain in the iconic Cape Town.

A South African safari can last for three hours or three weeks, depending on your appetite, budget and timeframe. High-end safari lodges with incredible African designs and detail have visitors flocking back to this stunning wildlife destination every year.

Kruger national park, South Africa: Elephants crossing the road

Top attractions visitors can expect from a South Africa safari include:

South Africa is a prime wildlife destination with the big five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and the African buffalo) easily seen.

Kruger National Park offers excellent wildlife viewing in general and the scenic KwaZulu-Natal parks are best to see rhinos. In Sabi Sand, the main focus is on seeing the Big Five and it is famous for its habituated leopards.

Other animals to be viewed on a South African safari include hyenas, giraffes, hippos, zebras, African wild dogs, crocodiles, wildebeest, kudu, warthogs, springbok and cheetahs.

Marine life is equally spectacular with visitors treated to sightings of the African Penguin, the Cape Fur seal, dolphins, dolphins, southern right whales and the great white shark among many others.

A lioness jumping out of the water in South Africa

South Africa has over 840 species listed. It has the highest number of endemic (occurring in South Africa only) and near-endemic (occurring in South Africa and its neighboring countries only) birds in Africa with more than 140 birds in this category.

Most of these species are confined to South Africa’s unique biomes (large, naturally occurring communities of flora and fauna): grassland, fynbos and Karoo. The migratory birds are present from November to April.

Notable birds include the African penguin, Blue crane, Crested guineafowl and the Pel’s fishing-owl.

Best Parks & Reserves

South Africa has a diverse range of wildlife parks and reserves. Aside from lush forest parks, South Africa also has distinct savannah and riverine parks and reserves.

Visitors can go on game drives and bush walks to view the plains game animals and on river boating safaris to view birdlife and aquatic fauna.

These national parks can be explored on foot, by 4×4 or by air and make for a truly unique experience with South Africa’s hidden secrets opening up to those that invest the time and effort to dig beneath the surface.

South Africa’s most populous city is Johannesburg, a top tourist destination in its own right with O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) airport acts as one of the main points of entry for visitors wondering how to get to South Africa .

Kruger National Park rhinos on the plain

Of particular note amongst all of the incredible parks and game reserves are Kruger National Park, Phinda Game Reserve, MalaMala GR and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi GR.

  • Kruger National Park – The jewel in the African crown and a wildlife lover’s dream. Located in northeast, Kruger is one of Africa’s largest game reserves with high densities of lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos and hundreds of other mammals, eagles and storks.
  • Phinda Game Reserve – Kwazulu Natal’s best private game reserve. All of the Big Five are easily spotted and the reserve’s flagship species is the cheetah with sightings very common for this unique creature.
  • MalaMala Game Reserve – An independent private game reserve that shares unfenced borders with Kruger National Park to the east and Sabi Sand Game Reserve on all other sides. Easy sightings of the Big Five and the leopard.
  • Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve – The flagship park of the Kwazulu-Natal province and one of the oldest parks in Africa. Rhino are very common in the park.
  • Sabi Sand Game Reserve – Sabi Sands shares a 50km/30mi unfenced border with Kruger NP with each of its individual private game reserves all offering the ultimate Big Five experience, luxury safari accommodation, great service and excellent food.
  • Addo Elephant National Park – The third largest national park & one of the best places in South Africa to see large herds of elephants. The Big Five are present also.
  • Gondwana Game Reserve – A luxury private game reserve with free roaming Big Five game located on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, a 4 hour drive from Cape Town airport.
  • Madikwe Game Reserve – A state-owned, private game reserve with all drives are conducted by the private lodges dotted around the reserve, a very exclusive experience.
  • Tembe Elephant Park – Hosts all the Big Five, but above all it is a place for elephant lovers offering incredible encounters with some of the largest elephants in Africa.
  • Karoo National Park – Most of the wildlife that once roamed here has been eradicated, but Karoo National Park is a relatively small area where this unique habitat and its animals are protected.
  • Amakhala Private Game Reserve – An affordable, family-friendly private wildlife reserve that is fully fenced but relatively small in area. Four of the Big Five animals are quite easily spotted, the exception being leopards which are seldom seen.
  • Mapungubwe National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage site with spectacular scenery and Mapungubwe Hill, the site of an ancient civilization. Elephant, white rhino and several antelope species are regularly spotted.
  • Shamwari Private Game Reserve – The best-known of the Eastern Cape’s private reserves offering excellent wildlife viewing with a good variety of animals including all the Big Five and luxury safari lodgings with first-rate food and service.
  • Lion Sands Private Game Reserve – A private reserve within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. All of the Big Five and cheetah are present, and sightings are common – including of the normally secretive leopard by the four 5-star exquisite lodges.

