CLS Program

Program overview.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program partners with universities and nonprofits around the globe to provide cohorts of U.S. students an opportunity to study the language and culture in a country/location where the target language is commonly spoken. The CLS Program, through its CLS Spark initiative, provides beginner-level virtual instruction for Arabic, Chinese, and Russian for competitively selected U.S. undergraduate students whose home campuses do not offer these languages. CLS scholars are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship and apply their critical language skills in their future careers.

The U.S. Department of State sponsors and oversees the CLS Program, including CLS Spark, as part of a larger U.S. government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to our national security, economic prosperity, and engagement with the world. CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the entire United States at every level of language learning. American Councils for International Education  administers the CLS Program. Most languages offered by the CLS Program do not require applicants to have any experience studying critical languages. The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths, with the purpose of representing the full diversity of the United States. Participants are selected based on their commitment to language learning and plans to apply their language skills to their future academic or professional pursuits.

Languages and Levels

The CLS Program offers instruction in thirteen critical languages:

Program Structure

CLS Program institutes cover approximately one academic year of university-level language coursework during an eight- to ten-week program and are designed to meet the needs of students from a variety of language levels and backgrounds. Some CLS institutes require one to two years of prior language study (or the equivalent), while others accept students with no prior background in the language.

Formal classroom language instruction is provided for a minimum of 15 hours per week. Extracurricular activities are designed to supplement the formal curriculum, including regular one-on-one meetings with native speaker language partners for conversational practice, as well as cultural activities and excursions designed to expand students’ understanding of the history, politics, culture and daily life of their host country.

Applicants may only apply once per application cycle for a single language. Applicants who submit multiple applications will be considered ineligible.

Program Benefits

Participants in the CLS Program will receive:

  • Language instruction and cultural programming;
  • Textbooks and language learning materials;
  • Language gains certified using the widely recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment;
  • Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three years after program completion;
  • Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College
  • International and domestic travel between the student's home city in the U.S. and the CLS Program site abroad;
  • Visa application fees, where applicable; and
  • Room, board, and program-sponsored travel within the host country or location.

Other expenses, such as, but not limited to, will not be covered:

  • U.S. passport fees (except for students who are eligible and apply for CLS Passport Assistance);
  • Cost of medical exams and any follow-up visits necessary to pass the medical review process, as determined by the CLS Program; and
  • Cost of immunizations required for entry, as well as costs for travel health clinical appointments.

U.S. Department of State

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) works to build friendly, peaceful relations between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through academic, cultural, sports, and professional exchanges, as well as public -private partnerships. Critical Language Scholarship recipients are among the more than 30,000 exchange program participants that are overseen annually by ECA. Other programs the Bureau manages include the Fulbright Program and the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

Tracy Weber

Director of Global Education Email:  [email protected] Phone: 610-526-7352

My name is Tracy Weber, and I look forward to working with you as you embark on your study abroad journey! As the College’s Director of Global Education, I am responsible for undergraduate study abroad, international exchange agreements, and thinking strategically about global education at the College. Previously I developed and managed study abroad and global internship programs at University of California Berkeley and the George Washington University, where I launched their London Study Center. I have worked with incoming international scholars through the Fulbright and Sister City programs, and studied abroad in Switzerland and Russia. I also spent three years in Japan through the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET) and upon my return to the U.S. served in the political section of the Japanese Embassy in Washington D.C. I hold a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Virginia and an M.A. in International Communication from American University’s School of International Service. In addition to my professional interests in intercultural communication, peace and conflict resolution, and international education, I love modern art, being out in nature – hiking, kayaking, swimming – and cooking, in particular exploring recipes from my grandmother’s native Finland.

