3 fundamentals of correct bike size - 2022 trek madone.

The following chart provides a rule of thumb approach to determine your 2021 Madone bike size based on your height. This is a simple approach to a complex situation, but it is accurate in the majority of cases. Of course, the length of your limbs is not factored into the table below and long or short limbs or torso can play a big role in determining the right bike size for you.

In addition your riding style can influence your choice; if you like a more aggressive bike, you may prefer a smaller frame; if you prefer a more upright position, you may prefer a large frame. If you are 'between sizes', give this consideration when making your selection.

The 2021 Trek Madone is produced in sizes 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62

2021 Trek Madone Road Bike

2022 Trek Madone Road Bike Size / Fit Basics

Before you purchase your new road bike, you need to ensure the frame meets 3 basic size requirements: stand-over, reach, seat height.

1. Stand-over

Stand-over is the measurement of the height of the bikes top-tube from the ground at its midpoint.

Ok, so why is it so important? Simply put, if you are travelling along on your bike and you need to stop in a hurry, you'll have to jump forward, landing on the ground, standing with your legs on each side of the top tube. Having the correct Stand-over will ensure you do not impact your groin area during this situation.

How to test it.

When you stand-over the midpoint of the bike, with shoes on, you should be able to lift the bike up until there is a 2 cm gap between the tyres and the floor - without the frame coming in contact with your groin.

Bike Fit Stand Over

If you are looking at the best size option based on a geometry chart, measure from inner leg to floor (with shoes on), remove 2cm and test that measurement against the bikes geometry chart. For the Trek Madone, this is measurement L in the Geometry diagram below.

Get this one wrong, and you may be in for a world of back pain. Whether that is upper or lower back pain will depend on whether you buy, or are sold , a bike that is too big or too small for you. Buy the correct size bike and your hours of saddle time will actually strengthen your core and back, not hinder it.

The Reach is the distance your hands project forward to comfortably rest on bars and manipulate the brakes and gears.

Bike Fit Reach

How to test it.

The quickest test of correct reach is to sit in the correct riding position on the bike (a trainer is great for this or if that is available, take the bike for a quick ride or balance against a wall with someone's assistance).

Sit on the bike in a neutral position with your hands resting on the hoods (illustrated above) and your head in a natural riding position - eyes looking forward. Now look down at the front wheel hub/axel. If the position is correct the bars should block your view of the hub/axel. If you can see the hub/axel in-front of the bars, the bike is too small.  If you can see the  hub/axel behind the bars, the bike is too large.

Stem length obviously plays a role here. However, if you are buying a bike from a store, it should be equipped with the correct size stem for the frame. Ideally, you should only have to swap stems if you have a particularly long or short torso.

Your saddle can be moved forward or back on the 'rails' to make small adjustments to your reach outcome. If the bike is the correct size for you, you should not have to move it all the way forward or all the way back.

3. Seat Height

Seat height impacts on comfort and performance - correct seat height optimises both. Your seat needs to allow for an efficient and powerful pedal stroke while maintaining you in a balanced, static and comfortable seated position.

It is also important to note that your seat needs to be in the correct position to properly determine your reach (above).

This is a simple and quick way to ensure a powerful and efficient seat height position. Sitting on your bike, rest your heal on your pedal when it is in the lowest (6 O'clock) position.

You need to check two things now and you will need another person to assist with this. Check that your leg is fully and comfortably extended. At the same time, when viewed from behind, your hips should be level. If required, adjust the seat height to achieve the ideal balance of full leg extension and level hip placement. When this is resolved, returning you foot the usual cleated cycling position should achieve the correct amount of knee bend.

One Extra! - Bar Drop

The position of the bars relative to the seat. This is the bike fit positioning that can cause a lot of trouble and one that we recommend determining over time and with the assistance of a professional bike fitter.

