The 17 best Airbnbs in Maui for every style and budget

From beachside villas to luxe campervans, these are the finest Airbnb rentals in Maui to stay in

Ed Cunningham

Ask someone to describe a postcard-perfect island paradise and there’s a decent chance they’ll describe somewhere that sounds exactly like Maui . Hawaii ’s second-largest island has it all: from its huge number of idyllic beaches and vast crystalline Pacific waters to vast tropical forests and spectacular volcanic landforms. Ooooh, ahhhh.

And Maui is more than just its magnificent natural landscapes. The island is also home to loads of stuff to see and do , from tucking in at its  scrummy restaurants and gulping down delicious and exotic drinks at innovative craft beer bars to just chilling out at its uber-cool selection of  hotels and resorts .

The best way to experience Maui in all its glory is to stay in an Airbnb – and the rental site has plenty of incredible and unique options (not just ya standard room). Whether you want a gorgeous villa, cool apartment, or retro campervan, the island’s Airbnbs can be found all over its valleys, beaches, and population centers like Wailuku, Kihei and Kula. Here are our top picks of the coolest, most interesting Airbnbs in Maui. Make sure you have plenty of sun lotion and swimwear!

Picture the scene. You yawn, get out of bed, stretch, saunter through some sliding doors and there you have it: you’re literally above the clouds . That’s what’s on offer at this four-person upcountry house in Kula, which doesn’t just come with mind-melting views out over Maui’s rolling pastures but also its own pool and heated spa.

Best for:   sky-high inland retreats. Budget range? These insanely gorgeous skyline views will set you back a little, but it's worth every penny.  Rooms: 2 beds, 2.5 baths. Sleeps 4.

8.  The family-friendly apartment in Kihei

The family-friendly apartment in Kihei

If you want your Maui break to be as stress-free as possible, look no further than this Kihei apartment. On the ground floor (meaning no lugging of luggage up any stairs), it also comes with extras like snorkel gear, beach umbrellas and a BBQ. On top of the tasteful décor and clean finish, it’s the ‘Airbnb Plus’ range so you know it's the real deal.

Best for:   families hunting for maximum convenience. Budget range? On the spenny end, but it comes with incredible perks like the spa and pool  (four nights minimum). Rooms:   2 beds, 2 baths. Sleeps 6.

9.  The beachside condo in Kihei

The beachside condo in Kihei

Sat serenely in the shade of a banyan tree, this spacious little apartment is a tranquil hideaway in central Kihei. It features a secluded courtyard ideal for slow mornings spent soaking in the rays and relaxation. The apartment’s key draw, however, is its proximity to the ocean – Waipuilani beach is just over the street.

Best for:   surfers.

Budget range?  Pretty decent for a few days at this humble, ocean-inspired abode.

Rooms: 1 bed, 1 bath. Sleeps 4.

10.  The smart townhouse in Lahaina

The smart townhouse in Lahaina

Just steps away from Kahana beach, this clean and minimalist townhouse is simply very, very pleasant. Each of the three bedrooms has high ceilings with exposed vaults, while the rest of the rental boasts a tiki bar, a selection of beach gear and access to a tennis court.

Best for:   small, swish groups. Budget range?  A pretty affordable and cozy option for a group of pals.  Rooms: 3 beds, 1.5 baths. Sleeps 8.

11.  The designer villa in Makena

The designer villa in Makena

In the southern Maui town of Makena, this villa is just a few minutes’ walk from Makena Beach – one of the island’s finest stretches of sand. But, to be honest, the real attraction here is the villa itself. From its circular cabana bar and open-plan kitchen to the panoramic views from the pool, patio and jacuzzi, this is a four-bed (and eight-guest) pad with serious design flair.

Best for:   design-appreciative groups. Budget range?  Well worth the kidney.  Rooms: 4 beds, 4 baths. Sleeps 8.

12.  The stripped-back studio in Wailuku

The stripped-back studio in Wailuku

Once you’re over the fact that the pastel blue paintwork is cute as heck (although it most certainly is), this hideaway in Wailuku is ideal for a simple, stripped-back couples’ getaway. Essentially cleverly designed converted garage, this rental packs a bedroom, lounge area, washroom and kitchen into a weeny space. Make sure to make use of the glorious outdoor Balian shower.

