SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (April 11, 2023) – Living Vehicle leads the charge in the all-electric luxury travel trailer revolution with its latest model, the 2024HD.  With unmatched off-grid capabilities and more solar power than most residential homes, Living Vehicle debuts its most capable and powerful model yet.

The absence of limitations in an off-grid environment sets the 2024 Living Vehicle luxury travel trailer apart from the rest of the industry. The company has created an autonomous, electric-powered living solution, starting with a foundation of renewable solar energy.  This level of energy storage allows for full-time living in comfort, with multiple redundant backup fuel options available should environmental conditions change.

As the world becomes increasingly uncertain and unpredictable, it's essential to have lifestyle alternatives that meet your basic needs, including shelter, water, and comfort.  Amid rolling blackouts and extreme weather events, Living Vehicle is made for independence from an unreliable electrical grid and increasingly scarce water resources.

Luxury Unplugged

"The HD series offers unmatched off-grid live-ability,” states Living Vehicle Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer Joanna Hofmann. "Imagine being surrounded by snow-capped mountains and having all the amenities of a 5-star hotel, such as a king bed, spa-style rain shower, and a chef-designed kitchen. All made possible without any connections to utilities. Free from RV parks, and no other campers in sight."

Each unit is custom-built and offers multiple bedroom configuration options for 2024,capable of sleeping up to 8 adults. The flagship Queen or King Suites features over 150 square feet of storage space and a 6' full-height closet.  The zero-gravity lounge pairs perfectly with the 4K Home Theater system and integrated Hi-Fi wireless audio.   Professionals and "work-from-anywhere" creatives are empowered by the Mobile Office, with an 80" dual workstation and folding bed system.  The fully customizable Creative Studio integrates a suite of high-end Mac and Apple devices, and the Starlink Flat Satellite dish provides a dedicated WIFI network wherever your adventures take you.

Prepared for Anything

The ability to generate resources and provide independence from the grid is one of the critical features of the 2024 Living Vehicle lineup. The luxury trailer uses an innovative water system to create an endless water supply while traveling off-grid by extracting humidity from the air and storing it in the freshwater tank, allowing infinite time away from the grid.

The Flagship HD PRO model offers 72kWh of energy storage and 18kW of power, which runs all onboard electrical equipment, including electric heating and cooling.  With the air conditioning system relocated to the basement, the 2024 Living Vehicle HD PRO features a wall-to-wall solar capacity of up to 6kW.  The Living Vehicle can operate entirely off-grid, allowing users to enjoy the great outdoors without the restrictions and limitations of urban-based utilities.

The solar-powered trailer has true four-season capability and can thrive in below-freezing temperatures, down to an industry-first sub-zero, -4°F, thanks to the dual-zone 240V Mini-Split electric heating system.  The Living Vehicle is fully insulated with100% rigid closed-cell foam insulation, which keeps the inside cool in environments that reach 120°For higher using the 24K BTU air conditioning system with SEER-21 rating.

Designing Solutions for Off-Grid Conditions

Matthew Hofmann, CEO and architect of Living Vehicle, emphasizes the importance of designing solutions that thrive in real-world off-grid conditions.  As a leading expert in net-zero energy design, Hofmann explains, "Living Vehicle is all-electric by design; however, it would be foolish to venture out into the wild without a backup system when things don't always go according to plan."

Hofmann notes that off-grid living requires redundancy in systems to ensure reliable operation in extreme environments.  This concept includes backup systems fueled by fossil fuels, such as generators and high-power alternators, which provide additional electricity during reduced sunlight due to cloud cover or inclement weather.

The Living Vehicle HD also offers extensive tech and connectivity features, including over-the-cloud connectivity for complete visibility of the current state of the LV energy system and real-time energy flow app-controlled monitoring. With its ability to generate resources and withstand even the harshest environments, the Living Vehicle is the premium choice for those seeking to experience true freedom without limits.

Living Vehicle HD Production

The HD lineup is fully committed for 2023, and production is underway. Living Vehicle is accepting orders for 2024 deliveries, starting at $459,995.

Designed by Santa Barbara–based Matthew and Joanna Hofmann, the 2022 Living Vehicle travel trailer is an eco-conscious adventurer’s dream. "Our company is about getting off-grid and living your best life," Joanna says. "The 2022 model has a completely new energy system. The ability to capture natural energy from the sun and turn it into raw power that’s stored in a large energy pack for use later is what makes Living Vehicle so capable."

Living Vehicle enables nomadic homeowners to live sustainably while working and traveling.

The Hofmanns, who call their own Living Vehicle home, started their company in 2017 after Matthew, a LEED-accredited architect, designed and built an Airstream as his office. "The Airstream eventually became my permanent home on a piece of land in Santa Barbara with a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean," he says. "I grew up in the rugged mountains of Mammoth Lakes, California, and so I have a fierce passion for the outdoors and creating indoor spaces that seamlessly connect people with the outdoor world."

Joanna, who has a background in nutrition, holistic health, and business, is the company’s chief marketing officer—and her contributions to the small-space design process are invaluable. "One thing I bring to the table is how to make the trailers functional and comfortable enough for everyday living," she says. "There’s a big difference between camping for a weekend and making this your full-time home."

"Living Vehicle was designed to connect people with nature—and its 60-square-foot outdoor deck allows owners to get even closer to it," Joanna says. "Owners can use the deck as an outdoor kitchen, a yoga studio, a place to relax without being bothered by ground bugs, or as a stargazing platform."

