Best Cicchetti in Venice

Before I get your tastebuds too excited though, what even is cicchetti? Better yet, where are the best places to have aperitivo with cicchetti in Venice?

aperitivo venice italy

With this guide, I’m going to cover all your burning questions about cicchetti and share my advice as a local , to enjoy this culinary experience to the full.

This food guide aims to explain what are the famous Venetian snacks called cicchetti , where you can find (and eat) them in Venice and how to order them.

I suggest you read this fully comprehensive guide all the way until the end to learn my local’s tips to eat cicchetti and some tours with local guides you can join.

Tours can be great to learn about the tourist attractions in Venice and also some of the most loved Venetian food during your time here. Why? Because you’ll be accompanied by expert guide that knows Venice like the back of their hand.

What is Cicchetti?

The cicchetti (pronounced chi-ket-tee) are small savoury bites that Venetians use to eat for a quick lunch, aperitivo or in some occasions, instead of dinner .

best cicchetti venice

They are basically like the Spanish tapas , but prepared with local fresh ingredients. The word ‘cicchetti’ comes from the Venetian dialect and means ‘small quantity’. Cicchetti comes in different shapes and forms.

Let’s look at some of the most popular Cicchetti in Venice:

  • Crostini (like croutons) topped with cured meats, seasonal vegetables, seafood and fish and cheeses. The most famous cicchetto is the one topped with baccalà mantecato (creamy codfish).
  • Mozzarella in carrozza , fried mozzarella with anchovy or ham.
  • Polpette that are basically meat, fish or vegetarian balls.
  • Battered fried vegetables .
  • Schie and polenta (local lagoon shrimps on top of a slice of grilled polenta) or musetto and polenta (popular choice during winter).
  • Sarde in saor , fried sardines accompanied by an onion-based preparation.

The cicchetti are considered the best street food in Venice , because they’re prepared with fresh and seasonal ingredients, they only cost a couple of euros (between 2 and 4 euros each) and can be found everywhere around Venice.

best cicchetti venice

The best places to eat cicchetti are the bacari , small taverns with dim lighting, and just a few tables to accommodate customers.

Locals usually grab a couple of different types of cicchetti, ‘ombra de vin’ (glass of wine) or Venetian spritz and eat cicchetti outside , on the street.

As a visitor to the Veneto region, it’s important to know that the aperitivo with cicchetti and a glass of wine or spritz is a well-established custom in Venice.

For locals, it’s the preferred way to socialise at the bar , spend time with friends and family. Don’t be surprised if you can’t find a seat at the best bacaros in Venice .

Where to eat Cicchetti in Venice?

There are a lot of great places to eat cicchetti in Venice, and of course, there are taverns that offer higher quality cicchetti than others.

aperitivo bar venice

So below I have listed a selection of some of the most loved and/or personally tested bacari where you can eat some of the best cicchetti in Venice:

  • Al Mercà: is one of the most famous bacari in Venice and perfect to sample some cicchetti, strictly in the street! It’s not far from the Rialto market.
  • Cantina Do Mori: a real institution in Venice to try cicchetti and one of the oldest bacaro in Venice. It’s a few backstreets away from the Rialto bridge.
  • Bar All’Arco: try the cicchetti at this small bacaro serving some of the evergreens: crostini con baccalà mantecato and sarde in saor!
  • Rosticceria Gislon: this is not a bacaro like the others but a rotisserie and small restaurant. You can take a seat upstairs at the table or just downstairs where you can find a spot. With a wide selection of cold and hot foods, you can either try some Venetian dishes for an affordable price or try some cicchetti, which are quite nice!
  • Cantine del Vino già Schiavi: it’s a bacaro and wine cellar in the laid-back Dorsoduro neighbourhood, you can choose your preferred cicchetti from the bar counter and eat them accompanied by a glass of wine.
  • Osteria al Squero: this small bacaro has a good selection of cicchetti. My favourite ones, the crostini with artichoke or radicchio cream topped with local cheese and cured meats. The tavern is located just in front of the squero San Trovaso.
  • Al Timon: famous bacaro among university students, it gets quite busy after 5pm. Based in the Cannaregio district, not far from the Jewish Ghetto, this bacaro is an obligatory stop during your cicchetti tour of Venice.
  • Bacareto da Lele: one of the most famous bacaro among locals and tourists and one of the cheapest in town. Aperitivo time is quite busy and it’s not unusual to see a long queue outside. No worries, the service is super fast and you can grab a small glass of wine with a small panino and eat along the ‘fondamenta’, facing the canal.
  • Osteria dai Zemei: this bacaro is based in the San Polo district of Venice. You can sit outdoors on a sunny day and choose your cicchetti inside. You can get classic crostini with different toppings, meat or vegetarian polpette and mozzarella in carrozza.
  • Osteria dal Riccio Peoco: another affordable place to have aperitivo with cicchetti and Aperol Spritz in Campo Santi Apostoli. The special cicchetto here is the panino scrocchio, a salty croissant with butter, garlic flavoured and a special salame spread!

Just to remind you that Venetians can be seen eating cicchetti during anytime of the day. So feel free to join in, and if you’re really hungry, 6 or 8 should do the trick.

Venice Cicchetti map

Below I have added a practical map of Venice with the bacari mentioned above:

You can save the map to your phone or even print it. That way you can use it as a guide while you are exploring Venice. If you happen to be visiting Venice in winter or you arrive on a wet day, don’t let that deter you from finding the best cicchetti bars.

Cicchetti in Venice

I’m a regular at bacari in Venice and after a day of exploring new corners of the city, I love the custom of going to eat some fresh cicchetti accompanied by a Spritz!

best venice cicchetti

These are my tips for eating the best cicchetti in Venice:

  • Eat cicchetti with the Spritz Select, the original Venetian Spritz! I only tried this version recently and I’ll definitely order it again. If you like the bitter taste of the Spritz Campari, go for the Select version.
  • Order cicchetti prepared with seasonal ingredients . For example, in winter, order a cicchetto with a mushroom or radicchio cream. During summer, with cherry tomatoes, peppers and aubergines or courgettes. This way, there’s a much higher chance that you’ll eat high quality cicchetto .
  • Enjoy cicchetti standing or sitting outside the bacaro . Accompany them with an alcoholic drink like the classic Aperol Spritz (or one of its variations) or an ‘ombra’ (in Venetian dialect, a small glass) of red or white wine.
  • Why try cicchetti in one bacaro? Especially when there are several places where you can get different ones, and all around Venice? ‘ Andar per bacari ’ literally means to wander from one bacaro to the other and it’s a typical Venetian costume. Identify a couple of bacari or just pick them along the way, and grab a drink and some cicchetti in each.

