From these two hills, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Celje and the surrounding area.

It is best to conclude your tour of Celje in a modern pub or restaurant in the old town centre.

Celje [dead link] is a city on the Savinja River in the Pohorje-Savinjska region of Slovenia .

Map

Celje is halfway between Ljubljana and Maribor on the A1 highway, a one-hour drive from either. It is also served by Ljubljana - Maribor railway line with trains running twice an hour on workdays.

The town has a population of about 50,000, but it's very compact. The best way to get around is on foot. Almost everything's within walking distance.

celje tourist office

The downtown part of Celje is very old, and very beautiful. There are two churches, as well as an "Old Celje" section.

Beside medieval remains, Celje is also famous for its multitude of remains from the ancient Roman Empire (from 1st century C.E.), when it was a rich Roman settlement called Celeia . The Celje Regional Museum holds remains from gravesites, roads etc. Remains of various buildings and the ancient city walls are also scattered around the town itself.

You can see an office guide from the town's tourism agency here [dead link] .

  • The obvious thing to do in Celje is simply walk, and take in the amazing views of all the historic buildings. Spend a whole day just walking around and taking pictures. In some places, they have the original cobblestone roads, which are beautiful. The old part of town is rather sleepy, so there's usually not much to do besides sightseeing.
  • Football: NK Celje play soccer in PrvaLiga, the top tier. Their home ground Stadion Z'dežele (capacity 13,000) is 3 km north of town centre.

Shopping malls with movie theatre and the fairground are located some 2 km north of the centre, along Mariborska rd.

  • Metropol , café and cinema (kavarna and kino): at every hour of the day, the Metropol is a good choice. It is located in the pedestrian precinct, Stanetova 15.
  • MCC Hostel . Opened in 2010, every room of the hostel has been specially designed by a local artist. Prices range from €18 in dorms to €29 in single rooms.
  • Hotel Astor . The hotel itself is nothing spectacular, but the location is totally ideal. It is on the outer part of town, which makes driving to it a piece of cake. However, it's close to three supermarkets, the pharmacy, as well as two banks. There is a restaurant in the hotel with complimentary breakfast consisting of croissants, yogurt-type foods, cereal, and deli meats. The dinner menu includes venison, stallion (real horse meat), fish and lamb.
  • Hotel Štorman . Štorman is situated across the street from the town's main bus station, 500 m from the main train station, and is an easy walk to the shopping mall. If your after a cheaper stay than the more expensive hotels in town, this is where to go. A little noise from the train line and dual carriageway outside is expected but even with a room overlooking these, little noise gets in.

Where history comes alive

Aquaint central European town that proudly celebrates its long turbulent history and rich cultural heritage, with 50,000 inhabitants Celje is the third largest city in Slovenia and an increasingly popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. Over the past two millennia the city has seen its fair share of ups and downs. After becoming a boom town during Roman times, it was virtually absent from the historical record until the 12th century, and then a regional powerhouse under the rule of the ill-fated Counts of Celje, only to take an historical backseat again until its re-emergence during the 20th century.

Nowadays the city manages to perfectly blend its laid-back provincial spirit and wealth of cultural sights and activities, with modern develop- ment and an ample selection of hotels, restaurants and shopping centres, as well as a flourishing arts scene and active nightlife. The surrounding municipalities of Laško, Dobrna, Vojnik and Štore all compliment their larger neighbour with unique and varied attractions of their own. From world-class health resorts and spas to charming tourist farms and idyllic hilltop villages, the region is brimming possibilities for visitors. Located less than an hour’s drive from the capital Ljubljana, Celje and its surroundings are a weekend away just waiting to happen!

Old Celje Castle

celje tourist office

Arguably the grandest castle in all of Slovenia, while it isn’t as completely restored as Ljubljana castle in thecapital and doesn’t possess the breathtaking alpine cliff top location of that in Bled, its sprawling grounds, eventful history, sweeping views over the city and surrounding countryside, and the generally imposing appearance of its partially restored fortress walls and towers are truly unique amongst any and all of its domestic rivals. Originally built by the Heunburg family on the hills to the southeast of the bustling medieval market town of Celje in either the late 12th or early 13th centuries, it eventually came into the possession of the Lords of Sanneck in 1333, who became known as the Counts of Celje from 1341 onwards and were the most important medieval aristocrats in the territory of present-day Slovenia. Over the next hundred years the Counts rebuilt, expanded and greatly improved the castle and its grounds, however, when their rule ended with the murder of the last male heir in 1456, the property was bequeathed to the Habsburg monarchy in accordance with a previously signed inheritance agreement.

