Review: Twelve South's 'ButterFly' is a Great Travel Charger

Earlier this month, Twelve South launched the ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger , and it may be the best multi-device travel charger that's come out to date. The "ButterFly" name comes from the shape, as it has two magnetic sides connected by a small strap in the middle.

twelve south butterfly 2

play The Apple Watch charger can be used flat or it can be popped out to support Nightstand mode and bands that can't charge in a flat orientation. The ‌MagSafe‌ side is a simple charging puck that connects to ‌MagSafe‌ iPhones and other devices like the ‌MagSafe‌ AirPods.

twelve south butterfly empty

Both the Apple Watch charging puck and the ‌MagSafe‌ charger can charge the ‌MagSafe‌ AirPods, which makes this 2-in-1 charger almost as versatile as a 3-in-1 model.

Bottom Line

This is the most compact travel charger I've tried, and I have no complaints, except for the price tag. $130 is expensive, but it is using two of Apple's proprietary technologies - Apple Watch fast charging and ‌MagSafe‌.

Other than the cost, this is the perfect travel charger and if you're looking for a premium solution that folds down small and works well with the ‌iPhone‌, AirPods, and Apple Watch, the ButterFly is worth checking out.

The ButterFly charger from Twelve South can be purchased from the Twelve South website or from the Apple website for $130.

The best multi-device wireless charging pads for 2024

These multi-device wireless charging stands and pads will keep your setup as cord-free as possible..

There’s a good chance you own a couple of gadgets that support wireless charging now, be it your iPhone or Android phone, wireless earbuds or smartwatch. Multi-device wireless chargers can help power them all up in one place, without the need for a bunch of cords messing up your space. There are dozens of these accessories out there today, and we’ve tested a bunch of the most popular models. You’ll find out top picks below for the best wireless charging stations, plus some advice on how to choose the right one for your needs.

Belkin MagSafe 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad

Best premium 3-in-1 wireless charger, logitech powered 3-in-1 dock, 3-in-1 wireless charger runner up, anker 533 magnetic wireless charger (3-in-1 stand), best budget 3-in-1 wireless charger, otterbox 3-in-1 charging station for magsafe, another good option, mophie dual universal wireless charging pad, best 2-in-1 wireless charging pad, samsung 15w wireless charger duo, 2-in-1 wireless charging pad runner up, mophie 4-in-1 wireless charging mat, best wireless charging pad for two people, do wireless charging pads work with any phone or device.

It won’t be shocking to hear that your smartphone choice influences your choice in a wireless charger. Only iPhone owners will need to consider Apple Watch compatibility. Likewise, you’ll need an Android phone if you expect to power a Galaxy Watch . Buy an iPhone 12 or newer and you can attach your phone magnetically using MagSafe, while the latest Android phones often have some form of fast wireless charging.

However, it’s not simply a question of getting the fastest charger. You should consider what you might buy in the future. Don’t buy a two-device charger if you have an iPhone and AirPods, but have been eyeing an Apple Watch. And if you think you might switch to an Android cell phone (or vice versa), you’ll want to get something more generic that doesn’t lock you into any one ecosystem.

Some chargers include cradles, trays and other features that are heavily optimized for particular products, and might not even account for year-to-year changes. Some vertical stands are too tall for small phones like the iPhone 13 mini , for instance. While you can never completely guarantee that next year’s phone or watch will work, it’s worth buying something more likely to last.

Having said all this, don’t be afraid to get a charger with vendor-specific features if you’re fiercely loyal to one brand. Apple isn’t expected to ditch MagSafe any time soon, and Samsung will likely keep making Galaxy Watches for a while to come.

How to pick the best wireless charging pad for your needs: Location, location, location

Even without a charging cable to worry about, you’re probably buying a multi-device wireless charger with one location in mind. It might sit on your nightstand or on your desk. Not everyone buys a charger just for themselves, though; you might want to use one as a shared station for you and a partner.

If the charger will sit on your nightstand, you’ll likely want a compact, stable unit that won’t swallow all your free space or tumble to the floor (and if it does fall, one with enough durability to survive). You may also prefer a lay-flat phone pad so your screen is less likely to keep you awake. The Apple Watch and some other smartwatches can double as tiny alarm clocks, so you might want a vertical charging option for any wristwear.

At a desk, however, you may want a vertical phone stand so you can check notifications. Will the charger sit on a low table? Horizontal charger pads may make it easier to grab your devices in a hurry. Travel chargers should fold up or otherwise protect the pads while they’re in your bag. And, yes, aesthetics count. You may want something pretty if it’s likely to sit in a posh room where guests will see it.

If it’s a shared charging station, you’ll want something with multiple generic surfaces, and you’ll probably have to forgo charging more than one watch at a time. In those cases, consider the handful of 4-in-1 wireless chargers on the market, or models with USB ports.

Wireless charging speed and performance

It’s no secret that wireless charging is typically slower than wired, and powering multiple devices adds a new wrinkle. As these chargers often have to support a wide range of hardware, you’ll have to forget about the fastest, device-specific options from brands like Google, OnePlus and Samsung.

That’s not to say these will be slow, but there just isn’t much separating them on the charging speed front. As a general rule, the quickest multi-device chargers tend to top out at 15W for phones. And you’ll need an Apple MagSafe charger if you want to get that full 15W on an iPhone.

It’s rare that you’ll find a truly slow example, mind you. Even some of the most affordable options we’ve seen will recharge your phone at a reasonable 7.5W or 10W, and the 5W for other devices is more than enough. If you’re only docking overnight or while you work, speed won’t make a huge difference. Just be sure that whatever you buy is powerful enough for a phone in a case. It’s also worth noting that fast charging for other devices is rare, although you’ll occasionally find speedier options for the Apple Watch Series 7.

Quality, box contents and small details

The difference between a good charger and a great one often boils down to little details. You won’t always need to pay extra to get those, but a larger outlay may be worthwhile to avoid frustrations for years to come.

A textured surface like rubberized plastic or fabric will reduce the chances your expensive gadgets will slide off their charging points. The base should have enough grip and weight that the charger won’t easily shift out of place. Any floating or vertical stands should be sturdy — steer clear if there’s any wobble.

You’ll also want to make a note of what’s included in the box. Some chargers don’t ship with power adapters, and we've seen numerous models whose Apple Watch “stands” are merely holders for your existing charging puck.

Then there’s helpful touches like status lights for confirming correct placement, although you’ll want to make sure they dim or shut off after a certain amount of time. And while it’s still true that cradles and trays can limit compatibility, you do want your devices to stay where you put them. Shelves and lips can prevent your phone or watch from sliding. Oh, and be wary of floating smartwatch mounts, as heavier timepieces might sag.