Best for:   cute, compact convenience. Budget range?  In the mid-to-high ranges for a real taste of island living.  Rooms: 1 bed, 1 bath. Sleeps 2.

13.  The view-centric loft in Hana

The view-centric loft in Hana

Nope, that isn’t a window-sized poster of the ideal Pacific Ocean view: that’s the actual vista from this loft in Hana Bay. Finished in homely teak, the rental has two queen beds and pretty much all the amenities you could need for a trip exploring Maui’s most unspoiled natural areas. It’s also within easy distance of waterfalls, beaches and tropical rainforest.

Best for:   picture-postcard views. Budget range? In the mid-ranges for a pleasant stay.   Rooms: 1 bed, 1 bath. Sleeps 4.

14.  The romantic bungalow in Hana

The romantic bungalow in Hana

Push through vegetation that includes bamboo, banana trees, ferns and papaya trees to find the Hamoa Bay Bungalow, which is just outside Hana’s main town. The surrounding tropical plants plunge you into Maui’s tropical ecosystem, but they also have one other purpose – they totally shield you from the outside world and make this a very secluded and romantic stay indeed.

Best for:   a romantic, nature-loving escape. Budget range?  Consider it a teeny splurge for a well-deserved nature retreat. Rooms: 1 bed, 1 bath. Sleeps 2.

15.  The studio in Napili Ridge

The studio in Napili Ridge

There’s not much space in Indigo Cottage for anything other than you and your special someone... and that’s all part of its charm. In Napili Ridge and within a short walk of a bunch of restaurants and beaches (particularly Napili Bay), the only downside to this one is that it isn’t air-conditioned – so you’ll need to make the most of Maui’s natural breeziness.

Best for:   cozy couples. Budget range? Decently priced for being just minutes from the bay. Rooms:  1 bed, 1 bath. Sleeps 2.

16.  The electic guesthouse on a working farm in Kula

The electic guesthouse on a working farm in Kula

Maui might have a rep for heat-blasted beaches but the island also boasts much cooler (and equally beautiful) upland regions. You’ll find this rental in one of those areas, sitting 3,300 feet above sea level on a working fiber farm near Kula. Alpacas and Angora rabbits roam the land, while the cottage itself has plenty of space for two, its own private patio – with outdoor fireplace – and 360-degree views of both the ocean and nearby summit.

Best for : a quiet and cool couples’ escape. Budget range?  It's on the higher end of the bargain for this beautiful cottage stay (three nights minimum). Rooms: 1 bed, 1 bath. Sleeps 2.

17.  The modern cottage in Wailuku

The modern cottage in Wailuku

Newly renovated, this modern cottage Airbnb is set in an old-Hawaii-style home, tucked away in the residential dream of Wailuku Town. It's in the perfect location for exploring the Island, and with space for four guests to sleep, it makes for a great Airbnb to get the girls round and have a little trip together, reconnect and all that. There's a decked-out kitchenette for midnight snacks and air conditioning to make the heat bearable. A little slice of heaven, TBH.

Best for:  gal pals on a trip together. Budget range:   A decent price for a secluded spot with private parking. Rooms: 1 bed, 1 bath. Sleeps 4.

While Maui isn’t your typical budget trip destination, there are plenty of accommodation choices on Airbnb that cater to all types of travellers and budgets.

Many places to stay in Hawaii have a lanai which is a roofed veranda or balcony. These are important living spaces in most Hawaiian homes. Why wouldn’t you want to maximize time in the fresh air taking in tropical views?

It’s also important that a home has AC, however,  a lot  of locals prefer to sit out on the lanai and open up the windows at night to enjoy the cooler evening breeze. So it’s not uncommon to find homes without air conditioning.

Most homes in Maui come with free parking, WiFi and all the amenities you would need for a comfortable stay. There are three main types of Airbnbs that dominate the listings for properties in Kauai, and each offers something a little different, so let’s take a look at them…

airbnb travel to maui

Private rooms are exactly what they say on the tin. They are rooms in a shared house with the house owner or other travellers. You will have your own room, with a comfy bed and a place to put your things. You’ll have access to shared areas such as kitchens and living areas.