If you are new to cycling with average fitness and flexibility, err on the side of positioning your bars at the top of the steerer with one spacer above the stem. This will allow options to lower the bars over time as your fitness, flexibility and riding continue to evolve.

Does this position influence which size bike to purchase? That should be a secondary consideration after first determining which frame geometry is appropriate for you. If your flexibility is limited (or not what it used to be), you may be best to consider a frame with endurance geometry to ensure a higher front end and a more relaxed position on the bike.

2021 Trek Madone Bike Size Key Measurements

If you already own a road bike and are happy with the fit. It is good to know you bike fit basics by measuring your seat height, reach, and bar drop.

Seat Height  - Your seat height is the distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to top of the saddle when running the tape parallel to the seat post. See the purple line in the diagram above.

Bar Reach   - The distance from the front tip of saddle to centre of the bars (where the stem cap contacts with the stem). Keep the tape running parallel to ground. See the green line in the diagram above.

Bar Drop   - The handlebar drop is the distance from the centre of the bars to the centre of the hub. See the red line in the diagram above.

Once you have these recorded, you can then quickly check how your bike setup will work with the bike you are test riding, renting or just throwing a leg over in a store.

Trek Madone SL6 Disc review

The Madone scoops our aero road Bike of the Year award

David Caudery / Immediate Media

Warren Rossiter

Awesome ride; racy handling

A bit weighty

Trek Madone SL6 Disc winner in the Aero Bike of the Year 2020

The major issue with making cutting-edge aero bikes is that it’s expensive to recoup the huge development costs. So how has Trek managed to squeeze the Madone chassis replete with IsoSpeed rear suspension into this price category?

  • Bike of the Year 2020: how we tested
  • Bike of the Year 2020 awards

The answer lies in the front-end as Trek has done away with the expensive integrated bar and stem system and replaced it with a more cost-effective combination of alloy Bontrager Pro stem and Aero VR-CF handlebar.

Cable integration, however, is still tidy because Trek has designed a set of headset spacers and top cap that still route all the cables and hydraulic hoses down the head tube in front of the steerer.

Bike of the Year 2020

The Trek Madone SL6 Disc is part of our annual Bike of the Year test and our Aero Road Bike of the Year winner.

Head to our Bike of the Year hub for the full list of winners, categories and shortlisted bikes, as well as the latest reviews – or read our behind-the-scenes feature on how we tested Bike of the Year 2020 .

The frame is designed around Trek’s KVF tube profiles (Kammtail Virtual Foil), which looks like a shortened aero dynamic wing cross-section with the long tail section chopped, ‘cheating’ the air into believing it’s a long airfoil, making for a less turbulent path through the air.

The idea behind dropping seatstays on modern bike design is two-fold: it minimises the stays, thus reducing drag, and it allows the seat tube and seatpost to have more unsupported length, which allows flex.

Trek with the unique design of the Madone and its IsoSpeed back-end means it doesn’t have to drop the stays for comfort or minimise the size of the stays for flex because IsoSpeed isolates the seat tube from the stays and top tube.

KVF carbon forks on the Trek Madone SL6 Disc

The freedom of the seat tube to move fore and aft is controlled by an elastomer. The tension in the system is adjustable by undoing the Allen head bolt on the damper and the Allen head bolt on the underside of the top tube, then pushing the seat tube forward and sliding the adjuster to your desired setting.

Trek claims that the Madone offers twice the compliance of any of its rivals with the IsoSpeed design, and as soon as you get out on the road it’s easy to see why.

The system eliminates wearing vibrations from poor road surfaces and deals with high-frequency chatter wonderfully well.

Bontrager Elite Aero VR-CF alloy bar on the Trek Madone SL6 Disc

Up front, I expected things to be very different because that deeply bladed aero fork, substantial head tube plus skinny 25c tyres and deep aero wheels don’t promise comfort. So, it was a welcome surprise to discover just how composed the SL6 feels.