It doesn’t get much better than Belkin’s most advanced model of wireless charger if you’re an Apple devotee. The high-quality BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 pad offers 15W MagSafe charging for your iPhone, fast charging for the Apple Watch and a space for AirPods Pro or other earbuds with Qi-compatible cases. The base is weighty, covered in rubberized plastic and includes a discreet status light for your earbuds. More importantly, it supports more devices than you might think. Although the Pro pad uses MagSafe, the horizontal layout lets you charge virtually any phone at reduced speeds. We also have to give Belkin kudos for one of the most convenient Apple Watch chargers we’ve seen. It not only works horizontally and vertically, but includes a knob to adjust for different sizes and third-party cases.

This is quite large compared to some 3-in-1 chargers, so it’s not the greatest choice for a nightstand. Consider the smaller footprint of its counterpart, the BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with MagSafe 15W, if you have an iPhone 12 or newer. You also won’t find USB ports, and the indented earbud pad rules out a second phone. Still, it’s easily worth the $150 asking price.

  • Supports three devices at once
  • Supports 15W MagSafe charging for iPhones
  • Can adjust to support different Apple Watch models
  • A little large and heavy

There are many quality high-end chargers to choose from, but Logitech’s Powered 3-in-1 Dock offers a few features that help it rise above. It consumes relatively little space, and the rubberized horizontal and vertical chargers deliver up to 10W while gripping your devices tightly, so both you and your partner can top off.

It has a few limitations, though. The vertical stand isn’t well-suited to the iPhone 13 mini and other small phones. And while the floating stand works with most Apple Watches, heavier ones tend to sag (such as this author’s steel Series 5 with a Leather Link strap) and might not charge properly. If those aren’t issues, though, your $130 will be well-spent.

  • Compact design
  • Vertical spot supports up to 10W of power delivery
  • Vertical spot isn't the best for smaller phones

You can find plenty of more affordable 3-in-1 chargers. Few, however, offer quite as much for the money as the Anker 533 Wireless Charger Stand . It offers an adjustable-angle 10W vertical stand and lets you charge an Apple Watch either horizontally or vertically. There’s also a 20W USB-C power adapter in the box, so you won’t have to buy an aftermarket brick (or rely on proprietary cabling) to get started.

The limitations mostly stem from the cost-cutting measures. You probably won’t have room for a second phone. And like some chargers we’ve seen, the Apple Watch mount is a bring-your-own-cable affair that only supports older USB-A connections. The included cable with your Series 8 or SE won’t work here. At $58, though, this 3-in-1 wireless charging stand is a good bargain.

  • Adjustable 10W vertical charging spot
  • Includes a 20W power adapter in the box
  • Must bring your own cable to charge Apple Watch

If you’re willing to spend a bit more and live in Apple’s universe, the Otterbox 3-in-1 Charging Station for MagSafe is worth your attention. The extremely small footprint of this wireless charger is ideal for nightstands. You can tuck a trio of your phone, earbuds and Apple Watch into an area normally reserved for a single device. The company supplies a surprisingly powerful 36W USB-C power adapter in the box that serves as a fast wired option in a pinch.

The caveats are clear. The floating magnetic charger rules out Android phones and older iPhones. You’ll need to bring your own Apple Watch cable, and the USB-A port won’t work with the USB-C cables bundled with newer watches. The horizontal-only watch mount also rules out clock functionality. The overall balance of space and utility is still difficult to top for $80.

  • Includes a 36W USB-C power adapter in the box
  • Floating MagSafe spot doesn't work with older iPhones and Android phones

The 2-in-1 field is highly competitive and makes it difficult to choose an absolute winner. However, Mophie’s Dual Wireless Charging Pad hits many of the right marks. It can charge two Qi-certified devices at up to 10W each, making it a great pick for a two-phone household. The fabric surface with rubberized trim should keep your gadgets steady, and the status lights will confirm accurate placement. There’s even a USB-A port to plug in your watch charger or any other wired hardware.

The complaints are few. You won’t charge at 15W, and we’d rather have USB-C than USB-A. It’s nonetheless a safe choice at $80, and worth buying over less expensive options.

  • Can charge two devices simultaneously, both with 10W
  • Attractive design
  • No included USB-C port

Multi-device chargers from phone manufacturers tend to be either compromised or highly proprietary, but Samsung’s Fast Charger Duo (sometimes known as the 15W Duo Fast Wireless Charger) bucks that trend. It’s compact and delivers high-speed charging for one phone and an accessory, whether it’s a Samsung Galaxy Watch or another manufacturer’s earbuds. The status lights will even dim at night, and change color to indicate when your batteries are full.

This won’t help for two-phone households, and Samsung only guarantees 15W charging for some of its own phones (the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S20 and later). You’ll also want to be mindful of which version you buy, as there are variants with and without a power adapter in the box. Neither is cheap at respective prices of $90 and $70. This remains an elegant charger for nightstands and travel, though, and the pads are sufficiently device-agnostic.

  • Supports 15W charging
  • Power adapter included only with certain variations

There are few wireless chargers built with more than one person in mind, but Mophie’s 4-in-1 Wireless Charging Mat is the most well-rounded of the bunch. The pad can handle up to four devices wirelessly at 10W, including two phones and two accessories. There’s also a spare USB-A port for charging earlier Apple Watch models (using the included mount and your own cable) or wired items. A fabric surface, subtle device trays and indicator lights will also take the mysteries out of charging.

This is a giant charger compared to most, and you might find it limiting if your home has more than one Apple Watch or accessories that won’t fit the smaller charging pads. Even so, Mophie is offering considerable value for $150. The 4-in-1 does more than some 3-in-1 chargers at that price, and it doesn’t suffer the compatibility issues of rivals like Nomad’s Base Station Pro.

  • Supports up to four devices at once
  • Attractive design with indicator lights make it easy to use
  • Large footprint

Key Takeaways

  • The Twelve South ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger is a compact travel accessory that can charge an iPhone and Apple Watch simultaneously.
  • The charger has a metal exterior and a leather-like strap for elegance, but the metal-on-metal sound when the halves touch is not ideal.
  • While it is smaller and less expensive than the Mophie 3-in-1 charger, the ButterFly charger's $129.95 price tag may deter some buyers, even though it performs well.

Twelve South doesn’t label its new ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger as a travel accessory, and you can use it at home, but it is, in fact, a device meant to pack away and travel with. It’s great because the petite iPhone and Apple Watch charger bends, tilts, and snaps together, all in the name of functional portability.

Twelve South Butterfly 2-in-1 USB-C MagSafe Wireless Charger

Charge your iPhone and Apple Watch together with ButterFly, the world’s smallest 2-in-1 USB-C MagSafe charger.

  • Top charging speeds for iPhone and Apple Watch
  • Petite size
  • Functional form
  • Metal-on-metal sound isn?t ideal
  • High price is only justified by compact size

The ButterFly 2-in-1 Charger Is Perfectly Small

Out of the box, the ButterFly charger looks, and nearly feels, like a yo-yo. It’s close enough in size, and the circular shape with the two halves gives it the impression of that toy. If not a yo-yo, it looks like a pocket watch or macaroon. Of course, its matte metal finish keeps it from appearing too much like food.