A condo is a building divided into separate apartments. They have common areas like pools, BBQs, and gyms that are accessible to all guests. These are really common in the cities in Maui and generally in built-up areas. Apartments vary in size, although you can expect the full comfort of a house with a resort-like feel.

If you’re looking for a luxurious Airbnb in Maui, a villa is the way to go. These places are a bit more on the fancy side and often have features like pools, Jacuzzis, and insane views to match. Heck, some even have home cinemas! Villas are suitable for large groups of people (though no one is stopping you from booking it just for yourself).

Now you know what to expect from Airbnbs in Maui, it’s time to take a look at my top picks!

Studio in Maui Banyan | Overall Best Value Airbnb in Maui

Studio in Maui Banyan

Looking for the perfect combination of value and style, this ocean view condo has it all. Then check out this awesome vacation rental in Kihei . It’s unquestionably one of the best Airbnbs in Maui!

One of the best aspects of this awesome one bedroom condo is that it offers direct access to the beach, plus you have all the resort amenities such as an outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and tennis court. Plus you are within walking distance of Sugar Beach and other top attractions.

If you’re planning to explore the island by car when you arrive, you’ll be pleased to know that this awesome apartment also comes with free parking. It’s also fab for couples as it comes with a queen bed. A really romantic hideaway!

Hakuna Matata Double Room | Best Budget Airbnb in Maui

Hakuna Matata Double Room, Maui

If there’s one thing that can be a bit problematic about Maui, it’s cost. It’s really tricky to find budget accommodation on the island. However, if you really search you can!

The best Airbnb in Maui for travellers on a budget is actually in a local hostel – but don’t let that put you off. You still have your own private space as there are two single beds here – perfect if you’re travelling solo or with a buddy!

The clincher with this place isn’t that or the social environment though – it’s that you can use loads of equipment for water sports and relaxing on the beach, such as beach chairs, kayaks and paddleboards, all for free. That’ll save you a whole wad of cash!

audy on top of a mountain in japan with the osprey aether

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

Lahaina Oceanfront Estate | Over the Top Luxury Airbnb in Maui

Lahaina Oceanfront Estate, Maui

Like I said, there are luxury options here. However, this vacation rental in Maui is the daddy of them all! It’s one of the best Airbnbs in Maui, period.

However, you’ll have to have some serious cash to bag this place. Well, maybe you won’t – just get 14 of your mates to foot the bill!

Then decide what you’re going to take advantage of first. The private hot tub? Or how about the pool? Or will you just chill in the exquisitely decorated living and dining areas? Or how about you kick back and enjoy the views of the West Maui Mountains.

Private Room near The Beach | Perfect Maui Airbnb for Solo Travellers

Private room near the beach, Maui

Travelling solo to Maui? Perhaps it’s not the best idea to get a place all to yourself. After all, a private room in a house means that the owners can help you with their recommendations of all the great stuff to do in Hawaii !

It’s also a good idea to get one in a busy area with lots of tourist attractions so that you can easily make friends.

Luckily for you, this cosy ohana is right by Baby Beach and some of West Maui’s best restaurants and nightlife. This is easily one of the best Maui homestays!

Private Room at Animal Refuge | Perfect Short Term Airbnb in Maui for Digital Nomads

airbnb travel to maui

Maui’s internet access can be a little patchy, which isn’t ideal if you’re a digital nomad. However, this great private room has unlimited internet access for 24 hours a day. So, if you have a brainwave at 4 am, you don’t have to wait!

The best part of staying at this vacation rental in Lahaina though is that it’s a tortoise and bird refuge. In fact, there are over 70 animals on sites ranging from dogs to cats to tortoises to chickens!

Don’t worry though – none of them will find their way into your spacious bedroom!

Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

Here are a few more of my favorite Airbnbs in Maui!

Seashell Cabana | Best Airbnb in Maui for Nightlife

Seashell Cabana, Maui

Just a short walk from the centre of Maui’s nightlife mecca , Lahaina, you can collapse into this awesome cabana. At the end of your night out, you can choose to sleep off those pina coladas either in the king bed or in a hammock.

The following day, jump into one of three swimming pools – so soothing when you’re hungover!

There are loads of facilities in this lush gated property, including a tennis court and loads of rental equipment if you want to try boogie boarding or snorkelling. So, rather than just a great Maui Airbnb for nightlife, it really is an all-rounder!