The aero-sculpted alloy bar is wrapped with super-thick bar tape and its spot-on ergonomics keep you comfortable. The front end dulls chatter and noise.

Just because the SL6 is a lower-priced version of Trek’s most successful race machine doesn’t mean the ride position is dumbed down either.

The SL6 is still based on its H1.5 geometry that was developed with the Trek-Segafredo race team. On my 58cm bike you have the aggressive ride position imposed by a 581mm stack and 396mm reach paired with a steep 73.8-degree head angle and 73-degree seat.

Seatstays and post on the Trek Madone SL6 Disc

The Madone is a bike designed to go fast, so it’s no surprise that the fork’s trail and offset encourage fast handling.

Bontrager’s carbon Aeolus wheel range extends from WorldTour-proven XXX wheelsets down to the Comp 5 models fitted here.

The Comp 5 is an alloy rim that has a structurally bonded 50mm deep carbon fairing. The centrelock hubs are smooth rolling and the wheel build is tight; the tautness in the wheels and the fast-acting freehub offset the 1,860g weight for a pair.

Shimano Ultegra drivetrain on the Trek Madone SL6 Disc

The wheels are tubeless ready but the R3 tyres fitted are not, so tubeless is an option.

The rim’s internal 18mm width is a good match for the 25c tyres. The bikes’s 8.73kg complete weight is more than I’d like to see on paper, but it doesn’t ride like a heavy bike: the chassis’ composed manner on poor roads means you can go faster and the efficiency of the design, including the wheels, means it holds speed well.

Like the majority of bikes in this year’s Bike of the Year , Trek has put its faith in the Ultegra group and it performs just as well as expected.

In all, the SL6 is a composed race machine with a compliant ride that balances fast handling and comfort unlike any other aero-road bike around.

Charles-Joseph Minard’s map of Napoleon’s flawed Russian campaign: An ever-current classic

Some data visualisations can be perceived as something more than figurative representations of numerical or statistical analyses, and certain examples of infographics give us something more than simply visual information.

Often it is the design that fascinates us, and even the idea it expresses.

Sometimes it is also the objective that fascinates us.

In the history of data visualisations, there are some examples which stand out in that way, and constantly arouse such attentions.

The Frenchman Charles-Joseph Minard’s figurative maps of the French army’s loss during Napoleon’s campaign against Russia in 1812-13 is one of the field’s classics.

About this blog

Research on data visualization

Graphs, charts and colorful maps. We meet them almost every day, in the news media, in the textbooks and in the information campaigns. The amount of data in society is rapidly growing and it is becoming easier to visualize them.

How do we read such data visualizations? And how are they made? Do they make the news and the textbooks more objective and informative, or are they perceived more or less as decorations?

In this blog, nine researchers in a project administered from the University of Agder, Norway, ask how we better can understand and critically evaluate data visualizations, those of us who are neither mathematicians nor designers.

To learn more about the project, please visit our website, indvil.org .

Minard’s map was originally published in 1869 with the title Carte figurative des pertes successives en hommes de l’Armée Francais dans la campagne de Russe 1812-1813 .

It shows how the army which, at the border to Russia at the start of June 1812, comprised of 422 000 men from the whole of Europe, suffered great defeats during the course of the campaign under Napoleon’s leadership. After he was forced to turn back at Moscow with his remaining 100 000, his army then totalled just 10 000 soldiers when he arrived back at his point of departure a half year after they started.

Minard presents the army’s advance in the form of a graph which both represents a geographic movement over time, and its decreasing size. In the combination of the graph and the (admittedly very minimalistically drawn) geographic map, an “flow map” emerges, which was Minard’s invention.

The route east towards Moscow is drawn as a beige line, whilst the return is marked out in black.

The breadth of the line denotes the number of men, and this diminishes dramatically in the months before December, when the army reaches the river Neman, at the Polish-Russian border.