Joanna considers elements she found difficult while living in previous micro homes, and she works with Matthew to create solutions. "It’s one of the best things about creating a product that serves real-life, everyday needs," she says. "We’ve lived in so many small spaces together, and I know that if something annoys me, it must be an issue for others. After I found out Matthew worked in the trailer world and wanted to pursue the lifestyle with me, I had a long list of non-negotiables before I’d commit."

The flexible kitchen is equipped with a full-size refrigerator.

A sizable kitchen with plenty of storage was on Joanna’s list of must-haves for the tiny home on wheels—as was a comfortable bathroom. "Making healthy and delicious meals in a small space is possible with the right design," she says. "And above all, I needed a nice bathroom—bathrooms in trailers are notoriously terrible. I wanted a space that felt great when I took my morning shower...a space that connected me to nature."

A removable island provides space for food preparation in the open-plan kitchen.

The new Living Vehicle starts at $250K, and it comes equipped with a kitchen and an ample pantry, extra storage for hobby and exercise gear, a tall closet that accommodates hanging clothes, a spa-like bathroom that connects to the outdoors, and a 60-square-foot outdoor deck. "We found that most small spaces weren’t able to go off-grid for very long, so we wanted to design a full-time off-grid residence with as few limitations as possible," Matthew says.

Sliding glass doors connect the kitchen to the outdoor deck and the landscape beyond.

The four-season residence is designed with an array of flexible spaces—a built-in sectional in the living/dining area converts to a bed for overnight guests, and in the bedroom the queen-size bed turns into an 80-inch desk. "When the bed is put away, some of our customers also use this extra floor space as a children’s play area," Joanna says.

The dining area features a removable table, and it can convert into a lounge or living area.

Clad with aluminum, the tiny home is as durable as it is efficient. "Aluminum is one of the most common natural elements, and it’s a fully recyclable resource," Matthew says. "It’s lightweight, low-maintenance, strong, and will last a lifetime."

The Hofmanns were also drawn to the way aluminum takes on a patina. "It’s an honest material that gets better with daily use and the passing of time," Matthew says. "The oxidation process forms a naturally occurring protective layer that prevents corrosion."

The bedroom has a large viewing screen, a projector, and a queen-size bed.

Sustainability was also an important design consideration for the Hofmanns. According to Joanna, the Living Vehicle has more solar power than most homes. Every year, the couple aims improve on the previous year’s model with the ultimate goal of creating an all-electric, net-zero product. "The 2022 model brings us one step close to that vision," Joanna says.

A laundry area and a tall closet that accommodates hanging clothes are located in the bedroom.

Solar energy can be used to power all of the Living Vehicle’s major appliances, heating, and cooling systems. "With the advent of electric tow vehicles, the near-term vision is to store solar energy and then charge the same truck that pulls the trailer, bringing the concept of a fuel-free world one step closer," Joanna explains.

The bedroom’s queen-size bed folds into the wall and converts into a desk so that the room can be used as an office space.

The company currently delivers to Canada and within the United States—and lately, they’re shipping more models than ever. "One of the effects of the pandemic was an increase in housing prices," Matthew says. "As a result of the pandemic, the 2020 California wildfires, and Texas power outages, Living Vehicle has become a solution for homeowners looking to live simply and freely. People are choosing not to depend on big utility provider corporations that are becoming increasingly unreliable."

A skylight in the spa-like bathroom provides the feeling of showering outdoors.

A skylight in the spa-like bathroom provides the feeling of showering outdoors.

The couple has also learned that customers simply want a different way of life. "Our typical client is the nomadic homeowner," Joanna says. "If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that commuting to work to grind away at a desk is not the only way to live and be successful. In the last year, professionals have thrived in remote environments, and they are now finding creative ways to be productive while traveling and exploring."

A luxury travel trailer maker unveiled its latest $250,000 model that can charge EVs — see inside the 2022 Living Vehicle

  • Luxury travel trailer maker Living Vehicle has unveiled its multi-room 2022 model.
  • The company has seen persisting demands for its travel trailers throughout COVID-19.
  • The trailer— which starts at $249,995 — comes in four models with varying energy capabilities.

Living Vehicle — a luxury travel trailer maker — has unveiled its latest 2022 model following the success of its previous trailers.

the living vehicle travel trailer

RV makers have been seeing a boost in sales, but California-based Living Vehicle isn't new to this skyrocketing market success.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Living Vehicle's previous 2021 model sold out a quarter and a half ahead of schedule, Joanna Hofmann, co-founder and CMO of Living Vehicle, told Insider in an email interview.

the living vehicle travel trailer

And the luxury company doesn't expect its latest model to stay on the market for too long either.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Like other RV makers, Living Vehicle saw a boost in demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the company now expects its new model to potentially sell out faster than its predecessor.

And 20% of the upcoming trailer's production slot was already sold during its pre-release, Hofmann said.