How to order Cicchetti in Venice

Now that you know what cicchetti are and have a list of bacari to try out, it’s time to look closer at how locals order cicchetti (and how you should do it too!).

cicchetti bar venice

  • 1. Pop in the bacaro you’ve chosen and check out the selection of cicchetti that you can see from the window of the bar counter. Cicchetti are usually cold snacks, so you’ll be given the one you want there and then. Every bacaro has different small bites, but there are some classic cicchetti you can try if you’re undecided: crostini con baccalà mantecato, sarde in saor and mozzarelle in carrozza . You should always be able to find meat, fish or seafood based cicchetti as well as vegetarian and vegan options .
  • 2. Once you know the cicchetti you want you can either give a go to your Italian and order by reading the label (if there’s one) or just point at the cicchetto you want . Normally bartenders and waiters understand English, no worries! I usually recommend getting an Italian Phrasebook & Dictionary to learn how to order food, ask for directions and much more in Italian.
  • 3. Along with cicchetti, remember to order a drink . You can either have a glass of red or white house wine, a Prosecco wine glass or Spritz. In Venice, you can try different Spritz. If you don’t or can’t drink alcohol, you’re in the wrong place! No, seriously, there are other options. Try the gingerino or crodino for example. They’re both Italian non-alcoholic aperitivo that you can find more or less in every bar.
  • 4. Carry with you cash to pay . You should be able to pay by card in most places but the most traditional bacari only accept cash.
  • 5. Take a seat at the table indoor or outdoor . Locals like having their cicchetti and drink outside, standing whilst chatting so you might want to experience the same to blend in and feel like a local.

Curiosity: why do we say “drinking a shadow of wine” in Venetian?

In Venice you will often hear the expression “Andémo béver un ombra” . For Venetians, the ombra (‘shadow’) indicates the glass of wine and the word refers to the ancient distribution of this in Venice. The wine vendor positioned himself in the shadow of the bell tower of San Marco so that it always remained cool, away from the sun’s rays.

A great amount of white wines is produced in the Veneto Region. This type of wine goes perfectly with fish based dishes like creamed salt cod served on toasted bread, marinated anchovies and the legendary sardines in saor . Even with raw fish it is perfect! There is no shortage of red wines either! These can be enjoyed together with the typical Venetian liver, accompanied by polenta. In short, you just have to try the many local varieties!

Where To Eat the Best Cicchetti in Venice—By People Who Know

Brandon Shaw Last Updated: December 8, 2022

Venice is one of the most unique destinations on Earth, and it’s both supported and plagued by tourism. The best way to try authentic specialties in the Floating City is by heading to a local bar and ordering a plateful of Venetian cicchetti. With that in mind, here’s our list of the best local cicchetti bars in Venice according people who know.

Pro Tip: Planning your trip to Venice? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. See our  guide to Venice  for more planning resources and our  top Venice food tours  for an easy way to eat the best food in the city.

What Are Venetian Cicchetti?

the roman guy venice food tour

If you’ve been to Venice before but haven’t tried cicchetti and an ombra at a local bacaro , you’ll need to go back. Venetian cicchetti are local finger foods, served as the main elements of every authentic happy hour or social gathering.

They’re served at bacari , the local bars in the Lagoon, alongside a glass of red or white wine, called an ombra (shadow). It’s more of a casual dining experience than a true restaurant, but sometimes that’s better—especially in Venice. If that’s what you’re after, check out the best Venetian sit-down restuarants .

Most bacari serve an assortment of fried fish (like calamari and sardines), mixed vegetables (called frittura mista), and traditional Venetian dishes made with local fish, meats, and cheeses.

For an optimal Venetian experience, start your tasting early in the evening — or even at lunchtime. Bacari are usually tiny, so this way you’ll avoid crowds and find seating. Besides, day drinking in Venice is perfectly acceptable. You’ll see locals enjoying a glass with cicchetti even in the mid-afternoon. Now, let’s move on to where to eat the best cicchetti in Venice!

Top Cicchetti Bars in Venice

I have thought long and hard about what makes these the best or not. You may say, “the ones that taste the best, right?” Yeah…no. Eating the best cicchetti on Earth in Ohio doesn’t really compare to eating average ones on a Venetian canal.

Sorry Ohio, but the same things go for Venice. Some places have great cicchetti, but you have to eat them standing up on a busy street. For me, the best is a combination of these three things: High-quality ingredients, great scenery, and friendly staff. Here are my picks for the best places to eat cicchetti in Venice.

€€ | Aperitivo | Steakhouse

Located in the beautiful Cannaregio area, Al Timon is a favorite among students and young people in Venice. In the warmer months, you can sit on a traditional wooden boat outside and enjoy a drink while floating on the water. On a nice evening, this is my favorite place to be in all of Venice.

The specialties there include grilled polenta bites with fried fish and freshly toasted bread topped with Italian goat cheese and berry compote.

The last time I was there, I had a nice long chat with the owner who is extremely passionate about food. We talked about how it’s produced and the looks on people’s faces when they eat it! They actually have really nice cuts of meat here too if you want to extend your aperitivo to a full dinner.

€€ | Great Atmosphere | Very Local

I would say that this bacaro has it all. You can come in just for a drink, so it’s a bar. You can come in and have some cicchetti, so it’s a bacaro. They also have a separate room as a restaurant for dining, so you get the best of all three worlds and you can choose!

The history of the establishment goes back well over 100 years under different names. The current bar has been around for around 30 years and is a hot spot with locals. Take your pick if you want to just have a snack or dine in. Either way, you’ll be happy you did.

Cantina do Spade

€-€€ | Local | A Bit of Everything

This is one of the historical osterie in Venice, which supposedly dates back to the 1400s. I happened to pop into this place not too long ago and have to admit that I had a great time! It’s very popular with locals and tourists alike, so you might not find a seat right away. You can always sit outside or plop your food on one of the barrels.

For food, you can opt for their delicious array of cichetti and wash them down with an Aperol Spritz. If you’re really hungry, they also make pasta dishes like gnocchi and Venetian specials like Bigoli in salsa or spaghetti al Nero di Seppia.

