15 Best BACOLOD TOURIST SPOTS (The City of Smiles)

 alt=

Ah, the “City of Smiles”. If you’re looking for the best place to spend your vacation here in the Philippines , one of your best choices has got to be Bacolod City. There are lots and lots of fun and exciting things to do here such as exploring historical landmarks, visiting natural wonders, and of course, enjoying an unforgettable gastronomic adventure!

I know, I know. One of the first things that automatically come to mind when we talk about Bacolod City is the iconic delicacy that every Filipino loves. Can you guess it? Yup! I’m talking about the delicious Bacolod Chicken Inasal . There’s absolutely no better way to enjoy this delicious dish than eating it right here in Bacolod. Oh, and you should also consider trying some of Bacolod’s famous delicacies like Kansi, Piaya, Napoleones, Batchoy, and a whole lot more.

The incredible thing about Bacolod is that even though it’s located in the province, the city can still offer high-end amenities and facilities just like other metropolises in the country.

What’s even better is that the traffic here is much less! And lastly, there’s a beautiful reason why Bacolod City has been hailed as the City of Smiles. It just means that the culture and the people in this city are very welcoming and inviting that can make you feel at home every time. So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and join me for another adventure as we explore the 15 Best Tourist Spots in Bacolod!

1. The Ruins

Number one on the list and probably the most controversial cultural landmark in Bacolod is The Ruins. It’s kinda like the iconic Taj Mahal of India but with a far more tragic ending. The Ruins Mansion was originally built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, an extremely rich Filipino Bachelor in the 1900s who wanted to express his love to Maria Braga. Also known as the Nutsberry Garden, the mansion was then eventually destroyed because Filipino guerillas were against Don Mariano’s decision to harbor some Japanese soldiers during the heights of World War II.

Ultimately, the spectacular mansion was destroyed and burned to the ground. But what’s really amazing is that the pillars and arches of the mansion remained standing, making it a beautiful ancient landmark as of this day.

Indeed, The Ruins is one of the most popular tourist spots in Bacolod because it’s an aesthetic location to take some pictures, have a nice dinner, and just admire the rich history of its past. Especially if you know about the tragic backstory of something this grand and beautiful. CHECK THE BEST HOTELS IN BACOLOD

2. Negros Museum

Of course, your trip to Bacolod wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Negros Museum. It’s the perfect way to know more about the City of Smiles’ rich culture and history. Located at the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol Complex, this unique museum doesn’t house any archaeological artifacts. Why? Because it wants to highlight the delightful Negrense lifestyle and society.

The museum aims to showcase to the world why Bacolod City is considered the happiest place in the country, so be sure not to miss out! Oh, and aside from the museum tours, you can also take a quick break at the equally beautiful Museum Café.

3. Negros Capitol Park and Lagoon

The Negros Capital Park and Lagoon is also a nice place to explore the city of Bacolod where I’m sure you’ll meet a bunch of wonderful people, spot some hidden cultural gems, and ultimately know the city better. The huge park covers an area of about 3 hectares and is ideally located at the heart of the city.

While walking around, you’ll be able to spot two incredible sculptures highlighting the diverse culture of Bacolod City, these are the Paghimud-os Monument and the carabao masterpieces by Italian sculptor Francesco Riccardo Monti. Oh, and having a picture with the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol Building in your background is also a must when you visit here!

4. San Sebastian Church

Another must-visit landmark in Bacolod City is no other than the San Sebastian Church also known as the Catedral de San Sebastián de Bacolod, one of the most famous religious institutions in the country. This three-arched 19th-century Baroque-style cathedral attracts a lot of tourists, especially Catholic pilgrims, from different parts of the world.

San Sebastian Church

The facade and the architecture of the church itself are already a gem you must see. So whether you’re visiting to offer prayers or just to catch a glimpse of Bacolod’s center of religion, adding the beautiful San Sebastian Church to the list is definitely the right thing to do.

5. Pope John Paul II Tower

One of the highlights of Bacolod City’s colorful history is when the late Pope John Paul II visited the city on February 20, 1981. Being one of the most dedicated Catholic provinces, the Pope’s visit was definitely appreciated by the Negrense people. Numerous festivities, events, and programs were held to commemorate Pope John Paul II and one prime example is the construction of Pope John Paul II Tower. This 7-story building which serves as a pilgrimage center became one of Bacolod’s significant landmarks because of its history and the statue of Pope John Paul II erected at the building’s entrance.

6. Panaad Park and Stadium, Bacolod City

Another one of Bacolod’s pride and most popular tourist spots is Panaad Park and Stadium. This 25-hectare park serves as the home of some of the Philippines’ prestigious sporting events like the ASEAN Games, Palarong Pambansa, Philippine Football League Games, and many more.

Built in the year 1997, the stadium consists of a rubberized oval where athletes and even locals can take their exercise and work out. The park is also surrounded by about 60,000 Eucalyptus trees. Yup! 60,000. There’s really no better place to work out and jog in the morning in Bacolod other than Panaad Park and Stadium! Oh, and aside from the huge field, there are also Olympic-sized swimming pools inside the park where you can go for a quick swim. Just don’t forget to ask permission, alright?

7. Experience the Masskara Festival

Well, aside from unraveling Bacolod City’s most beautiful landmarks, another great thing to do in the City of Smiles is to experience the iconic Masskara Festival. This annual festival held every 4th of October represents the resilience and creativity of the Negrense people.

Masskara Festival

The Masskara Festival was created to uplift the spirits of the people after a devastating tragedy hit the province in the 1980s. Colorful masks, costumes, and exciting activities all await the guests attending the Masskara Festival! It’s also the perfect time to immerse yourself in the wonderful culture of Bacolod and try out all their delicious delicacies and treats. This is also the best time to buy different souvenirs and pasalubongs because there will surely be lots and lots of bazaars set up around the city.

8. CALEA Pastries

And just like what I keep on saying, definitely, one of the best things to do in Bacolod City is going on a gastronomic adventure. Well, that’s exactly what we’ll be doing right now! Our next destination is the famous CALEA Pastries & Coffee. A lot of people who’ve been to Bacolod City are saying that your trip to the City of Smile wouldn’t be complete if you haven’t tried CALEA’s best-selling pastries and coffee.

CALEA Pastries

Located along Lacson Street, CALEA offers a wide variety of cakes such as Chocolate Cakes, Cheesecakes, Frozen Cakes, and also Hot and Iced Coffees. One of the best-sellers and something I would personally recommend is their Chocolate Mud Pie. It’s amazingly delicious so be sure not to miss out!

9. Sharyn’s Cansi House

Another popular food trip experience a lot of people are crazy about is dining at Sharyn’s Cansi House. As we all know, Cansi or Kansi is one of Bacolod City’s iconic delicacies. Kansi is a Filipino sour soup dish made of Beef shanks usually paired with jackfruit, kamias, tomato, garlic, and other seasonings.

Sharyn’s Cansi House

The beef is boiled until it reaches a gelatinous consistency which is what locals love. Basically, Kansi is the delicious combination of both Bulalo and Sinigang so trust me, you’ll never regret tasting this heavenly creation! And the best place to eat Kansi not only in Bacolod but in the entire country is definitely Sharyn’s Cansi House. Since 1986, this has been the go-to Kansi eatery in Bacolod City so make sure to drop by!

10. Mambukal Mountain Resort

Well, as I’ve mentioned earlier, Bacolod City isn’t only about historical, cultural, and religious landmarks. The city is also known for its amazing natural wonders! One best example is the Mambukal Mountain Resort. If you want to experience the beauty of nature at its finest, booking your vacation here at Mambukal is probably the best way to do it.