The metal exterior is a premium touch. The vegan leather strap holding the two parts together and the faux leather interior finishes also raise the elegance of the accessory.

At first glance, the surrounding metal appears obvious, but the moment the device is flipped around and the two metal pieces touch, it’s debatable whether it is the smartest choice. Make no mistake, the two parts are meant to touch, too. There are instructions for using the ButterFly in multiple orientations and there are magnets that join the metal parts together.

When the metal touches, however, the premium allusion dissipates. It’s not quite nails on a chalkboard, but the sound and feel aren't ideal. This leads to one of my minor complaints that neither the interior magnet nor the one on the back is quite strong enough.

The outside magnet can stick the two pieces together, but they still slide around easily. The inside one doesn’t seem strong enough or precisely positioned enough to get the two circles aligned perfectly when closing the ButterFly.

All of this is a bit nitpicky, of course, but its $129.95 retail price demands more scrutiny.

To help offset some of the cost, the ButterFly charger comes with a 30W USB-C charger, a braided USB-C cable, and international wall adapters. It’s certainly a nice touch, but I’ll only be adding the cable to my collection. The power adapter isn’t huge, but it is still nearly the same volume as the ButterFly itself. And the international adapters seem like a waste all around. (Anyone willing to buy a $130 charger probably already has an international plug solution.)

Practical For Packing Compared to Other Products

The ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger is an obvious coup to take over the void left by Apple’s discontinued MagSafe Duo . It’s not uncommon for Apple to release charging accessories mid-cycle, however, so whether Apple will revive the old Duo with a USB-C port is still up in the air.

As it stands, if you already have and use a MagSafe Duo, I probably wouldn’t trade it in for this ButterFly charger. Apple’s charger is just so thin and well-constructed. Twelve South’s charger does fast-charge an Apple Watch and uses USB-C, which I liked, but those aren't absolutely critical for this type of nightstand product.

The ButterFly charger does get my recommendation over the Mophie 3-in-1 charger. In this case, Twelve South’s product is smaller and less expensive. It doesn’t have a third charging spot, but I’m not convinced it’s needed.

AirPods can be powered on the iPhone spot or, if you have AirPods Pro 2, can be charged on the Apple Watch charger.

The leather-like strap connecting the two halves allows the charger to be folded and used in four specific ways: flat with two devices, watch only, phone only, or iPhone horizontal for StandBy mode .

When each device is charging by itself, the other side is folded underneath, facedown. I can’t think of times when I would only want to charge my watch, but using it for an iPhone without having the watch portion spread out is a nice touch.

Using the ButterFly horizontally for StandBy mode felt like a little bit of a hack, especially because the watch charger on the back is much less ideal. Still, I like that it’s even a possibility.

Price and Availability

The ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger is available now, directly from Twelve South and Apple. It has been back ordered at Apple until early February, but more supply should be available in 2024.

Should You Buy the Twelve South ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger?

I love finding ways to keep all my devices powered on the road while keeping a minimally packed bag. The Twelve South ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger is a worthy travel accessory for this reason.

It’s cleverly designed to accommodate an iPhone and Apple Watch in multiple positions. It has some quirks, but its primary drawback is its $129.95 price tag. The cost seems to cause most people to flinch and question whether they need the device to travel with.

I agree that the value is not ideal here. Other options can accomplish similar things for much cheaper. But the product itself performs well with only minor cosmetic distractions. So, if your budget is flexible or you travel enough to justify it, then the ButterFly is a solid product.

what’s included

What’s Included In The Box 1x PowerBase Go Duo 1x USB C Cable 1x SnapMag Ring User Manual Note: 20W USB-C adapter required for power supply (not included)

What devices can I charge with the PowerBase Go Duo? The PowerBase Go Duo is designed to charge your Apple devices, with dedicated charging areas for your iPhone or AirPods and Apple Watch. The Apple Watch charger can only charge Apple Watches and is not compatible with Galaxy Watches.

Do I need to install my own Apple Watch charging cable? No! The PowerBase Go Duo has an Apple Watch charger built into it meaning you will not have to install your own charger or cable.

Do I need a quick charge plug? Yes, in order for the PowerBase Go Duo to charge multiple devices you will need the minimum output required which is an 20W USB adaptor.

Do I need a SnapMag phone case? To have the best experience in terms of magnetic alignment, we suggest to use a SnapMag case. Devices that are MagSafe compatible without a case will still be able to snap in magnetically. However if you use a case over your device that is not MagSafe compatible you will not feel the magnetic hold.

Can I charge Samsung watches or phones? Samsung phones when paired with a MagSafe compatible case can be used with the PowerBase Go Duo (check compatibility to see if your devices are compatible). Galaxy Watches are not compatible with the PowerBase Go Duo.

In fact, with this charger, you can get your smartphone back up to an 80 percent charge in just half an hour. The included lanyard makes it easy to tote around, whether on your wrist or attached to your bag. We also love that it’s crafted out of 90 percent certified recycled plastics with a free e-waste recycling option for your old, unused devices.

Best With Built-in Cords

Charmast portable charger.

It can charge up to six devices at the same time.

The attached cords are short.

The slim and travel-friendly Portable Charger with Built-in Cables on Amazon is our top choice for those who need a variety of included cords for multiple devices. With six outputs and three inputs, this charging device is ideal for people with an array of different types of electronics, from smartphones to tablets, and micro devices. Its lightweight and slim profile make it easy to throw in your bag without taking up too much space. Each included cable can be tucked into the back of the device, keeping things organized so you don’t have to spend time untangling a mess of wires. Check the digital display screen to keep track of how much battery is left on your backup charger so you can plan appropriately (and it will take between four and a half to six hours to fully recharge). When at full capacity, this backup charger can power up your smartphone twice, your tablet up to 1.5 times, and much more.

Most Compact

Tntor portable charger for iphone.

It has a built-in lightning cable for charging iPhones.

Phones with USB-C ports (like Androids and newer iPhones) will need to supply their own C to C cable to charge.

The ultra slim Tntor Portable Charger for iPhone wins the award for “most compact” with a 6-millimeter thickness and credit card size. Specifically designed for iPhone users, the built-in cord means it’s ready to charge and you don’t have to tote around a separate cord. At 5,000 mAh, this charger is carry-on compatible and can charge not just your iPhone, but other lightning-equipped devices including an iPad, iPad mini, and AirPods. This is an ideal charger for those who don’t need to charge multiple devices and only need to top off their iPhone en route to their next destination. It offers one full charge when at 100 percent capacity and requires a three-hour charging time. The Intelligent Control Circuit feature protects your devices from overcharging, as well as other problematic issues such as over-voltage, short circuiting, temperature protection, and over-current.