€€€ | Chic | Huge Wine Selection

This is the number one spot for the absolute top-quality cicchetti and wine in Venice. Right by Rialto Bridge, it’s the chicest osteria (wine bar) in the lagoon, with over 875 bottles to choose from. Try one of their bite-sized panini called meraveje (“marvel” in Venetian dialect), stuffed with ham and truffle sauce.

This is a historic structure in Dorsoduro. There’s no place to sit, so you have to eat and drink standing. While this might seem strange, it’s the custom so why buck the trend?

You won’t find anything fancy. What they serve are glasses of wine and cicchetti finger food. You can find many seafood and vegetarian options. Be a local and check this place out.

All’Arco

€ | Small and Cozy | Outdoor Seating

All’Arco is one of the tiniest cicchetti bars in Venice, but it also offers outside seating. It’s great for people-watching during the warmer months.

It’s a family-run business and all the goodies are handmade with care every day. Try their veggie-based cicchetti for €2 each, as the fresh produce comes in from a nearby market every day.

Cantina Do Mori

€ | Local hangout | Authentic

Many say that Cantina Do Mori is the oldest bacaro in Venice, with its old-fashioned atmosphere and huge wooden wine jugs. Some would say that this kind of bacaro is dying out, but I personally feel that there are still plenty of great ones and we have been adding them to our lists around the city.

Their specialty is called francobollo. It consists of a tiny square sandwich made with soft bread and stuffed with crab meat, shrimp, or fresh meat cuts for just €1 each! Service is friendly and brisk. The cichetti are delicious and the wine is high quality. What else do you need?

Call it fried cicchetti paradise, starting from €2 each. The portions are abundant and a choice of main courses is available for lunch and dinner. For a local experience, order cicchetti al banco (at the counter). If you prefer sitting, remember to ask about the extra service fee!

€ | Local | Just Snacks or Full Meal

Located in Campo Santa Margherita, this is a favorite with locals and tourists alike. Expect it to be busy and you might have to wait for a table, but order a glass of Prosecco, it’s worth the wait.

The menu itself is quite small. You won’t find all the typical cicchetti but you will find a delicious tagliere full of prosciutto, mortadella, porchetta, and other fresh meat cuts available. You can also sit down for a full meal here.

My Favorite Cicchetti In Venice – The 10 Best Bacari To Try in 2024

Last updated on March 17th, 2024

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Venice? Canals. Water. Anything else? If you love food as much as I do then you are thinking… cicchetti!

I have been eating cicchetti in Venice ever since I came to live in Italy back in 2012, giving me plenty of first hand experience in terms of bacari to visit, the best cicchetti to try, and what to drink with them.

In this article, I’ll fill you in on:

  • What cicchetti are
  • Typical cicchetti in Venice
  • What to drink with cicchetti
  • Where to eat cicchetti Venice (best bacari )

Jump to Section

What Are Cicchetti?

Display of cicchetti in Venice behind glass and on shelves.

Cicchetti ( pronounced cheek-keht-tee in Italian) , sometimes seen written as cichetti or cicheti in the local Venetian dialact, are small snacks or bites that are typically served in bacari in Venice.

The formula for eating cicchetti is straight forward:

A small bite + A small sip

Eating cicchetti is traditionally a quick thing, done standing with a small glass of either local white wine (oftentimes very cheap) or even a small spritz .

Man peeks out from behind bar, overhanging wine glasses, and glass display cases of cicchetti in Venice, Italy.

Fact: Bacari are cicchetti bars or small restaurants specializing in serving cicchetti. To learn more, read What is a Bacaro?

For foreigners, it’s sometimes helpful to look at cicchetti as a type of finger food, because they are eaten with your hands!

Popular Cicchetti In Venice

These are the most popular type of cicchetti to try on your next trip to Venice:

  • Baccalà mantecato (pronounced bahk-kah-lah mahn-teh-cah-toh in Italian): a creamy puree of salt cod served on small rounds of toasted bread or crispy pieces of polenta.
  • Polpette di pesce (pronounced pohl-peht-teh dee peh-sheh in Italian): these are small, deep fried fish balls served with various sauces.
  • Sarde in saor (pronounced sahr-deh in sow-oor in Italian): local sardines are fried in oil and flavored with raisins, pine nuts and white wine vinegar. It makes for the perfect salty, sour, sweet combination.
  • Spiedino di frittura (pronounced spee-eh-dee-noh dee freet-toor-ah in Italian): a selection of local fried fish on a skewer.
  • Crostino con salmone affumicato (pronounced croh-stee-noh cohn sahl-moh-neh ahf-foo-mee-cah-toh in Italian): a small piece of toasted white bread spread with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Perhaps not too exciting but very common nonetheless.
  • Polpette Veneziane (pronounced pohl-peht-teh veh-neh-zee-ah-neh in Italian): deep fried beef meatballs. Venice is well known for these little guys so don’t miss them!
  • Bruschetta con pomodoro e basilico (pronounced broo-skeht-tah cohn pohm-oh-dohr-oh eh bah-see-lee-coh in Italian): your classic toasted slice of bread piled high with vine ripe tomatoes, fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil .
  • Bruschetta con gorgonzola e noci (pronounced broo-skeht-tah cohn pohm-oh-dohr-oh eh noh-chee in Italian): toasted bread with gorgonzola cheese and walnuts, sometimes with a drizzle of honey to balance it all out.
  • Affettati (pronounced ahf-feht-tah-tee in Italian): various local cured meats such as prosciutto , mortadella , sporessa and coppa or other sausages . Sometimes served on a slice of bread, other times you will see it just served with a toothpick.
  • Tortino (pronounced tohr-tee-noh in Italian): a small, savory pie, made with or without meat.
  • Scampo crudo (pronounced scahm-poh kroo-doh in Italian): a raw scampi served with a wedge of lemon and a bit of freshly ground black pepper.

Other common cicchetti include:

  • Small open-faced sandwiches
  • Scallops on half shell
  • A small piece of fish or boiled octopus
  • A square of polenta topped with sauce

Quick Guide To Cicchetti Venice

*What to drink is based on what I notice the vibe is of that particular bacaro , what they are best at and what most people are ordering. This is just my suggestion but you can order whatever you like!

Coffee Break: If you need a little caffeine to wake you up, stop in at Caffè Del Doge on your way to Acqua E Mais, one of the best spots in Venice for coffee .

