Celebrity Cruises Mobile App: Expedited Boarding and More

If you have ever cruised before it is possible you have experienced a long drawn out boarding process. Thanks to the Celebrity Cruises App you don’t have to worry about slow moving embarkation lines anymore!

The cruise line has started offering an expedited boarding process for cruisers who check in using the cruise line’s mobile app on the Edge and Summit. We used it on a recent cruise and it took us less than 10 minutes to drop off our luggage, go through security and get to our stateroom!

We were so impressed by the ease of the embarkation process and the other features of the app, but were also puzzled that so few people seemed to be utilizing it.

In this article we will be sharing information about the app along with the benefits of using it. We believe this app really added to our overall cruise experience and hope Celebrity continues to expand the Expedited Arrival process throughout it’s fleet.

Initial Skepticism

We had heard from prior Celebrity cruisers that the company had been working on a mobile app to enhance the overall cruising experience. We were highly encouraged to utilize the app, especially for the check in process. We had poor experiences trying to use cruise ship mobile apps with other cruise companies previously, so in the beginning we were a little skeptical.

About a month prior to our cruise we finally downloaded the app from the app store and completed the check in process. It was at this time that we realized Celebrity’s vision with the app – hassle free boarding and a technologically enhanced on board experience.

When it was time for us to embark on our recent cruise, the app did not disappoint. We dropped our bags, went through the Expedited Arrival process and were in our stateroom in less than 10 minutes! Keep reading to find out how to download the app and complete the check in process to qualify for the Expedited Arrival process.

How to Check In For a Cruise on the Celebrity Cruises App

Once on your mobile phone, access Google Play (Android) or App Store (Apple) and search “Celebrity Cruises”. The app is free and is called Celebrity Cruises (Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.) Currently the icon is shades of aqua with a white X in the middle.

Once downloaded, open the app. It should prompt you for your last name, date of birth and reservation number. Once you provide this information the app will locate your reservation and load your your ship and sailing information.

At this time, ships that support the Expedited Arrival process include: Edge and Summit. Ships that are supported by the additional app features include: Apex, Constellation, Edge, Equinox, Millenium, Reflection, Silhouette and Summit.

Once your reservation has been loaded in the app you will have access to many functions like ship floor plans, port excursions and online check in.

Prior to clicking on the link to check in you will need to have your passport and the credit card you would like connected to your onboard account. You also need to be prepared to take a photo. When you have your documents and are ready to take your picture for your account, click the link to check in.

The first step in the process is to provide your passport information. You may have the option of using your phone’s camera function to obtain the required information from the passport, or you can manually type in the information.

In order for the app to access your camera functions you may need to give the app permission to do so. You can change the camera permissions in settings.

Second you will need to manually enter the information on your credit card, to connect it to your onboard account. The app did not offer an option for the camera to capture this information when we followed this process.

Third, you will be required to take a photo for your onboard account. This photo will be connected to the Sea Pass you receive when you board your cruise ship. The app will allow you to have someone else take a photo of you or take a selfie.

Make sure your photo is clear and follow the outline provided when you take the picture. We have heard of a few people completing this process and not receiving the Xpress pass due to issues with their photos, which requires them to take new ones at the port.

Once all three steps are complete you should receive a digital Xpress pass in the app. This is what will allow you to follow the Expedited Arrival for express boarding when you arrive at the cruise terminal.

This is the process when using an Android phone. The steps may differ for an Apple device.

What Do I Need for the Expedited Arrival Process at the Port

After dropping off your bags at the cruise terminal you will want to make sure you have the following items available prior to going through the Expedited Arrival process:

Passport and/or any identification that is required for your specific itinerary.
Cruise documents with your reservation information.
Xpress pass on your Celebrity Cruises app.

Prior to your embarkation day, we would recommend taking a screen shot of your Xpress pass so it can be accessed even if the app malfunctions.

Once you have these items ready, look for the Expedited Arrival sign and follow the process. Our experience at the San Juan port consisted of:

Showing staff our cruise documents and required identification.
Going through a security check point.
Showing staff our Xpress pass and ID.
That was it!

This process seriously took a few minutes and we were quickly on our way to the ship. Once on the ship, we were able to go to our stateroom where our Sea Passes were waiting for us on our door! After dropping our carry on luggage at our room, we were off to explore the ship.

We can not praise Celebrity enough for the incredible improvement to the embarkation process. If you are sailing on a ship that supports the Expedited Arrival process, we would highly recommend completing the check in process through the app.

How Do You Check In with this Celebrity App

How soon are you sailing?