Not explanatory, but with narrative power

The experience of the dramatic difference between the number of soldiers standing on the border to Russia, ready to enter the country, and those that were left standing when the campaign was over, is reinforced by the fact that the start and the finish coincide geographically.

Instead of seeing the reduction along an axis of time alone from June to December, or – just as it perhaps might have been done today – represented with human-shaped pictograms which each, separately, represent x number of soldiers, the defeats would be presented based on the army’s movements through a geographical area. Every struggle and battle fought is expressed in the way that the graph contracts.

What happened during these battles, how long did they last, and how did they go on from there?

Why does one flank deviate from the main line?

Minard’s map cannot explain these things, but it can inspire further exploration in reference and history books.

When Minard’s map is perceived of as owning such a clear narrative power in its delineation of a catastrophic campaign, as Edward Tufte writes in his book, Beautiful Evidence (2006: 132), it is because of this seemingly simple but highly effective graphic presentation. In the map’s combination of data connected to change over time and space, the presentation is imbued with a distinctly narrative quality regarding the French army’s defeat in the campaign against Russia.

In this narrative, Minard adds an extra dimension: Not only did Napoleon’s men meet a threat from the Russian army, but also from the weather. It was icy cold in October and November 1812 with temperatures down as low as -30 degrees Celcius, according to Minard’s graph. It doesn’t require a great deal of imagination on the part of those collating the information that the map gives to see that many of those who died on their way home died from the cold.

An inspirational map

The map’s elegantly simple, but at the same time complex, presentation of a temporal course in a static form of expression, has given it a very particular status (Edward Tufte has gone on to call it probably the best graphic that has ever been made).

Minard began to design graphic presentations in particular on thematic maps first after he had become a pensioner from his work as a civil engineer with particular responsibility for the development of bridges and road networks. Many of the maps display statistical information about a subject with geographical bases: The export of French wine out of France (where was the wine exported to?), of coal from England, overviews of food production in the various French districts and so on.

Over the course of the years, Minard’s maps, and in particular that depicting Napoleon’s campaign, have fascinated and inspired many of his successors. In ‘Visions and Re-Visions of Charles Joseph Minard’, from 2002, Michael Friendly writes about how the compact assembly of different variables was something that was in particular attempted to be recreated in trials of interactive digital data visualisations in the 1990s. Digital adaptions, versioning or the redesign of Minard’s work resulted in variants in which the map, in its digital representation, became clickable and opened up the possibility of providing more combined or added information.

trek madone sl 6 size chart

Other versions presented more dynamic and integrated versions of the variables time, geographical place and temperature than the analogue map had done – and in this way perhaps also strengthened the notion that temperature played a completely integral role.

trek madone sl 6 size chart

Friendly concludes the article, however, by establishing that, even if there was great potential in digital revisions and versioning, one could only hope that Minard’s original design would continue to inspire. And it certainly has, like Norbert Landsteiner’s interactive chart .

Looking with a gaze from the east

Minard has really attempted to inspire, and a very interesting contribution to the succession of variations on the original map is ‘1812: When Napoleon Ventured East’, created by the Russian news agency TASS in 2017.

(Video: Preview of TASS' production)

This prize-winning version can be understood as a comprehensive interactive commentary to Minard’s map in which TASS’s data visualisations studio, under the auspices of Alexei Novichkov, carries out a critical analysis of Minard’s French version, based on the sources and historical analyses of the time (Minard himself built his version based on five contemporary French written sources, referred to briefly in the map’s legend).

In ‘1812: When Napoleon Ventured East’, the presentation of Napoleon’s campaign is considered from a Russian perspective, which by necessity provides the story about the war with a catastrophic result another aspect: The Russian army’s participation in that which, in Russian historical writing, has been given the name ‘The Patriotic War’. In this version, the Russians are added to the graphic representations, and the French loss is placed alongside those on the Russian side.

trek madone sl 6 size chart

The version explains in detail, including with graphic presentations and with the help of quotations from French and Russian war memoirs, how the French army met with challenges that resulted in Napoleon’s much used and, until that point, successful military strategy did not work – with fatal results.

