Dodge Journey Radio Stopped Working: Causes + How to Fix

Dodge Journey Stereo Not Working

Has the radio in your Dodge Journey stopped working?  If so, there are three common causes for this issue .  They are a blown fuse, loose or corroded wiring, and a problem with the radio itself.

If your radio comes on but isn’t working, this article will cover that too: Please jump to the section that’s applicable to your vehicle.

Dodge Journey Radio Not Working

Table of Contents:

Radio Won’t Work At All Causes

The radio is on but no sound, common questions.

The most common reason for a radio to stop working in a car is a blown fuse.

This section covers a Dodge Journey’s radio would show no signs of life. If your radio is lighting up, but no sound is coming from the speakers, head down to the next section.

Cause 1: Blown Fuse

Dodge Journey Radio Won't Work at All

Always start with the simplest and easiest potential cause first, which is the radio fuse. You’ll need to check the fuse box to see if the radio fuse is blown.

How to Test a Fuse

Step 1 : You’ll need to your Dodge Journey’s fuse box location .  On most makes and models, it’s to the left of the driver’s seat (when you are behind the steering wheel).

Step 2 : Once you access your vehicle’s fuse box, you’ll need to locate the radio fuse . You should see a schematic printed on the door.

Step 3 : Test the fuse .  There are two ways to do this. First, you can visually inspect your Journey’s radio fuse.  There’s a wire between the two prongs.  If the connecting filament is damaged, power can’t reach the head unit, and the fuse needs to be replaced.

A better way to verify a fuse is functioning is to use a test light . This can be accomplished without even pulling a fuse.  Here’s how:

2011 dodge journey radio no sound

Start by finding a good ground source on your Journey to ground the test light to. You can usually find one inside the door jam that will reach the fuse box.

Next, turn the key to the accessory position, and touch the test light tip to both prongs.

If it only lights up for one prong, the fuse has failed, and you’ll need to replace it. If both sides light up, the fuse is fine.

Cause 2: Wiring Issue

2011 dodge journey radio no sound

If your Journey’s radio fuse checks out, it’s time to determine if there’s a problem with the wiring harness going to the radio system.

Verify that your vehicle’s radio has a solid ground connection.  Use a multimeter to verify the voltage level is accurate.  Any issue with the wiring harness will prevent power from getting to the radio system and cause the fuse to blow again.

Cause 3: The Radio Itself

If there’s power going to your Journey’s radio, and you’ve verified that the ground connection is good and it has power, the only way to get your car working is to repair or replace it.

Cause 1: Broken Antenna

When the tuner is on, there will be static. The CD player or Aux input should still work fine .

A broken antenna is one of the most common issues that cause your Journey’s radio to stop working.  Antennas are reliable,  but they can weaken and eventually break entirely over time, mainly if you frequently utilize drive-through car washes.

If you suspect this might be the problem, check to see if your vehicle’s antenna is in good working condition (is it bolted on?). If it isn’t, then you should replace it.

Cause 2: Anti-Theft Mode

If your vehicle’s stereo is coming on and says to “input radio code, ” you’ll need to find.  Most vehicles come with a card where the number is recorded or written inside the glove box on a sticker. Sometimes it’s printed on the back of the owner’s manual.

Some manufacturers will let you look it up online if you need the code.  If that doesn’t work, you can take it to the dealer and have them pull it. Here are all the ways you can look up your Journey’s radio code.

Cause 3: CD Player or Aux Button Has Been Touched

If your Journey has a CD player or aux button and it was recently touched, then your radio may be stuck in that mode.

You can test this by attempting to connect another device, such as an iPod, to the car’s audio system. If it works, then there is likely an issue with the radio itself.

In this case, you should take your Journey to a professional for repair or replacement.

Does the radio stop working when you crash?

No, your Dodge Journey’s radio should not stop working when you are in a car accident. If it does, then there may be an issue with the wiring or the radio itself (wiring short, blown fuse, no power, and ground connection).

You can check to see if any of the fuses in your vehicle have blown, and if they haven’t, then you should look for loose or corroded wiring in your electrical system.

One of my Dodge Journey’s speakers isn’t working.

The speaker could be blown.  But, you’d likely hear a static sound from the speaker.  It’s more likely to be caused by a damaged speaker wire.

If one of your Journey’s door speakers isn’t working, the most common location of the short will be where the harness enters the door (since it moves).

Dodge Journey: How to Reset Stereo System

Many car owners/drivers use the radio or stereo system while they drive. Sometimes the stereo system has problems and needs to be reset. Below are directions for resetting the stereo system on a Dodge Journey.

Note:  Doing this will erase any saved radio stations or paired phones. You will need to reset the stations and pair phones again when starting the car.

If neither of these options fixes the issue, please take your car to a certified mechanic or dealership.