Acqua E Mais

Campiello dei Meloni, 1411/1412, 30125 Venezia VE

Open: Daily

Acqua E Mais is not only one of the best places to pick up takeout and eat some of the best street food but only one of my top picks for casual cicchetti on the street.

Acqua E Mais is a hole in the wall so plan on ordering your wine and cicchetti to enjoy standing. They also make some of the best fried fish served in a large paper cone in all of Venice.

You will find traditional Venetian cicchetti options such as seafood skewers and crostini toasts loaded with traditional toppings like smoked salmon and baccalà mantecato.

Osteria Bancogiro

Campo San Giacometto, Ponte di Rialto

Closed: Monday

Osteria Bancogiro has always been my favorite place for cicchetti in Venice for several reasons. The first is the location just off the Rialto Bridge in a cute square with tables spilling out on the backside onto Campo Erberia (one of the best places in Venice for after-dinner drinks ).

Inside a restaurant in Venice. Glass display of cicchetti, glasses hanging from ceiling, and people working behind the counter.

The cicchetti they serve are more chic and plated with a modern touch. Choose from a selection of raw fish including scampi and oysters or choose from their wide selection of made-to-order cicchetti on their polenta or bread. They are most famed for their curried shrimp salad but I think their baccalà mantecato is some of the best in Venice.

Eat your cicchetti standing indoors or outdoors or ask if they have a table on their terrace outside to sit down at. You can also eat a full dinner at Osteria Bancogiro, making it a one-stop hang out for the evening.

Start with cicchetti standing, move to your table (pre-booking recommended) and then hang out in Campo Erberia after dinner , literally right on the Grand Canal.

Bacarando Corte dell’Orso

Sestiere di S. Marco, 5495, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy

Bacarando Corte dell’Orso is my suggestion if you are a family looking to sit down for cicchetti or looking to make a whole meal out of it.

They have one of the largest selections of cicchetti in all of Venice , all of which are reliable and affordable. Choose from smaller bites such as polenta with scampi or a whole savory quiche or tortino .

Order at the counter and bring your cicchetti to one of the large wooden tables in the next room. The indoor seating space is big enough to accommodate larger families as well as smaller parties.

Even if you aren’t traveling to Venice as a family, Bacarando Corte dell’Orso is famous for having one of the best variety of cicchetti at any given time. You can also drink your spritz and enjoy your cicchetti standing at the counter or outside on the benches.

Bar All’Arco

People sit at small tables and eat cicchetti and drink wine at All'Arco in Venice, Italy.

S. Polo, 436, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy

Closed: Wednesday

Bar All’Arco is arguably the most famous bacaro in Venice serving up some of the most traditional cicchetti to Venetian locals.

Because All’Arco has made such a name for itself, you will certainly notice all the tourists as well but fortunately, the bar hasn’t changed a bit over the decades.

Glass display case of cicchetti at a bacaro in Venice.

The selection of cicchetti is traditional and limited and if you happen to pop in at a busy moment, you may have to wait a minute or two for their staff to refill the cicchetti platters.

If you can manage, grab one of the few tables outdoors, lined up against both sides of the bar. It’s not easy though! Every time I have been, I haven’t been lucky enough to grab a table. Instead, I eat my cicchetti standing at the window.

All’Arco is most famous for their crostini with various toppings. After tasting numerous cicchetti throughout Venice, I think All’Arco makes the absolute best crostini cicchetti because they are made with thin slices of baguette, sliced on an angle and toasted, keeping the cicchetti crunchy, even as it sits on display.

Hand holds bread with fish spread in Venice, Italy.

All’Arco is particularly famed for their soft shell crab, when in season. Unfortunately, I have never been lucky enough to visit at the right time but if you see them (only for a couple of weeks in the spring and fall), order it!

The prices are also some of the best in the city. Each cicchetto only costs a couple euros, unlike other bacari , which serve many more options but at higher prices.

Cantina Do Spade

San Polo, 859, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy

Open: Everyday

Cantina Do Spade is an excellent choice for cicchetti if you like fried nibbles. They have the most famous fried meatballs, from which there is always a wide selection including fish, vegetarian and beef.

Fried cicchetti in a glass display case at Cantina do Spade in Venice, Italy. Two women are behind the bar working.

Cantina Do Spade is located in a small street, tucked away behind the Rialto Bridge, catering to locals and tourists alike. If you are lucky enough to get one of the three tables designated to having your aperitivo and eating cicchetti indoors, you are one of the lucky few! If not, eat your cicchetti standing at the bar (but quickly – it’s small in there) or outside on the bench for a more leisurely experience.

Unlike other traditional Venetian bacari , Cantina Do Spade is one of the few places who serve cicchetti as they once were – with just a tiny sip of wine. Order un bicchierino di vino , which is literally a baby glass of wine, just a couple of sips.

White plate with fried meatball on a table and small glass of white wine on left.

When I am treating myself to a day of cicchetti or indulging in a bacaro tour (hitting up several cicchetti bars to eat and drink in one evening), I appreciate the small glass. I would never make it through the evening if I was always given a full 6 oz glass of wine.

Good To Know: Cantina Do Spade also has a very good restaurant serving up Venetian classics . Their pasta with shellfish is particularly delicious .

Cantina del Vino già Schiavi

Woman looks in window at Cantine del Vino gia Schiavi in Venice, Italy.

Fondamenta Nani, 992, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy

Closed: Sunday

Cantina del Vino già Schiavi has become one of the most famous bacari in Venice if you want to sample a wide selection of wines and cicchetti at a good price AND dangle your feet over the edge of the canal. They are most well known for their wide selection of crostini cicchetti but you will also find less common items such as thick slices of salami on a toothpick or a square of hard cheese.

Shelves of platters of cicchetti behind a glass display in Venice, Italy.

You know all those pictures you see of people eating their cicchetti along the canal in Venice? It’s most likely here. Cantina del Vino già Schiavi is larger than other bacari in Venice but it’s so popular that many people ask for a paper plate and eat outside.

I suggest coming here if that is what you are looking for. If you have a good day at hand, this is where you want to be.

Small plate with three cicchetti on a marble counter with glass of white wine.

Good To Know: Cantina means winery in Italian and apart from being a bacaro, Cantina del Vino già Schiavi also has a great selection of wines for purchase to bring home as gifts of souvenirs .

