All-Terrain Vehicle Safari

Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and take you to an expedition centre. Here, you will be provided with an overall, boots, helmet and goggles. After a briefing on how to operate the ATV, it is time to head out on the roads!

We drive into Adventdalen (the ‘Advent Valley’), towards the mountain Breinosa and Mine 7. Throughout the tour, we stop at various cultural monuments that testify to a 100-year-long era of mining. Here you can also get acquainted with the Svalbard reindeer that often graze on the nutrient-rich soil in the swamp area along the road. The arctic fox also tends to sneak around in this area, hoping to find food among thousands of birds and eggs, and together this constitutes an important eco-community. Do not forget to look down, because even though Svalbard at first glance feels barren, the swamp area is filled with beautiful, small plants.

At the viewpoint up on Breinosa, we enjoy the view towards Isfjorden before we drive back towards town. On the way home, we make a pitstop at Svalbard Husky to greet a group of energetic and social sled dogs, who will be happy to receive cuddles from us.

We point our compass in the direction of the Advent Valley and drive away from artificial light of Longyearbyen behind. Most people don’t notice the light until they enter the darkness.

At this time of year, the sun is below the horizon around the clock. It’s completely dark and there is no difference between day and night.

This period is called the Polar Night and lasts from November until late January.

The darkness creates the perfect backdrop to experience natural light from the moon, stars and maybe also the Northern Lights.

After a briefing about safety and everything you need to know about the vehicle, it’s time to set off into the darkness.

Dog yards, cultural monuments and the former airport are also passed on our way up the Breinosa mountain to the active coal mine, Mine 7.

This is a great spot to chase the Northern Lights and admire the Arctic silence.

On our drive back to Longyearbyen, we visit the dog yard at Svalbard Husky and have a close-up encounter with the huskies.

Hot drinks and biscuits will also be served while the guide shares stories about Svalbard and life in the dog yard.

Please note that all participants must hold a valid driving licence. As off-road motor traffic on ground that is not snow-covered is prohibited pursuant to the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act. We only drive our ATVs on roads where driving is permitted.

We will drive our Can-Am Outlander ATVs from Longyearbyen and into the Advent Valley. Several stops will be made underway where our knowledgeable guides will tell more about several historical sites in the valley. We drive to the top of the Breinosa mountain where we will have a stop outside the only active Norwegian coal mine in Svalbard: Mine Number 7. While we are here, we will look for the Northern Lights and feel the ultimate Arctic silence.

If there is time, we can visit one of the dog yards on the way back, where we will to meet the Polar dogs and their owners. On this adventure hot drinks and snacks will be served while the guide share more stories about the area.

Please note that all participants must carry a driving licence on this tour. We will only drive ATV's on roads where it is allowed to drive by car. Non-Norwegian digital driver licenses are not valid for driving in Norway.

ATV Safari in Longyearbyen

Experience the thrill of an ATV safari tour and explore the exotic and extreme scenery of Svalbard on this tour through the Advent valley. This is an excellent place to look for local wildlife. If you are lucky, you might spot both the Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes.

The tour starts in Longyearbyen, where you will meet your guide and receive warm clothing before embarking on the journey to the Advent Valley (Adventdalen) on the ATVs. During the trip you will stop at various historical and cultural sites and the guides will share their knowledge and personal insights about nature, coal mines and culture. In the summer the mountains are covered in warm tones by the midnight sun and from mid-august the polar night will take over. In the autumn the colors will change, and the sky is painted by beautiful pastel colors during sunset.

Reindeer grazing on the nutrient-rich soil in the wetlands along the road is not an uncommon sight. If you are lucky, you might spot arctic foxes sneaking around hunting for food. In the spring and summer, the area has an abundant and unique bird life. Additionally, you will pass the old airport in Longyearbyen and Svalbard Husky, where you will meet the huskies in the dog yard, and you will be served a hot beverage and biscuits before you head back to Longyearbyen.

Physical requirement: This tour suits most people with an average fitness level. 

Weather dependent: All outdoor activities are weather dependent and may be cancelled or replaced by more suitable alternatives should the conditions not permit to run the tour as planned. A full refund will be made for activities cancelled by the supplier due to weather conditions.

The Svalbard Environmental Protection Act prohibits driving off-road on the fragile Arctic tundra. ATV are required by law to only drive on roads.

Explore Svalbard on four wheels! Discover the breathtaking beauty of Svalbard on an exciting ATV tour. Drive along the rough roads of Longyearbyen and enjoy spectacular views of the Adventdalen valley as well as historical sights like the Longyearbyen coal mine.

What to expect on an ATV tour on Svalbard

During the ATV tour you will be rewarded with impressive views of the majestic Isfjord and the surrounding mountain peaks. Keep your camera ready to capture these unique moments. With a little luck, you may also spot fascinating wildlife such as arctic foxes and a variety of bird species.

At the same time, you will pass interesting sights, such as Longyearbyen's former airport, where planes used to land on the ice in winter, or the coal mine, which was still in operation until recently. These impressions are complemented by exciting stories about life in the northernmost city in the world.

Suitable equipment

With a suit, helmet, boots and gloves, you are ideally equipped for the sometimes somewhat harsher temperatures of Svalbard and can enjoy your ATV adventure warm and cosy.

An unforgettable adventure

Immerse yourself in the fascinating landscape of Svalbard and feel the thrill of riding the ATVs. Experienced guides accompany you during the approx. three-hour tour and ensure that you can enjoy the beauty of the Arctic nature to the full.

This tour is conducted by one of our local partner companies in English. In order to protect the unique landscape of Svalbard, it is not allowed to leave the road with the ATVs .

We drive our ATVs into a classic Svalbard landscape in Adventdalen, a valley shaped by glaciers and surrounded by mountains and interesting cultural monuments. We regularly see both Svalbard reindeers and Arctic foxes on this trip.

Our goal for this trip is our partner Svalbard Husky. There we will be served a hot beverage, biscuits and loads of husky cuddles.

Please be aware that The Svalbard Environmental Protection Act prohibits driving off-road on the fragile Arctic tundra. We are required by law to only drive on roads. The ATV safari is a great way to learn just a fraction of what makes Svalbard such a fantastic place to live, and we guarantee you will leave feeling enriched from the experience.

Please notice:  A car or motorcycle- driving license is required for driving an ATV. The driver's license must be carried throughout the tour. There will not be given any refund of activity if you forget to bring your driver's license. Non-Norwegian digital driver licenses are not valid for driving in Norway.

Summer ATV Safari

With svalbard adventures.

We dress warmly and drive our ATVs into Svalbard’s summer landscape, where deep valleys and high mountains are home to the Svalbard reindeer and polar fox.

Historical highlights

We drive our Can-Am Outlander ATVs from Longyearbyen and into Advent Valley, making several stops along the way at historical sites where our guides will share their knowledge and personal insights about the nature, coal mines and culture.

Even though we are so far north, the rich fauna here means that wildlife sightings are also possible.  It is not uncommon to see the Svalbard reindeer grazing on the tundra and in the summer months there is a rich and unique bird life.

We pass Longyearbyen’s old airport and visit our good friends in the dog yard of Svalbard Husky. There are many eager dogs waiting for our full attention. Maybe we meet Obelix, Nansen, Gandhi and Chaplin. The puppy litters are often named after films, books or series. We take a break here and serve coffee, tea, hot toddy and biscuits before we are heading back to Longyearbyen.

Vi kjører inn Adventdalen på ATVer i et klassisk Svalbardlandskap med dype dalbunner og høye fjell. Det er vanlig å se både svalbardrein og fjellrev på denne turen, sommer som vinter.
