Daniel Vineyards sits on 192 acres of property nestled in the scenic Appalachian Mountains, which provides guests with jaw-dropping views. Drive a little over an hour to Summersville where you’ll find the unique Kirkwood Winery and Isaiah Morgan Distillery . Located in the rural valley in the heart of the state, Kirkwood Winery invites you to “enjoy a taste of the mountains” when you stop by for a tasting or a tour. Chestnut Ridge Winery

Your next stop is the scenic Chestnut Ridge Winery, located in the town of Spencer. Here, you can try over 20 different types of wines that vary from traditional European style, semi-dry and semi-sweet dry wines. The winery’s deck is the perfect place to sit back and relax while enjoying the amazing drinks and beautiful views surrounding you.

Stone Road Vineyard

Make the short one-hour drive from Chestnut Ridge Winery to Stone Road Vineyard in Elizabeth. Stone Road Vineyard is family-owned and makes 14 handcrafted red and white varieties and blended wines. Stone Road Vineyard gives way to spanning, panoramic views of Wood, Wirt and Jackson counties.

WineTree Vineyards

Lucky for you, the next winery is only a short 30-minute drive. Take a tour at WineTree Vineyards in Vienna to see how they grow grapes, ferment and bottle their wines. Try one of their award-winning dry white and red wines like their Chardonnay that is a crisp, nicely balanced wine with delicate aromas of ripe apricot, pear and apple.

Lambert’s Vintage Winery

Head to the beautiful Mountain Lakes region of the state and stop at Lambert’s Vintage Winery in Weston. Unwind in a rocking chair made from hand-cut West Virginia stones as you taste exquisite flavors that have been in the making since 1993. This property also makes a great location for hosting weddings and events and will soon be serving up pizzas in the brand new wood fired oven.

Next up is the beautiful Batton Hollow Winery in Lost Creek. West-Whitehill Winery

The three-hour trek to West-Whitehill Winery in Moorfield takes travelers throughout the stunning Potomac Highlands region of the state, make the drive worth all the while. Founded in 1981, West-Whitehill Winery makes wines from French-American hybrid varietals such as Chambourcin, Seyval, Aurore and Vidal. Don’t forget to try the Highland Mist Wine, which is a favorite among many.

Potomac Highland Winery

Stay in the Potomac Highlands region, where you’ll find your next winery just 55 minutes away in Keyser. Founded in 1992, Potomac Highland Winery is a winery known for producing fine table wines. The owners still oversee each aspect of production from the harvesting of the grapes to the final bottling of the wine. For red wine lovers, try their Meritage, Pinot Noir, Chambourcin, Chancellor or Seyval Blush. For white wine lovers, try their Chardonnay, Riesling or Seyval Blanc.

Kirkwood Winery has a rich history as the first winery in Nicholas County, located in the heart of the West Virginia mountains. Our story has soul, our site has scenery, and our team has passion.

It took perseverance to establish the vineyard you see today. The original vineyard was planted in 1984, only to be lost to a harsh winter and drought shortly after. Determined to succeed, the vineyards were replanted—and expanded—to produce over 10,000 gallons of wine annually. The old family oak press featured on our original label has been used since trial production first began almost two decades ago.

An Appalachian tradition turns legal

Small batches of Corn Whiskey, crafted beyond the watchful eyes of ‘revenuers’, are part of the lore of the region. Rodney Facemire obtained the license for the nation’s smallest still in 2002. Isaiah Morgan products were available in state-licensed spirits retailers but couldn’t be sold at the site of their creation, disappointing many tourists. Rodney conceived the vision of mini-distilleries, and formed a team of government and business leaders and created what can become a new industry for the state.

Today tourists can observe the crafting of the Southern Moon, Bourbon, Rye, and Grappa at the distillery and purchase a souvenir of their personal glimpse of mountain history and culture.

No visit to the area can be considered complete without a visit to this historic site. 50ml and 750ml Bottles of Southern Moon, Rye Bourbon, and Grappa spirits can be purchased on-site!

Lambert's Winery - Weston, WV

"It stands as a diminutive, Gothic looking structure on a hillside surrounded by a vineyard." The winery is constructed from hand cut stones gathered from various parts of West Virginia. Some weighing as much as 3,000 pounds. The doors are designed of solid two by fours on edge, with a rounded top. A comfortably furnished tasting room welcomes visitors as they enter. A 3-inch thick bar top, cut in the 1950's in Canada, is set up in one corner. Behind the bar, a mantle and mirror top the sink. Also in the tasting room is a raised television in the corner opposite the bar. A fireplace is surrounded by three rocking chairs and shelves containing West Virginia pottery that is for sale. Behind the tasting room is a racking room, storage area, and a cooling room. Jim & Debbie Lambert would like to extend a personal invitation to come and tour our Winery and see for yourself why we are so proud of our work. Call the Winery at (304)269-4903.

Wines of west virginia.

Despite the variety of terrain in West Virginia , its wines share at least two qualities. They're produced by small, family-owned wineries, and vintners use fruits harvested in isolated microclimates -- fed by fresh air and clear streams and located far from sources of heavy industrial pollution.

West Virginia's winery regions are generally divided into thirds -- the low hills of the valley of the Ohio River in the west, the highlands of the Allegheny Mountains in the south (the northern Alleghenies are too cool to support grape growing), and the valleys of the Potomac River and its branches in the east. The Allegheny Mountains in the north exceed 4,000 feet in elevation and are too cold to produce viable harvests, though wine growing has been attempted in its valley areas.

The soils of the Mountain State are also changeful, varying from moderate in the west, where the geology is largely clay and shale, to acidic in the central mountains, where sandstone and coal strata occur, to basic in the eastern valleys, where thick layers shale and excellent drainage create conditions similar to those in some of Europe's most productive wine regions.

Hill-country wineries benefit in particular from greatly relieved terrain where good air circulation is generally plentiful. The moderating temperatures of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers in western West Virginia have also helped create some of the best growing regions in the eastern U.S. In fact, West Virginia was the second most productive wine growing state through the late 1800s when a blight anihilated the industry.

Though often considered a southern state, the West Virginia uplands are generally too cool to produce southern varieties of grape (though cold-climate varieties and hybrid French grapes perform extremely well). The most successful plantings are Rieslings. Many producers and distributors also specialize in fruit and dessert wines derived from native mountain fruits, shoots, and berries.

As wineries continue to develop in West Virginia, the connoisseur might expect to see more of its history play out in winery tours .

There are all sorts of incredible places to visit in West Virginia, including a whole handful of locally owned and high-quality wineries. We’d recommend heading to the Forks of Cheat Winery in Morgantown, or perhaps head to the West Whitehill Winery in Moorefield. Grapes do well on the mountain hillsides. If planted high enough, there is little risk of spring frosts. Native American grapes including Niagara, Fredonia, Delaware and Concord do well in West Virginia vineyards. French hybrids including Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Aurore and Marechal Foch also have a foothold in many vineyards. Research is being conducted on cold weather varieties such as Frontenac and St. Croix. Many of the wineries also produce wine from fruits such as apple, peach, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries.

The wine industry began prior to the Civil War. The first winery was established in the 1850’s in Dunbar near Charleston. The Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars constructed three cellars of stone to cool and age the wine. Wine would be carted to Charleston where it would then be shipped to Cincinnati. Production continued until 1861 when labor became too expensive due to the Civil War. Today the cellars are listed on the National Register of Historic Places although wine has not been made there for over a century.

On the hillside above the cellars, it is believed that Catawba grapes were planted, but replaced with Concord and Niagara.