Panini e Vini Da Babbo

Sestiere Dorsoduro, 3059, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy

Everyday 7:00 am – 11:00 pm

Panino e Vino Da Babbo is a really great place to enjoy cicchetti sitting down outdoors in the beautiful Santa Margherita Square (one of my favorite squares to eat and drink with kids in Venice ) in the Dorsoduro neighborhood in Venice.

Panini e Vino Da Babbo is my top pick for eating cicchetti in Venice if you are with kids. There is ample outdoor seating that opens up onto the square, allowing kids to run freely without the danger of the canal right there.

Apart from the ideal location, it’s also casual and easy going, furnished with wooden tables and staffed with very friendly locals.

Woman walks past wooden table with cutting board and two cicchetti in Venice, Italy.

Enjoy classics such as crostini with sardines, smoked salmon, cured meats and cheese.

Good To Know: Just around the corner is some of the best pizza in Venice at Pizza a Volo and a great, casual restaurant, perfect for kids , Osteria alla Bifora.

People sitting to left of entrance of 'Al Merca' baccaro in Venice, Italy.

Campo Bella Vienna, 213, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy

I suggest Al Mercà for those of you who are looking for a little sandwich and want to hang out with the locals. Al Mercà is located right next to the Rialto Market, catering primarily to locals working the market, fishermen and Venetian butchers lining the surrounding streets.

Al Mercà is literally a window on the street with one small bench. Order your two-bite sandwich made with things like salami or fish salad and eat it standing in the square.

Wooden and glass display case of cicchetti in Venice, Italy. Wine bottles on back wall and handwritten signs on wall.

This is a great place to grab a snack if you are in a rush, as most others are as well. Patrons here are quick to trot, ordering just one or two items and they are off.

I noticed several locals hanging out and chatting over a small glass but for the most part, it was a quick bite and quick sip, par cicchetti tradition.

Inside the modern Sepa in Venice, Italy. Glass counter with cicchetti displayed and people working behind in the kitchen.

Calle de la Bissa, 5482, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy

SEPA is one of the best places to get cicchetti right off the Rialto market if you are looking for a more modern option and formula.

SEPA specializes in making excellent takeout food , fast lunch options and non-traditional cicchetti, best enjoyed standing at the window.

Not unlike other bacari in Venice, there are no sitting options. Instead, the walls are lined with chest high counters where you can take your cicchetti and wine. Choose from a selection of local white and red wines served in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 bottles or whole bottles, filled on tap to order in their back room.

Bottle of wine and paper plate with cicchetti on table at a bar in Venice, Italy.

Although not traditional, instead of white wine, order a beer here with your cicchetti. SEPA has one of the largest selections of craft beers to choose from.

Souvenirs From Venice: SEPA also has a small selection of their packaged cicchetti spreads to bring home as a gift or souvenir .

Favorites include fried meatballs, savory quiches, seafood skewers and marinated local radicchio served on polenta or toasted bread.

If you are traveling with small children, I don’t recommend SEPA for cicchetti because they don’t have seating. Instead, read Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Venice or go to Bacarando  Corte dell’Orso.

Good To Know: Located just around the corner is L’Osteria di Santa Marina and Suso for some of the best gelato in Venice .

Osteria Al Portego

Woman with a glass of wine in front of entrance to Al Portego in Venice, Italy in the evening. Stickers and signs fill the windows.

Calle de la Malvasia, 6014, 30122 Venezia VE, Italy

Osteria Al Portego is my top pick for students looking for a cool hang out in the center of Venice not far from the Rialto Bridge.

Osteria Al Portego prices are affordable, the atmosphere is casual and the cicchetti selection is reliable.

I particularly recommend this hang out in warmer weather. There is no space to sit down indoors, just a small corner to rest your glass for a moment. The wooden tables are reserved for patrons who want to eat a full meal.

Close up of cicchetti with loads of toppings behind a glass display in Venice, Italy.

Instead, order your aperitivo and head outdoors to one of the few stools or stand among the locals in the small piazza.

Osteria Al Portego is not only one of my favorite places for cicchetti and drinks before dinner but also a student hang out post-dinner.

Best Cicchetti in Venice: A Culinary Journey Through the City of Canals

Cicchetti, Venice’s answer to Spanish tapas, are small, delectable dishes typically served at traditional Venetian cicchetti bars, known as bacari. These little bites are perfect for enjoying with a glass of wine, a spritz, or even on their own as you hop from one bacaro to another, exploring the city’s culinary scene.

The History of Cicchetti in Venice

The cultural significance of eating cicchetti, top 5 types of venetian cicchetti, 1. baccalà mantecato, 2. sarde in saor, 3. polpette, 4. tramezzini, 5. bruschetta, top 5 cicchetti bars (bacari) in venice, 1. cantina do mori (san polo), signature dishes, 2. al merca (san polo).

  • 3. All'Arco (San Polo)

4. Osteria Ai Promessi Sposi (Cannaregio)

5. la cantina (cannaregio), what about the other cicchetti bars, cicchetti etiquette, food tours in venice: discovering the best cicchetti, venetian cicchetti and wine bar tour, related posts.

Cicchetti’s rich history dates back to the 15th century when Venice was a major trading hub. The concept of these small dishes originated from the need to provide quick, affordable, and filling meals for the merchants, sailors, and other workers who frequented the city’s taverns between shifts. Thus, famous street food was born.

Today, cicchetti has become an integral part of Venetian culture, offering a unique opportunity to taste the region’s diverse culinary offerings. From traditional seafood dishes to contemporary twists on classic recipes, there’s a cicchetto for every palate. Sharing cicchetti with friends and family over a small glass of red or white wine allows locals and tourists alike to connect with the city’s rich history and culinary traditions.

As you venture into the world of Venetian cicchetti, you’ll quickly discover the myriad of flavors and textures that these bite-sized morsels offer. Here, we dive headfirst into five of the most common and beloved cicchetti types. With each bite, you’ll immerse yourself in Venice’s culinary soul.

Baccalà Mantecato

The star of Venetian cicchetti, baccalà mantecato is a creamy, whipped salted cod spread that has been re-hydrated, poached, and then expertly mixed with olive oil, garlic, and sometimes a touch of milk or cream.

Slathered atop a slice of crusty bread, this cicchetto is a perfect symphony of flavors – the rich, garlicky, and velvety creaminess beautifully balances the salty, savory cod. It’s an irresistible combination that keeps you coming back for more.

Sarde in Saor

Sarde in saor is an exquisite marriage of sweet and sour flavors that pays homage to Venice’s maritime heritage. Fresh, tender sardines are fried and then marinated in a mixture of slow-cooked onions, vinegar, raisins, and pine nuts.