Tropical Bamboo Oasis | Best Airbnb in Maui for Couples

Tropical Bamboo Oasis

Maui has some of the coolest mountain ranges in the United States. It’s also tricky to find places to stay in the island’s mountains and national parks. However, this awesome jungle villa in Haiku-Pauwela gives you the best of nature in East Maui.

And what could be more romantic than finding somewhere with your other half than in a private bamboo house with its own private outdoor pool, hot tub and ocean views?

Whether you want to watch the sunrise from the outdoor patio or just listen to the sound of the birds from the lanai, all of it is possible with this incredible and unusual Airbnb!

Shared Ocean View Condo | Best Homestay in Maui

Shared Ocean View Condo

Want to get a true slice of island life? Then look no further than this Maui homestay right opposite the beach in Lahaina.

Your host will be on hand to answer any questions and give you plenty of recommendations for making the most of your time in paradise.

Don’t worry about privacy, you still have your own room and own private bathroom. You’ll only share the living area, kitchen and onsite resort facilities. There is no air conditioning, but there is a ceiling fan if you need it.

What’s that? You’d prefer the beach? Well, it’s a good job that there’s one just over the road from this ocean view condo then!

Home near Lahaina’s Restaurants | Amazing Luxury Airbnb in Maui

airbnb travel to maui

There are some seriously luxurious properties on the island, so it was really hard for me to pick one! However, after much deliberation, I went for this awesome villa in Maui .

It’s not cheap, but luxury never is! You do get your money’s worth though – the location is second to none and the light and airy interior might just make you think twice about spending all your time outdoors!

The super hosts who own the property live right nearby and can help you with any concerns you might have during your stay.

Don’t miss the gorgeous sunsets from here!

Oceanfront House in Hana | Best Airbnb in Maui for Families

Oceanfront House in Hana

Got the whole family in tow? Check out this Maui Airbnb located in the Hana neighborhood . This is the adventure capital of the North shore of Maui and is where you and the family can enjoy some epic surfing, hiking and learning about traditional Hawaii culture.

This ocean front property can sleep up to eight guests and has over 1 acre of land to explore. Bask in the hot tub under the stars, or from the spacious living area with floor to ceiling windows. You are surrounded by lush jungle, so make sure to keep your eyes out for a parrot or two.

And if you want some epic bonding time, then why not take advantage of the fully equipped kitchen?!

Puamana Townhome | Best Airbnb in Maui for a Group of Friends

Puamana Townhome with free parking, Maui

This vacation rental can comfortably accommodate 6 guests, so it’s the perfect Maui Airbnb for a big group of friends.

It’s located in a 30 acre gated community, with access to snorkeling, swimming, and a whole load of other activities on the beach that’s just steps from your front door.

If you don’t want to venture out of the gated community that this is part of, you can always enjoy the clubhouse, the pool, and the tennis courts. Or just chill in the awesome living spaces!

Cute Cottage with Pool | Best Airbnb in Kaanapali

Cute Cottage with Pool, Maui

Kaanapali is one of the island’s hotspots, so there’s no way you’ll want to miss out on this awesome rental in Maui. This would be great for a couples’ Maui vacation as there’s not just one king bed, but two!

Curl up with your significant other and your best friends and watch a movie on the 55 inch TV with a delicious meal you’ve prepared in the kitchen and served on the awesome dinnerware!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention it’s just 5 minutes from the world-famous Kaanapali Beach! If you’re were struggling to find a place to stay in Kaanapali , you’re not now!

Ocean Front Resort | Best Resort in Kaanapali

Ocean front resort, Maui

There are so many awesome apartments in Kaanapali, that I couldn’t stop at just one. Here’s another of my favourite vacation rentals in Maui’s most popular spots!

The spacious balcony is a great spot for breakfast or lunch, or a romantic dinner if you want to watch a stunning Hawaiian sunset! There’s wifi and a gym too, so you could download your favourite playlist from Spotify before pumping some iron!

Since it’s on a resort, you’ll feel like you’re staying in a hotel room but with wayyyy more perks!

Dream Vacation Condo | Top Value Airbnb in Lahaina

Dream Vacation Condo, Maui

Okay, I KNOW you’ve seen a lot of apartments in Lahaina, but I’ve got just one more for you to peruse before I disappear.