Study Abroad Student Coordinators

Nisha Marino - Study Abroad Coordinator

Nisha Marino

Hello! My name is Nisha Marino, and I'm a senior at Bryn Mawr. I'm majoring in Political Science and minoring in Latin American/Iberian/Latino/a Studies. I spent my Fall 2022 semester with IFSA-Cuba, living with a wonderful host family and studying at the University of Havana. I spent three and a half months in Cuba, where all my classes were in Spanish, and I got multiple opportunities to travel around Cuba outside of Havana. I'm very excited to be here this semester, so please don't hesitate to come by the SASC desk to chat!

Holly Evans - Study Abroad Coordinator

Holly Evans

My name is Holly Evans and I am one of the study abroad student coordinators here at Bryn Mawr. I am a senior sociology major and a political science and philosophy double minor. I studied abroad at the University of Bristol in England through their general pathway program. Despite this, I only took philosophy courses in order to finish my philosophy minor while abroad. I adored my time in England and made lifelong friends with both fellow study abroad students and full-time students at Bristol. As an athlete at Bryn Mawr, I found ways to balance studying active, my studies, traveling, and making the most of my experience!

Resources for

Bryn mawr students selected as boren scholars.

Four Bryn Mawr students will be participating in the Boren Scholarship Program and attending the flagship program in Kazakhstan.

Class of 2024 members Jac McCarty, Ashlyn Darling, Julia Mohr, and Lila Ackley will all be participating in the program. Anjali Bose '24 was also selected for a Boren Scholarship to study in India but will be participating in the Research Scholars Program at Boston Children's Hospital instead.

The Boren Scholarship Program  is designed to increase U.S. knowledge of languages and countries deemed to have security interest for the U.S. Recipients must agree to a “service requirement” to work either in a federal agency with national security responsibilities or in an academic field related to the area of study for which the scholarship was given.

About this year's Boren Scholars

""

Lila Ackley

Ackley is double majoring in biology and Russian.

Hometown: Yarmouth, Maine

"I hope to use this scholarship to find intersections between my two fields of study, Russian and Biology. I'm particularly interested in investigating ecological problems in Kazakhstan, as the past century has seen the dramatic transformation of the country's landscape. Building competence in Russian will enable me to pursue research in Central Asia, working towards solving the global problems which necessitate global cooperation."

""

Ashlyn Darling

Darling is majoring in Russian and minoring in psychology.

Hometown: Dover, Del.

“I’m excited to use this scholarship to return to Kazakhstan and become more immersed in the culture and language. I plan to continue my studies in both Psychology and Russian following the program, so I hope to gain more real-world experience in interacting with different communities, learn from those communities, and learn how I can better contribute on a larger scale — in Kazakhstan, in the U.S., and elsewhere. Language learning has been a wonderful tool in helping me accomplish this, and I can’t wait to continue improving!”

""

Mohr is double majoring in Russian and international studies, with a minor in philosophy minor.

Hometown: Maywood, New Jersey.

"My decision to study abroad is a product of the fusion of two of my main interests—Russian and International Studies—and I believe the experience will prepare me well for a career which seeks to understand and contextualize U.S.-Russia relations."

""

Jac McCarty

McCarty is double majoring in Russian and computer science.

Hometown: Boulder, Colo.

"Although after three and a half years of Russian study, I am certainly a capable Russian speaker under everyday circumstances, my current undergraduate research into natural language models in Russian has revealed a gap in my fluency, particularly when it comes to translation. For this reason, I believe studying in Kazakhstan for a year is crucial for my career progression, as it will facilitate learning in an immersive Russian-speaking environment without the political complexities associated with studying in Russia."

Each year, Bryn Mawr students apply for a number of prestigious national scholarships, grants, and fellowships, often with great success. These fellowships may provide funding for the last years of undergraduate education, for graduate education both in the United States and abroad, or even for travel and independent research not tied to an academic institution. Learn more about the many fellowships and advising available to Bryn Mawr students in the  Fellowships  section of the website.

DISCOVERING DIONYSOS IN THE SINAI PALIMPSEST: New Mysteries of the Ancient Orphica?