Other wildlife parks and reserves of interest include:

  • Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve – An authentic wildlife experience is assured at Sabi Sabi, one of the private luxury reserves located within the greater Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Big 5 viewings tend to be superb.
  • Balule Private Nature Reserve – All major safari animals are present, and game drives are conducted in open safari-vehicles, which can go off-road.
  • Thornybush Game Reserve – A small private game reserve sharing an open boundary with Timbavati NR. Wildlife viewing is generally very good, but the thick bush makes off-road driving more limited than in the neighboring private reserves.
  • Dulini Private Game Reserve – A private reserve and part of a vast ecosystem, Dulini offers an authentic experience with Big Five viewing. All big cats can easily be seen.
  • Idube Game Reserve – Located within greater Sabi Sand Game Reserve, there is an emphasis on seeing the Big Five, and wildlife viewing is excellent.
  • Inyati Private Game Reserve – The wonderful wildlife viewing is focused on seeing the Big Five with all big cats easily spotted. Even the shy leopard is habituated here and easily seen.
  • Kapama Private Game Reserve – A private game reserve with several high-end safari lodges offering a range of activities, including day and night drives, bush walks, balloon safaris and elephant interaction.
  • Kwandwe Private Game Reserve – Amongst the most exclusive private game reserves in the Eastern Cape, a superb Big Five wildlife experience is complemented by luxury accommodation and word-class food.
  • Ulusaba Private Game Reserve – A private nature reserve with open borders to the famous Kruger NP. All of the Big Five animals are easily spotted including the elusive leopard. The park is famed for its rare white lion.
  • Londolozi Private Game Reserve – Londolozi offers a genuine wilderness experience and excellent wildlife viewing. Emphasis is given to sightings of the Big Five and other high-profile species such as cheetahs.
  • Makalali Private Game Reserve – Makalali is a fenced, private game reserve with two luxury lodges. All of the Big Five and other safari animals are easily spotted.
  • Manyeleti Game Reserve – A privately owned reserve, situated between Kruger National Park and Timbavati Game Reserve, with open borders to both. The reserve is owned and managed by the local Mnisi people.
  • Mountain Zebra National Park – The best place to see the endangered Cape mountain zebra. The game drive circuit takes you through stunning mountain scenery with several viewpoints. Black rhino, lion, buffalo and cheetah are also present.
  • Singita Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve – One of the private reserves located in the greater Sabi Sand Game Reserve and all of the Big Five are easily spotted.
  • Timbavati Private Nature Reserve – A private nature reserve with open borders to the famous Kruger National Park. All of the Big Five animals are easily spotted including the elusive leopard. The park is famed for its rare white lion.
  • Weenen Game Reserve – A small, off-the-beaten-track game reserve, home to both white and black rhino and several antelope species. A wildlife shelter overlooking a small waterhole and a vulture-feeding site are some of the attractions.
  • Zulu Nyala Private Game Reserve – There are no lions in the park, but it is easy to get up close to all the other Big Five animals. Because of the limited size of the park, game drives can become repetitive.

Scenic parks and reserves include:

  • Camdeboo National Park – The main attraction is the semi-arid Karoo environment and scenic highpoints such as the spectacular Valley of Desolation, where erosion has left dolerite pillars of more than 100m high.
  • Ithala Game Reserve – The park’s scenic beauty is a large part of its attraction. Rolling hills and rugged cliffs create a dramatic backdrop and good viewing of white rhinos can be expected.
  • |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld TP – Spanning both South Africa and Namibia and with some of the most spectacular desert mountain scenery in Africa. The park is mainly a scenic wilderness destination. In Namibia, it features the extraordinary Fish River Canyon, the world’s second largest canyon.
  • Golden Gate Highlands National Park – Its name comes from the golden glow on its sandstone rocks in the late afternoon. The park is home to a variety of animals adapted to highland grassland habitat, including several unusual antelope species.
  • Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park:  Straddling the border with Botswana, this extensive park covers a total area of about 14,670 sq miles of which about 25% is within South Africa.
  • Augrabies Falls National Park – The Orange River thunders down the 56m-high Augrabies waterfall before it continues its path through an 18km gorge.
  • uMkhuze Game Reserve – Seldom visited by overseas visitors, but popular with local birders and photographers. Several photographic shelters give close-up viewing opportunities of a wide variety of animals coming to drink in the dry winter months. Although not a typical Big Five reserve, all of these sought-after animals are present.
  • Marakele National Park – At the heart of the Waterberg Mountains, the park is home to the Big Five, but sightings are hit-and-miss. A highlight is the vulture viewpoint where Cape vultures can be spotted.
  • Mokala National Park – Mokala is a recently established national park, protecting sandy plains dotted with impressive camel thorn trees. The small park isn’t a prime wildlife-viewing destination but offers a range of activities.
  • Pilanesberg Game Reserve – The Pilanesberg has a beautiful setting and plenty of wildlife. Set in the eroded remnants of an ancient volcano, the Pilanesberg is a very scenic Big Five destination. A three-hour drive from Johannesburg.
  • Spioenkop Game Reserve – A small, but very scenic, game reserve at the base of the Drakensberg Mountains. Central to the reserve is a large dam open to the public for fishing and water sports. White rhino, giraffe and zebra are usually seen.
  • Waterberg Biosphere Reserve – Home to the ambitious UNESCO conservation project. For tourists, the Biosphere encompasses the highly regarded Lapalapa wilderness area, Marakele National Park and the upmarket Welgevonden private game reserve.