The result is a beautifully layered dish that dances on your taste buds – the sweetness of the onions and raisins contrasting against the tangy vinegar, with the nuttiness of the pine nuts adding depth and the sardines providing a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Polpette in a pot

Venetian polpette are not your average meatballs. These little spheres of joy are made from a blend of ground meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and herbs, then shallow-fried to crispy perfection.

What sets them apart is the absence of tomato sauce, which allows the meat and cheese flavors to shine through, leaving you with a delectable, savory treat that’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

For the adventurous, you’ll also find variations like spicy polpette or ones made with fish or vegetables.

Tramezzini on a cutting board

These delicate triangular sandwiches are the elegant Venetian version of a humble sandwich. Made with soft, crustless white bread, tramezzini are filled with an array of ingredients that showcase the region’s finest produce.

Sink your teeth into a combination of creamy tuna and artichoke, savor the earthy flavors of mushroom and truffle, or indulge in the simple luxury of prosciutto and mozzarella. With each bite, you’ll be transported to a world of simple yet refined flavors encapsulating Venetian cuisine’s essence.

Venetian Bruschetta on a plate

Though bruschetta may be a staple across Italy, Venice has its unique spin on this classic dish. Crispy slices of toasted bread are topped with a generous layer of fresh, ripe tomatoes, chopped basil, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

The Venetian twist comes with the addition of regional ingredients like marinated seafood or creamy spreads made from local cheese. The result is an explosion of fresh, vibrant flavors and contrasting textures that make this typical cicchetti an essential part of any Venetian experience.

There are likely hundreds of local cicchetti bars in Venice, and I admit that I haven’t been to all or even half of them. However, I’ve been to many wine bars throughout my Venetian journey, and these are some of my favorites.

Chances are you’ll love at least one wine bar on this list and some local finger foods. So go out there and try a few types of cicchetti and let us know you’re favorite!

Cantina do Mori in Venice

Specialty: Francobollo Ambiance: Historic Address: Calle Do Mori, 429, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy

Cantina Do Mori, one of the oldest bacari in Venice, has been serving delicious cicchetti since 1462. Nestled in the heart of the Rialto Market, and near the Rialto Bridge, this historic establishment offers a wide variety of mouthwatering bites.

Some of the must-try cicchetti at Cantina Do Mori include the baccalà mantecato (creamed cod spread on toasted bread), polpette (meatballs), and marinated sardines with onions. Cantina Do Mori is famous for its francobollo, a small sandwich filled with ingredients like cured meats, cheese, and marinated vegetables.

The cozy atmosphere, with its copper pots and pans hanging from the ceiling, exudes an authentic, old-world charm that transports visitors back in time. Keep in mind that they do not offer tables or seating. Simply order cicchetti and enjoy an aperol spritz amongst the locals.

Al Merca

Specialty: Cheese and Salumi Ambiance: Bustling Address: Campo Bella Vienna, 213, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy

Al Merca, located just steps away from the bustling Rialto Market, is a small, standing-room-only bacaro that’s become a local favorite.

I recommend their delicious crostini (toasted bread with various toppings). Don’t miss out on the gorgonzola and walnut, or the salami and soft cheese options. Another must-try is their tramezzini, delicate triangular sandwiches filled with assorted ingredients like tuna, artichoke, and prosciutto.

Al Merca’s friendly atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for a quick bite and a refreshing glass of wine as you chat with locals and other travelers. Don’t forget to bring cash, though, as they didn’t accept credit cards the last time I was there.

bar all'arco

3. All’Arco (San Polo)

Specialty: Seafood Ambiance: Intimate Address: S. Polo, 436, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy

Just a short walk from the Rialto Bridge, All’Arco not only offers some of the best cicchetti in the San Polo district, this family-owned bacaro serves up top-notch Venice cicchetti regardless of neighborhood.

Renowned for their seafood offerings, All’Arco’s specialties include sarde in saor (sweet and sour sardines), seppie al nero (squid cooked in its ink), and baccalà mantecato. Their seasonal selections, like the luscious fig and prosciutto crostini, are also worth trying. While they don’t always have it, try ordering their fried meatballs. They’re some of the best-fried cicchetti in Venice.

All’Arco’s warm, friendly ambiance and delicious food make it an ideal spot for a cicchetti crawl.

Osteria Ai Promessi Sposi

La Cantina

Specialty: Seafood Cicchetti Ambiance: Contemporary Address: Calle dell’Oca, 4367, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy

Situated in the Cannaregio district , La Cantina is a contemporary bacaro that puts a modern spin on traditional cicchetti.

Their creative menu includes dishes like the octopus and potato salad, duck salami, and marinated anchovies. For a truly unique experience, try their inventive wine pairings, which perfectly complement each cicchetto.

La Cantina’s stylish interior, combined with their innovative approach to cicchetti, make it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts.

While the list doesn’t encompass local cicchetti bars in the charming districts of San Marco, Santa Croce, Dorsoduro, or Castello, rest assured that these areas remain home to delectable cuisine.

As a foodie, I’ve discovered my favorite dishes in various nooks and crannies of the city. Maybe your version of the best cicchetti in Venice isn’t on the list.

When visiting cicchetti bars, it’s really fun and respectful to embrace the local etiquette and eat like a native Venetian.

These little plates are typically consumed standing up, allowing for a more social experience.

It’s common to hop from one bacaro to another, sampling various dishes along the way. So don’t feel obligated to order cicchetti from the same place the whole night.

Remember to be adventurous and try a variety of traditional cicchetti– as it’s the best way to appreciate Venice’s diverse dishes.

5 Best Cicchetti Bars in Venice

Pinterest image: photo of pizza with caption reading

Move over tapas! Venice cicchetti bars serve big flavors on small plates plus glasses of wine and other potent potables at affordable prices. Discover our picks for the cicchetti in Venice that you shouldn’t miss.

Cicchetti and Spritz at Al Merca in Venice

Spanning the gap between upscale restaurants and cheap eats, Venice cicchetti bars are having a moment.

Despite this trendiness, cicchetti in Venice is not a new concept. Venetians have enjoyed finger foods and small plate snacks at wine bars known as bacari for decades if not centuries. It’s a key part of the Venetian lifestyle and it’s one of the reasons why we consider Venice to be one of the great Italian food cities .

What Are Cicchetti in Venice?