"With the spike of covid cases brought on by the Delta variant, demand continues to increase as people are making long-term plans to adapt to a new way of living, traveling, and working," Hofmann said in an email statement.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Besides leisurely road trips, some Living Vehicle customers have used their trailers as a second home or as a way of living off-grid, Matthew Hofmann, the co-founder and CEO of Living Vehicle, told Insider in an email interview.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Compared to its previous iteration, the refreshed off-grid, four-season capable trailer has upgraded power capabilities, including new or updated energy, solar, and energy storage systems.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Now let's take a closer look at the upcoming trailer. The 2022 model looks like a sleek aluminum trailer on the outside …

the living vehicle travel trailer

… but heading inside, the interior is more akin to a hotel than your classic RV.

the living vehicle travel trailer

The RV is fitted with 232 square feet of space, which includes a kitchen, bathroom, lounge, and living room.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Let's start in the kitchen, which has an island, a refrigerator, a three-burner stovetop, and a microwave, to name a few amenities.

the living vehicle travel trailer

The island can also be moved outside or onto the trailer's deck for open-aired meals.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Speaking of, the outdoor deck — which can be deployed automatically — sits right across from the kitchen past a glass sliding door.

the living vehicle travel trailer

But if you'd rather dine indoors, you can have your meals in the lounge adjacent to the kitchen.

the living vehicle travel trailer

This lounge space also doubles as an additional bedroom when it's converted into a queen bed.

the living vehicle travel trailer

There's even a 42-inch television right by the living room for dinner and a movie.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Now let's move on to the bathroom, which has upgraded versions of the classic bathroom amenities, such as a skylight-equipped rainfall shower and a toilet that can come with a bidet.

the living vehicle travel trailer

The bedroom is just past the bathroom, and comes with a memory foam queen bed, a skylight, a dresser, and nightstands.

the living vehicle travel trailer

When the main bedroom is used in conjunction with the lounge, the trailer can sleep up to four people.

the living vehicle travel trailer

In total, there are 228 cubic feet worth of storage space throughout the tiny home on wheels, including the bedroom's dressers, under-bed units, and a closet.

the living vehicle travel trailer

This bedroom space can optionally turn into an in-home movie theater with a 70-inch screen and speakers …

the living vehicle travel trailer

… or into a two-seater office when the pull-down bed is tucked away into the wall.

the living vehicle travel trailer

There's a long list of other possible upgrades besides the option for an office.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Amenities like a washer and dryer, dishwasher, extra sleeping loft, and oven come optional ...

the living vehicle travel trailer

… as well as pet-friendly upgrades, such as a litter box and an outdoor shower that can be used by both animals and people.

the living vehicle travel trailer

In terms of off-grid travel, the new trailer has four models differentiated by their energy capabilities: the Core, Max, Pro, and Pro-EV.

the living vehicle travel trailer

According to Joanna Hofmann, customer feedback shapes the annual models, and "since day one, [the] customers have asked for more ... solar, energy storage, and the ability to thrive in extreme climates for extended periods."

the living vehicle travel trailer

The trailer's solar panels can even charge electric vehicles, a necessity if you plan on towing your tiny home on wheels with an EV.

the living vehicle travel trailer

And if there are daily "adequate sun conditions" out, the trailer could theoretically "sustain power indefinitely," according to a press release.

the living vehicle travel trailer

The cheapest $249,995 Core model is equipped with 1,320 watts of solar, 14.4 kilowatt-hours of energy storage, and a five-kilowatt inverter …

the living vehicle travel trailer

… while the $429,995 Pro-EV has 3,520 watts of solar, 57.6 kilowatt-hours of energy storage, and a 20-kilowatt inverter, among other upgrades.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Despite its bulkier price tag, the more expensive model has been attracting the majority of customers, according to the Hoffman's.

the living vehicle travel trailer

If you're interested in owning one, be prepared to wait: All of the company's builds are custom-made, which means the trailer has a lead time of up to a year.

the living vehicle travel trailer

"With so many remote working opportunities, people are redefining their criteria for where they want to live," Joanna Hofmann said. "Access to outdoor recreation and being closer to nature are at the top of that list for many of our customers."

This company made a Cybertruck-inspired travel trailer that could run off-grid forever

F ew things get the current zeitgeist talking like Elon Musk’s Tesla Cybertruck and anything even tangentially related to it. Now, specialty luxury RV manufacturer Living Vehicle wants to add to the hysteria conversation with news of a revolutionary concept travel trailer that’s unlike anything on the market. The bleeding-edge CyberTrailer is purpose-built to pair with the Tesla Cybertruck and allow campers to untether from the grid forever.

Get the details on Living Vehicle’s Tesla Cybertruck-inspired CyberTrailer

With few official details beyond a dozen high-level bullet points on the company’s website , Living Vehicle is doing its best to get RV enthusiasts talking by imagining what the future CyberTrailer could be. At first glance, the ultra-modern RV’s roots are clear. The asymmetrical silhouette and sharp, angular aesthetic are unmistakably ripped straight from the Cybertruck’s original design sketches. It’s sleek, muscular, and a clear departure from, well, every other travel trailer on the road.

But, beyond the next-gen design, what sets the CyberTrailer apart is its serious off-grid capability. According to Living Vehicle, buyers can “say goodbye to RV parks forever” with “freedom from utility connections.” In practical terms, it’s built to be 100% solar-powered, thanks to roof-mounted panels and a second, horseshoe-shaped array of panels that wrap around the sides and rear. In theory, this could provide enough juice to run all of the trailer’s onboard tech components and appliances indefinitely wherever you can find abundant sunshine. According to LV, the solar setup will be beefy enough to power almost any electric tow vehicle, whether that’s a Cybertruck, a Rivian, or a Ford F150 Lightning . The company confirms the CyberTrailer will play nice with traditional gas and diesel-powered vehicles too.

Even cooler, though, is the promise of “unlimited water from air creation & recycling.” In simplest terms, this should work like a high-capacity dehumidifier, drawing moisture from the ambient air, filtering it, and converting it to clean, potable water that fills the trailer’s freshwater tank. In theory, it could do this indefinitely or for as long as the trailer has the power to run the recycling system.