The Details: 4.84 x 2.6 x .24 inches | 4 ounces | 5,000 mAh | USB-C (input); built-in Lightning cable (output)

Best Wireless

Podoru wireless portable charger.

Paired with a magnetic case, it can charge right on the back of your phone without a cord.

It will only work with a magnetic case (purchased separately) and is compatible with iPhone 12 series and higher.

Indulge in the luxury of leaving your cords behind with the Podoru Wireless Portable Charger that can power up to three devices with its magnetic charging capability. Compact with an impressive capacity to recharge your phone up to two and a half times, it’s an ideal option for travelers or those on the go for long stretches of time. The LED display shows how much battery is left in your charger — and, if you need to top off other devices in addition to your phone, two extra input and output ports allow you to do so. There are eight built-in low temperature ice cores and a protective safety system not just for temperature control, but also short circuit and overcharging protection as well. Thanks to its silicone shell, it’s easy to grip and with a soft exterior that won’t scrape your device when connected magnetically.

The Details: 5.67 x 3.43 x 0.94 inches | 6.5 ounces | 10,000 mAh | USB-A (output); USB-C (input/output)

Best With Stand

Aoguerbe magnetic power bank.

The stand is foldable and compact.

It’s a little bulkier than other models we’ve seen.

We love the folding stand that’s built into the design of the Aoguerbe Magnetic Power Bank. It allows you to charge your iPhone without the hassle of a bunch of cords when paired with a magnetic phone case. Charge up to three devices at a time, with the capacity to bring your iPhone to 100 percent up to two times per fully charged power bank. The included stand folds down to keep the compact profile of the power bank and can be used to keep your phone upright in either a vertical or horizontal orientation. The charger also won’t block your camera lens, so you can easily continue to use your phone while it’s being charged. Built-in temperature control and other safety protection helps ensure this device won’t damage your phone or overheat.

The Details: 4.09 x 2.68 x 0.86 inches | 6.7 ounces | 10,000 mAh | USB-C and Lighting (input); USB-C and USB-A (output)

Best for Tablets

Eggtronic laptop power bank.

It can charge your tablet up to four times.

Due to its powerful capacity, it’s larger and heavier than comparable power bank models.

We love the powerhouse Eggtronic Laptop Power Bank for so many reasons: it has the capacity to charge multiple devices twice as fast as standard models, and boasts a relatively compact size and sleek design. This universally compatible power bank can refuel the battery on not just your smartphone or tablet, but also laptops, cameras, bluetooth devices, and more. The LCD display shows the current battery life so you can stay up to date on its capacity. This durable device is a great travel companion for anyone; from professionals that need to stay in touch on the road and want the freedom to work from anywhere , to those exploring the great outdoors on a multi-day camping trip. When it’s time to recharge the power bank itself, it’ll only take about three hours which is impressive for such a powerful device.

The Details: 6.75 x 4 x 0.63 inches | 1.34 lbs | 20,000 mAh | 2 USB-A (output); USB-C (input/output)

Best for Laptops

Anker 747 power bank.

It can fully charge an entire MacBook Air.

It’s rather heavy — and expensive — if not using it to charge laptops often.

For travelers who are working en route to their destination and need to keep their laptop consistently charged, the Anker 747 Power Bank is our top choice. Compatible with a wide range of brands including Dell and Apple, this power bank can refuel computer batteries in anywhere from two to three hours. Charge up to four devices at once, and enjoy the long-lasting capacity that can power an iPhone 13 Pro up to five times before needing to be charged itself. Paired with the included Anker 65W 515 wall charger, this power bank can reach 100 percent in two and a half hours versus more than 17 hours without. Built-in sensors offer advanced temperature control to make sure the device doesn’t overheat while the battery management system prevents overcharging.

The Details: 7.2 x 3.23 x 0.95 in | 1.34 pounds | 25,600 mAh | 2 USB-C, 2 USB-A

Best Multi-device Charging

Anker prime 27,650mah power bank.

It charges three devices at once.

This charger is over the mAh limit for traveling on some airplanes, so it’s best to check with the airline before bringing it with you on board.

For those who need a power bank that can charge multiple devices (and fast), the Anker Prime 27,650 mAH Power Bank is a fantastic choice. While not necessary to use, the accompanying app shows you up-to-date stats, and can also help to locate your power bank with sound alerts should you misplace it. This exceptionally functional power bank can recharge a smartphone more than four times and a MacBook Air more than once before needing to be reloaded. Using the dual USB-C ports, the power bank itself can be recharged in less than 40 minutes. As a bonus, this soda-can-sized charging bank comes with its own travel pouch. The built-in active shield prevents the charger from overheating and other safety issues.

The Details: 6.37 x 1.96 x 2.24 inches | 1.47 lbs | 27,650 mAh |  USB-C, Lightning (input); USB-C, USB-A (output)

Best Fast Charging

Ugreen 145w power bank.

It can charge a MacBook Air in 90 minutes.

While compact, it’s a bit heavier than other models.

Not only does the Ugreen 145W Power Bank charge devices quickly, but it also can be charged back to 100 percent in under two hours using the two-way fast charging. This requires an additional purchase of a 65W charger . Because it has 145 watts in output, it can recharge a laptop more than once and a smartphone more than five times all at a rapid speed. The smart digital display keeps you in the loop with how much battery is left in the power bank. It’s also compatible with so many devices, from smartphones to drones, that you won’t be limited with what you can charge as you travel. With three ports, you can charge a few devices at a time as well.

The Details: 6.3 x 3.18 x 1.05 inches | 1.11 lbs | 25,000 mAh | 1 USB-C, 1 USB-A (output); 1 USB-C (input/output)

Best LED Display

Vnbbt magnetic wireless power bank.

The display shows both the available charge left on the device and the progress of the item it’s charging.

It’s not compatible with non-magnetic phone cases.

Take the guesswork out of charging when using the Vnbbt Magnetic Wireless Power Bank, thanks to its incredibly accurate LED display feature. It can be fully charged for your travels within two and a half to four hours. Its ultra compact, lightweight design makes it easy to bring along with you. The material is non-slip so you don’t have to worry about grip being an issue while using the magnetic charger paired with a magnetic phone case. The display is simple, quickly informing you of how much charge is left to go and how much is on the power bank itself so you can plan accordingly. Charge your iPhone in less than 45 minutes and power up two other devices at the same time.

The Details: 7.87 x 3.94 x 0.79 inches | 8.1 ounces | 10,000 mAh | USB-C (input/output), USB-A (output), and magnetic wireless charging

Best for Android

Iwalk small usb c portable charger.

It’s lipstick-sized and very portable.

The battery life isn’t that impressive compared to other power banks.

Specifically designed for Android users, this tiny portable charger easily fits in a bag or even your pocket. The iWalk charger is cordless as well, so you don’t need to provide a cord or untangle wires when you want to use it; simply plug it directly into the USB-C port. Although there isn’t an LED display to show the percentage of battery left, there are indicator lights to track the power level. It’s designed to prevent over-charging, short circuiting, and temperature control while using as well, so you can have peace of mind if you need to step away. In general, it takes approximately two and a half hours to recharge this portable device.

