A great car! The presenter was impressed being newly acquainted to the DS. He seemed confused as to what years defined their different noses. A bit more emphasis on its anti-dive brakes and a mention of a big selling point for a safari would be its self levelling suspension. Probably have to mortgage the house for that one.

Quite a delightful video of the !964 ID Slough Safari. Having experienced the different versions of the early 60's ID, I now enjoy a '62 Slough Safari similar to the car shown. The number plate bracket and the wooden dashboard identify this ID model as a Slough (an industrial area in England) assembled Citroen. All early French ID varients have the continuous curved front bumper and the wooden dash can only be British. Similarly , Slough assembled traction models have the wooden dash and a straight bumper bar compared to the curved one on the French models. The ID Safari that Sven is restoring, is an excellent example of Citroen in 1963 having been imported from France. The Slough models are normally one colour only while the French model has the two tone grey roof and the the body colour to the tops of the doors including the bonnet. Ofcourse the hubcaps on the car shown are French as Sven's Safari will adorn while the correct ones are full stainless steel hubcaps that come out to the outer rim. To me, these small French hubcaps look silly on the British model but to the person, new to these cars, well "they look great" What is common to these pre-'66/'67 ID models, is the long stroke engine, a carry over from the Traction. Very economical high speed cruisers with soft suspension that will go anywhere. Michael

Parked Since ’71: 1961 Citroen ID19 Safari Wagon

citroen id safari

This 1961 Citroen ID19 Safari Wagon looks promising in these dusty, as-found photos of it languishing in a Tennessee barn. Despite its completeness, there are body issues lurking that will make this either an exceptional parts car or tremendous labor of love. The Safari Wagons are rare finds in the U.S., and this one has seemingly emerged untouched, from its hubcaps to its clever jumpseats in the cargo hold. Find it here on eBay with an opening bid of $1,000 and no reserve – and no activity at the moment.

citroen id safari

Thanks to  Barn Finds  reader Fred H. for the find. The Citroen is described by the seller as heavily rusted in areas that are not easy fixes, including the “…inner structure and floorpan,” despite not looking terribly rotten from the outside. All glass remains intact, as do most of the lenses (aside from the easily replaced headlight.) The old-school and heavily-weathered license plates give some indication as to how long this Citroen has been parked, which the seller pegs as being 1971. Sadly, the engine is locked up and the tires are permanently flat.

citroen id safari

Unfortunately, despite being incredibly innovative for their time, the Citroens of this era were also incredibly complex – which makes restoring them a challenge for even the best-preserved examples that haven’t seen use for some time. The shame of the rot, in this case, is that the rest of the wagon just looks untouched – you don’t see any major damage done to the dash or door panels, and being parked in 1971 means it didn’t spend that much time on the road before it entered early retirement. The details of the cabin are still beautiful today.

citroen id safari

I love the rear seating arrangement, and the seat cushions themselves still look quite clean (not sure what’s growing on the back of the rear seat – fingers crossed it’s not mold). The seller notes that the engine’s cylinder head was removed long ago, but it is included with the carburetor and other miscellaneous parts. This tells you some attempt at mechanical recovery was made before life got in the way, and this cool Safari Wagon remained parked for decades. Would you attempt a restoration or simply part it out to save a better example?

Why does “Raiders of the Lost Ark” immediately come to mind?

citroen id safari

Q: In the rear view, is the left quarter panel missing altogether? I see nothing past the tailgate. These are nightmares; unless you have bottomless pockets, don’t even look at one of these to restore. Suspension & electrical systems are not for novices. These were rare to see in the U.S. in the 60s, and virtually non-existent today. A local gas station had a DS19 wagon rotting on the side of their building, until one day, a bulldozer made short work of the car, the station–everything! An office structure stands there now.

citroen id safari

The rear quarters came off I believe to make it easier to change the tire.

citroen id safari

Nope, you can easily change a tire on a Safari, only the sedan needed to have the rear fender removed,

citroen id safari

The DS’s are complicated cars yes, but as long as they are not deeply rusted, restoration is not really a nightmare. Most parts are available on line, the Citroen community is strong, albeit very cliquey, and all the hydraulic suspension mysteries have been solved over the years. If you have some years of mechanical experience, and have some time on your hands, there are few cars more rewarding to restore than a Citroen DS.

citroen id safari

“there are few cars more rewarding to restore than a Citroen DS.”

===========================

Stop ! Stop ! My sides hurt ! Wow !