As for additional amenities and conveniences, we anticipate the CyberTrailer being as luxurious and high-tech as Living Vehicle’s current production model travel trailers , including the HD24 and HD30. Marine-grade construction, residential fixtures, high-end RV (or full-size) appliances, and tech-forward everything are all but guaranteed. Among the few official details, the company confirms complete wireless control via Apple iPad and even a folding patio and gear hauler ramp.

Reserve your own Cybertruck-inspired RV/travel trailer

The latest details for purchasing your own CyberTrailer are thin. Officially, Living Vehicle claims a starting price of $175,000, and deliveries are expected to start in 2025. A fully refundable $100 deposit puts your name on the waitlist. Given the vagueness surrounding this prototype, though, we’re a bit skeptical as to whether or not this is just a Cybertruck-related PR stunt . Either way, it’s guaranteed to get people talking.

The 15 Best Travel Trailers for 2024

Traveling doesn’t mean having to step foot in a frenzied airport. In fact, there’s never been a better time to go camping. With the right travel trailer, you can easily leave the city behind without having to deal with anyone other than your nearest and dearest. Today’s featured-packed luxury caravans are nothing like those you were ferried around in as a kid, either. Not only do they look good, but they’re packed with enough premium features that you’ll feel right at home, no matter where you are.

We’re also at the point where there’s a trailer for practically every kind of camper, regardless of what vehicle they drive (including the most notorious EV out there, the Tesla Cybertruck ). If you’re the kind of person who likes the classics, there are multiple aluminum-sided Airstream and Bowlus models to choose from. Want to bring as much of your home on the road with you? How about Living Vehicle or Land Ark’s mammoth condos on wheels? There are also caravans you can take off-road with your 4×4 and ultra-light and compact models you can tow with even a crossover SUV. Some can even be turned into a mobile office if you want to mix work and play. Below are 16 travel trailers that will allow you to take to the road in just about any way you can imagine.

A rear 3/4 view of the Living Vehicle HD24

If you want a better understanding of how far travel trailers have come over the decades, just look at the Living Vehicle lineup. The Santa Barbara-based company’s boxy trailers are basically mini apartments you can take with you on the road. Our favorite might be the new HD24, which is far from the company’s biggest offering, but comes with all the amenities you could need at the campground—and then some.

The all-electric model, which starts at $299,995, may measure only 24 feet, but its minimalist interior still has more than enough for a bedroom, kitchen, entertainment area, and a bathroom with a dedicated shower. One particularly clutch feature is a five-by-eight-foot multi-purpose space that can be used as an office, guest room, or laundry room. If that wasn’t enough, the top-of-the-line Pro variant has a solar-assisted power system that can keep the trailer running for up to a month off the grid.

The Living Vehicle HD24 entertainment area

Special Features:   —Trailer can be configured to include a laundry room, office, or guest room. —Interior has a clean minimalist look and comes packed with premium amenities. —Range-topping Pro version’s power system produces enough energy for 30 days of off-the-grid living,

The Bowlus Endless Highways Performance Edition from the side

It may not be the most famous shiny caravan maker—that would be Airstream—but Bowlus is the company that gave us the first riveted travel trailer. The company, which was revived in 2014, knows not to mess with a good thing, so its well-regarded trailers—like our favorite, the  Endless Highways Performance Edition —look just like those it produced in the 1930s, only bigger and with better materials (think: alclad aluminum for the exterior and birchwood for the interior).

Despite its classic look, the $225,000 trailer has all the conveniences you expect in 2022, including heat and air-conditioning systems, a WiFi modem and plenty of outlets for charging all your smart devices. Best of all, though, might be a lithium iron phosphate that gives you the ability to live off the grid for two peaceful weeks. If you’re an animal lover, there’s also the  Terra Firma , which features a bunch of Fido-friendly features like a built-in food bowl, pet bed and remote temperature control system.

Inside the Bowlus Volterra

Special Features:  —Thee’s a double-sided indoor galley and an outdoor cooking area with electric and propane outlets. —The hotel-style shower has teak flooring and seating. —Lithium iron phosphate power system can keep the entire trailer running for up to two weeks.

A front 3/4 view of the Mammoth Overland Extinction Level Event

Mammoth Overland’s latest model is a burly off-road trailer designed to withstand anything it encounters in nature. The appropriately named Extinction Level Event (ELE) rides on a set of chunky all-terrain tires and has an angular aluminum body reinforced with steel armor and skid plates. If that doesn’t sound like enough, you can upgrade to Level 3 bullet-proof armor. There’s also a built-in bear spray system too, for added security. The ELE, which starts at $67,000, is pretty compact since it’s a tear-drop trailer, but it can comfortably sleep two and has an integrated workstation inside its cabin. There’s also a swing-out kitchenette in the back for cooking.

The Mammoth Overland Extinction Level Event's swing-out kitchenette

Special Features:   —Comes with a built-in bear spray system and is available with bullet-proof armor. —Despite its compact size, the interior cabin still has room for a built-in workstation. —The swing-out kitchenette isn’t big, but has everything you need to cook a delicious meal.

