Asian Tour Taking High Road to Scotland

asian tour st andrews

St Andrews, Scotland: The Asian Tour will make history by staging an event for the first time in Scotland at the acclaimed Fairmont St Andrews.

The sixth leg of The International Series 2023, the inaugural St Andrews Bay Championship will take place from August 24-27 at the venue’s Torrance Course, a 7,320-yard layout set among 520 acres of stunning Scottish coastline with views of St Andrews Bay.

Following immediately after the International Series England in an Asian Tour ‘UK summer swing’, the 156-strong field will compete for a minimum of US$1.5 million prize purse on the modern links layout.

Designed by former Ryder Cup stalwart Sam Torrance , the course is characterised by its deep revetted bunkers, large greens and links design.

Less than five miles from the Home of Golf, where there is recorded evidence of golf being played as long ago as 1552, Fairmont St Andrews has previously staged many notable international events including on the DP World Tour, the European Seniors Tour, on six occasions between 2009 and 2014, as well as Open Qualifying.

Fairmont St Andrews owners Caleb Chan and Dr Peter Lam both hail from Hong Kong and their decision to host the event comes off the back of the inspired recent victory of Taichi Kho – who became the first Hong Kong player to win on the Asian Tour.

His victory in the World City Championship in what was just his third professional start on the Asian Tour also earned him a berth in his first Major championship, this summer’s Open.

Callum Nicoll , Head of Golf and Estates at Fairmont St Andrews, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be staging another world class event at Fairmont St Andrews, and to be making history as the first Scottish host for the distinguished Asian Tour.

“The Torrance Course offers a challenging test for the players this summer, blending the principles of links golf with a more modern style. Contouring the hotel and set against the backdrop of the picturesque east coast of Fife, the Torrance will test the short and long game whilst the risk-reward design provides numerous options both off the tee and for approach shots to the green.

“The elevated nature of The International Series with generous purses, strong international fields, and the reward of a place for the Series winner in next year’s LIV Golf League, all makes for a very exciting tournament in the summer.”

Cho Minn Thant , Commissioner and CEO of the Asian Tour, said: “There are few greater experiences in golf than playing in Scotland. It is widely known that Scotland’s golf fans are among the most knowledgeable fans anywhere in the world and our players are really looking forward to teeing it up at a venue that is linked to the origins of the game as we know it. It is a true privilege.

“This is testament to the global vision of The International Series, and we are grateful to the dedicated team behind the scenes which has enabled the Asian Tour to grow from strength to strength over a short period of time.”

The Asian Tour’s elite-level International Series comprises of 10 events, featuring elevated prize funds, staged at iconic venues and welcoming top golfers from every continent and Tour.

Rahul Singh , Head of The International Series, said: “The St Andrews Bay Championship will provide The International Series with an incredible opportunity to visit the ultimate golfing destination, St Andrews, Scotland. We thank Fairmont St Andrews for helping to make this possible.

“The chance to stage an event at the Home of Golf so early on in our journey will be truly inspirational for our players and everyone involved in The International Series.

“We are an ambitious initiative that aims to travel and go beyond our traditional borders to help grow the game and there can be no better place to play one of our events than where the game originated.”

Held throughout the year across Asia, Europe and the Middle East in a mix of established and emerging golf markets, The International Series contributes US$19 million to the Asian Tour’s 2023 total prize fund.

The ground-breaking series awards the leading points-scorer in The International Series Order of Merit with exemption into the following season’s LIV Golf League.

The 2023 International Series visited Oman and Qatar in February and Thailand in March. The fourth leg takes place in Vietnam this week with England (August 17-20) and Scotland (August 24-27) now confirmed. A further four events will be announced shortly.

Eugenio Chacarra Claims Historic And Dramatic Asian Tour Victory

The young Spaniard took 10 playoff holes to defeat Matt Jones, with Chacarra claiming the inaugural St Andrews Bay Championship

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Chacarra poses with the trophy

Throughout the history of golf there have been a number of epic playoffs and, at the St Andrews Bay Championship, we were treated to yet another, with Eugenio Chacarra defeating Matt Jones at the 10th playoff hole to pick up the title.

Both LIV golfers had finished 19-under-par for the tournament, with both men looking to build momentum with just three LIV tournaments remaining. However, it was the 23-year-old Spaniard who got the better of the veteran, Jones, with Chacarra parring the 10th playoff hole to win a first Asian Tour title.

We are heading into a playoff here at the 𝗦𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽!⛳Matt Jones and @Eugeniochacarra are tied at the top on -19 after carding 69 and 67 respectively in regulation play. Back to the 18th tee!#SABC #InternationalSeries #whereitsAT pic.twitter.com/kjuKSoay4g August 27, 2023

“It was a long day,” said Chacarra, who adds to his LIV Golf Bangkok title from last October . “Happy it came out my way, but I mean, Matt had a tremendous day as well. Tremendous 10 holes, I think we all know he's a great player. Thank you very much. It came out my way but I'm sure Matt will win a lot of more events."

He went on to add: “It was amazing, I think the Asian Tour is doing amazing things. I mean, they're growing the game of golf and I had a lot of fun. We normally don't get these good days in Scotland, so it was awesome. I mean, obviously I got the win so it would make it a little more fun, but it was awesome. Yeah, thanks to the Asian Tour and International Series for what they're doing and hopefully we can come back a lot more years.”

Starting the day, a number of players could have secured the title but, after a 67 from Chacarra, and a 69 from Jones, the two would face off in a playoff. After both birdied the first three playoff holes, it seemed to be advantage Chacarra, with the Spaniard making birdie as Jones was faced with a tricky chip.

However, Jones would chip in to extend the playoff further and, when both birdied the 18th for a sixth time, the playoff was forced to move to the par 3 17th. Eventually, after a few pars, it was Jones who couldn't mimic his opponent, with the 43-year-old missing a six-footer to take it to an 11th playoff hole.

The playoff was the longest in Asian Tour history and, according to Jones, it was a tournament which slid by the Aussie, with Jones stating: “I threw away a golf tournament with the way I putted during the tournament, and in the play-off. I putted pretty awful all week. I missed a lot of short ones. My speed was terrible, but I hit some nice shots.  It is always good to get into contention, but I am done now, I am tired.”

Such was the length of the playoff, it was just one hole short of the all-time longest sudden-death play-off: the 1949 Motor City Open, between Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum, which lasted 11 holes before they decided to share the honours.

Matt joined Golf Monthly in February 2021 covering weekend news, before also transitioning to equipment and testing. After freelancing for Golf Monthly and The PGA for 18 months, he was offered a full-time position at the company in October 2022 and continues to cover weekend news and social media, as well as help look after Golf Monthly’s many buyers’ guides and equipment reviews.

Taking up the game when he was just seven years of age, Matt made it into his county squad just a year later and continues to play the game at a high standard, with a handicap of around 2-4. To date, his best round came in 2016, where he shot a six-under-par 66 having been seven-under through nine holes. He currently plays at Witney Lakes in Oxfordshire and his favourite player is Rory McIlroy, despite nearly being struck by his second shot at the 17th during the 2015 BMW PGA Championship.