Situated at 1,200 feet above sea level and covering an area of about 23.6 hectares at the foothills of Mt. Kanlaon, the mountain resort offers bunches of fun and exciting activities to get you closer to nature. From natural hot sulfur springs to boating lagoons, swimming pools, and many more, I’m sure that guests will really have a wonderful time just chilling out, relaxing, and admiring the beauty of nature.

Side Trips Near Bacolod

11. Lakawon Island

Now that we’re done exploring the beautiful city of Bacolod, let us now discover some hidden gems near the city! The first one we’ll visit is the one and only Lakawon Island. This 16-hectare banana-shaped island is easily one of the most popular island destinations in Western Visayas .

Lakawon Island

From its white-sand beaches, shady coconut trees, and glamorous cottages and resort facilities, I’m sure that you’ll have the best summer of your life here. Lakawon is indeed a world-class resort and spa that you should add to your list of must-visit destinations in Negros Occidental . Why? Well, it’s already an all-in package allowing tourists to sit back, relax, and enjoy the tropical paradise life!

12. Balay Negrense

Balay Negrense, on the other hand, is another prized gem by the Negros Occidental province. This ancestral house and museum are owned by Victor Fernandez Gaston, son of one of the pioneer sugar barons in Negros. Balay Negrense attracts a lot of tourists simply because of its old-world beauty and architecture.

Balay Negrense

The house showcases what it’s like to live as a member of a powerful family of sugar barons in the late 19th century. Personal artifacts, collections, and perfectly-preserved antique furniture are housed inside the ancestral house. I’m sure that history buffs and scholars will have a great time here!

13. Pulang Tubig Falls

I know, I know. I was intrigued by the name too when I first read it! The iconic Pulang Tubig Falls of Mt. Patag in Silay City, Negros Occidental has been attracting tourists from different parts of the country for many years already. To answer your questions, here are a few origin stories about the controversial name of the waterfalls. Are you ready? Here it goes! One story suggests that the name “Pulang Tubig” or Red Water is said to have come from the blood of Japanese soldiers killed during World War II. Another possible reason is that the red water is said to have been caused by the sulfuric reaction of the river stones along the water bed. Well, no matter what the true story about Pulang Tubig Falls really is, only one thing’s for sure. Its beauty is truly enchanting.

Pulang Tubig Falls

Towering at a height of about 80 meters, Pulang Tubig Falls easily becomes a gigantic and amazing sight for visitors. The best part? You can take a swim and dive any time of the day because the crystal clear waters are always cold! Oh, and also make sure to be wary of your surroundings because this might be your chance to meet some of the Philippines’ endangered animal species up close like the Visayan Warty Pig, Philippine Spotted Deer, and the Bleeding Heart Pigeon.

14. Bernardino Jalandoni Museum

Another one of Negros Occidental’s highly esteemed cultural landmarks is the Bernardino Jalandoni Museum also known as the Pink House because of the captivating pink paint of its facade. This huge ancestral house in Silay City became recognized as a “Natural Historical Landmark” by the National Historical Institute.

Bernardino Jalandoni Museum

The house was built in 1908 when Don Bernardino and his beautiful wife, Doña Isabela Lopez came to Negros Occidental to start their family. Up to this date, lots and lots of tourists visit the Bernardino Jalandoni Museum to know more about the province’s colorful history through its antique furniture, artifacts, and collections.

15. Ramon Hofileña Heritage House

And last but definitely not the least in our Bacolod City adventure is the incredible Ramon Hofileña Heritage House which is again situated in Silay City. Ramon Hofileña is known as the Father of Heritage Conservation which is why it isn’t surprising that you’ll get to witness up close some of the finest and rarest Filipino art collections of the 19th century.

The works of legendary Filipino artists like Juan Luna, Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, Vicente Manansala, and many more are perfectly preserved in this mansion. Moreover, the antique furniture and house equipment in the house are also quite a sight to see! And of course, the architecture of the heritage house itself is also something that will make you feel like you’re traveling back in time.

THINGS TO DO IN BACOLOD

1.experience masskara festival, why is it one of the top things to do in bacolod.

Masskara Festival, the festival of smiles, is one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines, held every October in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. The term “Masskara” was coined from the words “mass” (crowd) and “kara” (face), which literally means “Festival of Many Faces”. During the celebration, Bacolod exude an enchanted atmosphere as masked dancers fill the streets, dancing to the tunes of live music, and many events are organized in the city.

THINGS TO DO IN BACOLOD: MASSKARA FESTIVAL

Interestingly, Masskara Festival was founded sometime in 1980 and was first held back in October 19, 1980  to help ease the misery of the locals. A tragedy struck in the evening of April 22, 1980 when M/S Don Juan, a ferry carrying about 1,000 passengers, most of them are Negrense, collided with M/T Tacloban City tanker en route to Bacolod from Manila.  The ferry instantly sunk off shore Mindoro, killing about 750 passengers.

2. FEAST ON CHICKEN INASAL

Why is it one of the best things to do in bacolod.

Mention Bacolod food and chicken inasal (grilled chicken) will come to mind. Chicken inasal is Bacolod’s most famous local delicacy known for its smoky taste and yellowish look.  There are several eateries and restaurants in Bacolod serving chicken inasal , but the best place to go is Manokan Country .  It is said that back in the 80’s, the inasal food stalls where just scattered on the sidewalks, until the local government brought them organized them to create what is known as Manokan Country. You can choose from several restaurants serving chicken inasal here.

3. RELAX AT THE CAPITOL BUILDING AND LAGOON

Why is it one of the top bacolod tourist spots.

Built in 1927 and completed 6 years after, the Capitol Building in Bacolod, which is the official seat of the governor of the province, exhibits the Beaux-Arts architectural design that is inspired by French Neocolonialism.  Based on anecdotes ,the city planner Daniel Burnham, one of the celebrated American architects who studied in Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris visited the Philippines upon the invitation of the then Governor General William Cameron Forbes to visit the Philippines.  He recommended William Parsons as consulting architect, who structured the architectural office of the Bureau of Public Works, composed of American and Filipino architects including  Juan Nakpil, Tomas Bautista Mapua, and Juan de Guzman Arellano who implemented the plan.  The Capitol Building was declared as National Historical Landmark in 1994.

things to do in Bacolod: NEGROS CAPITOL AND LAGOON

The Capitol Building is shaped like the letter E, and the neck-swivelling façade is fringed by towering, massive colonnades. The sculptures at the Capitol Building are believed to be designed by the works of Guillermo Tolentino, the National Artist for Sculpture.

Near the man-made lagoon at the Capitol Grounds, you’ll notice striking statues painted in gold. The carabao (water buffalo) and a woman is attributed to Italian sculpture Frances Riccardo Monti, while the man riding a female carabao was made by Negrense artist Felix Garzon.

There’s also a memorial for the war veterans at the heart of the Capitol Ground.

4. VISIT SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH

Why is a famous bacolod tourist spot.

The San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod city was originally constructed in 1825 and was renovated towards the end of the century. The 2 bell towers (the original wooden church has 1 bell tower only) were built in 1885 and eventually the bells were relocated to the churchyard for the preservation.  In 1933, San Sebastian Church was declared a cathedral when Bacolod was converted into a diocese.

BACOLOD SIDE TRIPS

Here’s a list of top tourist spots in Negros Occidental that can be done as a day trip from Bacolod city.

12. THE RUINS

Why is it one of the top places to see near bacolod.

Mention Bacolod and The Ruins will immediately come to mind.  But this famous attraction is actually located in Talisay, not Bacolod.

Based on anecdotes, The Ruins was built as a reminder of great love. Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a sugar baron from Talisay, Negros Occidental fell in love with Maria Braga, a Portuguese from Macau.  They eventually got married, settled in Negros, and had 10 children. When Maria got pregnant with her 11 th child, she slipped in their bathroom and bled heavily. She couldn’t stand to go to the physician, so his husband had to request for a physician who lives in Silay.  It took 4 days for the physician to arrive by horse-drawn carriage and sadly, Maria and the child already passed away. Mariano was broken-hearted, he then decided to build an Italian-inspired mansion dedicated to his wife.  Unfortunately, during the World War II, the guerillas burned down the beautiful mansion to prevent the Japanese soldiers from using it as a military headquarters.   The frame of the mansion survived,  hence the name, like a testament of one great love that stood the test of time.