Airstream Globetrotter

One brand leaps to mind when most of us think about travel trailers—Airstream. Its iconic aluminum-sided caravans have been instrumental in popularizing road trips and  camping  in the US for decades. One need only look at the company’s  Globetrotter  model to see why: In addition to looking beautiful, the silver-covered caravan is packed with creature comforts to keep you traveling comfortably. It’s not the brand’s largest model—that would be the flagship  Classic —but it’s available with one of six different floor plans, each of which has room for a spacious entertainment area (that can sleep up to four adults).

Inside you’ll find a full-featured kitchen, half-bathroom, shower and sizable bedroom with either a queen-sized bed or two twins. As you would expect from Airstream, the amenities are top-rate, too, like Franke faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, stainless steel appliances, Quietstream climate control system and multiple LG LED TVs. The Globetrotter starts at $120,000. If it doesn’t fit the bill, the brand has plenty of other models to choose from, including collaboration editions like the  extra-homey Pottery Barn Edition  or their  ultra-rare Supreme edition .

Airstream Globetrotter

Special Features: —There are different floor plans to choose from, each of which features a full kitchen, half bathroom and dedicated shower. —The Quietstream climate control system barely makes a peep, even when the heater or A/C is running. —A built-in canopy provides shade when you want to spend time outside.

The W2 Romotow T8

Good things come to those who wait. More than a decade after it was first announced, the Romotow T8 is finally available to order. The 30.5-foot caravan, which was designed by New Zealand-based architecture and design firm W2, has two main components—a fixed chassis and a smaller living space that fits just inside of it. When the $268,500 trailer is parked, the cabin slides out at the touch of a button and can be rotated 90 degrees like a swiveling USB stick. When rotated like this, the hydraulic-powered chassis can then be used as a patio. While this unique design may be the vehicle’s main selling point, its interior cabin comes with all the features you need and has enough room for six adults.

Inside the W2 Romotow T8

Special Features:   —Unique rotating design is unlike anything else currently on the trailer market. —The living area is large enough to sleep up to six adults. — Hydraulic patio comes with an integrated deck set.

Escapod Topo2

The  Escapod Topo2  is a trailer for anyone looking to take their camping trip off road with minimal fuss. The brand’s update of the classic teardrop trailer is an off-road-friendly model without any of the bulk. Unlike most of the trailers on this list, Escapod’s bedroom and kitchen area are separated from one another. The dedicated sleeping area has room for a queen-size mattress and is equipped with a stargazer window so you can really take in the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. The galley, meanwhile, is only accessible from outside the $39,500 trailer, but has ample counter space for meal prep and cooking. Both sections get their power from a VPR 4EVER lithium ion battery with some solar panels to help keep things running smoothly and efficiently.

Special Features: —Exterior is made from a single-piece of composite fiberglass that is rugged and weather-resistant. —Laser-cut tube steel frame should last for years. —Bedroom’s stargazer window offers up a beautiful view of your surroundings.

The Retreat Caravan and OzXcorp's ERV Electric Camper

It was only a matter of time until the  electric revolution  made its way to the world of trailers and campers.  Retreat Caravan and OzXcorp’s ERV  is a rugged trailer that also happens to run entirely on battery power. Roof-mounted solar panels provide juice for a 14.3-kWh lithium battery that keeps the trailer’s many appliances running. And while the trailer is perfectly equipped for some off-road fun, thanks to a specially tuned suspension and all-terrain tires, it also packs all of the comforts of a luxe hotel room inside, including a bathroom, spacious seating area and master bedroom suite with a king-sized bed and closets. But the true highlight may be the $75,000 caravan’s full-size kitchen, which features an induction cooktop, fridge and washing machine. There’s also a Weber electric barbecue and slow cooker for making your meals outdoors.

The interior of the ERV electric cabin

Special Features: —Solar panels and 14.3-kWh battery power the trailer and let you go off grid. —A specially tuned suspension and large all-terrain tires let you go off-road. —The primary bedroom has enough room for a king-size bed and its own closets.

Eriba Touring 820

Are you looking for an aluminum-sided trailer that looks like more than just another Airstream or Bowlus’s rip-off? If so, the  Eriba Touring 820  might fit the bill. The company’s top-of-the-line caravan updates the classic silver bullet look with a retro-futuristic shape and details. Even more impressive, though, is the 27-foot-trailer’s interior. The company has packed it full of luxury amenities like a sizable, leather-covered lounge area (that can be converted into a bed), customizable mood lighting and a surprisingly fashionable bathroom. The true highlight, though, is a bedroom with a large panoramic window that offers up a gorgeous views of your surroundings. That’s good, too, since you might not actually want to leave the $88,500 trailer.

Eriba Touring 820

Special Features: —The kitchen has a mini wine cellar for keeping your best bottles at the ready. —The leather-upholstered entertainment area can be converted into an additional sleeping area at night. —Adjustable mood lighting will help you feel at home no matter where you are.

The Land Ark Drake

Almost more of a portable house than a trailer, the  Land Ark Drake  basically lets you take all the comforts of home on the road. The gigantic, yet stylish, two-level, 357-square-feet trailer can comfortably sleep seven adults. Stark and modern on the outside, the trailer features an equally clean white-washed pine and black metal decorated interior. Across its two floors, it has room for a full-sized kitchen, living room and bathroom (which includes a bathtub), along with two loft bedrooms and an office which can also be converted to a sleeping area. Its $139,000 starting price may sound a lot for a trailer, but for a two-story house on wheels it’s not that bad.

Inside the The Land Ark Drake

Special Features: —The two-level design means you have 357-square-feet of space. —Downstairs bathroom includes a tub for when you need to take a relaxing soak. —It has a primary bedroom and two loft-style sleeping areas.