‘1812: When Napoleon Ventured East’ provides Minard’s version with nuances, and gives us much more detailed accounts than the one single map alone can do. It takes correspondingly much longer to acquaint oneself with exactly what the campaign involved in the format that the designers chose for the version: A comprehensive, dynamic internet article. The map and the article are two versions of the same historical event whereby the most recent complements the original with an alternative perspective and more information.

For example, ‘1812: When Napoleon Ventured East’ draws great attention to how Napoleon’s army, even at the start, suffered from a poor supply of food, and that this became an increasingly large problem. Including the weather as a variable, as Minard did, provided opportunities to see a clear correlation between the cold and the number of deaths.

However, the presentation says nothing as to whether there was a causal relationship between the two. In this respect, the Russian version contributes with one further important variable: The lack of food, in addition to the accounts of the skirmishes between the two armies in the course of the campaign. Perhaps these two were equally important explanations for the deaths, as the weather?

Napoleon went east, but where do today’s foreign fighters come from?

Charles Joseph Minard has not solely inspired presentations of the same historical event, or to a redesign of the map itself. Minard’s way of combining flow charts and maps in figurative presentations have become established as a conventions within data visualisation and infographics: ‘the flow map’, mentioned in the introduction. In this way it is difficult to point out what are, and what cannot be, specific actualisations of Minard’s method. But then examples emerge in which the source of inspiration seems to be evident, such as in the Italian Alessandro Zotta and Density DesignLab’s ‘On their way’, from 2016.

trek madone sl 6 size chart

‘On their way’ (published originally in Italian in the newspaper Corriere della Sera’s Sunday supplement) provides, in a reflection of Minard’s design, a graphic presentation of the foreign fighters’ routes from their own home countries to join IS, and then their ways to travel home again.

In terms of colours, those of the original presentation are turned on their head: Black marks those travelling out, whilst yellow-brown marks those returning home. Zotta’s presentation operates, incidentally, with other variables than those that Minard used, because the theme is, after all, only loosely related.

Furthermore: The large number of sending countries, and the fact that IS cannot be placed geographically in a traditional sense, result in the map itself being more of an abstract character. The source of inspiration seems, however, to be easy to trace if one is aware of the classics of data visualisation’s design history.

Data visualisations taking a particular position

Edward Tufte understands Minard’s map as a clear anti-war declaration, with its conspicuous presentation of the loss of human life.

This way of interpreting the intentions behind the design can draw on support from the map that Minard chose to publish together with the presentation of Napoleon’s campaign: The Carthaginian general Hannibal’s crossing from Spain, through France and over the Alps on the way to Rome in 218 B.C.

In this map, too, attention is directed towards the human lives that were lost en route (of the 94 000 soldiers to leave Spain, 26 000 reached Torino, according to Minard’s map).

In the same way that Minard allows us to construct a notion of the historical events based on the variables that are included on the map, where the icy cold Autumn months during which Napoleon’s retreat took place create the basis of a narrative about the remainders of an army that fought as much against the cold as the enemy, the synthesis of the two maps allows us the possibility of thinking that what Minard wanted to show, was what warfare first and foremost is: Loss of human life.

Getting people excited about their data one visual at a time™, dataviz history: charles minard’s flow map of napoleon’s russian campaign of 1812, dataviz history: edward tufte, charles minard, napoleon and the russian campaign of 1812 – part 5.

Charles Minard’s Flow Map of Napoleon’s Russian Campaign of 1812

Charles Minard's Flow Map of Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812

Minard’s chart shows six types of information : geography, time, temperature, the course and direction of the army’s movement, and the number of troops remaining. The widths of the gold (outward) and black (returning) paths represent the size of the force, one millimetre to 10,000 men. Geographical features and major battles are marked and named, and plummeting temperatures on the return journey are shown along the bottom.