As we first found out in Verona and then experienced throughout Venice, cicchetti bars serve little plates of inexpensive food (i.e. cicchetti ) in addition to wine, prosecco and the occasional Aperol Spritz.

The concept is informal, simple and wonderful – a marvelous way to pass the time in between romantic boat jaunts on Venice’s network of canals and intimate, romantic afternoon strolls through the city’s narrow, maze-like alleys.

Cicchetti at Cantina Do Spade in Venice

In many ways, cicchetti in Venice is similar to tapas in Madrid. But the Venetian version features Italian bar classics like crispy polpetta (meatballs), miniature sandwiches ( tramezzini , crostini and panini ) and all kinds of fried and roasted seafood.

Eating cicchetti in Venice doesn’t require reservations or a lot of money. Each cicchetti item is typically value-priced at just a couple euros, give or take, with a handful of dishes adding up to a meal. Some people consicer cicchetti to be the best cheap eats in Venice and we don’t disagree.

Tour Tip Food travelers with just a day or two in Venice can get a bang for the buck by taking a three-hour Venice Food Tour chock-filled with cicchetti bars, a Rialto Market visit and a gondola ride.

How to Order Cicchetti in Venice

Server at Bar All Arco in Venice

Don’t be shy when ordering cicchetti at Venice bars. Instead, gently push you way to the counter and select little plates of seafood, tiny sandwiches and other nibbles. Just point if you don’t feel comfortable ordering in Italian or if you can’t quickly translate the menu.

Once you choose a selection of snacks, you’ll want to order an ombra , the local vernacular for a glass of local wine. Specify if you want rosso (red) or bianco (white). If you’re not in the mood for wine, you can always order an Aperol Spritz or Negroni .

Where to Experience Cicchetti in Venice

Quaint Venice Canal

As curious food travelers, we devoted a good bit of time hunting for the best cicchetti in Venice when we weren’t eating at the city’s best restaurants and gelaterias . We visited some bars in the morning when the wine flowed along with coffee and others in the late afternoon when crowds jammed tiny baccaro spaces.

Based on our self-guided Venice cicchetti crawl, these are our five favorite spots to enjoy Venetian cicchetti:

1. Osteria all’Arco

Crowd at Bar All Arco in Venice

Osteria all’Arco stands out as the first cicchetti bar we visited in Venice. This classic cicchetti bar specializes in simple crostinis topped with local favorites including baccalà mantecato (codfish mousse), acciughe (anchovies) and porchetta (stuffed pork roast).

Cicchetti at Bar All Arco in Venice

Options at Osteria all’Arco go beyond open-faced sandwiches, with much of the bacaro ‘s seafood and vegetables sourced from the nearby Rialto Market. Overwhelmed by the choices, we ordered by pointing at food both behind the counter and on plates.

Squeezing our way into a table (or was it a ledge?), we nibbled with glee between sips of prosecco spritzes. And so began our cicchetti adventure in Venice.

Pro Tip You may get lost if you follow Google Maps to Osteria all’Arco. However, an informed reader has suggested using the address Calle Arco, 436 instead of the address listed in Google Maps. Once you find the popular cicchetti bar, you’ll be happy you made the effort.

Osteria all’Arco is located at Campo S. Polo, 436, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy .

2. Cantina do Spade

Cantina Do Spade in Venice

Cantina do Spade is another classic Venice cicchetti bar located near the Rialto Market. The popular spot fills with locals and food travelers all day every day. We were more than happy to join the party during our midday visit.

After securing a standing spot outside the 15th century building, we greedily scarfed down plates topped with mezze uova (boiled eggs), calamari fritti (fried calamari) calamari ripieni (stuffed squid) and polenta.

Follow our polenta recipe and cook the creamy dish at home.

Cicchetti at Cantina Do Spade in Venice

Our favorite snack was easily the bacaro ‘s signature polpetta made with spicy sausage and smokey scamorza. Somehow, eating a trio of crispy meatballs on a stick made the meaty morsels taste even better.

Pro Tip Plan to stand while you eat cicchetti at Cantina do Spade. Tables are typically reserved for people with meal reservations.

Cantina do Spade is located at Calle del Scaleter, 859, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy.

3. Al Mercà

Crowd at Al Merca in Venice

Literally translating to on the market , Al Mercà lives up to its descriptive name. This tiny yet popular cicchetti bar is indeed located on a square close to Rialto Market.

However, its prime location isn’t what draws crowds to Al Mercà six days a week. Instead, it’s the bacaro ‘s vast selection of affordable panini sandwiches filled with Italian meats, cheese and even truffle paste.

Cicchetti Selection at Al Merca in Venice

Beyond food, Al Mercá serves a vast selection of wine, Prosecco and other liquid libations. Our only question is how they fit so many tasty bits into such a small space. If you can picture a clown car, then you know what we mean.

Pro Tip Bring your spare change to Al Mercà. Unless prices change, you can enjoy a sandwich and a glass of wine for under €5.

Al Mercà is located at Campo Bella Vienna, 213, 30125 Venice VE, Italy.

4. Vino Vero

Crowd at Vino Vero in Venice

Focusing on organic producers, Vino Vero is about as real as it gets when it comes to drinking wine next to a canal in Cannaregio. This should not be a surprise since vino vero translates to real wine .

A blackboard lists the bacaro ‘s available glasses and breaks them down in the categories of red, white, rosé and bubbly. Additional bottles line the wall. And that’s just the wine.

Cicchetti and Wine at Vino Vero in Venice

Vino Vero also serves an impressive selection of cicchetti snacks that pair well with its natural wine selection. We ordered a crostinisti to eat while we sipped red Italian wine. Our favorites were generously topped with a burrata and creamy baccalà mantecato .

Ironically, we later discovered that Vino Vero has a second location. Not only is it in Lisbon , but it’s literally less than a kilometer from our apartment. It truly is a small wine world after all.

Pro Tip Don’t attempt to order an Aperol Spritz at Vino Vero. This Venice wine bar is a no-spritz zone.

Vino Vero is located at Fondamenta Misericordia, 2497, 30100 Venezia VE, Italy.

5. Salvmeria

Salvmeria in Venice

Situated in a former salumeria (the Italian word for delicatessen ) in Venice’s Castello neighborhood, Salvmeria is just far enough away from St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Market to feel like a local haunt.

