Pykara Lake / Boat Club Ooty Timings

Note : Pykara Lake boating timings are from 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM on all days of the week

Rising from the Mukurthi peak, north of Ooty, the Pykara River gives birth to a series of fine waterfalls and the large Pykara Lake. While the drive towards the lake is an idyllic experience in itself, the boating inside is no less joyful.

Situated amidst a lush green shola forest, Pykara Lake is formed as a result of the dam and power plant constructed on the river. A few hundred meters north of the lake, the river tumbles down the rocks to form the famed Pykara Falls . The Boat Club (or Boat House, as popularly called) in the vicinity, adds to the charm of this little panoramic tourist complex among the hills.

This Pykara Lake Boat House, apart from housing a small cafeteria, has several motorboats ranging from 8-seaters to 15-seaters. If you’re looking for a thrilling ride instead, you can take the small speedboats.

The greens around, thick forests at the shores and the pines in the backdrop, all create an atmosphere to make you hop on the decks. At Pykara Lake and Falls Ooty, you have everything you need to enjoy a day out with your friends/family or enjoy a solitary nature walk. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer or a newly married couple, you shouldn’t miss this attraction near Ooty.

Sit back, relax and read what all you can do at Pykara Lake, apart from gorging on the scenic natural beauty.

Things to do at Pykara Lake

Here’s a list of activities you can undertake at Pykara Lake Ooty.

1. Boat riding at Pykara Lake – Maintained by the state government entity – Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, Pykara Lake Boat House has various motorboats and speedboats available for hire. The large motorboats give you a ride on the lake for 20-30 minutes. Get on board, and admire the beauty of the surroundings while the captain is manoeuvring it around. The small speedboats, on the other hand, are for a 10-minute adventure on the water.

2. Hiking to Pykara Falls – About 1.5-2 km from the lake is the rumbling Pykara Falls. The water, instead of falling from a height, cascades down the rocks. There are two high waterfalls there, one of 55 metres (180 ft) height and other of 61 metres (200 ft). Put on your sports shoes and walk up the steps to have a look. Chirping birds and cool breeze will accompany while you tread up the trail from Pykara Lake to Pykara Falls.

A paid battery car service to the falls is also available if you feel the need.

3. Enjoying at the Boat Club – Those who aren’t up for hiking or ready to go into the waters can enjoy their time at the small cafeteria. Walk around, take photographs and sip coffee while watching over the boats. You can buy quick snacks, tea and coffee there.

These are the activities available for you at the Pykara Lake; a place nestled away from the city. The sounds and surroundings are bound to take any stress off for the time being.

Best Time to Visit Pykara Lake

Although water is present year-round, Pykara Lake water level is low during the summer months. Also, the scorching sun makes it a troublesome affair to visit the place during those times. The best time to visit Pykara Lake, therefore, is from October to March. The weather remains pleasant, and even the Pykara Falls are in full force.

Get in there early to avoid rush or waiting time. Boating or hiking in the evening hours will be more comfortable though.

Time to Explore Pykara Lake

Two hours out of your schedule is all you need to explore the lake on a not so busy day. However, during the peak tourist season or on weekends, you will face long waiting times. So, 3-4 hours is a safe assumption to get done with boating and hiking at Pykara Lake. It will also leave you with plenty of time to spend, feasting at the natural beauty.

A tax on tourism? To visit these destinations, it’ll cost you extra.

New zealand announced it is nearly tripling its tourist tax, joining places from venice to bali, indonesia, that are trying to offset overtourism..

tourist places in pykara

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Tourist taxes are increasingly being deployed by authorities around the world as a way to tackle “overtourism.”

New Zealand this week announced it is nearly trebling its visitor fee, introduced in 2019 to help protect the country’s natural beauty. Iceland reinstated its tourist tax this year after a brief pandemic suspension — raising the levy and expanding it to cruise ship operators — to fund conservation efforts.

In the spring, Venice began charging admission fees for day-trippers , while Amsterdam has increased taxes on overnight stays. Both cities are concerned that tourists are crowding out residents and putting a strain on creaky infrastructure.

Tourist taxes aren’t an entirely new idea. France first introduced a tourist tax on resorts in 1910. In the United States, most places have a hotel tax, as do many cities in Europe . More than 60 destinations worldwide have some kind of tax on visitors, tourism researchers say .

Bhutan, a small, Himalayan nation wedged between China and India, charges one of the highest fees globally — about $100 a day — to help preserve its pristine peaks from the hordes that visit nearby Nepal .