Address: Talisay, Bacolod

Open Hours: Daily 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Entrance Fee: (Adult) ₱100 ($2), (Seniors/PWD) ₱70 ($1.38), (Student) ₱60 ($1.18), (Child) ₱20

Mambukal Resort is a timeless nature resort  covering roughly 23.6 hectares of land at the foot of the mighty Mt.Kanlaon in Murcia, Negros Occidental.  It is the gateway to Mt.Kanlaon via the Wasay Trail.

Interestingly, Mambukal Resort was originally conceptualized by Kokichi Paul Ishawata, a Japanese architect, in 1927. This is why this place houses a Japanese-inspired bath house and a picnic garden.

Mambukal Resort is sprinkled with nature springs, jungle-clad mountains, and waterfalls.  The resort may seem old and forgotten, but once you take a leisurely walk around its surroundings, you’ll most likely appreciate the forest surrounding it.

If you are adventurous enough, you can hike the 7 waterfalls inside the confines of Mambukal Resort.  But if you have limited time like us, you can rent a motorbike (with driver) to the jumping off point if the 1st and 2 nd waterfall. 19.CHURCH OF THE ANGRY CHRIST

Situated in Victorias City in Negros Occidental, the St. Joseph the Worker Chapel (Church of the Angry Christ) features unique artistry and imagery of Jesus and the saints. Constructed 5 years after the World War II, it is hailed an Important Cultural Property of the Philippines. The structural design of this distinctive church  was created by Czech architect Antonin Raymond, who made sure that the building can withstand earthquakes.

The Church of the Angry Christ is owned by the wealthy sugar baron family – Osssorio Family, that is why it is sitting inside the confines of a sugar milling complex.  What makes this church unique is the depiction of Jesus Christ, instead of showing a compassionate image, he is shown here as angry. The rare mural was created by a Filipino born-artist Alfonso Ossorio, known for his surrealist works.

Meanwhile, the beautiful mosaics inside the church are made by Belgian Adelaide de Bethune. The brass plates in the pulpit and the baptistry designed by Bethune was made by Arcadio Anore.  The Filipino-looking wooden sculptures of saints, Mary and Joseph, and the images of the Stations of the Cross were created by Benjamin Valenciano. Interestingly, the brown skin of the Filipinized version of the religious themes were made of glass from beer bottles.

How to get to the Angry Christ Church:

1.From Bacolod City, ride a bus to Manapla.

2.Alight at Victorias Milling Company in Victorias City.

3.Take a tricycle to the Saint Joseph Church inside the Victorias Milling Company.

P.S. Apologies, my old hard drive  where the photos of the church is stored is defective so I can’t show you how it looks. But the church is worth checking.

Sipalay was once a local secret, but it’s slowly getting the attention that it deserves.  Getting here may be more than the adventure you bargained for, but it’s well worth it. Sipalay is sprinkled with gorgeous forest-fringed islets that beckon repeat visits.  For further details, do read my Sipalay blog through the link below.

Bacolod is called the City of Smiles because of its Masskara Festival and the locals who also have a smiling face. It’s also because this city can definitely make anyone smile!

This is one city that you can really call your second home, such as the ease of being in Bacolod alone. Read more to find out the best tourist spots in the city of smiles.

The Ruins at night

Bacolod is the Sugar Capital of the country, and it was how the people of old here gained wealth. A remnant of this time is The Ruins, a structure that was once the mansion of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a sugar baron.

This is one of the top tourist spots in Bacolod. It has a beautiful architecture still visible to this day, but it was burned down during World War II.

See our popular The Ruins Tours

Bacolod city half-day private tour with the ruins, lunch & transfers.

The Ruins isn’t as accessible as other places in the city. You could ask around the city center for a jeep going to the Pepsi Bottling Plant, and from there you could take a tricycle to the site.

Alternatively, you could take a cab directly to The Ruins or join a day trip in Bacolod .

2. Explore Negros Museum

Negros is a great place to be in, particularly because of the immersive experience it offers to tourists. It’s a museum that focuses not on storing artifacts, but on telling the interesting story of the Negros region.

Find flights to Bacolod :

Manila to Bacolod flights

Cebu to Bacolod flights

Davao to Bacolod flights

This is primarily a children’s museum but it also has something in store for the adults who want to learn something about Negros’ surprising role in the formation of the Philippine Republic.

Getting here is easy. Just ask to be taken to the Provincial Capitol Building where the museum is just a short walk from here.

3. Pray at San Sebastian Church

This is a structure that was opened to the public in 1882, and now holds the Bishop’s Palace within its grounds.

San Sebastian Church in Bacolod

The church closes at around 8 PM, so arrive early to see one of the more recognizable tourist spots in Bacolod!

Getting here is also easy. Just take a jeep bound for Manokan Country, and it passes right by the church.

4. Visit Pope John Paul II Tower

This is another sacred landmark in the city, dedicated to the now-Saint Pope John Paul II. This is in commemoration of the Pope’s visit to Bacolod.

The tower contains a lot of Papal memorabilia, including his Papal Throne and various photos of him and his visit. As a bonus, the top deck has a viewing section that sports a beautiful view of the Bacolod skyline.

Mambukal resort in Bacolod

Its claim to fame is its beautiful spring that flows down to seven waterfalls (hence its nickname, Seven Waterfalls). It’s a good trek if you want to see all seven!

Boating lagoon in Mambukal resort

To get here, hail a jeep going to Libertad. This will take you to the bus station that services the Mambukal area. Take the bus, and alight directly at the resort. You can also join a day tour of Mambukal Resort .

The travel time takes about an hour from the city center, and it’s one of the Bacolod tourist spots perfect for the outdoor lover.

6. Eat at Manokan Country

This is a small cluster of eateries located at the parking lot of SM Bacolod, so it’s very easy to find (just follow the directions from the airport).

Grilled chicken commonly known as Inasal in Bacolod

It’s also affordable. There are chicken parts too, such as intestines and chicken butt. By default, the stalls here don’t provide utensils due to the traditional way that the now-nationally famous inasal is eaten.

7. Go on a Day Trip to Silay

Silay is a neighboring city to the north and is actually the first stop towards your Bacolod visit if you’re coming from Manila.

Silay is just as good as Bacolod when it comes to historical markers, and you can go on a walking tour here! In fact, Silay is hailed as the country’s second “Museum City” after Vigan.

Check out El Ideal Bakery, which is the oldest bakeshop in Silay (don’t miss the local delicacies!). Balay Negrense, or the Victor Gaston House, contains artifacts from Silay’s heyday as the primary economic city of the Negros Region.

There’s also the Bernardino Jalandoni Museum and the San Diego Pro-Cathedral.

Check out the Cinco de Noviembre Marker too, which commemorates how the Negrenses bluffed their way into freedom during the Philippine Revolution.

For an interesting take on the country’s history, try a heritage excursion in Silay .

It’s true that the Negros region is a very multifaceted area, and this is best embodied by Bacolod and its warm and charming vibe.

7. Play a round of golf at Negros Occidental Golf & Country Club

Golf cart at Negros Golf & Country Club

Located just 4.4 kilometers away from The Ruins, Negros Occidental Golf & Country Club is the perfect detour for both beginner and experienced golfers. Formerly called the Marapara Golf & Country Club, this 45-hectare property is home to an 18-hole golf course that was designed by local golfing icon Luis Fernando “Golem” Silverio, the first Asian to play at The Masters.