Safari tours

A safari tour package in South Africa is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive Africa safari trip.

Spread across the country, including various tour packages, South Africa’s parks and reserves can take several hours/flights to connect to each other.

Victoria Falls in Zambia is positioned at the heart of the Southern Africa safari experience and the incredible Okavango Delta in Botswana can be easily combined with incredible wildlife destinations such as Kruger NP in South Africa.

It is therefore important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their South Africa tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Things to do in South Africa (hot air balloon, hiking)

Guided tour

A guided safari package brings the benefit of:

  • Transfer via South Africa fly in safari /4×4 to the safari camps and lodges
  • Luxury lodge packages
  • Meals/drinks all catered for
  • Safari guides and transport
  • Facilities prepared including showers, wifi, cocktails and all requests
  • Combined trips to neighboring countries and beach trips
  • Tailored trips including chimp trekking tours

Self drive safari

For self-drive African safaris, visitors can hire their own 4×4, whilst accommodation can be secured in park campsites or in the vehicle itself if a campervan option is selected.

Part of the fun of a self drive safari is spotting the abundant wildlife on your own and taking the time to spend viewing your favorite animals.

A normal 2 wheel drive car may be sufficient, and of course cheaper, for some parks however other parks have deeper sand and a 4*4 will be required.

Best time to go to South Africa

The best time to visit South Africa is from May to September, as the cooler winter months in the northern regions bring superb conditions for viewing big game.

It can be rainy from November to February, but this is the best time to travel for birding, and temperatures remain warm at 22°C to 33°C.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know when to travel to South Africa, visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

South Africa safari cost

South Africa is marketed as a wildlife haven where visitors will be amazed by the range and number of wildlife on offer as well as the high quality of unique accommodation. These tend to be the most expensive elements of any safari.

High tourist numbers are attracted to South Africa however visitors will be pleasantly surprised that prices for activities and food are very reasonable compared to other African safari destinations.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in South Africa including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flights, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travelers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and activities as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your safari in South Africa including:

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget. This option requires time and know-how to plan for all flights, transport, meals, accommodation and safari tours.

Without the knowledge of specific safari destinations and logistics in navigating an African country, this may be a challenging option for many travelers.

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in South Africa where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Tailor-made tours
  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

U.S, U.K, Canadian and many EU citizens can travel visa free to South Africa for up to 90 days for tourists going on a South Africa safari. Citizens of other countries may require a South Africa visa .

U.S. citizens (U.S. passport holders) visiting the Republic of South Africa for ninety (90) days or less for tourism purposes do not need visas.

If you’re visiting South Africa for tourism or business purposes for a period of up to 90 days, you don’t need a visa. You should check the expiry date of your visa or entry stamp and make sure you do not overstay.

EU & Switzerland

Most EU countries can enter South Africa and stay for a period of up to 90 days without a visa, including citizens of France and Germany.

The CDC and WHO recommend the following South Africa vaccines : Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Yellow fever may be required if traveling from a yellow fever endemic country.

The CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of South Africa take prescription medicine to prevent malaria.

The assured malaria-free safari areas are the Eastern Cape, the Pilanesberg National Park and the Madikwe Game Reserve, the Waterberg (just 3 hours north of Johannesburg), and last but not least the Nambiti Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.

Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

Malaria is a risk in South Africa. Consider taking anti-malarial medication if you’re traveling to this area. Other insect-borne diseases include leishmaniasis. Ensure your accommodation is insect-proof.

Malaria is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and so the first line of defense is to protect yourself against mosquito bites. Malaria Prophylaxis may be prescribed to you during your consultation depending on your itinerary.

