Formed in the subway systems of Oakland, retro-soul outfit The California Honeydrops are an electrifying group that defy convention at every turn. They’ve become a mainstay at festivals including Byron Bay Bluesfest (Australia), Outside Lands, Monterey Jazz, Lightning In A Bottle, and touring with B.B. King, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint. Led by the enigmatic and energetic frontman, Lech Wierzynski, and drummer Benjamin Malament, each member of the band is a virtuoso in their own rite — Yanos “Johnny Bones” Lustig on saxophone, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards/guitar, Beaumont Beaullieu on bass, and regularly accompanied by Scott Messersmith on percussion, Oliver Tuttle on trombone, Leon Cotter on saxophone/clarinet, and Miles Lyons on trombone/sousaphone — navigating through a vast repertoire of original songs and timeless classics every night. But what truly sets them apart is their unwavering commitment to the art of improvisation - a skill so finely honed that they have completely abandoned the use of set lists and no two shows are ever the same. Off stage, their music has been streamed more than 200 million times, and placed in a variety of TV and films, including “Dead To Me,” “Alaska Daily,” “Black-ish” and more. Sound Summit Announces Full Artist Lineup for 2024 Festival: Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, The California Honeydrops, Grace Bowers and More

This September, artists and fans will flock to the hotly-anticipated return of Sound Summit, a music festival and fundraiser slated to take place on September 7 in Mill Valley, Calif. Produced since 2015 by Roots & Branches Conservancy–a San Francisco Bay Area-based nonprofit organization committed to preserving the incredible natural landscapes and cultural heritage of the region–Sound Summit has become a beloved institution in Mill Valley for its commitment to honoring the environment with a world-class roster of musical guests. This year’s celebration will be led by co-headliners Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, who join a long list of iconic artists to show their support for the event.

Set in the incomparable majesty of the Mountain Theater on the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, Sound Summit uplifts its surroundings by donating all proceeds to Mount Tamalpais State Park. Against breathtaking views of the mountain and the bay below, attendees can soak up the neo-psychedelia and masterful indie-rock of the legendary Barnett and Vile, who memorably collaborated on 2017’s Lotta Sea Lice , as well as the acclaimed R&B revivalism of The California Honeydrops and lightning-quick axe work of Nashville, Tenn. guitar prodigy Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge. Genre-bending local sensation Skyway Man will round out the bill, with emcee duties falling to the capable team of KNRB cohosts Murph & Mac and KPFA’s “Dead to the World” radio host Tim Lynch.

With the help of legends like Wilco, Dr. John & The Night Trippers, The War On Drugs, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Herbie Hancock and more, Roots & Branches Conservancy has raised over $250,000 for Mount Tam to date, leading the charge for trail restoration, water conservation and more special projects. “The piece that we love about Sound Summit,” offers Roots & Branches Conservancy board president Michael Nash, “is not only staging a resonant musical gathering in this stellar spot high above the Bay, but that we’ve been able to in turn fund truly meaningful projects on the mountain that enhance public access and experience, let alone others around fire prevention, water conservation, emergency equipment and services, and more. It’s a full circle, the proverbial gift that keeps on giving.”

Sound Summit Announces 2024 Festival Lineup Headlined by Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile

The daylong music festival and fundraiser, Sound Summit , returns to the historic Mountain Theatre in the Mount Tamalpais State Park on September 7th. This year’s festival will be headlined by Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett and multi-instrumentalist Kurt Vile and The Violators .

Additional music performers include Oakland-based retro-soul band The California Honeydrops , 17-year-old guitar phenom Grace Bowers and her band The Hodge Podge , as well as Bay Area-based psychedelic folk-rock act Skyway Man .

Returning as charismatic emcees for the event are the dynamic duo of Murph & Mac (aka Brian Murphy and Paul McCaffrey, who are former partners on KNBR radio from 2006-2023), along with KPFA’s “Dead to the World” radio host, Tim Lynch . Andy Cabic from the group Vetiver will be spinning records between sets.

Tickets go on sale Friday, June 7th, at 10am and are $120 for adults and $60 for youth 12 and under; children 2 and under are free. Reserved Mountain Parking is $65, and the Bus Shuttle Round Trip from Mill Valley is $30. Music plays from 11am-7pm. SoundSummit.net.

Sound Summit is produced by Roots & Branches Conservancy and takes place at a 4,000-seat natural stone amphitheater with breathtaking views of San Francisco, the Bay, and the Pacific Ocean beyond. More than live music, Sound Summit is about giving back. Event proceeds ($250,000+) have been allocated to upgrade the historic Steep Ravine Environmental Cabins and the restoration of the Pantoll and Bootjack trails and campsites, among other projects.

So mark your calendars, grab your shades, and get ready to experience the most majestic music festival in the Bay Area.

The California Honeydrops celebrate their 12th year together with the ongoing release of cover singles from their forthcoming series collection, “Covers from the Cave” and return to live music with a national tour across the United States post the COVID-19 pandemic. This series follows the release of their live albums “Remember When: Vol 3” and “Honeydrops Live 2019,” and their first-ever double-album, “Call It Home: Vol 1 & 2” in 2018. Led by dynamic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski, and drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their shows. They’ve taken the party all over the world, playing festivals of all kinds and touring widely across North America, Europe, and Australia. In 2016 & 2017 the Honeydrops were honored to support Bonnie Raitt on her North America release tour—and in the past have been privileged to support the likes of B.B. King, Allen Toussaint, Buddy Guy, and Dr. John. Whether in those high-profile performances or in more intimate venues where the band itself can leave the stage and get down on the dance floor, the California Honeydrops’ shared vision and purpose remain: to make the audience dance and sing.

The Honeydrops have come a long way since guitarist and trumpeter Lech Wierzynkski and drummer Ben Malament started busking in an Oakland subway station, but the band has stayed true to that organic, street-level feel. Listening to Lech sing, it can be a surprise that he was born in Warsaw, Poland, and raised by Polish political refugees. He learned his vocal stylings from contraband American recordings of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Louis Armstrong, and later at Oberlin College and on the club circuit in Oakland, California. With the additions of Johnny Bones on tenor sax and clarinet, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards, and Beau Bradbury on bass, they’ve built a powerful full-band sound to support Wierzynski’s vocals. More like parties than traditional concerts, their shows feature extensive off-stage jamming and crowd interaction. “The whole point is to erase the boundaries between the crowd and us,” Wierzynski says. “We don’t make setlists. We want requests. We want crowd involvement, to make people become a part of the whole thing by dancing along, singing, picking the songs and generally coming out of their shells.”
