As a life long resident of Duluth, I thought I had tried everything Duluth had to offer. That is, until I experienced the serene beauty of Duluth's shoreline from my "Time Out" sailing adventure. It was fabulous! And I was like a little kid again when Captain Jake let me take the wheel while we sailed under the famous Duluth Ariel Lift Bridge with hundreds of "fans" waving at us as we passed through the boat canal. I was in 7th heaven!
Gracious hosts with immense knowledge of Lake Superior. Their years of experience is obvious as they always seem to know the best place to go depending on the conditions. Each day was a new adventure with beautiful islands and deserted beaches to choose from for our next destination. Jake and Kelly sail the boat with skill and ease, never missing a chance to share the history of places you cruise by. They happily handed over the wheel and ropes to allow us the full experience of sailing. Our trip withTime Out will never be forgotten and we hope to return for another trip soon.
Sailing with Time Out is a wonderful experience. We sailed the Apostle Islands with them and had an unforgettable time. They are very knowledgeable, down to earth and were so accommodating, ensuring that we were able to see and explore all the wonderful things Lake Superior has to offer.

The Vista Fleet in Duluth
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Duluth? Lake Superior, right? If not the lake itself, probably something on the lake, near it or a place with a killer view of it. Enter the Vista Fleet in Duluth. What is that? The Fleet consists of two boats that run both dinner cruises and sightseeing cruises in and around the Duluth Harbor. If you’ve never actually been out on Lake Superior, you owe yourself the opportunity; you will not be disappointed. Sightseeing Cruises
The Vista Fleet Duluth Sightseeing Cruises depart from the waterfront dock behind the DECC. They run multiple times daily from late spring and until mid-October. The narrated boat tours are 1½ hours long. You will be taken past the grain elevators, see lake freighters gliding by, spend part of the tour on the St. Louis River bay and even go under the Aerial Lift Bridge !
Dinner Cruises
The hillside of Duluth is especially beautiful at night, when Sunset Dinner Cruises are available. The Vista Fleet offers these 2½ hour long cruises during the summer months from Thursday thru Saturday at 7:30pm. They also have limited engagements during the spring and fall seasons, which you can find on the official site of The Vista Fleet in Duluth .
Special Events
Want a more formal experience aboard a Vista Cruise? There are Elegant Champagne Dinner Cruises on selected evenings. Other fun trips include Pizza, Family Fun and Happy Hour cruises. The Fleet offers special holiday outings as well. They are on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. If you have a large group or want to plan an amazing day aboard the Vista Fleet in Duluth, contact them via their website. FYI, there is no parking at the dock. We will be in Duluth May 30th and May 31st and are interested in cruising on Lake Superior. Will there be a dinner cruise on either of those dates? We are staying at Voyageur on the Lake. How far are we from your dock?
We are interested in booking a day cruise on Tuesday July 7 for two adults please contact me to confirm a time
The sunset dinner cruise was great, just angry that a wedding party was on the boat . We paid our money not to be treated like second class. They should of been treated like everyone else.
I want to boat tour around , just I want how it works, which how much the cost detail to make budget, what time did it starts the first tour.
How much is your 1 1/2 hour tour for seniors
I’m not exactly sure of the current cost, but you can reach out to the Vista Fleet here: http://www.vistafleet.com or via phone: (218) 722-6218.
Good luck and enjoy the cruise – definitely a great time! Jed Admin @ GoDuluthMN.com

Freighter taking on water after underwater collision on Lake Superior
The diesel powered freighter ship Edwin H. Gott is seen leaving Duluth, Minn., in 2020. (Alex Kormann, Star Tribune)
A ship carrying iron ore across Lake Superior collided with something underwater Saturday morning, puncturing the vessel and allowing water inside, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Michipicoten, a carrier ship longer than two football fields, began taking on water around 6:53 a.m. about 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale. At least 22 people were on board, the Coast Guard said. Half of that crew have safely evacuated.
Boat crews, a helicopter and members of the U.S. Coast Guard, Border Patrol and National Park Service have responded. The Edwin H. Gott, another lake freighter, also responded. Coast Guard officials said pumps aboard the Michipicoten had removed some water on board.
The ship is carrying taconite, a low-grade iron ore often mined from the Mesabi Iron Range. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, such ships sail to Indiana, Ohio and other steel-making areas around the Great Lakes where the taconite is melted into steel.
None of the taconite on board the Michipicoten was believed to have spilled so far.
Isle Royale is about 20 miles east of Grand Portage, Minn., just south of the Canadian border. It’s not immediately clear whether the ship is in Minnesota or Michigan waters.
The carrier ship is now headed to a nearby port for inspection and repairs. Officials say details about the collision, and what caused it, will be released after “the situation is stabilized.”

Freighter carrying taconite takes on water in Lake Superior; Coast Guard responds
By Aki Nace
Updated on: June 8, 2024 / 12:56 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota
DULUTH, Minn. — A large ship is taking on water after it struck something underwater in Lake Superior.
The U.S. Coast Guard said they received the report shortly before 7 a.m. The 689-foot Michipicoten freighter, which is carrying taconite, struck the object roughly 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale.
The Michipicoten has pumps on board, which crews are using to displace water. The coast guard said that as of Saturday morning, there are no signs of spillage.
Around 8:15 a.m., officials said the Michipicoten had tilted from 15 degrees back to 5 degrees.
Half of the 22-person crew was removed from the ship for safety. A separate freighter, the Edwin H Gott, is alongside the Michipicoten, the coast guard said.
Taconite is a low-grade iron ore, which according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources , is mined from the Mesabi Iron Range near Hibbing and transported from Duluth to different ports around the Great Lakes region.