The Details: 3 x 1.8 x 1 inches | 0.071 ounces | 4,500 mAh | USB-C (input), USB-C (output)

Best With A/C Outlet

Sinkeu portable laptop phone charger.

It includes an actual plug as well as a cord for charging via a car cigarette lighter.

There are no slots for a USB-C.

For a power bank with an actual built-in plug, the SinKeu 65 Watt Portable Laptop Phone Charger is our top pick because of its portability and versatility. This power bank is fantastic for charging laptops, tablets, and other compatible devices like certain camera batteries (65 watts and under) that need a typical plug port. The 12V port is great for recharging speakers and other devices that require that output, while the 5V port is perfect for refueling your cell phone up to eight times before needing to be recharged itself. For compatible laptop models, it can provide a full charge twice, making this a great option for travelers with a wide array of devices. The included cigarette lighter plug makes it possible to recharge this power bank in your car as well. To fully recharge, it takes approximately four hours.

The Details: 6.8 x 3.8 x 1.8 inches | 1.1 lbs | 24,000 mAh | 2 USB-A, 110V AC outlet, 15V (input), 12V (output)

Best Colors

Charmast small portable charger.

It’s small and comes in a fun spectrum of colors.

It’s difficult to plug your phone into the charger if you have a case.

We love the colors and size of the Charmast Small Portable Charger that can easily fit in your pocket or purse. This charger has the ability to be fully recharged within an hour and a half when using a 9V-2A fast charger (or three hours with a standard one). Although it doesn’t have the capacity to fully power your smartphone back to 100 percent, it can provide up to 65 percent charge which is a great option for most travelers who just need to top up a device throughout their journey. It can, however, recharge AirPods up to six times. With no additional cords needed, plug it directly into your phone’s lightning port (and it’s also offered with a USB-C instead for Google, Samsung or iPhone 15 devices). With colors like pink, green, blue, orange, black, and white, you can match this portable charger to your phone’s case (or whatever suits your mood!)

The Details: 1.38 x 3.03 x 0.97 inches | 4.7 ounces | 5,000 mAh | USB-C (input), Lightning port (output)

Best With Wall Plug

Brand q ultra slim portable charger.

It’s ultra slim and offers 5-in-1 types of charging.

The built-in cords are stiff and not easy to manipulate.

We love that the built-in wall plug on the Q Slim Portable Charger folds into the power bank to keep a slim profile for transport and that this option comes with its own case. With three included cords, this universal charger is ideal for all types of phones, and you won’t have to bring additional cords along on your adventures. Most phones can be charged between two and a half to four times before needing to recharge the power bank. The included “Intelligent Power Management IC” makes sure your devices will be protected from short circuit, overheating, and overcurrent issues while in use. Another great feature is that you can charge your phone from the power bank while also charging the power bank from the wall plug.

The Details: 6.29 x 2.95 x 0.6 inches | 12.1 ounces |  10,000 mAh | Micro USB, AC (input); Lightning, USB-C, Micro USB (output)

Tips for Buying Portable Chargers

Consider charge potential and timing.

When shopping for a portable power bank, one of the main features to look out for is the capacity for fully charging your devices, especially your smartphone. If you have long travel days with little opportunity to plug your phone in and your backup charger can only offer half a charge to top it off, that may not work for you. Another thing to consider is how long it will take to recharge each of your important devices, as well as the length of time it will take to recharge the power bank itself. Most people can recharge a power bank overnight if it takes more than a couple of hours, but you need to look at your precise needs while on the go.

Decide how much capacity you need

All of the numbers referring to capacity in mAh and watt hours can be a little tricky to understand when deciding what you’ll need. The term mAh means “milliampere-hour” and measures the units of electric charge, or how much power it can hold. This will be the difference between being able to charge just one device at a time versus multiple, and/or charging your phone multiple times or even a laptop at all. If you just need to top off your phone and keep it from getting to zero percent, something below 5,000mAh should do the trick. If you need to charge your phone constantly or have more than one device, something more than 10,000mAh might be for you.

Since the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have rules for rechargeable batteries and power banks measured in the max watt hours allowed, you’ll need to know how to convert the mAh listed for the power bank or charger into watt hours to see if your device can come along with you. To do this, you’ll need to multiply milliamp hours by volts then divide by 1,000. So, if you take the Eggtronic Laptop Power Bank listed above, it’s 20,000mAh at 5V, making it equivalent to 100 watt hours.

The FAA and TSA state that any spare battery with more than 100 watt hours or 27,000mAh needs to have approval from the airline.

Look at the types and numbers of ports

One of the most important aspects of choosing a power bank is to make sure it will be compatible with your devices. The last thing you want is to purchase a back-up charger that’s only suitable for an iPhone when you have an Android. There are numerous options that offer more than one type of port. The most common inputs and outputs are USB-A and USB-C, as well as lightning ports (for Apple devices). Some models offer a wall plug or cigarette lighter adapter as well, perfect for those who need to charge a device from the car or have to charge something with a physical plug.

It’s important to note that regulations will have lightning ports outdated for future iPhones due to the European Union’s ruling that all smartphones need to have the USB-C charging port in common.

A portable charger or power bank is a great back-up solution to ensure you don’t run out of battery on your devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. They provide an extra lithium-ion battery-powered source — or another source like the sun — that can connect to a wide array of devices, depending on their ports or magnetic charging capabilities. When connected, they transfer their stored energy to the electronic device plugged in. Typically, they are small enough to fit in your bag without taking up too much space, and some are even compact enough to fit in your pocket.

Yes, it’s possible to bring most portable chargers on an airplane, though there are restrictions to abide by: it’ll have to stay in your carry-on luggage that you’ll have with you in the cabin, as it can’t be in a checked bag. It also can’t possess more than 100Wh (watt-hours) or 27,000 mAh capacity. If your power bank has a larger capacity than this, you’ll need approval from the airline.

A Quick Primer on MagSafe

Most of the wireless chargers in this guide are MagSafe wireless chargers . That means they take advantage of the magnets embedded in the back of the iPhone 12 , iPhone 13 , iPhone 14 , and iPhone 15 range . I cannot stress this enough: If you buy a case, make sure it is a MagSafe case . We have several third-party options in the linked guides above. A normal case will weaken the pull of the magnets in the iPhone and will not stick to MagSafe accessories well.

What's the point of MagSafe? You don't have to worry about misalignment with the wireless charger, meaning you won't wake up to a dead iPhone. Technically, this perfect alignment means chargers are also able to provide faster 15-watt charging, but Apple has restricted this perk to a small number of products from select brands. MagSafe is available in the AirPods as well (depending on your model ). Apple's AirPods and AirPods Pro with the wireless charging case will work with nearly all of the standard Qi wireless charging pads on these chargers (as will many third-party wireless earbuds ), but if you have AirPods with MagSafe, then you can hook it up to the magnetic mounts as well. If you don't have a MagSafe iPhone, then your device won't be able to attach to these chargers, though we do have some recommendations for older iPhones (and the iPhone SE ).