The chart tells the dreadful story with painful clarity: in 1812, the Grand Army set out from Poland with a force of 422,000; only 100,000 reached Moscow; and only 10,000 returned. The detail and understatement with which such horrifying loss is represented combine to bring a lump to the throat. As men tried, and mostly failed, to cross the Bérézina river under heavy attack, the width of the black line halves: another 20,000 or so gone. The French now use the expression “C’est la Bérézina” to describe a total disaster.

In 1871, the year after Minard died, his obituarist cited particularly his graphical innovations: “For the dry and complicated columns of statistical data, of which the analysis and the discussion always require a great sustained mental effort, he had substituted images mathematically proportioned, that the first glance takes in and knows without fatigue, and which manifest immediately the natural consequences or the comparisons unforeseen.” The chart shown here is singled out for special mention: it “inspires bitter reflections on the cost to humanity of the madnesses of conquerors and the merciless thirst of military glory”.

What does the map show us [1]

  • Forces visual comparisons (the upper lighter band showing the large army going to Moscow vs. the narrow dark band showing the small army returning).
  • Shows causality (the temperature chart at the bottom).
  • Captures multivariate complexity (size of army, location, direction, temperature, and time).
  • Integrates text and graphic into a coherent whole.
  • Illustrate high quality content (complete and accurate data, presented to support Minard’s  argument against war).
  • Place comparisons adjacent to each other, not sequentially (people forget if they have to go from page to page ).
  • Use the smallest effective differences (i.e., avoid bold colors, heavy lines, distracting labels and scales).

Let’s look at the map in detail

Since Minard’s map is in French, I have provided an Englsh language version for us to use as we discusss the flow of Napoleon’s march in detail. [2]

Crossing the Niemen River – So It Begins

5-26-2013 8-37-35 AM

On 23 June , the Prussian major (and later military theorist) Karl von Clausewitz, who had recently entered Alexander’s service, reached the Drissa camp (northwest of Polotsk on the Dvina, near modern Verkhniadzvinsk in Belarus) to inspect the site and report on the progress being made on its defensive works and fortifications. He remained unconvinced of its defensive qualities and said so to Alexander on 28 June . Despite the fact that the camp had appeared central to Russian strategy pre-invasion, it would prove of little worth once the Russian forces had withdrawn from the western frontier.

News of the Grande Armée’s advance guard crossing the Niemen ( 24 June, 1812 ) reached Alexander and Barclay de Tolly that same day, late in the evening. The order to withdraw to the Drissa camp was issued shortly afterwards, and Barclay’s units fell back.

Between 26 and 27 June , the order to retreat back from borders spread to each of the Russian corps commanders. Although most of the 1st Western Army’s withdrawal was relatively untroubled, General Dokhturov’s 6th corps, stationed between Lida and Grodno, was almost cut off by the Grande Armée’s crossing of the Niemen and Davout’s troops making for Minsk. Only by force marching did the 6th corps avoid the advancing French troops and reach Drissa unmolested. It was also on 26 June that Alexander dispatched a letter proposing talks with Napoleon, provided that the French emperor retired back over the border. The messenger was held up by Davout and only succeeded in reaching Berthier and Napoleon at the end of the month. The evacuation of Vilna began late on 26 June : by the time Napoleon received Alexander’s messenger and letter, Vilna had been occupied by the Grande Armée. Barclay de Tolly left the city early on 28 June , having destroyed the remaining depots as well as the bridge across the Dvina. Napoleon’s advance troops arrived about an hour later.

is there any estimates for how long it took Minard to create this visuak?

Let me research this. There is a book out specially about the map, so I am planning on ordering it and see if it tells me how long in there. I have been wanting to order it anyway.

Hello Michael and thank you for your reply. I called Tufte’s office and no one on his staff knows the answer and they inferred that Tufte does not know Interesting