A front 3/4 view of the Pebble Flow

There are plenty of EV-friendly travel trailers on the market at this point, but none are nicer to an electric powertrain than the Pebble Flow, which starts at $109,000. The futuristic vehicle is available with an optional propulsion that includes two electric motors—one situated on each wheel—to help make sure its 6,200-pound weight isn’t eating up all your battery-powered vehicle’s range. That’s far from the Flow’s only forward-thinking feature though. The trailer also comes with an “Instacamp” system that can be used to park the vehicle and set up camp (which includes leveling out the vehicle, deploying its staircase, and turning on the lights). The unique feature can also be triggered remotely via Pebble’s smartphone app.

Special Features:   —An optional propulsion system means it can even be towed by EVs. —Unique “Instacamp” system allows you to park the vehicle remotely via the company’s smartphone app. — Solar-assisted battery pack produces enough power for a week of off-the-grid living.

A rear 3/4 view of the Living Vehicle CyberTrailer being towed by a Tesla Cybertruck

Elon Musk has been promising camping accessories for the Tesla Cybertruck since the get-go, but any official camper shell or trailer is likely years away at this point. Fortunately, Living Vehicle, the maker of our current favorite caravan, has stepped in to fill the void. The company has just unveiled the CyberTrailer, a new model with a design inspired by the battery-powered pickup. The caravan is almost certainly the most striking entry on this list, for better or for worse, but it also has a solar-assisted power system that produces more than enough juice to keep the entire vehicle running off the grid. More importantly, for Cybertruck (and other EV) owners, it also allows the trailer to be used as a mobile charging station for any battery-powered vehicle or plug-in hybrid.

The Living Vehicle CyberTrailer from the front

Special Features: —A bold design inspired by Tesla’s pickup that also offers excellent aerodynamic performance. —A solar-assisted system that will keep the trailer and all its features running off-the-grid. —Can be towed by pickups and SUVs other than the Cybertruck, including other EVs.

Colorado Teardrops Boulder travel trailer

There are EV-friendly trailers and then there’s  Colorado Teardrops’s Boulder . Not only is the company’s latest designed to be towed by a battery-powered SUV or truck, it can also charge your EV’s battery. That ability comes courtesy a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a built-in DC fast charger that will give you some much needed peace of mind out on the open road. At the very least, it gives you the freedom to come up with a route centered around sights instead of charging stations. Aside from this very vital feature, the compact caravan has everything two adults and two children need to live off the grid for a for a few days, including a comfortable queen-sized mattress, two bunk beds (for the kids), an enclosed kitchenette and an optional climate control system. The $55,000 trailer also comes in a variety of two-tone color schemes that all look pretty sharp.

Special Features: —Doesn’t just ease the burden on your EV’s battery; it can charge it, too. —A unique bunk-bed design creates room for four people to sleep (two adults and two children). —The enclosed kitchenette has plenty of counter space.

Hunter Nature Raptor XC

A big trailer can be a godsend on the campground, especially if you’re traveling with family or friends. The problem, of course, is getting the hulking vehicle there. No matter how experienced the driver, maneuvering a large caravan can be very tricky. Luckily there are trailers like  Hunter Nature’s Raptor XC . The brand’s angular model looks compact but features a pull-out section that just about doubles the size of its interior. When it’s fully extended you’ll have more than enough room for a dedicated living area, kitchen and bedroom. This will come in handy if there’s more than two in your traveling party, too. That’s because the $44,000 trailer’s entertainment area can easily be converted into an additional sleeping area at night.

The Hunter Nature Raptor XC's main living area and slide-out bedroom

Special Features: —An expanding segment turns this trailer into a multi-room cabin. —The bedroom has a large skylight so you can see the stars at night. —A spacious lounge can be converted into an additional sleeping area if you need more room.

Best for Design Obsessives: X-Cabin300

The X-Cabin300 travel trailer

Silver trailers don’t all need to be bullet-shaped as nice as the classic Airstream may look. Just take a gander at the X-Cabin300. The all-aluminum vehicle has a boxy shape that looks both classic and modern. The Japanese-made caravan is compact, but comes with four different interior layouts designed to meet your varied needs (it can even be used as a food truck). The $50,000 trailer is smaller than most—it measures just seven feet tall, seven feet wide, and 15 feet long—and only tips the scales at 1,650 pounds, which means a compact SUV can even tow it.

X-Cabin300 travel trailer with a canopy attached

Special Features:   —A refreshing spin on the classic all-aluminum travel trailer. —Available with four different interior layouts. —Small and light enough to be towed by a compact SUV.

The exterior of the Taxa Mantis

It can be hard to find a trailer that fits everyone’s needs, but the  Taxa Mantis  comes close. Its no-nonsense design means it fits with nearly anyone’s style. Thanks to a pop-up roof section, ingenious use of space and plenty of storage compartments, the Mantis has all the room you and your friends and family need to camp in comfort, which can be crucial on longer trips. It’s also got all the necessary features, including a bathroom with a built-in shower, water heater, kitchenette and 8,000 BTU air conditioner. The trailer, which starts at $46,000, is ideal for off-roading, but there’s a  special Overland edition  if you want something even more rugged.

Inside the Taxa Outdoor Mantis 5.1 Overland

Special Features: —A pop-up roof means you don’t have to sleep in the kitchen if you don’t want to. —There’s a built-in water heater and climate control system with a 8,000 BTU air conditioner. —It comes with a built-in canopy for outdoor hangouts.

