My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process.The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok. 

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

A cruise line has canceled more visits to its private resort due to violence in the country and a new U.S. travel alert.

Royal Caribbean first suspended stops at its private resort in Labadee, Haiti in March. The suspension will now last through at least fall, the cruise line confirmed to USA Today.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority,” a spokesperson for the cruise line told USA Today. “Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution we have suspended all visits to Labadee fleetwide through September 2024.”

Royal Caribbean will continue to “monitor and reassess calls as needed,” the spokesperson said.

Haiti is currently under a Level 4 “Do Not Visit” advisory, the highest warning from the U.S. State Department, due to gang violence and riots. According to the United Nations, more than 2,500 people were killed or injured as a result of gang violence in Haiti in the first quarter of the year. Earlier this month, Dave and Natalie Lloyd, missionaries from Missouri who were working with youth in the country, were attacked and fatally shot by gang members as they were leaving a church service.

In its latest alert, the State Department said the security situation is Haiti is “unpredictable and dangerous” and any travel there should be “conducted at your own risk.”

“The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety traveling to airports, borders or during any onward travel” the alert said. “You should consider your personal security situation before traveling anywhere in Haiti. Only attempt to depart Haiti or travel within Haiti if you believe it is safe for you to do so.”

Among the risks cited were violent crimes, including kidnapping for ransom.

Ukraine's first deputy foreign minister has held talks with his Chinese counterpart in an effort to increase cooperation between the two countries, the Ukrainian ministry said. 

Ukraine's Andriy Sybiha also told Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong that he hoped China would participate in a Ukraine-led peace summit later in June. 

Mr Sybiha added that it could be "a good opportunity to make a practical contribution to achieving a just and lasting peace", the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.

A report earlier today (see 7.40am post) said that June's peace summit opened doors to "limited talks with Russia" - despite Russian officials not being invited.

Earlier we brought you news that Ukraine said it had shot down 22 of the 27 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia overnight (see 8.04am post).

Are there any signs of an underground Russian resistance operating inside Russia, or can Russians openly criticize Putin, as long as they don't protest on the streets or mention the war.

In a word, no.

There wasn't much opposition to speak of in Russia even before the war, but now there's nothing left whatsoever.

All of Putin's political opponents are either exiled, jailed or dead, as are those with any connections to Alexei Navalny.

Those who dare to speak out are silenced.

At one end, are the long-time critics and opposition activists, like Vladimir Kara-Murza, the dual Russian-British national opposition who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for treason.

But at the other end are ordinary Russians, like the former schoolteacher Nikita Tushkanov sentenced to 5.5 years for comments he made online about Putin.

The crackdown on dissent seemingly knows no bounds and it's created a climate in which those who oppose the war are terrified to speak out.

They do exist - as evidenced by the huge turnout for Navalny's funeral. But that was a unique moment and is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.

A unit of a Spanish firm that is refurbishing Leopard tanks for delivery to Ukraine suffered a cyber attack that took its website down, a pro-Russian hackers group said.

A spokesperson for the aerospace and defence company General Dynamics, of which the Spain-based Santa Barbara Systems is a part, said it was still analysing the cause of the website outage.

The company added that all of its operations in Europe were running normally.

The NoName hacking group claimed responsibility for the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Telegram. 

DDoS attacks direct high volumes of internet traffic towards targeted servers to knock them offline. 

"We sent our DDoS missiles against websites in Russophobic Spain," the group, which often directs such actions against countries which support Ukraine, wrote on Telegram.

NATO said last month that Russia was behind an intensifying campaign of hybrid attacks on companies and infrastructure in member states, an accusation Russia dismissed as "misinformation". 

Santa Barbara assembles heavy vehicles such as Leopard tanks and artillery equipment for the Spanish army and has been involved in refurbishing Spain's mothballed Leopard tanks for delivery to the Ukrainian army, according to the defence ministry.

Last week, Spain pledged €1bn (£850.5m) in military support for Ukraine this year.

An update on our previous posts on Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov's trip to Africa. 

Mr Lavrov announced that Moscow will send additional military supplies and instructors to Burkina Faso to help the west African country boost its defence capabilities, Russian state media reported.

Burkina Faso, under military leadership since a 2022 coup, has played host to contingents of the Wagner mercenary force, whose founder Yevgeny Prigozhin was killed in a plane crash last August.