There’s space for up to 6 people here and the apartment boasts a huge living room with a massive flat screen TV – just like the one in the master bedroom!

In fact, there’s even an outside TV and you can enjoy a meal in front of it!

Oceanfront Condo | Another Top Homestay in Maui

Shared condo one block from ocean, Maui

Another of the best homestays in Maui is this awesome Beach House, just a hop, skip, and a jump from Lahaina’s famous Front Street.

Yes, you have a private room with space for two, but you’re going to want to spend some time in the gardenesque yard. There are several plants, trees, and flowers, and it’s a really relaxing place to be!

The dining and kitchen area is cool too, perfect for cooking your own meals – but to be honest, you won’t want to spend too long indoors when you’ve got that gorgeous beach just steps away!

Here’s what people usually ask us when they look for vacation homes in Maui.

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for an Airbnb stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

Earplugs

Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.

nomatic_laundry_bag

Hanging Laundry Bag

Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.

Sea To Summit Micro Towel

Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.

Monopoly Deal

Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.

Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Don’t Forget Your Maui Travel Insurance

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Julie also went above and beyond to make our stay even better than we could of expected, adding a few extra touches for our wedding night. Would definitely recommend Julie and her property!”

Just inland from rock shores, there’s plenty to be discovered offsite as well, as if an entire vacation on the Airbnb’s property isn’t satisfying enough.

One of our favorite treehouses that you can book on Airbnb, this spot sits on 15-foot stilts in the rainforest. It has one bedroom with amazing views, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. The views of the surrounding trees can also be enjoyed from the 360-degree lanai (or covered porch), the hanging bed suspended beneath the treehouse, and even the bathroom, which features Jalousie windows in the shower. Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath Top amenities: Outdoor swing, hammock, Jacuzzi for the taking

This Airbnb is a petite studio, yet fits a kitchen (complete with full-size appliances), bedroom, and bathroom inside. You'll want to spend most of your time outdoors when staying at this tiny house on stilts, either relaxing on the wrap-around patio, napping in the hammock that hangs below the house, or soaking in the private hot tub. This isn't the spot for remote meetings (the Wi-Fi is a bit spotty, according to past guests), but it is the place for total relaxation, thanks to the white noise of the surrounding coqui frogs.

airbnb travel to maui

Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities: Lush one-acre yard, vaulted ceilings, a remarkable panoramic window

On the Big Island’s northern end, this private upcountry home is unbelievably affordable for what it offers. Impeccably styled with full-wall windows overlooking infinite green pastures, it’s the kind of living space that could hold you hostage for eternity as you watch movies all morning in the California King bed, complete a puzzle in the main room, or cook up a Hawaiian feast in the luxury kitchen to enjoy out on the deck. When the cool island mist retreats, venture out into the brisk and mountainous terrain—or grab some of the included beach gear and embark on a coastal adventure along any of the northern shores. It may not be the warmest location in all of Hawaii, but it’s certainly a scenic one that’ll make leaving difficult.

Bed & bath: Studio, 1 bath Top amenities: Soaking tub surrounded by windows, two-story balcony with a spiral staircase

Thanks to its penthouse location, wall of sliding doors that open to an outdoor dining area, and private rooftop, this studio apartment almost feels like a treehouse. With one of the best bedroom views from any Airbnb we've seen , this treehouse is set 15 feet above the ground with a network of rooms spread out among the trees. It's peak indoor-outdoor living, with an open-air kitchen and ocean-facing bedroom, both with uninterrupted nature views. There's also a sauna and accompanying cold shower, plus a private hot tub on the ground level. And as far as cooking, there’s a chicken coop onsite that provides fresh eggs for breakfast. The location isn't bad either, with some of the island's best beaches just 20 minutes away. It's an even shorter drive to lush hikes in the Pu'u Wa'awa'a State Forest Reserve.

Bed & bath: 3 bedrooms, 3.5 baths Top amenities: Infinity pool, pool table, sand volleyball courts

This was probably the last place you thought you'd find a Frank Lloyd Wright house , but it all makes sense when you find out that this three-bedroom vacation home was originally planned for the Cornwell family in Pennsylvania in the 1950s. It wasn't actually built until 1995, under the direction of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and features reproductions of the famed architect's furniture designs and his signature Cherokee red concrete floors. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the home look out over the Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai volcanoes —but the best view is from the lava-rock hot tub, which overlooks a stream. If you're a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, this is a can't-miss. (If you're looking for the architect's other work in the state, Maui's King Kamehameha golf clubhouse was inspired by Wright's abandoned design for Marilyn Monroe's 1950s home.)

Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath Top amenities: Communal lanai, lava fields, peaceful isolation

Custom-built tiny homes are a cornerstone of Hawaii tourism, creating experiences as one-of-a-kind as the island state itself. This particular home is made up of two “pods” connected by an open-air patio that doubles as a breezy, string light–adorned communal space. Plopped atop expansive lava rock, the so-called Ohana House includes a living room and kitchen on one side, with a bathroom and modern bedrooms on the other. On daytime excursions, meander into nearby Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, visit the local farmer’s market, see the remarkable Hōlei sea arch, and lie out at Kehena Black Sand Beach. There’s no shortage of entertainment in the quaint Pāhoa area, and this Airbnb is a perfect home base.

The saltwater infinity pool and view from this resort-style home on the Big Island's western coast will take your breath away. But that isn't the only reason to book this two-bedroom. The home features an open-plan living room with eight-foot pocket doors for an indoor-outdoor flow, a luxe kitchen stocked with cooking essentials, and bedrooms with stunning views and spa-like bathrooms . If you manage to drag yourself away from the house (which was built by the same people behind the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai ), it's just a 10-minute drive to the beach and, for Java fanatics, it's even less of a drive to the Kona Coffee Living History Farm. The hosts of the Airbnb also rent out their SUV on Turo , a car share company , and will have it ready at the airport when you arrive, meaning this listing really is a one-stop shop for your vacation.

If you’re okay with heights, climb up into this renowned treehouse—resting atop tall, tall stilts—for an experience unlike any other in Kauai. The property is divided into two spaces: the main home (with bedrooms and comfy living rooms looking out over the dense trees) and an outdoor lounge area (with a shaded hot tub and uncovered tanning chairs). Despite its elevation, the home manages to have fancy and functioning appliances, including a full kitchen, laundry, TV, and Wi-Fi. The ground level includes parking spaces and a lawn walled in by rainforest.

Guests staying here will have full access to the home's bikes, kayak, paddleboards, and surfboards, so you won't have to spend time—or money—at the gear shop. Hiking paths to the beach and Queen's Bath tidepools are within walking distance, and Hanalei Bay is a short drive away.

The three-bedroom Airbnb Plus features a large, open living and dining room with views of the bay, which leads into a well-equipped kitchen fit for a chef. The bedrooms are filled with natural light and the primary has its own private balcony. Also private is the saltwater pool, complete with loungers, should that nearby beach feel too crowded.

Wi-Fi and cell service are spotty but not completely out of the question; you're in the rainforest with incredible, lush mountain views, but Hanalei is just 15 minutes away; and you have access to a full kitchen with all the appliances you need to cook at home. The immaculate kitchen and dining room are rivaled only by the outdoor deck, featuring a grill and a sparkling, square pool set against the backdrop of tropical trees (the primary bedroom has doors that open out to the pool, as well). Each bedroom comes with a ceiling fan to keep guests cool on warmer days, and enough natural light to feel connected to the surrounding scenery at all times.

The interiors are carefully thought out and the backyard really shines: A built-in grill and dining area, a pergola-covered lounging space, a Jacuzzi, an outdoor shower, and a star-gazing telescope fill up the space. The amenities of the home are too plentiful to be listed in full—but the 300+ property photos and detailed room-by-room descriptions in the Airbnb listing will show you exactly what to expect.

Bed & bath: 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths Top amenities: Indoor-outdoor poolside bar, oceanfront lawn, covered backyard dining area

Talk about luxury. Fit for 12 guests, this professionally managed Oahu mansion is one of the most creatively designed homes in existence (okay, we know that's a dramatic proclamation but stay with us) and comes with every amenity imaginable. Prepare meals for the crew in the skylit kitchen to be enjoyed in the large luau-compatible backyard. After setting up some lawn games and getting a tan, you can go for a dip in the wrap-around pool, which begins outdoors and dumps off in the master bathroom, right by the shower. With six bedrooms and six-and-a-half baths total, the space deserves an architectural gold medal, featuring panoramic views of Diamond Head, Koko Head, Waikiki, and weekly Friday night fireworks shows. It also sits along its own calm shoreline, with lounge chairs along the waterline. Of course, it’s also on the outskirts of the state’s capital and cultural hub, giving guests prime access to all the activities Oahu has to offer. If you gather a group big enough to occupy the home, the hefty price tag becomes much more doable—and it’s certainly worth the splurge.