2011 – 2020 Models

  • Open the passenger side door. The fuse box is under the dash near the door.
  • Press the  tab  and pull down.
  • Check fuse F128.
  • If the fuses are burnt,  replace  them with new ones.
  • Open the  hood  of the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the  negative battery cable  from the terminal with a socket wrench. Make sure the cable is not touching the battery or terminal.
  • Disconnect the  positive terminal . Do not let it touch the terminal.
  • Let the car sit for 3-5 minutes .
  • Reconnect the cables  to the battery again.

2009 – 2010 Models

  • Open the hood. The fuse box is on the left side of the engine compartment.
  • Press the  clips  on either side of the lid and lift up.
  • Check fuse M12.

Radio's On But No Audio

  • Add to quote

Hey team, We have a 2012 Charger SE with the 4.3 touch screen radio. We love the car and the potential it has but there's one thing that annoys the heck out of us and the dealer is stalling. The issue is the radio. Sometimes (once every 4-5 weeks since we got it, although it's been 2-3 time a week lately) the radio will turn on but there's no audio. If you adjust the volume the bars go up and down but still no audio. It doesn't matter if its the radio, CD or Satellite Radio that it's tuned to, the result is the same. Turning the car off and restarting fixes it. I've even seen the same issue with a rental I had late last year. We've had the car in twice to be looked at but they basically say "can't fault it, can't fix it". Has anyone else had, or heard of, the problem? It's ruining what, otherwise, is a good experience wit the car. Cheers Paul

Thanks Wyoo..@op: let us know how it goes..

A quick update, the radio did it again today so we drove straight to the dealership so they could look at it when it was playing up (again). They looked at it for about 30 minutes and then we were told that they would be replacing the radio but need to order one in first. So hopefully the new radio will fix the issue. I'm also hoping it's not a software issue but a hardware/component batch issue otherwise the problem may come back.

The replacement radio was put in on Monday, no problems so far...

2011 dodge journey radio no sound

I had the same problem in my '07. Replacement radio didn't work. I've just learned to deal with it since it's so infrequent.

A quick update if anyone's interested. It's been two months since the radio was replaced and it's still going strong so fingers crossed the issue has been resolved.

Good to hear you got the issue fixed. I'm sure that was annoying as hell.

Suddenly no sound from speakers?

  • Add to quote

So today the sound cut out from all my speakers. The head unit (8.4an) works perfectly fine except there's zero audio output regardless of how much I dick around with it. Any tips on how to fix it? I should note I have the upgraded alpine system. Thanks!

2011 dodge journey radio no sound

Dumb question but does all the functions work other than no sound or is it completely frozen? You could try holding both buttons in and it should reset, if not then there may possibly be a fuse for the factory amp.

Ya everything functions fine, i can navigate all the menus, adjust the volume, you name it... Just no sound lol. Which two buttons should I hold in together?

The mute button and the browse/enter button, push them both in and hold them and it will reset, may not do anything since you are able to use all the functions but worth a try

Do you get any sound from the navigation system? You can adjust the navigation sound when you are getting instructions by using the steering wheel volume up control. The sound comes only through the left front speaker. I am sure you have the mute off and a radio input selected. Greg

Hi there. Did your radio volume get resolved? If so, how? I just bought a brand new 2013 Lamarie and when I picked up the truck the volume does not work? The dealer is not sure what it could be at this point. I am very disappointed with the truck being brand new off the lot. Any suggestions?

did you look around for a fuse? sounds like a fuse issue.

I have a 12 so i know the radio is diferent but this just happened to me too. I disconnected the- on the battery for a minute the hooked it back up and it worked fine

I just had this problem with 2011 Laramie... lift the backseat to the AMP...do not lift the amp cover. Find the amp power line to the grey fuse box thingy on the side of the wall under the seat. Unplug, wait 2 seconds and plug back together. You can opt to disconnect the truck battery first (im lazy and did not). Start the truck back up and you should have volume again from the radio, Bluetooth and backup sensor. QUOTE="BadRamrod, post: 2225231, member: 179759"] Having the same problem in a 2011. The Uconnect on my Ram 1500 Laramie Hemi has no sound coming out from the speakers.. Everything seems to be working except there's no sound coming out.. The problem actually started when the Bluetooth on my Uconnect wouldn't connect to my phone, so when this happened I just started using the USB source and then the USB wouldn't work so finally just used the radio and now none of them works. Even the warning sound on the backup sensor doesn't work.. All the other features on the Uconnect is work except there's no sound. I've tried disconnecting the Battery and also did a factory reset and none of them worked. Any other helpful advice please.. thank you

Unplug the fuse...it will be under the backseat on the passenger side. Wait 2 seconds and plug back together. Its one of those larger box bricks. The fuse will be against the outer panel, you do not need to lift the amp cover to access.