What do you mean by "check in"... checking in for your cruise or just getting your cruise to show up on the app?

You can also check in for your cruise on the website, if that's what you need.

Have you signed into the app? Does your cruise come up? "Check in" is one of the buttons across the bottom. Note that you have to wait for check in to open up which is about 45 days before sail date.

You don’t have to use the app. You can do it online at celebritycruises.com. If that doesn’t work, you can check in the old fashioned way at the pier. There are lots of trained staff to help. Just don’t forget your passport, etc. Don’t stress. They won’t leave you behind. Have a great cruise!

On your Celebrity App - Click the icon of a Head (top right)

Select your sailing if not already selected (or if incorrect choose in TEAL Select a Different Cruise

In the Middle of the Screen you will see Check IN - If too early it will tell you the date when CheckIn Opens (45 days prior to Sailing)

If Open for CheckIn Click CheckIn and start by Scanning the bottom line of you passport. You can also immediately select boarding time and then come back later and complete.

Just a note about checking in with the app. The app doesn't ask for your contact phone number, however it does populate the phone number you enter for your emergency contact into your contact number on the reservation.

So after checking in with the app I login to the website and review the information there and I then correct my contact phone number and save. I also like to upload a stock photo of myself (vs take a new photo) which you can do on the website and not in the app.

I reported this bug to corporate in Nov 2021 when it caused me some problems onboard with B2B testing. Of course it's still there.

You can also update you information at any time.

Yes. I always do that. Easiest to do this using App. Just go direct to arrival time and make sure you select for each guest. I usually grab my arrival time and come back later to complete the other information.

You can also at anytime go back and re-enter or update you Passport

yes and yes.

Actually it's 12:01 in the timezone of the departure city.

I don't believe there is a way to upload an existing picture on the app but there is on the web site. I do the checkin on the app skipping the photo, then go to the website and do the picture. While on the website make sure to correct your contact phone number as there has been a bug for years that puts your emergency contacts number in your contact number. They refuse to fix the bug.

We booked our next cruise last September, but couldn't check in using the app until February 25 -- roughly one month before we sail. From experience, this period fluctuates -- sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. Not sure if I could check in at 12:01 a.m., however.

As for a profile pic, the app only allows me to take a "live" photo, i.e., in the moment. I cannot upload an existing image. Guessing, that's a security thing.

Finally, we check-in entirely via the app.

From personal experience, since I checked in last evening - Yes. I live in California and was able to be able to select my arrival chek-in time at 9:00:15 PM Pacific (Just after midnight Eastern).

I went back in today and completed the Check-In scanning Passports and entering Credit Card Details.

Thanks everyone. I stayed up until around 12:30AM and got an 11AM arrival time. My husband and I both waited to take our pictures until the next day. I wasn't able to use the good hair day selfie stored in my phone on the app, oh well:)

I will be sure to double check our phone number on the website.

That was my experience last time but, for whatever reason, I had to complete everything in that section yesterday because the app wouldn't save my progress... 🤔

Fortunately, my hair looked awesome 😆 but I wasn't planning to rescan my passport or enter a primary credit-card yet. Not a big deal, but I was curious why the app experience changed.

The APP. Checkin generally opens 45 days before your cruise. Have seen it a day earlier or later when a Sunday or holiday is involved.

Most important is you do NOT need to use the app. You do not need luggage tags.

You can bring your passport and cruise booking to the pier and check in there. Show your booking to the porter and they can tag your bags at the pier.

My app was about 3 minutes past midnight (port time, not my midnight) letting me check in last night.

Glad you were able to get at least the check-in slot.

I just checked in for a cruise on Wednesday with no problem. Since I'm on the West Coast I can usually checkin for a FLL departure at 9:01 PM Pacific. I usually just use the App and select a checkin time initially and then come back later to complete.

When I completed it I used the app to scan my passport and then entered my CC details. I usually then go to my laptop and upload a stock photo

We suggest downloading prior to your sail day, so you can save time at the terminal. Use the app to check in for your cruise, set up your arrival time, and upload your proof of vaccination. You can also download the app at no charge onboard.

How do I download the Celebrity Cruises® app and log in pre-cruise?

You can download the Celebrity Cruises app at no charge from the App Store or Google Play. Then launch it and sign in using your guest account credentials. If you don't have an account, you can create one right in the app.

Family cruising 'will never be the same' after surprise upgrade, writes Dilvin Yasa

Sometimes it's better not to know exactly what you're missing in travel. I learned this lesson the first time when I flew Business Class , bemoaning all those years I had spent folded up like origami in Economy.