As a comedian, you are going places with “gold” like that one !

citroen id safari

Parts and even then is worth it?

citroen id safari

I’m thinking custom frame, super charged LS with a six speed, and air bags. I think this would make a cool custom to go to the cruise in. It would be a labor of love though.

citroen id safari

The steering wheel alone is worth nigh the asking price! I’ve never seen a wonkier helm…

citroen id safari

I’d forgotten what cool steering wheels these bubbies have….

HoA

Still waiting on parts from France,, :)

citroen id safari

Two in one day! What’s up with the automotive universe?

Quirky for sure, but what other car can you drive on 3 wheels? In the 70s these would glide by you on the “auto route” or the autobahn even when you were doing 200K or 120 MPH!

Had a friend as a kid, whose parents had half a dozen Citroens. If you can get past the French penchant for designing goofy looking cars, then you might be able to appreciate the novelty-at-every-turn aspect of a Citroen. I never could. While I was enamored with the sleek and slippery coupe and convertible 57 DeSotos and 59 Buicks, she was trying her best to explain how cool these Citroens were. I still don’t get it.

To be fair, I can appreciate just about any pre-70 car in one aspect or another. And I suppose the Citroen was one of those “statement” cars. The car that let everyone know you were a “deeper thinker”, … not another sheep with another “boring Ford or Chevy”. The ultimate automotive rebel. Kinda like the modern day Leaf and Prius crowd ?

In spite of its wonkiness, it did not escape a certain “George Jetson” feel, that was mandatory design etiquette for almost everything in the 1956-63 period. Funky for sure, and certainly more *interesting* than yet another #@! Chevelle ! …. but nothing I’d want to work on or have taking up shop space around here !

citroen id safari

Restoring a Mercedes 450 sel 6.9 is cheap when compared to taking on this restoration. I’m thinking that an Americanized sleeper might be the way to go

I am thinking I would just keep on walking … it is interesting to look at, as a break from the same old staple cars at every car show, but any more effort or attention I will leave to the rabid Citroen nut. Too many other great cars out there to love on, to be wasting any time or money on a Citroen.

Isn’t the German word for “Citroen”, “Clusterschtuppe” ? 😜

citroen id safari

I would cut it in half and make the rear the front with suicide doors!!!!!

citroen id safari

Way back in Dec 1970 there was a DS sedan languishing in the repair garage of a couple of hippy mechanics in NH who tended our relatively new GM’s. They were good mechanics, but could not get some parts, and, could not figure out some of the issues since the manual they had was in French. I helped translate a few paragraphs for them but when we moved away 6 months later the car was still up on jack stands.

citroen id safari

OK. Enough of the uninformed comments. This car, as is, would make $30000 at auction in Retromobile in Paris, early February.

You´ll have to be quick.

With 12 camels to pull it to Paris, I should be able to do this, no problem ! 🚀

citroen id safari

Great cars ahead of anything automotive and still stylish. Parts are available suspension use the right oils in the hemispheres. Biggest problem is rust in the rear quarters. Well worth the restoration process at this price.

citroen id safari

Three on my high school buddies had these in the four door version. One of them – a Dallas radio personality – still has his hidden behind his garage.

citroen id safari

We have a couple of Citroen here at the end of the road .I cant imagine attempting to put one back on the road .When I bought them there were several at an estate auction ..and some former French colonist were going nutz for them ……I think one was driving a peaugot /////I can go for a Renault now and then but for me the Citroen is just worth having around to say ….”look where the transmission is !” Years ago I would pass a repair shop down to Dallas on Commerce street had at least 50 of these lil lovelies sitting about on the street for a block ,in a compound and even atop the building …Never stopped by always sorta wondered did they have that much business or was it just taking that long to get them going Id say a man good at making these things go would never have a shoratge of something to do …keeping them running

citroen id safari

That first picture is so dreamy…

1960 ID19 Safari Restoration by Mark Krahn

citroen id safari

It takes considerable courage to resuscitate a Citroën D that has sat outside for more than two decades in the British Columbia climate, but Mark Krahn of Armstrong, BC took up the challenge of this 1960 ID19 Safari, (S/N 3304263), doing a restoration for the most part at home, with results that are stunning. As Mark tells it;

The story of my “find” began when Greg Long in Seattle gave me an old email address for Tom Anderson, who he remembered as having a ripple bonnet 2CV in the 1980s. This was the original car I was searching for, however after not hearing back, I assumed the address was unused and gave up the lead.

Almost a year later I received an email back from Tom that simply said he had a 1960 Break (the station wagon version of the D, and referred to as a Safari in North America) and that I could have it (with no mention of the 2CV). The Break had been sitting in a field in Summerland for the last 20 years after some engine issues took it off the road.