Today the castle is the most visited tourist site in Celje with over 70,000 visitors per year, and is also popular with locals, especially during the weekends and for weddings. The grounds are entered from a gate in the southernmost fortifications, where there’s a fully-stocked branch of the Celje Tourist Infomation Office and a little further along a pleasant café.

The central part of the site is dominated by the rebuilt Fredrick’s Tower and an open air theatre, which is the main venue for the various performances that take place during the summer long Living History medieval festival. After crossing a wooden bridge over the one-time inner moat, you reach the upper part of the castle, where most of the buildings are located and where you’ll find mesmerising views of the city below and rolling hills and valleys stretching to the alps in the distance. The entire grounds, including some dozen or more sites, are well marked with informative signs giving information and history in both Slovene and English. To reach Celje’s old castle, take the first turn south of the main train station passing under the tracks, cross the bridge and at the roundabout go right and follow the signs up into the hills. While many people recommend walking to the top, be aware that it’s a deceptively lengthy undertaking (around 45 minutes) and the winding road is largely without pavement. Alternatively, a taxi is only around €4 and for our money. Celje, Cesta na Grad 78, tel. +386 (0)3 544 36 90

Celeia: a town beneath today’s town

While the area of present-day Celje was first settled as far back as the Iron Age between the 9th and 6th centuries BC, it first flourished after being annexed by the Roman Empire and given the status of an independent town during the 1st century AD. However, after several hundred years the town had sunk back into relative obscurity by the 6th century. This long and rich history of settlement has left Celje with quite an archaeological legacy, some of which can be viewed on an underground tour through the cellars of the Princes Palace on Trg celjskih Knezov 8, tel. +386 (0)3 428 09 62, +386 (0)31 612 618, [email protected] , www.pokmuz-ce.si.

Town forest treehouse

celje tourist office

Slovenia is one of the most forested nations in all of Europe, which means that you’re never far from wooded nature – even if you’re in the centre of the country’s third largest city. St mary’s shrine

celje tourist office

Standing in the middle of quaint cobblestoned Glavni Trg, the shrine is one of the most intricate public monuments in the city. A golden haloed Mary is atop a single central column, surrounded at the base by three of her fellow saints: St Rocus, St Florian and St Joseph, who are the patron saints against the plague, against fire and of families and workers respectively. The structure was originally erected in the 16th century for rather more dubious purposes, namely as a sham-ing pillar to punish criminals and other petty offenders. Glavni Trg.

Tourist information centre

Celje has opened a new Tourist Information Centre, which is an im-portant asset for the city centre. Together with a striking pavilion it represents an interesting tourist destination for foreign and local visitors, a presentation of cultural heritage and a place where tour-ists as well as residents of Celje and other local visitors can find all the necessary information about the city in one place. The Tourist Information Centre also offers an eyecatching, rich selection of local, regional and national souvenirs. A special section of the Tour-ist Information Centre is dedicated to local artists who work in the town’s Art Quarter. Glavni trg 17, [email protected] , www.celeia.info.

15 Best Things to Do in Celje (Slovenia)

Slovenia’s third city is in the Lower Savinja Valley in the embrace of tall forest-coated hills. Crowning one peak to the south is Celje’s Old Castle, the commanding seat of the Counts of Celje who ruled much of Slovenian territory in medieval times. The sight of the city from these walls is epic, and the castle’s towers tell stories of family intrigue and star-crossed love in the time of the Counts.

Down the slope, the historic centre of Celje is rich with mansions and grand municipal buildings in the Revivalist style, as well as two much older palaces that are both departments for the Celje Regional Museum.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Celje :

1. Celje Castle

Celje Castle

The Counts of Celje had the most powerful dynasty in Slovenia in the 14th and 15th centuries and their seat of power was this brooding castle just south of the modern city.

The hilltop enclosure took shape in the 1330s and kept an entire town inside its outer ward, making it Slovenia’s largest fortification at the time.

In the complex is the four-storey Friderik Tower, where Count Herman II imprisoned his own son Friderik II after he fell in love with the wrong woman.

The castle has been refurbished and installed with a tourist information centre, a cafe and wooden walkways to help you get about.

The scenery from the walls intoxicating, and there’s a complete view of modern Celje and the confluence of the Savinja and Voglajna.

2. The Old Landgraviate Building

Old Landgraviate Building

Celje’s finest Renaissance building dates to the turn of the 17th century and backs onto the city’s southern walls beside the Savinja.