While the look back at this three-bedroom house, with its private stretch of sand, lanai, and steps that lead directly into the ocean, all in the shadow of the Kualoa range, is impressive, it's the view out across the water that guests won't soon forget. The home faces Mokoli'i, an islet made of cooled lava just offshore, and views of the natural phenomenon through the large picture windows at sunrise are particularly stunning. The interior is perfect for two families of four: One bedroom is filled with two large bunk beds, while the other two bedrooms feature a double and a king. A stay here is probably best for older, more responsible kids—think middle school and up—considering the backyard's drop into the water.

Updated: Maui Travel Must Remain On Hold For Now

Updated 8/11 at 1 am. Our focus, love, and aloha are with the island of Maui. Understandably, the island is in crisis management mode given the still unfolding magnitude of the devastation after the fires.

We know many of you love Maui and have long-awaited plans to visit. You are asking questions about what to do in the short term, how long this crisis could endure, and how much it does and will impact other parts of Maui in the future. Good questions but still few answers today. Here’s what we know for now, we will continue to update this information.

First, Maui, in many ways, has very limited infrastructure. So to look at the fires as being isolated to Lahaina, for example, doesn’t take that fact into account; the whole island is greatly affected. Examples are medical care, service providers, equipment, first responders, and much more. That infrastructure is responsible for the entire island and simply needs time for recovery and reset.

Second, the island and state still need time to assess the damage after the fires in order to find out how quickly to move forward. Tourism is vital to Maui, and most hotels and condos were not damaged.

Our suggestions on how to plan Maui vacations in the short term.

If you have a Maui trip planned after August, excluding Kaanapali resorts and West Maui, we suggest you consider keeping those plans for now, as more will be revealed over the next few weeks. Most of Maui is accessible, and it’s a matter of getting island-wide infrastructure normalized in order to receive visitors once again.

If you have trip plans beyond August for West Maui (including Kaanapali), we suggest checking with your airline and hotel/vacation rental about cancellation policies since the State of Hawaii is clearly asking visitors not to come, and the surrounding infrastructure is in ruins.

If you are staying elsewhere on Maui, for example, Wailea or Kihei, check directly with the property.

Regarding vacation rentals, Airbnb and VRBO have different policies in place. “Parts of Maui” are covered by Airbnb for full refunds. VRBO is letting hosts cancel without impacting their ratings, but again, it’s up to the host to decide. Let us know what you are finding.

How long will the crisis endure in West Maui?

All of Lahaina will need to be rebuilt and that will take years. That leaves the Kaanapali resort area with Kihei, an hour away, as the nearest town. Reports are that the famous Banyan tree in Lahaina was severely burned but may survive, which may also stand as a testament to the strength of Maui and her people.

Kaanapali resorts are also undamaged, but the road to them is closed, and those evacuated had to leave their rental cars and much of their personal belongings behind, which will take time to sort out logistically. Power needs to be restored to all of West Maui, which will not be done quickly, and complete restoration of cell phone coverage too, which right now is minimal (although we have at last been able to reach people as of Thursday). We are also wondering if some hotel rooms will be needed by residents who lost their homes. Again, this all needs time to get sorted out and the situation remains extremely fluid as of Friday morning.

We spoke with a friend in Lahaina Thursday whose home burned down.

He lost his residence of thirty years while he and his wife barely escaped as the house burned. Police had told him they did not believe there would be any problem; they were not notified to evacuate and were unprepared when the gusts of 80+ miles per hour changed directions suddenly. He is now sleeping in his car while his wife has been hospitalized. Countless other stories like this are being told, which adds a personal face to this enormous and unfathomable disaster.