"From the very first contacts between our countries after President [Ibrahim] Traore came to power, we have been very closely engaged in all areas of cooperation, including the development of military and military-technical ties," TASS news agency cited Lavrov as saying. 

"I have no doubt that thanks to this cooperation, the remaining pockets of terrorism on the territory of Burkina Faso will be destroyed," Mr Lavrov said. 

Russia's foreign minister has made a series of visits to Africa since the start of the war in Ukraine as Russia, hit by Western sanctions, seeks new trade partners and tries to rally developing countries behind its vision of a "multipolar world" no longer dominated by the US and former European powers. 

Growing Russian security ties with Africa, including countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger where military leaders have seized power in coups, are a source of concern to the US and other Western governments. 

Separately, the RIA news agency reported on Wednesday that Russian aluminium giant Rusal is in negotiations with the government of Sierra Leone on a bauxite mining concession. 

Some pictures have come in of Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov's visit to Africa (see 9.20am post), where he met his counterparts from Burkina Faso, Republic of Congo and Guinea. 

He also met the president of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

A senior US Treasury official has said US and allies' budget assistance is designed to help Ukraine combat corruption and increase transparency - amid its bid to become a NATO member. 

Brent Neiman, deputy undersecretary for international finance, said in a speech to the Atlantic Council thinktank that Ukraine's wartime economy has proven resilient during the conflict.

But he said that Ukraine needs to undertake reforms to "reduce the likelihood for conflicts of interest and corruption".

Mr Neiman laid out anti-corruption steps Ukraine has taken, including having public office holders report their asset holdings, insulating Ukraine's special anti-corruption prosecutor's office from political pressure and improving corporate governance at state-owned companies.

The US has provided roughly $175bn to Ukraine, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

The European Union and NATO have demanded widespread anti-graft measures before Kyiv can join the blocs.

“To be clear, I believe the US and the international community should help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's barbaric attacks even if there were no scope for Ukraine to make these sorts of reforms," Mr Neiman said. 

"Nonetheless, this is an important opportunity to help Ukraine do both.”

“To this end, budget assistance from the United States, Europe, and the International Financial Institutions is designed to help support Ukraine in undertaking a number of priority reforms.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected on an anti-corruption platform in 2019. Both Mr Zelenskyy and his aides have portrayed the recent firings of top officials, notably that of Ivan Bakanov, former head of the State Security Service, in July 2022, as proof of their efforts to crack down on graft.

The past two years has seen Ukraine's defence minister, top prosecutor, intelligence chief and other senior officials lose their jobs. 

Russia's supreme court has rejected an appeal by sociologist and activist Boris Kagarlitsky against his five-year prison sentence on charges of "justifying terrorism", the TASS state news agency reported. 

Kagarlitsky, 65, is a long-time political dissident and has spoken out repeatedly against the conflict in Ukraine in a magazine he edited and on his YouTube channel. 

A petition calling for his release has been signed by intellectuals and politicians from around the world including Canadian author Naomi Klein, former British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis. 

A former teacher at the prestigious Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences, Kagarlitsky was designated a "foreign agent" by the Russian government in 2018 and was last year added to a register of "terrorists and extremists". 

A Russian court handed him a 600,000-rouble (£5,272) fine in December 2023 after finding him guilty of "publicly justifying terrorism" in a video commenting on a Ukrainian attack on the bridge linking Russia to annexed Crimea in October 2022. 

The video was entitled Explosive Congratulations for Mostik the Cat - a reference to a real cat who lived on the Crimean Bridge and whose image was used by state media to promote the idea of Crimea belonging to Russia. 

Prosecutors appealed, saying the fine was too lenient, and Kagarlitsky's sentence was later increased to a five-year prison term.

The vehicle, designed by Dmytro Mamonov, was on display at a Ukrainian manufacturing presentation outside Kyiv last week.

The Russian Orthodox Church has "Russified" Ukrainian children abducted by the country's occupying forces, according to a new investigation.

Children from orphanages and boarding schools in the occupied Donetsk region were sent to Russia's Rostov region, a joint investigation by DOXA, a Russian opposition student journal, and open source outlet Kidmapping found. 