Check with a travel medicine specialist to see if antimalarials should be considered to help prevent malaria contraction.

At the point of entry into South Africa, you are not need to provide a PCR test or immunization certificate any more. However, additional conditions for entrance are still in effect. To reiterate however, all limitations in South Africa that were associated with COVID-19 have been abolished.

For further details, see our South Africa vaccine requirements resource.

The essential items to pack for your South Africa safari include:

  • Neutral coloured clothes
  • Long-sleeved shirts protecting against the sun and mosquitoes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and insect repellent
  • Jackets and sweaters for early morning game drives
  • Comfortable shoes for walking safaris

The currency of South Africa is the South Africa Rand (ZAR).

USD $1/GBP £0.80 = Approximately 15.80 South African Rand.

Driving in South Africa

South Africans drive on the left-hand side of the road and visitors driving through parks may require a 4×4, whilst carrying a map & GPS is recommended.

Visitors should consider travel insurance when planning their trip to help protect and cover the costs of hospitalization or repatriation if required.

Some credit cards may already include travel insurance. Online travel insurance comparators are also useful in finding suitable offers.

Safari Packages South Africa - Some Frequently asked Questions

What type of accommodation can i expect on these safari packages.

All of the above overnight safari packages include 4-star Bed & Breakfast type accommodation. The accommodation is based in St Lucia, KZN as this is the most central point from which to enjoy all of the outings and safaris.

Should you prefer a different style of accommodation simply let us know and we will gladly assist you with the various options available.

When should I Book a Safari Package?

There truly is no right or wrong time to book a safari package. This would rather depend on busy times and prevailing weather.

KwaZulu Natal becomes quite busy during the high season being our December holidays from 15 December to mid-January.

Game Parks and most beaches do tend to become quite busy.

Weather conditions play an important factor when deciding when to visit. Being tropical December to the end of February are hot and humid times.

Heritage Tours & Safaris offers these safari packages, they are not set dates and therefore offer you more flexibility.

How can I book a Safari Package?

Email is by far the easiest way to get in touch with us and let us know which of the super packages you would be interested in.

Should you like to call us by all means our landline is +27 35 5901555

Unfortunately, we do not offer Live Bookings for our Safari Packages Online this is primarily due to the fact that most of our clients would like some minor adjustments made and that we are more than willing to accommodate these adjustments.

Are their any hidden Costs involved in the Safari Packages?

We pride ourselves in being able to offer the above safari packages all in house.

Therefore there are no hidden costs whatsoever, nor commissions paid to any other operators.

Could we find other safari packages cheaper?

The simple answer is no. If compared our safari packages offer more activities, and all safaris are conducted in authentic safari open game drive vehicles.

In many instances, our safari packages are cheaper and this is primarily due to the fact that we do not pay commissions to third parties.

What are the best months to enjoy a South African Safari or Safari Package?

Generally, the drier months are better, from May to the end of October. This is primarily due to there being less water which ensures that the game will be more prone to be at watering holes.

During the drier months, the vegetation is also thinner which effectively helps one with better sightings. KwaZulu Natal in particular is a popular area to enjoy multiple Day Safaris as well as Overnight Safari Packages due to its sub-tropical climate.

This province is also home to the magnificent Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park which happens to be the largest game reserve and is also home to the African Big 5.

How much does it cost to go on a Safari in South Africa?

This would depend entirely if you are opting for a Safari on a Private Reserve or in a Public Reserve as well as the area that you would like to visit.

Kruger National Park is the largest public reserve and due to its popularity thus offers its day safaris at a higher price per person. This park also has numerous private reserves within the park and bordering it. These private reserves do on occasion offer day safaris to the public however this is not the norm as one would have to purchase an overnight all-inclusive package that would include safaris.

Other provinces such as KwaZulu Natal have also fast become ever popular with private reserves these too over overnight packages at premium prices.

Should you like to enjoy a True Safari Package at a market-related price starting from $350 for 2 Nights. Click here for more .

Which South African Safari is the Best?

This depends on what it is that you would like to see and experience. There are numerous game reserves in South Africa. One will also have to decide if you would like to enjoy a Private reserve, public reserve, self-drive or organized safari.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve due to its size, and wildlife population makes for an incredible Safari be it self-drive or organized safari.

For some Organized Big 5 Safari Options click here .

Is South Africa better for a Safari?

Enjoying a Safari while in South Africa is firstly easy to book and enjoy. With good infrastructure, one may easily enjoy multiple safaris to multiple provinces in South Africa.

The provinces to enjoy these safaris would be KwaZulu Natal, with truly amazing road networks and airports. Limpopo is in close proximity to Johannesberg and lastly Cape Town with its reserves and Winelands.