Hears a reset that one of the Ram Specialist on the site posted not sure if this helps but it’s worth a try. Good luck ramcares said: Hi Rammin88, Sorry to hear about this! You can try performing a soft reset your Uconnect system: "Step 1) Put your vehicle into the accessories mode (ACC or RUN) For keyless start (push-button) vehicles: push the start button twice without having your foot on the gas or brake pedal Step 2) Hold down the volume and tuner knob buttons, at the same time, for thirty seconds. Step 3) Let go of the buttons Step 4) Turn vehicle off Step 5) Open driver’s side door for thirty seconds Step 6) Close door Step 7) Restart vehicle Step 8) Let the media centre load up and see if concern is still present" If this doesn't help I would recommend visiting your local dealership for further diagnosis. Sounds like a common issue that has been happening on the2011 Dodge Journey's. It is covered under warranty and is advised you do not try to fic it yourself. You may void the warranty trying to fix it yourself.

Have my 2011 R/T and recently the navigation voice stopped working. I didn't think anything of it as I don't use it often. However, today my radio sound stopped working. All other things work functioning, just no sound. Any ideas or suggestions? The map, other buttons, menus work....simply no sound at all. Anyone have a fix? Oh, this is in addition to my non-functioning door handles, haha. Thanks.

If it was just the nav audio, I know you can turn it up by pressing the volume when she speaks. As for the rest.. you'll probably have to go to the dealership.

That happened to me once, and I just had to pull out the fuse for the audio and put it back in, and it worked right away. I cant remember offhand, but theres a fuse just for the amplifiers, pull that one.

Had the exact same problem. Pulled the fuse for the amp and it worked fine.

Nice one DruBoogie. + Rep for you!

Took out the Amp and Radio fuse, then simply put them right back in. So far after startign it once, it seemed to fix the problem. Let's see if this holds up....keeping fingers crossed.

My dealer told me this is a known issue, but there's no fix from Chrysler...yet. So, I guess whenever I lose sound, I'll be pulling fuses.

Took my car to the dealer for this problem today. They determined I have a bad amp and there is -21 in stock (NEGATIVE 21) and have no clue as to how long it will be before Dodge has them in stock. Not sure as to what to do but wait...

I can hear again! I have had my 2012 Charger for about a month now, (4,500 miles) Started it up yesterday an no sound! Radio looks like it is working fine. Called the dealer and they said bring it in next week, they were to busy. I found this great site where you guys told me what to do. I had to go to another site to find out the fuse is in the trunk and is # 27. I pulled it and replaced it and all is good in the world again! The amp must be like a computer or cell phone that needs to be powered off to reset. Thank you for your great advice on this problem, I once again love my Charger!

Link is here: https://qna.extra.chrysler.com/rhb/rhbRadioSoftwareUpdateRequest.do You have to have the last 8 digits of your VIN to fill out the form. Jeff

this problem happened to me just now. Everything works except the volume doesn't produce sound. I'm kind of aggravated with the entire Uconnect system considering. 1 out of the 4 times i wanted to use my seat warmers, it didn't turn on (greyed out). I had a iPhone 3Gs and the bluetooth worked perfectly fine. I got a 4G and it won't stay synced to my car after turning it off. Not to mention the door handles won't open 80% of the time (I think there's a recall for that). I guess I'll take it to the dealer. I went to the dealer I bought it from for my free oil change and it ended up costing me $74. I know once they take apart the dashboard it will squeak and rattle forever. Ugh.

Anyone know of an update for the 4.3? Mine is doing the same thing as well. Pulled both radio fuses (no amp), pulled battery, and disconnected all plugs from back of radio and let it sit for an hour and nothing. I'm hesitant to take it to the dealer as I have aftermarket amps, speakers, and subs so I'm worried dealer may say it's my fault (bs).

moparmaniac43 said: Was this for totally muted audio or audio skipping?? I have the 4.3S radio and it will start skipping/audio blipping. I never lose audio it just quickly cuts out and then back in. It can be fine for a few weeks and then will act up...might do that for days or weeks and then clear up again. Strange thing is I can't recall it doing it while listening to a CD or the FM radio. It seems to only happening when listening to Satellite radio or music off my thumb drive. It was doing it bad on a 4 hour round trip last week. I have an appt Saturday with the dealer but yesterday and today..no skips! Figures!!!! Click to expand...

Where are the amplifiers located on these. I didnt think the se 6 speaker system had one but the dealer was asking me if I disconnected the stock one???? Where is the fuse for it as well? They said they got a code, and replaced the stereo bit its still doing it. They said it has to be my wiring. But I can plug my phone into the amp and all speakers and amps work as intended.