The exterior of the Happier Camper HC1

Imagine if you didn’t need a truck or SUV to tow your trailer. You don’t if the caravan in question is Happier Camper’s compact  HC1 . The Los Angeles-based outfit’s smallest model is as light as they come, with a dry weight of just 1,100 pounds, meaning it can be towed by practically any car, even a modern-day Mini Cooper. It features a semi-modular interior designed by Adaptiv that can be customized to fit your camping style—components snap in like Legos—with either a full kitchen or enough sleeping room for up to five people. You can even add solar panels if you want to go off the grid. The $34,450 trailer’s old-school design is also sure to stand out on practically any campground. Even better, no pickups needed.

Inside the Happier Camper HC1

Special Features: —At only 1,100 pounds, it can be towed by just about any car. —The semi-modular floor plan allows you to arrange the interior to accommodate your camping style. —The larger rear hatch opens up space when you are entertaining.

What matches a Cybertruck for camping? So far, it's the Living Vehicle CyberTrailer.

Perhaps no vehicle in recent history has been as polarizing as the Tesla Cybertruck, Elon Musk’s long-simmering take on how and what an electric pickup truck can or should be. Styling aside, it’s clear the Cybertruck does have power in the right places, both for acceleration and for towing. Now it just needs a matching trailer. Off-grid trailer specialist Living Vehicle has a cyber solution.

Called the CyberTrailer, the hitch-towed trailer isn’t just a stylistic compliment to the Cybertruck, it’s as highly functional and forward-thinking as the stainless steel vehicle pulling it. And at $175,000 to start, it’s an investment, just as the top-tier Cybertruck can be. Even if you don’t own a Cybertruck (yet), the CyberTrailer will also happily roll behind Ford 150 Lightning, Rivian R1T and most half-ton liquid-fueled pickups with an appropriate tow rating.

CyberTrailer Tech

The shape and lighting effects of the CyberTrailer will mimic that of the Cybertruck.

Crafting the Cyber Trailer likely wasn’t a huge stretch for Living Vehicle, who specialize in creating self-sufficient yet bespoke trailers (below) that feature built-in batteries, large solar arrays, fold-out decks and plenty of technology.

Living Vehicle offers two other options, the HD and GT. They are designed for extended comfortable ... [+] off-grid getaways.

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

Donald trump $300 million poorer after guilty verdict as truth social stock sinks, aurora alert should you prepare to see the northern lights this week.

For the CyberTrailer, Living Vehicle added an appropriate twist on the realtionship between the trailer and the Cybertruck towing it: Once on site, the trailer can charge the Cybertruck from its battery bank, large solar array or a “backup power generation” system that was not detailed since the trailer is still in the development stage. “The CyberTrailer is not just a luxury camper; it is a mobile charging station,” the company said in a press release. The systems will allow owners “to venture further extending power and travel without charging stations, “ according to the company.

Another key tech features is a proprietary system that pulls moisture from the air to collect fresh water, eliminating the need to be close to a water source. Living Vehicle says that along with “advanced water and waste recycling processes,” occupants can live off the grid for weeks at a time with power and water.

Rendered images of the CyberTrailer also show it ringed with LED lighting not unlike the front horizon lighting on the Cybertruck. Large side-mounted awnings with built-in lighting can be deployed once on site.

The rear of the CyberTrailer opens to reveal a large covered deck, a Living Vehicle hallmark.

A large deck folds out of the back of the CyberTrailer while the rear hatch forms a cover over the deck. With the side awnings deployed, long continuous windows run nearly the length of the trialer. Living Vehicle did not release specific any images of the CyberTrailer’s interior. Check back for an update in the near future.

In a press release, Living Vehicle said that 80% of the production schedule is currently spoken for. Those interested can hold a spot in line with a $100 deposit, and the company said they plan on producing the CyberTrailer in 2025.

Solar Panel Buying Guide for RVs and Travel Trailers: What You Need to Know

Whether you're living that mobile, off-grid lifestyle or just want power for the occasional camping trip, solar panels on your RV can keep you powered up and comfortable.

Interested in outfitting your camper with solar panels? Start here.

In recent years, more people seem to be living and working from the road than ever before, whether it's in a large RV, travel trailer or camper van. To maximize the freedom of such a lifestyle, having a reliable source of electricity is imperative, and few sources are better than the massive ball of fire that rises in the east each morning.

Adding a solar energy system to your home office on wheels has become markedly easier and cheaper, but there are still plenty of choices, questions and considerations that aren't always so straightforward. We've put together this quick guide with the help of a pair of seasoned pros to determine if solar is right for your ride.

What are RV solar panels?

RV solar panels work just like residential and commercial solar panels except on a smaller, more transportable scale. Once they're installed on your RV, motor home or camper, solar panels collect sunlight and convert it into usable electricity for your vehicle. In turn, you can use this electricity to power the appliances, lights and sockets in your RV.

Can solar panels save you money?

Interested in understanding the impact solar can have on your home? Enter some basic information below, and we’ll instantly provide a free estimate of your energy savings.

There are a number of reasons to add solar panels to an RV, travel trailer or camper. The most obvious is that traveling around often means spending the night in places where there's no easy access to the electrical grid. The most adventurous among us today manage to live and work full time from the road, making solar all but a requirement.

"We knew we wanted to go solar to save money, be off grid and live the lifestyle we wanted and live more sustainably," Shari Galiardi told CNET via Zoom from an off-grid campground in British Columbia.