Best Overall

This classy chrome charging tree suspends two of your Apple gadgets in midair, and the relatively compact T-shaped design won't take up much room on your desk or nightstand. It can recharge your iPhone at the fastest 15-watt charging speed Apple allows, and it can also fast-charge the Apple Watch Series 7 or newer (not the SE). Drop the AirPods Pro (or AirPods with wireless charging case) onto the base and you'll be topping up all these devices from a single outlet. Everything sits securely in place, and you can even flip your iPhone into landscape orientation to watch a video while it charges. Belkin also sells a version as a pad if you don't want to have your devices propped vertically.

Best for Standby

Apple has a new feature in iOS 17 called Standby , which turns the iPhone into a clock on your nightstand with weather information when you put it in landscape orientation on a wireless charger. (The screen dims if you have an iPhone with an always-on display; if not, you can tap the screen to see the time.) Twelve South's 3-in-1 is an elegant wireless charger for the nightstand and gives the iPhone plenty of breathing room to rotate it to landscape mode and take advantage of Standby. It's Made for iPhone (MFi) certified, so it'll recharge your handset at the fastest 15-watt speed possible. I also like that the iPhone charger can swivel up and down, so you can better position the angle of your phone screen.

On the base is a fast charger for the Apple Watch that you can flip up or charge flat, and the back has a spot for the AirPods or another wireless earbuds case. It's nice and weighty and doesn't slide around easily. It comes with a proprietary and removable charging cable that runs into the base, as well as a charging brick, and Twelve South also includes international plug adapters for the US, UK, EU, and AU if you want to take it on your travels.

Folks seeking something a little more compact for the nightstand will appreciate this solid aluminum 3-in-1 charging station from Otterbox. It can charge all your Apple gadgets at top speed and comes with a 6.6-foot cable and a 36-watt wall charger. The MagSafe pad holds your iPhone securely, and there is a pad on the weighted base for AirPods. The integrated Apple Watch charger allows for Nightstand mode, but it is the weak link here, and I sometimes find that my Series 8 twists slightly. It doesn’t shift enough to prevent charging, but it could be a problem, especially if you have an Ultra or favor a heavy band for your Apple Watch. If you fancy this, make sure you get the correct version, because Otterbox also offers a cheaper 3-in-1 with a slot for Apple Watch charging around the back, which we don’t recommend.

Nomad Base One Max charger

Best 3-in-1 Pad

It's pricey, but this 3-in-1 charging pad from Nomad feels like you have to place it near a Steinway grand piano. If you want your iPhone out of sight and out of mind when you place it on a charger, a pad is the way to go—the MagSafe charger officially supports 15 watts to recharge your iPhone at the fastest speeds possible. The Apple Watch charging puck sticks up, so you can take advantage of Nightstand mode and see the time. However, this is not a fast charger, so your smartwatch won't juice up as quickly. No matter if you have a loop band or a normal strap, I was able to fit the AirPods Pro in the spot behind the Apple Watch puck to recharge it just fine.

The metal chassis is heavy and, paired with the anti-slip rubber base, this thing stays put. It comes with a 2-meter USB-C to USB-C cable, which is great if you want to plug it into your new iPhone 15 to juice it up faster, but I wish it came with a 30-watt charging adapter. Nomad sells this one that we've tested and like. I do want to point out that since this is a pad, you can still charge non-MagSafe devices wirelessly on it, making it a nice option if you're on an older iPhone.

Image may contain Electronics Speaker and Audio Speaker

Best for Older iPhones

Are you rocking an older iPhone without MagSafe support? This 3-in-1 charging stand is a sound alternative to the Belkin. The upright magnetic puck for the Apple Watch enables Nightstand mode (basically, a digital clock), and the center stand lets you place your iPhone vertically or horizontally. There’s also an indented spot for earbud cases, ensuring they won't slide off easily. An elegant glass finish lends it a classy look and feel.

Mophie 3in1 travel charger kit

Best for Travel

I took this little travel kit with me when I went to cover the Apple event in 2022, and it worked flawlessly. It comes with a felt carrying case that also includes a charging brick and USB-C cable. Take out the square-shaped stack and unfold it to find three wireless chargers in one elongated pad. The iPhone sticks magnetically to the center and charges at the fastest 15-watt rate, and you can pop up the Apple Watch dock to use Nightstand mode (sadly, no fast charging for the smartwatch). There's a grooved spot for the AirPods on the left. It feels great, is compact, and is pretty lightweight all around.

Anker 737 MagGo Charger

Another Nice 3-in-1

After a few weeks on the nightstand, I’m in no rush to replace Anker’s 737. This MagSafe 3-in-1 is sturdy and holds my iPhone 14 Pro securely. The option to charge in landscape makes it a nice way to take advantage of the new StandBy mode in iOS 17 that turns your iPhone into a bedside clock. However, the iPhone does block easy access to the Apple Watch from the front in this orientation. It can fast-charge at 15 watts and comes with a power adapter and cable.

The slight magnetic pull on the AirPods pad, which is on the inside of the triangle, helps with getting it in the right spot to recharge. However, it can be hard to grab the AirPods out of there, especially if you have an AirPods case . I just shove a finger in from the other direction and push it out. The only slight disappointment is the Apple Watch charger, which doesn’t support fast charging, so this is not a good pick for Apple Watch Ultra owners. It also lays flat, so doesn’t play nice with Nightstand mode, though that’s not such a big deal when you can use StandBy on your iPhone.

Anker 3in1 Cube with MagSafe Charger

Most Compact

You cannot get more compact than this dinky, dense, 2.5-inch cube from Anker. It has a MagSafe pad on top that charges at up to 15 watts, and the whole top section hinges to a 60-degree angle, revealing a charging surface for your AirPods. The wee pop-out shelf on the side has a built-in Apple Watch charger. It also supports fast charging and can comfortably accommodate any Apple Watch, including the Ultra, though the fact that it sits flat makes it less than ideal for Nightstand mode. Anker says you can fit it in your pocket, and while that is technically true, this is a heavy metal cube, so slinging it in a bag will be much more comfortable. You get a 5-foot cable and a 30-watt charger in the box.

Belkin BoostCharge Pro 2in1 charger

Best 2-in-1 Stand

Don't have an Apple Watch? No problem. This elegant 2-in-1 stand can recharge your iPhone and AirPods (or other wireless earbuds with wireless charging support). It comes in black or white with a metal post that connects the weighted base to the MagSafe charger. It can fast-charge your iPhone and hold it in portrait or landscape orientation (great for StandBy ). It is easy to grab my iPhone 14 Pro off this stand one-handed without tipping it over. There’s a circular indent at the front for charging your AirPods. The included power adapter plugs into the base via a barrel port.