For safari first-timers, South Africa is truly an easy cheap, and convenient way to enjoy a fantastic Safari.

Where is the best Safari destination in South Africa?

For years it has always been easy to say, Kruger National Park, why due to its size primarily, history, and of course some amazing marketing.

KwaZulu Natal has without a doubt fast become a top contender, this being due to the number of private reserves, variety of wildlife species, and also the amazing array of activities that one may enjoy in a smaller area.

The No 1 area within KwaZulu Natal for instance has to be the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park triangle. Home to the Big 5, Cheetah, Wild Dogs, Hippos, Whales, Turtles and so much more, and this in a mere 54km radius.

Are Safari Packages South Africa worth it?

If you are a lover of the outdoors, wildlife, people, and exploring something amazing then the answer is absolutely yes. South Africa has so much to offer and is a magnificent destination to enjoy a wide variety of safari packages.

Are Safari Packages into South Africa expensive?

This would entirely depend on the type of safari package that you are looking for when visiting South Africa. Private game reserves are known for their exclusivity and grandeur however this comes with a cost. Heritage Tours & Safaris offers 4-star safari packages into South Africa, (KwaZulu Natal). These packages offer absolute value for money excursions and safaris.

What is the best time to go to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park?

Year-round visits to this park always guarantee you some incredible sightings. We depart into this park on a daily basis besides Christmas and we can truly say that no times are better than others.

If one takes into account weather, fauna, and flora the winter months are dryer and thus are less lush, which contributes to easier sightings. (Winter months are, June to the end of August).

Parturition takes place during August and September and this is truly an amazing time of the year to visit the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park.

Why is the Hluhluwe Game Reserve Famous?

Numerous reasons contribute to this park being so well known.

  • In the early 60s when less than 100 Rhinoceros walked the planet, it was the Safe the Rhino campaign that was established in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve that single-handedly saved the rhinos from extinction.
  • Techniques may be seen at the Centenary Center in the Imfolozi side of the Hluhluwe Game Reserve.
  • This has contributed to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve having the largest population of rhinos in the world.
  • King Shaka (Zulu King) made use of the lower Imfolozi Game Reserve as his personal hunting grounds in the 1800s

How do you find Lions on Safari?

This would vary between a safari in a private reserve versus a public reserve.

Private reserves may have their lions tagged and may therefore track them. Also in private reserves safari jeeps do sometimes have trackers and rangers which contributes to the success of tracking lions. Private reserves also allow trackers and rangers to traverse into the bush.

Public reserves on most occasions only a ranger will be present on safari without a tracker. This means that the ranger has more responsibilities and has to be more in tune with the area in which he or she is tracking a lion.

Rangers / Guides use numerous techniques in finding Lions, most often areas of water source, animal movements, vantage points, and of course being in the reserve for numerous years offers a better understanding of where and when a Lion may be encountered.

One of our best Rangers ironically always looked for Lion's Tail flicking in the distance.

Top Destinations:

KwaZulu Natal , what makes this province ideal for a Safari Package? Firstly the weather remains ideal year-round with its subtropical climate. February remains the warmest month and may just be a bit warm. Infrastructure within the province makes for easy access, and continued upgrades to the existing roads, as well as national roads, are quite impressive.

KwaZulu Natal has added a new International Airport (King Shaka) on the outskirts of Durban on the North Coast road (N2) further assisting in easy access to Bush country in the North.

KwaZulu Natal , Zululand is situated North of Durban approximately 200 km north. The area is synonymous with its Bush and Beach destinations, world heritage sites, and much more. Zululand offers magical discoveries, culture, and an abundance of wildlife. A true Safari destination awaits.

Cape Town  is a metropolitan city that offers some amazing outings and safari opportunities. From the Atlantic Ocean to Table Mountain to vineyards galore there is truly something for all.

I went on a 2-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for just $50 a day

  • I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.
  • I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.
  • Driving our own car, camping, and preparing our own food saved us money.

Insider Today

The idea of a South African safari often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.

According to a data analysis from Go2Africa , the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.

But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.

Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.

I saved by buying an annual pass

The biggest savings at Kruger National Park can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.

The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.

Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.

Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.

We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps

One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.

We live in South Africa , so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.

Kruger National Park has a range of rest camps for different budgets and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.

Related stories

Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.

My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.

Cooking our own food saved us money …

We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.

Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.

The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.

But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.

… and so did doing a self-driving safari

If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.

We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.

Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.

On our last self-drive safari in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).

Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy

We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.

This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.

Watch: A single trail takes hikers to 10 waterfalls near Portland, Oregon — and you can walk it in less than a day