Outside the most striking feature is the long arcade and first floor gallery on the facade, while within there’s the Celje Ceiling, which was painted at the Renaissance-Baroque transition.

Inside is a branch of the Celje Regional Museum, presenting furniture, woodcuts, coins, paintings from the 1200s to the 1900s.

There’s also a timeline of art and architecture in the city, from Gothic to Historicist, as well as on overview of regional savoir-faire like weaving, beekeeping, pottery and basket-making.

Celje’s Roman history is also laid bare downstairs in the lapidarium, which has sculpted and inscribed stones going back 2,000 years.

3. Prince’s Mansion

Prince's Mansion

Another residence for the Counts of Celje, this property has been recognised as a national monument.

After their line died out in the 1456 this palace had many different roles, one of which was as a barracks during the rule of Empress Maria Theresa in the 1700s.

The house is also now a site for the Celje Regional Museum: The best bit is in the basement where some 1000 square metres of Ancient Celeia’s paved roads and buildings have been excavated and can be viewed from footbridges.

4. Museum of Recent History

Museum of Recent History

This museum about contemporary life in Celje has a few locations around the city, including a former Minorite monastery used by the Nazis and Josip Pelkan’s photography studio.

The headquarters is the Neoclassical former town hall on Prešernova Ulica.

In this building you’ll get a summary of life in the city across three generations in the 20th century.

A furnished bourgeois apartment is recreated to give a sense of Celje’s new middle class in the beginning of the 1900s.

And upstairs there’s a “Tradesmen’s Street”, where all of Cleje’s old-time businesses are presented, complete with authentic instruments and materials.

5. Josip Pelikan’s Skylight Photo Studio

Josip Pelikan's Skylight Photo Studio

This building on Razlagova Street is listed as a Slovene cultural monument and managed by the Museum of Recent History.

It dates to the first decades of the 20th century and was where the much-loved photographer Josip Pelikan worked his magic.

On the upper floor is one of the few remaining skylight studios in Europe, while downstairs the darkroom and retouching room are exactly as they were where Pelikan passed away in the 1970s.

A host of photograph apparatus has been preserved, like glass plates, developing tanks, lamps and historic cameras, and there’s a fantastic exhibition of his portraits that capture Celje’s citizens across 67 years.

6. Celje Cathedral

Celje Cathedral

The city’s cathedral is a rather muted Gothic monument from the beginning of the 14th century and has been altered many times since then.

The most recent works took place in 1858 when the church was given its current Neo-Gothic style.

But history geeks might find a few things to hold their attention for a while: The ceilings on the nave and choir have frescoes painted in the 1300s and 1400s.

A little newer is the side alter for St Francis Xavier, designed in the luxuriant Baroque style in 1743.

7. City Walls

Celje

The last remaining fragments of Celje’s defensive system is still in place beside the water by the Old Landgraviate Building.

These were started in 1450 and wouldn’t be completed until 1473. They stood strong for 300 years but come the end of the 18th century they were no longer needed they were sold off in an auction.

The biggest chunks are on the Savinja waterfront and along Vodnikova Street.

The one of the four towers to survive to the present day is the Water Tower at the southeast corner of the walls.

There’s an neat historical curiosity on its wall in the form of a plaque from 1672 to indicate the water level during a great flood that year.

8. Sights around Celje

Holy Mary Column, Celje

The centre of Celje is compact and also walkable, as a few of the streets around the City Hall are pedestrianised.

The city has that late-19th-century Historicist design, with regal stucco-clad townhouses and municipal buildings.

One such monument is the Neo-Renaissance Narodni Dom from 1896, while the Celjski Dom is from 1907 and sticks out for its Neo-Gothic tower.

Slovenia’s greatest 20th-century architect Jože Plečnik also drew up the majestic People’s Loan Society in 1929 and with three storeys of balconies supported by columns on its facade.

Much older is St Mary’s Column erected in the Main Square in 1776 on the spot where criminals used to be executed.

9. Celje Adventure Park

Celje Adventure Park

If you’re searching for something fun and active for kids to get up to, this attraction opened Celjska Koča in 2014. On a wooded hillside there’s an adventure course with planks, nets, climbing walls, zip-lines and various rope bridges, all raised above the forest floor and attached to tree trunks.

The park is made up of three courses, Blue, Red and Black, and kids as young as five can take part.

They’ll kitted out with helmets and harnesses and will be carefully supervised.

