2022 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards recognise the best of the industry

2022 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards recognise the best of the industry

The best of the best in the tourism industry have been recognised at the 2022 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, with Gold, Silver and Bronze national winners presented at a black tie gala event in Sydney last night.

Commenting on the 2022 program, Shaun de Bruyn, Chairperson of the Australian Tourism Awards, stated “this is the biggest annual celebration of tourism business excellence in Australia. And we have much to celebrate recognising and elevating the very best of what tourism has to offer in this great country of ours.

“Each of our award nominees have reached the status of absolute excellence in tourism and business to be here tonight - a night of reflection, triumph and solidarity for the industry. Australia’s tourism operators and products are truly outstanding across the board, and we’re seeing this with all states and territories represented in the winner’s pool.

“As an industry we are susceptible to many external factors, which has been highlighted over the past several years, but we continue to innovate, collaborate and come back strong. Many of our tourism operators are going from strength to strength, bouncing back after the worst of the pandemic.”

Overall, there were 75 awards presented across 25 categories with a Gold, Silver and Bronze winner announced for each category. The awards were once again supported by major sponsor, Qantas, with Tourism Australia and Destination NSW supporting sponsors.

de Bruyn added “we congratulate all tourism businesses who have entered, and particularly those who leave with awards which truly demonstrates excellence in their individual categories. Australia continues to deliver exceptional tourism experiences across all states and tourism continues to remain an important industry for the economy.”

Dean Gorddard Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual

Ms. ruth sandow, chair of milparinka heritage & tourism association.

Ruth Sandow has been described as a hardworking, community-minded individual with a heart of gold. She's dedicated over 25 years of tourism development, promotion and advocacy. Ruth’s commitment to the community is seen not only in tourism but with Landcare , Distance Education (School of the Air), Regional Development Australia, and as the former Chair of the Royal Flying Doctor Service , Southeast Section where she welcomed Prince Harry & Meaghan to the Royal Flying Doctors Service during their 2019 royal visit .

Starting as a registered nurse, Ruth and her husband Jon, purchased a station property in outback NSW and faced the usual adversities that come with station life. Her love of history helps in her efforts to promote the region of Corner Country to visitors and share the knowledge of the area, which in turn helps support local businesses. In creating the Milparinka Heritage & Tourism Association she has spearheaded the injection of millions of grant-funded dollars into the area over her time.

Milparinka has an average population through the year of four, at its lowest, two, and at its maximum, six. Yet Ruth’s programs attract over 100 volunteers who become part of the community in its peak season.

Milparinka wouldn't host 20,000 visitors a year if it weren't for Ruth! She understands that by building Milparinka as a destination, all of Corner Country benefits. In 2020 she successfully linked the whole region together in a monumental project which has set the town up for ongoing tourism success.

This project is known as Sturt's Steps .

Journalism for the curious Australian across politics, business, culture and opinion.

It follows last year’s national win, when Dwellingup was named Australia’s Top Tiny Tourism Town for 2023.

The town won gold at the WA awards in 2021 and 2023 and silver in 2022.

The awards recognise WA towns that demonstrate a strong commitment to encouraging tourism and increasing visitation.

Visitor centres and local governments enter the awards on behalf of their destination, with entries reviewed by a panel of judges before voting opens to the public.

More than 10,000 people voted for their favourite tiny, small and top tourism town at this year’s awards.

Shire of Murray president David Bolt said the award was a testament to the efforts of Dwellingup’s tourism workers.

“I would like to thank everyone in Dwellingup’s tourism industry for the passion you all apply in making it such a stand-out place to visit,” he said.

“I’d also like to thank those of you who voted for Dwellingup.

“For many years we have worked with the community to deliver the vision of Dwellingup’s businesses and residents. The community support through voting acknowledged these efforts and shows continue to deliver the right vision for Dwellingup.”

Busselton was named WA’s Top Tourism Town, with Geraldton winning silver and Collie bronze.

The Small Tourism Town category saw the gold medal awarded to Exmouth for the third consecutive year, while Christmas Island was awarded silver and Carnarvon bronze.