Cicchetti at Salvmeria in Venice

We went to Salvmeria for a wine break and couldn’t resist eating meatballs gloriously drowned in tomato sauce. Had we been hungrier, we would have also ordered tuna tartare and typical cicchetti fare. However, even our stomachs have their limits.

Pro Tip Stop by Salvmeria after attending an event at nearby La Biennale di Venezia.

Salvmeria is located at Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 1769, 30122 Venice VE, Italy.

cicchetti in venice

Those who have already been to Venice know this, the aperitif here is much more than a convivial moment before meals , it is a true ritual celebrated every day in the bàcari and some squares of the city. On sunny days you can see Venetians and tourists sitting at the tables sipping the typical bright red drink, the Spritz !

But this is not what we wanted to talk about here, but rather about the fancy little snack that can’t miss during these happy hours: cicchetti!

Cicchetti in Venice: what is a cicchetto?

In the rest of Italy, maybe you know, the word cicchetto indicates a shot of an alcoholic drink, but not in Venice! In fact the cicchetti in Venice are like the tapas in Spain .

The term probably derives from the Latin cicus , that is to say a small amount , in fact the term cicchetto means delicious tastings of dishes of all kinds.

Cicchetti in Venice: the ones you should definitely taste

Usually every Bàcaro , a typical Venetian tavern, has its selection of cicchetti. Among these, however, there are some that cannot miss in a self-respecting tavern!

Even if it is not a Venetian recipe, in the selection of delicious cicchetti which are usually offered you can find mozzarella in carrozza , a sort of fried sandwich filled with cheese and ham or cheese and anchovies. The undisputed king of tavern food is saor sauce , used to flavour sardines, pumpkin and other types of fish: you can’t say you have been to Venice without having tried at least one type!

Finally a cicchetto suitable for everyone, meatballs! In Venice you can find them of all kinds, from vegetarian to classic, made with simple or stewed meat, can you do without them?

We think not! Here’s a tour that will let you taste all of the above in some selected bàcari.

Cicchetti in Venice: the bàcaro tour

A bàcaro tour that will take you to discover all these flavors in the company of a guide who will tell you some curiosities and nice anecdotes about Venice. The tour lasts two and a half hours and includes 6 tastings in selected taverns. Taking part is really simple , just follow this link and select the number of people and the day. Emilia Delizia Venice food tour.  Our company would be delighted to organise a Venice food tour for your group, family, friends or company incentive travel. Our culinary activities are great for those wanting to explore the best Italian food traditions.

Venice food tour highlights.

Imagine that you are exploring the sights of Venice, that magical place that has welcomed travellers and explorers since the Middle Ages. In this city without cars, you can walk for hours, enjoying both the well-known sights such as St. Mark’s Basilica, the Rialto Bridge and  the Piazza San Marco. Naturally, this is bound to leave you hungry and thirsty. What better way to combine exploration with refreshment than participating in the tradition known as the cicchetti crawl? Cicchetti are snacks, rather like Spanish tapas , served in wine bars and taverns. You can easily sample a world of traditional, delicious Venetian cuisine and atmospheric tavernas, for a modest expenditure, over the course of an afternoon or evening.

The delicious food of Venice.

Since Venice is a city dominated by the sea it is no surprise that its food culture is dominated by the sea also: by deliciously fresh and abundant seafood, including cuttlefish, octopus, cod, sardines and shrimp. Meats, both fresh and cured, are also widely used in Venetian dishes, as is pasta and risotto rice. Fresh local vegetables such as artichokes from Sant-Erasmo and, in the spring, white asparagus, when fried or grilled, also become delicious cicchetti .

A culinary tour of Venice ’s cicchetti bars will reward you with a world of tastes. To begin your cicchetti adventure , look for places called bacari (wine bars) or osteria , both of which serve these traditional snack foods. Traditional cicchetti are simple: chunks of salami, pieces of cheese, fried olives and fried seafoods. Modern cicchetti include these dishes, but they also can be much more elaborate - dinners in miniature.

C icchetti are accompanied by small glasses of wine (about the size of a double shot) known as ombra , or shade. These mini glasses of wine were long ago nicknamed ombra, after the wine sellers in the Piazza San Marco, who kept in the shade to keep the wine cool and fresh. Or perhaps you would like to drink an aperitivo - a pre-dinner drink designed to whet your appetite. In Venice, the traditional Spritz is often based on sparkling wine such as Prosecco (a dry white sparkling wine), mixed with sparkling water and flavored with bitters. These amari (bitters) include the ruby red bitters Campari or Select (made of herbs and fruits), bright orange Aperol (with bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb and cinchona), and Cynar (containing artichokes and several herbs). These aperitivo are fairly low in alcohol content, so are the perfect drink to choose while roaming between bacari .

Bacari and osterias in Venice.

Some of the best seafood-based cicchetti can be found in San Polo. Many osteria are near the Rialto Fish Market . At Cantina Mori (San Polo 429), which has been in business since the 15th century, you can try octopus and baccala' (salt cod). Sarde in saor , or sardines fried in olive oil with onions, pine nuts and raisins, is found there also. Baccala' is one of the most popular cicchetti; a creamy salt cod, it is served either on its own or on toast. At Pronto Pesce (319 San Polo), also near the Rialto Fish Market , you can savour swordfish croissant and scallops served in the shell - all served in a buffet style. If you prefer meat, try a hearty plate of polpette (meatballs), often served with an aioli sauce. Polpette , as well as prosciutto , pate and bread rounds topped with truffles, cheese and mushrooms await you at All’Arco (San Polo 436), near the Rialto Bridge.

Tidbits served on toast ( crostini ) or on squares of savory grilled polenta are also popular cicchetti . Try squid ink toast with or without curried shrimp at Osteria Bancogiro (Campo San Giacometto, San Polo). Risotto and pasta dishes are also delicious  - try the risotto Parmigiana  or the ravioli at Osteria Vivaldi (calle della Maddonetta, San Polo). Tramezzini  (little triangular sandwiches) may also accompany drinks in traditional bacari . Made from special, soft white bread, they are stuffed with a delectable variety of fillings including ham, olives, cheese or tuna.

Refreshed by cicchetti and an aperitivo or an ombra , you may now continue your explorations. This food tour is a delicious way to relax, recharge, and sample the best of Venice’s cuisine - and in doing so, getting to know Venice and her people, too. We offer cooking classes in Venice and check here for some ideas about eating like a local in Venice .

Bacari San Marco

I’ Bacaro de Bischeri