10. Šmartinsko Jezero

Šmartinsko Jezero

In 1970 the Koprivnica River was dammed about five kilometres up from Celje, creating a large reservoir that has become a favourite beauty spot.

The lake is convenient and accessible if you want to see more of the idyllic countryside near the city.

Walkers can set out on woodland trails around the water, sections of which are on raised footbridges.

In winter the water freezes over, while in summer there’s a boathouse renting out all manner of vessels.

You could hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard for an hour or two, while families can take a pedalo out onto the lake and dive into the water to cool off.

11. Celje Marketplace

Celje Marketplace

In the north of the Old Town, the city’s market drew international acclaim in architecture circles when it was redesigned in 2009. The firm Arhitektura Krušec led the design, which comprises a steel pavilion with an irregular roof to allow as much natural light into the market as possible.

The project was shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe Award the year it was completed.

The best day to come is Saturday when the organic market is in full swing, but the rest of the time it’s a good place to do your grocery shopping, grabbing fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat and homemade delicacies.

12. Artistic Quarter

Celje Artistic Quarter

Celje has a vibrant contemporary art scene that has been nourished by the local government.

At the start of the 2000s the city invited artists to set up shop in the old, empty buildings on Na Okopih and Gosposka Streets to build a new art quarter.

Crammed into this small quarter around a square are a host of studios and workshops, and the place to see their work is AQ Gallery, also in this area.

The gallery opened in 2013 and puts on exhibitions of photography, sculpture, painting and graphic art, as well as musical performances.

13. Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art

Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art

You can keep in that arty vein by dropping by the Gallery of Contemporary Art, which is part of the Prince’s Mansion complex.

This gallery stages specially curated temporary shows on themes as wide-ranging as post-feminist theory, wartime reminiscence and the phenomenon of death in contemporary society.

Despite their focussed subject matter, these exhibitions will bring you face to face with some of the most important art made in Slovenia since the Second World War.

Some heavyweights of 20th-century Slovenian art have been represented here like Stane Jagodič, Zoran Mušič and Marijan Tršar.

14. Celje – Podčetrtek Heritage Train

Podčetrtek Heritage Train

Celje was the first city in Slovenia to have a railway line, laid in 1846 and running to Grobelno around 15 kilometres southeast of the city.

By the 20th century this was extended and joined up with a region network.

But you can still ride that historic track once a week on Saturdays in summer on a stream train that shuttles down to Podčetrtek on the Croatian border.

Setting off from Celje’s graceful 19th-century terminal, the journey takes just under an hour and weaves through some gorgeous scenery and past historical landmarks.

Once you’re in Podčetrtek you could take a detour to Olimje, famed for its colourful Renaissance castle.

15. Traditional Food

Mlinci

In autumn, apples are a point of pride in Celje, and come totally untreated by insecticides or preservatives.

And if you find yourself in Celje in winter you might notice the word “koline” on menus and typical restaurants.

This refers to pigs that are slaughtered in this season, producing fresh cuts of pork, krvavice (black pudding) and a range of sausages, both cooked and cured.

A festive dish is mlinci, a kind of flatbread that is baked, broken into pieces and mixed with stock or soup to soften it.

On the sweet side, potica is a kind of nut roll, normally baked around Christmas and Easter but available in other seasons too.

There are a few different fillings but the festive favourite+ at Christmas is walnut, honey, vanilla and cinnamon.

Celje travel guide

Slovenia’s third-largest city has a pleasant old town and tremendous views from its castle.

Celje was built by the Romans in the 1st century AD as Celeia, a prosperous, densely populated, walled town on the Roman road from Aquileia to Pannonia on the River Savinja 74km (46 miles) northeast of Ljubljana . Celje (pronounced tselyeh ) enjoyed a second period of glory as a principality under the wealthy Counts of Celje during the Middle Ages. In 1456 it came under the Habsburgs, where it remained until 1918.

Places to visit in Celje

Old castle - the largest castle in slovenia.

The ruins of the medieval Old Castle (Stari grad) perched on a 400m (1,300ft) high rock, 2km (1 mile) southeast of town, is Celje’s best-known landmark and the largest castle complex in Slovenia. Built by the Counts of Celje, one of Central Europe’s most powerful noble families, the ruins are set within extensive walls. The most intact building is the 14th-century, four-storey Frederick’s Tower (Friderikov stolp), from which there are excellent views. In summer, medieval re-enactments are staged here.