Anker 633 MagGo portable charger

A Built-In Battery Pack

Another great dual charger for your AirPods and iPhone, this Anker device packs in additional functionality. The Anker MagGo 633 lets you magnetically attach an iPhone to the stand, but you can then pop the stand off and it turns into a 5,000-mAh power bank. It will stay on the back of your iPhone in your bag or pocket. When you're back home, slide it onto the dock and pop your earbuds on the base to refuel. If you like the idea, check out our Best MagSafe Power Banks guide for more options.

Zens 4in1 charger for Apple devices

A 4-in-1 Stand

If you own an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, there is a decent chance you might have an iPad too, so why not a 4-in-1 charging station? Zens offers a modular design, with a main stand for your iPad, a MagSafe pad in front to float your iPhone, and a slight indentation to charge AirPods below. The Apple Watch charger is a separate section that attaches magnetically (on either side) and holds your Watch in horizontal Nightstand mode, which looks slightly better than vertical. It feels durable with a grippy, rubbery, flecked black finish made from recycled plastic.

You get a 65-watt power adapter, power cable, and adapter plugs for the US, UK, and EU, which is quite handy. The main drawback with this is the large size, and you have to connect a cable to the USB-C port on the side to charge your iPad.

ESR HaloLock 3in1 Travel Charger and accessories

A Budget Travel Alternative

This travel kit from ESR is a good alternative if you want something that can prop your iPhone in portrait or landscape orientation. It can also display your Apple Watch in Nightstand mode, so you can peek and see how long before you must get out of bed. The main body folds open with a MagSafe charging pad for your iPhone and a slot behind for your AirPods. There’s also a USB-C port to plug the included Apple Watch charger into, though you need to turn it backward to use Nightstand mode (I did this and it worked fine). It is weird and slightly jarring that the Watch charger is white, since everything else is black.

It folds neatly, and ESR provides a faux leather padded pouch to store everything (power adapter and cable included). I worry slightly about losing the Apple watch charger cover, but it is magnetic and sticks to the top for safekeeping. Unfortunately, this charger does not support fast charging and is limited to 7.5 watts for the iPhone and 5 watts for the Apple Watch. But, hey, it's much cheaper than most of the other options in this guide.

Wasserstein 3in1 Charging Station

A 3-in-1 for Fitbit Fans

What if you have an iPhone and AirPods, but prefer a Fitbit to the Apple Watch? This 3-in-1 from Wasserstein has you covered. There are Lightning or USB-C plugs to slot your AirPods and iPhone onto plus a built-in charger for your Fitbit on a small extended platform. The iPhone and Fitbit are both angled for easy glancing (though you are stuck with a portrait view for the iPhone). I worry slightly about wear and tear on the ports here—be careful when sliding your devices on or off—but the advantage is that you get wired charging speeds. Just make sure you get the correct version. For the iPhone 15, you’ll want the USB-C station .

Fuel 3in1 Foldable charger for Apple devices with an iPhone Airpods and Apple Watch displayed

Honorable Mentions

We have tested several other multi-device wireless charging stations for Apple devices. Here are a few we liked:

  • Satechi 3-in-1 Magnetic Wireless Charging Stand for $120 : This 3-in-1 requires you to supply your own 20-watt power adapter ( this is a good one if you don't have one already), and it won't recharge your iPhone or Apple Watch at the fastest speeds possible. That's still totally fine if you usually only juice up your gadgets overnight. It's a little smaller than the Belkin, so it won't take too much room, and the aluminum build looks attractive (the iPhone mount is made of stainless steel). You can pop off the Apple Watch charger and take it on the go—just plug the USB-C end into any charger, power bank , or even laptop with the port to recharge your smartwatch.
  • Case-Mate Fuel 3-in-1 Foldable for $150 : Finished in a classy gray material, this 3-in-1 charges an iPhone in a case or any Qi smartphone, and it's easy to fold flat and pack in a bag. It also has a built-in Apple Watch charger and a spot for AirPods. A cable and 45-watt charger are included. I also tested the solid Case-Mate Fuel 4-in-1 ($150) , which is quite good, but the unnecessary LEDs and Fuel logo put me off.
  • iOttie Velox Duo for $60 : This was our 2-in-1 pick for a while. The black and gold combo looks great, the magnet is strong, and there’s a weighted base. On the downside, it only charges iPhones at up to 7.5 watts. The permanently attached USB-C cable is a good length, but you do have to provide your own adapter.
  • Twelve South HiRise 3 Wireless Charging Stand for $100 : Our previous compact pick, this 3-in-1 is a space saver. There's an angled MagSafe perch for your iPhone, a shelf up top for your Apple Watch, and a spot for your AirPods underneath. It's a compact design that makes it easy to glance at your iPhone, though this means you can't utilize the Nightstand mode of your Apple Watch. It comes with a 5-foot USB-C cable, but you do need to provide your own power adapter ( 20 watts or above ).
  • RapidX Boosta 5-in-1 Charging Stand for $50 : This is a lot like Anker’s MagGo 633. It’s a charging stand designed to charge a MagSafe Boosta battery pack (sold separately), which you can stick a MagSafe iPhone onto. You can also charge AirPods on the base, and there’s a spare USB-C port for something else, but I don’t understand why they call it 5-in-1.
  • RapidX Modula 5 Modular Wireless Charging System for $40 : This modular system was a great space saver on my last vacation. The pads slot together magnetically and offer up to 10-watt charging for phones (I also used one to charge my AirPods with the wireless charging case), and there’s a special pad for the Apple Watch with a puck that can lie flat or pop up to accommodate Nightstand mode.
  • Anker 623 MagGo 2-in-1 Wireless Charger for $50 : This cylinder-shaped charging station has a flip-up phone platform with space to charge AirPods on top. It’s compact, comes in three colors (I recommend purple), and has the cable and adapter you need in the box.
  • Courant Mag:2 Classics 2-in-1 Wireless Charger for $150 : It's way too expensive for what you get, but it's attractive and is made with fancy materials, like Italian-sourced leather. Attach your iPhone to the top MagSafe charger and you can put it in landscape or horizontal orientation. The base has another charger for your earbuds, though I was able to juice up another iPhone as well. Choose the Mag:2 Essentials for an equally luxurious linen material (and a lower price).
  • OtterBox 2-in-1 Charging Station with MagSafe for $130 : This charger combines an adjustable MagSafe pad for your iPhone or AirPods with a horizontal puck for your Apple Watch. It is solidly made but expensive, and I found it didn't work with every cable and adapter I tried (you have to supply an adapter).
  • ESR HaloLock 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with CryoBoost for $55 : Silly name aside, this is attractively priced and includes a power adapter and cable. You can turn off the light and fan when you’re trying to sleep. But it only charges iPhones at 7.5 watts, and the Apple Watch charger isn’t included. The 2-in-1 version minus the Apple Watch slot is $10 cheaper and looks better.
  • Andi Be Free 3-in-1 Charger for $100 : This is an elegant and space-saving design for a non-MagSafe charger—good for older iPhones. However, you don't get any fast charging capabilities for any devices.
  • Mophie Snap+ 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Stand for $95 : Another 3-in-1 that does the job, Mophie’s Snap+ has an adjustable stand for your iPhone, a space for AirPods, and a plastic ring to insert your own Apple Watch or Galaxy Smartwatch charger into. It works, but it feels and looks a bit cheap, especially when there’s nothing on it.