While the country club has memberships, it accepts walk-in guests for a fee. For a hassle-free experience, book stay-and-play golf packages with Guide to the Philippines. This already comes with accommodations, transfers, and entrance fees.

Inexperienced golfers can have casual play here, while advanced golfers will enjoy the challenge provided by the water and bunker hazards, the tall trees, tricky sloping greens, and the sometimes strong winds.

Non-golfers can enjoy the clubhouse, which has a restaurant and a view of the 18th-hole green.

6 Best Things To Do In Bacolod

Posted on Last updated: 18 March 2024

Categories Philippines

The city of Bacolod, sits in the northwestern area of the island of Negros in the Philippines.

It’s also known as the City of Smiles, and, true to its name, the hospitable residents of Bacolod always greet you with a warm smile.

This vibrant city boasts a rich cultural heritage that blends Spanish and Filipino influences. All of which can be seen in the spectacular architecture, cuisine, and festivals.

We spent a week with friends exploring the Bacolod tourist spots and surrounding area. So here’s a list of our top things to do in Bacolod.

Table of Contents

1. The Ruins

The Ruins are definitely the most well known of the Bacolod tourist spots, come day or night. Even more so on a special occasion.

The Ruins are beautifully decorated and have lanes, gardens and arches making it a popular venue for weddings. There is also a restaurant where you can grab drinks, food and snacks.

We recommend visiting around sunset to see The Ruins at their most beautiful. This has to be one of the best things to do in the Philippines if you’re in Bacolod.

It’s one of the most famous and photographed destinations in Talisay/ Bacolod and formally known as the Taj Mahal of the Philippines.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on  Get Your Guide  available to book in advance.

2. Lakawon Island

Lakawon Island is an absolute paradise and just a short trip outside of the city. It consists of pristine white sand, turquoise waters and a family run beach resort.

This stunning beach is perfect for a day of relaxing in the sun and soaking up the island life with a cocktail in your hand.

After visiting many beaches on our Philippines itinerary , including those of Palawan and Cebu, we can honestly say that Lakawon Island is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen.

The fact that it’s not so mainstream or known by tourists makes it extra special.

Definitely up there for us as one of the best things to do in the Philippines .

3. Tawhai Floating Bar

Tawhai Floating Bar  is the largest floating bar in Asia and a must if you’re ever in Bacolod. It is only accessible via boat transfers from Lakawon Island .

Tawhai is actually a local dialect that translates to ‘relaxed’, and it certainly lives up to its name.

You can definitely sit back, chill and enjoy spectacular views of the Lakawon Island and much more.

Or, if you feel more like partying, drinks are flowing and music is playing, so the choice is yours!

Moreover, if you’re feeling really adventurous you can even jump into the spectacularly blue ocean from the 1st or 2nd decks of the boat.

Tawhai Floating Bar is a great way to spend some time and has to be one of the best things to do in Bacolod.

Tawhai Floating Bar Lakawon Floating Bar Lakawon Island Bacolod

4. Eat Healthy

We were searching for some healthy vegan food in the city and came across two amazing restaurants – Wholly Grounds and Fresh Start .

Wholly Grounds offers a delicious variety of organic, vegan, Filipino and Western dishes, including sandwiches, tacos, falafels and rice bowls. All pretty inexpensive and served up in beautiful surroundings by friendly staff.

Fresh Start is another organic and natural store with an adjoining cafe that serves a selection of amazingly fresh food including vegetarian and vegan options. This hip and trendy cafe is a joy to visit and the food is ‘top notch’.

We chose to alternate between these places every day for a week, they were that good!

In the Philippines, it’s hard to find nutritious, organic food, especially amongst the Bacolod tourist spots. So we were in our element when we found these two gems in the city centre.

Although ‘rice is life’ in the Philippines, it was nice to splash out on a good eggplant and hummus burger with sweet potato fries!

Wholly Grounds Bacolod Tourist Spots Things To Do In Bacolod Where To Eat In Bacolod

5. Volunteer At Pawssion Project

Not quite one of the Bacolod tourist spots but something we’re very passionate about.

Pawssion Project was actually the reason we decided to visit Bacolod. Our friend who is the founder of this incredible organisation is so selfless and has such a passion for making the Philippines a better place for dogs.

She believes that dogs are voiceless, so we have to be their voice and let them fulfil a happy, loving life. She works hard to spread the word across the whole nation and set an example of how dogs should be treated.

Because of that, we fell in love with her passion and had to pay the dogs at the shelter a visit.

We felt had to spread some love and raise awareness of this new establishment that really deserves all the exposure it can get.

Even during the week we spent in Bacolod, we saw a drastic change in the life of some of the dogs. So if you’re ever thinking about paying a visit to Bacolod, you should definitely find Malou and the shelter.

6. Duyan Cafe

Duyan Cafe was one of our favourite spots on our tour of Bacolod. It’s perfect for foodies, photographers and nature lovers.

‘Duyan’ translates to cradle or hammock in English, from the native Filipino language Tagalog. And what better setting than to sit in a hammock and look over the surrounding mountains whilst enjoying your breakfast.

Serving up fresh cakes, sandwiches and of course local rice dishes, Duyan Cafe is a definite hot spot amongst both locals and tourists.

The perfect spot to start your day off on the right footing!

BACOLOD ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itineraries

BACOLOD ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itineraries

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

There are places that you will remember not because of what you saw but how it made you feel. Bacolod is one of those places.

Bacolod doesn’t have the spectacular sights that other destinations in the Philippines boldly and loudly brag about. But what she lacks in visual treats, she makes up for by delighting the other senses. When she welcomes you into her home, she cooks for you and makes every meal unforgettable. Her chicken inasal will take you to heaven and her desserts will bring you back to earth. And the stories from her past are always worth listening to.

She’s in good company too. Bacolod may not have the sweeping landscapes, but her posse have more than their share. Neighbor Murcia makes a splash with her waterfalls. Just 4-5 hours away are Kabankalan, Cauayan, and Sipalay, all waiting to showcase their natural splendor to those who go the extra mile.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding Bacolod and Negros Occidental

Bacolod is widely known for three things: sweets, smiles, and the Masskara Festival. Oh, and chicken inasal. So okay, make that four things. Haha. It is the capital of Negros Occidental, one of the biggest provinces in the country in terms of land area and population. Yet, a big part of its territory remains unknown to non-residents. Lately, however, the beaches of Sipalay are beginning to get a lot of attention.

Negros Occidental has 13 cities (including independent Bacolod) and 19 municipalities. That’s a lot of cities in just one province. But before you conjure up images of skyscrapers, know that Bacolod is the only one that is highly urbanized. The others are more like small towns, more laid-back and still pretty rustic.

  • Language : Hiligaynon (Ilonggo). English is widely understood.
  • Currency : Philippine peso (PhP). PhP100 = USD2, EUR 1.65, KRW 22000, JPY218
  • Mode of payment : Cash. ATMs are all around Bacolod, but they turn much fewer in other cities and municipalities. If you’re exploring other parts of Negros Occidental from Bacolod, you might want to withdraw money while you’re in the capital. Credit cards are often accepted in upscale establishments in Bacolod, but cash is still preferred.

How to Get to Bacolod

The Bacolod-Silay Airport is the gateway to the province. Both Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Cebu Pacific Air (CEB) fly to Bacolod multiple times a day.

How to get to from the airport to bacolod city center.

The airport is in Silay City, located around 15km from Bacolod city center. Here are your options:

  • By van (shuttle service) . You’ll find them stationed just in front of the airport’s arrival area. Fare: P150. The journey terminates at SM City Bacolod, where you can take a taxi or jeepney to your hotel.
  • By taxi or Grab Taxi . The expensive option, but more convenient if you have lotsa luggage. Fare ranges from P250-500 depending on whether they use a meter or not. If you’re a Grab user, you can use GrabTaxi. That’s what I did and paid only P250.
  • By tricycle + jeepney . I don’t recommend this if you have bags with you because it involves a number of transfers and can be quite exhausting. But you may ride a tricycle from outside the airport area to Silay City center, where you can take the bus or jeepney to Bacolod North Terminal. From here, take another jeepney or cab to your hotel.