Galiardi and her partner, Dave Hutchison, have lived and worked full-time from a restored 1957 camper trailer since 2012 with the help of a 300-watt solar system. They told me that while the lifestyle is certainly different from that of the average person, they don't feel as though they're sacrificing very much.

The couple rarely camp places that have power hook-ups, preferring to be off-grid. Hutchison estimated that once in a year they'll plug into an electric outlet at a campsite.

"Usually, that's because it's all that's available," he said.

Can RVs use residential solar panels?

It is possible to mount regular rectangular rooftop solar panels on an RV, trailer or van. This author has done so twice. However, it isn't the most aerodynamic arrangement.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Considering Solar Panels?

Galiardi and Hutchison use flexible, lightweight panels that can contour to a vehicle's roof and also add less weight to the top of a trailer. There are a number of products that can work with RVs, including portable panels that can be set up on the ground at your destination.

How many RV solar panels do you need?

Unlike residential and commercial solar systems, which are designed to power an entire home or business, RV solar systems typically deliver a more modest output. This usually isn't an issue, since you don't use as many lights and appliances in your RV as you would in a brick-and-mortar property.

So how many solar panels will you need for an RV? It depends on a few factors, including your energy consumption habits, the efficiency of the panels and the amount of sunshine your home receives each day.

Solar panels on the roof of a camper van.

The energy demand of a camper van like this is likely to be met with fewer solar panels than a typical home.

Determining the ideal size and wattage of a mobile solar system works the same way it does in a stationary residential setting. Calculate how much power you'll need during peak usage scenarios and plan your panels accordingly.

If anything, it should be easier to figure out your requirements, since you'll likely have fewer appliances to consider in an RV. However, an important consideration is the unpredictability of the sunlight your RV will receive while traveling. Unlike a house, your RV's location and orientation will always be changing, so you may want to design your system with this in mind.

Installing an RV solar panel system

Initially, Galiardi and Hutchison had a friend with experience in the solar industry help them build a small, rudimentary solar system. After a few years, they upgraded their system and even earned a sponsorship deal with a solar panel company.

There are three main  kinds of solar panels for RVs: monocrystalline, polycrystalline and amorphous.

  • Monocrystalline panels are the most efficient of the three, so they'll generate the most energy in the least amount of time.
  • Polycrystalline panels are slightly less efficient, but they're a durable and reliable option.
  • Amorphous panels  aren't as efficient as their counterparts, but the thin and bendable construction makes them easy to install and a lighter-weight option.

In addition to solar panels, you'll need several other components to complete your RV solar system, including the following:

  • Solar inverter , which converts the solar energy from DC to AC power.
  • Charge controller , which protects the storage system from overcharging.
  • Solar battery , which stores the generated energy.

An RV with a portable solar panel parked in front of a bluff.

Portable solar panels present another option for RVers.

Because it can be difficult to keep batteries topped up solely by using solar, a backup source of power is also a good idea. Many travelers use some sort of gas or propane generator. Galiardi and Hutchison are equipped to charge up their lithium batteries using their truck while driving.

"Self heating batteries are fantastic if you're camping in any sort of colder climates," Galiardi says.

This is typically more of a need with lithium batteries, which can be more efficient, lower maintenance and longer-lasting than flooded lead-acid batteries, but are also more sensitive to cold.

Finally, a cord to plug into the grid to recharge when it's available is also a must for most.

RV solar panel maintenance

There's little maintenance to worry about with solar panels. If you're traveling in very dusty or windy conditions, you may need to wipe off or clean your panels to ensure they're working at maximum efficiency.

Traveling may also add a bit more wear to a panel's connectors. Standard solar panel connections are quite weatherproof, but it's worth inspecting your system periodically for signs of deterioration, loose connections or rust.

It's not recommended to service these parts on your own without the guidance of an experienced electrician. Remember that a panel can be generating energy any time the sun is up, even when it's cloudy, so always treat any connections as live circuits.

Here Are 23 Ways to Save On Your Electric Bills Right Now

the living vehicle travel trailer

Cost and rebates

The overall cost of your system will depend on factors including the type of panels you choose and how much electricity you need to generate. If you need lots of power, you'll need to buy more equipment, driving up the price.

Galiardi and Hutchison said their 300-watt system with batteries, inverter and other components cost about $3,000, while larger systems for bigger RVs can easily run more than twice as much.

The good news, according to Galiardi, is that incentives, including the 30% federal tax credit for home solar systems, can apply.

"It includes second homes. And RVs and boats and off-grid cabins are in that second home realm," Galiardi said.

Are RV solar panels right for you?

It's difficult to argue with the benefits of solar energy, but RV solar panels might not be right for everyone. If you live in your RV and often take it off-grid (where there are no campground hookups), then solar can be a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to gas-powered generators.

Portable and flexible solar panels better suited to RVs may be more expensive than standard rooftop residential panels, but they're still remarkably cheap compared with past eras.

There's little reason not to boost your freedom by adding a solar system to your rig if you can afford it, though if you use your RV infrequently, it may not be worth the investment.

Hutchison noted that there might be no need for panels if you only ever park your RV at developed campgrounds with provided power.

However, he added it's worthwhile to consider a system with panels and batteries, even "if you plan to spend even one night off-grid between those sites."

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

the living vehicle travel trailer

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

the living vehicle travel trailer

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

the living vehicle travel trailer

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

the living vehicle travel trailer

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

the living vehicle travel trailer

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

the living vehicle travel trailer

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