The report, cited by the Institute for the Study of War, found that in Rostov, the children were visited by senior clergyman Metropolitan Mercury - also known by his secular name Igor Ivanov - who encouraged them to consider baptism into the church. 

Other clergy have also called for the baptism of deported Ukrainian children into the church and reportedly encouraged them to join various "military-patriotic" youth organisations in Russia, the report said.

Ukrainian children from occupied Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts also stayed at shelters run by the Orthodox Church in Voronezh Oblast, where clergy and affiliated officials held "military-patriotic" events in an effort to encourage pro-Russian and pro-ROC sentiment among the children and cut them off from their Ukrainian identities.

The Institute for the Study of War previously found that the ROC is instrumental in enacting the Kremlin's Ukraine occupation plan. 

Maria Lvova-Belova, the Kremlin-appointed commissioner on children's rights, against whom the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant due to her role in the deportation of Ukrainian children, is married to an ROC priest.

Turkey’s Fidan arrives on first visit to China, will travel to Uyghur region

ANKARA — Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan arrived on Monday to  China in the first such trip for Turkey’s top diplomat, which will also include travel to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Fidan held his first meeting with Chen Wenqing, senior official of the Communist Party of China who oversees intelligence and police, as part of his three-day visit to the country. He then met with the Turkish business community in China, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.

In addition to his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, Fidan is also set to meet with Vice President Han Zheng during the visit, Turkey's state broadcaster TRT reported, citing Turkish diplomatic sources.

First high-level visit to Uyghur region since 2012

Following his meetings in Beijing, Fidan is also slated to travel to Urumqi and Kashgar in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China, marking the first high-level Turkish visit to the region since Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit in 2012.

Sibel Karabel, the head of the Southeast Asian Countries Strategic Studies and Research Center at Istanbul's Gedik University, believes the Xinjiang leg of the visit was “one of the most important keys” of Fidan’s trip.

Beijing granting permission for the visit to Xinjiang can be seen as a message not just for Turkey but also Western capitals that have been scrutinizing China's treatment of Uyghurs, Karabel said.

“The message from the Chinese perspective is, in a way, that Xinjiang is open to foreign visits,” Karabel told Al-Monitor.

“For Turkey, in turn, the visit bears importance in terms of stressing Turkey’s continuing support for Uyghurs’ right to have equal citizenship while respecting China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” she added.

Once an outspoken critic of Beijing over its treatment of its Muslim minority, Erdogan had accused China of committing “genocide” against the Uyghurs in 2009. He later toned down his criticism over the past years, eyeing to deepen trade ties with the global power.

Much of the international community, including the United States and the European Union, accuses China of oppressing the Uyghurs, incarcerating tens of thousands of its largest Muslim minority in internment camps in an effort to strip them of their Muslim identity. Beijing, in turn, denies the accusations, claiming that the camps are designed to combat separatism and provide “training” to de-radicalize Islamist extremists.

Turkey is home to one of the world’s largest Uyghur diasporas. Turkish authorities in February arrested  six people suspected of spying on behalf of Chinese intelligence, marking a rare public showdown against the Asian powerhouse.

The trade imbalance

In Beijing, Fidan and Chinese officials will discuss bilateral cooperation between the two countries, as well as regional and global issues during the visit, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. 

China remains Turkey's largest trade partner in Asia and its third-largest trade partner in the world, with the trade volume between the two countries standing at more than $47 billion last year. Ankara is seeking to increase its exports to China, as the balance of trade between the two countries is staggeringly in China's favor, with Turkey’s imports from China exceeding $44 billion last year.

The imbalance “is one of the major structural problems in the bilateral ties and this problem can be eased through direct investments and mutual projects, involving China’s Belt and Road Initiative,” Karabel said, in reference to a gigantic transit corridor aiming to connect China to Europe and Africa via more than 60 countries.

“I think this problem and initiatives aimed at reducing the foreign trade deficit will be among the top issues to be discussed in Fidan’s meetings with both his counterpart and other Chinese representatives,” she added.

Fidan’s visit comes only a week after Turkish Energy Minister  Alparslan Bayraktar 's visit to China for talks involving a third nuclear power plant that Turkey has been planning to build in the country’s northwest region. Bayraktar said the two countries were close to a deal on the plant, speaking after the visit.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi traveled to Turkey in July in one of his first visits abroad after his appointment to his post the same month.