Where to Stay in Bacolod

The two highest scored accommodations on Traveloka are The Suites at Calle Nueva and Mainstreet Pension House , the latter for budget travelers. Calle Nueva’s rates are only around P1000 per night for a single room and P1500 for a double room. Mainstreet Pension’s, P700 for a double room. Unfortunately, we have tried neither because both were fully booked during our visit. But if you want to check ’em out, follow the links below.

We have tried three hotels in Bacolod so far: Circle Inn, Avenue Suites, and Negrense Suites. More than the rooms, what we loved about the first two is their location. Circle Inn is just 5 blocks from the South Terminal, which is great if you plan on going to the beaches of Sipalay or Cauayan. Avenue Suites is just a short walk from Calea and 21 Restaurant, which are foodie must-tries in the city. Branches of Merzci and Bongbong’s are also nearby so you don’t have to go far for pasalubong shopping. I didn’t like Negrense Suite so much.

Things to do in and around bacolod.

As a highly urbanized city, getting around is no problem in Bacolod. The most usual form of transportation for locals is the jeepney, although the routes can be confusing for first timers. On my first trip here back in 2011, this was my preferred mode because I was working on an extremely tight budget. I got lost multiple times, boarding the wrong jeep. Hahaha.

Fortunately, the Bacolodnons are some of the friendliest you will ever meet in your life, and they will not hesitate to help if you ask. Sometimes, you don’t even need to ask.

If you don’t like the jeepney, there’s always the taxi. It’s a great choice if you’re a party of 2-4, so you can split the fare. On my most recent trip with friends, we took the cab most of the time. When we couldn’t find any, we just used Grab Taxi .

Another way to do it is joining a tour or hiring a travel agency. Sadly, I don’t have much info about it because I chose to pull a DIY.

Here are some of the things you can do in Bacolod and neighboring areas.

Fill your tummy with local favorites!

bacolod tourist spot 2023

Bacolod is one of the best food destinations in the country, enriched by centuries of diverse culinary influences, from traditional Filipino to Spanish heirlooms. We have tried (and loved) the following:

  • Sharyn’s Cansi House , a humble but multi-awarded hole-in-the-wall serving Bacolod’s best bowls of cansi (P300). Cansi (or kansi) is a soupy dish traditionally composed of beef shanks, unripe jackfruit, and lemongrass. Also try their original Crispy Cansi (P450). The servings here are huge, good for 3-4 hungry pax.
  • Aboy’s Restaurant , a turo-turo style restaurant famous for their seafood (grilled blue marlin, squid fats adobo) and steamed mushrooms. They also offer local favorites like pangat (similar to laing) and chicken inasal. Closed on Sundays.
  • 21 Restaurant , a more dressy establishment boasting a diverse menu that includes savory Pinoy dishes with modern twists and western options. According to the waiters, their specialty is the batchoy (P110). Their squid teriyaki (P240) and fried isul (P160) are also curiously satisfying.
  • Manokan Country, a complex of a dozen stalls serving Bacolod’s most sought-after gastronomic treat — chicken inasal. I was able to try two of these stalls: Nenas Beth and Aida’s. Aida’s is arguably the most popular. Most blogs and even travel shows on TV that featured Bacolod gave it a shoutout. But I actually liked Nenas Beth better. It wasn’t really the taste; they taste identical, to be honest. It’s more about how it was cooked. Also, just to manage your expectations, know that these are not air-conditioned. They don’t provide utensils by default either because inasal is best enjoyed using bare hands. (You can ask for utensils, though.)
  • Calea , the city’s most widely known dessert place. Order their bestsellers: white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sauce and chocolate cake. The best thing about Calea is that they serve awesome-tasting cakes in generous servings at a low price. We ordered 4 slices of cakes and 3 cups of hot tea, and our bill was only at P560.

There are several others like 18th St. Pala-pala Seafood Grill , Diotay’s , Chicken House , and Masskara Chicken . But we were only able to try the five above.

MassKara Festival

The MassKara Festival is an annual event that begins in early October and culminates in a series of celebrations on the fourth Sunday of the same month. The tradition is said to have started in the 1980s in the midst of crises: (1) when the city’s sugar-powered economy hit an all-time low after the advent of substitutes, and (2) in the middle of mourning after a sea tragedy that killed many locals. To bring back the positive atmosphere and champion Bacolod’s cheerful spirit, the festival was created, true to its moniker, City of Smiles.

If you’re visiting outside October, take home your own mask from Jojo Vito Designs Gallery . Owned by award-winning mask designer Jojo Vito, this is the largest collection of masks in the city. Made using local materials, his works have been exhibited and exported abroad, and he has been the official designer of the mask used by the Masskara Queen for years. You can have your own mask customized too (although you may need to let them know in advance). Aside from masks, you’ll also find decors and other novelty items. Jojo is a travel blogger too!

The Ruins in Talisay City

bacolod tourist spot 2023

Constructed in the early 1900s, the Ruins was once a mansion that was said to be the biggest residential structure in the area at the time. Sugar baron Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson had it built in the middle of a sugar plantation for his Portuguese first wife. The architecture is Italianate and its columns neo-Romanesque. At the height of World War II, the US Armed Forces in the Far East and Filipino guerrilla soldiers set the entire mansion on fire in order to prevent the Japanese from using it as their headquarters. What was left were the columns, the facade and the floor.

A lot has changed since our first visit in 2011. For starters, the entrance fee has taken a major leap: from P50 in 2011 to P100 today. The area has also been extended to make room for a parking space, baggage deposit counter, ticket booth, and food kiosks.

Opening Hours : 8am-8pm Entrance Fee : P100 Parking Fee : P50

Mambukal Resort (Seven Falls)

Located 35 minutes away from Bacolod, Mambukal is a 23-hectare resort township managed directly by the Province of Negros Occidental. Its main feature is a stream that flows and creates seven waterfalls along the way. There are also boating lagoons and water holes. It’s both for those who wish to relax and who seek adventure. Staying overnight is possible too.

Entrance Fee : Adults, P50; Kids, P20.

Silay City Walking Tour

bacolod tourist spot 2023

Also north of Bacolod lies Silay City. Its streets, sandwiched by elegant ancestral houses, make for a good sightseeing trail. Thirty one of these houses have been named as historical landmarks, making Silay the second “museum city” in the Philippines, after Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Here are some of the heritage sites you might want to squeeze into your itinerary.

  • Balay Negrense . Also called the “Victor F. Gaston House,” Balay Negrense was built during the height of Silay as the region’s cultural and economic center. Operating hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 9am-5pm. Entrance Fee: P60 adults, P30 students.
  • El Ideal Bakery . It is the oldest bakeshop in the city, but still completely functional. El Ideal continues to offer delicious pastries and other local delicacies. Operating hours: Daily, 6:30am-6:30pm
  • Bernardino Jalandoni Museum . First owned by Don Bernardino and Dona Ysabel Jalandoni, the house was completed in 1908. Features a great mixture of native and foreign inspirations. Opening hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 9am-5pm. Entrance Fee: P60 adults, P30 students.
  • San Diego Pro-Cathedral . Built in 1925 and designed by Italian architect Lucio Bernasconi (Romanesque architecture).
  • Cinco de Noviembre Marker , where the Negros Revolution was planned. The event created a new government that was run by Negrense Natives. The revolution ended the control of the Spaniards of the island, albeit for a brief period of time.

Note that most ancestral houses and museums like Balay Negrense and Bernardino Jalandoni Museum are closed on Mondays. Don’t make the same mistake we did the first time. LOL.