The recent discovery of Greek hexameters in a palimpsest from the Monastery of St. Catharine in Sinai (Sin. ar. NF 66) has introduced a fascinating new piece of the puzzle for scholars of ancient Greek mythology studying the tales of the god Dionysos. Questions abound regarding this mysterious and fragmentary text, which includes new twists on the less frequently attested stories of the childhood of Dionysos, including his relations with Aphrodite and his divine mother, Persephone, as well as his grisly dismemberment at the hands of the minions of his step-mother, Hera. While these hexameter verses on Dionysos bear some resemblance to the late antique epic of Nonnos, the Dionysiaka, some scholars have speculated that this palimpsest text comes from the lost collection of Orphic Rhapsodies, which would make it the first direct witness to the poetry attributed to the mythical poetry Orpheus, known currently only from quotations preserved in other ancient authors. The palimpsest text does show some similarities with features of the Orphic Hymns, an extant collection of poetry likewise attributed to Orpheus, and the palimpsest may help illuminate these notoriously obscure and difficult hymns, while the Hymns may help to fill in the gaps in the fragmentary palimpsest text.

This conference at Bryn Mawr College provides an opportunity to bring together scholars from across the globe to explore this new and exciting text. Radcliffe Edmonds (Bryn Mawr College), in conjunction with Luisina Abrach (Universidad de Buenos Aires) and Anne-France Morand (Université Laval, Québec) are convening a group of scholars to discuss the interpretation of a variety of aspects of the scenes in this text. The conference is taking place at Bryn Mawr College over two days, March 1 and 2, 2024, but the paper sessions will be open to remote audiences via Zoom.

Digital Connections Across Campuses: HASTAC Scholars

  • Post author By Stella Fritzell
  • Post date February 2, 2024

HASTAC Scholars is a student-driven community of graduate and undergraduate students that represents dozens of academic disciplines and over 200 institutions, including both liberal arts colleges and R1 universities. The community generally works at the intersections of technology, the arts, humanities, and sciences, and rethinks academic research, learning, and pedagogy as it occurs in the digital age. Over the course of the academic year, HASTAC Scholars undertake a number of small projects and activities, some of which are described below.

Collaborative Book Reviews : Each year HASTAC Scholars undertake a collaborative book review. In 2023 HASTAC Scholars reviewed The New College Classroom by Cathy N. Davidson and Christina Katopodis. In 2024 HASTAC Scholars reviewed both  Atlas of AI by Kate Crawford and  Data Feminism by Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren Klein. You can find collaborative book reviews from previous years on the HASTAC Scholars website , beginning with the reviews from 2021.

Individual scholars review anywhere from one chapter to the entire contents of the selected book and workshop their writing with other scholars in an open, peer-review process. The reviews are ultimately published on the HASTAC Scholars website as blog posts and archived in the Humanities Commons open-access repository , where they can be downloaded or viewed in a web browser. Scholars also have the opportunity to interview the author(s) of the selected book and to publish their discussion online.

Digital Forums : From its inception, digital forums and research presentations have been a longstanding part of HASTAC Scholars programming. Topics have ranged from academic research, to pedagogical theory, to professional guidance. Scholars have shared their work in the form of webinars, round-table discussions, and as conference-style research presentations. Past recordings are available on a YouTube playlist compiled by the Futures Initiative at CUNY (The City University of New York) and posted on the HASTAC Scholars website .

Dialogues : In keeping with its goal of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, in 2024 HASTAC Scholars have launched a new initiative intended to further foster meaningful interactions and the cross fertilization of ideas among students. Freeform in style, Dialogues brings together two or three scholars in different but interrelated fields to discuss the intersections of their work. Scholars may choose to share the content of their conversations as a blog post published to the HASTAC Scholars website .

Interested in learning more or curious about how to get involved? Stella Fritzell is a member of the 2022-2024 HASTAC Scholars Cohort, as well as a Digital Scholarship Graduate Assistant and a current PhD Candidate in Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies at Bryn Mawr.