2011 dodge journey radio no sound

I posted on here awhile back, the dealer had me remove my VIPER REMOTE Starter car alarm, and my two 12's and Amp they claimed that these two aftermarket things were causing my RADIO to shut off, and the dash to be in GERMAN instead of english. I'm pissed, for the Alarm was about 350.00 + Install, and the Amp was 200.00 and the subs were 200.00 and the box was 110.00 so 510.00 = install so about 800.00+ inparts and over 500+ in install fee's has gone down the drain for what the dealers who (2) seperate ones have had my car for over 2months combined... I'm so done with DODGE right now, I don't think I'm getting another one ever after this, you would think I owned a damn MAYBACH the way they attempted to discredit all of my aftermarket upgrades, as if it was done on the side of the road.

I just bought a 2011 Journey SXT. When I start the car the radio volume (sound) comes on extremely high. This happens once in a while. Has any one had this happen to them before? Thanks

Thanks to DodgeCares assistance the other day, I called my dealer back and spoke to someone different. And they now have the upgrade on order and should be here in 4 -5 days, but because of the holida

Thanks to Dodgecares for contacting Canada customer assistance and helping me out. Yesterday dealership applied the 08-048-11 fix, the same fix the dealership told me last week wasn't the right one.

Check to see if the sound variance is set to high. It may be compensating from the start up of the engine. Ever turn it off before shutting the car down and turning the radio on after you start the engine?
We have the same problem. Dodge cannot replicate the problem. The radio does not always turn itself up. Sometimes it waits until the car is put into drive. We bought the Journey and it has been in to the shop twice for issues with the touch screen going out and the heat coming on full blast. Wouldn't be a problem during the winter but when it is 96 degrees outside it is not a good thing. They had the Journey for 15 days before saying that it is fixed. We will see.
Did they fix the radio problem and if so, what did they do. Thanks

Radio problem has not been fixed. Went back today and the ticket has been reopened with Technical support. Dodge is now looking into the problem.........

It did it again. I push in the black radio knob and the radio volume comes on extremely loud. This only occurs about once a week. The rest of the time the volume is fine. HELP

How do I change the sound variance or do you mean the "speed adjust volume" which I did set at different level and still encounter the problem. Thanks

You are not the only one with this issue.

I got my Journey less than a month ago and I too have this issue with the volume coming up very loud at start up.

I think I have established a pattern. The problem seems to occur mainly when the source is the USB stick or the Satellite Radio. I have not experienced it when the source was regular FM/AM radio or the CD player.

Nonetheless this issue is extremely annoying and I will for sure ask the dealer service to rectify the problem.

The seat belt warning is also quite annoying, I am all for a warning signal but this one is a bit too much (loud and repetitive).

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem I'm trying to figure out a pattern as to why the radio will come on so loud at start up. I don't use my USB or Satellite Radio, so it's not that. I just use regular FM. The last time this occurred was 3 weeks ago. In the meantime, I have contacted my dealer and he checking with Dodge. So far no word yet. Keep me posted with your problem and I do the same. Thanks

We have the base model radio with no bells and whistles. Radio has been ordered according to the dealer. Has been at least 10 days since the order was placed and they have failed to contact me. I have left several messages and inquiries about the radio and have no response. Good Luck to you. Took a survey from a car report site last night. The Journey got poor marks in my book. I am probably going to get a lawyer to see if I can't make Chrysler buy it back.

Same issue they change the Radio 2 Time did not fix the problem. I think they will need a software FIX. When the problem occure look at the equalizer setting it get reset each time the problem happen.

My service adviser has just informed me today that Dodge has release a Information Bulletin regarding to this problem and are working on it. Stay tune.

Any into on this Bullentin? Was just at the Dealer here, they never heard of the problem, although there was an update to the Uconnect 4.3 which they did, but it happened again as I was driving out of the lot.?@@!

Will be calling 1-800# if I get any more info will post it up.

My service adviser told me it was just release and that they are working on the problem.

He told me it was a Flash Bulletin

Any luck at your dealer or the 1-800 number? After a month my did it again (volume loud)

Hey everyone.

I got my journey last week.

Mine did that on the first day i got it and do it once in while.

Any new on that problem?

I finally went to the dealer with the journey and they said dodge was aware of the issue and they are working on a CD update for the radio.

they have 2 update right now but none of them corect the volume problem. they should have it mid-end october.

My radio was updated with the new software on Tuesday. So far so good.

Updating CD Software for the radio did not work. The radio came on loud again today when I first turned on the engine.

Same problem here. We have had the journey less than a week but this has happened 4 or 5 times already :/

bigtsr

I have not experienced this situation yet on my June built DJ with only th 4.3 radio.

I was checking the programming and found that the setting for speed compensated

volume was set to "OFF" and I left it at that setting.

Has anyone tried turning that to OFF to see if it's related to the problem?

I tried it in the "off" position and the problem is still there.