Bacolod City Tour

bacolod tourist spot 2023

Don’t expect visually arresting sites in Bacolod. Most of the attractions within the city are of historical and cultural significance for the locals, not much for tourists looking for IG-worthy backgrounds. See the following landmarks:

  • Bacolod Baywalk
  • Negros Museum
  • San Sebastian Church
  • Pope John Paul II Tower
  • Capitol Park and Lagoon

Some of these you can easily visit while walking around. For example, on the way to Manokan Country, we made it past San Sebastian Church.

Beyond Bacolod

Bacolod is your gateway to Negros Occidental, and the province has so much more wonders tucked neatly on its bottom edges. The north will acquaint you with its past and feed you speechless, but the south will stun you with its natural beauty.

bacolod tourist spot 2023

Just 4-6 hours from Bacolod are the municipality of Cauayan , bursting with marine life, and the city of Sipalay , laced with sugar beaches. Since you’re already in Negros Occidental, you might as well set aside a couple of days for these. You will not regret it.

We’ll be creating separate travel guides for Danjugan Island and Sipalay soon, so make sure you check back.

For this itinerary, prepare to shell out P8000-P8500 per person. There are many other ways of bringing down the cost of the Sipalay leg, but we’ll discuss that in a separate Sipalay Travel Guide post (which we will be publishing very soon).

Other Tips for the Poor Traveler

  • It’s easy to overindulge your tastebuds in Bacolod, thereby burning a lot of cash on food . You can try Bacolod’s most highly praised restaurants without overspending and overeating by planning your meals well. Ask the wait staff what their specialties are and order just that. For example, if on the same night you’ll be dining at 21 Restaurant and Calea, have your main course in 21 Restaurant and skip the dessert. Get your sugar fix at Calea instead. This way, you get to try the bestsellers of both restos.
  • For pasalubong, drop by El Ideal Bakery for their guapple pie and Virgie’s or Roli’s for their napoleones. If you don’t have much time, you can always enter any of the countless Merczi or BongBong’s stores around the city.
  • Set aside P200 for terminal fee for your exit flight. Yep. I know.

Bacolod Travel Guide: How to Get to Bacolod from Manila?

To go to Bacolod, we traveled by plane from Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) to Bacolod (Silay International Airport). The travel time takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. We left Manila at around 4 AM and arrived in Bacolod at 5 AM.

We booked our flight with Philippine Airlines (PAL) for our flight to Bacolod then Cebu Pacific when we went back to Manila.

You can also opt to travel by ferry . It’s cheaper but the travel time is about 20 hours which is not advisable if you’re trying to maximize your time. If you want some adventure you can buy a ticket from 2GO Travel , they’re the only ferry company that operates a Manila to Bacolod route, and they sail daily.

On our way home, we traveled from Bacolod to Iloilo by ferry then from Iloilo to Manila by plane.

Bacolod Travel Guide: 5 Things to do in Bacolod

1. travel back in time at the ruins.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Fatima Turla | ファティマ | 파티마 (@lifeoffat_) on Jan 21, 2019 at 3:58am PST

If you like seeing old buildings, then The Ruins is a must place to visit. Being a fan of history, I love going to places like this and I was really excited when we’re on our way here. The building’s structure is well-preserved and you can still see the beauty in it. The Ruins also has a beautiful wide garden where you can take a really good shot of the building.

2. Be a Kid Again at Campuestohan Highland Resort

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Fatima Turla | ファティマ | 파티마 (@lifeoffat_) on Jan 21, 2019 at 4:07am PST

One of the best things to do in Bacolod is to go here! Aside from swimming, visitors could enjoy the resort’s beautiful view, and you’ll see a lot of cool structures like dinosaurs. This is also the place where you can see cute hobbit-like houses. Due to its location that’s on a mountain, it gets very cold here, that’s why we didn’t get the chance to swim. This place is surely for people of all ages! I personally enjoyed our time here. Plus factor is the food in the restaurant inside which is super worth it!

3. Explore the Mambukal Mountain Resort

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Fatima Turla | ファティマ | 파티마 (@lifeoffat_) on Mar 8, 2019 at 8:20am PST

To get closer to nature, Mambukal Mountain Resort is a must place to visit. This resort was developed by a Japanese Architect named Kokichi Paul Ishiwata in 1927 and was originally started as a bathhouse. You’d definitely enjoy your stay here. You can swim at the mountain’s private pool, do kayaking, and try its popular bathhouse that will relieve all your stress.

4. Immerse Yourself in Hot Water at the Ishiwata Bath House

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Ramon Figurasin Mariñas (@sansiramon) on May 7, 2020 at 11:59pm PDT

Ishiwata Bath House can be found within Mambukal Mountain Resort. Japanese Architect Kokichi Paul Ishiwata designed the bathhouse and still in use today. Japanese people believe that soaking in a hot bath not only provides cleansing and relaxation but can also improve blood circulation, reduce fatigue, and helps with shoulder stiffness. In this bathhouse, you’ll experience a very relaxing Japanese-style bathing.

5. Try Bacolod’s Specialty, “Chicken Inasal”

Bacolod Travel Guide: Sample 3 Day Itinerary

Please take note that this is a DIY guide. In addition, we didn’t really plan our itinerary, all activities we did in Bacolod are on the spot decision. We didn’t book our accommodation in advance and we didn’t book a tour as well. During our trip what we did was used a google map, searched the internet, read blogs, and asked the locals in everything we need to know.

Bacolod Travel Guide – Day 1

Searched for Accommodation

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Mary Ann Burac (@marianggala) on Jul 11, 2015 at 12:51am PDT

On our first day, the first thing we did was searched for a place to stay in. As mentioned above, we didn’t book accommodation in advance. We just rode a jeepney, asked the driver to bring us to the plaza, which is the central part of Bacolod City. The locals also told us that the plaza is consists of plenty of hostels and hotels that we can choose from. Upon searching we decided to stay in Bacolod Pension Plaza. We’ll talk more about this accommodation below.

Buy Souvenirs

Since our accommodation is situated in a very convenient location, we are near SM Bacolod and public markets. We decided to do the opposite way of DIY traveling, we bought souvenirs on our first day. If you’re the type who likes buying a lot of souvenirs, this is not a good idea unless you have enough cash with you and you’re confident enough that your money can survive until your last day in Bacolod. We didn’t buy so many souvenirs so we’re fine.

Did Grocery Shopping

We decided to not spoil ourselves with foods (except Inasal of course, lol) so we did grocery shopping and bought canned goods, instant noodles, and some bread that we can eat.

Explore the Plaza

The Bacolod Public Plaza is a nice place to walk by and it looks wonderful especially at night with all the lightings. We roam around the plaza in the evening and took a lot of photos of the place.

Visit the 19th-century San Sebastian Cathedral

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by @rodelosreyes on Dec 18, 2015 at 5:11am PST

This cathedral is aesthetically beautiful. It’s located just beside the Bacolod Public Plaza and it literally stands out. If you love taking photos of old churches, this is a must-visit.

Bacolod Travel Guide – Day 2

Our 2nd day is really the start of our trip to Bacolod.

Campuestohan Highland Resort

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Fatima Turla | ファティマ | 파티마 (@lifeoffat_) on Mar 8, 2019 at 8:05am PST

We woke up early and prepared for a trip to Campuestohan Highland Resort. We asked the receptionist on how to go there from our place. They told us that there’s a van/shuttle available in the morning that travels to Campuestohan. We rode a jeepney first, for only about 5 minutes, we just told the jeepney driver that we’re heading to Campuestohan so we need to go to the van terminal (though it’s not really a terminal since it’s just located in front of a convenient store. Unfortunately, I forgot what convenient store was that). Just to be sure, and if you’re doing a DIY trip as well, asking locals is the best thing to do since the van pick-up point might change location.