The historic Old Town

Celje’s other sights lie in the old town, a pleasant provincial mix of Renaissance, Baroque and 20th-century buildings and squares. At Prešernova 17, the Museum of Modern History (Muzej novejše zgodovine) examines life in 20th-century Celje. The Children’s Museum here has toys, prams, plus a workshop and playroom.

Close to the river in a fine Renaissance building, at Muzejski trg 1, the Celje Regional Museum (Pokrajinski muzej Celje) is noted for the Celje Ceiling, decorated with early 17th-century frescos.

For evidence of Celje’s Roman past, visit Šempeter, 12km (8 miles) west of town. Here, along a 300m (1,000ft) long section of the Roman road that once ran between Ljubljana and Celje, is the Roman Necropolis (Rimska nekropola), which has well-preserved, 1st–3rd century AD marble tombs of local Roman dignitaries.

#1 Tour Celje Castle

View From The Castle, Celje, Slovenia

The Celje Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Slovenia and a must see sight! The impressive fortification – which has a fascinating history – sits on a hilltop offering expansive views of the Savinja River and Old Town Celje.

Celje Castle History

Defensive Frederick's Tower, Celje Castle, Celje, Slovenia

The oldest part of Celje Castle dates to the 1100s. When it was built, it was just a simple structure consisting of one small building, a courtyard and ramparts. Since then, the castle has changed form – and ownership – several times over. Before visiting Celje Castle, it helps to have an understanding of its long and intriguing history.

The Castle and the Counts of Celje

View of the Castle from Celje, Slovenia

When the castle changed ownership to the Counts of Celje in the 14th century, it was expanded to include residential quarters. The Counts also built the distinctive 75-foot-tall defense tower with walls that are 10-feet thick.

The importance of the Celje Castle increased in the 15th century when two Counts of Celje were elevated to the rank of Princes of the Holy Roman Empire. However, it was short-lived. The male blood line of the Counts of Celje ended in the year 1456 and all of their estates– including the castle – were transferred to the Habsburgs.

Fun Fact : The tower is nicknamed Frederick’s Tower because Count of Celje Frederick II was imprisoned inside it after defying his father. Frederick was only freed when it was time for him to become his father’s successor.

Celje Castle Expansion Under the Habsburgs

Castle View from the Walls, Celje, Slovenia

Defensive expansion of Celje Castle continued under the Habsburgs, with additions of an outer wall, military facilities and trenches. In the 16th century, new ramparts were built, and the Castle Celje was redesigned as a fortress and place of refuge for citizens in times of war. However, by the 18th century, the castle was left uninhabited. Rather than preserving the relic, parts of it were looted and used as building materials for other structures in the region.

Visiting Celje Castle

Visiting Celje Castle in Celje, Slovenia

Today, Celje Castle has been renovated and the fort and grounds are open to be explored by visitors. Frederick’s Tower can be climbed for 360˚ views of the surrounding area and green hills in the distance. The Tower above Pelikan’s Trail, built in the 16th century, is also open to guests and has interesting displays. The oldest part of the castle hosts a medieval playground (of sorts) and fantastic views of the city of Celje.

Travelers can join a guided tour or explore on their own. Check the current Celje Castle Price and hours of operation and consider buying your tickets in advance of your visit.

An on-site cafe provides refreshments, which is great for a coffee, but we recommend eating at one of the top restaurants in Celje (we share our suggestions below).

#2 What To See in City Center Celje

Walking the pedestrian streets of Celje, Slovenia

While it was the Old Castle in Celje that prompted us to visit, we were compelled to venture into the city center during our day trip – and were not disappointed! We are sharing a quick history of the area, followed by our recommendations of the top things to see in Celje City Centre.

History of Celje

Old Town Shops, Celje, Slovenia

The region of Celje has been inhabited since 300 B.C.; first by the Celts, then by the Romans. It was during the Middle Ages and the reign of the Counts of Celje, however, that it was developed as an economic center.

In 1846, the railway was constructed, connecting Celje and Central Slovenia to Vienna and Trieste – and, thus, the rest of Europe. As it is today, the city of Celje is a combination of preserved past and an urbanized center.

Celje Town Centre

Building in the City Center, Celje, Slovenia

Although our time was short, we were able to see many of Celje highlights on a looping walk through the city and along the River Savinja,

City Hall, Tourist Information, Celje, Slovenia

Built between 1580 and 1603 as part of the city walls, the Old Counts’ Mansion is a beautiful Renaissance structure. Inside, visitors will find the famed ‘Celje Ceiling.’ The mansion houses the Provincial Museum of Celje and the lapidary is part of the Regional Celje Museum.