We are planning to come to Mauii in the middle of September despite the terrible disaster. We have already paid for airfare and our place at Maui Ocean Club and offered our place for the week in an exchange for another Island another date but they did not budge. What can I bring with me that would be helpful and most useful. I feel heartbroken about this terrible disaster happened to this beautiful island

We have reservations in Kahana for the end of November. The resort does not know whether or not we will be able to travel there at that time. We want to support Maui with our purchasing but we also want to respect the wishes of the people there. Not sure what to think at this point.

We have a reservation in the Kihei area from 3 Sept. I know the devastation that has been cause by the fires, especially around Lahaina and do not want cause any problems for the people of Maui at this time. Could you please advise me if it is possible to travel to Kihei at that time. I also realise that tourism is one of the main incomes of the people of Maui and if our visiting might be of some benefit. your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

regards, Ian F

Yes, Kihei is fine so it is totally up to your discretion.

Do no refund policies apply in situations where the resort is not accepting guests due to the fires?

If the resort can’t accommodate you on the contractual basis you agreed to, some remedy should be available to you via the resort or your credit card. That’s different than it being physically available and you choosing not to go for a variety of reasons.

Hello, I have plans to stay at the Hyatt regency Maui the first week in October. Should we consider canceling?

Sleep like a Prince at Airbnb’s Purple Rain house in Minneapolis

Airbnb introduces the newly restored Purple Rain house, a tribute to Prince’s musical genius and the movie and song’s 40th anniversary

purple rain prince house airbnb

Airbnb is paying tribute to the musical genius of Prince with a chance to stay in the newly restored Purple Rain house, celebrating the film and song’s 40th anniversary. It’s the latest in a series of high-profile collaborations from the vacation rental giant, such as with Mathieu Lehanneur , designer of the Paris Olympic torch, who turned Musée D’Orsay’s clock room into an Airbnb, and last year’s Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse experience hosted by Ken.

Airbnb introduces Prince’s Purple Rain house

purple rain prince house airbnb

The Purple Rain house provides an immersive experience that serves as a nostalgic homage to the 1980s cult classic and features elements from the original set design, unreleased tracks and memorabilia from Prince’s personal collection. The Minneapolis house, an authentic tribute to the American singer’s hometown, will be available for 25 exclusive one-night stays, each priced at just $7 per person – a nod to Prince’s favourite number.

‘We were lucky enough to be a part of the music scene in Minneapolis during such a pivotal era for rock music, playing with Prince in one of the most successful bands of our generation and starring alongside him in the Purple Rain film,’ say Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman – aka musical duo Wendy & Lisa, Prince’s chief collaborators – who are hosts of the experience.

purple rain prince house airbnb

Inside, guests are invited to indulge in a spa that nods to the music video for ‘When Doves Cry’, or explore a closet brimming with Prince’s most fabled outfits – behind glass, so available solely for admiration. For those looking to embrace their inner artist, a selection of vibrant 1980s-inspired garments, complete with hair, accessories and eye make-up, is included. Downstairs, the decor boasts a characteristic purple velvet wallpaper, complemented by a vintage 1980s stereo preloaded with the very songs that inspired the film's protagonist, The Kid.

purple rain prince house airbnb

The Muse lounge features a piano, drums and a guitar, while The Kid’s bedroom is decked out to reflect the movie, complete with Prince’s personal tape collection, which includes one of his demo recordings. Wendy & Lisa claim that the highlight of the house is a ‘secret space’: to gain entry, guests must attempt to activate the hidden door; once inside, a game of clues heralds the chance to win exclusive rewards.

purple rain prince house airbnb

‘The Purple Rain house stands as a tribute to our dear friend Prince, the timeless character he brought to life, and the lasting impact he continues to have. We hope the space gives fans a glimpse into the eclectic world Prince created, and visitors walk away feeling a little bit closer to him as an artist and person,’ remark the hosts.

Prince’s Purple Rain house is available to view now on Airbnb, and a chance to book will open from 2 until 6 October 2024, airbnb.com

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia

airbnb travel to maui

Trans-Siberian heritage

Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.

In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays.

Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.

The cultural center of Siberia

The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.

The large Siberian sea and ligers

Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .

Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.

Siberian Silicon Valley

Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.

For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .

Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.

Memento Mori

Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of  "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.

Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings.

Novosibirsk underground

airbnb travel to maui

Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.

The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey.

Where to stay

There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.