These are some of the destinations that are imposing new tourist taxes or planning to in 2024.

Iceland’s natural beauty — bubbling hot springs, pristine ice caps and glaciers, and lava-spewing volcanoes — have made it a tourist hot spot. Millions visit the island nation annually, outnumbering the local population of about 400,000. This year, Iceland reinstated a tourist tax suspended during the coronavirus pandemic. The rate for hotel stays doubled to 600 Icelandic krona ($4.32) per night. For cruise ships stopping at Icelandic ports, for the first time, a charge of 1,000 krona applied.

Bali, Indonesia

A sharp decline in visitors during the pandemic led residents on the Indonesian resort island of Bali to reconsider their relationship with foreign tourists and their environmental impact. In February, authorities imposed a tourist tax of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah ($9.70) to be used to preserve cultural sites and beaches, and to fund a crackdown on bad behavior by tourists.

Venice has a love-hate relationship with tourists , who contribute about $3 billion annually to the economy but crowd its narrow laneways and famed piazzas and leave behind a trail of trash. In April, it started charging day-trippers a fee of 5 euros a day (about $5.53). Overnight visitors already pay a tourist tax between 1 and 5 euros. Italian officials are considering raising the nationwide tax to as much as 25 euros , a prospect that has alarmed tourism advocates.

New Zealand

Seeking to protect the country’s natural beauty from an influx of tourists descending each year on small towns, once-lonely beaches and snow-capped peaks, New Zealand imposed a tourist tax in 2019. The government recently announced that the levy would nearly triple to 100 New Zealand dollars ($61.82) from Oct. 1. (Australians and many Pacific Island residents are exempt.)

Amsterdam has been trying to counter overtourism in a number of ways, including banning the construction of new hotels , capping the number of overnight stays and launching a “ Stay Away ” campaign to deter “nuisance tourists,” attracted by the city’s relaxed drug policies and liberated party scene. In 2024, it raised the tourist tax on hotel rooms to 12.5 percent , up from 7 percent. Day-trippers on sea and river cruises pay 14 euros ($15.52).

Thousands of locals took to the streets in this Spanish city over the summer to protest overtourism . Some were armed with brightly colored water pistols that they sprayed at bewildered diners on the city’s patioed streets. In October, the city will raise the tax on tourist lodging to 4 euros ($4.43) per night. Visitors also pay a regional tourist tax, which varies depending on the star rating of the accommodation.

Britain last year introduced an electronic travel authorization (similar to the United States’ ESTA) for visitors from some countries. By the end of 2024, people who do not require a visa — including U.S. and E.U. citizens — will need to apply for an electronic travel authorization before they can visit. Although touted as a measure to improve border security, rather than a tourist tax, it will apply to tourists and cost 10 pounds ($13.12). (The European Union next year will implement a travel authorization for short stays by visitors from 60 countries.) The English county of Kent and officials in Scotland and Wales are contemplating taxes on overnight stays.

A kitchen sink beneath a window with a scenic view of tree-covered hills and a lake.

Mold is in your kitchen—and in places that might surprise you. Here’s how to keep it under control.

From dishwashers to fridge gaskets, mold can hide in plain sight. Discover practical tips to keep your kitchen clean and mold-free.

Mold is pretty much everywhere. A hugely diverse category of fungi, molds reproduce by releasing clouds of microscopic spores—seed-like particles that can land and thrive almost anywhere with water, food, and oxygen.

Kitchens, unsurprisingly, are a reliable source for all of those needs. If you’ve ever noticed a bit of black lining the rim of your blender or the back corner of your fridge, you’re not alone. Thanks to damp conditions and a steady influx of food, kitchen mold is an inevitable part of life.

While these small amounts are not likely to have health impacts, some mold can induce allergic reactions or, in extreme cases, produce acute toxic effects. But proper kitchen hygiene will stave off the worst mold mishaps. Experts offer tips for finding, removing, and avoiding the fungus altogether.

Where does mold lurk in our kitchens?

Like other microbes, molds aren’t too picky about where they grow.

“Theoretically, there are really no surfaces that microbes [like mold] won’t grow on,” says Jordan Peccia , a professor and chair of the chemical and environmental engineering department at Yale University. He says, from plastic to wood to steel, “if there’s some water there, they’ll find a way.”