Tom originally bought the car in Gibsons, BC in the 80’s, when he was working on the set of the CBC television series “The Beachcombers”. He is not aware how many owners there were before him or whether it was originally a Canadian car. It  was used locally by him, with only a few trips around BC, finally ending up in Summerland, where he still resides.

Greg Long came up from Seattle to assist in the recovery and transport it back to Armstrong. Tear-down began almost immediately and though many pieces were found to be in great condition, the frame was quickly recognized as beyond repair. Another rust free frame was sourced within months in the Palm Springs area and brought back shortly after.

Beyond using the frame, it was very helpful to have essentially another car to use for parts. Even with the 2 cars however, many parts still had to be sourced. Body and frame repair and paint were done by myself, as was the majority of the restoration beyond the engine/transmission and hydraulic components.  Repair/rebuilding of these were done by:

  • Chris Middleton (Seattle) — engine rebuild (parts sourcing for this was truly a world-wide effort!)
  • Chris Dubuque (Seattle) — transmission, caliper, brake control and axle rebuild.
  • Richard Jentner (Edmonton) — hydraulic components (LHM conversion).

As well, seemingly endless assistance was given by other owners both in North America and Europe. Chris Bronkhorst of the Netherlands was particularly helpful in sourcing some difficult pieces such as the original style fabric (Helanca Mordoree).

The Safari has been the most extensive restoration I’ve ever undertaken, and though not easy, was certainly made possible by the support of the Citroën community. I would quite like to be able to pass on the support at some point to another who might be ambitious enough to try an early D. I certainly have enough  parts left!

And yes, Tom Anderson did end up owning a ripple bonnet (a Belgian model) that he still has. It’s not for sale!

Here is a picture gallery of the retrieval and restoration process:

After 3 1/2 years since recovering from Tom Anderson’s field in Summerland, my 1960 ID19 Safari finally returned to the road on April 24, 2021! What a great feeling it is and now I am am hoping for many great D adventures driving it around Canada and the US in the years to come. I am planning a trip to Newfoundland with the ID, ideally next summer and I’d quite like to meet a few other Citroën owners along the way!

Please contact me re Newfie trip. I’m in Annapolis, Nova Scotia and have lots of experience with the pre ’66 Dees. The earliest being a 1956 DS, the engine/transaxle and lots of bits I still have.

Hi The ID19 1967 was my 1st adventure w/ Citroens. I was more @ Reymond than @ driving, but not even my 2007 Lincoln matches its ride! My 2nd was/is a SM 72, which’s still waiting for transmission work… Who’s doing this work in Toronto or GTA? Dany, Toronto

HI — Beautiful restoration. I’m Ken Deal and live in St. Joseph-du-Moine on Cape Breton Island, NS. I’m about five hours north of Peter Fyfe and about 2 hours away from the ferry from North Sydney to Newfoundland. My first Citroen was a brand new 1970 break. I now have a ’72 DS21 Pallas Jubilee Edition. Please stop in on your way to Nfld. ([email protected])

Great project greatly executed, Mark. Must once in our live bring the two écaille blondes together! Cheers!

1969 Citroën ID21 Safari Estate Car Chassis no. 3576509 image 2

Citroën first introduced an estate car or station wagon version of its revolutionary DS and ID in 1958. Built on a longer wheelbase than the saloon, it was known by different names depending on the destination market: Break in France; Safari and Estate in the UK; and Wagon in the USA. Familiales had a third row of seats, while the standard Break had two side-facing seats in the main load area at the rear. This cavernous Citroën ID21 Safari Estate was extensively restored and upgraded by a former owner - a Hungarian DS specialist - before its acquisition by the immediately preceding owner circa 2010. A left-hand drive model, '3576509' is understood to have had its 2,175cc engine converted to run on either petrol or LPG, and its semi-automatic gearbox modified to give five forward speeds. In June 2010 the car was treated to a new nearside rear wheel bearing; tow bar; front brake pads; inner driveshaft gaiters; refurbished wheels; and five new tyres by marque specialist Dave Ashworth of Blackpool. The current vendor purchased the Safari at a UK auction in June 2014, since when it has been re-sprayed in Chapron Blue over grey and a new cylinder head gasket fitted by Woodlinkin Citroën Centre of Nottinghamshire. The original interior features the 'rectangular dial' dashboard; Continental Edison radio; and cream leather upholstery; plus Safari folding rear seats.