The trip to Campuestohan costs around PHP 70.00 – PHP 150.00 ($1.39-$3) and the travel time is about 45 minutes. Upon reaching the resort, we were in awe. The place is big and really beautiful. The weather at that time was also cold since we visited Bacolod in January. From the resort, you can see a splendid view of almost half of the entire province of Negros Occidental.

Travel Guide to Bacolod, Philippines [a DIY Guide to the City of Smiles]

This is also the place where you can see hobbit houses, enormous figures of dinosaurs, and popular superheroes that both kids and adults would enjoy. I personally love this place and wanted to go back to stay in any of the hobbit houses and dip in the pool. We weren’t able to do those since we only stayed in the resort for half a day and it was crazy cold so dipping in the pool is not a good idea at that time.

Relieve your stress and worries at the Mambukal Mountain Resort

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Fatima Turla | ファティマ | 파티마 (@lifeoffat_) on Jan 21, 2019 at 5:45am PST

One of the highlights of our Bacolod trip. Our trip to Mambukal Mountain Resort made us explore and appreciate more the beauty of nature. Here, you can find the popular Ishiwata Bath House and you can also try Kayaking, swimming in the resort’s private pool. My cousin enjoyed the hot spring so much. It was 40 degrees so I was only able to stay in the water for less than 15 minutes (lol, I know I’m weak). My cousin stayed for 30 minutes, took a break then went back in again. The hot spring literally cured our fatigue and we felt really fresh after. This is a must-try!

Inside the resort, we also tried Bacolod’s specialty which is the Inasal. It was absolutely good! I’ve tried Inasal a lot of times, but that one was the best! We stayed in Mambukal for the whole day.

Bacolod Travel Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

1. is bacolod a safe place to travel.

Definitely safe. During our stay in Bacolod, we always wander at night, exploring the plaza, visiting SM Bacolod on foot, buying street foods, and we didn’t feel threatened at all. We’re both women and we can say that the locals are really sweet and friendly. As I said, we didn’t plan our trip and we just relied on asking the locals, they are all willing to help us and give us tips and advice during our trip. They never fail to give us a bright smile whenever we asked for help. No wonder Bacolod was hailed as the City of Smiles. 🙂

2. When is the best time to visit?

We visited last January 2019. It was great since the weather is cold and not crowded at all. I remember when we were in Campuestohan, very few people were there. However, since it was cold, weren’t able to enjoy the pool. So I can say that between January to May is the best time to visit. March to May is the Philippines’ summer season so you’d totally enjoy your stay here during that time.

3. What language or dialect do they speak?

Hiligaynon or Ilonggo is the main language spoken in Bacolod, but most people can also speak and understand Tagalog. And of course, they can also communicate in English, you won’t have any problem traveling here.

PS. Their accent sounds so sweet that it’s really nice to hear. <3

4. Is it expensive?

For a DIY and unplanned trip, I can say that Bacolod is not an expensive place to travel to. I spent around PHP 10,000 ($200) for 4 days and 3 nights trip including accommodation, food, souvenirs, transportation, and other fees. Ferry and plane expenses are not yet included. We spent around PHP 3,000 ($60) for both ferry and plane tickets.

Please remember that you can spend less than PHP 10,000 in Bacolod. In our case, our flight ticket was not a promo ticket that’s why it’s a bit expensive (considering that it was really unplanned). You can buy a ticket for only PHP 1,000 if there’s a seat sale (watch out for that!). Also, our accommodation was a bit expensive too (my cousin was demanding regarding this matter! lol).

5. Where can we stay?

We stayed in Bacolod Pension Plaza. This place is really relaxing and worth it. The location is wonderful since the plaza is located just across the street. A few walks would bring you to the San Sebastian Cathedral and SM Bacolod. There are a lot of restaurants and fast food in the surrounding area. Public markets are also reachable on foot. And since it’s located in the Plaza, it serves as a good start in traveling to Bacolod’s popular tourist destinations.

Our accommodation costs PHP 1,200 ($23.87) per night . So a total of PHP 3,600 ($71.60) for 3 nights (no breakfast) . Our air-conditioned room was spacious, it has 2 single beds, a bathroom with hot shower, cabled tv, and wifi. You can also request for hot water for your coffee or instant noodles. Again, you can find cheaper accommodation if you want to, my cousin just wants a place with aircon and a hot shower, lol. It was also a bit expensive since we’re walk-in travelers.

Summary of our accommodation expense:

PHP 3,600 / 2 people = PHP 1,800 ($35.80) per person for 3 nights.

6. How to travel around Bacolod?

We usually use jeepney or bus to travel around. The tricycle is also good but it’s a bit pricey. When we went to Mambukal Mountain Resort, we rode a normal bus.

7. Any tips on how to save money for food?

In my case, I brought canned goods from Manila to Bacolod to save money. But of course, it was not enough, so we still bought some food in the supermarket like bread, instant noodles, and more canned products. For rice, we just buy rice at the carenderias near our accommodation which costs PHP 20.00 ($0.40) only. Sometimes, we also buy street foods. That’s for our breakfast and dinner, we usually eat out during lunch (since we’re on a trip at lunch). Overall, we just spent around PHP 700.00 ($13.92) for food.

Right beside the public plaza is the San Sebastian Cathedral, a late 19th-century church in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. The present church structure construction began on 27 April 1876. For Catholic travelers, visiting this church would be a good start for an adventure.

8:30-9:30 AM – BACOLOD GALLERY OF MASKS

From the Public Plaza, let’s go and visit the southern part of the city.

Bacolod City is home to the world-renowned Masskara Festival which is held every October of each year. However, in Bacolod City, you can find a gallery which houses and sells authentic Bacolod Masks. It would be interesting to include this destination in your Bacolod Tour Itinerary.

Right in front of San Sebastian Cathedral are jeepneys plying towards Bacolod – South. Take the jeepney plying “Punta Taytay”. Ask the driver to drop you at Bongbong’s right in front of Metrodome. Please take note that taking a taxi will make your city tour swift and more comfortable.

From Metrodome (your landmark ) just walk a few meters towards the east. The Gallery of Bacolod Masks can be found 3rd gate from Metrodome. There’s signage at the gate with a picture of a mask, so you will surely find the place. The gallery is open 8:30 AM and closes at 5 PM (Mondays to Saturdays), but you can always call and make some appointments. There are no entrance fees, but they are selling some souvenirs ranging from the small mask magnets to the big wearable masks. You need not buy, you can just simply visit and see them doing mask making. If you have more time they also offer a “paint your mask” activity for a price of  P150. You can then bring home a small sample of Bacolod Masks which you had painted.

From the Gallery of masks, go back to Bongbong’s and take another jeepney plying Punta Taytay . Ask the driver to drop you to the church. From that point, ask around where to find the Laguerta Glass Museum or simply take a trike to bring you to the place.

Owned and managed by Tomas Claridad Casiano, the Laguerta Vintage Glasses Museum houses a huge collection of different glasses of different sizes, shapes, and colors. The place does not accept walk-in guests. You need to call and make an appointment prior to your Bacolod Tour.

Tell the driver to drop you to May’s Organic Garden and Restaurant. If you want a tour in the garden, there is a charge of PHP 200. Riding a golf cart, you will see the beautiful garden as well as their organic farm. After the tour, you can have your organic meal at their restaurant.

12:00 – ONWARDS – OPTIONS OF VISITING MAMBUKAL OR CAMPUESTOHAN HIGHLAND RESORTS

If you would like to visit either Campuestohan or Mambukal, I suggest that you stay overnight at the place for you to fully enjoy the place and it would not be too tiring on your part. However, If you are renting a van for your Bacolod Tour, you can visit this place and go back to your hotel late in the afternoon.