Still, certain spots are particularly ripe for fungal growth. Peccia points to parts of the kitchen that are regularly wet but not always used or cleaned—like coffee machines. “If you have a coffee maker and you run it but you don’t clean it out every day…mold will grow right on top of that,” he says. “Same thing about a blender seal…anything that’s just constantly wet.”

Refrigerators provide particularly fertile ground for mold, according to Don Schaffner , chair of the food science department at Rutgers University. “The fridge gasket is a good one because it can accumulate moisture,” he says. Other hotspots include the fresh produce drawer or that back corner where condiments might’ve leaked out. A 2014 study found significant growth of mold and other microorganisms in refrigerators, particularly on the bottom shelf.

Food is the biggest source of mold in the kitchen. While products like fresh fruit, soft cheese, and loaves of bread are ideal ground for mold growth, even microscopic amounts of food—think coffee spills, residue from leaky jam jars—can sustain colonies.

( What do you do when you see mold on your food ?)

“Any place in your kitchen that can get food stuck in it and then can either acquire moisture from the air or from the food—any of those kinds of places could accumulate mold,” Schaffner says.

Other kitchen appliances also support mold growth. “There are a lot of fungi that live in our dishwashers,” says Joan Bennett , a plant biology and pathology professor at Rutgers University. Research has shown that a whole host of mold (and other fungal ) species can colonize dishwashers despite the extremely high temperatures and moisture.

Your gut health can affect the rest of your body. Here’s why.

tourist places in pykara

The holidays can take a toll on your gut health. Here’s how to deal.

It’s not just the solid surfaces that are prone to mold growth—dish towels and floor mats are also prone to mold. Part of the danger is that mold in floor mats might be hard to spot, unlike on a white wall or plastic shelf. Similarly, dish towels, if used frequently and left sitting out damp, will happily grow colonies of mold, yeast, and bacteria.

Though Schaffner has never seen visible mold on sponges—which, like cutting boards and sink handles, are highly trafficked and ripe for bacteria —that doesn’t mean mold can’t also grow there. “Sponges hold water; sponges can hold food debris,” he says. “We know, based on published research, that probably one of the dirtiest places in the kitchen is the kitchen sponge.”

How to avoid—and treat—kitchen mold

Most mold growth is avoidable simply by keeping a clean, dry kitchen.

“The key thing is to keep the humidity low,” Peccia says, adding that, as a rule, “mold will not grow on a dry surface.” Watch out for condensation, wipe up spills and leaks, and clear surfaces of dust and debris. He recommends dehumidifiers and air conditioning for homes in particularly damp environments.

While there’s no hard and fast recommendation for how often to clean the fridge and other kitchen surfaces, Schaffner suggests somewhere between weekly and biweekly is generally appropriate.

As for towels and sponges, the most important thing is to reduce moisture accumulation and change them frequently. “Let your sponges dry out,” Schaffner says. “If they’re sitting in the bottom of the sink in a little bit of water, I’ll rinse them, squeeze them out, [then] I’ll set them in the dish drain in a place where they can dry.” Want to do a quick sponge sanitization? Schaffner advises throwing them in the dishwasher or microwaving them in a bowl of water.

Still, leaks and spills can go unnoticed, and the occasional mold colony is inevitable. So, what happens when you notice a suspicious-looking patch?

As a general rule, food safety experts recommend tossing moist foods—such as brie, yogurt, hummus, and berries—when mold appears. Denser, drier foods like hard cheese or carrots, can be safely salvaged after cutting off the mold, plus an extra inch or so.

( Behold the surreal magic and mystery of slime molds .)

When it comes to moldy surfaces like countertops and refrigerator shelves, Schaffner says to wash them with soap and water before disinfecting them with bleach. “Bleach is a tremendously effective sanitizer,” he says, emphasizing that you must first wash away the macro and microparticles. “You can’t sanitize a dirty surface.”

But removing the mold is only half the battle. Where there’s mold, there’s moisture; where there’s moisture, there’s bound to be more mold. As Peccia says: “You’re fixing the symptom but not taking care of the real problem.” He recommends identifying the source of the mold—a water leak, rotting food, a broken fridge seal—and trying to fix it.

Mold isn’t usually a problem unless it persists, Schaffner says. Though some molds release toxic compounds called mycotoxins , others are completely harmless. And small amounts of mold generally aren’t cause for alarm.

“Molds are part of the normal aerosol,” says Bennett. “Our air is full of microbes, and our surfaces are full of microbes.” Sometimes, with all the emphasis on eradicating microbes, she adds, “we forget that an awful lot of microbial life is normal and good.”