And now it seems I'll be confronting that feeling all over again in cruising as I arrive at Piraeus Cruise Terminal in Athens for our family holiday with my husband and two daughters (15 and 10) in tow.

We've booked a seven-night Best of Greece cruise aboard Celebrity Infinity , a 2170-guest beauty set to take us around Santorini, the Turkish beach resort town of Kuşadası, Rhodes, Mykonos and Hydra. My paperwork tells me we're in the stateroom we've booked and paid for: a Verandah Stateroom to sleep a family of four, which is how we usually sail.

"Good morning, Ms Yasa," a Celebrity Cruises Guest Relations representative says as she greets us the moment I set foot out of the taxi and gently leads me by the arm - confused children and husband trailing behind me - towards a VIP refreshments section of the Terminal. "We have some good news for you today - we have upgraded you to a suite in The Retreat."

And with that she leaves me to scoff my arrival Champagne and fruit platter in shock as I take in the long lines of "regular" passengers trying to board. I won't be joining them, I am told; The Retreat guests are fast-tracked onto the ship via a separate line, every last step into the onboard private lounge.

The Retreat

For those unfamiliar with The Retreat , it's essentially an exclusive resort for VIP members aboard Celebrity Cruises. A quick look at my app tells me that the suites come with a dedicated butler who is always on hand to help me with anything I may require, from unpacking my bags and ironing my clothes or organising any special events or arrangements.

I, like all guests of The Retreat, have access to my own Concierge service, a table at suites-only restaurant Luminae, the option to dine at Blu (usually reserved for Aquaclass guests) as well as Michael's Lounge where we can enjoy complimentary beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), snacks and fun traditions such as an afternoon tea loaded with scones and pretty cakes.

On newer ships such as Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent, for example, there's also access to an exclusive sundeck but this isn't the case with Celebrity Infinity a recently refurbished vessel, which at 24 years of age, is one of the senior beauties of the cruise line. What else does The Retreat offer? We're about to find out.

More than a stateroom

My 'room', I quickly discover, isn't just any stateroom, but the ridiculously spacious Sunset Suite, located in the aft of the ship and offering expansive views with its sensationally large private veranda to take advantage of those Greek Island sunsets.

The space - I'm happy to report - is considerably larger than most inner city apartments, offering a separate living space which converts into a double bed for the girls, plentiful storage, a fully stocked minibar, a sumptuous king-sized bed, that magnificent verandah which is almost has large as the suite itself and Al, a cheerful gentleman who introduces himself as our butler.

He has already placed the Champagne on ice, laid out the chocolate-covered strawberries but would we like him to unpack our suitcases? Nope, Al can rest easy.

It's no accident that I've chosen Celebrity Cruise Lines for this, the holiday we've all been dreaming about; I've cruised solo with them a couple of times and knew that when it came to spending my own money for a personal holiday, there was no better cruise line for the job.

I appreciate its slick aesthetic, focus on quality food, and the entertainment options available for kids of all ages without marketing itself as a family cruise (you won't find any kids' water play areas or bumper cars, for example, but they have age-appropriate clubs for everyone, including teens).

The Retreat, as it turns out, displays its worth the first night before we pull into Santorini. Not only do we discover we get priority departure and embarkation at each destination, but our concierge has already secured our cable car passes so we don't have to worry about a thing Unbelievably - for July in Santorini - this means we're able to have the Oia to ourselves for 20 whole minutes before everyone else catches up.

In Hydra, a picturesque island largely off the mega-cruise circuit, early bird access means we're some of the only guests who are able to tender off the ship and visit, departing just before the captain makes the call that waters are too choppy to continue to do so.

Cruising 'ruined'

We make the most of The Retreat services while we're on board: reserved theatre seating, a daily delivery of in-room treats and when our daughter turns 11 halfway through the cruise, we enlist Al's assistance to decorate the suite and deliver a birthday cake. He goes above and beyond, also stocking up an ice bucket with the drinks he's noticed our younger daughter enjoys most. Luminae is great, but to be fair, the food is consistently good throughout each space (yes, even the buffet) that we only visit it twice during our voyage. Michael's Lounge? We're there CONSTANTLY.

Now that we're off the ship and delivered back to a life sans butler, we're faced with a problem. We would like to book another cruise for 2025, and while we all agree it will be another Celebrity Cruise (my girls love the friends they made in their kids' clubs, but give high praise for the food as well), we now know The Retreat exists.

"Maybe I could take on extra shifts?" ponders my eldest. "I could put my Christmas money towards it?" adds my youngest.

You see, now we know The Retreat exists, cruising for our family will never be the same again.