Option 1. VISIT CAMPUESTOHAN

From May’s Organic Garden and Restaurant take a jeepney plying to Bacolod City ask the driver to drop you to the place nearest the public plaza. I suggest you take a taxi to go to Burgos Market as a jeepney will take more of your time.

From Burgos Market, take a jeep plying Alangilan. Any of these jeepneys will bring you to Campuestohan Highland Resort.

When going back to the city proper, tricycle outside the resort can bring you back to your hotel in Bacolod City.

Option 2. VISIT MAMBUKAL MOUNTAIN RESORT

From May’s Organic Garden and Resturant take a jeepney plying Bacolod City. Ask the driver to drop you at Bongbongs (where you came from earlier). From that place, take a jeepney to bring you to Libertad, or the fastest would be, take a pedicab (most of them are parking just beside Bongbongs) and ask them to bring you to Libertad Market at the terminal of Mambukal.

From Mambukal, Just take the jeepney parking outside the resort to bring you back to Bacolod City.

Now that you have rested, you will surely want to experience Dinner in Bacolod City. Bacolodnons are food lover and restaurants in Bacolod City are endless.

Coffee Shops are also available around the area should you wish to have your coffee after your dinner. For the young ones, the place is dotted with bars which you can hang out to enjoy the rest of the evening.

Bacolod City is generally peaceful, so be comfortable and enjoy your nightlife while having your vacation.

BACOLOD ITINERARY – DAY 2

8:00-8:30- GOING TO SILAY

Since you have already explored the southern part of Bacolod City, we can do a heritage tour on the second day of your visit to Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.

Silay City is known for its heritage houses and good food as well.

From your hotel take a taxi or jeepney to bring you to the South Terminal in Bata, Bacolod. From the terminal, take a jeepney going to Silay City and ask the driver to drop you to the Public Plaza.

8:30-9:30 – COFFEE AND VISIT TO SAN DIEGO PRO-CATHEDRAL

Right in front of the public plaza are typical old coffee shops (kapehan) selling nice coffee at very affordable prices. Silay is also known for their kakanin, so I’m sure these coffee shops have this kakanin. If you don’t like what they offer, you can walk a few meters to El Ideal, they open as early as 6:30 AM.

Within the area is the San Diego Pro-cathedral. If you are a Catholic you can pay a visit to this church.

Balay Negrense, one of the heritage houses in Silay City. This house is now a museum and is open for the public [ Bacolod Itinerary + Travel Guide | 3-Day Tour, Budget ]

9:30-11:00- SILAY CITY (HERITAGE TOUR)

After your church visit, drop by the Tourism Office (right in front of the City Hall) right within the plaza area and ask for guide maps for your walking tour.

Silay City is known as the Paris of Negros, wherein heritage houses owned by the sugar barons are still standing and well maintained. Some of these houses are open to the public while others are not. Of course it would be great to have a guide when doing a tour, however, if you are doing a DIY Tour, your map can already be a good help. If you are traveling alone, just hire a pedicab to bring you around. Of course, ask first for their price before hopping in.

11:00-12:00 MN -LUNCH AT BALARING

After the tour, you will surely want to feast on the food of Silay. So, I recommend that you visit  Barangay Balaring.

To reach the place, ask the pedicab driver to bring you to the tricycle terminal going to Balaring. Balaring offers a wide array of seafood through its various floating restaurants.

Must Read: EAT IN SILAY: BARANGAY BALARING

12:00 – 1:30 PM – COFFEE AT EL IDEAL

After your lunch, take a tricycle to bring you back to the city proper. Just try to negotiate with the driver to bring you straight to El Ideal.

El Ideal is one old Bakery in Silay City offering various delicacies that are popular among the tourists.

1:30-3:00 PM BACK TO BACOLOD, NEGROS SHOWROOM

Just outside the El Ideal, wait for a jeepney going to Bacolod. They will drop you somewhere in Bata. From that place, take another jeepney going to Libertad or Shopping. Any of these jeepneys will pass by Robinsons Place, Bacolod City.

At Robinson Place, you will find the Negros Showroom. The Negros Showroom showcases the best of Negros products. Various handicrafts ranging from furniture, decors, gifts and housewares, souvenirs and much more are found at the Showroom. Since this is already your second day, it would be best that you already buy some souvenirs or “pasalubong” for people back home.

After souvenir hunting, I’m sure you are already quite hungry. By this time so you can proceed to your next destination and have your coffee or taste various cakes and pastries famous in Bacolod City.

3 DAYS ITINERARY | BACOLOD CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL TRAVEL GUIDE

3:00-4:00 PM CAKE AND COFFEE AT CALEA, C’S OR FELICIAS

From Robinsons take a jeepney plying to Libertad. As the driver to drop you to L Fisher Hotel. Right in front of L Fisher, you will find the three big names in cakes and pastries in Bacolod City: Calea , Felicias, and C’s. Their cakes and pastries attract people not only in Bacolod but even guests from other places.

4:00 – 5:00 PM – CAPITOL LAGOON AND NEGROS MUSEUM

From any of these coffee shops take the jeepney going to Libertad. The jeepney will pass by the Capitol Lagoon. At the park, you will see the beautiful Provincial Capitol Building of Negros Occidental. I should say, this Provincial Capitol is one of the most beautiful structure of its kind in the country.

From the Provincial Capitol Lagoon, you can walk to the Negros Museum. Just ask anyone around for directions.

After your visit at the Negros Museum, I’m sure you are already quite tired and might want to go back to your hotel for a quick rest or to freshen up or might want to have your early dinner.

Chicken Inasal [ Bacolod Itinerary + Travel Guide | 3-Day Tour, Budget ]

5:00-ONWARDS -DINNER

For your Bacolod Tour dinner, since you are already near Lacson Street, you can pick from a variety of restaurants along the area. Since you have already tried some seafood at Balaring, you might want to try this time the Chicken Inasal of Bacolod.

The nearest chicken inasal restaurant from Negros Museum is the Chicken Deli. The Chicken Deli is right in front of the Seda Hotel – now being constructed. You might also want to try the Manokan country near SM City.

If you want to try the Manokan Country, take the jeepney in front of the Museum going to the downtown area. Just ask anyone from the museum what jeepney to take. The moment you reach the public plaza. You can walk to the Manokan Country (just beside SM City) wherein you will see a row of eateries all serving chicken inasal . I recommend you try the Lion’s Park Chicken Inasal because it is more spacious. It’s the first in the row of these eateries. Apart from chicken inasal, they also serve oysters.

Do you still have the extra energy? Or wanted to see more of Bacolod? At the back of SM City, is the Pope John Paul Tower. The tower is a seven-story building dedicated to the late Pope John Paul II who visited this capital city on the 20th of February 1981. At the topmost level of the tower, you will see a beautiful view of the city. So If you are not yet that hungry, it would be best to visit this place first before having your dinner as it might be too dark already when you visit quite late.

BACOLOD ITINERARY – DAY 3

VISIT THE RUINS, GOING HOME

As the schedule of your flight back home is unknown to me, I recommend that you spend the remaining few hours you have in buying what you want to bring home.

Going to the airport may take around 45 minutes depending on the traffic, so it would be safe to allow 1 hour for the travel time.

Before going to the airport, you can pass by the Ruins. The Ruins is one iconic structure in Negros Occidental. Technically, the Ruins is located in the

The Ruins is one iconic structure in Negros Occidental. Technically, the Ruins is located in the City of Talisay. The reason why I placed this attraction in the last of your itinerary – simply because there are no jeepneys plying this place.

To visit the place take a taxi going to the airport but ask the driver to drop you first at The Ruins (and wait for you). Just add 1 hour more for your travel time to the Airport. Since cabs charged a flat rate of P500 in going to the airport, it would be wise to negotiate first with the driver on the additional amount it would cost you for letting the cab wait while you are checking the Ruins.