STM Goods ChargeTree Go charging station

Avoid These

Not every charger will be a winner. Here are the ones we didn't like.

  • STM Goods ChargeTree Go for $120 : This charging tree station folds flat and can charge a trio of Apple gadgets. But there’s no quick-charge support, my Apple Watch kept sliding out of place during the night, and there’s no adapter included. It’s not cheap either.
  • Excitrus Magnetic Wireless Charging Station for $30 : I didn't really like this charger, but it works fine and it's dirt cheap. You can charge your iPhone and AirPods on it and use the spare USB-A port at the back to plug in an Apple Watch charger (or something else). The magnet is a little weak (use a MagSafe case!), it has a pointless light-up ring, and the build quality is a little suspect. But with the cable and adapter included, it’s hard to beat the value.

Floodwaters officially shut down I-29 in Iowa. How long it will last and where to detour:

travel charger 2 in 1

Iowa Department of Transportation officials expect to reopen Interstate 29 next week after rising waters caused it to shut down in both directions on the west side of the state early Wednesday morning.

The rising Missouri River caused officials to close I-29 from 25th Street at the north edge of Council Bluffs to the I-29/880 interchange near Loveland. The portion of I-680 west of I-29 in Iowa also is closed.

Officials started the process of closing I-29 around midnight and were finished by 1 a.m., said Austin Yates, a DOT traffic operations engineer.

“Right now based on the current river level forecast we’re expecting water over the roads through Monday evening,” Yates said, but added re-opening could take longer depending on how much debris and damage is left behind.

“We’re hoping once the water recedes, we’ll open in one or two days,” Yates said.

More: Northwest Iowans work to save their homes as rivers overtop levees, force evacuations

He said they've seen encouraging reports from northwest Iowa as floodwaters start to recede after rivers reached historic levels over the last several days . The Missouri River at Omaha is expected to crest at moderate flood stage Saturday, according to the National Water Prediction Service.

Travelers should follow a signed detour that will start at the I-29/880 interchange near Loveland, continue east to the I-80/880 interchange, and then southwest on I-80 to Council Bluffs. If you are driving between Iowa and Nebraska, you should use I-80. Local traffic in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area should follow the signed detour.

Drivers are advised to not enter a water-covered roadway and not to travel around barricades or fencing.

The 5 simple steps to installing an EV charger at home

Vgajic // canva, a simple 5-step checklist to install an ev charger at home.

EV charger installation is a very broad and varied topic and, unfortunately, often one that lacks clear-cut answers. Every home is different and will likely require unique installation details, so the costs associated with setting up EV charging at home will vary. For many newer homes, installing an EV charger may cost just a few hundred dollars. But for many other homes, including older ones, the price of getting EV charging capability can easily run into the thousands.

Sounds expensive? Well, it can be. And most likely, that's your main motivator for installing an EV home charger yourself. Before you do, you should know that there are tax credits that can help alleviate the costs of the charger and installation. There is a federal tax credit that covers up to 30% of total charger and installation costs, up to $1,000. Additionally, there are often state-level — and sometimes even county- or city-level — credits that can be combined with the federal credit. Because of the hazards of working with electricity, many homeowners choose a professional EV home charger installer. But if you're still interested in installing your own EV charger at home, Edmunds can help with the step-by-step preparation process.

Step 1: Determine whether your home's amp service size is adequate

The first thing you should know is the size of the house's electrical service in amps. The minimum you will find in many older homes is 100-amp service and that's generally not sufficient for adding an EV charger to the home's electrical circuit. Consider 200-amp service as the minimum you will need to run an EV charger at home along with your refrigerator, washer and dryer, and heating and air-conditioning systems.

If you don't have at least 200-amp service, you will need an electrician to get more electricity flowing into the house, as well as probably upgrading the electrical panel that contains your home's circuit breakers. This is the aspect of home EV charger installation that can be very expensive — up to several thousands of dollars. Many older homes lack 200-amp service, so be sure to get at least a few quotes from electricians to find out what this potentially expensive work will cost.

Step 2: Choose the right charger

Right now, the most powerful home EV chargers are rated at 80 amps, and if you have a large electric SUV or pickup, such as a GMC Hummer EV or Ford F-150 Lightning, that's probably what you will want for overnight charging capability. For a compact or midsize EV, such as a Hyundai Kona Electric or Tesla Model Y, 40-50 amps will more than suffice for overnight charging. Check out our guide on how to get the best home charger for your plug-in car to help you determine the best EV home charging setup for your needs.

Step 3: Choose the location for the charger

When choosing the location for your home EV charger, there are many options. As long as your cord reaches your car, you have a multitude of places to select from. We recommend installing an EV charger indoors whenever possible, but because the unit and cord are water- and weather-resistant, installing outdoors doesn't have to be a deal-breaker.

However, be sure to consider the distance your charger is installed from the house's main circuit panel. The closer in proximity, the less wiring will need to be fed between the two, which means lower cost. Popular places to install an EV home charger are both inside and outside of the garage, in the driveway, or on the back wall of the property. Also, exercise common sense: Don't flaunt your charger in public view, if possible. Don't put yourself at risk of vandalization or theft.

Step 4: Install the charger

You will need to get 240-volt power to the charger, which can be accomplished either through a hardwired connection or via a NEMA 14-50 outlet — the kind your dryer is likely plugged into. A hardwired connection should be considered necessary for anything over 40 amps coming through the charger, and due to the batteries in many EVs only getting larger, it may be wise to go with a hardwired connection so that you can install a higher-power charger later if necessary.

Step 5: Inspection

Once it's installed, you should make an appointment with your local municipality to have the charger installation inspected to ensure it's up to code. This should be considered an essential step, not just for compliance with local laws but also to make sure the installation is safe. There is a lot of electricity coursing through your home charger setup, so ensuring the installation was done correctly and up to code should be considered a mandatory final step.

In conclusion

Home EV charging is absolutely the way to go — if your living situation is compatible. The cost of charging at home is pennies on the dollar compared to filling up with gasoline. Home charging is fundamental to keeping EV running costs significantly lower than for gas-powered cars; without it, running an EV by relying on public charging can be nearly as expensive as running a gasoline-powered vehicle.

Planning on traveling for the Fourth of July holiday? Here’s how to avoid the rush

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

Image

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.
